As we mentioned last month, following the release of Linux Mint 21.1, the donations for December were at an all-time high. Many thanks to all the people who support our project. 721 donors in a single month is amazing. We’re very grateful and very proud to have such a great community.

Bug Fixes

Blueman was upgraded to version 2.3.5.

Cinnamon 5.6 received many bug fixes, including fixes the squashed alt-tab selector in multi-monitor mode, and cropped/flashing shadows on dialog windows.

Linux Mint 21.2 “Victoria”

The codename for Linux Mint 21.2 is “Victoria”.

Its release is planned for the end of June 2023. As usual it will support the Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce desktop environments.

The Xfce edition will ship with the latest Xfce 4.18.

Note: The following paragraphs give you a preview of some of the features we’re working on in preparation for Linux Mint 21.2.

21.2 preview: Login Screen Improvements

Slick Greeter, which is in charge of the login screen, was given support for multiple keyboard layouts. The indicator located on the top-right corner of the screen opens a menu which lets you switch between layouts.

System layouts defined in /etc/default/keyboard are listed first for easy access. Below that a sub-menu lists all supported layouts.

Touchpad support was also improved. Tap-to-click is detected and enabled automatically in the login screen.

The layout used for Onboard, the on-screen keyboard is configurable.

The keyboard navigation was improved. The arrow keys can be used to edit the password which is being typed. A revealer icon appears when the password is clicked or edited. This revealer can be used to toggle the visibility of the password.

Among other small improvements Slick-greeter also received support Wayland sessions, LXQT/Pademelon badges and a scrollable session list.

21.2 preview: Pix Rebase

Pix, which was originally based on gThumb 3.2.8, was rebased on gThumb 3.12.2.

The new gThumb UI was adopted. It uses headerbars and buttons instead of toolbars and menubars. It’s slightly less discoverable for newcomers but it looks very clean and remains quite intuitive.

This rebase brings 168 new features or user visible changes, most notably:

• Better performance, faster image loading, faster navigation
• Support for AVIF/HEIF and JXL formats
• Improved support for GIF, RAW and TIFF images
• Improved zoom controls
• Support for larger thumbnail sizes: 512, 768 and 1024 pixels.
• Allow to set shortcuts to activate filters.
• Template editor to edit text values with special codes:
  script commands, rename templates, print header and footer, etc.
• Support for color profiles
• Improved video playback
• New image tools: special effects; curves.
• Color picker
• Search in multiple folders
• Customizable keyboard shortcuts
• Improved filters
• Meson build system

The changes which were specific to Pix were cherry picked and re-applied. These include:

• A more intuitive default configuration
• Support for Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce
• Configurable dark-mode
• Support for Xapps favorites

21.2 preview: Support for HEIF/AVIF images and AI documents

Linux Mint 21.2 will feature full support for HEIF and AVIF image files.

Adobe Illustrator documents will also be properly supported by Xreader, the Document Viewer.

Happy New Year!

The end of 2022 was as hectic as it was exciting. We managed to stick to our schedule and reach our goals just before the holiday season.

91 reports were addressed during the BETA including a handful of release blockers. As always I want to address special thanks to all the people who helped us find bugs.

Linux Mint 21.1 was then released for download on the 20th of December and as an upgrade the day after. It was a huge success. The fact that it was close to Christmas played a role. The new artwork gave the release more visibility than usual. We gathered very positive feedback on some of the new features and the improvements that were pushed into this release. We were really happy to see your reactions.

The donations for December were higher than ever at $25,470. The number of donors reached 721 last month. To us this is a clear message that we made a lot of people happy with our work. We’re delighted! Many thanks for these donations!

In your feedback we also identified future areas of improvement. For instance, we noticed not everybody liked the new folder icons. This is something we’ll tackle in 21.2.

Before starting the next development cycle we’ll focus on a series of bug reports which were marked as non-urgent and which didn’t block the release. Some of them got fixed already so we’ll push a series of package updates this week.

LMDE 5 is already up to date with Linux Mint 21.1, it received its backports just before the holidays. Some of the mint tools will be backported in Linux Mint 21 early this year.

It is now possible to upgrade Linux Mint 21 to version 21.1.

If you’ve been waiting for this we’d like to thank you for your patience.

1. Create a system snapshot

You can use Timeshift to make a system snapshot before the upgrade.

If anything goes wrong, you can easily restore your operating system to its previous state.

Launch Timeshift from the application menu, follow the instructions on the screen to configure it and create a system snapshot.

2. Prepare for the upgrade

• Disable your screensaver
• If you installed Cinnamon spices (applets, desklets, extensions, themes), upgrade them from the System Settings

3. Upgrade the operating system

Upgrading to Linux Mint 21.1 is relatively easy.

In the Update Manager, click on the Refresh button to check for any new version of mintupdate or mint-upgrade-info. If there are updates for these packages, apply them.

Launch the System Upgrade by clicking on “Edit->Upgrade to Linux Mint 21.1 Vera”.

Follow the instructions on the screen.

If asked whether to keep or replace configuration files, choose to replace them.

4. Change artwork (optional)

Linux Mint 21.1 features artwork changes. The icons, the colors and the mouse cursor look different.

We recommend you reboot your computer for all changes to properly apply, then run the welcome screen to select your favorite color tones.

If you preferred the way Linux Mint looked prior to the upgrade launch the “Themes” settings. The 20.2 look is available under the name “Mint-Y-Legacy”.

5. Reboot the computer

Once the upgrade is finished, reboot your computer.

Commonly asked questions

• If the upgrade is not available to you, check that you have the latest versions of mintupdate (5.9.6 or higher) and mint-upgrade-info (1.2.0 or higher) and restart the Update Manager by launching it again from the applications menu.
• If the latest versions of mintupdate and mint-upgrade-info are not yet available in your mirrors, switch to the default repositories.
• This happens rarely, but if you ever got locked and were unable to log back in, switch to console with CTRL+ALT+F1, log in, and type “killall cinnamon-screensaver” (or “killall mate-screensaver” in MATE). Use CTRL+ALT+F7 or CTRL+ALT+F8 to get back to your session.
