Hi everyone,
First of all, thank you for your support and your donation! And many thanks to all the people involved in helping Linux Mint.
Here’s a preview of what we worked on recently, and which will be featured in the next release.
Sensors
A page dedicated to sensors was added to the System Reports tool.
This page lists all the sensors detected on the computer and refreshes their value automatically.
This is typically used to keep an eye on fan speed and temperatures. It can be useful to troubleshoot power modes, battery lifetime, etc.
The list of sensors depends on the manufacturer. Some computers don’t show a lot of information, some do.
Cinnamon Screensaver and Wayland
The new Cinnamon screensaver is ready, and there’s a lot of good news coming along with it!
Until now Cinnamon had a dedicated screensaver program called “cinnamon-screensaver”, which ran alongside it as a separate process within the session. This screensaver was written in Python and in C, it used the GTK toolkit, and it was designed for Xorg.
It looked nice and it worked pretty well but it had issues:
- It didn’t work in Wayland
- The transition between the desktop and the screensaver was not smooth
- Despite a modern codebase, it was complex in terms of design, mainly because it inherited features from the GNOME 2 era, which are largely unnecessary nowadays
The new screensaver isn’t a separate process. It’s Cinnamon itself handling things directly, locking the screen natively with its own toolkit and widgets.
Here’s another screenshot of it, with some of the UI improvements Joseph is working on.
The first thing you’ll notice is the native look and the smooth animation.
The biggest gain of course is the full compatibility with Wayland. Whether or not we want to default to Wayland in the future is a different topic, but we certainly want to have the option on the table. With this new screensaver, the next Cinnamon release will be Wayland compatible.
Screensavers are very important. They need to look good, they need to work well, and they cannot under any circumstance fail to protect the user’s privacy. If the screensaver was to crash, the session still needs to be locked. There’s an extra process dedicated to hiding the screen when that happens. It worked well with cinnamon-screensaver but it took a lot of testing to make sure it did. It works well with the new screensaver also, but it will take time to make sure it’s tested properly both in Xorg and in Wayland. For that reason, even though cinnamon-screensaver will eventually be discontinued, the next Cinnamon will be able to work with either the new or the old screensaver.
Now here’s a little anecdote from our development team. Although the native screensaver has a much smoother transition than the old one, we encountered the very same papercut bug we’ve had for decades on the old screensaver: What looked like a random race condition, which results in the session being briefly visible before the screensaver appears on resume or lid-open. We tried and failed to fix this issue for years, and as we worked on the new screensaver we just realized what was causing it. It’s fixed now, not only for the new screensaver, but after extensive testing also as an update to the old one….
.. so what changed? Why couldn’t we fix this before? The answer is complexity. When we’re dealing with something that happens all the time, even when we don’t understand why it happens, we can change things and see if it continues to happen. This makes it easy to find the cause, and once we’ve a solution, to make sure the solution works. When the bug is random and only happens “sometimes” we’ve no reliable way or finding the cause or testing the solution. This was a random bug in a scenario which involved:
- The window-manager
- The screensaver
- Xorg
- Logind
It could happen on suspend or hibernation. It could also happen as the result of a timeout, which could lock the screen, or not, or a lid-close event. We handle about 6 different overlapping timers for maybe 4 different ways of turning off the screen, starting the screensaver, locking it, suspending… it’s a huge mess. I didn’t try to calculate how many different scenarios are at play here, but there are way more than just “dozens” 🙂
While I was testing the new screensaver I came across the issue again. This time the window-manager and the screensaver were one and the same, so 3 components instead of 4. We weren’t asking Xorg to stack a new window also… and we managed to reproduce the issue with just locking the screen (i.e. with no logind intervention). This really helped pin-point the issue. In the end it had to do with power-saving and asking Xorg to turn off the screen. For some reason this makes Xorg fail to render events, so even though the screen is indeed locked, the frames don’t update on the screen just before it goes off, and it all happens later after the screen turns on again. It’s a rendering bug.
