    1. I got a critical error saying that updating packages are broken and I have to update ATP or something like that. Any suggestion? Thanks.

  1. Is there a way to configure new updates to work as it was before? – I don’t need any notifications, small dot is enough.

  2. Good news and many thanks to the team for this release.
Do you consider/intend to port Cinnamon to Wayland starting with LM 21.x?

  3. In the list of applications starting at login, there’s “VMware User Agent”. can I uncheck it if I don’t use VMware ?

  4. Can the Update Manager’s behavior be made to act like the earlier Mint editions? as I’d rather know right away if there are updates available in as indicated by that dot in the Trey Icon.

    1. That is easy. Go to Update Manager | edit | preferences | Notifications | turn off “Only show notifications for security and kernel updates”

  5. Missing Numbering & Insert Date/Time in Bulky
Is it planned to add this Features
Install Thunar and add “thunar –bulk-rename” in Nemo Settings solved the Problem for me

Many Thanks for the new Version – new Search Function in Nemo is great

    1. Hi Helmut,

Hover the text fields to see the tooltips. They explain how to insert/replace with numbering. We’ll introduce more variables in the future for dates and other useful tags.

  6. An excellent release – full of improvements and refinements.

Congratulations and thanks to all the Mint team.

  7. Waaah, I don’t see the upgrade yet… Oh well, then I have something to look forward to tomorrow.

  8. As usual, update took about a minute and a half. No surprises or annoyances. Hell, I was only two sips into my first cup of coffee when I did it. Easy as ever. Now to see if those new update nags are going to be irksome.

  9. So far, it all looks good! One thing I noticed, though: Every time I reboot, Update Manager reports that it can’t update repositories. But when I open it and refresh, all repositories update without problem. Not a huge thing, but still an issue. Maybe it’s starting and updating too soon and doesn’t have a network connection yet?

  10. Also, are there any plans to modify the default calendar applet in future versions? It’s been a point of frustration for me since Cinnamon stopped being a Gnome extension. It’s currently pretty much functionless, other than being a static calendar. I’d love to see it once again include appointments and events, like it used to back in Gnome 2, and like it does currently in Gnome, XFCE, and KDE. Ideally, linking it with Online Accounts would be great, so that I can connect it to my Google and school calendar. I know there are other calendar programs I can use, but I really want something that lives on the panel and drops down “menu-style” on-demand over whatever program I’m working in so I can check appointments/events on a specific date, or add a new appointment/event on a specific date, and then quickly and neatly tucks away back into the panel. Having to run a whole separate program is such a pain in comparison to that. It’s been asked for for many years in various feature requests, but the applet remains pretty much the same as it always has been.

    1. This has LONG been a big one to solve for me too… Luckily, since version 20.1, I’ve found the WebApp Manager the perfect workaround, which is already available to us.
We can have instant access to Google Calendar through a stand-alone, really fully configurable Firefox page and window, either permanently open in the background, or instantly accessible via a Web Applications applet from the task bar, without any need to log into Google again at every instant. No other Calendar applet could do a better job. Hope it may work for you too!

    2. @DozerD – Thank you for your suggestion. Not quite what I’m looking for, though. I’m needing a quick dropdown applet that doesn’t involve bringing another whole window up over what I’m working on. Just a small, quick panel calendar like the one LM comes with, except with a selectable date, a list of events on the selected date, and the ability to quickly add an event, and then quickly tucks away back into the panel. A whole window calendar is too much, and would cover what I’m looking at (such as a webpage containing dates I need to put on my calendar) unless I snap each to one side or another of the screen, which would be added work. Just a quick dropdown is exactly what I want.

    3. @Mike F – Sorry for this delayed reply to yours. Unfortunately, I don’t know of any solution that approximates an applet like you describe. That would be ideal, I will admit. For now, we’ll still have to make do.

Did you see the August 6 comment below, by Denis C, about the Flatpak package called org.gnome.Calendar? It’s still not the desired applet, though, and some 800 MB to install… I myself will stick to the workaround I mentioned before.

