Note: The improvements and features mentioned in this blog post are planned for the next version of Linux Mint, which is scheduled for Christmas this year.

Wayland

We worked really hard on Wayland and we got to the point where it feels solid and the experience is almost on par with X11. Wayland support will no longer be considered “experimental”. In the next version of Cinnamon, both X11 and Wayland will be fully supported.

Here are some of the improvements we implemented:

  • Proper mapping (sizing and positioning) for new windows, applet popup menus and context menus
  • Proper focus stealing prevention
  • Many Wayland crash scenarios fixed in Cinnamon, muffin, cinnamon-session and Xwayland
  • Improved support for multiple monitors and KVM switches
  • Hardware acceleration throughout the compositor, desktop session, and both Wayland and Xwayland clients (via wl_drm, zwp_linux_dmabuf_v1 feedback v4,  hardware-accelerated GBM over EGL (for NVIDIA))
  • Full HiDPI support (crisp icons, fixes in mouse cursors, and bugs specific to Chromium apps such as Slack or VSCode)
  • Window Progress (this is what allows, for instance, to see nemo copy progress in the panel app button)
  • Root applications (run via pkexec) run as Wayland clients (not Xwayland)
  • Session fixes

Cinnamon

Cinnamon also received the following improvements:

  • A cinnamon-list-windows command was introduced to make it easy to list all open windows and to quickly see their position, size, HiDPI/app/backend info.
  • Muffin now rounds coordinates and dimensions for all Clutter actors. This guarantee crisp and precise rendering and fixes blur issues when applets or desktop components forget to do so themselves.
  • Support for systemd’s graphical-session. This boosts Cinnamon’s compatibility with many upstream projects.

System

SSH keyring support was improved system-wide.

Fixes were implemented in the LightDM configuration. 

Support for fingerprint authentication was improved in Slick Greeter. Placing your finger on the fingerprint reader is enough to log in. You no longer need to press Enter afterwards.

Security Updates

Another severe security flaw was found this month. This time, it affects mintupdate: CVE-2026-59159.

I’d like to thank Robbie Loewen-Ross for finding this vulnerability and working with us on it.

Security updates were sent 3 weeks ago, for all affected versions, in both supported and EOL (End-of-Life) Linux Mint and LMDE releases.

  4. Hi Clem,Will Wayland properly handle the cursor generated by Huion and Wacom graphics tablets? Also, will an additional cursor be visible during screen capture?

    1. Hi,

      I don’t have any of these tablets but yes, I assume it should. Showing/hiding the mouse cursor during screen capture is an option in the screenshot tool.

    2. Thanks, Clem.

      I wanted to clarify that this doesn’t seem to work correctly in GNOME. Under Wayland, screen recording does not capture the cursor generated by a graphics tablet stylus (at least with Huion, and other users have reported the same with Wacom).

      I started a discussion about it here:

      I have since switched to KDE Plasma, and the stylus cursor is captured correctly there during screen recording, so the issue appears to be specific to GNOME’s implementation.

      Do you think Cinnamon could handle this differently than GNOME, or would it inherit the same Wayland behavior?

  5. Another blog post with notable improvements to Wayland. It’s great to be seeing the progress and the removal of the experimental tag, which hopefully gets more people onto Cinnamon who are wanting of Wayland.
    I ponder when in the future would Cinnamon consider Wayland the default session.

    On a slightly different topic. Is there a public official building script for creating Mint ISO as it appears there is no public fully extensive and automated way of building the same downloadable versions of Mint as the ones offered on the official Website.

  6. Clem: Do you plan to have a longer ‘Beta Testing’ window for this release, rather than the four to six week as in the past?

    1. The BETA phase is usually a minimum of 2 weeks, it depends on on the potential for regression and how much there is to test. For this release, we’ll be looking at a full year of development and a new LTS base, so it will probably be longer than normal.

    1. In an ideal scenario, we manage to make Wayland work just as well as X11 and we ship with X11 by default. That’s what we’re aiming for right now. Wayland is promising and requires usage/testing/feedback/growth, X11 is proven/mature.

