Enjoy Linux Mint 16 and many thanks for helping us test it.
I have a AMD A8-5600K apu. Will this version have the necessary graphics driver installed ? Will compiz worl well ?
I have the 32 bit Cinnamon 2.0 version of LM 16 running on an older Lenovo laptop which always runs Linux Mint without a problem ( Intel Core 2 dual core, 4 GB DDR2 all Intel chipsets and graphics) and it’s running well and stable. I did test with the software rendering mode just out of habit though, and the Cinnamon 2.0 DE is basically unusable (continuous crashes and re-spawns with only partial GUI recovery). As a comparison, a fully updated LM 15/Cinnamon ran okay in software rendering mode on the same laptop albeit a bit slow and resource hungry. It’s two very different versions of Cinnamon, I understand that of course.
I only mention this since, as you well know, there are types of hardware that will, for whatever reason, end up booting into the Cinnamon DE using the software rendering mode.
I also noticed that there’s no “United States” setting available in “Cinnamon Settings/Regional Settings” under the “Format” tab and it can’t be added via the “+” button. I chalk that up to this being an RC release and not the final though.
By the way, booting into a Live session on my desktop (Intel Core 2 Quad, 8 GB DDR2 and a Nvidia GT 430 video card), LM 16/Cinnamon RC runs fine using the latest Nouveau driver. A definite change for the better.
Otherwise, an excellent job–very impressed!
Excellent!! 😀 what is the version of the linux kernel?
Now !! ^__^ I’m going for Installtion
@martin: Why don’t you read rel notes?!
Wow. I’ve just read the improvements, and Petra looks like a major release! Downloading now…
My Bug List
– Nvidia drivers dont automaticaly install nvidia-settings (Tested with nvidia-319 and nvidi-319-updates)
– cinnamon-desktop-editor Choose an icon dialog does not have image previews
– Git is not installed by default (Unkowen if intentional)
– Magnet links for torrents are not working in Firefox
– In some random cases, an application will freeze Xorg (Needs more testing)
– Banshee will segfault after playing ~30 mp3 songs
– On/Off switch for networking applet is visually glitchy
– Having links of files/folders on desktop from another hardrive at startup, then mounting the drive will usually crash then restart Cinnamon
– Cinnamon Settings is advanced mode by default always
Petra 16 Cinnamon is best described as smooth and elegant. I feel it is your best work to date…far surpassing the *10* you earned for the Mint 10 release.
I now have it installed on my desktop pc, and on a laptop in a virtualbox.
Congratulations on a job well done.
Running and testing since yesterday in two computers and no issues. Great in my 3g ram and fast in my older 1g . May not have to use LXDE in my old computer ,as this release seems faster than Mint 15..Thanks,:)
Thanks!!! Downloading now! 🙂
-Update manager, Software Manager and some other applications that ask for password, when they open they make the system freeze for 30” and then they ask the password.
-Apt links (like this “install” button: http://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/gedit ) don’t have a default application that can open them
But it’s a good rc, in any case
Trivia:
-When i click in a “System Settings” submenu, it brings that submenu button to the top of the “system settings” window.
-A bit off-topic, but why gedit, evince and other applications are out-of-date?
Edit by Clem: They’re not “out of date”. We don’t always select the latest versions from upstream, but the ones that work best for us.
Although this is not a bug, but at the same time, more worse than bug.
language input short cut is terrible as it did on the saucy salamander
If our linux mint is not going to focus on the ubuntu-tablet
then I suggest to our linux mint team to abandon this very uncomfortable input method for other non-english countries including Korea
super + space brings malfunction for menu, everytime I input super + space for type in korean then I meet menu pops up , and even it works not welll either.
I hope there would be a alternatives.
No progress bar on USB Image Writer. Don’t know if it’s a bug or not!
Is that the cinnamon icon from Guild Wars 2 in the UI screenshot examples?
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Cinnamon_Stick
it is!
Clem, we’re still in the process of updating the Cinnamon, Nemo etc translations, so please sync them before the final release, or at least make an updated package available around the release. Thanks!
I saw Cinnamon, MATE, KDE, and Xfce editions on http://community.linuxmint.com/iso . Will they be released simultaneously, or are Cinnamon and MATE editions still the priority?
Edit by Clem: KDE is being prepared as we speak. Xfce isn’t far off from RC quality. With that said the quickest way to get all 4 editions released isn’t to release them all at the same time. We’re trying to release KDE and Xfce as close to Cinnamon and MATE as possible, but they’ll still come with a little delay.
First of all, thanks for this great release!
Bugs I found:
1- System settings / Regional settings / Language = Unable to add/remove any languages.
2- System settings / Regional settings / Formats = Unable to add/remove region formats.
3- System settings / Regional settings / System = Cannot change anything…???
4- Experienced total system hangs (twice) when adding/removing/deleting extensions or applets (only able to exit via console alt+fx and reboot)
5- Nemo crashed sometimes when browsing network
Suggestions:
1- Any chance for kernel 3.12? This is the first kernel which is able to shutdown my laptop (3.11 and lower always hang the system and requires power off button)
2- Remove java and make an option to install either Oracle or OpenJDK. Oracle java is the only one that works with my (and probably most) homebanking!
TIA
Edit by Clem: Hi, the crashes/freezes, we believe, are covered in the Roadmap by the XDG_RUNTIME_DIR bug. We’re fixing that in an update to systemd.
@RavetcoFX
nvidia-settings can be installed from synaptic for the 319 drivers.
How can I upgrade to this from mint 15?
@ linuxfam
re: Mintstick (USB Image Writer) progress bar.
My experience is that I use the mintstick “formatter” first, then the “writer”…and then the progress bar works all the time.
I’ve played with it for several hours and I didn’t find any issue except this bug:
I can’t install wireless driver via driver-manager
My laptop model: ׁHP6530b
Screenshot: http://www.imagebanana.com/view/jx2lm7vz/drivermanager.jpg
It seems that the broadcom wireless chipset is recognize well, but I can’t choose the upper button (it always go back to “do not use this device”)
Mint team: excellent work! I love it (Petra Cinnamon edition)
A oddity i have noticed is when trying to instal alot of 32 bit packages on the 64bit version I get alot of apt errors like the following:
Reading package lists… Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information… Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
wine : Depends: wine1.4 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
It seems to have something to do with 32 bit libraries and programs as most native 64 bit apps install fine. This happens when trying to install wine or steam on the 64 bit version of mint 16 cinnamon.
I go to system settings to change the default applications to the ones of my choice but it does not work. I tried to change media application for music and video to VLC but Totem remains as the default media player.
I had this issue with every release. I hope it will be fixed with Petra! 😀
I installed it in pae-enabled Virtualbox just to try edge-snapping (dragging window to corner while holding down control). The window tiles appropriately, but when I open other windows they partially cover the supposedly-snapped one 🙁 Great idea, but I can’t get it to work.
I played around with edge-snapping some more, and I get it now. The non-snapped windows need to be opened THEN MAXIMIZED. When maximized, they respect the snapped windows. Very nice, but I expected the snapped windows never to be covered by other windows, period. Clem, had you considered rigging it so that the snapped windows are never obscured?
Edit by Clem: No, there’s no need to tie it to that other feature (which is there also when right-clicking the titlebar and called “Always on top”). You’ve got snapping, always-on-top and visible-on-all-workspaces… and you can play with these 3 features independantly for greater control over each window.
CPU seemed locked at 100% after installing n-vidia 319 (might have been like that before, I only looked afterwards). Fixed on reboot. Power down does not always turn off (HP G60 laptop, fairly old dualcore 64bit). Weird things happened recovering files from Sony HD-PG5 USB hard drive at first (failed to mount, error messages reading files, spurious windows popped up). Also seems solved after another reboot. Looking forward to seeing some HTML5 login themes – I miss the steampunk one that was with Olivia. Seems sharp and fast otherwise.
Installed Cinnamon and could not install nemo-dropbox. It downloads, but after displaying “100%”, it hangs. Not having dropbox is a showstopper, for me.
I installed Mint 15 XFCE then changed the repo to look at Petra and did an apt-get update on a clean install everything works fine on it only bug is on laptop the power manager doesn’t seem to work on the DO NOTHING when I close the lid it always go’s to sleep not a big issue but annoying none the less.
The issue with the BCM-4313 WIFI card is FINALLY fixed and you can use prop drivers with Samba now where as in 15 if you changed to the prop driver samba would not recognise the cards existence so networking didn’t work.
FGLRX – ATI Radeon drivers install and work excellently from the driver manager but for some reason says its in a compatibilty mode on OPENGL but they do work 100% on the games I have tested Starcraft Under Wine runs great.
CPU Governor is working nicely panel applet runs fine allows me to change the governor on the fly so far even though my install is not an official release or an RC the XFCE upgrade works wonderful for me just the power manager issue hoping that will be fixed soon since XFCE edition is in testing now.
Can I just install this over the top of Mint 15, or will the install wipe everything ?
I know this is a newbie question, but please be gentle. I have never gone through a Mint upgrade before.
Thanks.
Ubuntu releases are only briefly supported if they are not LTS (nine months). This Mint release is based on one such Ubuntu release. The whole purpose of Ubuntu moving to this methodology was to provide a “rolling release” of sorts. That being said, if I upgrade to the final flavor of this release of Mint, will I be able to upgrade seamlessly to the next release by installing the next release of Mint over this one?
GREAT JOB! Mint 4ever…
Thanks.
Valeu pelo trabalho Clem 🙂
Abs.
Awesome!! Great work mint team, downloading now. Looking forward to using cinnamon 2.0 in all it’s glory.
I’m writing from mint 16 rc now. Very nice, if only it had an option to adjust mouse scrolling speed per lines
TO ALL ASKING ABOUT AN OS UPGRADE AS OPPOSED TO A CLEAN INSTALL:
Short answer: You PROBABLY can.
For more detail, please search the forums. Mint does not endorse such an upgrade officially because there IS the chance of issues. At the very least, perform a backup of your system/home folder. Don’t know how? Consult the forums.
Installed Wine, few other packages, when I go to open a windows app (civ2 for the record), it opens the wine gecko installer, and then that window turns “clear” and I just see the desktop behind it.
On my asus x550vb laptop I can’t turn on wireless network, while in live season. I did not try in installed mode. The WiFi card model is: Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter
Moving it up to the top of my screen, I saw it was a dialog box, so I clicked Install.
After install, open game, same transparent windows issue.
Successfully got a screenshot, tried to upload it to imgur via chromium, got “Page(s) Unresponsive” Kill Pages or Wait.
Screenshot in Firefox worked perfectly:
http://imgur.com/7HINPMt
Tried to go in game after that and just got transparent dialogs opening up all over that I couldn’t navigate.
Tried a few apps in Wine, they are all the same issue. Looks Cinnamon related.
Another Bug
Onscreen keyboard activates when clicking the menu on the panel
@malligt
Yes it can be installed manually, but it not being installed automatically is probably a regression
I was able to install dropbox from dropbox.com – even though it said it would work with thunar ( and I had nemo). I tried to install gnome, but it errored out: “Could not apply changes. Fix broken packages first.”
Another bug: Synaptic package manager crashes when you try to delete any repository:
Open synaptic/settings/repositories, select any of them and click delete button.
No login screen has no where to put in login information. Background, works.
Still no wacom tablet support?
nice nice distro 🙂 little bit sad but the mouse feeling is absolut shit ^^
Looks like another great Mint release. A couple of things I have noticed while testing in Virtualbox.
– Account details is in the appearance section of the control center…I would have thought it would be in preferences or administration.
– The new login screen (Mint X default) looks really great but displays both the user name and real name. Is this intentional? I would have thought just the user name would be shown.
– Could we have the ability to change the log in screen background?
I plan to install it on my PC soon, will report any more things that I find.
Edit by Clem: Hi Gabriel, you can’t configure themes, you can select other themes though. It’s ok for the full name to be displayed because you can switch to another theme, if MDM wasn’t themeable this would be considered a bug.
Congratulations on another release again for the Linux Mint Team. The version of Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon RC works well, but in at least 64 bits to see in System Monitor have a high consumption of CPU (2) and Memory. Tested, and my only major complaint here its. If System Monitor displays, there is a high consumption. Other than that, good version !! Once again Congratulations, but you have to fix that !!!!
I just installed Cinnamon version and for some reason the clock on the taskbar is in 12 hour format even though everything (what I can find anyway) is set to 24 hour format.
Edit by Clem: Hi Anders. It depends on your locale. The clock uses the most common format from your country (according to your language’s translator in Launchpad). You can right-click the clock applet and customize that format if you’re not happy with it.
Ok I have a problem Mint starts fine if on 1st boot I press the reset button. On 1st boot up everything works until X tries to start and I get the No Screens error. It happens when I use the Nvidia Drivers. Any version of them will produce the same result and NV drivers boot me up in recovery mode. Anyways when I get to the no screen error I press the reset button and everything works out. I ruled out power seeing how the NV drivers can start x and I can get in with Nvidia drivers if I hit the reset. I’ve tried everything I can think of I thought maybe Mint 16 would fix this issue. Maybe I’m looking over something very simple but I felt like I tried and exhausted my options. I think its something to do with X not seeing my GTX 550 Ti card the first time around. Other then that I have no issues. I love Mint if I could get it so it would startup the 1st time with out having to reset. I can say though that I learned a lot more about how Linux functions because of this. BTW I didn’t have this problem with Mint 13 down I think Xorg might have changed something in an update I’m not really sure but I try to help anyone that has a similar problem so we can compare notes.
Edit by Clem: Hi. I can’t treat it as a bug (I wouldn’t know what to fix here). You need to troubleshoot with the community. This kind of issues is usually solved by either using a kernel argument or upgrading/downgrading to a different version of the kernel.
Looking forward to another excellent release. I always make a point to suggest Mint for anyone considering dabbling in Linux. Hell, I’ve even made my in-laws big fans!
I have tried to install on two different systems with UEFI boot and GPT partition tables, and the installer crashed on both when installing grub. I have also installed on two non-UEFI boot and traditional partition table systems with no problems. Overall the release looks very good, but this UEFI problem is a big one. I have installed Ubuntu 13.10 on both of those UEFI systems with no problem.
Thanks,
jw
Edit by Clem: We noticed installing in EFI mode in the exact same conditions worked the first time and failed the second time. We assumed it was because grub was already there. We’ll test 13.10 to see if it behaves the same way.
Welcome Petra! Thank you Clem and the whole team who have and still are working flat out to make this release the best Mint so far. Linux Mint just keeps on getting better every release.
PS – Petra also is special to me as I dated her once…
Edit by Clem: 😉
Hi Mint team,
Does Petra finally have a dist-upgrade GUI? Please say it does! Because if it doesn’t, I still won’t be able to recommend Mint to the newbies. No one likes to do a manual backup-upgrade-restore every time there’s a new version of Mint. This is one area where Ubuntu still leads, and I hope you guys have implemented it, or are planning to.
Thank you, and congrats for yet another impressive release. Glad to see Cinnamon maturing so well.
Edit by Clem: Hi Dexter. It doesn’t. However I disagree on Ubuntu doing it right. We’re based on Ubuntu and we could use the very same solution they put forward. We don’t believe it’s an improvement though, quite the opposite. With that said, we’ve got plans for the future and they affect this among other things. We need to check a few things before talking about it publicly. In brief, nothing new in Mint 16 but we might come up with some important news for Mint 17.
Wonderful. Working perfectly. Did anyone find anything wrong?! If only it was a longer release than 6 months <
Bugs after upgrade:
– keyboard types numbers instead of some letters
– clock on panel won’t switch to 24 hour mode.
Other than that works like a charm.
Greetings to Clem and the team!
My problem is this: I’m not able to start the system. I only get this screen: “Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?”
When I choose “Yes”, I get this:
“…bonaire is not a recognized processor for this target…”
“(EE) Backtrace:… from 01 to 36…”
And at the end: “Segmentation fault at adress 0x8, Fatal Server error. Caught signal 11. Server aborting.
The same thing is whit Saucy Salamander.
I used MultiSystem to put ISO file on USB.
My configuration is this:
MB Asus M4A87TD/USB3, CPU AM3 AMD X2 Phenom II 555, 2x2GB 1600MHz Kingston HyperX, VGA AMD Radeon Sapphire 7790 1GB.
Any ideas how to make it run?
Due to lack of free time this will just have to wait a month or two…
Anyways I look forward to using it, because recently I really got tired of Ubuntu, and I have many good memory of Linux Mint as I used it a few years back
There appears to be a bug when logging out then back in as another user – the system just hangs, requiring a terminal reboot. Just switching users works fine. Otherwise things are working smoothly (on a dual core Intel desktop, 4GB RAM), thanks.
I hope that you will include a powerful search (like in Windows) in Cinnamon without using Synapse. As you type, it will automatically display the files that you’re looking for.
Hi Dev Team.
I was testing Cinnamon 2.0 in Petra and really are working fine.
There are only one issue for now and it is about the icons in the panel. The Mint’s update icon look normal and the same with Dropbox’s icon bue all the rest look bad, tight. I change the icon theme for other installed by default but never change it.
I change the panel config and it the same.
That’s the only issue for now, I will continue testing it 😀
Have a great day and thanks for your work.
Edit by Clem: Hi Leo, please tell us how to reproduce it. Does the problem still happen after you restart Cinnamon? (Alt+F2+r)
Mostly fine, 2 usability issues:
No 24 hr time toggle, my system tray clock is in 12 hr mode despite the rest of the system being 24hr (which I prefer over 12hr), the only way to change is with time syntax in the calendar settings (as opposed to date and time settings), fine for me to fix… not for newbies. Why dont we have a 24hr toggle option like other distros?
Software Sources needs some kind of progress indicator when scanning mirrors. Similarly likely nations of users should be near the top (Australia and Canada are at bottom of list), it takes many minutes to get there especially on the Ubuntu list. Actual measured speed would also be a nice touch, relative speed is of little use except identifying the fastest measured thus far. Given theres no indication of progress new users are likely to click slow US servers instead of fast local servers, and are then likely to update less often or ever. (US servers throughput here is lucky to hit a few hundred Kb/sec, compared to several Mb/sec for local servers)
Final issue is a minor one:
Driver Manager lists only one available driver for my Wifi, which is not used, yet my wifi works using another method. Driver Manager incorrectly states “This device is not working” and “Do not use this device is selected. “bcmwl-kernel-source” is the offered driver. But my card is working using “bcma-pci-bridge” which isnt listed. Wifi card is a BCM4313.
Hi everybody, there’s 2 important things to note:
– There’s one critical bug in systemd in this RC which causes apps and the desktop to randomly crash or freeze. It’s easy to spot though, if you look in your ~/.xsession-errors you’ll see permission problems on /run/user directories. If that’s the case, don’t report the issue to us, we already know about it (and there’s a fix coming up in an update to systemd).
– There is no longer any 12h vs 24h setting for the Cinnamon clock. That only makes sense in some locales and it was decided we would remove that setting. What there is now is a properly localized clock according to what’s the most commonly accepted format in your country, as well as the ability for you to customize that format. So if you’re in the USA, you’ll see 3:12PM, if you’re in France you’ll 15:12, and no matter where you are you’ll be able to change that to whatever format you prefer.
Clem, In Australia both are actually accepted equally… there really needs to be an option for such a basic setting (and the rest of the system uses 24hr so its pointless anyway)
Besides, its more of a personal preference than a state mandated option (-much- moreso than date formats and the like). Ex-/Servicemen in the US are likely going to prefer 24hr time for example.
@ Clem
Regarding the 12-24 hour clock ‘issue’. My Locale is set to the UK and the 24 hour format is shown, but the display stays at 12 hr. I HATE the 12 hr clock and wonder if you could let me/us know how to force a 24 hr display. TBH, I do not care what the format is for my country – I thought the advantage of Linux was diversity and choice.
It might seem a little silly for a clock option, but once my computer starts telling me whats best, I usually move on to something else… so will others (especially those of us burnt by Ubuntu previously). Please leave some basic configurability for what is a standard option. Even Windows lets you toggle! 🙁
DrTeeth, its in Calendar settings (right click on the clock), Select custom date format and write: “%H:%M” (without quotes).
So good so far however weirdly when I try to install games that uses MojoSetup it opens up in ternimal not in GUI. I did the same way of opening it in Linux Mint 15 XFCE and it opens up in GUI? I know it not that big deal but would be nice if it can be fixed? I not sure if this is related to just cinnemon but I will download 16 Mate to see if the issue is on there as well
So is this based on Ubuntu 13.10? I’ve had some trouble getting Ubuntu 13.04 and derivatives like Linux Mint 15 to run properly on my laptop (fan control, wifi and Bumblebee trouble).
Could you give me an estimated release date, perhaps? Assuming RC stands for Release Candidate that shouldn’t be too far off, right? 🙂
On a different note: My compliments. As a 14 year old kid I had a lot of fun using Linux Mint 8, and then Linux Mint 10 (I skipped 9. Don’t think I ever realised back then that there was a new release). Linux Mint 8 and 10 were simply fenominal for me, and as a Linux newbie they thought me a whole lot. With Linux Mint 11, and then again with Linux Mint 12, I encountered a lot of problems, and it was frankly an unstable mess, in my experience. Ever since I despised Linux Mint.
A few days ago I had another look at Linux Mint 15, and I think I owe you an apology 🙂 Frankly, I think it, together with Elementary OS 0.2, is the best newbie-and-power-user friendly distro we have out there today. Thanks for the great release, and keep up the good work. I’ve had a lot of doubts with the course of the project for the last few years, but in the end it seems it’s all paid off quite well.
Here’s hoping for another great release!
Here is one Bug i have spotted the update manager loads at startup even after it has been removed from the startup list
Also it would be nice if the Linux Kernel 3.12 was included as it can offer big frame rate boosts over Kernel 3.11 on Amd Video card for full benchmark see the test on http://www.phoronix.com/
Hello! At first, thank you Clem, nice work as usually!
Just found one but very annoyng bug.
Just installed LM Cinnamon 16RC x64 and saw that the network manager hasn’t any ability to add ADSL connection. From the pop-up list i can chose vpn only.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/community.linuxmint.com/+bug/1251530
In previous versions of LM Cinnamon has some trick with dsl connection)
When you open network manager – standing in wired – click on options – then you seeing window “Editing wired”, but if you don’t close this window and click on “options” one more – it will be opened another window “Network connections”. Where i was able to set my dsl settings.
But, in LM 16 it doesn’t work, the second window with “Network connections” doesn’t appear.
I noticed something while installing this RC in VirtualBox 🙂
In the “Install Software” slide of the installation slideshow, it shows Picasa under “Features software”, but Google dropped Picasa for Linux a little over a year ago; http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/04/google-officially-drop-picasa-for-linux
I don’t think it’s really the best idea to feature a piece of software that is no longer under development or supported on Linux. Perhaps it would be better to replace it with something else Windows/Mac users are familiar with, like Google Chrome (no idea whether you’re actually allowed to include it in the repositories. Probably not :/)? Or perhaps GIMP or Dropbox?
Another bug: Mint menu requires Logout/restart before new application links are displayed.
Thanks for the Mint 16 RC release. Good work with Cinnamon 2.0.
I’ve already moved it to Trusty Tahr base. It had been working for last few hours in the TT base. Will give feedback later.
Possible Bug:
Is it possible that Mint16RC uses the EFI Identifier “ubuntu”?
Installed in record time – 7 mins!!
Log-in assumes right handed mouse.
Clem, I’m loving this release candidate as per my other posting in the October Monthly News blog.
I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned this, as I haven’t got the time right now to read through all the other comments, but I’ve found that installing nemo-dropbox sends cinnamon into meltdown. If you restart Cinnamon afterwards, or log out and back in, or reboot, Cinnamon crashes, and resorts to software rendering permananently. It just won’t restart. Uninstalling nemo-dropbox, sets things back to normal again, and cinnamon works fine.
Also, occasionally when adding a new applet or desklet, Cinnamon may restart itself, and the chosen desktop wallpaper returns to the Mint 16 default wallpaper.
Those are the only two issues I’ve found with this r/c since I’ve been using it from Wednesday afternoon.
System Specs:
Asus M2N68 M’board, AMD Phenom II X4 940 CPU, 8GB RAM, 2 x 1TB HDD, AMD/ATI HD4600 Graphics.
This is obviously the best Linux Mint release and the best Linux distro ever out! But on Cinnamon one bug is still not fixed
BUG: when I click on the window list to minimize and maximize sometimes the windows don’trespond and so I have to maximize another window so that I can mainimize or maximize the previous one!!
Plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz fix this it’s the only bug i found !!
peeerfect job Mint team
@Simon
you can download the steampunk mdm theme at http://samriggs.deviantart.com/gallery/
just extract the zip and recompress it as a tar.gz and drag it into the html window in login screen
Administration>Login Window then the html under theme tab
it will install it for you.
deviantart doesn’t allow tar.gz so I had to zip it up instead.
all my themes are there.
Hope it helps ya out