  11. Hmm, (main) cinnamon menu seems different (application column looks smaller), some items can’t fit (Advanced Network Co…, GNU Image Manipulation Pr…, Synaptic Package Man…)

  12. I’m REALLY disappinted that proper EXFAT support has not yet been backported in the form of newer gparted and exfatprogs. Every USB flash drive comes formatted with EXFAT and we still have to go through gyrations to repartition our drives. No, F2FS is not an option for me.
    HELP!! TIA.

  13. Thank you so much, I love LM Cinnamon, keep up your work! Maybe in the not-too-distant future we can use Wayland on the desktop!

    PT-BR
Muito Obrigado, amo o LM Cinnamon, continuem seu trabalho! Quem sabe num futuro não tão distante possamos usar o Wayland no desktop!

  14. the lmde4 upgrades follow the linuxmint 20.x upgrades i think it’s very good! i hope you will keep the same rythm for the lmde5?
really lmde 4 is a very good operating system

  15. Great to hear about this but I don’t think I can upgrade yet 🙁

On my system (currently 20.1) I found that the 5.4 kernel couldn’t cope with the hardware on the new laptop I’d bought myself for Christmas, but I discovered the mint team had supplied 5.8, so I tried that and everything worked! (You guys are great!) I recently noticed that 5.11 was available and moved up to that with no problems, and a few more wrinkles ironed out.

I see that 20.2 ships with the 5.4 kernel and there is some talk in the forum of 5.11 being available soon. I guess I’ll have to wait for a while before applying the update (which is already offered in my Update Manager).

Also, I’m running a later version of LibreOffice than is offered with 20.2. Will that be downgraded when I update to 20.2?

Fortunately for me, I’m still wowed by 20.1!

  16. Just found a bug. There is an issue with video playback. When you initially play a file, it opens up fine. If you chose another file while the player is open, it will lose focus every single time. You have to manually click on the player again. Doesn’t matter which video program I’m using.

  17. Questions:

1.) With the recent announcement that Audacity has been purchased by a Russian company who has plans to add telemetry (to record *and share* usage, computer specs, OS, and users’ IP addresses), will Audacity continue to be a part of Linux Mint, or will it be removed for the sake of maintaining Mint users’ privacy?

2.) I am growing to like Linux more and more because of Microsoft Windows’ increasingly invasive non-stop spyware-like telemetry, and I plan to make the switch to a Linux-only computer soon. Is Linux Mint is committed to protect it’s users and provide a completely telemetry-free computing environment?

  18. Lots of cool stuff. Great job Mint-team!
Especially happy about ‘bulky’ – already good, but once it reaches feature parity with the xfce solution it will be great to have.
Content search in ‘nemo’ is also very appreciated!

A few nitpicks though: 1a)the upgrade deinstalled gnotes. Why?! 1b)The replacement app Sticky failed to import the old notes and refused to start after that until i deleted the config file. 1c) Sticky is not even remotely production ready, yet. User-experience of the app aswell as the tray icon is clunky and requires way more clicks than it should. There is also no search functionality at all. It is not that I can not see a use case for this app(short term project reminder notes/checklists) but it does in no way have the same target group as gnotes that was better at being a long term memory refresher.
2a) Had a quick look at xreader (I normally use Okular) and have a few questions: Why is there no icon on the toolbar to switch to fullscreen mode? 2b) Why would I EVER want to see a massive toolbar in fullscreen mode and why would I EVER not want to see a toolbar in window mode? It is a bit baffling to me that the standard behavior seems to be either toolbar or no toolbar in both modes.

    1. + on your Sticky Note comments. Worst idea ever for many years.

It is not even close to be able to import files from gnotes (at least it doesn’t delete them;-)).
gnotes uses plain text files filled with xml

No close/hide icon for notes, but instead a tray icon in the upper right corner to kill my notes?

Sticky Notes has been deinstalled and replaced by gnotes.

    2. The issue with importing from gnotes is now fixed in the master branch and should hopefully show up in the update manager within the next few days. We’ve also fixed a few other bugs that popped up which may improve the user experience.

