Hi everyone,
Before we start with the news, I’d like to thank all the people who donate, sponsor and contribute in various ways to our project. Many thanks to all of you!
Note: The features which are previewed in this post are planned for upcoming releases. They are not available right now.
Searching for files in Nemo
The Nemo file manager was improved.
Its search functionality was enhanced. A new filter was added to find files using regular expressions matching their filenames.
Cinnamon in Wayland
We’re working on adding support for keyboard layouts and input methods to Cinnamon in Wayland.
Will this be included in the next release? Hopefully.
It’s functional but it’s not fully ready yet. Although it’s great news for Wayland compatibility, it can impact toolkit compatibility and input methods for Asian languages. We need a little bit more time to finalize it and properly test it.
OEM Support in LMDE
LMDE 7, which will be based on the next version of Debian Stable, will come with full support for OEM installations.
Thanks to OEM installs, Linux Mint can be pre-installed on computers which are sold throughout the World. It’s a very important feature and it’s one of the very few remaining things which wasn’t supported by LMDE.
OEM stands for “Original Equipment Manufacturers”. It’s used to refer not only to manufacturers but to any company big or small which sells computers. This feature is also used by individuals who either donate or sell their computers.
When you prepare a computer to be sold, you don’t know its future user. You can’t select the username or the password. Big companies might not even know the user’s language, timezone or keyboard layout. So this feature allows the system to be pre-installed on the computer, without selecting user details.
These details are later asked to the user via a first-run wizard when the computer is turned on.
CJS
We’re changing how we handle version numbers for the JavaScript engine that powers the Cinnamon desktop.
Previously, our JavaScript interpreter (CJS) shared the same version number as the Cinnamon desktop environment and was only updated when Cinnamon itself was updated.
Moving forward, CJS will be versioned according to the Mozilla JavaScript engine it uses, and we’ll update it independently from Cinnamon. This means:
- Updates can happen more frequently and efficiently
- New JavaScript engine improvements can be added without waiting for a full Cinnamon release
- The desktop environment can work with multiple versions of the JavaScript engine
This change will especially benefit Linux distributions like Debian and Ubuntu, making it easier for them to ship Cinnamon without having to maintain multiple versions of the Mozilla JavaScript engine.

Yes! OEM installation being added to LMDE7. Best news this week. Thank You.
Clem/team,
Good work on Nemo, that’s a nice little improvement.
On Nemo, not sure if others have raised this before with respect to Nemo, but when you try to save a file, the dialog box does not put the cursor in the correct place (in my opinion). Maybe it’s a default setting that i inadvertently turned on. Anyway, something for the forums, just came into my head when the news mentioned Nemo.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to see how the new upcoming X-server release will improve Linux Mint ever further!

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/merge_requests/1852
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/merge_requests/1636
@Gerry, I may be wrong but I think you mean saving a file from an application rather than from Nemo. If you mean the dialog box that a File Save brings up in an application, that will usually be produced by GTK. And yes the cursor is in the search field despite the filename field being highlighted. That is a pain in the rear, but GTK is outside Mint’s control.
Cordial saludo.
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=240553
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=328508
Se que en algun momento habra una herramienta grafica para esta situación. Gracias.
Hello Clem and team, keep up the great work!
This does not affect me, but I see posts on the Forums regarding the new modal dialogs in Cinnamon to enter passwords.
Some users don’t like that it takes full focus and disables the rest of the screen.
For some, it is too reminiscent of the annoying Windows UAC dialogs.
For others, a more legitimate usability issue arises, they can’t use Virtual keyboard / Onboard to enter the password (or don’t know how to, if it’s possible).
Most likely that change is due to security reasons. The reason UAC dialogs on Windows “disable” the rest of the screen is because the system needs to make the dialog secure by preventing other programs from intercepting the password as it’s being entered, so it creates an entirely new and secure desktop object that only the system can access. I’m sure that’s the same reason Linux Mint does the same.
Makes sense, I just thought I should mention it on behalf of others.
It’s still an issue for those who need Accessibility help to enter their passwords I think.
I am relieved that you will be including the OEM support in LMDE 7, as it was not in LMDE6. The OEM process makes for a great way for preparing LMDE for giving away, or referbishing machines for those seeking LinuxMint. I and friends have found LMDE to sometimes be the only up to date Linux Mint release that will properly function on some machines.
