How to upgrade to Linux Mint 21.1

It is now possible to upgrade Linux Mint 21 to version 21.1.

If you’ve been waiting for this we’d like to thank you for your patience.

1. Create a system snapshot

You can use Timeshift to make a system snapshot before the upgrade.

If anything goes wrong, you can easily restore your operating system to its previous state.

Launch Timeshift from the application menu, follow the instructions on the screen to configure it and create a system snapshot.

2. Prepare for the upgrade

  • Disable your screensaver
  • If you installed Cinnamon spices (applets, desklets, extensions, themes), upgrade them from the System Settings

3. Upgrade the operating system

Upgrading to Linux Mint 21.1 is relatively easy.

In the Update Manager, click on the Refresh button to check for any new version of mintupdate or mint-upgrade-info. If there are updates for these packages, apply them.

Launch the System Upgrade by clicking on “Edit->Upgrade to Linux Mint 21.1 Vera”.

Follow the instructions on the screen.

If asked whether to keep or replace configuration files, choose to replace them.

4. Change artwork (optional)

Linux Mint 21.1 features artwork changes. The icons, the colors and the mouse cursor look different.

We recommend you reboot your computer for all changes to properly apply, then run the welcome screen to select your favorite color tones.

If you preferred the way Linux Mint looked prior to the upgrade launch the “Themes” settings. The 20.2 look is available under the name “Mint-Y-Legacy”.

5. Reboot the computer

Once the upgrade is finished, reboot your computer.

Commonly asked questions

  • If the upgrade is not available to you, check that you have the latest versions of mintupdate (5.9.6 or higher) and mint-upgrade-info (1.2.0 or higher) and restart the Update Manager by launching it again from the applications menu.
  • If the latest versions of mintupdate and mint-upgrade-info are not yet available in your mirrors, switch to the default repositories.
  • This happens rarely, but if you ever got locked and were unable to log back in, switch to console with CTRL+ALT+F1, log in, and type “killall cinnamon-screensaver” (or “killall mate-screensaver” in MATE). Use CTRL+ALT+F7 or CTRL+ALT+F8 to get back to your session.

  1. update was smooth from 21.0 to 21.1 Cinnamon

    – just a couple of minor things …
    * the update manger after reboot reported something along the lines of ‘unable to find source …’
    – this morning however, there is another update to the ‘update manager’, this seems to have fixed the issue.

    * the other thing is mouse cursors
    – system settings / themes / mouse pointer
… I use oxy-hot_orange … but when I look at the various options, only the new bibita cursor displays correctly, and a couple of the oxy pointers (but not all of them) – the rest display as a generic cursor shape.
    – however, when you select and use any of them, the cursor changes properly.

… could it be a cache problem ? or do the cursors need to be reinstalled ?

apart from that, loving the update …

  2. Another holiday season, another busy month for the Mint team. I’m not yet in position to update my system, but I’ll be checking out the new goodies soon. Happy holidays to everyone on the Mint team! I’m sure there are others like me that you’ve made happy through your work by keeping Linux Mint alive and strong all this time.

    1. Same problem. running “sudo mintupgrade” is showing me upgrading to 21 Vanessa and not 21.1 Vera.

https://www.debugpoint.com/upgrade-linux-mint-21-from-20-3/ according to this “You should see the following prompt, which tells you the ‘upgrade to Linux Mint 21’ is available. Click on Let’s Go. If you are running this after December 20th, then you should see a prompt ‘upgrade to Linux mint 21.1 Vera’.”

But I’m only seeing the upgrade to 20/Vanessa and it’s after December 20th.

    2. That shouldn’t be a problem, though. Once upgraded from 20.x to 21, getting to 21.1 is just a simple update manager process that takes a small handful of minutes to complete.

    3. @Bora Ön: Unfortunately, the process described in:

      https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4378

…is noit running properly, I always get stuck because of:

      Reading package lists…
W: GPG error: https://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com stable InRelease: The following signatures couldn’t be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY A8580BDC82D3DC6C
E: The repository ‘https://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com stable InRelease’ is not signed.

Although I never used this browser… What bug is this???

    4. You should remove all PPA sources, applications installed from PPA-s and also the keys. Because are major changes related to key handle. The old PPA setting are not compatible with newer Mint / Ubuntu / Debian.

  3. I appreciate Linux mint making it so easy. I migrated from mate in 2021 and now using Cinnamon. All experiences have been pleasant. Using Mint for 12 years now. Best desktop experience ever

  4. Upgrading was ok. I noticed that 2 folders in the home-directory showed up as “text”. After changing the folder-colour they showed up with the proper folder-icon. I removed the old “show desktop”-applet and added the new corner bar applet at the right of the panel.

  5. New alternative themes are not installed by default during official upgrade. Only Adwaita, HighContrast, Mint-X, Mint-Y and Mint-Y-Legacy themes are installed. That is not huge issue. Thank you for your hard work and happy holidays!