Bug: Icons keep disappearing from desktop especially when I log out then log in!!
Bug : Cinnamon crashed on my HP laptop when I tried to enable an applet
I can confirm the bugs described in comments
– 42 from sergio (this was already an issue in Olivia), editing the software sources via Synaptic ends up in corrupted software sources.
– 58 from PB
I’m happy to experience that Cinnamon gets more and more mature.
Thank you for Petra!
i have only 2 problems:
radio tray and kazam are not working. i can’t say why and if this thing has something to do with the system or only with cinnamon 2.
Logout sound missing from the sound events
3 problems found so far:
sound
—–
I think this is caused by sound configuration problems. Skype doesn’t work and crashes often.
I can’t work out how to disable not used HDMI port. Configuring sound devices in Skype doesn’t work. I am flooded with 16 meaningless options for sound devices. When I managed to make Skype partially work, it stopped working after logging out.
cinnamon
——–
Cinnamon crashes sometimes. It seems that switching to software rendering fixes the problem. When it starts crashing restart doesn’t fix the problem.
Teamviewer
———-
I can’t make it work at all.
Hi,
I’ve been using Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon 64bit edition for a few hours and I found this:
– changing default applications don’t work (after setting VLC for video files, videos continue to open in Videos application)
– cinnamon settings (changing default applications) doesn’t recreate mimapps.list, maybe expected behaviour (if deleted only setting new association in Nemo creates file)
– it’s probably individual extension fault but clicking on Configure in Cinnamon settings/Extensions for Coverflow Alt-Tab extension does nothing
– tooltips in Cinnamon settings “jump” from left top corner of screen (created there and then moved to the right place)
– random freezes of Cinnamon when using Cinnamon settings – not responding on any keys (even Ctrl-Alt-Backspace) but mouse was working, needed restart (two situations I remember: happened when testing various Alt-Tab transitions and hovered mouse on application icon preview, other situation was when changing something in settings then clicking on time tray applet)
– Cinnamon settings / regional settings – “minus” buttons for removing items should always be disabled?
– mouse stays “busy” more than it should when opening applications that need Root rights (Login window, Driver manager, Users & groups …)
– when emptying trash from right click menu on Trash icon, dialog for confirmation was always showing snapped to the right side of screen, after restart was ok
– Alt-Tab Icons and Window preview – black background has bad gradient (seems to happen only when using external monitor)
– Expo preview is slow
– sometimes icons change from default Mint icons to some other (maybe some fallback icons?), issue also on Linux Mint 15
– Synaptic Package Manager – cannot minimize it by clicking on panel item (toggle maximize/minimize) while installation in progress (dialog shown)
– sometimes (couldn’t reproduce, maybe related to disconnecting external monitor …) laptop monitor stays turned off even after trying to change “modes” of display or turning it on in Cinnamon settings (usualy help)
– “Send by email” is showing when right clicking Computer, Home, Trash or removable drives icons on Desktop (also another really minor issue is that “Send by email” and “Format” should have “…” on the end)
– Software manager was showing that one operation is in progress (99%) but when clicking to see operations list was empty (I was installing few programs and maybe canceled one of them from list – if it helps)
– removing programs from Software Manager doesn’t work (it says it is removed but program is still installed)
– Driver manager list is always empty even Nvidia-319 driver installed (I’m also not sure if it should allow installation for detected hardware)
– tooltip on Power applet says “Keyboard” (I am using wireless Keyboard)
– removing extensions, themes, desklets, applets is only possible using right click (maybe it would be better to have button for that in future relases)
– installer installed EFI grub although I am not using EFI (needed to manually install grub-pc, probably not Linux Mint issue)
I am using Asus N76VZ laptop (Intel i7 and nVidia GT650) with external monitor connected.
Hope this helps, keep doing good work,
Best regards
Mint16 cannot install package grub-efi-amd64-signed. Why it try to do that if I have not EFI, UEFI and so on? Also I can’t install grub after from terminal but receiving other errors (something about “unable to determine /cow path”) 🙁
Perhaps this fixed the Skype sound problem:
$ sudo aptitude install pavucontrol
select sensible settings and restart sound
$ pulseaudio –kill
$ sudo alsa force-reload
$ pulseaudio –start
@ cryogenic88
Many thanks for that.
Thank you for your precious developing of Linux Mint. I’m trying the live dvd of Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon 64bit on a usb stick.
I would like to do a suggestion and report few problems about localization (I’m Italian).
First of all: on the live dvd, if I open the Language Support I’ll get the message “The language support is not installed completely”. This message refers to the English language, that is the default of the live dvd. Why is it incomplete? There are some missing packages that the Language Support will download for me, but I expect that they should be included in the live dvd. Then, if I select Italian language during installation, after installation the problem is the same, the language support will be incomplete, some packages are missing.
Second problem: the keyboard layout, that is an English keyboard by default. I know that I have to go to Regional Settings, then Keyboard Layouts, then add Italian and finally move up Italian over English… but it’s not so user-friendly for a new user. Why the live-dvd doesn’t ask for the keyboard layout during the boot or at the end of the boot? It’ll be nicer and more user friendly… There are some situations in which some people want to use the live Linux Mint without installing it.
Third suggestion: do a bigger live-dvd with all the language packages included for all languages or, if it will be too much big, the most used languages. This proposal is for several reason: a dvd can contain about 4,4GB of software, nowadays the usb sticks are cheap and can contain a lot of GB, but to redownload all the language packs after every installation of Linux Mint can be boring and not always possible. Example: I have an adsl line, so I can easly download the live-dvd, that I can try to install to a friend that has only a mobile (and slow) connection with limits in the maxium Internet traffic per month… in this case, it’s better that all the necessary packages, included the localization packages, are in the live-dvd.
Thank you for your attention.
Finally, I have a question that is not related to the languages packs but to Firefox. If I go to http://translate.google.com/, I’ll find “Add Google Translate” below the search engines near the address bar: that’s ok. But if I go to https://www.google.it/ I have no automatic option to add Google in the search bar. This is not user friendly and it can prevent a lot of new user from adding Google in the search bar (the most of people use it). Maybe it should be fixed, because for new users can be important.
Edit by Clem: Hi Francesco, regarding Google, that is down to the Google website, not Firefox itself.
AMD Driver Issue
AMD 13.11 (13.25.18) Beta Drivers refuse to build. I use the command “./amd-catalyst-13.11-beta6-linux-x86.x86_64.run –buildpkg Ubuntu/saucy” and I get comments replying back saying that the distro unsupported however it is supported because I have installed the 13.11 drivers on Ubuntu saucy several times and on linux mint 16 rc I cant for some reason.
(I have an AMD Radeon 7950 GPU)
Cinnamon Hangs/Freezes on Root Password Authorization
Programs such as “Driver Manager” and “Software Sources”, any program that puts an overlay on the screen and then has the box to input the root password causes a big hang/freeze for several seconds on the default drivers shipped with Linux Mint 16 RC. On other drivers, such as the AMD 13.6 beta it seems to perform fine.
The cursor can be scrolled way past the right border of the screen. On the left side, it stops at the edge.
I cannot find a way to set timezone to local (America/Central) from live user session. Time in the clock on the lower toolbar appears to be locked to UTC.
Hello. Petra looks good. Iḿ especially impressed with the new MDM login. Just a few bugs:
Setting: I installed LM16 cinnamon 32 bit with / on a seperate partition and /home on the home-pertition already used by my main LM15.
1. When adding new users Iḿ not asked for my admin password. Is this a feature or a bug?
2. Freeze-up: Adding new users which already have a home directory (on LM15) seems to work ok: like the users ‘face’ is found instantly, but at the first as the new user it takes about 2 minutes for the desktop to appear. And it is in ‘software rendering mode’. The desktop freezes after two menu clicks or other actions. I can only hard shutdown the machine. The second login as the new user is ok.
3. MDM – switching user (I already noticed this bug in the old MDM): I switch user, get the login screen, bur decide return to the existing session. Then it says that user is already logged. That’s okay, but it will not repond when entering the password. Only when omitting on entering the wrong password and/or toggling the userlist, then I can return to the already active user.
4. Firefox embedded video by JWPlayer (6.6.3689): starting this video repeatedly gives a distorted image (long white lines or a distorted second image of the firefox frame in which it is playing). Mostly it will prceed normally after a few seconds. It may be a firefox bug, or JWPlayer, but I thought I should mention. The same videos do not have this bug in the current updated LM15. see several videos at: http://www.speld.nl/category/video/
Hope it all helps releasing a great Petra.
oh forgot my machine: Intel Core 12-3220 CPU @ 3.30Ghz x 2/ 3.8 GB mem graphics Intel HD integrated (using the default driver)
@42 sergio – Synaptic isn’t tied into and (I don’t believe) isn’t compatible with Mint’s “Software Sources” tool which is the one you should be using to add and remove repositories/PPAs, keys and change mirrors. You can access the tool via the Menu or MintUpdate via “Edit/Software Sources”.
@58 PB – I can confirm this. I saw the same thing in both the Live session and when installed. Switching users works but logging out of one user and logging in as another, the display turns black and just hangs there. The mouse is still movable though and the “rolling” wait icon is still spinning.
Tried the 64bit version (by usb stick) on a laptop HP Pavilion dv6
Bug: after installation, I chose to continue to use the live, then I clicked to Menu, the in the Shutdown icon… and the system freezed. I had to do an hardware reset to reboot.
Bug: on the installed system, I opened the Driver Manager and I wrongly get that the BCM43225 802.11b/g/n wireless card doesn’t work (the message is “Questo dispositivo non funziona”, that translated means “This device doesn’t work”) and that no proprietary driver is used. In truth and luckily, this wireless card is working very well.
Bug: if I open a very large text file with the default editor (gedit), such as a database dump of 132MB, it requires several minutes to open it (?!) with a cpu load of 100%… I installed by the Package Manager and tried the “emacs23” editor: it opens the same file in one second. Maybe gedit should be fixed for opening very large files or you can choose a different default text editor for Linux Mint.
Suggestion: the configuration of the date/time format (of the clock in the bottom-right corner) using a string such as “%A %e %B, %H:%M” is a thing for experted users or programmers. A new user expects an easier graphical way to do the same thing. Why don’t you try to do it more user friendly?
Edit by Clem: We did. It was not ready in time for Cinnamon 2.0 though.
I had the best experience with this version of Mint yet. However I miss the working WIN+D keyboard shortcut to go to desktop. (I am running the Cinnamon x64 Desktop version).
Also I noticed the firewall isn’t included by default anymore. I am wondering if that isn’t a security threat.
Edit by Clem: The ufw firewall is installed and disabled by default, just as before. You can install “gufw”, the graphical configuration tool if you want. That was removed for branding reasons (it depicts itself as an Ubuntu tool).
dear clem, please provide us with a better solution to upgrade with our old apps intact other than backing up tons of data. mint backup tool is not very efficient. Mint is taking such great strides. we will love upgrade from distro to distro. I hope you read this.
Edit by Clem: Agreed on mintbackup, it needs attention. We’re considering sticking to LTS (i.e. releasing every 6 months but only changing base every 2 years). Nothing is decided yet. You know we don’t recommend upgrades the way they’re done in Ubuntu. With that said, we hear you, we know there’s a demand there for people not to reinstall every 6 months and this is a strong argument for us going forward.
* got the WIN+D keyboard shortcut to work easily. However it would be nice if it was activated by default.
hi Clem,
as the User 53 Dexter says, this would be a great thing with a dist-upgrade gui. Because: it’s really annoying pushing files between two machines each time, when a new version of LinuxMint comes out. So I agree to 53 Dexter, that LinuxMint should have a dist-upgrade gui to performa a complete dist-upgrade to the new release without having to push the files between two machines or saving them to usb-sticks or external harddrives….
This is on the first point costly (money) and on the second point time-wasting.
So please come up with an idea for such a thing. I also agree, that Ubuntu is right on that one point, but wrong on many other points. Just as an example: what referrs to the file-manager, there LinuxMint is right or even what referrs to the new driver-installer or even what referrs to the new Cinnamon-settings and to the many good Cinnamon-Applets…
This is, where LinuxMint es in leading position, no doubt about that!! But to come back to this dist-upgrade gui, there Ubuntu has a pretty good idea. This should be thought over, Clem. There, LinuxMint lacks something also in my opinion.
Greetings from
Mintkatze
Edit by Clem: I agree with the problem, not the solution. We’re considering something that might change all that though (sticking to LTS only) but it’s too early to speak about it.
@ Clem,
what I would appreciate at such a dist-upgrade gui, would be, that personal files could be kept without having to save them to external hdd or to usb-stick or even to disc or even to other reserve-machines.
For me, this would need so many discs (video-files, documents, other multimedia-files) or even usb-sticks, that this would become a costly investment.
So please please come up with something about that soon. I would really greet that and – as I said – I agree to 53 Dexter in this point.
And for all german useres: my new LinuxMint-plattform is online here:
http://mintlinux.de
Here you will find a new forum, a new Blog for LinuxMint and – as a further new feature – you will soon find a working Wiki on this plattform!!
So have a look there, you german users.
Greetings from
Mintkatze
Sweet. Clean Boot. A few minor adjusts after restart. Great work all!!!
@ 79 Brahim,
I have seen that on the screenshots shown here in the blog. This would be cool, if we could set a lougout-sound when we shutdown our machines. Many artworkers have that already in their sound-themes.
@ Clem: could you please add a logout-sound option in these sound-selections??
Thanks,
Mintkatze
Edit by Clem: Yes, not that close to release, but we’ll add one in the future.
Hi guys, I just wanted to report my Mint 16 install experience and some bugs I’ve been having. My computer is composed of an AMD Phenom II x3 720 BE, AMD 7870 XT & 8GB of RAM. My TV is a Sharp 32″ LED hooked up through HDMI. I’m also dual-booting with Windows 7 x64.
–Black Screen During Initial Installation
To start, I burned the x64 bit Mint 16 Cinnamon RC to a disc using Windows 7 and had Windows verify the disc. I then rebooted my system to start the Mint install process. After that I let the installer boot past its initial menu automatically. This then caused my computer to hang up at a black screen and my TV went to sleep mode after a few seconds.
For a workaround I had to reboot my computer by cutting the power. Then I had to go back to the initial Mint install menu and select “run in compatibility mode”. This allowed me to boot up and install Mint 16 under “software rendering mode”.
–Black Screen After Linux Mint Splash Page
After installing and rebooting, Linux Mint then kept getting hung up on a black screen after loading past the Linux Mint splash page. My TV would again go into sleep mode a few seconds after the black screen came up.
To try to work around this I rebooted and opened up grub. Then I switched “quiet splash” to “radeon.modset=0”. In the past this fix has allowed me to boot into Linux Mint under the software rendering mode, and then install the latest AMD beta linux driver. Unfortunately, this no longer appears to work so I had to try another workaround.
For my second attempt at a workaround, I restarted my computer. Then I selected Linux Mint recovery mode in the grub boot menu. After loading recovery mode and staring at the options like a deer in headlights, I just decided to boot from there without changing anything. This allowed Linux Mint to fully boot into software rendering mode, somehow. After that I promptly installed the AMD 13.11 v6 beta driver. This appears to have fixed my black screen during boot-up problems.
–Mint-X Theme Black Screen
Another issue I had is that when I selected the Mint-X theme, my screen went black and I had to ctrl+alt+delete to recover it. The other themes seem to work fine.
–Steam Related
This last issue is a problem with Steam itself, not Mint. If you’re using proprietary AMD drivers when you install the Steam client, Steam won’t run because it thinks openGL isn’t working. To fix this you have to install Steam, then reinstall the proprietary video drivers.
Anywho, despite the problems I was having, Linux Mint is my favorite Linux distro by far.
Bug:
On install screen, it ought to say that you are installing “Linux Mint 16”, not just “Linux Mint” — it makes it confusing when you get the message “do you want to install Linux Mint along side Linux Mint 16”
More significantly, I am running Mint 16-RC 64 bit, with an Nvidia card (I have installed driver Nvidia-319; I get the same problem with Nvidia-319-updates). One user can log on and use the system fine. If they then log out and a different user logs in they simply get a blank screen with a mouse pointer. If I ctrl-alt-F1 I can log on in a text window and see that their start up applications are running. Just no display. It works fine if I simply lock screen then switch user.
BUG
Both editions of Petra fail to remember sound volume on reboot and set Username in Xchat when set in network list
Thanks a lot, this look like a great release.
I tested Linux Mint 16 “Petra” Cinnamon RC loading directly from a USB-stick on a Notebook, centrino, sincle core 1,6 GHz. Most of the things are pretty fast and snappy. I was especially impressed by the speed of the main menu. 🙂 Thanks!
I discovered one annoying regression (compared to Mint 15):
When playing with the edge-tiling I repeatedly failed to move the windows around quickly. After rightclick-holding the “title-bar” of the window in many cases only the cursor moved – but the window stayed untouched. By trial and error I discovered, that I had to wait a moment after the rightclick – the time it took on my machine to select the window. :-/ If I move my cursor and at the same time I rightclick-hold over the title-bar, the window does not move. In result I have a hard time getting windows out of my way quickly.
On Lisa this worked without an issue.
All the best

With nvidia-current installed attempting to shutdown or restart from mdm hangs with black screen. Have to shutdown with the power button. 64 bit Mint Cinnamon
In linux mint 15 cinnamon, when I start Audacious, cinnamon crash.
Is linux mint 16 the same ?
Don’t know if this is known, but it still has the disappearing Desktop bug.
Set folders to open each in their own window.
Open a folder that has several sub-folders.
Lasso two or more sub-folders in that window.
Right-click and choose Open.
Poof!
The only other thing I’d like to see is an option to have windows open where last closed. Or at least a preset distance from where the pointer was when the mouse button was clicked.
Otherwise, loving Mint/Cinnamon, especially scrolling through windows with the wheel. Thanks for the great work.
magnet links work. just drag the magnet link from Firefox to an open transmission.