This is a good lesson for us because it shows us how supporting too many niche features and too many use cases can lead to critical bugs which affect everyone for a decade. I couldn’t explain in layman terms what each of the timers do in the Cinnamon screensaver and power preferences, and that’s a problem. We inherited these configuration options from a time when people had no laptops and their desktop monitors were subject to screen burn. Fast forward 10-15 years and we’re dealing with laptops used outside of homes, where “saving” the screen is irrelevant but “locking” it became paramount.
Back in the days, the main features were to animate the screen to prevent screen burn and allow that to happen before turning off the screen because that took time to wake up. Nowadays we’re in a completely different situation, it’s all about locking it and once it’s locked we want to see our battery level, our multimedia controls, we want to be able to access the on-screen keyboard, switch layout, use the fingerprint reader etc..
We’ll go one step at a time here. The next Cinnamon release will keep the exact same configuration options, introduce the new screensaver and keep compatibility as a fallback with the older one. The release after that will abandon the old screensaver, review all use cases and simplify how and when the screen gets locked.

The screensaver looks great, and that was a very interesting anecdote. I’d personally love more behind-the-scenes stories like that! Thanks for all your hard work.
I would also add that this Blog and the “bug” explanation was really interesting and more info like this would be most welcome by me as well.
Thanks for the update, it’s nice to see where the development is heading.
There seems to be a small security gap in the current lock screen (?) When I use my laptop with an external monitor and then lock the screen, I can see the screen and its applications for a brief moment by closing and opening the laptop lid, as if I hadn’t activated the lock screen at all. After about a second, the lock screen reappears, but you can repeat the process!
I believe that’s the exact issue this blog post discusses fixing.
Hello! Greetings to the entire Linux Mint team, thank you for your wonderful work on Mint development.
I see that the System Report is expanding with new items. Therefore, I would like to request that the GPU tab, in addition to the data already displayed, also include an item indicating the mesa library version 🙂
Looking forward to the Sensors information. When I see temperatures in Centigrade I always have to search for the formula for converting to Fahrenheit. For me it would just be nice to see both.
No offence intended, but there are not many countries in the world still using Fahrenheit, except the US, who strangely, still use “Imperial” measurements.
multiply by 2 and add 32, will give you a close approximation
Thanks for the interesting improvements. Can we expect a fix for Nemo in the future? Currently, the copy progress bar refers to the read progress from the source medium, not the write progress to the target medium. Therefore, it’s very easy to damage the storage medium by removing it from the computer when the progress bar has disappeared and the write is still in progress.
Best regards.
It’s not going by ‘read progress’. It’s that the writes to the external drive are being cached. This is not something Nemo has control over – it’s a lower-level problem, and gets worse the more memory you have (the more memory the kernel uses to cache these writes, while finishing writing the USB stick asynchronously).
Make sure you’re using ‘eject/safely remove’ from the drive applet or Nemo – even though it’s frustrating to have to wait after you thought the transfer completed, this should help avoid corruption by waiting to physically remove the device.
Hi Jarosz,
This is not a Nemo / Cinnamon issue, it’s a base OS configuration.
Follow this tutorial from our beloved Pyotr from the Mint Forums:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/speed-mint.html#ID4
I can’t stress enough how valuable his blog is and I think a lot of these tips should be implemented by default on Mint (@Clem!!). Every Mint user should know about its existence and take a look at it to improve their Mint installation and improve their knowledge about it. While browsing it to search for the link for you I’ve found 9 topics I should and I want to know more about. And I’m using Mint for 15 years now. There’s so so so much to know about your Linux…
Hope this link fixes it, cheers.
Two add-ons:
1) A correction: His name is Pjotr. My apologies to him for the previous typo.
2) You can always use the terminal command sync to make sure all data is written to media. There is no progress output but when the terminal prompt is given back to you (AKA you can type another command) it means all disk caches have been flushed and all data has been written to disk. You can now proceed to unmount (AKA eject) the medium and after the system notification pops out you can safely remove it.