    1. These can also be installed by going to a terminal and typing the following:

      apt install breeze-icon-theme yaru-theme-icon papirus-icon-theme

  6. Second monitor will not work on LM21 or 21.1
System is HP 6530b laptop, core 2 duo P8400 Intel GE45 Express Chipset, 4GB RAM BENQ G2200WT monitor. According to “hardinfo” the graphics are Mobile Intel GM45 express chipset
    Fresh LM 21.0 cinnamon install.
If, AFTER booting LM21 I plug in a second monitor to the VGA port, the laptop screen goes black, the cursor flashes erratically and the second monitor keeps rapidly reconnecting and disconnecting but stays black.
If I plug the second monitor in BEFORE booting, I see the round LM logo on both screens, then it drops to the flashing cursor/second screen disconnecting as above.
When I then unplug the second screen, the laptop continues to boot with the LM startup sound and the desktop appears. It does not seem to finish booting until the second screen is unplugged.
When booting from a live USB, the second screen is not detected, but plugging it in or unplugging it makes no difference to the live USB session.
This machine has worked perfectly on every version of LM since LM17.3 onwards and is still fine on LM20.3
I upgraded to LM21.1 and the issue remains. I have spent some hours looking on the web for a solution to no avail. All help appreciated. LMDE5 works fine on a live USB if it helps
On a different note, I personally do not like the new mouse cursor or sounds, but at least they are easy to change and increasing the choice is a positive thing to encourage new users. . The much faster shutdown is great though and overall it seems much more responsive:)
Very Merry Christmas to you and the team, and I wish you all a Very Happy and Healthy New Year

    1. Hey Nigel! I use secondary monitor too! Its working for me! I use HDMI cable to connect and I too have a HP Laptop. Highly possible that yours could be device specific issue. Try out with other monitors if possible.

    2. My laptop froze twice, and some apps that I once used in the previous version will not launch even I tried using the terminal.

    3. Hi Vivek
This is an old laptop and only has VGA out for the second monitor. It works fine on LM20.3 and earlier so it seems to be something with LM21 between the LM logo appearing and boot. I will borrow another monitor and try that just in case though, thanks for the idea

    4. @Nigel, No worries. Additionally, there are 2 things. You can get a Vga to HDMI converter cable. Second thing, if you have an HDMI cable, you can try connecting laptop with television. This may sound weird, but it still serves the purpose. Happy holidays and have a good one.

    5. @Jahmie, this could be the fact you might have upgraded from the old version. Sometimes a fresh install would solve the issue.

    6. Hi Vivek

I went to a neighbour and tried a different screen and vga cable, still behaves the same. The issue is clearly something that has happened between LM 20.3 and LM21 stopping it working. Unless I can find a solution (no luck so far) I think I will either have to stay on 20.3 or move to LDME5. Thanks for your help though, Merry Christmas

    7. I experienced also something very similar problem on old computers as Nigel (always with VGA connection):
      1) HP nx8220 (32bit) – LMDE5
      a) HP LA2006x (1600×900) does not recognize this second monitor, only flashing
      b) Philips HNB 7170T (1280×1024) recognized, but the display setting does not responds to user actions
      2) ACER TravelMate 2490 (32bit) – LM 19.3 XFCE
both monitor is recognized and works somehow
      3) DELL Latitude E5400 (64bit) LM 21.1 Cinnamon
both monitor is only flashing and is not able to connect
      4) LENOVO M5400/20281 (64bit) – LM 21.1 Cinnamon
both monitor is recognized and works relative well

  7. Today LMDE5 has got the update and it looks the new Vera design. It looks great, beautiful. But I think that when selecting archives, the color could be a little more under the lower line of letters, a little more wide in the bottom. Another thing, after trying some color combinations, I realized the dark green color is not shown in the X to close the window.
Another thing is about Pinta. When I work with two layers and I apply transparence to one, both layers become transparent and it is very difficult, if not impossible, to work. And it crashes when I open a third layer and start doing something.
Apart from this, LMint looks beautiful and goes fluently and perfect. The best is when I want to work with a LMint backup copy of the partition and paste it into another PC and goes ok without problems. Great! Thanks for this awesome work, people.

    1. Pinta issue is now solved, maybe after an update some days ago. Now it works perfect. Thanks.

  8. Quick question – if my two PCs running Mint 21.0 are configured for fully automatic updating in the background (with snapshots configured to even save to a different physical disk), will the Mint 21.1 update install automatically all on its own in the coming hours/days/weeks, or do I still need to manually do the upgrade?

    1. keeping updated is one step below an upgrade to the OS. the upgrade will not happen automatically.

  10. Just upgraded my 2 boxes to LM 21.1 Vera and it took maybe an hour for both, very smooth and they appear to be happy with all the upgrades.
    >>> Box 1 is a Dell Optiplex 5060 System:It is an AMD setup that I cannot paste here. It has 16 gig of RAM, just a simple little thing.
    >>>>BOX 2 – I cannot copy and paste but it is a DELL 17″ Inspirion Laptop. Has Intel Core I5 3230M CPU @ 2.6 GHz / 8 gig RAM / has discreet graphics or you can use the Graphic card, but it has done fine since LM 18 when I changed over from Win 11. I have been a year and 1/2 since come to Linux and I have never been happier.