@Clem
Hi clem, I was checking about the issue for the icon panel.
Apparently the problem is caused by the different themes.
With some themes created for Linux Mint, some shorten the space between icons, others extend it.
No matter if I reboot Cinnamon or PC, is something in the code of the theme.
I install a theme outside of the normal list, and the space between icons is normal. Always is a monochromatic icons, I don’t know if all the icon set in Mint is the same but no matters what I choice, always display the same icon set.
What I did was this:
Select a theme, in “other options” I change Window Borders and Controls.
To see what I talking about just need change up to another themes and watch the panel.
Another thing, I install a deskets called Clocktow desklet, this desklets make a total crash in Cinnamon. I use cntrl+alt+backspace to login again, was the only way. Then I remove this desklets as active and login again to solve the problem. I don’t know if this is important or not.
Sorry for my bad English and I hope help you in something.
Take care and have a nice day.
Very Nice, Install had a hang up at the very end on my x86 system – but did install correctly, the wireless setup went well too – but the dialogue on cinnamon for ndisgtk did not show up until I entered my password then OK. I do need Google Chrome and will wait as I here there are problems with the current stable release? I’ll never look at Unity again – Hooray for the Mint Team!
Two issues, Petra will not start on an AMD Kabini laptop from a flash stick (FWIW no model name, just the AMD demo laptop/FFRD). It does run in software mode though.
The same system occasionally will not recognize the keyboard and mouse. Upon boot it gets to the login screen and nothing.
Not specific to Petra but the no mouse/keyboard is a persistent problem. On the above Kabini system with Mint 14 you get keyboard and mouse 1 of 5 times maybe. Mint 15 on the same system was never able to get keyboard and mouse no matter what I did, 16 looks to be more like 14 in behavior but I have not extensively tested it yet.
On the current AMD Trinity/richland reference laptop (Again no model it is a reference design) the same behavior happens on 15 but I have not tried 14 and 16 there yet. Maybe this weekend if I get time. Production versions of the same laptop (Asus N56D from memory) exhibits the same behavior on 14 and 15.
I searched for a solution but have not found one yet. There are several posts about it but I have found nothing to either persistently reduce or prevent the chance of no keyboard/mouse on boot. Given that it happens across multiple generations of AMD CPU and at least three generations of Mint (14-16), it looks like a serious problem ideas anyone?
Thanks,
-Charlie
Smokin! 18 seconds to full boot on a latitude e4200 with 64 bit mint 16.
hi people,
I am currently doeing saving my data to external devices for preparing the installation of LinuxMint 16 RC.
One question: do we need to do a fresh install, when the final release comes out or is it just sufficient to do the regular updates to get to the final release?? Or how are things with this??
Greetings

I loaded this up on Virtualbox 4.2.10 on Linuxmint 15 MATE. It failed to install guest additions, (I assume the old version of Virtualbox doesn’t support the new linux kernel or something like that). After this, I logged out to try the new login screen, X crashed at this point. After a reboot, X started up just fine. Hopefully this is helpful in some way!
Bugs:
– A virtual(?) monitor in addition to the only one in use by my computer appears in displays and must be disabled.
– Using the keyboard brightness adjuster causes cinnamon to crash, then restart and use a different resolution. (Acer Aspire 5742G)
Neither of these issues occurred on Olivia.
– Occasionally the cursor will flicker when being moved.
– I believe super + d used to minimize all windows, and it doesn’t anymore.
The main use I have for window snapping is using super+up to maximize a window. It seems like this isn’t possible anymore and is an inconvenience. Maybe a setting like the similar one for mouse snapping?
Very good overall!
^Update
All the erratic behavior was fixed by updating. I’d still like to see the changes to super+d and super+up.
Hi
Seems really fantastic and faster than Olivia ! I did put int in a VM but I can’t connect to the internet in the VM , which I was able to mint when creating Mint 14 and 15 VM …..
I am using a mobile Huawei E153 Broadband to surf….
What must I do ?

@Mintkatze: As seen in previous releases, your version should automatically upgrade to the final version if you just install your updates normally – there’s no need to download the Final Release ISO again.
Heya all,

Bug about installing of applets in the bottom panel: if I open the list of downloadable applets, the “more info” link for each applet is not clickable (this should be fixed).
If I double click on an applet name, nothing happens.
If I select the radio box to choose an applet and then I’ll click the button to install it, the applet is installed but it’s not active: maybe a new user expects to have it immediately in the panel after the download… in fact forcing the user to come back in the list of the installed applet to enable the just downloaded applet is not user friendly, in my opinion.
Then, in the downloadable applets list the “Network speed monitor” (netspeed@adec) that I always used is missing… and I didn’t find anything of equivalent to monitor in real time the download and upload rate. I tried to manually installing it to /home/francesco/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/netspeed@adec copying the files from an installation of Linux Mint 15, but with no lucky: I enabled it but it doesn’t work. Is there any netspeed monitor in Linux Mint 16? For me (and maybe for a lot of advanced users) it’s important.
I have also a small suggestion: the available wallpapers are very few. They are very beautiful and cool, but much more wallpapers can be nicer for new users… and also an option to have an automatic change of wallpaper (for example at every boot or every day or every hour) in a group of images chosen by the user can be appreciated.
I also noted that the available templates in LibreOffice are very few: maybe a new user can prefer a lot of available templates in a fresh installation to enjoy and use better Libreoffice.
Of course, in my comments I’m focusing more on tips to do a better Linux distribution (in my opinion) than on reporting bugs: I hope however to be helpful.
Just installed Linuxmint 16 cinnamon. Why does Chrome render fonts differently in Linuxmint than it does Ubuntu 13.10? A little disappointed with the result. I’ve match my fonts elements to match that of Ubuntu, but Google Chrome doesn’t render them the same. Is there something I’m missing here?
Bug: I installed the desklet “Network usage monitor” (netusage@30yavash.com), I added it to the desktop… but it didn’t appear in the desktop.
Bug:Desktop freezes when i set a picture as a wallpaper on cinnamon!
Bug: Minitube window control and menu bar moved to the right side!!!
Only two issues I’ve had are
1. the Mint Splash screen is not appearing, and seems to be defaulting to the Ubuntu 13.10 splash screen.
2. The Mint logo/icon that should appear next to the “Start” menu disappeared from the panel after the first reboot.
My first thought was drivers, but I’m not reverting to fallback or software rendering mode and I’m using fglrx drivers for HD Radeon 7870
Not huge issues, but frustrating nonetheless. Everything else is superb.
@Brahim
Re:Bug:Desktop freezes when i set a picture as a wallpaper on cinnamon!
All I can offer in reply is this is not true on my Mint 16 RC installations.
The desktop works perfectly at after I made a wallpaper change. (64 bit)

Re: “Both editions of Petra fail to remember sound volume on reboot”
For what it’s worth:
Not in my own experience with 2 installs of Mint 16 RC-64 bit (cinnamon): One on a desktop pc, and one on a laptop in a virtualbox… all with zero sound problems.
Sound (volume setting, etc) is solid as a rock for me on both
(I can’t speak to this issue on the Mate edition as I’m not using it presently).
@ StT
The firewall is included by default.
In a terminal:
sudo ufw enable
You can get the firewall gui (GUFW) from synaptic.
Thank you to all the Linux Mint developers. I have been a Linux user for about a decade now and a Linux Mint user for the last few months.
I’m very happy a well-functioning desktop focused project like this exists with so many other OS’s catching touch-fever. Touch has it’s place but some of us actually want to get things done 😛
As requested, here are some bugs I noticed in Linux Mint 16 RC1, 64bit, Cinnamon, Intel HD4000 gpu.
BUG1: Press alt-tab to bring up the program switcher, you can move the mouse cursor over the icons in the switcher but clicking on them does nothing, in LM15 you could click an icon to bring up the corresponding program.
–
BUG2: Press alt-tab to bring up the program switcher then roll the mouse wheel. The selector always moves to the right with wheel-up or wheel-down, in LM15 the selector would move in relation to the wheel direction (wheel up = selector left)(wheel down = selector right).
–
BUG3: There seems to be a tiny 1 pixel frame around windows that prevents the rightmost pixel of the right scroll bar from being clickable.
For example LM15: open Nemo, go to a folder with a lot of files like /usr/bin/, throw the mouse cursor all the way to the right edge of the screen and click on the scrollbar = windows scrolls.
LM16 doing the same thing will cause the scrollbar to do nothing until you move the mouse cursor a pixel to the left. An easy way to see the comparison in LM16 is to install chromium and change (settings) > (appearance) > (use system title bar and borders), using system borders will cause the rightmost pixel to be unclickable.
Mint 16 is still working very well in the Trusty Tahr base, to which the Saucy base was moved to. Quite an impressive release. I haven’t found any hiccup yet, and hope I won’t.
If it is working without a break with the TT base, this Mint 16 RC release is going to be a very good one.
Thanks again, Clem!
Hi Clem
You are right about being able to change the theme in mdm. I do like the new default theme but having the ability to change the background to match the background on the desktop or set to another picture would make it even better. It may be something to consider for future Mint releases? Just my thoughts.
Anyway, keep up the awesome work.
A bug I discovered just now.
When applying the Adwaita theme to the controls, the breadcrumbs in Nemo do not look right. They have a strong border around them and there is no highlighting when hovering over each breadcrumb.
Another thing that I have picked up.
The terminal has no menus along the top. Is this intentional?
Edit by Clem: Yes, you can right-click and “Show menubar”. We like options to be visible by default. The terminal is a bit different though. First because its options are a little techie.. second because the menubar gets in the way of some terminal apps (in nano for instance it gets in the way of using “Alt+r”).
Just a small bug I have encountered so far:
Under: System Settings/ Sound/ Sound Effects/
When I choose custom sounds (I used .wav files and they worked for a bit as they should), it does not remember them.
I’m in LOVE with the new Cinnamon, thank you so much Mint team…
Bug:
Nemo will open 3 instances of the new-launcher action when activated in the context menu
Hi,
– When using full screen mode in Chromium or Virtualbox (non-free) it is impossible return to the window mode.
– The sound applet does not close Banshee by clicking on the close icon.
– Not properly installed the package php5-mcrypt, Ubuntu 13.10 problem.
PC Intel i7-3770T, Xeon E3-1200 – Cinnamon
@Gabriel
Yes the terminal not having menus is intentional, it give it a cleaner look, you can re-enable them by right clicking and go “Show menubar”
I have been sticking to using Mint13 Maya, but playing it safe, installed the 32bit version of Mint16 Petra “Bruce’s Way” on a SanDisk Cruzer Switch 16GB USBkey, only to find that although libdvdcss is already included, neither Videos (aka Totem) nor VLC Player can play videoDVDs, only briefly displaying a window before failing to play.
Neither Acidrip nor Handbrake-GTK function whilst previously ripped video files play as before with Videos or VLC.
Error occuerred..
Have a look at the screenshot..

By the way, new terminal is awesome. Nemo is lot faster now.
Thanks a lot.. 😉
hi together,
data-saving is completed and downloading LinuxMint 16 Petra now. I hope to get it run smooth.

@ 136 Riju95,
yes, this seems like a problem with the mint-server. Your system could not get a connection to the mint-server.
One question: did you experience any problems with your internet-router?? Could it have happened, that your internet-connection broke?? Did you see a further error-message saying something like this:
“not connected to the internet”
“you are now offline”
?? This could be one explanation for such a problem.
I am not sure about why this happened for you. So you should also check, that you are connected to the internet.
Greetings
Mintkatze
Now my Linux Mint 16 RC has not only the TT base, but also the Linux kernel 3.12.0-031200-generic. Even the Mint Update Manager doesn’t give any problems. All the apps are responding very fast! And, I like the wallpapers by Rapciu!
No hiccups at all. I am using a Lenovo B460 laptop.
Take care!
Chanath
BUG: if I press ALT+F2 and then enter “nemo ftp://ftp.mydomain.xyz” to access to my personal ftp server trough nemo, I’ll get a request of username and password: it’s OK. The problem is that if I select the option to remember forever the username and password, it will not have effect: if I reboot Linux Mint, the next time I’ll try to access my ftp trough nemo I’ll get the request of username e password. So… nemo doesn’t remember my credentials… it’s frustrating.
I use a Mint 15 on my Work laptop. Can I just upgrade with Apt-get and get the new 16 on my laptop? Or do I need to reinstall Mint?
After all upgrades from Mint 15 to 16, Mate doesn’t work. There is a message in the window, something like: Missing row “Exec” in file mate-session. Instead of this will be used a backup session gnome… So I write this from Cinnamon.
Hi Clem,
I really like this RC and Cinnamon 2.0 is just amazing. Thanks a lot.
But I noticed a nasty bug. In this release it is impossible to install PlayOnLinux after adding xorg-edgers PPA (I am using Nvidia driver from there).
In Ubuntu 13.10 there is no such problem. I found out experimentally what causes this problem – this is system improvement “Higher APT priority, out of the box support for PPA repositories”.
After the removal of 12-15 lines from the file /etc/apt/preferences.d/official-package-repositories.pref PlayOnLinux has been successfully installed.
Please explain to me some other system improvements.
“Safer kernel updates” – is it something like less frequent kernel update? And if so, how can I return the old method of updating?
“APT “recommends” disabled by default” – what does it affect? I think this can be enabled by editing the file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00recommends
Thanks in advance and greetings from Russia
Edit by Clem: “recommended” packages are not installed by default when you perform an install. Regarding the priorities, I’ll have a look, thanks for your feedback. Kernel updates are now taken care of by “linux-kernel-generic” after the problems we experienced in Mint 15, this allows us to point to the kernel we want, irrelevant to the kernel Ubuntu recommends, and to specify kernel updates as level 3 rather than level 5 when an update is recommended by us.
I posted this on the Mint forums but was directed here. I think a lot of issues are caused by outdated applets, desklets and themes etc. –
I recently installed Mint 16 Cinnamon, and have to say it’s a fantastic release. I don’t think Mint has ever felt as complete and polished as this. Well done everyone involved.
But!
I have to bring to the developers attention, if you haven’t spotted this problem already, of some older themes, applets and desklets that are not compatible with the newer version of the desktop, and are going to cause no small amount of consternation among users and potential users. I fired up Cinnamon Settings after a fresh install and decided to try out a number of my favourite desktop toys, but many of them cause crashes and hangs when attempting to use them because they haven’t been updated alongside the new desktop. ClockTow for example, froze my desktop entirely. Is there a way to ensure that the user can only download certified 2.0 applets and desklets etc, to avoid any problems? I personally don’t feel these extensions and suchlike should be available and visible to the end user if they can cause problems.
Thanks for reading!
hi together,
I am greeting you from LinuxMint 16 and I experienced no bugs so far. But what I would like to know is one thing:
is ist possible to encrypt the system after having done the basic installation as well as the first system-update and system-upgrade via Terminal?? And how do I do that??
@ Condorman,
what referrs to the Cinnamon-themes: yes, a lot for themes have to be updated for the new version of Cinnamon. But this is the artworkers Job like me. I have to update my Minty-theme for Cinnamon as soon as I find time to do so. I am already planning for a new version…
But the applets work fine for me so far. No problems so far here.
Greetings
Mintkatze
Hi together,
thank you very much for the new release! It looks amazing, so far.
I couldn’t recognize bugs so far but only one: When I press Super_L (Windows key) to open the mint-menu, the menu opens, but the overview of workspaces (which should actually open via Ctrl+Alt+Up and does this, too) opens, too. So it is not possible to enter something into the menus search field. I already checked thed the shortcut for the workspace overview in the cinnamon settings, but there is only Ctrl+Alt+Up written.
Any ideas?
Regards and rock on!
Daniel
Hi again together,
does anybody know, when there will be the new release of the faenza-ppa by tiheum??? The last release is only for Ubuntu 13.10. Does anybody know??
Or if anybody here has contact to tiheum, then could he or she perhaps notify him, that his nice ppa-repository needs update to Ubuntu 13.10 please?? I am already looking out for it.
Greetings
Mintkatze
Two major problems found so far:
— As already mentioned, installing nemo-dropbox results in it downloading the dropbox daemon, then hitting 100% cpu and doing nothing.
— Skype doesn’t seem to be using pulseaudio, and attempting to make a call at the same time as having Cinnamon sound settings open results in “failed to establish an audio connection” or a Skype crash. I’m not getting this problem in Ubuntu 13.10 Gnome remix, where it’s possible to select pulseaudio in skype settings.
Other than that it’s working brilliantly, really impressed with this update!
Edit by Clem: install libasound2-plugins, let me know if that solves the problem with skype.
Linux Mint 16 Petra RC version works ¨super¨ on my 64 bits AMD systems.
The only problem I encoutered was with the installation of a Brother printer. It seemed not possible to enter and use the Cups localhost site. But adding a root password with: sudo passwd root, did the trick to open the Cups menu and install the Brother Laserprinter. This simple problem was not easy to find.
Thank you for this excellant piece of software.
Regards,
Bram
Hi, very chic release, thanx!
Unfortunately, all the trouble with sound is back!
My USB speakers (LaCie) only worked OK with Mint 14.
With all other Linux releases I’m having huge problems:
sometimes all is good, but sometimes for no reason the sound is heavily – and I mean heavily – distorted.
Sometimes (atm) only left chanel works – if I restart computer, maybe all will work OK again.
It might be upstream issue (even core issue) – I am having the same problems with latest Ubuntu. In the past I tried various distros (Fedora, SuSe etc. + Ubuntu and Mint) – same problems everywhere.
I’m not buying new speakers, so I guess this might be goodbye from Linux for me, unfortunately.
Another minor thing I have noticed.
The spacing in the Nemo side bar between the folders such as Downloads, Documents etc seems to be a bit small. In Mint 15 the spacing was a little bit larger and looks better in my opinion. Again, not sure if this spacing was intentionally reduced but thought I would mention it anyway.
@RavetcoFX Thanks for the heads up. I agree the terminal looks cleaner without menu bar.
“Edit by Clem: install libasound2-plugins, let me know if that solves the problem with skype.”
Blimey, many thanks for the speedy reply!
It turns out libasound2-plugins was already installed. I tried purging Skype and reinstalling libasound2-plugins, then reinstalling Skype to no avail also – still no PulseAudio as an option in Skype sound settings
There are a few issues with the translations (Danish, which is 100% translated):
– In System Settings “Date & Time” is in English – In “Date & Time” the months are in English as well
– If I go to Menu/Administration there is a “program” called “Logind-skærm”. However, if I go to System Settings the same “program” is called “Login-skærm”. I can only find one translation of “Login Screen” in Cinnamon in Launchpad and that is “Login-skærm”, so where does this “Logind-skærm” come from? Also, the tab names are in English.
My 32 bit install problems were also solved by removing the 700 pinning for ppa.launchpad.net. It seems pinning the xorg-edgers ppa breaks alot of things. I am now able to install wine on the 64 bit version of mint 16 cinnamon.
I have tried Linuxmint-16 and have to say that it is really good. But the mistake I found glaring is that there is no calender provided and there is no option to sync with google calender. There was no option even in thunder bird even after downloading add on. Ultimately I had download Evolution and with in seconds I could sync google calender in no time and my schedules and appointments were there in no time. Hence it would be better if this error was also rectified in future
1-Copying regional personal settings to system settings does not work…
When launch from terminal I get the following error:
(cinnamon-settings.py:4596): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: g_dbus_proxy_call_internal: assertion ‘G_IS_DBUS_PROXY (proxy)’ failed
2-Swiss french keyboard is not available in MDM (It is probably a direct consequence of #1)
How to make windows transparent when I move them on Cinnamon like on KDE!
Docky does not recognize bookmarks in Nemo and will not put the ‘bookmarks’ on the dock (Docky).
Problem with bookmarks solved. I created a .gtk-bookmarks file in /home and bookmarks now show up in Docky.
Unable to install google earth do to no ia32-libs
Clem,
Can I congratulate you and your team.
This operating system, both looks amazing, you want to use it,and behaves amazingly in terms of responsiveness – opening and closing applications, mouse clicks etc.
What stood out for me was – HDMI support first off. Usually, I would have to install Nvidia drivers, blacklist nouveau etc, and then go into terminal and typing “sudo aplay -l” to find out which device/card to pick. It could be hours work. Not with this release – the default worked. Also, an attraction with installing Nvidia was the colour was much stronger, but with this installation, the default gave me a desktop as strong/deep in colour as Nvidia ever did.
VlC was already installed, I certainly welcome that, thank you! I did have to install Chrome though, as I have my bookmarks sync’d across Chrome on my different computers – I love that feature!
But, I am noticing that if I leave me PC, for say 10 minutes, and come back, the keyboard is not responsive! Everything just hangs. After 20 minutes, it goes to a black screen, where it asks me to login. Not sure if that is of any help, but anyway, here are the details of my system

