  1. Congratulations to the whole Linux Mint Team for this great version of Linux Mint KDE. This its excellent, great KDE !!!! Once again…. Congratulations Linux Mint Team !!!!

  2. Clem,When will Linux Mint 16 “Petra” KDE stable edition release? Waiting eagerly for it.

Edit by Clem: It really depends on feedback. It usually takes between one and two weeks, but the more pertinent bugs you find (i.e. bugs we want to, need to, are able to, fix), the longer it takes. The base is pretty stable already though, we fixed a lot of things during the RC for MATE and Cinnamon, and when it comes to the DE layer, KDE is upstream to us, so the RC phase should be quick.

  3. On Friday Dec. 6 I downloaded the Dec. 5 iso of LM16 KDE. SHA256 checksum was OK so I burned the DVD. Installation was fine. On Saturday Dec. 7 I was not able to access Software Manager and Update Manager to install wireless driver and wireless networking connection. Wired connection was OK.

I would appreciate your help. Am very reluctant to burn another 1.3 GB iso today, unless I really don’t have any other choice. Thank you.

  4. Downloading now! One thing I noticed in the documentation, Totem is still in the KDE edition release notes.

    Edit by Clem: thanks.

  5. It always baffles me how a wireless card works in one version, Mint 15, an then not detected in Mint 16. Luckily I have a handy dandy USB dongle wifi that works no matter what.

    Card not detected: Card-1: Broadcom BCM43227 802.11b/g/n driver: bcma-pci-bridge IF: N/A state: N/A mac: N/A

    Bill

Edit by Fred : Did you try to install the broadcom driver from the live-cd ? The live CD comes with a local repository containing the broadcom module. Open synaptic, search for bcmwl-kernel-source, mark it for installation and apply the changes. It should properly detect your wireless card then.

  6. @ Bill

    re: #6

Temporarily connect with ethernet…. and then

Dare I risk asking you this, but….have you tired the 3.11.0-13 kernel (from synaptic) to see if this could help you? Somewhere in the Mint 16 blogs I thought I read that this kernel might be considered as a # 3 level update (for SOME USERS–not ALL users) on your system. Couldn’t hurt to try, I suppose.

It is does not help resolve the problem, then it can easily be deleted, again by using synaptic.

Just a thought. Hope it helps you.

  7. I don’t get why but my wireless refuses to work at all with Mint 16 KDE, will disconnect randomly with Mint 16 Cinnamon, and works perfectly fine with Mint 16 Mate.

  8. I downloaded the iso and installed LM 16 RC KDE 32-bit this afternoon. MD5 checksum verified. Installation worked fine. After reboot, I can’t seem to find Update Manager icon. Got 136 updates via sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade. Both wired and wireless connections seem to exist, but I cannot find KDE-version of Network Manager to configure them. Networks Settings window doesn’t show either wired or wireless connections. No NM icons on the taskbar either. By the way, the kernel is 3.11.0-12-generic. Any ideas?

  9. @ Hoa Le (#17):

I found the answer for Network Management icon to be installed:

    1. Right mouse click on the taskbar > Panel Options > Add Widgets
    2. Scroll arrow to the right and select “Network Management” widget > Enter
    3. Click on the NM widget or icon at the right edge of the task bar, then click on “Connected”
    4. click on “Edit Connections”, then add configuration settings details.

I trust this is helpful to someone.

  10. So, can this be installed on a Mac in place of the existing OS X, using EFI support to boot directly without having to use rEFIt or any other aid.

Edit by Fred: I guess so. Even if I never tried that, I’ll be curious to have your feedback about it 🙂

  11. Finally a KDE with desktop like gnome 2 !!

It was everything I was expecting !!

    Congratulations Clem and LM team!

  12. Installed it in a virtual machine yesterday as soon as I found it on Distrowatch. Found one small thing, which has also been found in the Mate and/or Cinnamon versions:
After the installation is done the computer hangs. Normally you would get a window saying: Remove installation media and press Enter, but that doesn’t show up. Instead now I got some small LinuxMint icons on top in red on a further black screen.
When I pressed Enter, the reboot started.

That’s it. The installation works great, as always. Thank you Clem, thank you team.

