Upgrade path to 17.3 now open for all editions

The upgrade path from Linux Mint 17, 17.1 and 17.2 to Linux Mint 17.3 is now open for all editions (Cinnamon, MATE, KDE and Xfce).

Instructions on how to perform this upgrade are available at http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2955

  1. Saw the update come across the updater, and knew it was here. 🙂

Laptop Thinkpad T450s, upgraded KDE without any issues.

    Thanks Clem!

  2. Unable to upgrade from 17.2. The “apply” button is greyed out.

Edit by Clem: Follow the instructions on the screen, it’s either greyed out because you need to acknowledge the warning message or because you’re missing a meta-package.

  3. Hello Clem: I explicitly have followed the instructions, acknowledged the warning message, installed the missing package, did a reboot … and… no go. A good guess though. I’m also not a Linux noob. 🙂

  4. upgrade from 17.2KDE to 17.3KDE with new kernel worked smooth and flawlessly – a big THANK YOU for that!!!

minor issue: as written in the “howto” GRUB2 shows 17.2 – but for me i can live with that fact, knowing UNAME and LSB_RELEASE shows the correct kernel and version.

  5. I have upgraded tot the beta version of Linux Mint Rosa 17.3 Xfce by doing the following in the terminal console:

    sudo cp -v /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list.bak

    sudo sed -i ‘s/rafaela/rosa/g’ /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

    sudo reboot

Does it mean that after applying the latest updates in the Update Manager my Linux Mint 17.3 Xfce beta installation has been upgraded to the official 17.3 Xfce stable version?

Edit by Clem: Yes, and more than that, that applies all updates (including level 4 and 5).

  6. The below is what I got after the upgrade, manually run ‘sudo dpkg –configure -a’, rebooted, did a refresh and same issue came up.

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run ‘sudo dpkg –configure -a’ to correct the problem.
    E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

  7. Seem my last comment was “moderated”.

Was trying to say that my printer set-up logic is now broken.

    Mint is Jolly-good otherwise .

  8. “Make sure to read the release notes…”

    The KDE edition is missing.

Edit by Clem: Ah sorry, it’s a timing issue (because Xfce/KDE are yet to be officially released). The notes are ready though, I’ll add them right now. Sorry about this.

  9. Updated both my master system (KDE) and my pen-drive portable OS (Xfce)
    both updated without any problems.

Dumped Windoze 4 months ago in favour of Linux Mint and I am very impressed with the distros.

Keep up the sterling work guys it is very much appreciated.

    Thanks.

  10. Congrats to the team. Upgrade of the XFCE edition was boring easy. Even
the install of the latest 4.2 Kernel. On my multiboot system i just have to do a sudo update-grub from my main debian install to show Rosa on the bootscreen.

  11. I upgraded from 17.2 to 17.3 but now Compiz won’t let me have more than 1 Workspace. I also can’t raise the window manager to change out of Compiz

Edit by Clem: Hi Kim. Can you confirm we’re talking about Xfce here? In Menu -> Desktop Settings, re-choose another WM and then Compiz. You can also click on the button to reset the Compiz settings. Also, what do you mean by “can’t raise the window manager”? (last but not least, feel free to install compton).

  12. Just did lots of updates (not upgrade) for a customer PC with MATE 17. Customer had been ignoring the updater. Then did the upgrade from 17 direct to 17.3. No problems – thanks Clem and those involved.

Oh, just one minor thing: I had already chosen Australian repositories; the upgrade lost that and prompted to change them again.

Edit by Clem: Hi Bob, yes that’s by design. At the moment the upgrade path sets the repositories back to the default mirrors… that’s to avoid additional/eventual causes of issues. We want to improve that going forward by performing more detection and up-to-date-ness tests on the mirrors, but it’s a limitation for now.

  13. Upgrade instructions for all those experiencing a problem when attempting to upgrade from 17.2 xfce to 17.3 xfce using the update manager.

The update manager for whatever reason doesn’t properly update/reflect the software sources for the 17.3 Rosa release. Tinkering with mirror sources has no effect.