Getting “The package x could not be installed” “check internet connection” when installing packages. Packages ARE successfully installed, however.
hi Clem,
I also received a bug in the meantime. I noticed, that the installation of alternative Cinnamon-Menues cause Cinnamon to crash and then only the unchecking of these alternative Menues and the reset to Standard for the Cinnamon-panel resolves the issue.
Then the Alt + F2 + r -command does not work at the moment for restarting Cinnamon.
This needs to be resolved.
Hi Clem, this is rather a question than a bug report:
Do you intend to implement a normal file filtering option in Nemo, like it is present in Dolphin?
I mean hiding those files, who are no match by regex criteria. That would greatly improve Nemo as file browser.
Been looking forward to this. i have an issue though.
nouveau crashes during install bootup. had the same issue with ubuntu 13.10. tried booting in compatibilty mode and installer worked but when i bootup the system i get the black screen with a bunch of nouveau stuff. i have the Nvidia Geforce 750m card along with the integraded intel video card.
The side panel (for thumbnails, index, etc.) in the version of evince included in petra is very large and cannot be resized below 15cm on my computer screen.
I am a newbie to Linux and I love Linux Mint 15, so when I saw Mint 16 I downloaded it immediately. The problem I have is that Netflix will not load in Mint 16. I am using Cinnamon by the way. It works great in Mint 15, but when I try to open it in Mint 16, it doesn’t do anything. It doesn’t give me an error message, it doesn’t open, nothing. It appears that Gecko isn’t installed and when I try to install it manually by following suggestions from the Ubuntu forums, it doesn’t work. I really want to use Mint 16, but I guess I will have to wait for the final release. Mint 16 looks great, though! I can’t wait to use it. For now, I will go back to Mint 15.
Hello,
Good job with Linux Mint 16.
Installation were easier for my laptop than it was with Linux Mint 15. You don’t need terminal to get WiFi and Sounds working anymore. Driver manager handles WiFi (Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n) and sounds are working out of box. Good job!
Only thing what doesn’t work anymore are Nvidia drivers. It isn’t big issue for me because i don’t need anything graphic intensive so i can live with Intel Graphics.
Keep up good job! Donation incoming.
I entered the password but the screen saver still active after my system suspend and wake up.
Sorry for bad English.
64 bit in a VM – no issues so far. Smooth and fast.
32 bit as a new repartition dual-boot along XP on a 9yr old Dell desktop.. I suspect some hardware faults as there are issues with this machine in XP. The menu and bottom panel vanish every other boot and I had the background revert once – but its an RC, so I am not concerned.
Now that we have Cinnamon 2.0, there still isn’t a place to customize the menu tesselations. Instructions from the young genius who made this happen work, but vanish with the next updates. Nothing under System Settings / Preferences. I would like to see that improved please.
WHOA! This version seems to have waaay more bugs than any other before even for RC, which could be understandable considering the backend transition you’ve done.
I may wait for a sort of 16.0.1 if i see you rush it to release.
Good luck with bug fixing!
I have to insist on my older comment (#18). I’m running the latest Cinnamon nightly build (from PPA) and “Regional Settings” still behaving the same way:
1- System settings / Regional settings / Language = Unable to add/remove any languages. Shown plenty of languages I don’t use and can’t remove them…??
2- System settings / Regional settings / Formats = Unable to add/remove region formats. Only shows Australia, Canada and UK, can’t add US or any other.
3- System settings / Regional settings / System = Cannot change anything…???
Hope this gets fixed for release!
When I play a flash video, whether it is in Chrome or Firefox, the video always freezes after a few seconds. If I drag the bar forward, it will play again but only for a few seconds and then freeze. This did not happen on MATE, just Cinnamon. Using the 64 bit version.
Update about my previous postings: I was able to make the desklet “Network usage monitor” (netusage@30yavash.com) and the applet “Network speed monitor” (netspeed@adec) working installing the packets “vnstat”, “vnstati” and “gir1.2-gtop-2.0”. This was not so easy to discover because I didn’t get any notification about the need of these packets. Suggestion: make an automatic installation of the required packets for applets and desklets.
BUG: see this screenshot, there is something wrong in the bottom panel (see red arrow):
https://www.dropbox.com/s/0tgooahobggsor4/Schermata%20del%202013-11-17%2022%3A19%3A03.png
My overall opinion after one day of testing: you have done a good work in improving the speed of the operation system, but… this distro is not yet ready for distribution, IMHO.
BUG: I installed “nemo-dropbox” by Synaptic, then I started the download of the proprietary daemon… but it stops at 100% with an high cpu load… 🙁 🙁 🙁
I found a critical bug in Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon.
It is not possible to shutdown after a session log-off and log-in.
How to reproduce:
1. start Mint 16 Cinnamon 64 bit in VirtualBox
2. log-off from the session
3. log-in again
4. try to shutdown; it is not possible unless you wait for 60 sec.
See screenshot at: http://owncloud.rum3ber.ch/public.php?service=files&t=c19f52691fc1e0587f3e0328114488b7
Other comments (not bugs but requirements):
1. System update icon in the panel does not follow the Mint design guideline (monochrome)
2. Panel cannot be positioned verticaly; users have to use 3. party docks (e.g. docky) if they want a space saving panel on a wide screen.
I am struggling with UEFI notebook as others here do. There is a remark up there which sais:
> Edit by Clem: We noticed installing in EFI mode in the exact same
> conditions worked the first time and failed the second time. We
> assumed it was because grub was already there. We’ll test 13.10 to
> see if it behaves the same way.
I actually may have this problem. I have installed LM several times, because first time st went wrong and now everytime I install it is succesfull, but system loads into Win8 … or if I install non automatically I get “grub-install dummy failed error”. How do I get rid of the grub so it installs EFI properly?
Cinnamon 2.0 looks fantastic, I can’t wait to see it.
Hey guys, I really like the new Linux Mint 16. 🙂
I discovered some problems:
-Problems with gnome15.org drivers. (Application does not start after installation – worked with Mint 15 (regressions?))
– It also does sometimes not regognize my G35 headset.
– Login window does not have focus on startup (You have to click into the window before you can type the password in)
– I can not find any option for editing the shell (like colors, fonts, background…)
But besides of that, this release is already a really nice distribution.
Please add the packet “gnome-system-tools” in a fresh installation, because it contains a lot of useful utilities, required for example to configure users and groups (the default utility with Linux Mint 16 “cinnamon-settings-users” is useless, because with it you cannot add an user to a group).
Edit by Clem: You can.
Linux Mint 16 RC , Cinnamon 64 Bit.
Toshiba Satellite L775 previously running LM 15 Cinnamon 64 Bit, with no major issues.
Attepted to install LM 16 RC Cinnamon 64 bit onto new Hard Drive.
Tried Manual partitioning to establish seperate /home.
Installer crashed.
Attempted again, automatic option to Erase and use Entire Disk.
Installer crashed.
Both times it crashed at the username and password setup screen.
I have rebooted, and tried different partitioning options, same results.
Checked the md5sum for the iso. OK.
Downloaded LM16 Mate 64 bt RC.
Checked md5sum. OK.
Burned, booted, and ran install.
All is well so far with the Mate version.
After install of LM16 Mate RC, Ran MintUpdate.
Then in Synaptic, Installed Cinnamon via mint-meta-cinnamon
Logged out and attempted to log into Cinnamon Session.
Failed.
Attempted Cinnamon 2D, failed.
Ran apt-get install mint-meta-cinnamon again.
A few packages came up to install, I let them install, logged out,
and was able to log into cinnamon session.
Started up the next morning. MDM Login successful.
Cinnamon does not start.
Black screen with Icons.
No background, no panel.
Right clicked on “Desktop” , selected Open In Terminal.
can start cinnamon by running ‘cinnamon’.
Some errors in terminal referring to NetworkManager not running.
cinnamon –replace

BUG: MDM always uses English locale
I did an install with German set as language, however MDM does not accept my password except I switch certain letters around. Also changing the locale directly on the MDM login screen doesn’t change that. I did find no other option to change the locale MDM uses (not in mdmsetup nor in the config files)
Besides that it is very nice realease, thanks!
Wine does not install. It says the main package is broken. Tried all versions except 1.4 and its the same. Otherwise seems to work good.
@Kyowoo (171 and 175) – ia32 libraries have been obsoleted and have been replaced by the “libc6:i386” package I believe. The problem isn’t with Mint or Ubuntu repositories but with the Google Earth package. You can fix this by following this procedure:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/366438/how-to-install-google-earth-64bit-in-ubuntu-13-10-ia32-libs-dependency-error
Worked fine for me.
Wow. This is amazing.
The menu is a lot snappier than it used to be, now it opens instantly. And the software manager is now not only usable, but fast!
Although I did have a few strange problems that seamed to fix themselves after a full restart.
I also ran into trouble trying to play a DVD. It would start to play, and on some DVDs it would just stop, and on some I got this error in VLC:
Playback failure:
DVDRead could not open the disc “/dev/dvd”.
Your input can’t be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL ‘dvd:///dev/dvd’. Check the log for details.
I couldn’t get it to work at all in Totem.
Update on previous error.
When black screen and icons appear after login, right click and selected open terminal here.
ran pgrep cinnamon, showed 3 processes running.
kill first process, logs me out, and back to mdm login.
I believe it’s the best distro i ever used.
But:
1. System freeze on running update manager and changing wallpaper
2. Can’t install many themes from system settings.
3. Battery low notification doesn’t working.
Tested on a new samsung laptop, i5, 4GB..
Many thanks for your work!
Continuing my feedback from #150.
Found two bugs, not annoying, but still are bugs.
1) Time cannot be changed from12 hour mode to 24 hour mode,
2) Regional Settings, cannot change to my format from the system format. Only the format, but not the Display language and the Input source, these work well.
Other than these, everything works quite well.
Regards!
Running great so far! Thank you for another fantastic release!
Hi. I don’t know if this is a bug or not, but regardless of which color profile I use on my printer (hp deskjet 4200 series), my printer prints very lightly (barely seen). Works fine on another operating system. Other than that, I had one lockup just after doing nothing for a while (no screensaver).
That’s about it, thank you for your time and effort–looks to be a great release.
Deja-dup — I use it so that I can easily switch between ubuntu and Linuxmint with my data. Usually I can restore a backup that was made from an old install to a fresh install, no problem. With LM16 I had trouble even getting deja-dup gui to show up in the menus anywhere. After I finally got it to work, I found that it will not restore my backup that I made on a different install. Had to use CLI duplicity and move stuff to the correct directories afterwards.
I cannot mount my iPad. When I try, LM says that it is locked even though it isn’t. On the iPad, when I click OK to connect to the computer, it just opens a new Window in LM saying that it is locked. I can connect the iPad in Windows, so there doesn’t seem to be a problem in the Ipad end. The problem is the same in LM 15.
Edit by Clem: It looks like it’s upstream and caused by the latest iOS changes.. the best I can do is remove the fact that we improved iOS support in the release notes.
Quick question about wireless support for MacBooks and MacBook Pros. I have a 2011 MBP for which there is 100% support in the repos, but it’s not loaded on the LiveDVD image. This is a major inconvenience and one which really doesn’t make any sense to me, since all the Broadcom support you folks need to fix this you already have available. What’s the deal with this?
I can’t fully set up the basic configuration of my laptop unless I want to find someone’s router to physically plug into. Yet at the same time when I work with other people, it feels as though every other oddball, obscure piece of 802.11x hardware is supported.
Here is one more problem, not a big one, but somewhat annoying.
When you install Shotwell, it goes to /usr/bin, but not to /usr/share/applications, so it won’t be shown in the menu, but if you install Fotoxx, it goes to /usr/share/applications, so will be shown in the menu.
Shotwell goes to /usr/share/menu, but that doesn’t get it immediately shown or shown at all in the menu, without manual intervention.
Network proxy: setting network proxy preference does apply to firefox (with “use system proxy” enabled) but does not apply to synaptic: if you let “direct connection to the internet” you have no proxy; so you have to define manualy again.
This system proxy tool is nice for poeple like me with a laptop switching back and forth from work to home. Will this feature be also available on Mint XFCE ?
Hi,
i cant access the settings for Network, every time i click on it, its appears shortly and crashes…
Edit by Clem: Can you type “cinnamon-settings network” in the terminal and paste the output?
@Dani at #200
Try this to install wine:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine1.6
It working great for me, I not try another version but in this way work cool.
NEMO-DROPBOX PROBLEM
Found a solution to the ‘dropbox hangs at 100% with high CPU usage” problem here:

@Ralf Hersel at #193
I check your problem and in a normal installation when I log in again, I get the Cinnamon recovery mode but just one time and never more, may be because I log out without close the browser and movie player.
When I reproduce it again nothing happend…
@brandon at #189
That was the first that I do using chrome and chromium and with both is working fine. The last nigth I see a movie and I haven’t any problem. May be is a local issue.
Have a nive day all 🙂
Hi, its me again and Im sorry for so many spam, I have an issue with totem.
When i play a DVD movie it crash, in Mint 15 I have the same problem.
When the movie will start, totem drop an error saying “error internal data flow”. VLC is working fine for me.

Mint 15 + Cinnamon 1.8 or 2.0, and now Mint 16/Cinnamon fails to resume properly from suspend on AMD-64/NVidia(with driver 319).
Two alternate scenarios.
1. After resume the icons in the panels are pixelized, but cinnamon is running. Restart Cinnamon and the icons are redrawn OK.
2. Cinnamon starts in Fallback mode, restart requested and required.
This sort of problem doesn’t exist with Groan 3 or DisUnity on Ubuntu 13:04/10, so I assume it’s a cinnamon thing. Needs fixing as my clients really hate it, and I’ll have to move them to something else if it isn’t fixed.
TOF.
Edit by Clem: I noticed that in alt-tab, pixelated icons after a resume. I thought it was an issue in Gio, but it’s possible it comes from our own Cinnamon C layer (cinnamon-app/app-info). I’ll be brutally honest though, this is surfacing quite late, we’ve no lead on it right now and the stable release is coming fast. Regarding the non-accelerated session after resume, apply our latest systemd and mdm updates. They fix significant bugs which could relate to that. You can also switch to LightDM and DEs such as MATE/KDE/Xfce if this isn’t fixed and a showstopper for your customers.
Hello everyone.
I installed Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon but the computer will not start. I fail to see the MDM. It freezes.
AMD FX 6300
Crucial M4 128GB SSD
AMD HD6850
They are several situations:
– Error message loop: perf samples too long; lowering kernel …
– Another error message that comes out sometimes is: Stopping startpar bridge for notification of upstart job start/stop
– 1% of the time everything goes well …
PS: I have no screenshots, I saw these error messages by disabling plymouth.
Sorry for the English, not my native language.
@Sergio (#18 and 188) – I can confirm these “Regional Settings” bugs. Checking the “Roadmap” (see link near the beginning of the above article–it’s in the second section from the bottom of the “roadmap” page), I see that Regional Settings is planned to be rewritten from scratch for Cinnamon 2.2 due to it being “completely broken/useless/unintuitive”. Hopefully, we’ll see it patched enough to work for LM 16.
Every time I tried to boot I would get the “Busy Box”. I solved the problem by disconcerting all my hard drives except my primary drive were I wanted my OS on and it worked !!!! It runs great and no issues on a i7 with a msi P67A-GD65 motherboard. I think my sound even improved a little??? Thanks Linux Mint team.
Hello!
Thanks for the new RC to the Mint team!
I’ve been using the RC for a short while and have so far encountered two things:
1) Resizing windows seems a bit slow. When clicking&dragging a window border, the window will remain for a second or so in its old size, before it will resize.
2) Installing amd64-microcode package will uninstall linux-kernel-image and one other kernel-related package? Should that happen?
Will keep on testing a bit in the next days.
Best,
Pat
Edit by Clem: linux-kernel-generic is the Mint metapackage which points to the recommended kernel. You can remove it safely. You won’t get updates if we point to a newer one though, but you’ll be able to install newer kernels yourself from the repository.
BUGs: 1-Cinnamon occasionally freezes
2- Cinnamon failed to load after installing ATI RADEON drivers and even after purging them which is not the case on any previous release
Serious BUG:
Cinnamon goes into software rendering when I logout and and then Log back in on many PCs (HP, Dell and Toshiba)
Edit by Clem: Fixed in mdm 1.4.7
I went through heck in a handbasket trying to install the binary Nvidia drivers after finishing the install of the RC. I ended up using the xorg-edgers PPA and installing the nvidia-331 package to get the latest release.
After leaving my machine sitting overnight with a logged on session I came back to find that Cinnamon had crashed. It restarted without an issue but I wonder if there is some problem with using the latest Nvidia drivers rather than 319 from the repos.
Is the process for installing the latest Nvidia drivers through the binary installer or PPA documented/supported?
Otherwise — fantastic release! This has been my distro of choice for 2 years now and I don’t think I’ll ever look back.
Edit by Clem: well… we fixed mintdrivers (didn’t install settings tools), systemd (which froze cinnamon), mdm (which started it without acceleration and/or froze it as well) and we no longer give PPA priority 700.. which creates a lot of issues when using xorg-edgers. In other words, you’re very unlikely to get through the same problems with the stable release, but I would recommend a fresh install when it’s out, especially if you applied updates from xorg-edgers. We’ll explain that in detail in the stable release notes.
When I use Kid3, I used (using Mint 15 Cinnamon) to be able to drag and drop album artwork. This doesn’t seem to work in Mint 16
Localization issues. Lack of other translations, except English, for Gimp perpetuates from last version. Please include and update more often repositories for Gimp translations, and localisations, and please check also more carefully and often this problem for the rest of programs an applications from Linux Mint repositories. It is very annoying to manually add localizations repositories after a clean install, when you open for the first time a program and interface is not in your native or preffered language. There are only few programs and applications with interfaces localised only in one or two languages, majority are translated for all EU languages and oriental languages. You only need to be a little carefull, and add the proper repositories for translations, in final releases, and update them regularly.
Thank you.
Best regards, for Linux Mint team. It is one of the best Linux distributions, constantly in first places, more often on the first place in users preference.
Edit by Clem: I agree and I take l10n very seriously but I need more info here. Which locale, which application, which string.. etc.
re bug #222 – cinnamon goes into software rendering. I have had this bug, but I cannot reproduce it once I installed the propitiatory NVIDIA drivers
@Kirk M (#220), thank you, just checked!
@Clem, please do a RC2 release before final, just to be sure every (most) bugs are ironed out. This RC is more like a Beta than RC.
Looking great! I’ve had two crashes so far. The first time I was unzipping a large encrypted file while browsing on Google Chrome. The second time, I was rearranging applets on the panel in panel edit mode. When I turned off panel edit mode, some of the applets were blank in appearance, but still functional. I tried to remedy this by restarting Cinnamon with alt+F2 then “r.” My Cinnamon session would not restart properly and I have this screenshot to show you:
http://jp23.net/public/0tlink/Screenshot%20from%202013-11-18%2012:39:48.png
AMD/ATI VGA Drivers Problem / AMD Catalyst Control Centre not showed after installing any propertially drivers (HD 7870) through driver manager – Fix: Have to install manually latest beta catalyst drivers right after the installation of Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon RC 64Bit to make it work.
Freeze problem with password authentication actions is fixed after installing manually the AMD VGA Catalyst drivers properly.
Only problem I have now is that I can install Teamviewer which was possible on Linux Mint 15.
* Can’t install any Teamviewer package.
Alpha? Beta? RC? RC2? What difference does it make what it’s called? Clem’s work load doesn’t change either way. We tend to assign far to much value to “hi-tech” words like these when it just doesn’t matter.
Kind of like this: Thermostat says it’s 70 degrees, but one guy says it’s hot, one guy says it’s cold. But it still 70 degrees.
If you don’t like the bugs that have been released in this particular “RC” wait for the stable and then update. It is also key to remember that Cinnamon itself is under heavy, heavy, development — Clem may even consider it to be BETA on paper, not sure. It has a long long way to go.
Interestingly enough, there is another PB on the post. I’m the grouchy one who posted 229 and who cringes when the same old complaints are posted.
Hm, seems my comment didn’t get published…
In case it’s just due to it not being moderated yet, please ignore.
Anyway:
Resizing windows by draging the window border sometimes makes the window “hang” for ~1s before the resize action takes place.
My system: Phenom2 X4 965, GTX460 (I ‘ using proprietary drivers).
Overall, good work! System has been working smoothly in the few hours I’ve tested it, with the exception of the resize issue.
First of all thanks a lot to the dev team. Just one question at this point: is the rtl8192cu/s driver integrated in linux mint 16? I use
a TP Link TL-WN822N wlan usb adapter which in my current Mint 15 does not work properly with the standard rtl8192cu kernel driver loaded (wlan device is recognized but no connection is made to the access point). However, there is a patch available that works very well for Mint 15 (http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/wlan-stick-524440/3/#post-5573257, praseodym’s contribution dated May 23rd, 2013, sorry it is in German).
Overall release looks great and representative of awsome build work done by Clem and team.
Below are the only issues I have encountered thus far:
1) When running from ISO or PenDrive – if you select Menu > Quit > Shutdown – the screen seems to hang (no mouse pointer)- you have to press enter to finish shutting down (presumably a hidden prompt to remove disk/drive), but nothing visible prompts you to do so.
2) As mentioned by others, the regional settings > formats screen only shows Australia, Canada, and United Kingdom (no United States), and no obvious way to add additional options.
3) When running in VirtualBox welcome screen shows up blank and stops responding on first load (this worked fine on my Latitude E6500, so likely a driver issue)
I’ll report more if I find them.
Another small bug:
Turning on the panel edit mode and trying to move the update manager icon, turned it into a gray rectangle.
Actually that bug might have been present in Mint 15 as well.
I have my home directory sourced from a server running Ubuntu 12.04LTS via a NFS v4 share.
In my Mint 16 RC machine, I have the following line in /etc/fstab:
serv2.local:/home /home nfs4 auto 0 0
(where serv2.local is the exporting host)
This has always worked fine on my previous installs of Mint, however using Mint 16RC, this home directory can be slow to mount (I have had this problem on two machines), such that the home directory has not mounted by the time the user logs in. It doesn’t always happen by a long way, maybe one time in five.
As an aside, I wish I had the skills to build something like this!
Re Bug #223.
Please ignore this post. The fault was a batch of duff mp3 files and nothing to do with Mint
(sorry for time wasting)
Re Bug #107 – cannot log in as a different user, just installed the latest updates and this seems to have solved the problem.
Top job
@ 181 El Gigantor,
your problem can be solved by selecting “nomodeset” at the installation. Then the Installer runs through.
Then select again “nomodeset” for the first boot, install your nvidia-driver and then reboot your machine again. At the drivers selection, you should better select nvidia-current-updates rather than noveau.
This should solve up your problem.
Nouveau can turn your machine way to hot and kill your graphics-card.
Greetings
Mintkatze
@ 189 brandon,
I can confirm your bug here. This is browser-independent, because this also happens with webbrowser (as epiphany-browser is called now) and as well as in Midori or in Firefox or other browsers.
This really needs to be fixed!
Greetings