Both boxes have always thrown error messages at boot up, different on each machine, but it will boot and none of the fixes seem to help so as many people said they also have boot errors and just live with them as some have created more problems trying to fix things. I have just left it and not messed with it or trying to install the GRUB as that to has caused people problems. All boot up and run like champs so I am happy. Not bad for 2 old and older Window boxes.

  11. Thanks a lot LINUX MINT Team,
worked fine for me on my esprimo mobile M9410 Laptop!
Just a minor comment to maybe think about for refinement:
I use the login window of Cinnamon to enter user and PW but it shows a different Mouse Pointer here.
Also it would be nice to see the “Mountain Logo” replaced by the “LM Circle-Logo” instead …
Have a very nice, happy and peaceful Christmas.

    1. As you reported this behaviour, I had a look and it is the same for me. Even I did not use other themes on LM until now…

    2. I installed the missing new themes as described in the comments above, but at the end I stick on Mint-Y.

  12. The upgrade ran without error, and Mint successfully rebooted. So far so good. Much much better than the last upgrade.

( You guys are taking a big risk by sending out a release just before Christmas 🙂 Good luck this week and may Santa Claus not bring you many bug reports )

  13. Does anyone know how to switch off the screen backlight in Mint Cinnamon 21?
I can dimm it, but since 21 I cannot switch it off.

  14. Hey congrats on another great release, but i have a problem with new update manager after this upgrade. I don’t see any flatpak updates even tho flatpak update command in the terminal shows 10+. I think this is because i am using custom instillation location for my flatpaks as described here https://docs.flatpak.org/en/latest/tips-and-tricks.html#adding-a-custom-installation. I did this customization because i don’t use my root partition for flatpaks but other larger partition. I think this wouldn’t be too hard to fix and i would love to be able to use mint-update for flatpaks even with my use case. Also i think being able to pick partition where flatpaks are installed thru some gui would be great feature for linux mint, think of all configurations with small ssd and big hdd on which users can just dump flatpaks they rarely use. Tank you for reading and keep doing the great work!

  15. I updated from 21 Vanessa to 21.1 Vera using the software update manager…
The update was fast and without any errors on my HP 255 G8 Notebook. Everything is working just fine.
Thanks to the entire Mint team and a merry Christmas to all of you guys.

  16. Thank you for your hard work! I have upgraded from 21 to 21.1 smoothly.
There is a small problem: when changing volume, the new sound file (/usr/share/mint-artwork/sounds/volume.oga) is too quite.

  17. As usual I installed LMC 21.1 in the pen-drive and everything is smooth and fast. The change is welcome.
    Thank you.

  18. @Clem & the entire Linux Mint team has really done a great job! Specifically, this release has lot of changes made. Bravo team! Wonderful job! Thanks for this release!

  19. beautiful work, as usual, one minor thing: after the upgrade the mint 21 show desktop icon remained and there is no separator on the right side of the toolbar. How do I disable the old feature and enable the new one? thank you

  20. Hi, I have upgrade to Mint 21.1 today. Everything goes smoothly. Except, there is update notification for org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.nvidia-525-60-11, which is a flatpak package. But it cannot be updated, only downloading the package.
    How to solve this issue?
    Thanks for help.

  21. Nice. Great to get an update as always. It just works, of course!. Thank you and a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.,

  22. I just upgrade to linux 21.1, and I get the same issue with Bluetooth than with linux 21.
None of my bluetooth earphones are working with this new Bluetooth manager based on Blueman.
    No sound at all.
Everything was working very well in linux 20.3 with the Blueberry manager.

  23. To use my bluetooth headphones , I found a way out :
I disable Mint bluetooth and connect a bluetooth transmitter on the audio port of my laptop this works.

  24. Thank you for the Xmas present! One question, please: if I update from 21 to 21.1 via the update manager – will this add the usual “bloatware” (i.e. the regular Firefox and libreoffice?)? Or would it not, because I had already banned those from my 21 system?

  25. Upgrade went smoothly from Mint 21.0-Xfce to Mint 21.1-Xfce. took a little while to adjust but I am liking the small tweaks like mouse pointer and color changes. I just selected the ‘green’ since it’s more Mint like from the ‘Welcome Screen > First Steps’ section as changing things through ‘Appearance’ on “Style’ and ‘Icons’ does not seem to change the top bar of open window (like of Firefox/file manager etc) like it should as it still stuck on whatever you set in the Welcome Screen. but changing it through the Welcome Screen everything works as expected.

so this might be a bug and it reacts the same in Mint 21.0-Xfce to.

    1. This isn’t a bug. Just the way Xfce works. Many windows still use the Xfwm theme for styling. You have to set that separately in the Window Manager settings. The welcome screen just happens to do all that for you.

