Many thanks to our donors, sponsors and to all the people who support our project.
Cinnamon Menu
The new Cinnamon menu received symbolic category icons.
This was made possible thanks to the new XApp Symbolic Icons (XSI) initiative.
Linux Mint 22.3 ‘Zena’
The codename for Linux Mint 22.3 is Zena.
We covered some of the new features included in 22.3 on this blog:
- System information tool
- System admin tool
- New Cinnamon menu
- Wayland-compatible keyboard/IM handling
- Improved on-screen keyboard
There are many more… the ability to pause file operations in Nemo, or snapshots in Timeshift, text messaging in Warpinator, Always-on night light, template management, per-app panel notification indicators… etc.
We’re very close to a release now. Most of the projects have been tagged and packaged in 22.3’s repositories.
We’re preparing a BETA release for the first half of this month.

where is kernel option in update manager in lmde, is it missing or purposely hidden? i mainly want it for cleaning up old kernel, its easier, also if possible expose backport kernel there? also expose backport repo in software manager? tbh the only thing i want from repo is only kernel & mesa. please consider this request. tq.
With LMDE I believe it is not there. You need to download Synaptic Package Manager and deal with Kernels there. All to do with Debian base.
Hello, guys, how are you? I hope you’re doing well!
It would be interesting for the new Cinnamon menu not to be “locked” to the menu icon. What do I mean by that?
I wish I could choose the position in which the menu appears, regardless of where the menu icon is. For example, the menu icon is on the left in the default position, but I want the floating window of the menu to appear in the bottom center of the screen. Having this type of choice makes us users more consistent with how we use the system.
Hi, Clem, one question, if you have the time: are you guys considering the addition of native transparency and blur functionality to Cinnamon? I know that that shouldn’t be the default since LM needs to run on many types of computers, many with poor hardware, but at least an option to turn it on for those who want it? I know the effects can be enabled with extensions, but right now none of those are consistent across the board: some enable transparency on the panels only, not on the menu, and on the menu but not on windows, etc. I’m talking about something native, polished and complete.
I just wanna know if it’s on the roadmap. Thanks in advance.
I’ve been wanting this, too, for so many years that I’ve lost count. I know it’s already partially implemented (you can activate it by just making the right css calls within themes), but it’s so glitchy and slow that it’s basically unusable. My guess (which admittedly may be totally wrong) is that it would need some kind of GL implementation within Cinnamon in order for it to be fast enough for real use. The extensions that you mention currently just make a copy of the part of the desktop image that’s behind the panel or menu, blur it, and then use it as the background for that panel or menu. It’s not dynamic enough to actually show any active desktop/window content being blurred behind the panel or menu. But yeah, this would finally bring Cinnamon into the 21st century, visually.
Actually I would also love to see that in the future too.
And yes, something optional, or even maybe not, there is MATE as a less demanding option.
Thanks for work and the updates ! Mint rocks !
Native blur and transparency would be wonderful indeed.
I’m happy to stick with a unblurred non-transparent screen.
Can’t imagine why it would add extra polish.
@Jeremy Boden:
That’s your preference and it’s perfectly fine, but that’s what options are for, so that people can choose whatever they like the most. And yes, transparency and blur are two things that many people would like to be built into Cinnamon, so the DE can have a modern look and feel to it. Cinnamon is great and all, but it has a kinda outdated look by this point, and that’s an opinion many people share. It has already adopted rounded corners, so the next logical step would be transparency and blur, IMO. You like them and have the hardware for them? Turn them on. You don’t? Turn them off.
Choice is the important word here.
I get people like the idea of blurred transparency but stop trying to sell it as “modern”. It’s been around forever, Cinnamon just doesn’t support it. Terms like modern seem to get thrown around anytime someone wants something as if that will make it more important.
@JosephM:
“Modern” is just a term, like any other term, and I’m not personally using it to promote something that I want, I just really feel that transparency and blur do make desktops look “modern”, in the sense that they’re pretty, clean, like glass, I don’t know how else to put it, so I use the term “modern” because it’s something most people can recognize and associate with that idea, that’s it.