Clem, this is all good and wonderful, of course. But when will there be a metadata edit function in the Nemo file manager property itself? How many times have I tried to write here and write to you on Github, zero Please, I hope that you will hear my requests, this feature is very necessary in the file manager. For example, I need to edit collections of North Korean music albums, but I have to do all this through Audacity. Clem, listen to my important requirements, I offer useful ideas!
Wow, so humble. “Listen to me, my ideas are the best and MUST be heard!”
The Mint developers work for free and in their own time. How about chilling a little instead of being a Karen and asking for VIP treatment?
Editing music file metadata doesn’t need to be done through Audacity. There are several tag/metadata editors available, just search Software Manager. Often, for any function we need, there are several programmes which work in different ways, find one which suits you. This is the Linux way!
If you need to edit metadata for files in music albums, try Ex Falso or Puddletag. Or search for a music player which has editing built into it. I use Quod Libet.
Hi Ioann
I do understand where you are coming from and do not disagree that it would be nice to have the feature in Nemo but as Tony U.K. said there are other options. Personally I use Easytag (in the software manager) and find it very simple to use. You can add/remove album covers too.
Have you tried the ‘exiftool’ command line tool – it will remove/change/display metadata for virtually any file. It’s highly complex if you want to handle more than a few file types – but you could spend a few months using it to provide a helper function for nemo.
Would save you sending all those multiple instructions to the Mint team.
Once again thank you very much for the constant effort to improve LM. Some questions/ideas: Will it be possible that for LM 22.2 the new Cinnamon theme will be the default theme? – Could you add in Mintinstall the option to show the content of search results and categories by alphabetical order and/or rating ? – In the future we could see the use of tabs in Xreader (like qpdfview) ? – Could we see a second browser installed by default as an alternative to Firefox?
Best regards
@Seba It is so easy to install a different browser, just add what you like. Personally, the removal of Firefox is one of the first things I do on a new installation these days. Each to their own choice of course.
Hello,
Can we hope to have the choice of installing either init.d or systemd when installing LMDE7 for those who don’t want to use systemd ?
We can choose our desktops, our software, etc. The choice between init.d and systemd should also belong to the end users !!!
If that were the case, there’s a good chance I’d return to Linux Mint…
Regards
Instead of adding a metadata editor in the Nemo file manager, as in XFCE’s Thunar, they suggest installing a third-party metadataу editor. You will not be able to gain a large audience in Linux with such tips, this function is necessary for the file manager, such a function is available in Thunar from of course, there is the same third-party extension for Nautilus from GNOME, but this feature is still not in Nemo and it bothers me + a significant drawback of the Nemo.
I’m really excited to try the Nemo search improvements!
“Thanks to OEM installs, Linux Mint can be pre-installed on computers which are sold throughout the World. ”
YES! SPREAD LMDE AROUND THE WORLD! LETS GOOOOOOO!
Thanks Clem and Team. Great People.
@Tony W
That’s exactly what i meant,
thanks for articulating that correctly for me
Wonderful to see LMDE finally gaining those “little nothing” life quality additions that make users happy. Congrats to Clem and the Team for that!
In these strange days when Cannonical is simply going out of GNU Utils in favor of, supposedly, Rust and quite likely just another private sort of software, their credibility is likely reaching the 0 point within the Linux community, oh well, if it had not with previous controversies like the Snap store one! Mint needs and deserves a newer, better and far more solid base, which given the circumstances, my best bet is that only Debian can to provide.
Permit me just a final note: The other day I watched some pretty recent videos about comparing the performance levels of those most mainstream Linux Desktop Environments and my main conclusion is that nowadays there is not that big of a difference between, at least the 4 biggies in the industry (Gnome, XFCE, KDE and Cinnamon) once they tend to be in the less than 10% margin range from one another, in most cases far less than that, which ultimately makes the choice between them to be basically driven on the likes and needs of the beholder user… This and the fact that basically all computers sold from 2012 onward, or if you prefer computers with up to 13 years old right now, were sold or then upgraded to 8Gb of RAM, there seems to be no need to support lower than those specs PC’s anymore from 2026 onward on the main new Mint releases. With that in mind, my humble suggestion to the team would be: Give full support on both safety and functionality updates to the current 22 series for the MATE and XFCE versions till they reach EOL by 2029. Move forward to a full Debian base for the Cinnamon version and make it the unique flavor from 2026 onward, probably with 2 editions: a “Solid Rock” one based on Debian Stable for most of the users, and a “Rolling Rocks” one based on Testing or whatever Debian rolling release may have.
Thanks for what a wonderful system Mint has been for me since 2012 and highly likely it will be for the next many decades to come!…