@Bruno, thanks for the linuxtips link. I saved it to a file and I’m going to look into it in detail. It seems to have many important tips and suggestions.
Thanks for your help! Previously, I modified the file:
/etc/sysctl.conf
and added the following entry:
vm.dirty_bytes=15728640
But all these solutions have their drawbacks.
I’ve been using Linux Mint for many years, but the problem is that I’ve installed it on many family computers, and unfortunately, corrupted data or storage media are the biggest problem for my family.
Regards
@Luís, you’re welcome! As well as you @Jarosz.
“(…) the problem is that I’ve installed it on many family computers, and unfortunately, corrupted data or storage media are the biggest problem for my family.”
@Clem, are you following this?
I wrote a feature proposal in Github for this issue… 2 years ago.
https://github.com/orgs/linuxmint/discussions/429
Let add your cases to that thread.
Thank you as always.
Is it on the roadmap to fix fcitx not changing layouts when switching keyboards? It seams to keep the default layout on all keyboards. Switching layouts only works on ibus but the input methods app still recommends using fcitx (which should normally be the right choice, it’s just broken now).
Sorry for hijacking the topic. Not sure if I should open a github issue for this.
There seam to be allot of keyboard issues recently.
Let’s talk about it in forum, I use fcitx for three languages, French, English and Chinese with two different keyboard Azerty-FR and Qwerty-US, switching keyboard with Win-Space and language with Ctrl-Space without problems. I pushed a how-to build on 22.1 and verified with later versions of Mint https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=450326
Hi, switching layout independently from switching keyboard may work on Mint22.
I use two keyboards, FR-AZERTY and US-QWERTY and four layouts French English Simplified-Chinese and Hanyu-Pinyin
I wrote a small how-to in Mint forums “How-to add Chinese and French typing on a fresh Mint 22”
Let’s open a post in Mint forums and raise it to me through PM if I could help.
Hi Peng,
I saw your post. And yes, it works if you do it with fcitx5. That is also my suggestion that I write in my github issue that I made recently. The problem is that the Input method (app in settings) still recommends and auto-installs fcitx (version 4 not fcitx5) which became broken on the current cinnamon.
https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/issues/13622
Awesome! The new screensaver looks fantastic. Cinnamon used to have a bit of a reputation for being too conservative in its theming and overall appearance, but I’d argue that nowadays it’s actually one of the best‑looking and modern desktop environments out there, so congrats for all your efforts.
Quick question: I’ve noticed that you’ve been introducing more rounded corners across various desktop elements recently, and I really enjoy this direction. However, it seems that window borders still keep rectangular bottom corners. I’m guessing this might be due to GTK 3 limitations, but is this something you’re planning to refine in the future?
Best regards
> screensaver
You would be a hero if you could have the return of flying toasters and pipes, Clem.
This is still the same style of lock screen as the current one. There are no plans to do the old style screensavers.
The new screensaver is very nice and looks very attractive. Interesting anecdote, is that some kind of red text that appears very briefly, for a second before the Login screen?
You are doing a great job, Mint is really getting better and better, keep it up.
Are there any plans to implement a native ‘Do Not Disturb’ toggle in the Cinnamon notification settings? Many users prefer to silence pop-ups while still logging notifications in the applet, similar to how the ‘Notifications Enhanced’ applet works.
Looks a ton better! Nice work! It looks like Joseph fixed the bug where the clock and date were misaligned when the hour was single-digit. I totally appreciate that, as it really triggered my visual perfectionist tendencies. I still really miss the old animated screensavers, though. They were a proper art form in their time. I wish there was a way to incorporate those back in, for people who want them. (Yeah, I know there’s Xscreensaver, but the user interface on it looks terribly ugly.)
Thanks for the credit, but @mtwebster actually fixed the alignment issue when he implemented this directly in Cinnamon.