Linux Mint Cinnamon is my favorite distro in the world, but I do think that the desktop looks a little outdated without blurred transparency. I know that’s just an opinion, not a fact, I know, but I also think that a great deal of people want at least the option. Of course, that’s entirely up to you, guys, nobody is paying you to do anything so you don’t owe anything to any of us, I just wanted to know if you’re considering it for the future, that’s all. 🙂
JosephM – People consider it “modern” (whether it is or not), because the most recent versions of Windows and MacOS make heavy use of it. And it does bring a bit of modern sophistication to the look of the desktop in DE’s that use it. I know that Cinnamon has used transparency for a long time, but the blur part has always been missing. To me, having transparency is totally pointless without the option to blur it, because any hardline objects or text behind a transparent menu, for example, will obscure the text on the menu and make it unreadable. Blur mitigates that problem very effectively, making transparency more usable and beautiful.
@Mike F I agree 100% on using transparency without it. It just destroys readability.
Please no, don’t ruin cinnamon by adding that useless visual noise.
@Daniel:
Nobody will be “ruining” Cinnamon. Options are that, “options”, meaning you can turn them on or off, nobody would be forcing you to use transparency and/or blur, in case it gets implemented (fingers crossed 😉).
Also, what’s “useless visual noise” to you, it’s actually beautiful for others, so please, at least try to have an open mind about more options being added so more people can feel at home, not just you.
at Daniel…100% …. more useless overhead and possible slppy coding.
What do people think of the Blur Cinnamon extension that’s already available?
https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/extensions/view/104
@François Blais:
Great extension, and I thank the developer, but its effect is inconsistent across the DE and blur performance is pretty bad. It would be better if Cinnamon supported transparency and blur natively and globally across the whole DE, where every nook and cranny could have it enabled (if the user wants to, obviously, nobody is asking for them to be forced or even be the default).
Interestingly, Cinnamon (Muffin?) already supports transparency adjustment on windows via hotkeys and works well, but the second you close the window and reopen it, the property goes away and it’s solid again. And it’s only on windows, there’s no GUI for doing that on panels, the menu, tooltips or popup menus.
Continuing my previous comment, something like this concept, for instance:
https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/1p55rjm/cinnamon_redesign_concept_cleaner_more_modern/
This would be awsome! @Minntteam.
Thanks for your work!
Is it possible to opening the Cinnamon menu not to block OSD and app switching?
Good news, I’m waiting for the release
n1ce work!
Thanks for all in Linux Mint Team!!
Hello Mint team,
I love the new menu – it looks fresh and modern. However, the icons for application categories feel a bit too muted compared to the previous version. Is it possible for me to replace them with the colored icons from before? As they stand now, without color they look somewhat pale.
Agreed, it is yet another “loss of color” and everything becoming more black and white.
I absolutely hate symbolic icons, I cannot tell any one of them apart.
Unfortunately the whole Linux world seems obsessed with making everything symbolic and flat…
If this is the only option in the new Menu, I’ll have to go into the Menu source code and figure out how to bring back the color icons.
In the September monthly news Clem did write “The categories can use fullcolor icons like they did in the past” and gave a screenshot of same, so hopefully that will still apply?.
I tend to agree. I preferred the color icons for the categories. The symbolic ones feel a little out of place in this case.
When I have an additional monitor connected with an hdmi cable, autologin in Linux Mint 22.2 does not work. Lightdm forces the user to enter a password. cat /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf [Place:*] user-session=cinnamon autologin-guest=false Autologin-user=Jordan autologin-user-timeout=0 autologin-session=lightdm-autologin
Thanks for all your hard work. Looking forward to this release!
Very nice menu that feels complete. These new features make the OS upscale. I am hoping that we get these changes in LMDE. Thank you
Will there be a Wayland compatible on-screen-keyboard in this release? Onboard is awesome in x11, but unfortunately it does not work in Wayland.