Edit by Fred : Yes, we found that too. Depends on graphics hardware though : some users don’t have this issue. While this is only cosmetic, we decided not to delay the RC release for that.

  13. Can’t log out properly. It just goes to a black screen and all I can do is ctrl alt bksp and restart from the prompt. Other than that everything else is working great so far.

  14. Installed from a USB onto an ASUS U31SD, i5, 8GB ram.

First attempt installed the iso in LM KDE 15 with EXT2 filesystem.

sda3 as swap. Then as EXT4 and formatted sda5 as /. sda6 as /home. Tried adding an existing partition EXT4 sda7 as /home/data without formatting, after a couple of seconds the installer crashed.

Second attempt formatted the iso as FAT32 in LM Cinn 16 and installed the iso. Using the new formatting tool and USB install option. Same results.

Third attempt left off sda7. Installed fine. Added the required partition to /etc/fstab, rebooted and it works fine.

    sda3 = 6GB
    sda5 = 25GB
    sda6 = 15GB
    sda7 = 400GB

16 is working well except for that installer problem. Doing exactly the same thing worked on LM Cinn 16.

    Thanks.

Edit by Clem: Hi Craig, please provide the logs for installer and the crash details (usually in /var/log/syslog and /var/log/installer/debug).

  15. Suggestion to Clem:

Aspect wise, take a look at openSuSE 13.1
Mint is my distro, but the KDE edition could use a lot more love.

  16. Please NOTE and be aware, as with the Cinnamon/MATE versions, on UEFI systems this distribution installs to an EFI boot directory named ubuntu, not linuxmint. As long as you are not trying to install both Mint and Ubuntu on the same system this is not a problem. If you are trying to install them both on the same system, you will be disappointed.

Otherwise, this RC installs and runs on UEFI with no problem, including the dreaded Secure Boot configuration. Pretty nice.

    jw

  17. Wow. This is great! Thanks to the team for all your hard work.

I have a dilemma now, though – I just got a new laptop and had expected to install Mint 16 Cinnamon on it. But now I’m tempted to put this RC on instead.

  18. After porting MintMenu to XFCE, how about porting it also (or create one) to KDE, of course by using Qt. Because one of the characteristic of LinuxMint is MintMenu.

  19. @RyanBram

    I would propose something similar:
Instead of proting it, i would like to see the default menu forked and for starters change the way we navigate on the main categories from horizontal do vertical and go from there.

It would be a much KDE Like solution that i think it would please lots of people.

  20. hope this will work on acer aspire 4755g i tried most of the previous version and every time i encounter kernel panic

  21. Hi There I’m looking forward to this release. I am hoping that the issue of psychedelic colours and the inability to install because of this is solved in the final release of LM 16 KDE.
    Bien joue!
    aYo

  22. Testing now, and found a bug.

The Network Management Icon in the System Tray doesn’t change when the network is disconnected.

    Please fix.

  23. This release is really, really nice. After 24 hours of use, no complaints here. Congratulations and thank you for your hard work.

  24. I have installed this RC yesterday on my main desktop. I have two partitions for OS and another one for /home shared by both distros. I have already retired Petra KDE on the other partition and I am using this as my main OS.
    Everything works perfectly out-of-box.
I use 64 bit version, installed from USB media.

I wish there was green theme that would completely replace that typical KDE blue. I know I can download use themes from control panel and I have downloaded a few, but in many programs I still have blue progress bars and other elements. I really like the green colors of the main edition (plus wobbly windows and other things that KDE provides)

Thank you Clem and development team.
As usually, Petra KDE is as close to perfectly configured system as they get.

  25. @nomadewolf
Yeah,I’m agree with you, as long as there is MintMenu in KDE. But unfortunately the developers seem don’t care if we are discussing about this idea, as I never heard any comment from them when someone come and propose this request.

Edit by Clem: That’s not a common request. Also mintMenu wouldn’t just be ported to KDE, it would need a rewrite. That’s a big project and we don’t know if there’s much demand for it.

Edit by Clem: Hi Ayo, I’m sorry about this. Unfortunately I can’t do anything about it. The observation that you see “psychedelic colors” isn’t enough for me to troubleshoot any particular area. I don’t have enough details to even guess what the cause of the issue could be here.