Open GIMP, open a dropdown menu, e.g. the ‘Edit’ menu. Press the Print Screen button on the keyboard – no screenshot is taken while a menu is open.
This is not a 2.0 regression but it’s in 2.0 as well. GTK problem?
Had to create a screenshot of some new menu options in GIMP 2.9 and couldn’t, had to use Windows (and post that, to a Linux forum no less 🙂
@ all people here who have problems with EFI-installation:
I cannot confirm this here on my Notebook Toshiba Satellite C850-1LQ. Here EFI-boot ran fine. Then after installation, it is necessary to run the first update and dist-upgrade by Terminal.
Then you get a new version of EFI-bootmanager and some more packages will be installed to stabilize the system. This might sort out some of your problems.
I could boot into LinuxMint 16 after installation (but: in difference to you all, I do not have a Windows-Installation anymore on my machine. I wiped it before installing LinuxMint 15 because I do not need Windows anymore).
Greetings
Mintkatze
Discovered issue with Teamveiwer.
Had to use 32 bit version due to package dependency issues with 64 bit.
When in a remote session on a Windows remote PC, keystrokes were intermittently not sent, as well as backspace failed to function.
I found a issue, not with Linux Mint itself but with Google Chrome. If I change Chrome to fullscreen and I want to change it back the won’t let me do that, it stays fullscreen. Could be a video driver problem, but I didn’t had this problem with Unity.
Edit by Clem: Fixed in muffin today
@ #228 PirateGRC – I had to use the 32 bit deb file from teamveiwer site, but note my previous post. It had issues.
@ Clem, sorry for all this, looking forward to another great release, and I do appreciate you and your teams hard work. Mint is and has been the top dog in the distro pile in MHO.
Even after setting org.cinnamon.desktop.lockdown.disable-lock-screen to true, the lock button still appears on cinnamon menu applet…
Thank you,
Ruben
If using ‘gnome-control-center region’, ‘English (United States)’ is available in formats; if using ‘cinnamon-settings region’, ‘United States’ is not available in formats.
More info:
– ‘localectl’ equals ‘en_US.utf8’
– ‘localectl list-locales’ contains ‘en_US.utf8’
– ‘locale-gen –purge’ generates ‘en_US.utf8’

re: “Can’t install any Teamviewer package.”
Please use the Teamiewer 8 32 bit/Multiarch link at the Teamviewer website.
I just successfully installed it on my Mint 16 Cinnamon (64 bit) desktop.
I reported @ 58 (as plain PB, but there are now two of us 🙂 that there’s an apparent bug when logging out then back in as another user, where the system hangs. I neglected to say I’m using Cinnamon 64 bit, sorry. I note that Kirk M @97 and Nick@ 107 reported similar. Nick @ 235 reports the latest updates seems to have fixed this for him, thought I’d better mention that they haven’t as yet for me and note that this bug hasn’t yet been confirmed on the Github roadmap. As mentioned, I’m otherwise enjoying the RC, many thanks to the LM team for all your hard work.

Bug: no sound at all on skype on cinnamon 64bit and ugly sound on cinnamon 32
In the system settings in keyboard I have set key for Lock Screen to be Win(super) button plus L just like in Windows however it doesn’t work and it just show up a mini search thing.
Suggestion: PLzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz add more sound events like “empty trash”; “logout” “back”….
Bug: Windows close when I click on any button!!
BUG: nemo ” create bootable USB ” option not working and occasionally not appearing on right click!
When logging out from either the cinnamon menu or the applet you are sent to tty1 rather than the MDM login screen. Switching user does go to the MDM login screen.
@ Leo tried the ppa as suggested and still no wine…

Bug: “mapping windows” + “changing the soud volume” sound events occasionally fail to load
The only bug I found was trying to install Linrunner. Soon as I did, the temperature started to go above 70(C). Removed it and the system temp returned to normal-50-55(C).
Skype makes a constant buzzing noise as soon as it tries to play a sound. I tried installing libasound2-plugins as suggested in comment #159, but it was already installed and current.
I was able to get the DVD playback to work in VLC. But I had to open /dev/sr0 instead of the default /dev/dvd.
Add my name to list of people with UEFI “grub-install dummy failed error” problems.
I have a Lenovo V570 Laptop that doesn’t give me the option to turn off EFI in the BIOS. (running latest BIOS vers).
Due to these issues, I couldn’t install Linux Mint 15 either… Can we simply have an installer choice for EFI or Legacy BIOS installations?
Everywhere you look, you see Linux users having to re-install grub from a CD even when they do successfully run the installers.
Forcing the installer to assume EFI, is NOT helping anyone.
In Firefox, when clicking “Open Containing Folder” in the context of the Downloads menu, the program Disk Usage Analyzer opens.
Bug report:
I’m thinking this is a bug with the proprietary Nvidia driver? I have 64-bit Mint 16 loaded up into VirtualBox, and upon booting to the Mint 16 desktop it’s got a little error box that says:
“Running in software rendering mode. Cinnamon is currently running without video hardware acceleration and, as a result you may observe much higher than normal CPU usage. There could be a problem with your drivers or some other issue. For the best experience, it is recommended that you only use this mode for troubleshooting purposes.”
So I opened the Driver Manager and told it not to use the proprietary driver (the only other available option) and clicked on Apply Changes. The error message remained on my screen, so I clicked it to make it go away. Nothing seemed to otherwise change, so I went back into the Driver Manager to check what it might be saying now and see if it was working. It now says “this device is not working” and gives me 3 options, but the only one that isn’t greyed out says: “Continue using a manually installed driver”. But when clicked on nothing happens and the Apply Changes button remains greyed out, so I can’t actually apply or modify/change anything.
My thoughts: possibly I’m still a n00b and I’m missing something. Or it’s a bug in the proprietary Nvidia driver’s recognition and use. And as for the Driver Manager not allowing me to make any more changes (or revert back), this may also be an additional bug (or I’m a n00b)?
System info: home-built desktop running an Nvidia GTX770, Intel i7 3770k, MSI Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt motherboard, 16GB ram.
Hopefully all this info is useful or relevant to the debugging crew somehow. 🙂 I’m really excited to install the finished product in a few weeks!
@ Fuzzy Penguin:
I got the same box with message about Cinnamon being run in software rendering mode. After installing proprietary or non-free nvidia driver, then blacklisting nouveau for my Ge6600 video card, this error disappears.
Have waited a while to try Mint/Cinnamon and this release is rockin’ so far! 😀
* Tooltips momentarily appear in the upper-left corner of the screen before display in their proper position
* During installation, I disabled the swap on a disk not related to the installation, and was warned about changes to the size of the partition being effective immediately, even though I did not change any partition sizes. Then the installation was paused while the partitioner did something, then after a while, I was able to continue.
I will report more as I come across them.
Thanks, cheers and God bless! 🙂
Oh, I should add that I was using both nouveau and proprietary nvidia drivers (319). I also have three disks, two with root partition, home and swap, and the third with a zfs PC-BSD installation. The disk I chose to install Mint 16RC on is a 500 GB SATA drive.

Otherwise a fantastic relase for me
Update to previous post:
I rebooted, and on the log on screen I noticed an option to log in to a session of “Cinnamon” and one that said “Cinnamon Software rendering mode”
This time I selected the first one and now the notification is gone
However, glxgears is still very low, only ~300 frames, so I run the command again and get a slightly different error:

Richard – You already have an explanation about this situation. Nothing terrible happens. Security on Linux Mint is as it always has been.
For the people that have trouble with sound in Skype, you could check if starting it like that from the terminal works:
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 skype
In previous versions there was a bug with PulseAudio/Skype that caused issues. This line might help (you can vary the number a bit).
@rvaly: Had some problems there as well, since the (great) standalone version of “The Darkmod” (check it out people, it’s a cool fan remake/homage of the old Thief) depends on some content of the ia32 package.
I found a post on their forum from someone who has looked up the dependencies from an older version, so you can install the content by hand (see post #3):
http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/15289-ubuntu-1310-64-bit-and-32-bit-libs/
Installed Petra yesterday, installation was easy and smooth. Today I tried adding a new user Admin/Users and Groups clicked Add then filled out the pop up box, simple so far, then clicked Add, on pop up box, nothing happened, rebooted and tried again, same thing. So, am I doing something wrong or is there a bug? As a side issue I have also lost my “Computer” and “Home” icons from my desktop, although they are checked in System Settings/Desktop, I can add and remove the trash can…but removing and adding the “Computer” or “Home” icons do nothing.
Ok, a bit more info. Have managed to add a new user, but hey, the way it is done is crap. The pop up asks for Full Name: e.g. Frank Blogs, then User Name:(this is where it gets really weird) the username MUST be the users first name but all in lower case e.g. frank. It becomes more strange after you “Add” the new account, when you check the user it shows the “Username” as the “Group.”
Hi I use Linux Mint 15, how can I update it to 16 without loosing my Data?
I have found Mint 16 Petra Cinnamon to be quite unstable. I have attempted to upgrade from my Mint 14 Nadia Cinnamon OS on multiple occasions and each time it causes critical errors. The software installs but then I lose complete control of the computer. Screen icons suddenly disappear as do the menu bars. I am unable to left or right click anywhere on the screen in order to access my files or programs. Access via the common keyboard routes also yields no results. Instead I am left with no option but to power down my PC. I have now re-installed Mint 14 which is faultless.
Sorry for the bad news guys!
BUG: “open containing folder” on transmission-gtk doesn’t take me to the right directory and shows a chart about disk usage and all!
Bugs found so far:
– MDM: Just to confirm. This is probably the same as one reported before. Logging out and logging in again does not work. I get a black screen or Cinnamon starts in software rendering mode. 64Bit Mint Cinnamon, AMD processor, ATI Radeon X1300.
– Cinnamon menu: When creating a new menu item the icon does not appear. It is ok in the menu editor.
– Nemo: Can’t edit file names in place because a file name appears as a black box when trying to edit. This may be a problem with my graphics driver (ATI Radeon X1300 card), but it works fine in nautilus.
– Nemo does not render file preview icons automatically.
– Gedit forgets window size, starts always in small size.
– Terminal forgets to show menu when “Show Menubar” is selected and terminal is closed and opened again.
– Many windows react with a considerable delay when trying to resize them with the mouse for the first time. Examples: Terminal, System Settings, Nemo. Some programs are not affected. Examples: Gedit, Claws Mail, Firefox.
Petra doesn’t seem to be rock solid yet 😉
Edit by Clem: Hi, quick feedback on this, the resize issues (muffin) and mdm issue are fixed now.
Mint 16 Cinnamon 64bit, Take III….
I started over.
Installed 32 bit Petra Cinnamon, formatted / , used /home, but did not format. Had similar issues.
Created new user, logged in, no desktop/cinnamon issues. Renamed original user folder. Deleted original user profile. Re-created original profile. Rebooted.
Looged in as original profile. No desktop/cinnamon issues.
Deleted Petra RC 64 bit iso. Downloaded again. Burned.
Installed without any installer crashes. Formatted / , used /home, but did not format. So far, no more issues with Desktop / Cinnamon. There must have been an issue with my original profile files.
Thanks again for all your great work. I am a dedicated Mint user, and I do recommend it to as many folks as I can.
The install to cinnamon petra went good. Upon bootup found that my touchpad had tapping disabled.
-Tapping showed as being enabled in control panel. Ran dconf-editor and found that tap-to-click wasn’t checked, once I checked it I was able to tap again.
– The keyboard shortcut for “hide all normal windows” is broke. I can’t get any shortcut to work with it. The ubuntu website shows that there are issues going on with some keyboard shortcuts not working right.
Other than that everything is working perfectly.
Another time related bug…
Cant set login screen time to 24hr (changing the option doesnt work)
Mint 16 Cinnamon running 100% OK
DELL Inspiron Laptop – 4GB ram, i3 processor – HD 500
Hi!
Bug? In clock/applet cannot be set custom time format in coutries, which uses 24h clock format it is sad. Or is it feautere?
Hi,
I found few more things:
– Cinnamon is started in software rendering mode when first logged out. If I log out again and log in again, Cinnamon starts fine.
– shutdown confirmation dialog in software rendering mode doesn’t have Yes button (only Cancel)
– Chromium browser cannot exit from fullscreen mode when watching Youtube videos (only HTML5 player, Flash player works fine)
– MDM is showing parallel horizontal lines moving from top to bottom
– Keyboard settings allow adding duplicate key combination for Cinnamon “Toggle Scale” and “Toggle Expo” (found these, didn’t go through all actions, most of them ok)
– calendar applet doesn’t change date format for date shown when applet is opened (only panel date)
– Nemo Network shows Windows PCs in two places: in “root” of Network and also in Windows Network “subfolder” (maybe ok?)
And last thing, probably not Linux Mint related:
– laptop-mode-tools don’t load all neccessary modules when starting computer on battery power. After some investigation found that this probably happens because of /lib/udev/rules.d/99-laptop-mode.rules which cases to start tools before init script but only for USB device (usb-autosuspend). When start) method in init script is called, laptop-mode-tools are already started and in the same state as in the moment before when first started only for USB. This results in skipping of loading of other modules. Adding “force” to start) method in /etc/init.d/laptop-mode script solves thing.
Briefly, It happened these
1)
ibus-hangul doesn’t work on searchbox in the menu
It is unable to switch english to korean , korean to english
2)
ibus-hangul doesn’t work in the password input window on the pop up window of update manager
Thank you in advance.
Bug: Pidgin status icon disappeared sometime during the course of the day. The icon was gone but I could still right-click where it should have been and the Pidgin menu displayed. Restarting Pidgin brought the status icon back. I think I reported this problem with the last release, too.
Mint 16 RC Cinnamon – 64-bit
nvidia proprietary driver 319
One more issue…. VirtualBox 4.3 , virtual machine in full screen mode, can’t minimize. flashes off then right back to full screen…..
Small problem. Starting Linux Mint. First click on desktop is to open the volume settings. Clicking on 50% seems to crash Cinnamon every other time. Cinnamon is restarted and now I have a Panel at the top in light gray with Applications and Places menu.
Need BCM43227 driver in start pack Linux Mint. I haven’t cabel internet, but can’t install driver from deb. Every time get error. In Mint 15 everything was good
It looks good but I must admit to being disappointed that the gedit supplied is still 2.30.4 and thus unable to incorporate the plugins in the repository, which are version 3.8.3. Any news on this?
Edit by Clem: v 2.30 was chosen over 3.8. You can however upgrade to it if you want with the following command: apt install gedit=3.8.3-0ubuntu3 gedit-common=3.8.3-0ubuntu3
Great release!
Found only 1 issue so far: in maximized Chromium there’s a 1 pixel tall space that doesn’t allow to switch to tabs when moving the pointer to the very top of the screen.
This was never the case in previous versions.

I had a problem with editing directory names, but it seems to be alright now! The graphics chip is “Integrated Radeon® X300 based graphics”.
I’d like to ask you to make refresh rate choice available. My display is quite happy at 75 Hz but it seems stuck at 60 Hz on Mint.
Also I’d like to create a vertical panel on the side as a home for links to all of my favorite programs.
I can easily accomplish these things on SolydX.
Workplace Switcher seems stuck on 2 desktops – I can’t find a way to change it. Otherwise I haven’t broken anything yet! 😉
Hey Clem, thanks for a great release!! I do have one question though (and actually I saw this on a review for mint 16 as well), can you change the behavior of gksudo to remember the password for 15 minutes or so? That way when doing several things that require root privileges all at once (connecting to network and updating after a first install comes to mind) you don’t have to keep typing in the password over and over.
But overall, I LOVE Mint and this release looks amazing as usual! Also another question: will Mint 16 continue to have an updated Cinnamon going forward? I mean, I know it’s not an LTS, but will it receive all the latest Cinnamon updates until Mint 17 is released?
Thanks!
@El Zoido [#276]: Thanks for the skype fix, it works now!

Create a thumbnailer in usr/share/thumbnailers for MimeType inode/directory – when you try to run Nemo, it crashes with the error:

Installing cover-thumbnailer is an easy way to reproduce it.
Hi there, I noticed an issue relating to the power management. Seemingly randomly the OS gets into hibernate mode, although the battery is charged over 30% (Not connected to power!). That might be connected to the detection of the actual state of battery power. It seems to me that the displayed percentage or time stated as left battery is not correct and sometimes drops from eg 55% to 5% within couple of minutes.
I am not changing the activity of the computer like running suddenly something more power consuming.
I am using a Lenovo Y570 with Petra RC.
Thank you. I love Linux Mint!!
More info for #286 – Having same issue if I use fullscreen mode on youtube, Can not exit fullscreen mode.
Using google chrome, can not use esc key or F11 to exit fullscreen.
Also having intermitent issues with youtube flash loading. Ususally refreshing page will cause it to reload properly.
#283 – Cinnamon is started in software rendering mode when first logged out. If I log out again and log in again, Cinnamon starts fine.
I can confirm this and for a moment was horrified 🙂 thinking something wrong with graphics but then it worked fine on restart.
Installed this on Mint Box 2 and all worked fine. I replaced Cinnamon (With 24 inch HD Monitor, snapping / tiling is a must, I say!)with Mint 15 MATE and it created 3 partitions. 1 regular, 1 swap and some extended partition and some free space. Can I just delete the other unidentified one? The original box had only partitions.
All – If you have spare cash, go for Mint Box 2. Hoping there is some Xmas discount on Amazon! 🙂
@Aaron on #291 >> https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/2500 – Its been there for a while in tracker.
I’m seeing some display corruption in the Cinnamon menu applet. The scroll bar and just to the left of the scrollbar is corrupted. It’s just a minor visual issue and not a functional problem. This is on a Dell Inspiron 14 7000 series with Intel HD video. Also saw the fullscreen youtube issue reported by Aaron Mills (#289).
Not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but I have some small artifacts that appear randomly in text. Not sure if this is due to fonts or something like that. It’s definately not a show stopper.

I am successfully running Mint 16 RC on my old Dell Latitude D630 laptop. It looks and feels even more polished than previous versions. The only issue I have encountered is the System Monitor seems to freeze and is very sluggish to close the window. CPU activity shot up by ~50% while it was open. Hopefully this is an easy bug to fix, as I am very pleased with the rest of the release so far.

Minor problem : menu applet –> mint icon not visible on panel
For example, when 2 windows was open and show on screen, the minimize animation is sluggish. However, when only one window was on screen, the animation is perfect. Expo animation in hot corner is also suck compared to mint 14.

Is there any reason why Adobe Reader is not available in Synaptic with repositories provided by default? Evince is ok, but sometimes I need Adobe Reader.
P.S.: I find the deb for installing Adobe Reader in the website of Adobe: http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/unix/9.x/9.5.5/enu/AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i386linux_enu.deb
It installs and works without problem with Linux Mint 16.

