Monthly News – August 2025

Hello everyone,

Many thanks to our sponsors and to all of you who support the project with your donations.

LMDE 7

Work started on LMDE 7, codename Gigi.

The goal for this release is to bring the following features together:

  • A Debian 13 package base
  • The improvements which shipped with Linux Mint 22.2
  • Support for OEM installations

The OEM support was already implemented during the Mint 22.2 development cycle, so we were able to progress really fast on this. It’s now been tested in real conditions on top of the new package base and it’s working very well.

The new Mint 22.2 features were also ported to LMDE 7.

We’re adapting the libadwaita-1.5 changes to libadwaita-1.7 and re-applying patches at the moment.

Note that i386 is no longer fully supported upstream by Debian 13 so LMDE 7 will only ship for amd64.

The BETA for LMDE 7 will be released this September.

Linux Mint 22.3

Although the latest release came later than expected and we’re currently focused on LMDE 7, we’re still planning on having a Mint 22.3 release in December.

This is going to be a very short release cycle. The priority will be the new version of Cinnamon and shipping some of the important WIP (work in progress / planned features) which were started earlier this year:

  • The new menu
  • The status applet
  • The Wayland-compatible handling for keyboard layouts and input methods

  1. Why Linux mint cannot be based on arch linux or debian sid, such a version based on stable debian should be named server. It needs kernel 6.17 & kernels Ubuntu 6.16, 6.17 are not compatible with Linux Mint and kernel panic pops up

    1. A mint based on arch linux would be hot shit. would be great to taste that. Maybe this will happen someday. That would be awesome.

    2. That would be cool, but with Arch rolling so much all the time, it would be a herculean task to keep everything from breaking. Couple that with AUR being a little wild wild west-y sometimes (and I run 3 Arch systems, so I’m not bad mouthing it, just being honest), and it would be kind of a mess I think. Better just run Cinnamon on Arch and be happy. 😛

    3. Debian Sid would actually be really nice. I just can’t imagine how an Arch Linux base for Linux Mint would look like.

  2. Thanks for another excellent release. Fingerprint integration is a really great step forward for usability. May I suggest a small feature, that could be really helpful for people travelling across timezones? The ability for Mint to be able to geo guess the timezone and apply it automatically. I think KDE uses something called geoclue for it. But I’m not sure how exactly it works.

  3. I am eagerly waiting for LMDE 7! good to know that the beta is releasing this month! i can’t wait to try LMDE 7!!
let me tell you, LMDE is the Masterpiece by the Mint team, you have made it soo easy to use debian, Thank You very much for providing LMDE as a alternative!! LMDE is really your Glory!!

    1. I am new to LMDE -using LMDE6 on a Lenovo laptop with Ryzen 7.
Do you know how the update was done in the past ?
I “migrated” my user data in /home from Linux Mint Cinnamon edition to LMDE6 because of “Inpout/Output error” during installation of the cinnamon edition on the Lenovo.

  4. I love the linux mint and great great Thanks to the team for this wonderful distro.
I just suggest that improve some ui elements like icon theme which feels very old-ish and bring wayland support and we Waiting for new start menu.

    1. Wayland has now been under development for approximately 18 years! As it aimed replace the X Window System (X) with a simpler, modern display server protocol, it is a “corporate” failure as far as I’m concerned, and just don’t want to know. Last time I tried use it, the first thing it did on opening a browser was to crash.

  5. As always, thank you for your great work.

Been on LMD6 for almost a year now and scrapped Windows altogether. Eagerly waiting for Gigi.

  6. LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Mint makes me happy. I like it when people pursue their good goals and get such great projects off the ground.

    Keep it up. Very nice.

  7. Thanks for the hard work, Cleam & team! Upgraded to 22.2 recently and it’s going great for the most part. However, I think there’s a major regression in the new Mint-Y theme, where contrast has become really poor on the dark style. There’s already an open issue about this on GitHub (https://github.com/linuxmint/mint-themes/issues/510). I was wondering whether there are plans to release some kind of hotfix for this soon, or whether we’ll have to wait for LMDE 7 or Mint 22.3 to get this problem sorted.

  8. To unhide the menu in a Terminal window, you need to right-click on the Window or press the Menu key. To unhide the menu in xreader or in Firefox, you need to press the Alt key (and this isn’t documented). To unhide the menu in Nemo, you need to press Alt key or do a right-click on the top of the window. Would it be possible to have the same method to unhide menus in all applications or at least always have a context menu for this?

  9. “The BETA for LMDE 7 will be released this September.”
So was it written incorrectly? It’s already September now.😥

  10. any chance lmde 7 would have working wayland lockscreen & inactive screen display fixed ?, because on lm 22.1 lockscreen didnt work on wayland & i need to set “turn off screen when inactive for” to “never” in power management otherwise itwould just be unresposive blackscreen.