  8. Christmas is a long way off… September would be less problematic, since full Wayland support really makes a difference, but Linux Mint is the most reliable project out there right now.
    it’s worth the wait.

    1. I agree that Christmas is a long way off. But I also agree that it will be well worth the wait. And, providing an estimated release date that allows for real development and problem solving is a great idea, especially when making the transition from X11 to Wayland. And, by insuring that both will be available for a significant amount of time prior to going full Wayland allows plenty of time make sure Wayland is a dependable display server protocol. All of these things make Linux Mint one of the most trusted, most reliable Linux distro around, in my opinion. It’s nice to see others appreciate the dedication to the quality releases over quick releases.

  9. Thank you for being to transparent about the changes in Linux Mint! It’s great to see that you care about what’s important and what’s the best for the community and the users. I’m looking forward to using Wayland at the end of the year.
    Is there any chance that LMDE gets a kernel menu in mintUpdate? It could integrate with kernels from Debian backports

    2. It’s on our roadmap to move kernel management from mintupdate to mintsysadm, and when/if that happens we’ll have LMDE compatibility in mind. I can’t promise whether that will happen in time for the next Mint release though. We haven’t really worked on that yet.

    Will primary selection (i.e. copying just by selecting and pasting via middle mouse button work)? AFAIK, this isn’t a core feature of wayland.

    1. That’s a serious oversight on Wayland’s part, if that’s true! Yikes! That’s a definite show stopper for me! The middle-click copy/paste is a big part of my workflow that I refuse to give up on. It’s one of the many uniquely Linux things that I absolutely love

    2. It does work on Wayland. GTK has disabled it by default now though, which is a separate issue? You need to set the gtk-enable-primary-paste to “true” to keep it working.

      I used to have an URL for a site which listed which wayland implementations supported which protocol (but don’t find it right now)… and there by far not all seemed to have supported that primary-selection-unstable-v1

      OTOH, I just found this blog https://drewdevault.com/blog/Wayland-misconceptions-debunked/
      which claims it would be supported by nearly all.

      @Lurux didn’t know it was a GTK thing… I thought it’s the compositor which would handle it, and hasn’t Cinnamon forked that from GNOME?

      Another concern of mine is, whether with wayland I can still set keyboard shortcuts in Cinnamon for only the Super-key (which I use for opening a terminal and is super handy) and just the Menu-key (which I use to start diodon’s clipboard selection) (i.e. no combination with another key).

  12. what about drag & drop support in wayland? like drag & drop files in nemo or drag browser stuff(currently cant drag & drop tab or arrange anything in browser unless launched in x11 or xwayland)

    1. Moving tabs in FF and DND’ing files in Nemo works fine. I’ve only listed the main improvements on this blog post, but we’re basically considering the Wayland session fully supported. So any little thing we see we consider a bug and we fix or try to fix.

      To give you an example, we still have a little bug on DND in Wayland. The files being DND are missing the little copy/move emblem. Not a big deal yet, but that’s the kind of things we’ll tackle before release.

  14. The great progress you’ve made on the new version is very encouraging. Thank you for your dedication!

    I’d like to ask a couple of questions: When will we be able to see an ISO of the HWE version with a more up-to-date kernel (specifically from the 7 series)? .
    Also, have you considered improving AppImage integration in Mint? I recently found an app (AppManager) that simplifies managing execution permissions for this format, as well as checking for updates, and it’s also compatible with Wayland.

    1. We’ll prepare ISOs for 22.3 with kernel 7.0.

      Appimage integration has been on our roadmap for a while. I can’t promise when it will be looked at and what we’ll do about it. It’s not a priority item, but yeah, it’s on our roadmap as one of the things we’d like to look at.

    2. AppImage does not support updates for the software it offers.

      There are plenty of outdated AppImage software versions available online, which therefore contain security vulnerabilities ;-(

      The settings for AppImage software must also be modified in order to run an AppImage program, which complicates their use.

      AppImage is a file format from a bygone era that has no place in today’s secure computing environment.