Well, both you and @mtwebster did an amazing job!
just a thought: why not let the new “screensaver” (actually more of a lockscreen) offer a draw buffer so that a separate process can write arbitrary images to it and display those (an O.G. screensaver)… then let the user pick which software will be called upon to draw on that buffer… presto, safety is builtin while cute flying toaster animations is modularly customizable (and if the custom drawing process crashes it doesn’t unlock the screen)
Paulo Villi, that would be amazing! More options is always better, as long as it doesn’t introduce other problems. I would **LOVE** to have the old school screensaver functionality back without Xscreensaver’s ugly login interface, like Mint used to have.
I wonder if I’m the only Mint user in the world who doesn’t have a problem with the current screensaver. I quite like it. Of course, I also love the new menu, as well, so I may just be a weirdo. Always great reading the behind-the-scenes stuff about the best operating system around. Mint for life.
Actually, the first thing I noticed was that your current screensaver has the battery status, whereas the new one doesn’t.
I don’t know how you did that, as the battery status is sadly not an option in the settings menu for the current screensaver. One very kind fellow forum user helped me hack the screensaver so it could give me a quick info re the battery status of my laptop. I find that extremely helpful.
Is there any chance you could add this function as an option to the new one, pretty please?
The battery status currently works just like the old one. In that screenshot my laptop was plugged in and fully charged. If it’s unplugged and discharging or currently charging, the status icon shows up. I’d like to make these look a bit different also. Just haven’t gotten that far.
That was a cool anecdote and I loved reading about it. I wish we got more little snippets like this, perhaps as some sort of article on a dedicated webpage? 😛
Screensavers might not be the world’s most exciting topic, but I love that the Mint team is doing good work on it. It’s care for the “boring” stuff that sets Mint apart from other distros for me.
Interesting, I remember screensaver animations like bubbles when I used Windows 7 some years ago, but I never sat down to consider what actual function it was fulfilling.
question with concern about wayland. if cinnamon or that screensaver/lockscreen crash, does it recover to blank state as it now? by that i mean whatever software/program i open before the crash is gone after it recover from crash, so all work/stuff just gone like that. luckily so far it only happen twice in a span of a year of use. is that wayland limitation or something cause it seem other DE also have the same problem.
Can we have launcher count (for notifications) similar to the feature present in Plank, KDE, GNOME Shell and Unity in Cinnamon? I started a discussion, but it was closed without any discussion at all.
You mean like the ones that were already implemented: https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/pull/12569
See https://github.com/orgs/linuxmint/discussions/1402 for details
I find the information provided by the new System Reports tool quite helpful, especially power consumption and port/device speeds in the USB section, and now with the sensors info added it got even better!
Thanks to the team and keep up the good work.
Wow, that was quite insightful! I had this issue that shows your session briefly quite often I’d say, like once a month – too often for such a critical bug. Every time it happened it triggered the “should I switch back to Windows” thought process… not that anything ever happens in that regard, as Windows gets more laughable by the day. But a screen lock not working is a big issue. Thus I’m very glad it got fixed! And the insight into the development process is quite a valuable lesson for everyone who has to do with software development. Thank you for that! 🙂
Modern OLED screens do still experience burn-in though. Hope that’s taken into account as well.
Yes, that’s happened with my wife’s work computer. I personally believe traditional screensavers are still important for this and many other reasons, and I really wish they would make a comeback.
Isn’t burn-in prevented by blacking out the screen as much or more as a “traditional” screensaver? Or are you worried about the fixed placement of UI elements in the lockscreen being the cause of burn-in (in which case, blacking out the screen after X time in the lockscreen should solve it)
Paulo Villi, that’s probably true, but it’s not as fun to look at. 😉 For me, when I’m not using my computer, I like that it can serve other functions, such as a clock or a piece of desktop art.
I recently had that bug with the screensaver, so it’s great that you fixed it. Regarding Wayland, I would like to ask if you plan to replace Touchegg in the future, as it does not work properly.
P.S. I hope that in Mint 23 the new Cinnamon theme (darker) will be the official one, and that you can update the wallpapers.
