Hi everyone,
Many thanks for your donations and support.
Here are the news for this month.
Important Firefox Update
On March 14, 2025, a root certificate used by Firefox will expire.
When this happen, Firefox version 128 (and lower) will suffer significant issues related to:
- configuration
- add-ons
- signed content
- DRM-protected media playback
To avoid these problems, make sure you’re up to date in your Update Manager. Press Refresh and apply all updates.
This is important for security reasons, and in this case it’s also important to avoid regressions.
Firefox 135.0.1 is available on all supported Linux Mint releases.
Firefox 135.0.1 was also sent as an emergency update to the following discontinued releases:
- Linux Mint 19.3, 19.2, 19.1 and 19
- LMDE 5
- LMDE 4
If you are using a discontinued version of Linux Mint (20 or older) or LMDE (5 or older) please upgrade or reinstall Linux Mint.
For more information on upgrades read https://linuxmint-user-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/upgrade.html.
Website Maintenance
The backend for the main Linux Mint website was completely rewritten and containerized. This allowed us to minimize the interactions between the site and the hosting server, making it easier to upgrade the server and maintain/develop the website on different computers.
Sometimes we make a tiny little change and everybody loves it. This time it’s the opposite. It took a lot of time to get this done, yet nobody will be able to tell the difference.
The URLs were kept unchanged to avoid 404 errors.
Stripe was integrated and is now fully supported. Donations made with Stripe are now automatically handled and included in our stats.
Cinnamon App Menu
Work started on a redesign of the Cinnamon application menu.
This project is led by Joseph in our development team.
Here’s a preview of what it currently looks like:
Desktop and Release Stats
Our Datadog stats show us the following breakdown for our different desktops:
Note that these stats reflect downloads over the last 7 days, not usage.
Cinnamon represents 60% of our downloads, followed by Xfce and MATE at roughly 20% each.
The following chart gives us a breakdown per release:
Linux Mint 22.1 represents 70%, followed by LMDE 6 at 14%, Mint 22 at 8% and Mint 21.3, still relevant also at around 8%.
As previously announced, Linux Mint 22.x will not have an EDGE release. Starting with Linux Mint 22.2, the HWE kernel will be used.

You guys leave no room for complaints 😀 Good job. This change will roll out during Linux mint 21.2 release i presume?
Hi Vivek,
Yes, sorry for the confusion. The new menu and anything we preview like this is planned for the next release.
Hi Clem! No problem. It looks awesome.
Stripe as alternative – at least! Thanks!
Hello, and thank you for the news and thank you for your work.
1) ‘Repartition’? That is either the wrong word or else some technical use of the word with which I am unfamiliar.
2) I think that Timeshift needs some work: it is a critical tool and there are bugs reports open for it that have to do with what seem like serious problems.
Hi, I use Mint on many computers and I am very happy with it.
Will the menu include settings to hide the logout and lock screen buttons?
Currently, on computers used by less aware users, I hide these buttons by editing the file /usr/share/cinnamon/applets/menu@cinnamon.org/applet.js but unfortunately every now and then an update restores the buttons.
Best regards
Currently there is an option in the settings to allow hiding that bottom bar in the menu. So that would hide those buttons and probably cover your use case.
Great job as always!. One small thing I wish you would simplify would be having to use two tabs to download and then activate themes/actions/applets/desklet/extensions. For new users it can be a bit confusing. The new menu looks great, hopefully it is customizable and has the option to expand the menu as a grid (like Deepin or the Cinnamenu applet).
There is no option to have a grid view. The idea is not to make a replacement for some of the excellent menus on the cinnamon spices site. Those are typically always going to have more options and customizations than what Mint uses as it’s default.
I LOVE the Cinnamenu applet! I hope it continues to be supported for a very long time. I was also wishing Linux Mint would incorporate it as their menu, but it looks like they are going a different way with that.