      I am not in favor of integrating it into Linux Mint.

  15. @Clem, will the new Cinnamon still be usable on X11? At the moment, I cannot get the latest LM 22.3 version of Cinnamon to work at all in Wayland on my daily use computer (the only computer I’ve got at the moment). The X11 version works beautifully, but logging into a Wayland session goes immediately to a black screen and the system completely freezes while accessing the hard drive. I can let it sit there for hours, and it never resolves. I can’t get to a terminal (ctrl-alt-F1, etc.) or get to anything other than the black screen at all, so it’s a complete system lock up. When I force the system off and back on, it turns out the Wayland session lock up corrupted the hard drive, and I have to run fsck to resolve the problems and get things working again. When I try it in a Guest session with Wayland, it still freezes up, but doesn’t affect the hard drive (I assume this is because it’s running the session in a RAM disk, maybe?). I’d love to be able to test out the Wayland session, but if this is the result, I don’t want to risk it on my daily use system that needs to remain usable. And if/when Cinnamon doesn’t support X11, that might be a major problem for me.

    1. Hi Mike,

      Wayland in 22.3 is experimental. It’s not even BETA, it’s missing core components, basic features and it comes with critical bugs. It’s more of a proof of concept to show that Cinnamon can and will eventually support Wayland.

      Wayland in the next version of Mint/Cinnamon is much more stable. In fact we’re hoping it will be as nice an experience as with X11.

      That being said. Wayland is nowhere near as mature as X11, it doesn’t yet have killer features which justify moving away from X11 right now, quite the opposite, and there are reasons for X11 to stick around, things that simply aren’t covered or supported by Wayland. So X11 is here to stay.

      Two other reasons you’ll see X11 in the next Mint release:

      – Some desktops don’t work on Wayland, so X11 is still needed.
      – Even in Cinnamon, even if we manage to make Wayland work just as well as X11, it would be silly to jump into Wayland by default and turn every user into a guinea pig. We’ll want one full release at the very least, with a perfectly working Wayland session, and a year of feedback, before even considering using it as default.

    I have several questions about the release of Mint 23 and the current version 22.3:
    1.) Will the release of Mint 23 adopt the architecture variants from Ubuntu 26.04 (such as switching to amd64v3)?
    2.) Will there be zsync files to reduce download time and size if you already have the ISOs from the previous version?
    3.) Kernel 7.0 in Mint 22.3:
    I’m currently running kernel 6.17.0-35 and would like to update to the 7.0 series, but as of today, only version 7.0.0-14 from April 13 (according to the linked changelog) is available. Unlike the kernel I’m currently using, this kernel does not include the security patches for the Frag family (e.g., CVE-2026-46300). On Ubuntu’s CVE page, kernel 7.0.0-22 is listed as the fixed version. However, a look at Ubuntu’s package overview shows that this version is only available for Ubuntu 26.04, but not for 24.04, on which Mint 22.3 is based. In the meantime, kernel 7.0.0-27 has been released, which also hasn’t been ported to 24.04. This now results in a nearly 3-month gap in the patch level.
    Is there any information on the background of this? Unfortunately, I can’t find anything useful—or am I missing something here? I’m concerned that the 6.17 kernel will reach EOL in August before the 7.0 kernel is updated. Kernel 6.8.0-134 from June 26 was the last kernel update I saw in the updater. Even kernel 6.17.0-35 from May 26 seems to be a bit behind, since 6.17.0-40 is already available for Ubuntu 25.10 (June 19).

      3. Afaik 7.0 is HWE-edge right now in 24.04. I guess it’s not “fully” considered HWE yet and the HWE support branch is still pointing at 6.17. This is Ubuntu’s decision. All you can do is wait.

What I would like to ask is if we are going to have 1 to 1 touchpad gestures( same as gnome ,kde ) instead of having “shortcut” kind ones just like we have at the moment on x11.   20. Thanks Mint team! I’m happy to see that Nvidia was mentioned at least once in this post regarding Wayland. I’m really excited to see how polished the Mint implementation is despite everything that Nvidia does to be difficult. Does anyone know if sleep/hibernate is working well currently? That is often a difficult thing for Nvidia GPUs, especially if they are using HDMI.

