Linux Mint 6 “Felicia” x64 RC1 released!

The team is proud to announce the release of Linux Mint 6 x64 RC1.

Introduction to Linux Mint 6 x64:

This x64 edition of Linux Mint 6 is almost identical to the Main Edition but compiled for 64 bit processors (Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core 2 Quad, AMD Athlon X2 64 and all x86-64 compliant processors). It comes with all the improvements featured in Linux Mint 6 Main Edition.

There are a few differences however:

  • java is using openjdk instead of sun
  • openoffice.org-base is absent

System requirements and known issues:

A minimum of 512MB of RAM is recommended. Once installed the system works fine with as low as 256MB RAM. The installation process deals with 2.5GB of data compressed on a 700MB CD and it can hang or fail on systems with less than 512MB RAM. If you have between 256MB and 512MB RAM you may have to try to install several times.

As an RC (Release Candidate) this release is targeted at developers and beta-testers who want to help Linux Mint find and correct bugs before the stable release. Please do not use this release as your main desktop. For a complete list of known issues read the Release Notes.

Feedback and bug reports:

The testing will last for 2 weeks. Please report any bug you may find via the Linux Mint 6 x64 RC1 Bug Thread and give us your feedback on this release by posting a comment right here on the blog.

  1. Thanks for this GREAT Version of Felicia, everythink works for the moment like a charm for me.

  2. Glad to see it!
    Two questions:
    1) Are you planning to use sun’s java at all for x86_64?
    2) Similar question in regards to openoffice.org-base, will it be included in future release?

  3. Thanks Clem

Downloaded and burnt to cd > No problems

Ran live cd and again no problems, booted to desktop > No problems

Ran the install and went through the 7 sections, chose to manually partition. > No problems encountered

Rebooted and again back to desktop with > No problems

Installed drivers for my ati x1600 pci express card 512mb, rebooted > No problems

Ran mint update and 179 level 3 updates installed and rebooted > No Problems

I have been running now for a couple of hours and all is working well so far, grand job

  4. I have a 64-bit machine, but I’ve always run a 32-bit OS on it. I’ve been using mint for a while now and I really like it. I’m wondering if I switch to the x64 version what the pros and cons would be? Is there some software or drivers I would be missing that hasn’t been written for 64 bit architectures? Cheers.

  5. I love it! I’m using it on my main desktop, even though you warn against it (I’m hard headed), and really have had the same experience as the 32 bit version.

I’ll keep you posted if I run into any problems.

  6. locutus: Distrowatch stated by the past that they would not report on any x64 edition releases. They also mentioned that they would not cover RC releases for community editions. The reason mentioned was that Linux Mint was releasing too often and provided too many editions.

neggard: not yet, but we’re hoping to have one ready for the stable release.

luksol: It’s too soon to say and it also depends on Sun. Right now we prefer to use the OpenJDK implementation because the Sun one isn’t on par with its 32 bit equivalent.

  7. Does this release included toshiba_acpi module ? I’m using now Ubuntu 8.10 x64 on a Toshiba Satellite L300-1AM notebook and I have problems with FN+F keys, with acpi module which is not in kernel 2.6.27. I saw Linux Mint installed on a friend’s desktop. I like this distribution and I want to install on my notebook, but I need to know if I can install without problems.
    Thank you.

  8. I also have a Toshiba Satellite L300 notebook; I’m running the 32bit Linux Mint. I actually got it a few days ago – I’m new to Linux. What are teh advantages of installing 64bit (My laptop processor is dual core 64bit).

Also, if I install this RC1, can use the software updater program that Mint comes with the upgrade to the Final Release of Mint 6 (Felecia)? Or will I have to download the final version and burn as an iso and install from there?

    Thanks,

    Adel

  9. Thanks Clem,

Absolutely fantastic, same as the 32bit version.

Installed here on a DELL Inspiron 6400 Laptop. Dual processor 64bit.

Having trouble finding anything to complain about.
Love the partitioner Graphical display…essential for us ¨novices¨ who have to think carefully about what we are doing on a duel boot system.

    Keep up the good work.

    Gordon

  10. MMMMM, Tried installing the 64 bit keeps crashing out without any CLUES, funny the 32 bit also wont install either.
I dont have any problems with mint 5. THe mint 6 installed on my laptop without problems.
I have left a few messages giving as many details as I can but havent had a response. I suppose I will have to wait until may for mint 7.

  11. Hi Clem,

Pq nao tem servidor de download brasileiro?

Why isn’t there a download mirror (server) in Brazil?

    —————–
Me: Downloaded and installed this Linux Mint 6 RC1 x64 – Felicia.
So far, no problem found yet. I deleted version 5 x64 Elyssa.
    AMD64 bit

  12. At long last Googleearth works properly on my x64 machine! This is really great.

Even my favourite browser Opera for AMD64 could be installed from their site: the software manager of Linux Mint doesn’t function yet.

  13. I’ve just installed Linux Mint Felicia and I love it except for one problem: I don’t seem to be able to get my wireless to work. My wireless card is Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection. I’ve tried downloading drivers from the HP and Intel sites (I’m using an HP Pavilion laptop), but so far cannot get anything to install and Linux does not seem to recognize the existence of the wireless card. Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

  14. AMD Phenom 9850
    Nvidia 9800GT 1024MB
    ASUS M3N78-VM (Nforce 7-based)
    4GB 8500 DDR2

Works just great for me. So far I only tested it Live. Didn’t even bother burning a disk, just booted from a USB pendrive. But will do some more testing, later 🙂

    Thanks guys/gals.

  15. For those of you asking about the advantages of a 64 bit OS, the main advantage is being able to have over 4 gig of RAM. Some people also claim 64 bit OS is faster. Personally I like to use it because we need to make the leap eventually and as more people adopt it, it will get better. Thanks for the release, I will download the torrent tonight when I get home and help seed.

  16. Why cant we include the updates? It seems with mint that a lot of packages need updating as soon as you get it. Why cant they be included at install time? – everyone will update as soon as its installed if they have the sense ( and bandwidth ).Maybe an ‘install over the net’ would be a better option, instead of a 179 outdated packages – think of my mum, her modem will be on for a week after a fresh install of a newly released uber-linux distro. I Still love it 😉

  17. Everything works fine for me. I’m not new to *nix and looks realy good.
The only thing I could complain for the moment is the mintInstall. It doesn’t show if the package is already installed ot not. It will be great to have this feature in the next version.

  18. DenD: It could show that but it would impact the performance and the interface would be less snappy while browsing the applications. That’s the reason why it’s put behind the “versions” button.

  19. Thank you Very Much Clem Mint 6 RC1 is Solid. I loaded Mint 6 “Felicia” x64 RC1 on two recent di ASUS Quad Core motherboards both loaded without the busy box error that plagued me when trying to load Mint 5 64.
Excellent work!!! Thanks Clem and the rest of the mint team

  20. Where is it? The last post here was 1/19 and it’s now 1/29 with still no 64bit final release. Clem! What’s up?! I’m stuck with 4gb ram in my system using a 32bit system that can’t access it all, HELP!