Yes, osk and layout switching will work in Wayland sessions.
The new menu is looking good. Really looking forward to using it! Thanks for your hard work.
Hi Clem
Would it be possible as part of LM22.3 to fix the issue in the update manager where the automatic removal of old kernels no longer works? This used to be fine and I have seen a bug has been raised for this, https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdate/issues/938
Looking forward to the new release
“the ability to pause file operations in Nemo” – awesome feature, thanks for bringing it to Nemo! 🙂 I hoped we’d get this one for quite a while now. Looking forward to testing the BETA.
Good to know about the updates as always.
My question is: There is a possibility of the XFCE version be updated to 4.20? I found weird when i found we are still using the 4.18 edition
Looks good. You guys do excellent work. I’ve no complaints, I’m a simple old fart. 🙂
Hello Clem and the team,
I really appreciate the ongoing development of mint. My only concern is that the new Cinnamon Menu for Mint 22.3 is starting to look rather complicated and a bit over stuffed. i.e. its starting to look a bit too visually messy, too many options & icons. Also dare I say this but its starting to look a bit like previous Windows menus. I happen to think the present menu in 22.2 is totally fine and sometimes in life “Less is More” and if it ain’t broken don’t fix it. Really not sure the new 22.3 menu is an improvement, sorry!
You can choose to hide most of the new stuff if you like it simpler.
I agree. It would be nice to have the option to keep the old menu.
Happy Holidays, Linux Mint users and developers! Like many of you, I am looking forward to the upcoming version of Linux Mint. As we are so close to a beta release, I do not know if this would be possible for 22.3; however, I thought I would ask. Currently, I am moving several clients from their old Windows 10 installations to Linux Mint. Of course, users are most comfortable when this new (Linux Mint) environment mirrors what they are accustomed to experiencing under Windows. Oddly, I am describing the Cinnamon Screen Saver. For years, I have had client machines configured to blank their screen (saver) after three (3) minutes of inactivity, followed by enabling their monitor’s low-power mode after twenty (20) minutes of inactivity, as an example. The time-based details are not as important as the ability to have the Cinnamon Screen Saver allow for a blank screen saver option, in addition to its current options. Again, I know we are quite close to a beta release, but, I wanted to put this out there, to see if this addition would be possible to the Cinnamon Screen Saver, either for the 22.3 release and/or another future release. Of course, I want to thank everyone who works for, contributes to, etc., this great Linux distribution and wish everyone a very happy holiday season!
Hello,
will it be possible to have a keyboard layout other than English in Wayland?
Great new menu, BUT “Favorites” and “Recent Files” are inconsistent with the software categories: they should be separated from “Software Stuff” by at least one line. Or at least rename “Favorites” to “Favorite Files”.
More difficult, but extremely useful IMHO, would be to have recent files and favorites somehow tied to the app that generated them, as Windows does in various ways from Win7 onwards. I think it’s a more file/task-oriented approach rather than current app-centric one.
Folder names could have a new property. Title undercoloring. 🙏
What does that mean? What are you actually asking for?
Care to explain your wish?
Thank you for this information on Mint’s progress.
I recently watched a YouTube video in french about Mint made by a young woman named Gwên.
She was right about at least one important point:
When Mint Upgrade requires an update, the screen no longer displays whether other updates, such as security patches, are available. A beginner might indeed think: “If only Mint Upgrade needs an update, it’s not urgent, it can wait”… And his machine would cease to be updated from then on.
Regards.
Looks good! With the recent changes the new menu now seems almost as good as the old one. Thanks for listening to our feedback!
Hello Linux Mint Team,
I am excited about new release with new things.
Could you please add a dedicated section for Favorite Apps in the menu? Currently, favorite icons appear near the Lock/Restart/Shutdown buttons, which can clutter the menu. A separate Favorites area, similar to KDE, would improve usability.
Thank you for considering this request.
With all the new exciting stuff coming, please change the default black wallpaper to bring some freshness to the desktop. At least use a different, brighter colour pls. Maybe it’s a silly request but “people buy with eyes”.