  27. Great job. Just curious, why is the open SSH remote administration server on and listening by default right after installation?

Edit by Clem: It shouldn’t. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We’ll remove openssh in the stable release.

  28. Great Job! Is the plain text redirect of all Amazon search terms to the Mint server going to be fixed in Mint17?

Congratulation to the Mint team on another release

Edit by Clem: Thanks. We’ll look into it.

  29. >41 @RyanBram

    I agree with you.
But on the other hand, I know the porting MintMenu to KDE is a very tough work.

I tried to port by myself and hacked into the source codes of MintMenu, Kickoff and Lancelot. But their structures are completely different, and their codes are much longer and more complicated than I thought. I struggled about a week, and I realized that it’s no longer porting but developing from almost zero. So I gave up. I don’t have such time and motivation.

I wish someone to do it…

Edit by Clem: It’s something we can do, but it does require a lot of time and efforts. If it was sponsored by BlueSystems for instance, or if a lot of people wanted it, then we’d do it. We’re looking at stats though, and we don’t see a lot of users on the KDE edition, and within the feedback not everybody is asking for this particular feature. Blue Systems also put resources in the development of a new menu called homerun kicker (https://launchpad.net/~blue-shell/+archive/homerun‎), please have a look at it and tell us what you think of it.

  30. I’m very confortable with Linux Mint KDE Edition having the default KDE menu instead of MintMenu and I think it should stay this way.

Yes, I know, MintMenu is like a flag of Mint.

But keeping the default KDE menu is the best option in my opinion because it gives a more pure KDE experience, and KDE users/fans usually like it.

MintMenu could be available just as an option, not as default. Just my opinion and impressions of KDE use. I’ve been using KDE for a long time.

Congratulations to Linux Mint team for another release.

  31. To Stano…. there is a theme called Ghost that make it green. it also ha a window decoration theme, desktop theme and color scheme. i have it and love it

  32. The installer crashed on a samsung laptop, installing on an extended partition with swap enabled

Edit by Clem: When does it crash? Why? Does it happen all the time?

  33. Bug report:

Klipper doesn’t appear in the System Tray nor in the System Tray Settings.

    Klipper is pre-installed by default.

Edit by Clem: It’s in the menu, you just need to launch it or to decide to autostart it.

  34. Linux Mint 16 KDE is very nice looking but can you remove all the KDE apps that are never use to reduce the size of the iso image and make the distro cleaner i have to remove them all which is a pain for example

Amarok is not need as vlc is installed
Kaffeine is not need as vlc is installed

there there is all the useless apps like Akregator,Kmail,KDE IM,Konversions,KPPP,Kontact,Korgganizer,Kwallet

i Would just install Hexchat for irc

  35. to Keith:
Amarok has different purpose than VLC and should stay because it is a very good piece of software.

Kaffeine is useless. That is true. It is no longer maintained and it seems it won’t be anymore.

I regularly use the apps you’ve mentioned so it’s only your point of view.

  36. Good Point Petr (comment 53) i forgot to point out that i tend to strip my linux install back to a minimal setup then install programs as i need then to to keep it clean and fast everyone does things differently

  37. Hello Clem,

    Re: my comment #17 oC-KDE 32-BIT

Systray shows blue UM icon with a letter “i”. Previously nothing happens when I click on the icon and entering my password. Today I try invoking UM via the terminal:

    >mintupdate

After entering password, the terminal shows:

    >mintUpdate.py: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.

    Could this be Bug #1015832?

I would appreciate if you & your developers fix this problem for us.

Thanks a lot for your help.

  38. Hello,
After downloading and installing Linux Mint 16 (Petra) KDE RC, I have a problem. When the login screen shows up, I cannot find any way to enter my password. The login screen is a brushed blue background with my user name printed on it, but nothing opens when I click on it.

Also, I installed it twice to make certain I hadn’t done something wrong during the installation and after the installation was finished I stayed in the live-CD to examine the installation. I used dolphin to examine my login directory and found it to be completely empty (I didn’t check for hidden files).

I’ll continue to use my Linux Mint 14 installation for now since I can’t do anything with release 16.