  26. When I verify the install image with the MD5SUMS file once it is written to a USB stick, I get the following:

    ./boot/grub/i386-pc/eltorito.img: FAILED

I noticed this also happened with Linux Mint 21. However, verifying the ISO image file passes.

    1. That seems to be an ongoing issue with the Audacity Flatpak, according to the reviews in the Software Manager. But that wouldn’t be a Linux Mint problem, but a Flatpak packaging problem. That’s out of Mint’s control. Personally I’m using a PPA to get the latest 3.2.2 version, and it runs just fine there.

    2. Thank you Mike F for your reply.

Uninstalled the Flathub version and installed the “System Package” version 2.4.2 and it works.

How can Audacity version 3.2.3 PPA be installed?

      Thank you

    3. I’m using Rob Savoury’s multimedia PPA. To install that, copy and paste these steps individually into a terminal, and follow any instructions that come up (usually just pressing Enter to confirm PPA installation):

      sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg4
      sudo add-apt-repository ppa:savoury1/multimedia
      sudo apt-get update
      sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

After that, you can install Audacity through apt, synaptic, or software manager, if it’s not already installed, and it should be at version 3.2.2. That’s the latest version I can find in a PPA so far. There is an official Audacity PPA as well, but they stopped updating it a while back, and say to use the Flatpak or Snap instead, which of course presents us with this problem. So the Savoury PPA is the best solution I can find, other than compiling it myself, which I really don’t want to do.

  27. On linux 21.1
I get an error message with Bluetooth:
Connection Failed : org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownObjectMethode “Connect” with signature””on interface” orgbluez.Device1″ does not exist. ??????

  28. Mint 21.1 Upgrade installed smoothly … Juste before Xmas, how sweet. I will revert the theme to the old one (I was used to the olive green desktop) but that’s a minor “issue”. Thank you very much to the Mint Team and Merry Xmas wherever you are ! Will make a small donation right away.

  29. I have been absolutely unable to reach any updates now for last three days. There is always an error message and the command to update the internet connection. But may internet connection is safe and sound!!!

I obviously will have to choose another distribution…

  30. I just updated flawlessly a few hours ago. Good job! I switched to Mint-Y-Dark-Aqua and really like the new look – although it took some hours to get used to it.

I already submitted a new version of my Firefox Theme with the more vibrant green. And I also created a new version for Mint-Y-Dark-Aqua.

Version 21.1.0 available as soon as Mozilla reviewed it:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/linux-mint-mint-y-dark/
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/linux-mint-mint-y-dark-aqua/

  31. to update to 21.1, but I always get stuck because of this brave-browser-apt-release, although I never used this browser.

    What’s this stuff???

    1. Hi Urs,
Maybe this is of help for your problem. Go to:
Update Manager > Edit > Software sources > and then check PPAs / Additional Repositories / Authentication Keys. If you find any entries corresponding to your error message, mark and remove them. Hope that works.
      Good luck, Bernhard

  32. I have to upgrade to 21 first. But why do I have to wait hours and spend GB for this Timeshift? Why can I not disregard this step?

    1. I always uninstall Timeshift as I never use it. For documents I always use external drive or cloud so that there is no need for timeshift. If anything happens I can always install LMC afresh.

    2. I generally uninstall Timeshift. I keep my /home folder on a separate partition, do regular backups, including the list of currently installed packages. So if anything goes wrong with the system partition (which is all that Timeshift would really help with anyway), I just do a very fast reinstall, restore the package backup, and I’m back in business. No need for Timeshift at all. This also helps with the major LM upgrades (such as from 20.3 to 21). A reinstall is so much faster and far less prone to failure than an in place upgrade at those points when you have a separate /home partition.

    3. Upgrading from 20.3 to 21 took me several hours as expected with the dedicated upgrading tool, but it did work. (My laptop is a cheap one not very fast.)
Timeshit can be reduced in size by limiting the number of records or erasing the older ones.
I find Timeshit very useful , it saved me several times from crashes.
Upgrading from 21 to 20.1 on the other hand was easy and very fast.

  33. When I press “Apply” in the “Requirements” tab I get: “The upgrade did not succeed. Make sure you are connected to the internet and try to upgrade again.”

I am certain I am connected to the internet.

    1. Yup.. experienced the same. Updates worked just fine. I dunno what to do to address the upgrade to v21.1. I am connected to the internet and responding to this post on the same LinuxMint VM that I am running.

    2. The install will not work while using remote sessions like VNC, or X2Go. You need to be directly attached to the system in order for the update to start properly.

    3. For me helped to run “mintupdate” from terminal instead of using menu in Update Manager.
Looks like system have serious problems to run anything that need root privileges when run from GUI interface. (Cinnamon here)

  34. I love the new colors in folders with the brightness. Also great cursor images and the colorful spinning thing while waiting for something to process. I usually don’t like changes to theme, but this is really good! Thanks.