All the green ones are better looking that this black one. There could be even competition to supply new wallpaper with every release of LM. And a popular vote to choose one.
Hi all, I love LM, my question is, what do you think its the most significant update in 22.3 and why???
Clem – Please would you consider removing from the Update Manager automation the line that says “automatic removal of old kernels” just until that feature is actually working?
Because a beginner might set it on and find it doesn’t work and then might think he had made some mistake.
Pjotr has added a note about this on his Easy Linux Tips site:
The tab Automation also shows a feature which does come in handy: Automatic Maintenance. I advise to switch it ON (Remove obsolete kernels and dependencies), because it has been safely and prudently configured to avoid causing any damage to your system. Note: This feature is currently broken (and has been so for some time)!”
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/mintupdate.html
The new menu looks nice and all, but is the old one present in 22.2 be kept?
Give us the option to revert to the old icons in the Menu categories. I liked them.
When the menu is opened, the default category is “All Applications.” Is it possible to set “Favorites” as the default when opening? That would be great!
You can do this in Cinnamenu!
I know, I’m using that at the moment. But I would like to use the original menu in the future if it meets my requirements. Thanks for the info anyway.
Hello
Just noticed this: Ubuntu, Linux Mint and others are ‘victim’ of a botched update to CUPS. It is no longer possible to print with LM22.x. No fix on the horizon. And googling (or DuckDuckGoing…) does not show any workable fix either. Wow…
François Proulx, Longueuil, Québec, Canada
Ahhhhhh!!! Sorry for the false alarm.
This was a physical problem: last Monday, I disconnected and took my desktop to the kitchen table for it’s yearly cleaning. I did not notice that one of “my big flat foot” (as per somebody at home) pulled the printer power cord out from the printer. I could not print because the @#$% thing was off. Strangely (“sigh”) every thing works as advertised now.
Again sorry
François Proulx, Longueuil, Québec, Canada
In my opinion this new Cinnamon menu, It’s a great quantum leap forward. I love it. Best Linux Mint ever !!!
Excellent work. Linux Mint has been my main distribution for 5 years. Thank you CLEM for providing us with an excellent operating system.
Wonderful, good news for Cinnamon users! But could Xfce users also get a Xmas gift: Xfce 4.20? I know Xubuntu Lts is 4.18 but the next version of Mint will come in half a year, 1.5 year after xfce 4.20 was made…
Debian 13 is sporting XFCE 4.20 by the way.
Hi Mint Team,
I’m very happy about this new version, expectations are high 😊
Please show some love to KolourPaint and KegaFusion, these programs really brighten up my life 🌟
To infinity and beyond (^o^)//
Kega Fusion is proprietary, and hasn’t been updated in a long time. Try using Ares instead.
Linux Mint 22.2 works brilliantly on the 6.17.0-1006-oem kernel.
Different user here, but also want to chime in that the newest mainline kernel (6.18.0-061800-generic) is working very well for me on Linux Mint 22.2.
Regarding Wayland, is there any progress on getting something like auto-type working with local password managers? I need to be able to use something like a local installation of KeepassXC to enter usernames/passwords in browsers, local applications and local files.
Dear Clem and Linux MInt team. I want to report two issues under LM 22.2 to prevent them in LM 22.3
– In LM 22.2 System monitor > File system tab, not showing correctly Used space. I mean once the green lines are on the left, next time they are on the right side.
– I also have a triband wifi 7 router and Intel BE200 wifi card (I have a 13 Gen Intel processor). On LM 22.1 with LTS 6.8.0-88-generic 5Ghz work great with low latency, but in LM 22.2 with HWE 6.14 5 Ghz, 6 Ghz and MLO show serious degradation. I also updated linux-firmware, still no benefits compared to LM 22.1. I understand that maybe full 6 Ghz support in linux is still under development .
Best regards, Svetlomir Frengov
* Improved Wayland support is important, as the ageing X11 system unfortunately has a wide range of security flaws.