– control center > windows
Display a little bit ‘heavier’ visually than LM15 espacially in French.
(EN): http://imagebin.org/277996
(FR): http://imagebin.org/277997
– Creating a user without password (maybe stupid but nothing prevents it): no way for that user to set one himself in Account Details.
– user1/logout/loginuser2 -> black screen (already reported as I saw)
– user login/logout (only the first time after boot then it’s ok)/login -> http://imagebin.org/278001 (and impossible to shutdown with menu only cancel button).
BUG: cups-pdf produces only a blank pdf page when I print to PDF. Tested on Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon 64bit with all updates installed (until the 20th November).
To reproduce the bug, try to open with Firefox the following page from Wikipedia and print to PDF with cups-pdf:
http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Mint
In Linux Mint 15, cups-pdf didn’t give me any problem. I frequently used it.
Thanks

@malligt: Thank you, now cups-pdf works, but… the default wrong “maker and model” is a bug during the installation of the package, because I expect that the cups-pdf printer is installed correctly as in the past. Previously I’ve never done any manual intervention to make it working.
BUG: If a try to remove a repository from Synaptic, it will crash and exit without removing it.
Step to reproduce:
1) Add the following (not existing) repository:
sudo add-apt-repository “deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner”
2) Then:
sudo apt-get update
It will give error because http://archive.canonical.com/dists/petra/partner/binary-amd64/Packages doesn’t exist. It’s ok for now.
3) Open Synaptic > Settings > Repository
4) Select the first row:
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ petra partner
5) Click on the button “Delete” to remove the repository. Synaptic will close immediately without remove the selected repository.
Tested on Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon 64bit updated on November 20th.
I removed the repository manually with:
sudo rm ‘/etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list’
sudo touch ‘/etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list’
sudo apt-get update

Could you please walk me through this procedure? I tried to do it on my own and i must be doing something wrong cause it wont boot.

bug: Cinnamon failed to load at all on my HP!
When my battery charges to 100% its actually displayed at 0% (its displayed correctly when its under 99% and under). If I then remove the power cable the laptop hibernates as it thinks it has no power in the battery.
Im running on a Compaq Presario C740.
It sounds like this very old bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upower/+bug/583271
where the figures residing somehwere in /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0 are not correct, eg energy_full shows 3518000 and energy_now shows 4610000 (ie a higher figure for the current energy than its actually possible).
Oh and the installer crashed when installing onto my harddisk from the live USB stick but I will put that down as a one off 😉
Regards,
Scott
This bug affects linuxmint (so its an upstream but I assume).
It may make your battery believe its 0% charged when really its 100% charged. It causes the system to shutdown/hibernate when the power is removed.

@Todd and for developers: I also noted small problems on text rendering, for example sometimes a text in a box of web page in which I’m writing disappears. I solved the problem changing the video card driver from the default “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” to the proprietary “nvidia-304” driver (using the driver manager).
The side effect is that the NVIDIA drivers generate errors (without effects) during start-up and the LinuxMint logo is no longer displayed during the boot sequence, or prevent the shutdown of the computer. These problems with the NVIDIA drivers were much more problematic in LinuxMint15 (they could create a random kernel panic during the boot sequence), but with LinuxMint16 it’s better.
I don’t know what suggest you for your video card: check if you have other drivers available in the Driver Manager.
Bug report:
In gThumb, select a picture, right-click on it, select “Set as Desktop Background”, once applied, click the “Preferences” button on the green banner that just appeared at the bottom of the gThumb window and you’ll get the error message “Failed to execute child process “gnome-control-center” (No such file or directory)” – obviously, because this component is not installed by default anymore since it is now managed by Cinnamon…
Maybe you could tweak the gThumb settings to refer to Cinnamon instead of Gnome.
Thanks for your great work!
Feature request:
In the “Users and Groups”, when on “Groups” tab, it could be great to have a way to see the members of a selected group and add new members to the group as well. Currently, we can only edit the group name…
When I give the command lsdvd I get the error message “Can’t find device /dev/dvd”.
Looking in /dev the /dev/dvd entry is missing although /dev/sr0 is there.
(Using lsdvd /dev/sr0 works fine)
Hi Linux Mint Team,
I tested Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon 64bit from USB.
-Laptop Vaio SVF152 -CPU Pentium 987, Intel HD Graphics, Display 1920 x 1080
Petra didn’t work (black screen) 🙁
-Laptop Asus R700VJ (K75VJ) -CPU i3-3110M, GeForce GT 635M
Petra running correct. In Cinnamon no work function control keyboard shortcut (Hot Keys), Petra also no using GT635M, only CPU intergrated graphic cards HD Graphics 4000.
- Dell Studio 1558 -CPU i5 M520, ATI Radeon HD 4500. Display resolution 1920×1080
Petra running well but few problems.
Issues and shortages:
– In Menu no printer icon. Nemo also show no printer icon, only USB device icon
– Laptop + external monitor(RS232). If laptop display is OFF, external monitor is ON and closing laptop lid, didin’t suspend laptop and external display.
– If click “Lock screen” in Cinnamon, background don’t show full name year (only 20 without end) PL language
– In Setting-Display no information about screen frequency (Hz) and click “Detect Display” showing nothing (1 or 2 connected monitors)
– Frequently after Petra udpade, panel icon show message „Could not refresh list of packages“

I found another issue: the power management settings for laptops do not work.
– any choice of the ‘suspend when inactive for’ parameter lets the computer never go to suspend mode
– any choice of the ‘when the lid is closed’ parameter: the computer always suspends
– any choice of ‘power button action’ leads to an immediate shutdown when pressed
Not sure if already reported but sometimes I get this weird graphical bug using Cinnamon when I sometimes open apps/windows appear. Takes on the appearance of w/e was there ATM.

Re: # 314
I stand by my statement as to this cups-pdf contention of yours is not a bug.
It is absolutely 100% user a configurable item, ergo not a bug.
What you have experienced with cups-pdf in the past in any former Mint configuration/release is precisely that– past.
Time to move on.
In a very l-l-l-l-l-l-ong stretch, if Mint 16 had incorporated cups-pdf into their RC distribution, then perhaps you may have an issue.
But, Mint 16 does NOT incorporate cups-pdf into their M-16 RC, ergo no bug.
Regards!

Maybe found a fix for the full screen problem in Google Chrome. When I enabled the “Use system title bar and borders” option, the problem is gone on my system.

Having trouble updating the RC for the past two days. Refreshing the cache never completes due to it stopping at the following and I end up having to cancel:
Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com/dists/petra/main/i18n/Translation-en_US.xz
Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com/dists/petra/main/i18n/Translation-en.bz2
Waiting and letting it fail on it’s own gives me an error box with this:
W: Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com/dists/petra/InRelease
W: Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com/dists/petra/Release.gpg Unable to connect to extra.linuxmint.com:http:
W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
The “Unable to connect to extra.linuxmint.com:http:” definitely doesn’t look right. Why the “http:” at the end?
This happens with every mirror I’ve tried in both the 32 bit version and 64 bit version of LM 16/Cinnamon. Refreshing the cache (MintUpdate or Software Sources or via terminal) loads all the sources until it gets to the above and either takes 2 to 4 minutes to complete or simply doesn’t complete at all and I have to manually cancel the operation.
In the terminal it gets as far as this and apparently can’t connect:
[Connecting to extra.linuxmint.com (204.45.82.194)]
This seems to be the last source it needs to refresh as far as I can tell. Changing mirrors does not help the problem. Going into Software Sources/Maintenance and clicking “Fix MergeList Problems” doesn’t help either.
Just letting you know.
When running a game through wine in Mint 16, I get a windows error about direct3d saying I need to reboot my computer or try reinstalling direct x.
However the game works flawlessly in Mint 15. Same wine version, same everything.
Any ideas?? Laptop w/ integrated graphics. Game is SWGEmu through Launchpad Enhanced….
@malligt, thanks for the fix for the cups-pdf settings, mine was making blank PDFs as well. 🙂
This doesn’t seem to have been mentioned previously, so maybe I’m just doing something wrong…
I cannot right-click on windows in the ‘Window list’ panel applet to bring up the menu for maximizing, minimizing, closing, etc. Nothing happens when I right-click on a window in the panel. I’m used to right-clicking on a minimized window to then close it.
I’m using the ‘Cinnamon’ theme, if that’s a factor.
After installation, the system is frozen (kernel.log):
ACPI Error: [DSSP] Namespace lookup failure, AE_NOT_FOUND (20120320/psargs-359)
P.S. Cinnamon 64-bit.
im having issues with adobe air and getting it installed in cinnamon any suggestions??

Hi, clem I realize that you’re doing everything you can to give us an awesome system. But I currently came across an issue with the new LM 16 cinnamon. In this release ia32-libs has been removed, which is need for me to build dependencies for adobeair, which is needed for some of my programs. If there is another way to adobeair I’ll withdraw this issue, or if you have anyway of getting a 64bit deb of adobe air. Thankyou.
Ok, so I want to follow up again on the wireless support for MacBook Pro laptops, and this time I’m directing this @Clem
Clem, I have just gotten through doing an install of LM16 Cinnamon RC. I have managed to secure myself a wired Internet connection, but I’ve learned something. Maybe you realize this, and maybe you don’t, but did you know you can’t successfully install LM16 *without* an Internet connection?
It installs the operating system, but then once it tries to install language packs, it all goes downhill from there. Installing Grub2 fails, and this evidently includes the whole process dealing with EFI. Of course, since I’m using a MacBook Pro, I have to deal with EFI. And, of course, since there’s no WiFi support on the Live image, I cannot install and boot my computer with LM, either 15 or 16.
And again, if the appropriate Broadcom support that is present in the LM-used repos was included on the Live image and in the stock install, then this wouldn’t be a problem.
So… is there some way to resolve this? It is unnecessarily frustrating for people trying to use what is at this point relatively ubiquitous — and, let’s face it, fully supported — hardware with our favorite Linux distro, when that distro doesn’t really fully support us.
Thanks!
Only two potential bugs I’ve come across.
1. I did the “do something else” install to select the partition to install to. Petra RC did not run grub for me, or so it seems; after failing to boot, and apparently leaving the boot menu the same, I manually had to set up grub from my working mint 14 partition.
2. Yet once again suspend is broken; goes to sleep, but hangs after attempting to resume. This seems to frequently happen whenever there is a new release of some distro. I’m running on an amd a6-3400 integrated ati graphics laptop (Samsung Series 3 NP305E5A-A03US).
Nevermind about my comment in #330 – after restarting my computer the right-click menu for windows is now working properly!
Hi Clem,
thank you for the answers.
I found that system improvement “APT “recommends” disabled by default” also causes a lot of problems with installing software. As already mentioned earlier, during the installation of the software some important component are not installed automatically. Here are some examples: nvidia-*** (nvidia-settings-***), wine (wine-gecko-***, ttf-mscorefonts-installer) and so on. And that’s just what I encountered – sure there are more of such problems.
To solve this problem I had to edit configuration files (/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00recommends & /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99synaptic) – I have replaced there all “false” to “true”.
Thanks a lot.
Edit by Clem: I think the pros outweight the cons here. Regarding the drivers, this was added (post-RC) to mintdrivers so setting tools would be installed automatically.

Clem, it’s been just over a week now since I’ve been using Mint 16 Cinnamon, and on the whole it’s very good, but there are a few little niggles that affect stablility as noted in my post (#77). I have also found that I cannot install Google Earth, or Teamviewwer. This may be an upstream issue though, as I understand that the ia32-libs file has been inexplicably removed from the Ubuntu repos. Is there a fix or a workaround for this in the pipeline?
@ Clem:
Sorry, there was one other thing, I’m no longer gettting any notifications for emails in evolution. No sound alert, and no visual popup alerts.
Feature request: if a create a luncher on my desktop, I can select an icon for it (with preview)… instead, if a modify a launcher in the menu with the “menu editor”, I can select a different icon but without preview. Can you please add the preview feature? Thank you.
I wrote a lot of posts on this page with my observations, anyway … thanks for all your wonderful work! 🙂

Small bug: if a launch from a bash script nemo to open an ftp server more than one time, with a command such as “nemo ftp://ftp.xxx.xyz“, I can get a duplicate icon on my desktop, see screenshot:

It’s not very important, however I expect only one icon.
@Portreve
One handy gadget I always keep with me, is a USB wireless adapater, that linux has no trouble installing. For the most part, I never need it, but it has come in handy on occasions when I come across a laptop/desktop that just can’t/won’t connect to the internet any other way, and get’s me out of the catch 22 situation where: “I need the internet to download and install the drivers for my wireless adapter, but my wired connection isn’t connecting so I need to install the drivers for that, only my internet isn’t connecting to my wireless in order for me to do so.”
I use the Linksys WUSB54G for those little emergencies and it’s always just ready to go on boot up. Wireless adapters are dead cheap nowadays, so just splash out a few [whatevers in your currency] and get one to keep handy for such eventualities. I hope that helps.
@PirateGRC:
Regarding your caps lock querie, there is an applet on the cinnamon/spices website that will do just that. It’s been around for a while though so not sure if it will work with Cinnamon 2. Here’s the link: http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/37
Hope that helps.
Is everyone update manager down? unable to get updates
@Kyowoo (340) – I’ve had problems in both 32 and 64 bit versions of LM 16/Cinnamon for two days until this morning but it’s not the Update Manager. I’ve had the same problem trying to update via the terminal and Synaptic. The problem appears to be with trying to connect to “deb http://extra.linuxmint.com petra main”, it simply times out.
This morning I was able to update without a problem though. I left a rather detailed comment here last night which included text from error boxes and error callouts from the terminal but it probably got sent to the spam folder due to WordPress changing every line beginning with “http” into a link.
Kirk M thank you and yes it finaly started working for me also thx again
When I enable level 4 and 5 in the mint update manager and run sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade in a terminal I suppose to get kernel updates right? Well nothing appeared in the terminal and nothing appears in the update manager either. If go to Synaptic I see that there is a newer kernel called 3.11.0-13-generic. I’m currently running 3.11.0-12-generic. Bug or does it suppose to behave like this?
Edit by Clem: It’s supposed to work like that. 3.11.0-13-generic is an opt-in. Based on feedback it might become a level 3 update.
If I install the RC, I assume this will automatically get patched up to the same level as the final release via the update manager? There wouldn’t be anything missing that would require re-installing from the final release, would there? Could someone please confirm? Thanks.
Edit by Clem: No, not necessarily. You’ll need to read the upgrade notes in the stable release announcements. For instance this time around there’s a change in apt priorities so it’s not straight forward. Basically the RC is for people to help the team test and prepare the stable release, it’s not for people to run the upcoming new release early on their main system.
When I right-click an item, the menu entry “Send by Email” is not translated. I cannot find it in Launchpad, so it seems that it was not included as a translatable phrase. The same goes for the tooltip (Send as email attachment). Also, “Check MD5” and its associated tooltip are not translated.
Another one that isn’t translated/translatable: “Enter your password to perform administrative tasks”
Any chance the mint team can implement the new freetype 2.5, it has just been released and the difference is actually pretty major is the clarity and quality of text on LCD screens.
hi together,

The use of the nVidia proprietary drivers delays the boot by 20-25 mins with a couple of lines of text showing. The text says something about tty1 and logging in. This normally has a fleeting presence. Back to Nouveau (yuk) drivers.
It should be ‘delays boot by 20-25 **seconds**.
Trackpad on my Lenovo B590 laptop was not working properly. Mouse pointer was moving, but tapping had no effect. Quick check of System settings / touchpad revealed that “Enable mouseclicks with touchpad” option was not selected by default. After selecting it manually everything works fine.
I tried to play a movie with vlc. I paused and did some stuff with nemo. After that, when I got into full screen mode in vlc, the black areas where there was no video (that’s what happens when the video doesn’t have the size of the screen) had their colors from nemo in the background. Even after I minimized nemo the colors didn’t change. It is such a color difference that the movie is now unwatchable.

With VLC, when using an external optical drive,
for as long as i can remember,
you had to change your preferences in VLC.
Tools -> Preferences -> Input & codecs
-> then under optical drive -> change to “/dev/dvd” to “/dev/sr0”
I never thought it had changed!

When I give the command lsdvd I get the error message “Can’t find device /dev/dvd”.
Looking in /dev the /dev/dvd entry is missing although /dev/sr0 is there.
(Using lsdvd /dev/sr0 works fine)

Cannot install either Cinnamon or MATE 16 on my Lenovo M91 desktop. Made several attempts – got varied error messages – “Executing Grub install dummy failed”; “bootloader crashed”; “DHCP//… PXXE-E53: No boot filename received, PXE: M0F exiting Intel Boot Agent, Error 1962: No operating system”. Before trying the install, I used gparted to remove all patrtitions for a clean install. Now, after many attempts, I just get a blank screen with a flashing cursor. Looking at the drive with gparted from the live DVD, it shows a FAT partition, an ext4 partition and a swap partition, all apparently populated. But no boot. Can you please assist?

Evolution-mail is part of GNOME, so it is not translated as part of LM.
@376 Mintkatze:
I am from Denmark. I am the Danish translator. Danish is 100% translated and I tried searching for the phrases in Launchpad to see if an error had occurred. However, I could not find the phrases, so my guess is that they were not included for translation.

I’m liking Petra so far as it’s very snappy and runs great on my 4-year-old desktop. Unlike Ubuntu 13.10, it’s not sluggish at all. However, CPU seems to be an issue. The Gnome System Monitor uses a ridiculously high amount of CPU and at times so does Cinnamon. Sounds like it’s putting a strain on my computer. This is my only complaint.

I’d just like to thank the team for fixing the ‘system hangs when logging out then back in’ bug a few of us reported, great job. I’ve been using Mint and recommending it to my friends for a few years now, thanks to your hard work Petra is shaping up to be one of the best releases so far. Many thanks.

re: # 390 kernel bug
Was this kernel update obtained through Mint-Updates? No it wasn’t.
This is (one of several reasons) why Mint recommends not changing kernels….that is to say you may experience regressions or have additional problems.
Boot back into the original 3.11.0-12 supplied kernel….and your problems should go away.
When the 3.11.0-14 kernel is released, be aware that the same thing may happen if you elect to try it out.
The add-apt-repository command doesn’t work with “gksu” and “pkexec” which causes various scripts that require this to break under Linux Mint 16 (Y PPA Manager tool for instance).
Clem – I’ve installed LM16 Cinnamon twice now on 2 separate machines and both times the Icon “LM” picture disappears where the Menu button is….any ideas?

Returning from a lot of other tasks, the persistent USBkey’s installation ReStart woke up VLC Player and allowed satisfactory Handbrake operation !
Sadly, this variant of LinuxMint Cinnamon won’t take my early Mint13 Cinnamon APTonCD DEB file download of the old Nvidia-295 driver with its incredibly useful Overscan adjustment that allows HDMI cable connection to a large screen SmartTV, so Mint13 Cinnamon looks set to stay for large-screen demonstrations of LinuxMint, but I’ll try again with the formal release or later with the Mint17 Cinnamon release ?

No these were not, I haven’t tested yet on a VM.
These were on a laptop – HP ProBook 4545s – and a desktop – Intel based with Gigabyte mb.
Not sure, maybe it’s something stupid =]
1. I’ll second Michael’s (#370) interest in freetype 2.5+. The Fedora 20 development releases use it, where it does make a noticeable positive difference in rendering quality compared to earlier versions. Ubuntu is using 2.5.0.1 in Trusty at the moment so I’d guess we could see it in Mint 17.
2. Cinnamon 64-bit install here on Thinkpad W530 using Intel video was routinely uneventful. Wasn’t able to edit workspace names until today’s theme updates. Nemo-Dropbox went bellyup trying to install the Dropbox executable, as others have reported. I killed it at 88% of CPU and did the command line install per instructions on their download page. Otherwise, all seems OK.
I’m comparing Cinnamon and MATE. Cinnamon has it on aesthetics and polish. MATE has it on workspace handling. Decisions, decisions.
I installed Linux Petra Cinnamon 64 bit, very fast and good.
Update manager alway the same, very slow. Why not use Apper?
And I have brightness problem.
Everytime that I reboot screen brightness is at the minimum.
Can somebody help me?
I use a lapotp, nvidia card.
thanks

On first run, had to change display driver to nvidia instead of nouveau. Then Google Earth and Teamviewer 64 bit versions wouldn’t install because of unmet dependencies but using the 32 bit version of each of these works just fine. All looking good so far 🙂
Installed the cinnamon 64bit
after every reboot screenbrightness goes to the minimum
is it a bugg? solution?

In extra pane view you can’t drag and drop to the other pane unless you choose the pane you wont first.
Same with opening files and folders you have to choose the pane before you can open.
In LM 14 you could just grab and move to the other pane and open files or folders in the other pane without choosing a pane.
When you unmount a usb drive the files window does not close like before.
Now you have to close the window after you unmount a drive.

The applets font is bold but the rest of the font is normal.
Looks better when all is set to normal.

I have the same problem with installing programs in wine.
They install but will not launch.
Desktop zoom
Still don’t have mousewheel zoom by tobiusquinn or something similar.
Can finally assign groups, works great.
Desklets are a great addition.
All I can think of at the moment.
Still exploring.
Cinnamint just keeps getting better and better.
Thanks Mint team for all your hard work.
It is much appreciated.
First of all, congratulations for this excellent new release. I’ve been testing it since three days (64 bits on a fujitsu laptop using a 3G connection and a fujitsu desktop using a high speed adsl link and a proxy). Every thing works fine with the 3G connection; but with the proxy i noticed that the synaptic manager does not connect to the internet, even when firefox and chromium do. I modified the network parmeters inside synaptic manager with the proxy address and port: no success!! andmore, when i check again the network parameters, i find they go back to “direct connection to the internet” !!!!
@ 391 malligt,
I am running this kernel now since a few hours and there has been no more such thing, also not in the updates. But: when the developers know, that there is such a thing, why do they put int into Synaptic then (I do only hae the normal standard repositories there enabled! No romeo or such a thing!!)??
As I said: I opened Synaptic and found that kernel and installed it because of having had some trouble with videoplayer before (videos were not playing on some websites). This kernel solved that up for the most part. And other things run fine as far as I see.
Hi Clem,
got 2 problems with my installation.
1. Changing any applet causes Cinnamon to hang (understand this is a known bug)
2. Initial boot fails to mount any non system drives (windows partition and usb). Requires log out then login to mount.
Haven’t noticed any other problems so far.
wow…just…WOW!! Been using Ubuntu for too long, SOOOOO glad to be back on THE. BEST. DISTRO. EVER. And this is only the RC!!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!
Everyday my computer freezes then logs me out of MDM and brings me back to the X window prompt
with an error message saying something like
“nouveau failed to idle driver (Xorg 1199)”
I assume that any future upgrade to Nouveau are outside of Linux Mint’s control, but I don’t remember getting this error with 13.10 Gnome Ubuntu.