  35. Just upgraded my four computers to Linux Mint Xfce 21.1. Worked like a charm and a donation is on its way.
Thank you for your hard work and enjoy the holiday season now 😉

  36. Great experience with the new version so far ! just a little bug, a shortcut to access the Display settings was added to the desktop’s context menu, but it is not translated and is displayed in english, while in french (coz I’m french) it should be “Affichage”.

  37. Great job as usual by the LM team.
Just upgraded after christmas and everything worked great.
I was reading a lot of complaints about the new yellow theme but for me personally it looks sharp and the contrast was much easier on my eyes. The only tiny quibble is that the new pointer icon is slightly larger than it should be.

  38. Upgraded smoothly from LM 21 to LM 21.1.
Excellent feature the ISO Verification Tool as well as the new accent colors.
    Thank you.

  39. I,m thinking about upgrading to Mint 21.1 from 21 on my 10 year old HP Pavilion g7 first before I do the same on my newer machines. However I’m confused about the issue about the boot error(out of memory) that is listed under “Known Issues— release notes”. Is this an issue that will be eventually solved if I wait and upgrade later or are all users going to have to go through these procedures just to upgrade?

    1. Hi Steve,
This issue is already mentioned for LM 21, so it seems to affect only certain machines. I myself did already 10+ upgrades from 20.3 to 21, fresh installations of 21 and 21.1 as well as upgrades from 21 to 21.1, and never faced the slightest problem. As you can always revert the system with Timeshift, I suggest you just give it a try, particularly since you are already on LM 21, for which the same boot error is already mentioned and apparently did not affect you.
      Good luck, Bernhard

    2. I went ahead and upgraded my ten year old laptop with 21.1. WOW how easy and fast it was!!!!!!!!! everything is working great!!!! 10 times faster than upgrading from 20.3 to 21. I totally recommend it. thank you Linux Mint Team!!!!

    3. Happy to hear that everything went fine.
It is normal, that it is faster, as it is only a minor upgrade from 21 to 21.1. The major upgrade from 20.3 to 21 is a different league.

  40. The upgrade worked without issue on my three machines.
I use “mintupdate-cli upgrade” to perform updates rather than the GUI Update Manager except for upgrades to a new version of Linux Mint. Since the upgrade to Linux Mint 21.1 Vera I have seen updates in the GUI Update Manager that are not addressed by “mintupdate-cli upgrade” such as “Mint-Y Gtk Theme” and a bunch of org.Freedesktop.Platform.GL.nvidia* Flatpacks.
Can I continue to use “mintupdate-cli upgrade” to perform updates rather than the GUI Update Manager except for new versions or do I have to use the GUI Update Manager more often?

    1. The GUI update manager in 21.1 now supports flatpak updates but didn’t support them in 21, that’s why it shows them, so the GUI update manager is supporting more updates now instead of mintupdate-cli supporting fewer; you can update the flatpaks by using the “flatpak update” command if you prefer CLI.

    2. Thanks for the reply Carlos MintFan. With more information I can upgrade my question. Will the mintupdate-cli program be updated to handle flatpak updates like the GUI update manager in 21.1?

  41. Congratulations for the work done, but I would like to suggest a small change to the new color of the folders. the colored bar that identifies it is hidden when you create a link of the folder or when you bookmark it. I suggest inserting the new accent colors on the left side, better if the line is a little wider.

  42. Many thanks, Mint Team! The upgrades to both LMDE 5 earlier on my Mint Mini Pro and the Mate upgrade on my Korean Samsung NC110-P5W netbook both went so smoothly and, as other friends have said, the look and working environment is just brilliant. Linux Mint is the best!

  43. Muito obrigado à equipe do Linux Mint por disponibilizar essas informações de atualização do sistema. Ajudou bastante. O novo sistema está muito bonito. Parabéns à equipe!

  44. Hello, Linux Mint Team,
Thanks a lot for this marvellous x-mas present. Upgrades as well as fresh installation went totally smooth.
Using LM since 2010, this version 21.1 seems to me being a milestone in the history of Linux Mint. Already last summer with the new GUI Mint upgrade tool and now with the ISO-verification tool, the last need for using the terminal got eliminated. This will surely encourage many more newcomers to turn toward LM, since the average user rather shies away from using a terminal.

As a suggestion for the future: How do you think about packing the Mint upgrade tool into the Update Manager in the same way you handle it for the minor upgrades? This would even facilitate its use one step further.

Thanks a lot and best wishes for the upcoming year, for your health as well as for the continuity of your project.

  45. Linux Mint Team,
Great update! However, I am having to do the CTRL+ALT+F1, log in, and type “killall cinnamon-screensaver cs-backup-locker” multiple times a day to get back into my session. Is there a bug report that I can follow for this?

  46. The update from Mint 21 via Update Manager went seamlessly on my new LG Gram 16 2-in-1; however, the boot time now takes forever: 2 minutes and 33 seconds!! Someone on the Mint Forum had a similar question, but no one has replied. On the other hand, the Update Manager on my laptop seems to work OK. Any idea what’s going on?