To upgrade via the terminal do the following:

    * Good idea to backup your software sources list first
    sudo cp -v /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list.bak

    * Plug in the Rosa sources which we will need
    sudo sed -i ‘s/rafaela/rosa/g’ /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list

    * Now update the packages list
    sudo apt-get update

    * Do the update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Reboot when the updating is complete. After rebooting, run the update manager again and install whatever it offers.

    That should do it.

By the way, for anyone interested in running a much newer kernel, 4.2.3-040203-generic works quite fine. I’ve used it for some time now and it works well.

  14. Upgrade went reasonable smoothly from XFCE 17.2 to 17.3. Compton isn’t installed by default so I installed it with the Software Manager after the upgrade. I also had to reset Compiz settings as the key bindings went missing after the upgrade for some reason. But I’m now able to switch between Compiz and Compton for compositing on the fly, without having to logout of my session and login again. Thanks for a great point release!

Edit by Clem: It’s a bit technical but we moved the Compiz configuration backend from ini to dconf between 17.2 and 17.3, so that’s probably why you had to reset the settings. Compton is installed by default in 17.3 but there’s no dependency on it so it’s not triggered to be installed during the upgrade. You can also install marco and openbox if you want, they’re supported as well by mintdesktop.

  15. @mgiesbre
In my case with the user “open” the update failed with “no internet connection” and no possibility to change source (nothing happen in “change source”).
Change to user “admin” and the update worked flawless.

@Clem Thank´s very much for this wonderful work in Mint.

  16. I updated flawlessly on my ASUS laptop to XFCE 17.3. Thanks for the work!
I did notice that the ISO’s are not updated yet from BETA. When will they be released?

Big thanks to the Mint team!

Edit by Clem: If everything goes well, tomorrow.

  17. Updated three old laptops (HP, Dell & Toshiba) and one old desktop (Lenovo) from Mint Xfce 17.2 to 17.3 with no problems at all.
    sudo update-grub worked fine also.
    Excellent work!

  18. I have one spare computer to play with it and every time I put some different Linux flavor on it I find out how much better I like Mint. Although I like LMDE2 the best of all Mint flavors. Thanks for everything.

  19. I have updated the KDE version from 17.2 to 17.3
    Everything works seamlessly.
Thank you Clem and the Team for your hard work.

  20. NEW TO LINUX THANK YOU but i got an old dell gx620 min tower 64 bit 2g ram 40g hd that all i want is to run netfix, hulu, amazon vidios on and surf the net. i had a hard time getting mint 17.2 onto a 2 yr old hp min laptop with no dvd. i loaded with a thumb drive. it is not as fast as i would like it to be. nor was it easy to figure out how to get netflix to run on it. that is all i use these 2 machines for. so my question is… would mint 17.3 xfce be the best for me?

  21. Sorry Clem my mistake. I chose window manager from the menu as I had forgotten where to find it. Nothing happened. I rebooted this morning and found the Panel covering all the screen. I had this happen before so restarted the panel and saw your message about Desktop settings and somehow my WM was not Compiz but xfwm4 so I chose xfwm4 and compton. So far no problems.

  22. Hi,

I have updated from 17.2 (XFCE) to 17.3 beta via command:
    sudo cp -v /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list.bak
    and changed few lines.

My first question is: what are the changes between 17.3 beta and 17.3 full? I seem not to be able to find it anywhere..
And my second question is: right now, I do not see any upgrade available in the mintUpdate menu. Is this normal? If not, how to fix that?

I am pretty new to Linux…

  23. Smooth update from Kde 17.2 to 17.3. The best thing is that… there is nothing to report. Not much dramatic changes in Kde (still we don’t always see the immense work done by the Mint team) but every bit of update strengthen Mint. Installed on my Lenovo laptop and everything freaking work.

Hail to the new King of Desktop !