Cinnamenu is the best. I like the grid with favorites. So useful to press a button and open one of those, instead of everything being put on the desktop or taskbar. At least when you have a lot of installed programs. I wish that was an option in the default menu.
Thank you for developing Linux Mint. Linux right now is in a difficult situation with the Wayland, Libadwaita, Flatpak and all, and I hope you’ll manage it well. Are you planning on switching to GTK 4?
I have switched to MATE myself, but I appreciate your work on Cinnamon, even though I don’t really understand some design decisions like the modals.
Also, is the default font being switched to Inter?
Screenshots that I supplied are always showing the inter font because it’s what I personally use. As far as I know, there are no plans for Mint to make that switch.
Hi Clem
Given the current furore over the changes to the default Firefox licensing terms, does this apply to the version of Firefox that comes with the various versions of mint?
On a different note regarding the new Cinnamon application menu, will it be possible to show the favourites on the left just as icons without text as at present?
Good hint Nigel, the German community is not amused about the direction Mozilla/Firefox is going in recent times. Just to keep things in mind.
The new Cinnamon App Menu is looking fantastic, reminding me of old times from other OS’ yet feeling new and useful, looking forward to it very much!
Hi Nigel,
Yes, this issue affects Firefox 128 and older on any operating system or any distribution.
If there’s one thing people should update regularly for security reason it is their browser. We’re communicating about this issue because it will cause functional regressions, but I really urge everybody to apply available updates. Most people don’t run server software on their computer, it’s important they update everything of course to patch known vulnerabilities, but one of the most important and tangible ways for people to welcome malware on their computer is to neglect web browser updates and browse malicious sites.
With the addition of TOS in Firefox, I think it would be useful for Mint to have a second browser pre-installed (e.g. Librewolf/Zen/Brave). Or perhaps have the option to install them as a system package in the Software Manager (not everyone uses or likes the flatpak format).
There’s choice with browsers: https://infolib.re/blog/navigateurs-web/
Firefox could be replaced or another added.
Hi Clem
Many thanks for the reply, sorry, I did understand your post about the certificate expiration. I was referring to the new terms of service/privacy policy that firefox is introducing, apparently saying they will have total rights and access to all your data and can do what they like with it, and they have removed the “we never sell your data” and such terms that used to exist. Apparent they say this does not apply to the source code, but to their packaging of it. There are many youtube videos about this. Best wishes
Dear Clem, thank you for your hard work and I appreciate it!
Clem, how many times have I asked about this and I have unsubscribed about it in GitHub, but I repeat again: When will the metadata editor appear in the Nemo file manager, in the file properties? I think this is a very necessary feature and its absence – is a global and fatal flaw! Fix this missed error!
And yet, we need another necessary function in Nemo – this is putting passwords on any folder and file is also a disadvantage without this. This function is needed to create and maintain the security and privacy of the files themselves.
You can put password on files (not folder) with Nemo-Seahorse, but there’s a bug since Linus Mint 21.3.
https://github.com/linuxmint/nemo-extensions/issues/511
You can use symetric encryption software too: https://github.com/volar-is/volaris-gui, https://veracrypt.fr/en/Home.html, https://mhogomchungu.github.io/zuluCrypt/, https://mhogomchungu.github.io/sirikali/, https://www.aescrypt.com/.
And http://qccrypt.free.fr too.
The new applications menu looks nice. Its styling resembles libadwaita, with the left lighter part from top to bottom and the shut down/log out buttons on round fields.
Cinnamon is getting better and better. If only Nemo worked faster. One example: after thumbnail previews of image files are generated in Thunar, when the folder with them is opened on any later occasion, the thumbnails are displayed instantly, they are not regenerated. Nemo creates them each time a folder is opened if their number is higher than 160 or so. So, with hundreds of pictures in a folder, the situation is rather disturbing. Why not improve things when other parts of Cinnamon are getting so much polish?
Anyway, Mint is great as always.