Edit by Clem: Clicking it should normally let you input a password. Alternatively you could press the UP or DOWN arrow to select the user with the keyboard. If you catch me on the IRC I’d love to troubleshoot why the click isn’t working with you (we can activate logs for MDM and make sure everything is working as it should). Another workaround is simply to select another greeter or another theme in /etc/mdm/mdm.conf. From the tty, you can log in the console, kill MDM, and startx to get a graphical environment. From there you can launch mdmsetup to change the theme for instance.

  39. Hello,

This morning as my computer was booting, I didn’t respond quickly enough to select Linux Mint 14 and the system booted into Linux Mint 16. To my surprise, there ws a login dialogue showing on the brushed blue background. I logged in and after a few seconds I was looking at the desktop. I haven’t yet done any set-up except to enable the firewall, but it looks good so far. I’m writing this comment from Linux Mint 16.

I have no idea what happened on my initial boot where no login dialog was displayed.

Edit by Clem: By default MDM will pre-select the user who was the last to log in. Something probably happened the first time around. If it happens again, please enable the logs in mdmsetup and send them to us when it does.

  40. wow this OS is soo beautiful.

…and customizable and suited for beginners
as well as eg modifyable for elderly persons

I have to get a paypal-account or the like sometime soon for donations as a sign of my appreciation for efforts like this.

Sorry, I didn’t know about this – total newbie – and so -i’m quite euphoric for having found this. Mint-fresh & KDE ′′

    Thanks a lot!

    PS: Byebye Windows

Edit by Clem: KDE is brilliant and getting very polished. I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Thanks for the kind words 🙂

  41. This problem is back with Linux Mint 16 KDE 64 bit RC. If ~/.kde/env directory exists I cannot log in. Can this be fixed before the stable release?
Here is the reference for setting environment variables in kde:

    http://userbase.kde.org/Session_Environment_Variables

Here is the problem I am having:
The file ~/.kde/env/path.sh is no longer honored by the rewritten /usr/bin/startkde program. If I rename the env directory to env_hold, I can log in. If I rename it back to env, I get caught in the loop that asks me about qdbus again, and I cannot login. I looks as though the person who rewrote the startkde program was unable to completely test it.

  42. Looks like mint backup tool in Mint 16 KDE 64bit is broken:

    [127]mint@mint:~ > mintBackup
You do not have the required dependencies
    Traceback (most recent call last):
    File “/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintBackup/mintBackup.py”, line 88, in
    class MessageDialog(apt.progress.gtk2.GOpProgress):
AttributeError: ‘module’ object has no attribute ‘gtk2’

Sorry Clem if wrong place to post; couldn’t figure out right place in forums.. But, thought was important enough to let you know.

Get this after rebooting from a fresh install on Live DVD and in Live DVD as well; trying to restore my Olivea stuff..

    Latest RC downloaded tonight.

And after I had so diligent backed up to try the RC too… 😉

Oh well back to 15 till release I guess (Awesome in it’s own right – TY Mint Dev Team).

  43. Some problems making mintbackup run…

You do not have the required dependencies
    Traceback (most recent call last):
    File “/usr/lib/linuxmint/mintBackup/mintBackup.py”, line 88, in
    class MessageDialog(apt.progress.gtk2.GOpProgress):
AttributeError: ‘module’ object has no attribute ‘gtk2’

    Dependencies (libpython2.7, python-gtk2 and python-glade2) installed.

Edit by Clem: Thanks, we’ll look into that.

  44. Bug report (minor):

Translation leak, install with non english language (I used spanish), once installed, open Firefox, go to File menu, Open file, the dialog box is not translated, not the places section, not even the buttons.

Edit by Clem: Hi. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. It’s a bug in the installer, we’ll get that fixed in Mint 17. In the meantime you can manually install language-pack-gnome-es to fix the issue.

  45. I’ve installed this onto an Asus Revo RL80.
(A dual-core Intel Celeron 1007U processor with Intel HD graphics).

The mdmwebkit process is continually polling something, and nteracting with the X server in some way. Between them the use 30% of a CPU -continuously.