    1. Sleep works perfectly on mine, but it’s a dual GPU system (integrated AMD Vega 7 and dedicated NVIDIA GTX 1650). I don’t know if that makes any difference.

    2. Sleep and hibernation depend on hardware support.If e.g. Nvidia or the computer manufacturer (including BIOS/ firmware) do not support standard sleep and hibernation, it is virtually impossible to get it working properly.
      If you buy a new hardware, by all means, check if the vendor officially supports Linux for the hardware.

  21. With Wayland no longer experimental, will it become the default for new and/or existing installations? Proper fractional scaling support is very important in today’s world, and I’d hate to see people get turned off of Mint (or Linux as a whole) because screen scaling doesn’t work right out-of-the-box.

  22. Sleep works well on my machine. There was an instance a while back where it stopped working, but after manually restarting the Nvidia sleep service it has worked perfectly fine.

  23. I’d like to suggest shipping KDE’s XWayland Video Bridge if you want to consider the Wayland session out of experimental, this is a desktop-agnostic piece of software which adresses the gap of screen-sharing on Wayland for legacy apps, for example in Discord

  24. This was a great quality of life update for cinnamon wayland session, before i tried to open steam, and steam interface simply crashed, now it opens normally.
    Right clicking a non cinnamon applet (like steam) open it’s menu in the middle of the screen for some odd reason, and the performance wise is still no there yet, but it was a great update, at this rate when the new cinnamon launches it will have a very good wayland session, quite on par with the x11 one.

  26. Please provide a series of early alpha / beta releases to get Wayland support tested thoroughly for LM23. It took Gnome/ Plasma years to get most of the Wayland issues discovered and solved.

    I have just one question about the next version of LMC 23, and it relates to upgrade support for LMC 22.3. Will be able to offer a system upgrade to LMC 23 via the Update Manager?
    This may seem trivial, but when I have several machines running LMC 22.3, a full upgrade process from scratch is no small task.

  29. Cinnamon soon to become fully Wayland is excellent news. I wish MATE would also get full Wayland support. At least Xfce has made a start on that.

    1. It’s a lot of work, not just to make everything work in the common scenario but also to get HiDPI working properly, GPU acceleration and all. All of that relied on the toolkit and the X server, and it now has to be handled individually by every little compositor out there. It doesn’t necessarily makes sense to want every DE to make its own wayland compositor long-term. Some might stick to X11 (whether that’s Xorg or some new server), some might adopt a common compositor or build upon one. It might make sense for large DEs to do that as well at some stage. We’ll see.

  30. I was wondering whether it would be possible to make the roadmap public at some point? With development cycles taking longer, it would be nice to have something like a trello board to give a brief overview of what’s in store for the next release and what’s in store for the more distant future.

  35. So, this spells the end for SimpleScreenRecorder on Linux Mint with Wayland. All the alternatives are either too complex or simply not as good.

    1. GPUScreenRecorder is almost the same thing in my opinion, plus x11 won’t simply end in the next Mint version, it will still be their Default session, and will still be a thing on Mint for a long time even when Wayland takes the default, and not only that, projects like Yserver really upgraded x11, making it support multiple monitors with different refresh rates, this will eventually mature and work on most hardwares, so Xorg will also have it’s modern option in the future. So don’t worry about it.

    3. Then you can keep using default xorg, it won’t go anywhere. Yserver is just another choice, cheers.

  36. I’m thrilled that Mint 23 can remove the experimental tag from Wayland. Is there a chance that by December that the “Enable fractional scaling controls (experimental)” could also drop the experimental tag under Display Settings in Mint 23? Just curious. I have no idea how related or unrelated those two are from a overall OS standpoint so I thought I’d ask. Thanks again for everything.

  37. I want to report a bug.
    When choosing the option to Suspend in Power Management Preferences on closing my laptop lid, instead of suspending my laptop completely shuts down.
    This has occurred only after the last update.