Yes! I truly love Nemo but I’ve been noticing over the years that it has become heavier and taking more time to load (2 seconds to start and 6! seconds to open its preferences menu on my old Intel NUC) while having some important (to my personal use) features removed like having the ability to use custom icons on your bookmarks, which immensely improve my visual navigation on them.
Comparatively, Caja seems very similar but somewhat more feature rich (i.e. the ability to use custom icons on bookmarks) yet it loads much much faster than Nemo.
Nemo sure does need some deserved love.
The new menu would look better if the square area with a picture of the user was removed.
I already use most of the vertical space, without inserting a selection of nemo folder icons.
Change for changes sake is not usually a good idea.
Dear Clem and hard working Team,
One question and one kind request:
Regarding this issue with Firefox, how will it affect the ESR version? (I’m using the Mozillateam PPA, which is obviously out of the control of the Mint Team).
In the near future while this all settles down, do you recommend using the official Mint Firefox version?
And about the new Mint Menu on Cinnamon, it seems very sober as all the work I’ve been seen lately from Joseph. My old sore eyes sincerely thank him.
Regarding the Favorites left side column, could we have an option to toggle between the way it currently works by just having the icons without the application name, and the modern way with the names as it is being proposed? Nothing wrong with this new way, but personally it becomes visually cluttered to my eyes and the current way strikes my personal balance of information being presented on the screen. Those are my favorites, my brain already knows who they are.
Cheers and keep up the good work for Mint 22.2.
Hi Bruno,
This issue is not specific to Linux Mint. It affect all builds of Firefox older than 128, on any OS.
The Mint build is exactly the same as Mozilla’s but it contains our distribution.ini, which allows us to monetize our traffic in accordance with the partnership we have with Mozilla. I do recommend you use it and keep it up to date.
We don’t use ESR but it’s also affected for any version lower than 115. More info at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/root-certificate-expiration.
Thanks for clarifying Clem.
I’m above the minimal ESR version, so I’m good.
Cheers.
Also check https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox/ for vulnerabilities.
Also maybe you guys also need to redesign that start menu icon to little bit “colorful”, not boring black and white but like on windows (7 maybe?) icon start menu
You can set any icon you want for the start menu in the preferences. The current one looks good as a default.
I agree with Joseph! Start menu icon can be set to anything. it’s highly customisable.
Hello Clem, I have a question, will the new menu that they are designing be the same or will there be the option to continue using the current one that I like more, on the other hand I think it is time for a facelift to the application icons, some look a little old and lack a little color since they are gray like the icons of the disk, sound, network application, etc.
Hi Angel, it’s the same applet being modified, not a new one.
Thanks for the reply Clem, another question: in the menu that they are modifying, will there be the option to customize which folders and favorite applications will appear on the left of the menu? Will it also be possible to hide the names of the applications and folders and leave only the icons?
Any chance of addressing the annoying mint menu behaviour that happens when you open the menu and immediately see the app you are looking for on the right side. You would then start moving the mouse towards the app but because the mouse moves over the categories it will also change the selected category and now the app you were going for is suddenly gone.
Also some alternative full screen mode for the menu would bee a cool addition.
Hi Clem, in my case I prefer the current Cinnamon menu, the new menu is also welcome, I would like at least the current menu to be left as an application that can be installed for those of us who are used to that menu.
I agree. I prefer the menu as it is.
me too.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to change the current Cinnamon menu, it’s part of the desktop’s identity, the new menu looks like Mate’s and I don’t like it very much, I find it very overloaded, I feel that if they put it by default the identity of the Cinnamon desktop is being lost.
I strongly dislike that menu redesign. All those shortcuts belong in the file browser, not there.
Concerning the new menu: I do not like its design. It occupies space with shortcuts that are meaningless for me, because I do not use folders such as Music, Pictures, Videos. I have my own way of organizing things.
Also, putting the user’s name and logo on top of it is also a waste of space for me, since I am single user.
In short: I prefer things as they are. If Mint wants to create a new menu, fine, as long as it is customizable and I can decide what shortcuts I need or not. Ortherwise I will stay with the current version.