What real difference does it make if that theme is “official”? It ships with Cinnamon, so it there to use. It also makes more sense to use Mint-Y as the default in Mint since it’s created to match the default applications theme.
In which programming language should Mint developers write their programs? I mean simple languages like Odin, V, D, Roc, Toit, Zig, Hylo? GTK5 should be written in one of them not in javascript?
Unrelated to the post, but I see that Ubuntu is talking about implementing age verification to comply with a new California law. I think it’s safe to say most Mint users would view age verification/restrictions as an invasion to privacy. Do you plan on implementing (or simply not removing from upstream) age verification like Ubuntu is proposing? I, for one, would appreciate it if such a feature NOT exist in Mint even if it means Mint has to add a disclaimer that this OS can’t be used in California. https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2026-March/043510.html
Quick question: Any thoughts of creating a BSD Mint distro as a fall-back just in case Ubuntu and Debian decide to impose California’s digital ID?
Screensaver => Thanks for lock screen failure removal, I nearly faced it with a “Anniversary picture spoiler”.
Input methods => to ease Mint enhancements please use an up to date version of FCITX => FCITX5, and keep former version in repository for manual installation by some users
Great work with the new screensaver! It’s nice to see Mint looking more modern and minimalist without losing its usual stability and reliability. I hope you’ll modernize the themes someday.
will the new Wayland‑compatible Cinnamon screensaver also change how the lock screen looks or behaves after waking up?
see
Too much rounded corners. Hideous trend that needs to stop.
I **want** rounded corners! If you don’t like them, just use a theme with square corners. What I want Mint to implement is rounded bottom corners of windows as well as the top!
Don’t worry Billy, these trends are just like fashion trends, they come and go every 5-10 years.
Just wait a few years and it will go away! 🙂
the only thing i need now is 1:1 touch-pad gestures.
System Settings -> Gestures doesn’t do what you need? What do you mean by 1:1?
While reading your comment on the screen saver, i tried it unstead of the sleep mode I used.
I discovered that enables me not to lock the screen :
At each wake up no need to enter my word pass on and on.
Something I was looking for.
This is wonderful news! I’m glad to hear things are progressing toward getting Wayland to work. Once you guys have a stable Mint Cinnamon with Wayland, I’ll give it a test drive on my main computer. Right now, I’m running Ubuntu 24.04 because I appreciate the security that Wayland offers over Xorg.
what about california age situation?
I’m a California resident and avid Mint user. I normally don’t have a problem with our state’s politics, but in this case, I wish I could go slap some sense into our governor. This is stupid. My fear is that it will prevent me from being able to use Mint in the future without risking their $2,500 to $7,500 per user violation fine.
It would help a lot to read what Clem has to say about this, as it is not just California. Meanwhile there is also other US states and even countries (like Brazil) moving along this nasty path.
More information is available at the Ageless Linux site. https://agelesslinux.org/distros.html
The fee is for OS devs, not users.
Why is the update manager so pale and barely visible, and also the user home directory as well as synaptic? If there is a setting for it to make easier to see and read why isn’t it set that way by default?
What exactly are you talking about? Those things follow your theme. I’ve not noticed visibility issues with the default theme options. Unless I’m misunderstanding your meaning
Never mind, I found the solution and fixed the problem. Some how the wrong themes were installed during system instillation. I selected a darker background in appearance settings. Before I reset the theme my files were barely visible after I opened a file folder.
Really nice change from an engineering perspective. Moving the screensaver from a separate Xorg-era component into Cinnamon itself feels like the right call – less architectural complexity, smoother behavior, and a much clearer path to proper Wayland support. Also very cool that this refactor helped uncover and fix an old rendering/race issue that had apparently been around for years.