For those of you having trouble with the nemo-dropbox package for Dropbox integration with nemo on Mint 16 RC, here is the solution that worked for me:
********
https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo-extensions/issues/20
********
Basically, uninstall nemo-dropbox and follow the directions for downloading and installing the linux daemon according to the Dropbox site EXCEPT for the part where you start the actual daemon. Just download it, that’s all. Then reinstall nemo-dropbox and it will work just fine.
I haven’t actually looked at what causes it, but my wild guess would be that it’s something silly like the package doesn’t know to decompress the downloaded daemon or something.
Not sure if this is a bug but no one’s bene able to give me a workaround yet and similar issue I’ve found on lenovo forums for peeps trying to run ubuntu but their fix of modifying the grub didn’t work.
Install Mint 13 beside Windows 7 (each own partition) fine and easy as pie
Install Mint 15 the same fine.. and as easy as installing an OS can be
Try to Install Mint 16 get “secure boot not enabled screen” from live stick and it just hannnngs there. Went in and tweaked the options in my bios but still nothing.
Not sure what mint 16 is looking for, so what new hoop came into play with 16?

re: 400
Old axiom: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Here’s the best I can offer you…and I defer in great majority to Mint and Clem beyond my heavily self-restrained comments.
Mint does not put “things” into synaptic. The sources in synaptic are what I would describe as “upstream”-beyond Mint’s control… one example is what they get from ubuntu 13.10….just for purposes of discussion here.
Mint Update has levels 1-5, correct? Kernel updates are NOT in the default update levels of 1-3, for the reasons in my earlier post —-regression and/or additional problems.
So, I would ask you…were you having any hardware issues with the default kernel?
I didn’t/couldn’t find any problems/hardware issues in your earlier postings.
So, with all due respect…if it ain’t broke…why did you go and update the kernel on your system…and outside the (default) limits of mint update?
And now you do have problems….and you ask me why?
Self-inflicted.
Not a pleasant answer I realize.
So from now on, boot into the original “default” 3.11.0-12 kernel and you won’t have the problems.
Yes, there is much much more beyond my reply here. But, Clem, or his representatives should speak to this, and not me.
I hope you take my advice, and continue to enjoy Mint 16.

I think libnss3-1d:i386 should be installed by default in the final release if possible so that we can install adobeair without having to muck around in random forums and xchat to find this solution. Since all adobeair forums, bulletions, and information is so badly outdated. I thank you much if this happens.

Hello, thanks for all your hard work and efforts.
I am running a Lenovo Ideapad Z585 (261729U) laptop. It has a A10-4600M 64bit, Integrated AMD Radeon HD 7660G, LED backlit, with broadcom wireless. UEFI/secure boot is turned off.
Bug: When I attempt to boot the LM 16 Cinnamon 64bit ISO, boot screen comes up ok, then enter to run live cd, screen goes black/dim and just hangs. FYI-Win7 and Win8 (Yuck) 64bit install flawlessly, as it should.
Just being curious, I tried the 32bit ISO and it booted. There was a error message something like Backlight error, but then the 32bit ISO just plowed through and continued to Live CD environment.Once into 32 bit live, attempted to connect wireless…
Bug: The Mint Driver Tool detects the Broadcom wireless (propriety), click apply, starts to apply (indicator), then self cancels.??
Otherwise, so far it all else looks good/works in Live mode. I have not installed yet. I shall try again on final release. 🙂
Cheers, M8
Hi Clem
Got around to installing the RC on my main machine, it runs great. I have noticed a couple of the bugs people have reported but nothing too major. One bug I have seen is as follows:
1. Open nemo (unminimised)
2. Copy some files so that the transfer window is present
3. Open another program (unminimised) and in front of nemo such as firefox
4. If the transfer window is open (maximised) in front of the other program (firefox for example) and you click to minimise the transfer window, nemo will automatically pop up in front of the other program.
Not a major bug but annoying from a window management point of view.
Also, was there supposed to be a transfer applet in this release? I don’t see it coming up when I transfer files. Just curious.
Anyway, I will keep testing. Great release mint team, well done. Keep up the awesome work. 🙂
Bug: change desktop background not showing up when I right-click on the desktopon Cinnamon
@Dean #367
Yes, I suppose you’re right: the RC will be automatically updated to the final release through the update manager. However, I cannot make sure of any missing package in the RC or of any difference between an updated RC and the final version.
Aside from the nemo-dropbox package problem (for which I posted a workaround up above in case anyone is looking), I have also noticed that the Skype package behaves quite differently from the one I had installed on Mint 14 MATE previously. I don’t know much about Cinnamon or Mint’s audio infrastructure so it’s hard for me to understand the problem, but in laymen’s terms, it seems like Skype is all-or-nothing when it comes to audio. It takes complete control from the rest of the system, and if it can’t it just fails to do anything related to audio.
For example, if I’m playing a music video in a web browser and I start Skype, it will start without audio. If I start Skype, then play a video, then try to make a call, the call will generate an error message about being unable to use audio. If I am in the middle of a Skype call, I can’t hear anything else in the system. If I am in a call and I try to play a video in a media player, the player will pause at the start point. I can position the player at any point in the video, but it will always be stuck at each point, as if it’s waiting on some audio resource to be released by Skype. I also used Mumble and did not have any of these problems, and the media players work fine when I’m not in a Skype call.
I also noticed another problem but had trouble reproducing it consistently so I don’t know if it’s related to the above or not. I use a Firefox add-on called Ant Video Downloader to download videos from web pages, and while in a Skype call, I could go to pages with videos but the add-on would not recognize the video and there would be no download options listed as usual. However, refreshing the page mostly fixed the problem and brought up the options. I’m testing the video downloader without running Skype now and I notice none of these problems, so I think it’s related to Skype, but not sure.
Another minor quibble is that Firefox has occasionally been freezing up for a few seconds for me. I know this used to happen a lot in Firefox a while back, but as of late, its stability had much improved for me on Mint 14 MATE. I don’t know if Firefox just had some new issues or if it has to do with something like Cinnamon.
I apologize for the long, highly unscientific post, and thank you so much for the amazing release and hard work! I will definitely be making a donation soon as a thanks for all versions since Mint 12, which have made my custom PC affordable to maintain as a student these past couple of years.
Hi,
i have trouble with recovering from hibernate: I get the X login screen with the clock, then I enter the correct password, and then nothing happens, except the password box going away. The system does not hang: I can move the mouse cursor and I can switch to console (for instance by entering ctrl-alt-f2). But I cannot restart X with ctrl-alt-backspace. I don’t have experience in these sorts of things so I’m not sure what logfile to look at to try to solve this problem, but I’d be happy to help if I can. Let me know what to do and I’ll report back.
My computer is a HP EliteBook 8560w.
When I ran “apt-get update” on the LiveUSB I got this:
”
W: Failed to fetch cdrom://Linux Mint 16 _petra_ – Release amd64 20131113/dists/saucy/contrib/binary-i386/Packages Please use apt-cdrom to make this CD-ROM recognized by APT. apt-get update cannot be used to add new CD-ROMs
(and the same for main and non-free)
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
”
It didn’t cause any actual problems that I noticed though.
Installing over my old ubuntu install, in a dualboot setup with windows 7, repeatedly failed to install grub until I used my windows disk to rewrite the mbr first.
Today, after installing last night, I find almost half of the repositories are giving 404 errors, for example:
”
W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/petra-updates/multiverse/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.91.14 80]
”
preventing me from installing any packages. I got a few 404s when I was running live as well, but they resolved on retry, so I guess I’ll try again later.
Other minor bugs I’ve noticed so far: the power manager applet in the panel has no icon, just a small gap between the applets on either side of it (Maybe because I’m on a desktop, so it’s only giving the power level of my wireless mouse in the menu?), and the update manager panel icon is a blank white square (It changed to the proper shield icon at one point when I tried to update, but turned back to the solid square when I moved something in panel edit mode, and trying to update again isn’t bringing it back again.)
Also the lack of image preview when selecting an icon for a launcher in the menu editor.
After installing Linux Mint Petra did not change the system language. Regional settings did not help. System language changed only after correction file /etc/default/locale. Change the line with LANG = “ru_RU.UTF-8” to LANG = ru_RU.UTF-8 (without the quotes). Only after that the system russified.
P.S. I am sorry for my english.
Hi Guys, Great job on the new mint 16 the RC runs very well on my PC AMD 64 Phenom 2 – x4 955 CPUs – 4GB of MEM & a Radeon HD 6670/7670. The only thing I found was that skype was dropping out when calls were taken, I checked out the pos course and it was reporting that it could not fined the audio. Skype installed ok and logged in fine but would drop as soon as a call was taken or sent. I did fined a fix on the web advising to install libasound2-plugins:i386 and libasound2:i386 this so far has fixed the issue of it dropping out when making or receiving calls. Other than that it just all works for me.
Ho, I for got to say I love all the new changes to cinnamon, it looks and gets better and the Mint team always seem to make it look nicer to with all the tweaking that go`s on. If it was not for you Guys at Mint I would have got an Apple PC, and with all this hard work sweet and tears you guys give, well it would be a wast not to use mint. I love it.
Hi Mint Team
Mint 16 RC runs extremely well on my Dell Inspiron 5520.
Managed to install it via USB.
Initial installation crashed, when attempting to format my previous mint partition. I have two solid state drives in the laptop (No DVD ROM). On second attempt installation went ahead flawlessly – and so far so good nothing major encountered.
However something to mention, I have noticed (and this is not only on my laptop, but on my Desktop – running Mint 15). When changing themes or applets or even changing the panel location – Both machines tend to freeze up – the only thing I can do is hard reset the machines.
Any ideas what could be causing this, and is this normal?
Second question I have is that my laptop has AMD/Intel Graphics.
Is there way to take advantage of using both these cards, or at least to disable one of them. I find that one of the fans is running overtime – I suspect the AMD GPU fan.
At the moment I use:
echo “min_power” | tee /sys/class/scsi_host/host*/link_power_management_policy
to keep the fan from running like crazy none stop.
Otherwise great release, been supporting and jumping from version to version since Mint 10!
Very disappointed! after an update on Olivia (my parents) get no MDM login screen more and I’m dumped to CLI. After CLI login I do startx and everything works normally. I think that Linux this way cannot gain popularity against WIN or mac OS. It is not normal to get this kind of troubles after updating!
Edit by Clem: First, this is an RC, second we don’t recommend distro upgrades via APT. You’re supposed to wait for the stable release, then test it from the live DVD, then decide on whether you want to use it or not. You can take risks and shortcuts but then you need to take part of the blame when/if things start to go wrong.
First of all, thanks for the release candidate, very recommended !
I am at the moment in south-eastern Asia, in the land of smile, at the edge of civilization.
As I wanted to install Linux Mint (with the most recent available version). As I only have Internet connection via mobile network, I managed to get the image downloaded in a store, the quite larger image was not an issue.
What could be improved (so might say it sucks):
* after installation, some applications are cleaned (e.g. gparted), I would need to reload, but hard under such conditions
* I install in English, for personal use I would like to have German and the local language packs. With a network speed lower than 30KiB/sec (having dropouts), I am having troubles. A spell checker and the system translations would be needed, but the gimp and Thunderbird
language support packages are pain in the ***. Also the packages for Australia and New Zealand don’t leave me a smile (sorry for that countries).
* to include cheese might be a good idea, that the web-cams can be checked instantly, onboard might be also considered (in case keyboard is faulty or completely different – CTL)
With the patience of a monk I could stand the download, although it got stuck at connection problems – I closed the window, but couldn’t re-open language support, after reboot I it started where it broke, so luckily, not to download the whole again !

re:Teamviewer
Releases beginning with Ubuntu 12.04 going forward began multiarch support.
About TEAMVIEWER
Go to the Teamviewer website, and select the 32 bit/multiarch download. It works perfectly in Mint 16 64 bit.
– Teamviewer 32 bit/multiarch does work.
* But Google Earth 32Bit it’s half – working cause with any protetiary or manual install drivers for AMD VGAs it’s saying that VGA isn’t supported. The Google Earth it’s loading and the whole globe is black… any fix or setting for this Google Earth issue using AMD Drivers/VGAs (HD 7870)? I remember that I have the same problem using Google Earth also at Mint 15.
In General Mint 16 Petra Cinnammon 64Bit rocks!
I am trying to add a profile picture of me to the login screen (vain or what?). Anyway, I found a nice picture of me — its a 500k jpeg. I go into users and groups and then change profile picture. I select brows for more pictures, and then click on the jpeg of me (I am not in cinnamon-settings-users.py) At this point, clicking either “ok” or “cancel” does nothing. The only way I can leave this dialog is to click the “x” close window, top right.
Hi Clem,
I understand and respect your position on these system improvements (Higher APT priority and APT “recommends” disabled by default), but please write in Petra’s release notes that they can cause problems for some users, and explain there how to disable them.
Thanks in advance.
* With any proprietary VGA driver or a manually installed VGA driver with AMD VGA Cards the menu icon doesn’t appear. The Linux Mint Menu icon on taskbar only appears with xorg drivers.
@ PirateGRC # 433 Google-Earth-Stable_current_i386.deb
Don’t know what more to say….
I re-followed the instructions that I posted in #432:
I clicked on the Mint forum link above (in #432), and installed all the 250+ packages mentioned in that link, then I downloaded and installed Google Earth 32 bit (with gdebi) from the Google Earth website, and it works 100% perfectly on my Mint 16-RC 64 Cinnamon desktop. The whole thing of following post #432 went without a hiccup on my machine.
* After the latest mint updates and manually installing the AMD VGA Catalyst 13.11betav9.4 I can install and run with no problems the 32 bit .deb Google Earth – Teamviewer 32 bit/multiarch also works fine 🙂
** Linux Mint Menu Icon still does NOT appear but only the icon. Menu’s functionality is fine.
*** Can’t find any working applet for indicating Caps Lock On/Off.
**** I also can’t find any fix or solution for not working hardware acceleration for some flash contents on Firefox or Chromium or any other browser but after some googleing it might is a general and common problem with Linux Adobe Flash plugin versions and anyway Flash and Java contents are problems theirself at any OS.
Hello all,
I’m still waiting for some help about my problem with the use of proxy server on mint 16 Petra: no update and no package install working, but Firefox and chromium work fine!!! ( see details in post #400). Every thing work well with direct connection to the internet. Please help and many thanks
I’m having problems with my multi monitor setup on my laptop.
The desktop freezes on the startup, only shows desktop icons but no panel bars. If I start without the HDMI monitor connected there’s no problem.
@MBZ
I’m behind a proxy also.
I always have to make proxy settings in /etc/apt/apt.conf and /etc/environment:
/etc/apt/apt.conf:
Acquire::http::proxy “http://123.12.10.225:3128/”;
Acquire::ftp::proxy “ftp://123.12.10.225:3128/”;
Acquire::https::proxy “https://123.12.10.225:3128/”;
/etc/environment:
http_proxy=”http://123.12.10.225:3128/”
https_proxy=”https://123.12.10.225:3128/”
ftp_proxy=”ftp://123.12.10.225:3128/”
socks_proxy=”socks://123.12.10.225:3128/”
I have to do this in all ubuntu based distros.
An update on Skype not seeming to use Pulseaudio – this can be fixed with:
sudo apt-get install libpulse0:i386
This wasn’t necessary in other distros (I guess they pulled this in automatically?), but sorted it for me in cinnamon. Everything working great in Cinnamon now, very pleased.
Cannot open and install Chrome
“Create new launcher” does not have a location option
Outstanding release for an RC.
Spectacular wallpaper.
Is there a way to get the wallpapers from 16 to 15?
One more bug to report.
When I play music through Rhythmbox or VLC the sound applet does not change to provide you with the controls for the player. Haven’t tested with Banshee. Am I missing something or is this a bug? Can anyone else confirm this on their systems?
I am using Linux mint 15, in which I met some problems while connecting to internet by using my phone via Bluetooth. the system successfully connect to the phone but sometimes fails to connect to the internet due to some coverage problems. if it fails, then the whole screen blackens with many error codes. we need to restart again to use the system, but all our temporary files will be lost.
I would like to know whether the same problem is there in the new version or not?
thank you
Hello! Linux Mint Rocks!
Ive had this happen twice; Complete system shut down when using google hangouts. The video/audio works but they system shuts down completely. Doesnt reboot on its own. I have yet to figure out exactly what caused it. Its never happened on previous Releases.
Samsung A305us, 8g Ram, Quad Core.
Other than that…fantastic. Long Live MINT!
Thanks
@132
My mintlogo png file for the “start” menu wouldn’t display at all, but I resolved the issue by using a svg file. I don’t think this was a bug with Mint, but rather a driver or resolution issue.
Best release yet!
32-bit system.
1. LM16 starts differently using nouveau or nvidia 319 driver. The nvidia driver slows boot down. Nvidia driver is necessary for proper rendering of google-earth and games such as Cogs.
2. Gparted is included in live DVD but not in installation.
3. Some applets need revision to work with cinnamon 2.0.13 and also to shed the link to “System Settings” (edit .js file).
4. No sound in aisleriot although the sound files are installed.
5. No system ready sound.
6. Video files do not show an image to identify them – fixed by installing nautilus, opening the files, then removing nautilus.
7. Skype sound fixed with specifying latency.
8. Occasional freezes after a click on “safely remove drive”.
9. The programs that work well (among many others): Crossover, Radiotray, Wacom Bamboo tablet, Timidity, Google-earth, VirtualBox, Lightscribe.
A delightful new release.
Many Thanks.
@PirateGRC
Please take a look at these applets:
http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/37
http://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/83
Download them from the site and unzip to the folder ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets
After that you can add them to the panel)
When downloading them through Cinnamon folders names of these applets become incorrect (“betterlock” instead of “betterlock@entelechy” and “lock” instead of “lock@dalcde”). Or you can just rename them)
And regarding hardware acceleration – how can I check if it is working for me?
Please try YouTube Center extension – https://github.com/YePpHa/YouTubeCenter/wiki/Developer-Version
This is development version, but the stable is rather buggy. In this extension you can enable hardware acceleration for flash – go to it’s settings (at he top of any YouTube page, then open tab called “Player”, then set “Flash WMode” to “Direct”.
Hope this will help you)
I have installed both the new Mate and Cinnamon editions into Virtualbox to test them.
Maybe it is me but I find Mate a bit more responsive. Things work just a bit faster than with the Cinnamon edition.
Both have some nice features so I am wondering why there are two different editions. Why not combine the best of the two into one edition? Yes, I know Linux is all about choices and that is nice, but why spend so much time in keeping two editions alive while it could easily be one, which would get double time so will also be “twice as good”.
Apart from that I would like to congratulate the Mint Team for yet another great edition. Thanks.
Re my comment 219 (Cinnamon in fallback after suspend). Yesterday’s big bunch of updates seems to have improved matters, but not fully cured it. I can also report that Cinnamon on Arch doesn’t seem to exhibit it at all.
TOF.
Hi – the only reason I am contemplating leaving lovely Linux is because there is no proper “File Exxplorer” which checks contents of file and not just name. Does this release have it?
@Clem re comment 430:
I did not do any update to a new release, either installed Petra. It was a regular update of Olivia. Dumped to CLI and no way to get MDM working. After logged in MDM was not running.
Re; comment 442
Yes I have this also, on opening banshee in mint 15 the speaker symbol in the lower right corner of the screen would change to a quaver and clicking on this would give me options to control the track being played and maximize banshee and quit banshee. In mint 16 I don’t have the maximize and quit buttons.
Another thing I have noticed that some others have commented on. The icon in the Mint Menu on the panel disappeared once I installed the proprietary AMD drivers from the repository. On the open drivers the icon is shown correctly.
Hello there,
Is there possibility of adding out of the box kanji/hiragana/katakana character input support? As the process of setting it up frustrating for older releases, when it comes to people not talented in using computer.
I don’t know if the following is a real (minor) bug or a configuration error. I have this issue since the last update using mintUpdate (23.11. or 24.11.).
The quick start launcher icons on the Cinnamon panel do not pulse any more when clicking on them.
Bug: compressor not working: when I compress any file to any directory the file-roller starts compressing but with no output.
Bug 450 edit: When I compress to desktop file-roller changes the directory to my home folder!
@411 above
My description of the error message was wrong.
Everyday without fail, my Linux Mint crashes and brings me back to the black screen with the message
nouveau E[Xorg[1187]] failed to idle channel 0;
nouveau E[PFIFO[0000:01:00.0] channel 4 [Xorg[1187]] unload timeout;
nouveau E[firefox[7376] failed to idle channel 0xcccc0000 [firefox[7376]]
so frustrating, I’ve tried restarting the MDM from there (sudo service mdm restart), but it never seems to work ;-(
When I open Nemo and right-click one of the devices (hard drive partitions or secondary hard drive) I get a long list of options which belong somewhere else, e.g “Change wallpaper”, “Send by Email”, “Create a new Launcher here” and more. When I mount the device, these options disappear and they do not reappear when the device is unmounted.