* As long as it is possible to switch back to the previous menu, this change will not cause too much disruption.
* From a security perspective, it would be important and easy to implement to finally support NTS and DOT or DOH by default.
another request. a better notification applet please, preferably notification are nested by apps like android notification, obviously need timestamp too.
Hello I am trying Gigi with wayland just now
It opens normally for the time but with the wrong keyboard not mine
In progress
This looks really slick been a few years since I saw Linux Mint
I love the new Cinnamon menu, can something like that be done for Xfce?
You should ask this to the XFCE developers at xfce.org.
Actually, whiskermenu is quite configurable.
Mint’s flagship is Cinnamon, and I doubt they’ll want to develop a new panel menu for XFCE.
But it’s up to them of course.
That’s the job of Xfce developers. The Linux Mint team only develops Cinnamon and other Mint-related projects. Xfce and MATE are independent projects so you ask them directly.
I still prefer the current menu; the new one still doesn’t convince me. Besides, it has many new features I’ll never use, because I only use it as an app menu. I hope that through the menu settings, it can be made the same as, or very similar to, the current menu, because otherwise I’ll always hate this new menu, no matter how modern it is.
Me too

I liked the old icons for the categories in the menu. Will there be an option to keep them?
From version 22.2, is it possible to upgrade to 22.3 beta?
G’day. The Wayland “team” is mapping what will no longer work when it becomes a viable no experimental session option? I’m a happy X user myself but kinda worried about the lack of automation and accessibility tools in Wayland and those folks redeem these niche and unnecessary. Also, asking because I’m not in the know, does Mint use wlroots?
Is it possible to add legacy Nvidia drivers such as nvidia 340, 390, and other to support with new Linux Mint as possible, as Kelebek do (https://launchpad.net/~kelebek333/+archive/ubuntu/nvidia-legacy) or as I seen in https://github.com/MeowIce/nvidia-legacy
It would be nine to have user friendly method to support old NVIDIA GPUs with the current version of Linux Mint.
Hello Linux Mint Team,
first of all, thank you for the continuous work on Linux Mint and for keeping the distribution accessible and user-friendly, especially for users with older hardware.
I would like to kindly ask whether it would be possible to support NVIDIA legacy GPUs by default in the Driver Manager, so that these systems would work out of the box as well.
Currently, this is already achievable through external solutions, for example:
* the PPA maintained by ~kelebek333
* the community project nvidia-legacy: https://github.com/MeowIce/nvidia-legacy
These provide legacy NVIDIA driver packages that could integrate well with Mint and allow older NVIDIA cards (e.g. Fermi, Tesla, or even older generations) to be used reliably on modern Mint releases.
Integrating similar support directly into the Driver Manager would have several advantages:
* improved out-of-the-box experience for users with older NVIDIA hardware
* reduced need for third-party PPAs and manual configuration
* smoother upgrades for users coming from older Mint versions
* extended hardware lifespan, which aligns well with Mint’s philosophy
With Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena”, such built-in legacy driver handling would be especially welcome, as many users still rely on older but perfectly usable NVIDIA-based systems.
Thank you very much for considering this request, and for your continued dedication to the Linux Mint project.
I’m really looking forwards to 22.3, but can you tell me what’s happened to the Linux mint website? it seems to be down.
What URL are you using?
Works for me, seems to be something on your end.
Finally, it works. Thanks for your reply.
Thank You!
I want to thank the Linux mint team for all their hard work in producing such an enjoyable and reliable OS.
I found mint 2 years ago while learning to code and I can honestly say it has been an incredibly enjoyable snappy system to use and I no longer use windows unless I really have to.
Much Appreciated!
Many Thanks!
Alex
Earlier I mentioned a mistake in the UPDATE MANAGER, where automatic removal of old kernels does not work.
On MINT FORUMS someone has written a fix, Could the mint team use this to make the feature work again?