Also, please note that we never intended sticky to be a 1 for 1 replacement of gnote. If you prefer the workflow of gnote, we certainly encourage you to use that instead. It is still available in the repositories, and isn’t going away. The reason we switched to sticky is because we felt that it would better suit the average user, and it doesn’t really make sense to have 2 different note taking apps installed by default.

As for the quality of the project, you also have to remember that this is the first release, and there are bound to be bugs at first, and features we haven’t had the chance to implement (or even think of in some cases). Even though I’ve been working on this for over a year now, there are many bugs I haven’t run into, and I can’t fix a bug if I don’t know it exists. The only way to really catch those bugs is to release the project into the wild. Also note that these bugs weren’t even caught during beta, so giving it more time most likely would not have made this software any more ready for release. Saying that the software is terrible because it doesn’t fit your workflow, or that it’s not ready for production because you found a couple of bugs doesn’t help.

  19. I activated flatpak updates from the manager, but it still stays in “Startup Applications”. Is this a bug? Should I delete it manually?

    1. You should be able to delete it. If you’ve ever toggled that on or off, it’ll remain there even if the item is removed from the system (it makes a modified copy in your home folder – ~/.config/autostart). It’s harmless either way.

  20. Thank you so very, very much for Cinnamon 20.2 Edge version with the 5.11 kernel.

I’m also looking forward to the other features (e.g. Bulk File Renamer) but have just been waiting to install on new hardware

  21. also, what’s the sha256 hash of the Edge ISO? I didn’t see it in the 20.2 sha256sum.txt
    Thanks

    1. Edge was released a bit later than the usual editions, so it’s probably still syncing – not all the mirrors have it yet.

  22. Looks like another solid release !! Installed it and have been enjoying all the new features. Thank you Clem and Team for all the hard work.

  23. Thank you linux mint team for all your hard work and dedication to producing a reliable and productive distro. I just wanted to know if the new default behavior for nemo preview is to start anchored to the bottom right of the screen and if there is a way to have it always start centered on screen. With the linux mint 19.x series it would always start centered. Thanks

  24. Hello, I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.2 yesterday and found two problems related to the interface.

The first is a problem in the main menu if you click on the main menu then the audio and video and administration items shake and jump in Russian

The second problem is when you click on the music applet, when you open it, it jumps from top to bottom as if the panel is located at the top

I would like you to fix these problems especially the problem in the main menu with displaying menu items in Russian

    1. Hello, is it possible in the next versions of cinnamon to remake the notification applet so that when notifications arrive, they do not look after the system reboot so that they can be deleted manually as it is done on Gnome or Android

  25. Hello, This new release is seems awesome and so far i didn’t see any kind of bugs, you’re really doing an amazing job ! I think the rework of the sticky app was a good idea and even think than also rework the calendar app and keypass manager could be nice features in futures versions of LM.

  26. Started with 19 last year and have progressed through each of the upgrades. This is the best so far, improved speed in Cinnamon. Very responsive overall

  27. Hi folks!
there’s a little “bug“ in the german translation in the driver-manager.
When i change to english, everything is alright:
“Your computer does not need any additional drivers.“
    In german it tells me:
“Ihr Rechner benötigt einige zusätzliche Treiber.“
    which means:
“Your Computer does need several additional drivers.“
    The correct Translation would be:
“Ihr Rechner benötigt keine zusätzliche Treiber.“

    Thank you!
Greetz from southern Bavaria/Germany and the linuxmintusers.de forum!

  28. Great release, thank you!

The bulk chown suggestion didn’t make it into Nemo, it seems. Would that come with a regular Nemo update, or is that something for Mint 20.3?

  29. I appreciate the new search function but I really love the way Warpinator and its Android App work together. Thank you!!!

  30. I just stumbled across
“The power source of the computer is now checked prior to the launch of automated updates to ensure they do not run when the computer is on battery.”
I know some relatives who load their notebook without using it and use it without power supply – no automated updates forever?