    1. Hi, Andrey,
You could try to have a look at the partition table of your hard drive in “Disks” and then may be one can see if the bootloader partition got doubled or messed up. Take a screenshot and link it up here. I will answer you again.

  47. About my no sound issue while connecting of my bluetooth headphone with the Bluetooth manager of linux 21.1 on my laptop. I found after many trials how to do.
If I do nothing special the headphone is connected on and off every about 5 seconds with no sound coming out.
But if I plug in and out a jack plug in the audio port then the sound is transmitted and the connection remains.
This is probably a hardware compatibility issue. Happy to have found how to solve it.

    1. Since then I tried the following commands:
      sudo apt install –reinstall blueman*
      sudo apt install –reinstall bluez*
      sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart
      sudo apt autoremove
It solved the connection issues on my Bluetooth headphone.
I still need the jack plug in and out but only with VLC and FreetuxTV

    2. To make Bluetooth working with Linux 21.1 was difficult for me, but finally I found the following simple way:
Your device being turned on in proximity, if it does not work automatically,
Deactivate Bluetooth, launch Blueman and reactivate Bluetooth.
Select your device in the list and right clic to disconnect and reconnect it.

  48. I do appreciate the Verify option of Linuxmint.iso files.
Right clic on the iso file
Select and clic on the option “Verify”
Wait until the SHA256 is calculated
And then clic on the “Verify” button. That all , so much easier than before !

    1. Hi Leo,
LM 21.1 can hardly be more demanding on the resources as compared to 21, since the changes are not a heavy stuff. All the best for the New Year.

  49. Another problem-free upgrade on 2 laptops. I’ve never been particularly fussed about how an OS looks as long as its not absolutely terrible. That’s the reason I started with Mint in the first place back at about vsn16. It has always just worked for me and I can always do all the stuff I want to do. So the visual changes in 21.1 are fine and I’m happy to leave them and look forward to Mint continuing to just work.

  50. One issue I’ve had since 21.0 is the application label remaining with the pinned panel icon for the QuiteRSS application (and ONLY that app) after closing the app. This remained the same in 21.1 This behavior did not exist with 20.x Restarting Cinnamon Alt+F2 r puts it back to just the icon with no label when it is not running.

  51. This is my first comment on this blog. I am using LMDE5. I was happy that the Cinnamon update is rolled into LDME. Getting used to the new folder theme though 🙂
As always very nicely put together, stable and reliable. I have 2 desktops both running LDME5. Thanks Clem and Team.

  52. Just trying to upgrade from 21.0 to Vera. However, this always fails

I run `mint-release-upgrade` in a terminal (within VNC).
I can click through the Vera upgrade wizard, confirm and apply it.
However , in the final step “Summary” shows “… the upgrade did not succeed. Make sure you are connected ….”
In the Terminal that started the upgrade binary, I can see:
“Error executing command as another user: Not authorized

    This incident has been reported.”

I’m remote … working via SSH or an extra VNC session (not attached to a real screen sessions).
I guess this causes the problem … can I skip this check? can I run a cli-upgrade scenario?

  53. When attempting to upgrade from 20.3 to 21 (before 21.1) mintupgrade keeps telling me that http://apt.insync.io/mint cannot be found and typing this into the browser I get
    {
    “code”: “not_found”,
“message”: “File with such name does not exist.”,
    “status”: 404
    }
, no version from waybackmachine available too

    does anyone have a hint?

    1. Following the instructions at https://www.insynchq.com/downloads/linux#apt I get the following when updating apt:

E: The repository ‘http://apt.insync.io/mint vera Release’ does not have a Release file.
N: Updating from such a repository can’t be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.
N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.

So it looks like their apt repository isn’t set up correctly. I would contact InSync and report the problem there.

  54. Thank you for a great new release. I use one of my systems on the TV with magnification 175% set in the display menu. A couple of suggestions: A collection of icons for webapps would nice (TV station, radio station, catch-up TV, podcast, newspaper website, on-line academic lectures …). Despite the magnification, the login screen text/password entry is a bit small.

  55. Another great release but please can we just decide what mint green is. The legacy mint y was too brown, the new one is too er green, but more than that it all looks so inconsistent. The blog and web page use different greens The ‘welcome to linux mint’ window colour green where it says ‘Lets Go’ is probably the best compromise but currently crashes with both legacy green mint y and new green mint y and makes both just looks odd and ugly. Can we have some more green options to make it consistent across the OS? Please.

  56. In recommending Linux MInt even to inexperienced people, the need arose to enable the automatic installation of updates. On rare occasions in Update Manager some package was not installed correctly which I solved with Timeshift returning the system to a snapshot created immediately before. So I was wondering if it was possible to add in the Update Manager, an option to take a Timeshift snapshot before applying updates when automatic installation is enabled.
    …Long live Linux Mint!!