Hi,
This issue is discussed on the Github (see https://github.com/linuxmint/mintupdate/issues/938), and from what I understand (not very familiar with it), work has started on the issue (from mtwebster commits).
Cheers

Installed Mint 22.3 Beta (Mate) this morning. Based on my limited testing at this point, everything looks normal.
By the way, why GIMP version 2.x in Mint 22.3 while it is version 3.x in LMDE 7?
Jerry
Which mirror did you use? I can’t find it!
No need! I found it! https://mirror.raiolanetworks.com/linuxmint/iso/testing/
Hello
In LM 22..3 Cinnamon we seem to have lost the ability to set a compose key. This is a non-starter for me. Unless it is somewhere new, I can’t find a way.
Regards
François Proulx, Longueuil, Québec, Canada
Jerry, here’s my understanding of the situation (and someone please correct me if I’m wrong): The reason for the difference in GIMP versions is that they are using different bases. Linux Mint 22.x is based on Ubuntu 24.04 (which in turn is based on where Debian Sid was at the beginning of 2024), which has GIMP 2.10. LMDE 7 is based on Debian 13, which was released in August 2025 and has GIMP 3.0. As they are both Long-Term Support releases, they pretty much stick with the versions present at that moment in time, with some exceptions for security updates, bug fixes, and some backporting. That means that Linux Mint 22.x uses the GIMP 2.10 that Debian had in the beginning of 2024, while LMDE 7 uses the GIMP 3.0 that Debian had in the middle of 2025.
Under normal situations, the Ubuntu-based Linux Mint has more recent versions of software than LMDE does. But that reverses for a short time when a new version of LMDE is first released, but that doesn’t last long. In this case, in about 6 months or so, Linux Mint 23 will be released, based on Ubuntu 26.04, at which point it will have newer software versions than LMDE until LMDE 8 is released in a couple years.
Mint 22.3 is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, which has older packages.
LMDE 7 is directly based on Debian 13, which got released late summer this year and has newer packages than Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, which got released early in 2024.
That’s why the GIMP package is older on Mint 22.3, like all other packages.
Since no betas of 22.3 have been mentioned yet in this blog, how did u find the mirror for beta build?
There is a link for 22.3 in Distrowatch, left hand column under “Latest Distributions” if anyone is interested.
Hey Jugih,
I think this is what you’re looking for: https://mirror.raiolanetworks.com/linuxmint/iso/testing/
How to revert the new menue?
remove the cinnamon menu applet and add cinnamenu applet, config it to your liking.
Just downloaded LM 22.3 Beta today 19 Dec 25. So the menu has changed, just like it did in Windows from 10 to 11, and I have exactly the same reaction. I now have to reset my muscle memory, although I have found ways around it. I just don’t see the reasoning to change it. It seems change for changes sake. It’s the same problem when the “traditional” panel disappeared from set up and we had to go through convoluted actions to restore stuff. Just stop changing things for the sake of it, PLEASE. There is nothing to gain from it IMO.
if you don’t like the new one, remove the cinnamon menu applet and add cinnamenu applet, config it to your liking, it’s not really a big deal.
@Victor. No it’s not a big deal, but it is unnecessary change. These are the sort of reasons Windows users abandoned that abortion called 11.
LM 22.3 beta … system settings does not remember its window size. I stretched it to the right, close, system settings goes back to its original size.
Hi Jugih,
This is for you: https://mirror.raiolanetworks.com/linuxmint/iso/testing/
Linux Mint just keep getting better. One thing about this blog page… can you make the list of sponsors organize in a table with 2-3 columns? Its a bit annoying to scroll for a minute because of the lists 🙂
Hi and thank you all for pointing out the beta dl-link. Of course i found it previously already, but my question was how are they there, as no mentioned of betas from dev has arisen yet.
It is necessary to wait many hours in order the uploaded ISO file (beta or stable) to be synchronized with all download mirrors. After this sync, the authors can publish the announcement.
It is just a practical sequence to avoid dead download links.
Ok! Thanks Haris for clearing this out!