  31. Hi, I noticed an unpleasant problem in the main menu of cinnamon, the menu items are not fully displayed and are twitching, this is not very nice, I ask you to fix it

  32. Hi, I wanted to add a calendar applet with google calendar synchronization as it is done in gnome so that you can view events in the calendar applet

  33. Hi, just installed Linux mint cinnamon and immediately noticed a problem in the main menu, the menu items are twitching and pulling my system in Russian and the menu items are not all creeping into the menu and jumping and jumping, I ask you to fix it

  34. Linux Mint is awesome! Thanks a lot!
Is it normal that some scroll-bars are twice larger than previously on some applications (eg Nemo, System Settings, LibreOffice…)

  35. I have an issue,
Intel UHD 750 Graphics detected as llvmpipe instead of GPU model.
    The screen resolution not detected
I fix it by installing OEM kernel linux-oem-20.04b

  36. A(z) „cdrom://Linux Mint 20 _Ulyana_ – Release amd64 20200624 focal Release” tárolónak nincs Release fájlja.

    mit lehet ezzel kezdeni?

  37. Why was Gnote removed with this update ?
When the ‘notes’ application asks if i want to import my gnote notes, it pegs 100% CPU and i have to kill the task eventually. On manually trying to import the notes it fails as it is looking for a json file that does not exist in the “local/share/gnote” folder, only an xml & .note files exist. So il have to find a way to export to json i guess :/

Also notes is not really a substitute from what i can see, perhaps it can be if i could actually get my notes in imported i might be convinced. Im going to have to manually install the flatpak of gnote (and mess around getting it to see my notes and also mess around getting the flatpak to backup to a remote area as flatpaks are very folder restricted by default and mess around with getting it to export to json.)

seriously why did you auto remove gnote ? i manually installed it. it’s not something you installed for me from the distro release. Are you going to uninstall anything else for me..

    thanks

  38. Hi!
I did the upgrade, but my Mint 20.2 did not bring the Sticky Notes and Bulky. Does anyone have the same issue? Any suggestions to fix it?
    Thanks

  39. Update from 20.1 to 20.2.

Bug: Start menu “All Application” group shows nothing until mouse is first hovered on some other application group and then back on “All Application”.

    1. Hi, encountered the same problem. Restarted Cinnamon manually and the missing apps reappeared.

  40. Hi,
I’ve never experienced something similar before.

Downloaded, verified and burned on a USB Stick the new LM 20.2 Cinnamon ISO.
Booted in live mode on my laptop (already in dual boot W10 + LM 20.2), tested a few minutes flawless doing nothing particular and shut it down.

After restart (pf course without USB Stick) Grub was suddenly disappeared and W10 booted automatically!

Through W10 I could access the BIOS and change back the UEFI settings.

    How could it be possible?!

    1. I think the makers of Windows 10, knowing full well they are losing dominancy in the operating system market and knowing a lot of people are dual booting, have designed Windows 10 to be a royal pain in the butt for you dual booters who have Windows 10 and another Operating system on the same hard drive. I have a Desktop Computer and on an M2 drive, I have Linux Mint and Ubuntu Studio, on an SSD, I have windows 10. now if I am on either of the OS on the M2 and open the terminal and do sudo update-grub, it cannot find Windows 10 on the SSD. So what I do, if I am starting or re-starting my computer and I want to go to Windows 10, I repeatedly hit my F11 key, which brings up a screen where I can choose which disk I want to start from

      i

  41. Hello,
    I use Linux mint 20.1 cinnamon-edge.
If I upgrade to 20.2 within the OS, will the Edge image be applied automatically?

  42. Why the update manager does not keep or allow selecting a mirror? Like, in the mirror I use, I got 500mb/s, while when updating from US official mirros, I got 10mb/s at most…

  43. First of all, I want to express my gratitude for beautifully crafted Linux Mint Cinnamon!
Kudos to all Linux Mint team!
    I have one issue/bug/question?
I did a fresh install of Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.2. All is good except wifi on my Ralink RT3290 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R. Signal was very poor and constant dropping (30% signal where windows give 100% on same machine). After reading online (on other machine) I disabled wifi power management.
Now, wifi is not dropping connection but speed remain slow and signal strength is only 50% (85% at 10 centimeters from router – windows 100% with one concrete wall in between). In LM 19.3 wifi was working great. I did tried 5.11 kernel but no improvement. I don’t know if this is kernel, os or driver bug?
    What to do next?