I’m with Luis on this. I don’t use the “standard” home folders. Even in Nemo I swapped out the Bookmarks to point to the directories I actually use. Effectively my home dir is just for config files. And I’d rather have a menu option “Places” than take up a whole column with directory shortcuts. Besides Nemo, there’s like a gazillion applets that give this functionality. Why duplicate it?
Now what would be a KILLER feature would be having multiple levels for the programs list. Thus I could have subcategories/subfolders. Something like: Office->LibreOffice, Office->Accounting, etc. There are “hints” in the current menu editor that it’s *possible*, but then the menu never adapts.
Will Thunderbird Desktop Release Channel Will Become Default in March 2025 in Linux Mint?
https://blog.thunderbird.net/2025/02/thunderbird-desktop-release-channel-default-download/
Thank you
While I do appreciate the updated look of the new menu style, I struggle to understand the purpose. The additions seem unnecessary. The places links are already present in Nemo, so I can’t imagine a viable use case for them being in the menu as well. The user image might be ok for a multi-user system, but again, that’s already taken care of by the user applet, which allows the user menu to be a removable option for those that don’t need it.
If I were to redesign the menu, I would personally prefer something more similar to Cinnamenu – something with expanded and customizable search options and different view styles (list vs. icons). And, sure, maybe include these new proposed changes as well, but as options.
Not that my personal preferences necessarily matter to the rest of the Linux Mint user base.
The places links are unnecessary. I really don’t want to see them in the main menu.
Clem, a couple of questions: have you thought in the near future to leave the new Cinnamon theme as the default theme ?. Will the new All-in-one applet have a button to enable/disable night mode and energy profiles?
Hi,
at first I liked the new app menu more than the current one, but now I think it’s too verbose. Too many elements call for attention.
And I’m wondering if Linux distros, Mint included, will still ship Firefox after the recent controversy. Perhaps after some code modification? I love Firefox but now I have serious doubts about it being my default browser.
The new mint menu: As long as the left bar can be resized and the previously “places” taken out, it will be fine I guess. For the purpose of having enough space for favorites, instead of forced “places” that were just fine under it’s own category.
I don’t think it will be resizable, it seems fixed to me. But hopefully I’m wrong.
I hoped there would be some further polish on NightLight. The repository redshift gave good information like color temperature, location and percentage of day cycle. Also it’s default red light was less aggressive. It seams to me NightLight is usable only on its minimum value, while not getting any of the info. Feels like that should be an easy and big improvement. Also Screensaver should have been renamed to LockScreen a long time ago. Or adjusting the “media keys OSD” show value or size. There is definitely allot of space for polish on the currently existing experience. Still my favorite distribution that I always recommend 🙂
i would like to report a significant bug. recently there was a firmware update from ubuntu, which was also installed in linux mint, at least you could select it in the update manager. since then i have a complete freeze in the system after 2 minutes of playing counterstrike, where only a reset helps. the system also freezes without playing. no matter which kernel i choose the same problem, it was due to the firmware update.
and here i would like to point out that it would probably be better to switch to debian in the long run, since canonical / ubuntu are global companies that are not free from political decisions either. and if they like it, they could simply paralyze a system like linux mint through faulty updates. i also doubt more and more that canonical really maintains ubuntu properly.
anyway, my system is no longer ntuzable and i will now switch everything to lmde even if it is outdated, but the freeze today destroyed my whole working day
Update: I have the same problem under LMDE. Everytime Freeze after a while when playing Counterstrike. So its either a Countrstrike Problem, a Steam Problem (used Flatpak, trying now Package) or Cinnamon Problem.
Before i had no freezes.
This is why you need to use Timeshift, instead of nuking your system and reinstalling / switching OSes.
Then you can block the offending update in Update Manager.
Regarding the App Menu:
I understand this is hard work made with love, but i feel like Cinnamenu already does everyhing well…
Just my two cents