  57. I’m getting errors about keys being stored in legacy trusted.gpg keyring after the update. Apparently there is now some new system for storing PPA keys but transferring the keys looks to be a fairly complex process. Why can’t the upgrade handle this automatically?

    1. This is unfortunately an Ubuntu problem. I noticed this after first installing the first release of LM 21. After reading up on it, it seems that the version of Debian Ubuntu 22.04 is based on changed the way apt handles gpg keys for better security. Unfortunately, when this new Debian apt system was brought over into Ubuntu 22.04, Ubuntu did not change their PPA key importing system to match the new key handling structure, so it puts gpg keys in the old default location, which triggers apt to throw a warning. It’s incredibly annoying, and totally Ubuntu’s responsibility to fix. They just haven’t fixed it yet, and who knows if they ever will (because they want everyone using Snaps instead of PPA’s now).

  58. Just upgraded my main desktop in the house. Fairly painless and remarkably smooth. Wouldn’t complete restart, but a hard shutdown and cold start completed the process. Thanks to everyone that made the best OS.

  59. I’m trying to upgrade Mint 21 to 21.1 on my ASUS Zenbook. No upgrade info in Edit/info in Update Manager, and Changed to default mirrors, Mintupdate seems to be 5.8.8 (not 5.9.6 and mint-upgrade-info 1.2.0) Any ideas how to overcome this?

    1. I’m running into the same issues. No amount of apt update/upgrade solves the issue. It’s as if the mintupdate and mint-upgrade-info updates aren’t available in the default repository.

  60. Bonjour,
I bought a LENOVO product: 82SB v: IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ARH7 6 months ago, installed mint mate 21, wifi and bluetooth were not working, I found the wifi driver (rtl8852be) and now iwifi works. I recently installed mint 21.1 and neither wfi nor bluetooth work, so I installed the wifi driver and it works however I could not find any solution for bluetooth.
FYI, i tested with ubuntu 22.04 and it’s the same, I then tested with ubuntu 22.10 and bluetooh works , so the question is :
Knowing that the solution to fix the bluetooth issue exists, when will it be available on mint ??
    Merci et bonne année
    Patrick

  61. I have just updated from Mint 21 to 21.1 on another laptop (Lenovo). It went like a charm. Also very fast. The 21.1 is amazing.
This updated Lenovo is being used by another family member.
My machine has still 19.3. This week I am going to do a fresh install of 21.1. Can’t wait.

    1. I have Mint 19.3 on several systems around here as well. There does not seem to be any upgrade path for those. And an install from scratch is going to be a major pain. Might as well just buy another disk for this migration alone!!!

  62. I’m running in to a bit of an odd issue in trying to upgrade from 21 xfce to 21.1 xfce. Specifically, mintupdate is at 5.8.4 and mint-upgrade-info is at 1.1.9 and are being listed as the latest version. I have my sources set to default (Main: http://packages.linuxmint.com and Base: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu), so not entirely sure why I’m not getting the upgrades for mintupdate and mint-upgrade-info.

    Any help is appreciated!

  63. Hello, I just updated but something happened and apparently I did not finish updating, and the update no longer appears, let’s see, is there a way to do it by finishing?

    1. Hi,

You can either go back with a timeshift snapshot restoration, or alternatively just make sure your repositories now point to 21.1 (vera) and take any available updates.

  64. I did the upgrade from 20.3 to 21 and the to 21.1. Worked flawlessly.
Gnome Commander crashes when accessing the settings. Not a big problem.
New theme: The new folder color is nice. But the ribbons are not necessary. They make the look not better but more disturbed and granular and make no real sense for they are small and the folders have another color. Now every folder looks like a special folder. Seems that the user should be reminded by every look at a folder which theme color he / she has choosen… For that reason I went back to legacy.
But that is a question of taste. Else: great great work! Faster than ever! Thank you so much!
    Greetings
    Oliver

  65. Upgraded from version 18. Took ages, and had to install all subsequent versions first, but I’m now there at 21.1 and I am very happy with the result. Great job guys! There is a vast difference between the two versions, and everything is running sweet on my ancient laptop. This is my first upgrade since converting over to Linux over 2 years ago. I learned a lot of useful stuff in this process, so it was a few hours out of my day well spent. While I was waiting for the computer to process the upgrades I did a bit of work on a Windows laptop I use solely for one program that works on it better than on a linux one. Man I’m glad I don’t rely on that OS anymore. Good riddance. XP and 7 were great for me, but 10 was atrocious for a laptop user like me. I shudder to think what 11 is like.

  66. I tried an upgrade from 20.3, but the installer asks me to remove a lot of software before proceeding. I then decided to make a fresh installation of Mint 21.1 with legacy bios on a different SSD. My laptop is an Asus N73 (Old but still working very well under Mint 20.3). It was impossible to launch the regular live install of 21.1. The installer never started the x session.

I have finally proceeded with the safe install menu entry. X started, but with the wrong graphics settings. I proceed to the installation in that mode and everything finally end correctly.