  44. It would be great if we can disable wifi power management from within network manager and not by editing config files…

    1. It isn’t deleted, we have an automated system against spam and abuse. Sometimes it can’t decide by itself so the comment is kept in moderation until manually approved.

  45. Hi All,

I currently have Linus Minx 19.3 (I never got any of the update notifications), and I am trying to Update to 20.2. I am no programmer, and my computer guy put Linux on this computer at my request, so I have never done an update. I have some basic computer knowledge, but every time I pick a download, and download it, it does not run and the Video Player is the default program on one version (University of Washington Mathematics), and the Torrent version is want to download it with some third party website that warns of sharing my info with others—NOPE. I don’t know how to do this. Any help? I know this is a super basic question, and I am sorry for my ignorance. DK

  46. I just installed Mint 20.2 Cinnamon 64-bit final to a VirtalBox VM, then installed and configured all the critical applications and mods I use. It all worked perfectly, as expected. Great job Mint Team!!! Huge Thanks!

  47. Clem, thank you for answering!
I tried MX Linux 19.4.1 x64 ahs (5.10 kernel) and wifi works about the same. So maybe the ralink driver works better with older kernels like one in LM 19.3. However, in MX Linux wifi power management is off by default so that at least wifi connection is not constantly dropping.

  48. Concerning Cinnamon auto restart it is said: “It will keep a log of such events so that you can see if this happens often and help the development team troubleshoot the issue.”

Where can I find this log?

Also good job and thank you for 20.2.

  49. I did the update on lmde 4, I notice that warpinator does not recognize warpinator on android (with the previous version, it worked very well), is there anything to do that I did not enter?

    1. Hi Chris,

I don’t know the details yet but I’m aware of an issue with warpinator in LMDE4, we’ll get this fixed.

    2. thank you for your answer
I just received a new warpinator update on lmde 4 and this time it works again: my computer and the android recognize each other!
I love lmde and I really hope that one day you won’t abandon it for just ubuntu because it’s really a very fast and stable system! I love this system!

  50. Hello,
Having some random freezes till Cinnamon upgrade to 5.0.5. in LMDE4. Even after clean install, troubles go on. As my 2 other computers upgraded and are running fine, I guess something in my hardware is not happy with Cinnamon 5 (or the opposite). I’ve no hard feelings against the Team who obviously can’t test every possible configuration.
So, my question will be quite simple :
Is there an ‘official’ command line (by ‘official’ I mean one I can trust in scripts) to permanently block cinnamon upgrades after a clean LMDE4 re-install ? (if I remember correctly, I’ll be stuck to Cinnamon 4.4.6 but it worked lovely)
    Thanks for any answer

  51. After getting update, my Win10 laptop was not able to boot anymore. I tried a lot of recovery options, but the better one was installing Linux Mint.
Now, no problem and my laptop is working stable and faster.
Good job, very easy to install, update and work with Cinnamon.
And last but not least, much safer.

    1. Yes. The same thing happend to me. Was competely blown away and cost lost’s of money.
Windows 10, i5 ? I need to get it repaired ? Best computer l ever got but crashed after update.
So sad but that’s life. Linux Mint for me for ever now. It just sits there and completely useless.
I don’t understand how something can be so awsome and completely destroyed by the same
company that made it. Does not make any sence to me. Yes, completely dum founded by this.

  52. Thanks Clem and team.
I have had no problems. This is normal with mint for quite a few updates not.
Hats off and I can’t quite express my deep appreciation.

  53. Hi Clem, I have just upgraded to 20.2 Cinnamon really easy so thanks for that. Also thanks for Warpinator it was really super PC to PC and PC to Moto E4 Android. I’m not an Android fan but Warpinator would show up as active even though I closed it in the usual way that I end an Android app. No big deal. Thanks and keep Mint running. Ian

  54. Thanks for another wonderful product!
I had a problem with the ISO boot image thumb drive, but I simply searched the blog for a solution.
First after doing backups, I installed Mint 20.2 on our old beat up desktop PC. Next I installed it on our ThinkPad laptop. Finally, we have them next to each other on one of the desks in our office with two Samsung monitors and manually sync them with the same software. They both had Linux Mint 17 and we loved it so much we didn’t want to move up. As soon as we had them both running, we tried the new Warpinator. Wow! What a pleasure it is to simply transfer files between the two PCs.
Thanks again and keep up the great work! 😉

  55. Goodnight.
At the software manager there is a flatpak named Gnome Calendar that implement Gnome Calendar on Linux Mint as is in Ubuntu.
    It’s very good.