    Tasks: 126 total, 3 running, 123 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie

The mdmwebkit process does seem to be continually polling an anonymous inode (this thing, in /proc/pid/fd)

    lrwx—— 1 mdm mdm 64 Dec 15 17:42 4 -> anon_inode:[eventfd]

which is always reporting Timeout (using strace).

  46. ok. installed linux mint kde 16 x64. fast install( nice 🙂 ). i like that num lock stars auto(good improve), i like how everything goes a bit faster than LM 15. The only thing that does not run is LCD WEATHER where nothing is shown, only blank image….

  47. Installed Linux Mint 16 KDE RC. I tried a lot of KDE distros recently, Linux Mint was easily the best. Brilliant job. Keep it up guys!

  48. A bit more info on the mdmwebkit/Xorg processes permanently running with an inactive Login screen showing. (I’m logged in over the network).

The login screen background seems to be scrolling slowly down – full-width horizontal banding moving from top to bottom (although that *could* just be an artefact).

Edit by Clem: That’s by design, the background is animated. You can launch mdmsetup and choose a different greeter or a different theme to reduce CPU usage if you want. For most people, mdmwebkit is only up at boot time before they log in. It closes once the session is launched.

  49. I love all the new improvements. Seems very stable but I still can’t seem to get the recommended Nvidia-319 driver to load with the driver manager without the desktop going haywire after restart. Large type everywhere, tiny icons etc. I’m using a GeForce GTX 560 Ti

  50. Hi,
I’m addressing to you, because on forum I don’t have an answer to a problem which bothering me regarding Linux Mint 16 (Petra), the 64 bits KDE distribution.
    (“http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/testing/linuxmint-16-kde-dvd-64bit-rc.iso” distribution)…

And maybe(!?) it could be a kind of bug…

Because I’m in a “search phase” to discover a suitable Linux Distro to replace the Win8 on my home machines (2 laptops and 2 desktops), inevitably I start playing with Linux Mint 15 (LM15 was the last version at that time).

Last months, I install & “play” with Linux Mint 15, 64 bits KDE distribution on a VMware Workstation 9 and it works perfectly.
I have no problems at all… Install and play with a lot of applications… No complains and score high to be the searched candidate for my home devices!

Meanwhile, Mint 16 (Petra) was coming…
So, I decide to install also the 64 bits KDE distribution on the same VMware Workstation 9 (into a fresh new Virtual Machine…), using the same installed VMware version.

But I have a surprise: right after the ISO boot sequence, I want to change the screen resolution (it was 800×600), like I did also on Mint 15 case, but in “System Settings”->”Display and Monitor Settings” *I DO NOT* have a tab for “Size & Orientation”!
Only just “Display Orientation” and “Screen Locker” tabs! No “Size & Orientation” at all…

    Now, the question is:
.- this behavior is a bug or not?

At the beginning, I tend to put it in that way: it’s a VMware problem…
But a thought cross my mind: WHY with LM15,KDE64, on the same VirtualMachine, using the same installed VMware version this problem does not exist?!
I meant, in LM16, KDE64, the “Size & Orientation” tab is missing from a place where it shouldn’t !
And this aspect could not necessarily be generated by the VMware…
An entire tab is missing from the “System Settings”->”Display and Monitor Settings”!
(I have some screenshots with this if somebody is interested…)

    Do you encounter this?!
    Thank you for your considerations!
    Dragos

Edit by Fred : The screen resolution tool has changed with KDE 4.11 : it’s located in System Settings/Display and Monitor/Display Configuration and then click on the little white box with 4 green arrows inside.

  51. Additional to 24.

Sorry cant figure out how to add logs correctly. Hope this isn’t too long. I have only added the end of the first file. Let me know if you want this refined.

Edit by Clem: Thanks. It looks like that’s a known bug upstream and it’s been there for a while.. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1038522. There’s a workaround fortunately, have a look at http://askubuntu.com/questions/287338/kubuntu-13-04-installer-crashes-on-manual-partition-setup

  52. Additional to 73:

    Thank you Fred!
Indeed I succeeded now to change the screen resolution.
As I said: the Linux Mint, KDE64 is the best candidate to change the OS on my home devices!