  11. As always, a perfect release—I’m really looking forward to release 22.3 with the new menu and updated status bar.

  12. A huge thank you to the entire Mint team for your hard work and ongoing commitment.

I wanted to share some feedback regarding the latest version of the Mint-Y Dark theme on Linux Mint 22.2. The near-total reduction in contrast makes visually distinguishing UI elements much more difficult at a glance, which harms overall usability. This results in a less user-friendly and more challenging interface.

I hope the team can address this with a fix in an upcoming update.

  13. That’s good news! I use LMDE since version 4.0 (Debbie). For the last six months or so, I have been on the road in other distributions, but I have landed at LMDE again. I’m looking forward to Gigi.

  14. I am a very loyal Linux mint user, I would love to see LMDE have the driver support that the Ubuntu based mint has. I also like that the customizability of Cinnamon is amazing. I tinker with other distros for fun, but never saw from my main Mint distro, but Linux Mint is starting to fall behind in polish. Just an opinion

  15. Is there a problem with Virtual Box and the 6.14.x kernel? Windows 7 and 10 will not boot. I changed back to Kernel 6.8.x and Win 7 and 10 boot just fine.

    1. Installed Virtualbox 7.2.2. Same problem – works with Kernel 6.8.0-79, does not work with 6.14.0-29.

    2. The “known issues” for Linux Mint 22.2 list issues with Kernel 6.14 and Virtualbox. The recommendation is to stay on kernel 6.8.

    1. You can install either XFCE or Mate on LMDE and it will work fine. LMDE includes the Mint themes for XFCE and Mate so it works. They just don’t distribute those versions as ISOs. I always use Mate.

  16. I have used Mint for years, its the best. I tried LMDE for a few months, it was rock solid and personally I would prefer Debian to be the default base system, but I have to say that the two years support cycle sucks, it should be the standard five. Yes, you can upgrade to the next release but reports would suggest that this is pretty iffy. So for now I will stick with the bog standard edition.

  17. You’ve got me curious now. What’s happening with the status applet? I must have missed that in the previous blog posts.

  18. The icon theme needs an update, it looks outdated and hasn’t had a facelift in years, the icon themes are the great forgotten in Linux Mint, many icons are gray, black and white and have an outdated and faded design, other icons have dull colors, I think the color blue is overused in icons, a greater variety of colors should be used, for example the drawing icon is blue, it wouldn’t be if it were a white background with the red pencil, to cite an example.

    1. I don’t disagree but its kinda become the brand of the distro to look old fashioned and do things the old fashioned way. Use another pack not that difficult to do, paper and tela circle works well with both cinnamon and xfce. Or whatever plain flat 2025 vibe pack you can find. They probably have a userbase breathing up their neck with “dont you dare change one thing” thats why it’s stuck in windows 7 look and feel.

  19. Yesterday, I installed LMDE 7 GIGI beta on my computer, and it’s already working great. Many thanks to the Linux Mint team for their excellent work.

  20. With ubuntu switch to sudo rs / rust will lmde be the main version or a ubuntu base? For the regular ubuntu edition I wonder how mint will respond to these changes.

  21. Upgrading to LM 2.2 Cinnamon went smooth and without any issues. I’m giving lectures in different locations and occasionally the presentation-screen is dark after starting the laptop. The only solution so far I have found is restarting the computer and then the mint-logo appears on the presentation-screen. After logging in, all is working well then. I notice that in case the second screen remains dark, the speakers connected to the beamer are working. So this ain’t an HDMI-problem. Has anyone a clue what can go wrong and how to solve such an issue in a quick way (an audience is waiting and I don’t have the time for troubleshooting)?

  22. Installed LMDE 7 BETA. To me, the Cinnamon theme that came up is UGLY! But that is just me. Installed MATE (My preferred DE) and it looks just like Mint 22.2 MATE. Which is what I had in mind!

    1. Virtualbox is missing from software manager. Virtualbox-guest-additions.iso is there though. I assume virtualbox will be included in the final release.

    2. gnome-screenshot, which is installed by default, does not work correctly. When started, it does a full screen shot and does not provide any option for selecting a window or selecting an area.

    3. gnome screenshot has not worked properly for quite a while, certainly it did not work properly under LM22.1
if I select “selected area”, that does not work, I have to go and select “selected area” again then it will work fine

  23. I’m glad to see that a new version of Linux Mint (22.3) will be available in December with new features.

Why didn’t you ever include grid mode in the Cinnamon menu, like Cinnamenu does? And why not offer more options like Cinnamenu? Why not merge the two menus into one? I think Linux Mint users would be delighted. Regarding Wayland support, it works quite well despite a few bugs here and there. Will version 22.3 bring better Wayland support? Will Wayland support be by default in Linux Mint 23? Thanks in advance for your answers.

  24. I tested Wayland on LMDE 7 beta
It seems to work correctly only if you shutdown with hibernation. Otherwise my desk background is black and not reactive.

  25. The Wayland-compatible will be a great security improvement.

Securing NTP by NTS and securing DNS by DOT and DOH will be also important.