    Thanks

  24. Thanks, Mint Team for a great job. I was a Fedora user till I tried Mint. Since then I’ve become a Mint user and promoter among friends and colleagues. But I have a disappointing problem: I can’t install it in my laptop Lenovo ideapad 100 14iby that came with W-8.1. Any suggestion It’ll be highly appreciated. Keep up the good work. Martin

  25. Except the following minor problem, the update went well for LM17.2 Xfce, HP Pavilion dv7-ez1053.

I usually wait for isos but this once I decided I’ll try an upgrade. I went by the book, with Update Manager, there were some warnings about not being able to install because of xorg dependencies, decided to grab the console, some 10-15 packages (including graphics drivers) needed to be uninstalled. The rest went well, rebooted, X crashed. Tried switching to nouveau, nothing.

Safe mode, did *nothing* except try to fix broken packages (while enabling networking), resumed normal boot, mdm was working(!) but couldn’t move mouse, click, keyboard off as well. The annoyance was the need for hard reboot.

Used live USB 17.2 to go online, search a bit, apparently I had no X input libraries (everything until X worked). So I did “apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-all-lts-vivid” and all went well.

Now everything seems to work. Grub still says 17.2, but I couldn’t care if it says Windows — I know what’s under the hood. here’s also some ACPI PCC message during boot, but I understand it is safe to ignore.

Thank you, Clem&team, and a Happy New Year to you and everyone here.

  26. Has the problem of constant rebooting with MSI computers been solved with v17.3 or 18.
Mint 16 works fine as do various “unofficial versions of Mint. This suggests the problem is within Mint rather than Ubutu. I know so many people who have abandoned Linux because of this problem.

  27. A lot of thanks to Mint team and to Clem personally for a great job!!!

Clem, let me also express rapture about your wallpaper pictures from Alps! They look great!

  28. I tried to upgrade my ASUS VM-62 double boot Windows/Linux Mint from mint 17.1 to 17.3. Now I am stuck in a login loop, meaning that after login, I get back to the login screen. I can get to a terminal by using CTRL-ALT-F1.
I tried a few things to get it working, but nothing worked yet. Any help is highly appreciated.

  29. @Robin Wilkin : this problem originates from Ubuntu, and is still not completly solved. The issue appears only with some MSI-boards combined with some AMD-APU’s. I happen to run a MSI A88Xi ITX board with a AMD A10-7850 APU, and never had any issue. AFAIK it only happens with the A4-A6 dualcore APU’s, not with A8-A10 quadcores, moreover, most likely if virtualisation is set in BIOS-uEFI.
Mint Team is already putting a great distro on the table, but you can’t expect them to clean all the bugs their ‘parent’ produces.

    Cheers

  30. Thank you developers for another Mint edition. It is really the best distro for general use, works pretty much out of the box (in my case only laptop fan issues are a big deal, it spins up at 80 degrees celsius an then never stops until shutdown or reboot, but I hope it will be solved in the future). Thank you again, and I wish you all kinds of success in the future, to all you people involved in Mint.

  31. Linux Mint KDE updated flawlessly. I was hoping the “suspend” bug would get fixed. No such luck. Suspend brings back a screen covered with bizarre triangles. 🙁

  32. I upgraded one of my pcs to Rosa KDE successfully. Then on the second machine it looks like lsb_release shows 17.3 and libre office for example upgraded to 5 from 4.4 but almost all KDE apps shows old 4.14.2 version and even when I execute apt-get dist-upgrade from the command line it does not show newer 4.14.13 version of the apps as it did for the first PC. KDE version got stuck in 4.14.2

  33. Hey, I sent you a donation in December but it doesn’t appear here. I don’t care about being put on the list of donors, but I would like to know if you ever received my money (60 EUR). Regards, Andre

Edit by Clem: Hi Andre, many thanks we received your 3rd donation on the 2015-12-07. It doesn’t appear here because the monthly news, show the donations received for the previous month, so you in these December News you’re seeing the donations for November. We’ll post the January news (with the December donations) in the days to come. Note that you can also review all your donations and your donor information within the donor interface. You should have received credentials with your first donation. I’ll send you new ones by email right now. Many thanks for supporting us and my apologies for the confusion (it is quite confusing) 🙂