The entire team makes a great and outstanding work! Keep going guys!
    With RESPECT,
    Dragos

  53. I just hit a bug with the calendar: I installed petra kde in vbox, set to italian… and the now if I try to customize the clock (remove the events) it is impossible, because when I uncheck the option to show them they still show. It worked in the live, with english.

  54. Hey Clem, thanks for the rapid response!

Fortunately I need to re install this RC, so I can get more bug reports

Bug minor: The install process occurs normal, after that it puts the option to continue or restart, if I restart, it go to console and waits forever (it don’t says “eject the disk…” and don’t respond to keys, but i can change the terminal) tested in vmware workstation 10.0.1 build-1379776

Bug minor: Trying to use the software update, when i try to apply the updates it says that “I can’t download several packets” all packet name starts with libqt. I think that this is temporal, as is repository related

Bug minor: Or mayor for non Linux fan, when opening the file explorer (Dolphin) selecting Net, between the options there is one called “Samba shared resources” I know what it is, but for any less experienced is not clear, changing it to “Windows shared resources” I think that can be more clear for all.

Bug medium: In the samba share, go to a windows machine, go to a shared resource full of movies, open one with vlc, but vlc refuses to open “the input cannot be open smb://machine/Shared%20Resource/….” i also tried with Kaffeine, but says something similar “Cannot find input plugin for MRL “smb://machine…” but this message in kaffeine is english, not in the localized language.

    Greetings.

  55. Hi Clem,Ilike KDE especialy good one like yours!it,s perfect congrat! But Im not able to use it from 13.10 /Mint16 version. The problem is Skype After I fix it the whole sound of the system becomes scrathy and unusable.Ihave a casual integrated Realtek soundcard and have the same problem on Mint 16 and Kubuntu 13.10.Can you do anything so I can use my favorite Linuxmint and KDE again?

  56. Another problem I saw on all Mint distributions. Ihave no suggestions on Google search. And it comes from the begining till now of the Mint project. Please do something about that.

  57. I’ve been testing out ALL of the different environments for Petra & have been REALLY impressed with all of them! I will be moving my high-end laptop from Cinnamon to KDE, & moving my low-end laptop from MATE to Xfce when the stable version of each is released. My only suggestion is in creating a unified theme for Mint across all desktops. I think the Cinnamon version is the ideal Mint theme (green on the dark panel), & all of the Mint versions should follow that theme, just to create a unified Mint look & feel no matter what is powering that environment in the backend.

  58. I am using petra for a week on my AMD machine. I only have one problem, the application randomly freezes and I need to forcely shutdown the machine and turn it on again before it can be used. I’m afraid that someday my disk will fail.

  59. I had the same problem as Craig W above and used the workaround, but it still crashes. It happens when I try to tell the installer to mount an NTFS partition as /mnt/WIN7.
The crash happens a bit later than the first time (the mount point for the partition appeared before the crash, while before it hadn’t).

I tailed the files you asked Craig for, hopefully the info is enough.

I’m going to try to install without specifying mount points for NTFS partitions, then edit fstab after the installation.

  60. Just to let you know: I tried again, *and* specified mount points, and this time there was no crash. The only thing I did differently was that I added mount points for NTFS partitions before I did for the ext4 partitions.

    Thanks.

  61. I’ve noticed a problem in this RC with a website in Firefox that does not occur in my installation of LinuxMint 14 with KDE.
I like to work jigsaw puzzles while I eat breakfast and I always go to http://thejigsawpuzzles.com to find a puzzle. This morning I tried it on this RC, but when I tried to scale the puzzle using the minus-button that shows in the upper-left corner of the newly chosen puzzle, I had the puzzle screen break up into horizontal bars that showed interleaved strips of the puzzle mixed with strips of google, which I used to find the puzzle website, which I opened in a new tab. I did not continue with the puzzle, but restarted my computer and logged into my installation of LinuxMint 14, and tried the same puzzle, which behaved as expected.

  62. Great!

Ever thought about making a Mint KDE theme? this way, we could get more consistent look for GTK and KDE apps and I agree with comment 78, the cinnamon theme would be awesome on KDE.