At the reboot, Mint was only giving me a flashing underscore bar indefinitely. I then restart mint in recovery mode. Bring up network, open a root terminal, and then start X manually. Mint X now up but with wrong graphics options. I went to driver update tools and install NVIDIA graphics proprietary driver.

At the next reboot, everything was OK. Not an easy installation at all for my old hardware. First time with difficulty in Mint world.

Also, the auto-discovery printers system ends with a functioning network Brother printer but impossible to use Duplex printing. I added a new printer, see my post in the forum (https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=389643&sid=c59944d72da96a32c8b95b2acd458ff0)

  67. To begin with, thanks to the Linux Mint Cinnamon team.

Upgraded two desktops and a laptop, but did a fresh install on my my “test bed” mid-tower. I’ve been testing every aspect of Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.1, since it’s release, to assess how it affects my computing interests.

There are numerous visual improvements, along with a myriad of minor glitches, some of which are mentioned above. I am not concerned about minor issues which soon get noticed by the developers and users.

But there are questions I will post in the forum to seek comments from a wider audience, rather than mention them here.

  68. I am a relatively recent convert to linux mint having played with various other distros before settling with mint as a keeper. i lived and worked in the filthy halls of microsoft’s product offerings for years and if it weren’t for a lack of an easy way to use microsoft mappoint and the garmin software and update the software on my access port I would be completely and totally windowless. I recently did an upgrade of 21.1 Vera on my old laptops via a clean install and it was fairly painless. I love several of the new features, primarily it sees my wireless printer with no fiddling at all. yeah! New look is just beautiful guys you did such a great job. In spite of my best efforts to learn how to use wine effectively so i can run those troublesome win-only programs on linux, i am still stymied. Is there anything that can be done to make the wine patch easier and more effective to implement and use?

  69. whilst upgrading from 20.3 to 21 the system hangs up
for now 24h the prompt stands at: Pregenerating ConTeXt MarkIV format. This may take some time…
    any ideas how do proceed?

  72. hi I updated to the new 21.1 vera but now I have no internet connection I tried everything but I cannot connect please advise urgently

  73. Please, make my Mozilla’s Firefox browser faster than it’s really because of my continual HomePage through DuckDuckGoGo & GoogleSearch which of these are based to a plenty of websites & webpages…

  74. My system does a backup daily. Now I can’t upgrade unless I backup again, despite the presence of existing backups. That’s more than just slightly stupid.

  75. System reports says that an upgrade to mint 21 is available but update managers edit menu has only 3 items.

  76. First of all thank you very much for you Clem and all your team.

A donation from a small pensioner (72 years old) is on the way, everyone should do it if you consider what you often throw money out of the window for without meaning.

I switched to Linux Mint sfc a good 2 years ago and haven’t regretted it for a minute. Upgrade Mint sfce UMA>UNA>VANESSA>VERA worked without the slightest error message, very well prepared upgrade procedure. In addition, the WLAN driver RTL8812EU was automatically taken along and reloaded with update. Furthermore, I use a USB3.0 Express Card which does not provide any power supply for an external HDD under Windows, crazy! With Linux no problem to use them.

You and your team are doing an absolutely perfect job, and to all users who have never failed, cast the first stone.

  77. Sorry ladies and gentlemen, an old man makes a couple of mistakes.
Of course it’s called “Linux Mint xfce” and the WLAN driver “RTL8812AU”!
    Thank you for your understanding.

  78. MINT 21.1:
Despite sha256sum is correct, on USB stick written with dd:
md5sum is giving one error even after repeated writes:
    # md5sum -c MD5SUMS
    ./.disk/base_installable: OK ……..
    ./boot/grub/i386-pc/eltorito.img: GESCHEITERT
    ./boot/grub/i386-pc/eval.mod: OK ….
    ./preseed/linuxmint.seed: OK
md5sum: WARNUNG: 6 Zeilen sind nicht korrekt formatiert
md5sum: WARNUNG: 1 berechnete Prüfsumme passte NICHT

Anyway – would it be safe to install? Should I try another USB-stick? What else?

  79. Hello Friends, I’m trying to put Linux Mint 21.1 on a Lenovo Think Pad for a friend. I’m Using a USB that I’ve used several other times successfully on my machines. When booting up and running Mint in compatibility mode the resolution is horrible. (640 x 480) (4:3). The option to change the resolution in the settings is grayed out. There doesn’t appear to be any way to change it. The Refresh Rate is also grayed out with no options. the only choice available is Rotation . Does anyone know if this is to be expected after installation on a think pad or is it just a glitch in the compatibility mode?

  80. I ve just installed a LM 21.1 Cinnamon and all works well but the terminal doesn’t start
It doesn’t come from the hardware because I ve allready run a LM 21.1 on it, I still have it on another hard disk
No update were made, no connection to the internet neither

  81. Hello,
Since last version, I can’t no more use the mouse wheel on the title bar to roll the window of Firefox (only Firefox, its ok for all others windows)
Thank you for help or explanation.
    Peter.
