This is the BETA release for Linux Mint 21.2 “Victoria” Xfce Edition.

Linux Mint 21.2 is a long term support release which will be supported until 2027. It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop even more comfortable to use.

System requirements:

  • 2GB RAM (4GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
  • 20GB of disk space (100GB recommended).
  • 1024×768 resolution (on lower resolutions, press ALT to drag windows with the mouse if they don’t fit in the screen).

Upgrade instructions:

  • This BETA release might contain critical bugs, please only use it for testing purposes and to help the Linux Mint team fix issues prior to the stable release.
  • Upgrade instructions will be published after the stable release of Linux Mint 21.2.
  • It will be possible to upgrade from this BETA to the stable release.
  • It will also be possible to upgrade from Linux Mint 21 and Linux Mint 21.1.

Bug reports:

  • Bugs in this release should be reported on Github at https://github.com/linuxmint/mint21.2-beta.
  • Create one issue per bug.
  • As described in the Linux Mint Troubleshooting Guide, do not report or create issues for observations.
  • Be as accurate as possible and include any information that might help developers reproduce the issue or understand the cause of the issue:
    • Bugs we can reproduce, or which cause we understand are usually fixed very easily.
    • It is important to mention whether a bug happens “always”, or “sometimes”, and what triggers it.
    • If a bug happens but didn’t happen before, or doesn’t happen in another distribution, or doesn’t happen in a different environment, please mention it and try to pinpoint the differences at play.
    • If we can’t reproduce a particular bug and we don’t understand its cause, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to fix it.
  • The BETA phase is literally a bug squashing rush, where the team is extremely busy and developers try to fix as many bugs as fast as possible.
  • There usually are a huge number of reports and very little time to answer everyone or explain why a particular report is not considered a bug, or won’t get fixed. Don’t let this frustrate you, whether it’s acknowledged or not, we appreciate everyone’s help.

Hi everyone,

I’d like to thank all of you for your support and your donations.

The development cycle for Linux Mint 21.2 was closed a few days ago. Most of the projects have been tagged, built and added to the repositories for the upcoming release.

Xfce was updated to version 4.18.

CJS was rebased on GJS 1.74 / Mozjs 102.

XDG Desktop Portal support was added to all supported desktops (Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce). Among other things this brings a global dark mode setting.

This dark mode setting affects applications which support it and lets you choose between three options:

  • Prefer light
  • Prefer dark
  • Let the applications decide

Among the many apps which support it, some are light by default (Firefox, Xed, Thingy, Xreader) and some are dark by default (Xviewer, Pix). The setting is also supported by many Flatpaks and GNOME/LibAdwaita applications.

Cinnamon 5.8 is getting gestures support for window management, workspace management, tiling and media controls. Gestures will be supported on touchpads, touchscreens and tablets.

The Software Manager was given a UI refresh, better scoring/sorting algorithms and a tuned package list.

A few additional visual changes were implemented in preparation for Linux Mint 21.2.

Tooltips

We had been planning on redesigning our tooltips for a while. The main reason was that they lacked consistency and looked slightly different depending on where they came from (GTK2, GTK3, Cinnamon). They also featured a grey border which didn’t look clean around their yellow background.

Looking around us at other operating systems, Linux themes and what was done on the Web, we found that almost nobody used the traditional yellow color anymore. We tried a few things and eventually settled on what we think looks the best for us. Rather than using yellow, black or grey tooltips we decided to make them use the accent color.

We fixed the consistency issues across the various GTK versions and Cinnamon. We also took inspiration from Adwaita and made our tooltips bigger, rounder and with larger margins.

In Cinnamon we also added a bit of space between the applets and their tooltips so they wouldn’t be stuck to the panel.

Notifications

Cinnamon notifications will also be using the accent color.

And whenever possible they will prefer symbolic icons.

Although these changes are quite small they continue to make the desktop look and feel cleaner and more modern.

In Linux Mint 21.1 efforts were made to make the accent colors more special, more vivid but less used. This continues this trend. Notifications and tooltips are transient elements which highlight an event or a feature. They should be beautiful and noticeable.

Secureboot

An update in Ubuntu’s shim-signed broke the compatibility of all Linux Mint (and past Ubuntu and derivative) ISOs with secureboot.

If because of this you are unable to install Linux Mint, for now we recommend to disable secureboot.

We are currently working on a fix for future ISOs and taking this opportunity to review the way we produce our images.

Upcoming Releases

We’re planning three releases for the Summer (or Winter if you’re in the South Hemisphere):

  • Linux Mint 21.2
  • An EDGE ISO release with kernel 5.19
  • LMDE 6, based on the upcoming Debian 12 (set for release in June)

In order for all releases to get the 21.2 changes, they should come out in that order, with up to a month separating the Mint 21.2 and the LMDE 6 releases.

No ETAs have been decided yet.

Warpinator

Work continues on hardening the security aspects of Warpinator.

The tool recently received support for landlock and bubblewrap. These technologies were used to guarantee folder isolation, basically making Warpinator technically unable to write outside of its dedicated download folder.