I could be wrong, but but as of 2026/03/18 it would now appear that Debian’s new leadership is headed in the same direction as Ubuntu to force mandatory age verification before any of us can exercise the freedom to use the computers we all bought with *our* own money. I am profoundly disappointed and angered at this intrusion. Speaking for myself, I ask NOBODY permission to use my personal property! That said, I sincerely love Mint Linux and appreciate all of the work and effort that you have put into this distro. Thank you. If the Mint Linux development team have no other alternative but to comply, I understand and bear no ill will. It is what it is. However, I for one will not be complying. My computer; my property; my choice.
please include a feature for the new screen saver… a moving background… like mac does, it looks grate… a greate deal of the user xperience is… please.. consider it… just a few seconds of a loop clip.
Thank you so much for the work you’ve put into this.
Can we have your stance on age verification?
Hopefully Linux Mint will be in the ‘Not Implementing’ category on some lists I’ve seen online that track OSs and what their current status with regards to age verification is.
I love some of the old screensavers! Currently using Whirlwind Warp, Ripples is wonderful too. Will these run in the new screensaver program or does the rewrite necessitate dropping support?
What are you using to do this? The Cinnamon screensaver hasn’t supported anything but a dim version of your background with time and date. It sounds like you’ve maybe replaced Cinnnamon screensaver with Xscreensaver or something similar, in which case, the new Cinnamon screensaver changes are irrelevant to your usage. Unless I’ve missed something?
Linux Mint 22.3, fast shutdown ,but very slow boot up, Still the best Linux system of them all.
What are your thoughts on SystemD adding ID verification? Will you switch over to a different system initializer?
Can Devuan Excalibur 6, a systemd-free fork of the Debian distro, please be used as a base for LMDE?
Does Linux Mint have an official response that can be added to the https://agelesslinux.org/distros.html page?
Thank you
Does Mint plan to keep the future stripped down Ubuntu’s version of GRUB or change it to unmodified one? Removing md-raid booting support other than RAID1 and crypted partitions is a serious con.
https://forums.linuxmint.com
Ce blog n’est pas conçu pour cela.
pls in next version of linux mint add a video wallpaper property to make the desktop more cool
Will the next release still offer Xorg support or do you switch completely to Wayland? I read that Ubuntu 26.04 LTS aka ‘Resolute Raccoon’ will not ship with Xorg anymore but will rely on Wayland only as X11 support will be removed from the latest gdm. I guess Xorg support will still be possible as LightDM is used as display manager.
No news?
Agree,i wait news about wayland on mint
+1 Agree.
+1 Agree
I’m guessing the April news is coming up next. 😁
I am so ready for the Mint team to work on making wayland compatible with Mint.
Any news about more active future development of LMDE?
LMDE currently seems to be an ideal option for a robust and stable Linux OS distribution, because the link to Ubuntu (LTS) upstream no longer reliably guarantees both stability, or rather reliability, and robustness.
The main goal of LMDE development should be to eliminate all the basic disadvantages of LMDE vs LM:
1. Absence of “Driver manager”
2. Absence of Linux Kernels management at “Update manager”
3. Absence of PPA support
4. Generally older versions of DEB packages and Linux Kernels
Is there any chance that Clem’s team will focus on this task in the near future?
I switched back to LMDE today because I’m pretty sick of all the other distros ,I just want something simple that works. I also don’t like the driver manager’s shortcomings. Sure, I can type `sudo apt install nvidia-driver` into the console and all that, but even then the driver version will be 550 when 595 is already out, and I think the Mint team should do something about it.
On both My Laptop and Desktop computers, I have it set to never go to screen saver. I set them to power on at all times, unless I shut the system down. My laptop is always plugged and usually hooked to our TV
Where are the April news?
It looks like we’re skipping the April news and moving straight on to the May news. 😬
News usually come in the beginning of the next month. So April news are coming early in May.
That’s how it usually is, there are exceptions, like the news for March
@Karl:
I meant the March news, which should be posted on April. He usually publishes them early in the month.
This is a very sad situation. Ever since you’ve had a lot of supporters and received generous donations, you couldn’t care less about anything—you don’t care what people want, only what you want.