re: #449
Interesting comment. Curious as to if you may have updated your Mint 16-RC through the terminal and/or synaptic? On one of my (now 5) cinnamon installs, I did the Mint Update first, but then went to the dsit-upgrade via the terminal, and installed the additional items that were listed. And my icons do not pilse or blink as you originally posted.
However, I just completed a brand new install, and I only followed the Mint Update recommendations, and everything works fine, and the shortcuts still pulse.
Chromium opens as tiny non responsive window. Have to close then reopen and then the size is normal.
@ malligt / 454:
Thanks, that’s a good thought. By now I’m so far away from Windows that a fresh installation hasn’t reached my mind any more 😉
My way to Petra started in Olivia’s bash (sources.list, apt-get update, upgrade, dist-upgrade, …). After that I installed new updates via mintUpdate as soon as they were available.
I’ve planned to perform a new installation when Petra has the final release state.
@452
Looks like there is a known non-Mint related bug with Nouveau
From “https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-quantal/+bug/1097178”
and
“nouveau failed to idle channel 0xcccc0000”
..shame, I guess I have to install Nvidia’s proprietary drivers…
Hello,
this is a bug report for mint cinnamon rc 16:
when changing the inode/directory default setting in
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
to something like
[Default Applications]
inode/directory=kde4/dolphin.desktop
it generally works (eg when clicking on Places-Download in the menu or when opening an external HDD), but is ignored for the “Home”-Icon on the desktop.
Otherwise, I have just switched from Kubuntu to the RC and I am quite happy-thanks for the great work!
best regards
I encountered the major freezing bug that others have reported above. Whole desktop freezes, you can’t move the mouse and you are forced to do a hard shutdown. This has been a rare but persistent bug in Mint, and definitely a showstopper. I’ve seen this in the past with in Mint 14 and Mint 15 on several different machines, some of which were not my own, and reports are easy to find on Google. I really love Mint, but I’d like to see this fixed. I plan to switch my parents to Mint this Christmas, and this bug is the biggest concern for me. If you haven’t fixed this in git yet, please mark it as major.
During inputting password to the password box , search box, quick search box of the nemo
We have to change language from the keyboard layout (input method) , unless , it is unable to type password , searching contents, etc
it is the most important issue of non-english country , I think so.

re: 455
Updated:
After shutdown and restart:
My newest install (I mentioned earlier) of Mint 16-RC….the shortcuts (Firefox, terminal, etc) now do not pulse when selected.
Note that there is nothing additional on this install (No Skype, Chrome, Google Earth, Teamviewer, etc. ) other than Mint Updates (at the recommended default setting).
Question?
Is it possible to improve the primitive-appearance of the font quality within LibreOffice in Mint 16? THe key word being “within”
Example:
Open Writer in Mint 16. Open a drop-down menu…lets say for discussion here = “Tools”. Expand any choice within “Tools”
The letter spacing is awful.
Open Writer in Ubuntu 13.10, and duplicate the above.
Compare the 2 side-by-side.
The font quality of the LO Writer in Ubuntu looks sooooo much nicer.
Especially if you use LibreOffice alot.
I decided to try making a cinnamon theme, so I’m experimenting my way through a copy of Mint-X’s cinnamon.css, using Petra RC with current updates.
When I make gross changes to the colors and sizes in the cinnamon.css #tooltip code, the effects are as expected for everything except LO quickstart and mint update icons. When hovered, those two look as they did before the changes to the css. I haven’t added any items to the panel other than the libreoffice quickstarter, so I don’t know if this applies to other installable items.
There’s a bug when making custom keyboard shortcuts. I can properly create 2, but when I create a 3rd one, the 2nd one that was created becomes identical to the third shortcut.
this release in 64 bit has problems with running programs like Dofus, which uses adobe air which requires the ia32-libs to be installed properly from what I can tell. Is there any known fix for this or will we have to forgo some of our games and other useful programs on 64 bit systems. ( from what i can tell this issue isn’t present on 32 bit systems as the libraries are already there in these systems for us to build adobe air correctly. )
Regarding this…
Quote from MasterSlave:
“After installing Linux Mint Petra did not change the system language. Regional settings did not help. System language changed only after correction file /etc/default/locale. Change the line with LANG = “ru_RU.UTF-8″ to LANG = ru_RU.UTF-8 (without the quotes). Only after that the system russified.
P.S. I am sorry for my english.”
It is possible to improve language support? Seems it is can be done by simply remove quotation marks?
Frankly speaking, Mint 15 has problem with localization (including this Russian language, so users will need to use ‘tricks’ to properly localize their Mint 15 distro).
Could you please check this issue?
It would be nice for users of these topics also: http://lagadesk.deviantart.com/art/Quick-shot-308948015 🙂
I tested LM Cinnamon RC 16 32 bit this weekend for a short time. It looks great and has wonderful potential. A notable glitch I experienced was when I installed the Xiphos Bible app. I could not download any of the bibles or other supporting files in the download section for Xiphos. Only three bibles appeared for my choice to download from, all others did not show in the selection area and even then I was not able to select them to download. If I refreshed the software sources to rebuild the database everything would disappeared completely from the downloadable files section. I exited and re entered the modules download tab many times but had the same results.
Google-Chrome. I loaded Google-Chrome also. Chrome downloaded my profile and bookmarks but for some reason my profile data in Chrome became corrupted when I closed Chrome one time and I had to blow away my default profile to have Chrome re-download my profile again. Not sure if this was a LM 16 glitch or a Chrome glitch.
Besides that I did not see any other major quirks.
I decided to drop back to LM 15 for now and wait for the official LM 16 to be released. I will then try out LM 16 again and see how LM 16 reacts with Xiphos and Chrome.
Originally, with the initial Petra RC installed my battery showed 0% even when charged and my laptop would shut down, however after applying the latest updates it now contantly shows 100% even when its less than 100% – better than 0% and shutting down I guess but still not right.
I have even tried kernel 3.12 and it makes no difference, ie same issue.

How to get Update manager applet back once you remove it from panel?! It’s not in applet list.
I have a few issues with some of the Packages I installed in 15. Some of them no longer work in 16. I’d list the packages, but Since it seems to be a overall issue and not just a couple it wuld just take up space.
So my question is there an over all issue with the repositories or am is it just an issue unique to me?
I use Mint 15 XFCE 64bit, but installed Petra RC on another partition.
Issues:
– “Cinnamon just crashed. You are currently running in Fallback Mode”. When I restart Cinnamon, it crashes again right away. In Fallback mode, I cannot find a shutdown or a reboot button. When I subsequently try to shutdown via Terminal, PC hangs.
I installed Petra RC 64bit, NVIDIA-319 and NVIDIA-settings-319. Enabled Xinerama to be able to use 4 screens: two on NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 and two on NVIDIA GeForce 210. I had the same issue with Mint 15 Cinnamon 1.8 but hoped that Cinnamon 2.0 would be better.
(Mint 15 XFCE with proprietary NVIDIA drivers works, so that’s what I’m using now.)
– see #380-381 DrTeeth. I also have a boot delay of 56 seconds (!) waiting on TTY1 screen.
I have no idea what info I have to provide to debug these problems (I’m not even sure this is the right platform to file bugs). Q9550 processor, 8GB ram, EP45-UD3LR mobo, self built rig (2009).

Hi Mint-Team, all this is new with 16 RC 64 bit Cinnamon, did’nt have these issues with 15 64 bit Cinnamon (Samsung Laptop, Intel HD 4000 (hybrid ATI not used):
I had to delete my old /home profile in a seperate partition (no sound output, even no dummy, other issues like software rendering mode etc.).
Even with new profile (I don’t know what’s fixed now, because some things were mentioned before by others):
– 1 pixel border in fullscreen with Mint-X window decoration -> difficult to navigate (FF-addon all-in-one Sidebar)
– FF artifacts while scolling a few times up and down
– variety Desktop-Changer: no smooth transitions, but hard cuts (Cinnamon, Mint, X, Drivers?)
– Mint suspends too late (0% energy left)
– Expo animation sluggish
– “Enable mouseclicks with touchpad” option was not selected by default after installation.
I’ve found a bug. When I boot up with an external monitor plugged in the desktop freezes right after the mdm login with no panel bars, only desktop icons. I have a Lenovo U310 laptop.
Does someone else has this issue with their laptops?
After double-clicking an image from the Desktop or any folder from the file manager, the Image Viewer (3.8.2) opens the image zoomed at 99% or 98%, which makes it visually unclear/blurry. You will have to manually resize the Image Viewer window in order to see the image in 100%.
Using the mouse wheel to scroll up and down over the sound applet will decrease 5% most of the time both and and down, with one exception: from 100% the scroll down will drop the volume with 6% (to 94) instead of 5%.
Tested Mint 16 Cinnamon, installed on HDD, Toshiba Laptop L350(year-2008) runs perfect. Also, installed on HDD, Dell- Inspiron 660 with crappy Windows8. Smooth installation no problems from Secure Boot.
No freezing on System Apps. or rogue Processes. Start-up from sleep/standby is excellent.
Congratulations to Clement, Mint team and the Community on the this amazing OS.
Mint 16 is like a perfectly tuned Ferrari…no wonder why it’s the favorite among Google Team in Waterloo/kitchener, Ontario, Canada.
If I install the RC, will my OS upgrade to the final version by itself (just some updates)? or should I reinstall the final version as recommended by Mint team?
How long it’s needed to get the final version ready to download?
BUG: USB formatter doesn’t remount the drive after formatting it
i am trying mint16-cinnamon now on toshiba laptop665.it works well except the following notices:1-sometimes firefox freezes and dim for sometime when downloading videos using flashgot downloader, notably while opening more than one site.2-opposite to mint15-cinnamon,mint16-rc-64bit refuses the installation of adobeair which is imprssively required to install an islamic program called-Ayat-.so pls kindly try to bear this hope in mind and find a solution.
May ALLAH theALMIGHTY always grant YOU success ,help U and keep U in good health

I agree with #481.
All my images open at 99%, and I have to manually increase it to 100% to get the a sharp, crisp image.
Why?
1. Opened an image (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brihadeeswara_temple.jpg) in Firefox browser 2. Right click, Set as Desktop Background 3. A small window appears with options. 3. Click Set as Desktop Background button. 4. System freezes.
Please look into this.
Solved 344. Need to apt-get libgl1-mesa-dri:i386.
With the latest update (26 November) more translations are included, but many phrases are still not translatable:
In Date & Time, Regions (e.g. Europe) and Cities are not translated.
When doing administrative tasks, e.g. opening Login Screen and Users and Groups, the dialog box (Enter your password to perform administrative tasks) is not translated. For the “smaller” dialog box in Drivers and Software Sources, only the word “Password” is not translated.
In Sound Effects, the various options (e.g. Starting Cinnamon, Changing Workspace etc.) are not translated.
The font rendering looks way worse than in Olivia. I think it’s a problem with hinting. It’s back to that “out of focus” look from early versions of Ubuntu. Renderer is Mesa DRI intel 945G.
It’s becoming harder to install the gedit-plugins package for the Linux Mint version of gedit. Could the needed packages to install gedit-plugins be pulled into the Linux Mint 16 repository? I’ve attached them to below post also.
Currently these are the steps to install the gedit-plugins, needing to download packages from Ubuntu Lucid repository:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=122158&p=788466#p788466
Or perhaps the plugins can be included in the Linux Mint repackaged gedit package 😉
hi! will 16 RC upgrade to 16 seamlessly? i wanted to set up a friend’s computer but i’ve been holding off because, though i assume it will, it doesn’t say so explicitely anywhere i could find in the docs. please remember to clarify this with your releases if possible.
while on the subject, i’ve set up several friends on ubuntu. they are not very knowledgeable and they just need a good browsing platform, and maybe some support of a portable device or two. i would love to set up mint for them, trouble is, mint doesn’t upgrade. i’ve read why and i respect that. but i still think there should be a built in mechanism to set up the right repositories and upgrade in place. truth is, these people dont touch a line of configuration, and most dont even install software themselves, and updates would probably just work. maybe there should be a package to manually install that would bring the built in in-place upgrade functionality, so that it wouldn’t be default but still be there. just a thought.
(blush) … so when might we expect the final edition of Mint-16 Cinnamon? (pant, drool) ~~~ 8d;-/ Dan
Installed LM16 Cinamon on a Dell Optiplex 765 . It runs very smooth and fast faster than most Ubuntu based distros I’ve tried including eOS. No bugs so far (not a power user thou). I want to upgrade my hardware in particular to make it more suitable for gaming. What would you recommend for a graphic card that’s compatible with LM16? Thank you.
I found another bug:
When I go full screen in virtualbox then I click on minimize it will just stay full screen unless I click on exit fullscreen.
I didn’t have that bug/problem on Linux mint 15 XFCE so I know it is not my driver and that it is cinnamon.
Thanks 🙂
Upstream Ubuntu/kernel bug prevents install on several systems with Intel graphics. Symptoms are well known by now; Installer Grub shows, but then just a black screen. System actually boots but nothing is visible. Connecting an external screen is a workaround.
Upstream importance is High, I suggest including the in the final release.

Problems when using a USB boot:
* Firefox loaded but could not connect to any sites (but I could ping sites from terminal)
* Tried “Effects” in control center: Each time I selected a new miliseconds time, the number of choices was reduced, until only 250 milliseconds was available
An incredibly fast window manager, compared with Ubuntu. Thank you!
Ran a live session on my Dell Inspirion laptop and Touchpad tapping was disabled by default. I could change it in settings but this should have been enabled by default. Is this intentional or a bug?
Also, i find, acceleration is a tough beast to control, cursor runs off.
Future feature request: Could not find a way to test settings for trackpad as we have for mouse settings?
У меня cinnamon1.8 тормозит.Видеокарта 64 mb,оперативка 700 MB. Что не так?
i am planing to upgrade my linux mint. is it possible to upgrade from this release candidate to stable release that will come?
Live version should have screensaver disabled because if it locks the screen there is no way to unlock it. I started installing mint 16 and left it for a while. When I came back screensaver was on and locked and the only way to unlock it was to type a password. It didn’t accept empty password and I had to reset the computer and to start installation again. Other than that it works like a charm 🙂
I’m having issues with the cinnamon version. When playing something in a flash plugin sound breaks after waking up from suspend. I’m unable to find a solution.. Iǘe tried setting up pulseaudio as the default bucket via a asound.conf file. I’ve had some success with gnash but all other flash plugins have the same issue.
On Dell XPS-12 boots with black screen (backlight off). This is same as Ubuntu 13.x, so I guess it’s not really a Mint bug, rather kernel/driver problem. Interestingly Mint KDE boots with screen brightness ok.
As others mentioned, the 12h/24h clock and date is a mess all over. I live in Germany, and want to have some local (European) settings like date format, 24h clock, day/month/year date, currency in Euro etc, but system language English – damn near impossible combination. Some of it I can correct manually, but not all – eg. still don’t know how to fix lockscreen clock to 24h.
Can’t install new desklets at all. I select one or more, and hitting install button does nothing.
Other than that, great system. I especially appreciate the addition of tools to format USB drives. Now just ironing out the above issues, adding Wayland and it will be perfect!
Hey guys! I just tried LM 16 Cinnamon 64bit for a few days now and I have encountered one issue with regards to laptops. When I closed the lid on my laptop last night and tried to bring it back out of hibernation I simply couldn’t do it! I have seen other people on this page also complaining about this issue so I’m sure it’s an issue related to LM16. What I had to do was remove the battery and keep the power button pressed down to train any power that was still in the laptop and put the battery back in until I was lucky enough to get it to boot up again. I have just reinstalled LM15 for the time being anyway. I’m using an Acer Aspire E1-571
Apart from that issue I found LM16 to be quite a smooth and elegant operating system! But I can’t say I’ll be using it until this hibernation/sleep mode issue is resolved!

This seems to be intended behaviour. I hate it, too, but according to the reaction on github…
https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/2507
… it will probably stay that way. :-/
– flash plugin and java applet does not work on chromium
– software manager and update manager fails to install some packages form repositories (“broken packages”, “check internet connection message”)
– System Load Indicator behaves strange in tool bar
Crap. Rolling back to 15 🙁
I have the same problem of Anand (#469): on my HP Pavilion Entertainment PC DV6 the touchpad tapping (for simulating the left click of the mouse) is disabled by default. This can be a serious problem for a new user! Please enable it by default, thanks 🙂
P.S.: Sorry, in my previous post I referred to the post #496, not #469.

Yes Mint 16RC will seamlessly upgrade to LM16 stable cause all you have to do is install the released updates. Most Linux OS systems are build that way to upgrade, except some Commercial Servers.
About the friends that need a good Web Browsing platform, Linux Mint will be perfect.
The way LM is build to upgrade the way it is, for complete secure seamless upgrade of Config. files for users/clients. That is coming from the Head of the LM project itself, Clement. Read this short and precise answers from Clement for the reason “why” the system is build this way. Link: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2
@clem
Hello. I got some language updates today when i started the computer that mixed up some translations that was fine before.I am using Cinnamon 16 64-bit and Swedish as default language. The affected items seems to be the mouse over popups on panel items, and also some mixups inside the default panel applets, the default names on workspaces and also inside the menu “Lock screen,Logout,Quit” are now shown in English when mouseover.Other than that Mint Cinnamon 16 looks and works great and feels like a giant leap forward from previous version. This is the best OS in the world by far at this moment so thank you&team for giving us this beauty of an OS !.
nemo/cinnamon updates are top notch, thank you. nemo’s info-field-width twitching seems to have subsided!
couple things I notice here that need help…
1 when searching for a settings menu from the mint menu (such as ‘mouse settings’) it will select/open the ubuntu(gnome?) settings menu for it, whilst the cinnamon settings app is separate and allows conflicting settings. Might be nice to link those to the cinnamon-settings instead. I was going nuts trying to figure out why natural scrolling was still active…
2 some weirdness happening with updating the desklet/applet/theme indexes. seemed to lock up, waited 2 minutes and it wouldn’t complete, had to kill.
3: Was feeling adventurous, tried and failed miserably to do an in-place upgrade from Maya to Petra (point apt sources forward, dist-upgrade, default all prompts) Dependency hell ensued. It’s possible it had something to do with having to kill apt-get & dpkg in the middle of the upgrade (cinnamon-scrensaver locked, the package got forked in the installation process, couldn’t get a prompt to log back into cinnamon) Tried running the dpkg –configure -a without any rebooting, dependency lockup. Fresh install it is, it’s only an old toss-around laptop anyway.
in place upgrade worked perfectly from Olivia to Petra on my production machines though! 😀
3.5: I’d really like to know what you guys did to rid of the ‘scanning for brfs’ routine at boot. I must’ve missed something in the new configuration files, have no problem with updating that manually.
Other than that, LOTS of really good progress Clem & Co… Thank you.
@ OK Everyone…
Let take a fresh breath for a moment….
Please read over these 515 postings, and if you discover yourself in multiple posts, Please DO NOT re-post….
We know by now that dropbox, google-earth 64 bit and Teamviewer (all of them work 100% by the way), and MORE…. needs ….blah blah blah…and oh, I just upgraded from Mint 10.14.26.57, and my stuff now doesn’t work? really?…..but we thank you for your interest…c’mon man….
Sometimes I feel it’s “feeding time at the shark tank” on all these postings.
And again,
If you discover your post is in a “majority of 1” …ie hibernation, flash player, chromium…mintstick…it all works by the by….
TAKE A BREATH OF MINT AIR….and relax…..
Suggestion —Go back, consider doing a fresh mint 16 install, do a 5sum of your download FIRST the do allthe updates before you re-post….because you quite possibly are now in a minority of one.
Please —-Take the time and presence to self-examine your own personal system and/or hardware…
Okay, ready now? Are you RELAXED?
Good!
Now let move forward…
PATIENCE, PATIENCE PATIENCE…get the theme yet? Give the Mint team some well deserved SPACE HERE….
LESSON:
Let Mint-16 RC team come to you….that’s what a RC is really about….
Fresh Kernel stuff — plus add in more junk like — oh boy, I now have kernel version 3.146.17, and exorbitantly new and downloaded video drivers — c’mon man….are you kidding me?
Patience, let the mint-come-to-you….
It will all work out in the “final”…
PATIENCE is your key…
Thanks for reading.
Happy Thanksgiving form the USA. Remember in linux mint exactly what you are thankful for.
I do.
I’m just an end user, not associated with the Mint team in any way, and still I was just about to post something like this. I think too many people don’t quite get what a “RELEASE CANDIDATE” is.
You’re not supposed to install an RC and try to use it as your main system. Its only for public testing in order to help the programmers bug-hunt faster than they could by themselves.
Only run an RC on a spare machine or in a VM.