  63. Me again, this time after installation with two language issues and a minor but annoying one.

I installed the system using British English, but I also use a lot of Greek. However, it seems that something is wrong with the codepage, as files that have Greek names don’t appear correctly. See this screenshot:
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15422855/Photos/mint16-lang-bug0.jpg
    (Many letters appear as dashes).

The second problem is what happens if I install Greek as a language, using System Settings.
This screenshot shows the window normally, before the other language is installed:
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15422855/Photos/mint16-lang-bug1.jpg
    After installation it’s like this:
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/15422855/Photos/mint16-lang-bug2.jpg
Note the label next to “Date:”. It seems that although English is the first language, some parts of the GUI decide to show themselves in Greek (and appear incorrectly because of the other problem).
The same thing happens in other parts of KDE, such as the application menu (for example the “Log out” option), the device notifier and many other things.

The minor but annoying problem is that the Application Launcher (the main KDE menu) turns the “Switch tabs on hover” option on every time I log in. I untick the box and it stays off as long as I’m logged in but next time it’s on again.

    Thanks.

  64. Biggest complaint so far is multiple menu items and the old ones no longer work… the gui shows the change, but doesn’t really do anything:
e.g: Power icon. New icon, new functions, but old icon remains (on my panel too) but no longer has functionality… (same as the ‘brightness and lock’) changing in one gui does not show up in gui for other one…

So I have to assume that for all duplicate icons, the old ones no longer work, right?

    duplicate icons in the menu:
    color
    sound
    power
    displays
(I have a ‘brightness and lock’ and a ‘brightness & lock’) maybe one of them works like the old one?
    network
    startup applications

    there may be others.

  65. Re 67 + 71

    >> That’s by design, the background is animated. You can launch mdmsetup and choose a different greeter or a different theme to reduce CPU usage if you want.

Thanks. Switching to Cloud has removed the CPU usage.

  66. After reading the reply to #73 above, I found the display settings. I suppose this new configuration tool is a product of KDE rather than Mint. In any case, it seems much less intuitive than previous versions of KDE.

I also do not like the new default font, but this is easily changed.

    Otherwise, things look okay.

I am currently using LM13 64-bit KDE on my linux workstations, but I am testing each release of Mint. I plan to upgrade when the next LTS version is released.

Thank you for producing Mint with KDE!

  67. KDE crashes every time I shut down the system. This does not happen with my LM 13 KDE installation.

In addition, I prefer the default font color in the Konsole terminal in my Mint 13 KDE setup over that in Mint 16 KDE rc. I suppose this could be changed in the .bashrc file.

  68. I’m back…Helena was my last install of linux mint. I left because I was fed up with the constant gnome panel crashes. At the time I did not like mint’s kde offering. I wandered and settled on a distro with a rather decent kde implementation. I found the maintenance overhead a bit too frustrating to my liking.
I have just completed the installation of Linux Mint Petra KDE RC. It is now fully configured. Akonadi, Nepomuk, Kmail and all the Akonadi dependant apps are working flawlessly. Besides I was able to configure /home with XFS. I like this version, very smooth and polished. Things are so good I’m tempted to classify it a release version.

    Excellent work.

  69. Re #85, and another quirk.
This morning while I was attempting to login, I did some exploration of the login dialogue by clicking on the gearwheel, which open another dialogue with some options. I didn’t want to change anything, but I didn’t see a way to close the option dialogue, so I pressed the Escape key. That promptly closed the login dialogue, left the option dialogue open, and I now had no way to log in. I tried various things to try reopening the login dialogue, but no success. I finally resorted to CTRL-ALT-F1 where I could do CTRL-ALT-DEL.

When I got logged in, I changed my login preference to “Clouds” and selected KDE Plasma Workspace for my default session.

I promptly restarted my computer to see my results and all went well for the login.

Referring to comment #85, I went back to the jigsaw puzzle website, selected a puzzle, and now everything seems to be working normally. I have no idea if anything I did with the login preferences affected the performance of Firefox with that website, but things seem OK now.

  70. WARNING! I just downloaded the KDE64bit from the ftp stable branch and the installer is broken. I always dual boot, so I install the grub bootloader to a partition instead of MBR.
The installer messed with MBR (even selecting a partition) and I ended up with a non bootable system 🙁
    Please fix this!