  56. Mint has become a large part of our family. For as long as I and my family can remember we have been Windows based. Once the Microsoft OS started changing and the computers got more and more expensive I looked for a alternative OS to use. Behold Mint! We have made the switch and its almost been seamless. Now all our computers and laptops are running this stunning OS. A big Thanks to the development team and others who work tirelessly on keeping this OS updated and working.

  57. Delayed shutdown in Cinnamon Edge 20.2
I installed LM 20.2 Cinnamon Edge on a brand new Lenovo Ideapad 5. (The regular 20.2 Cinnamon gave me a message to invoke driver manager which found no drivers.)
There seems to be documented problem with the 5.11 kernel when the machine shuts down or restarts. The LM logo stays on the screen for 15 seconds till the machine powers off. So be aware of this issue if you are considering 20.2 Cinnamon Edge.

  58. I had LM 19.3 Cinnamon x64. It worked fine. After this summer updates the suspend mode stopped working. The system goes into suspend, after restoring power it hangs even not turning on the display. Only turning off or reset help. I decided to install this new release. But the same issue is remaining. What can I do?..

  59. When I run Update Manager, migrating from 20.1it continually tells me there was a problem, although it changed my apt config to “uma”. Now I am stuck in ulyssa/uma limbo because it appears I have certain uma packages install but running lsb_release -a still says ulyssa. Even reverting via Timeshift produces the same result. Is there anyone who knows how to manually upgrade to uma correctly? Or gather more debug on what the problem is? Apt is fine and all updates are installed.

  60. Just a heads-up: Steam is freezing and is unresponsive. The only way to shut it down is by killing the process outright. If anything else is running at the same time as Steam, the whole OS becomes unresponsive, and I have to perform a hard reboot.

  62. Linux Mint is a great system and one of the best Linux systems out there. I work as a programmer in Egypt (I am currently experimenting with Kali Linux) I am Ehab Sabry…thank you..

  63. Hi there,

At this moment if I move the windows buttons on the left they are in the following order (left to right): Close; Maximize; Minimize.

Is there a way to have them as they were in the past, once they were switch to the left: Close; Minimize; Maximize ?

    Thanks

  64. Feature request. Tabs on panel can be closed individually or “close others”. Could there be an additional option to close tabs to right. This will allow more than one tab to stay open

  65. Just installed LM 20.2 Uma Cinnamon on an oldish Asus laptop (amd64). Tried installing Mate yesterday and had a funny ‘frozen’ screen. No issues with Cinnamon. Fast process, clean interface, seems a faster and more responsive OS than Win10. Only reason I still have Windows is for the MSOffice suite and a CAT tool (Trados) for my translation work. If I can effectively run these two on LM I would of course be very happy 🙂

  66. non ho ancora installato LM .Non sono riuscito a scaricarlo e di conseguenza ad installarlo.Non sono esperto

  67. I am installing Linux Mint 20.2 “Uma” Cinnamon the first time by myself and i hope it’s all o.k.

  68. Complete newbie, to begin with. Trying to install the 20.2 version today from USB on my new Lenovo Yoga 7 which so far still runs on Win11. However, I did not launch the installation process after discovering that the kernel (still 5.4? not sure how to find out) apparently could not find my touchpad. I know this was a driver issue in earlier versions as well, so I tried the usual procedure of installing the synaptics, and then the evdev driver. Both did not show up after logout/reboot and nothing worked. Is there another package I could install to make my touchpad work? I don’t want to start installation before I’m entirely sure my hardware will be recognized… (Besides, external mouse works, and the settings allow the touchpad to be used, also in addition to mouse.) Thanks for your help, Charley
