News and summary:
- Many thanks to all the people who help fund Linux Mint. We received more than $7,000 this month in donations alone. Almost 300 people came to help this November. It’s a drop in the ocean compared to the size of the user base but it’s also a huge help for the size of our project. It’s inspiring to imagine 300 people together in a room, to look at the variety of places they come from and to realize they all gathered just to give us a hand. I feel really grateful for that and this month feels very special also, because we’re able to give back with a brand new release.
- Linux Mint 16 “Petra” is out. We’re delighted with the reception it received so far. The feedback is very rich and very interesting and it helps us a lot in defining the roadmap for the next release.
- The KDE edition was approved for an RC release today and should become publicly available on Sunday. I was very impressed with it personally. I think KDE fans will really enjoy it.
- The Xfce edition is almost ready. It’s held by a single issue which we’re fixing at the moment. If everything goes right we should see an RC release next week.
- MATE 1.6 and Cinnamon 2.0 are being backported to Linux Mint 13. Announcements will be made after packages are built and fully tested.
- Work is starting on LMDE UP8. We’re expecting it to hit “incoming” before Christmas.
A few releases ago (Mint 14), i stop using Mint and installUbuntu. I was very disappointing with Cinnamonn and Mint itself. Now, I install Petra and it’s, for me, the greatest Distro i ever used. Absolutely fantastic. Congratulations!
Respect to the guy who gave $1000!
Nice work on CInnamon 2.0 Clem. Thank to the team for this nice release.
I’m looking forward to see this UP8. I am anxious to deal with it !
Update on Xfce: The bug in question (which affected user-switching between mdm and xscreensaver) just got fixed.
Thanks for your work. Patiently waiting for LMDE UP8, fingers crossed…
Since the work on LMDE is starting, can you please look at the following related issues?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1207689

And a little package request:

And finally, these two threads:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=198&t=146187
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=198&t=147101
They are about a few annoying bugs in gvfs that made us downgrade it to 1.12. Since version 1.18 is still in Experimental repo, UP8 will get 1.16, and that’s what I wouldn’t want because of the mentioned bugs.
Clem – Is it possible to share number of Mint Box’es sold each month / quarter? Not to know financial details (profit margins) but this may inspire and help people in purchase decision. just my two cents worth.
I just got mdm update. Not sure if it is related to above issue though.
I see the release version of Mint 16 is out. I am using the RC version on my laptop. How do I upgrade to the release version?

Mint 16 is a Windows killer, best distro yet. Thank you. I’ll donate soon by buying the Linux Mint metal Sticker- The finishing touch needed for my laptop 🙂 -Somebody fix Wobbly windows, it’s too wobbly.
Nice to hear that things are going so well. I’m really impressed with Linux Mint 16 so far, and so is everyone else I’ve come into contact with, even random people who post about how great Mint is in the forums on Crunchyroll (the anime streaming site) when commenting about Linux support for video streaming sites.
Mint with Cinnamon’s turning out to be my favorite OS ever, and this is from someone who thought he’d be “Windows XP for life” back in the day. I’m really looking forward to the next LTS release, and will probably either keep that for a while or switch to LMDE.
Unless I specifically need to run a Windows program (usually a game that’s not on Steam for Linux) I’m using Mint 16 as my daily driver OS lately, which is surprising to me given how attached I’ve been to Windows 7 in the past.
Kudos to Clem and the Linux Mint gang. I’m glad I switched over from Ubuntu 12.04, and am not regretting it or looking back.
In this context of new releases I’d like to ask, if it would be too much of a technical hurdle, to offer a user selectable non-PAE x86 kernel in the boot menu of the Live-DVDs for all those, that still hold on to devices, powered by Intel’s first generation Pentium-M Banias and select Dothan CPUs.
That Ubuntu left people with those devices out in the cold is one thing, but can’t LinuxMint here set an example in the other direction and continue offering 32-bit non-PAE kernels as an option anyway?
It gives me great pleasure to be able to use an alternative to windows 7.
While Mint 15 has been giving me some issues with Netflix and Google Earth, I will not be returning to windows and the greedy people who publish it.
Dennis
@Wando: nice to hear cause I felt the same. I was delighted using Isadora on my previous laptop. I bought a brand new powerfull laptop, installed Maya XFCE and I am not so happy with it. ok, then, I will certainly give a try to Mint 16 (can we expect a Mint 16 xfce flavour?). A good Mint16 may announce a good Mint 17 LTS which is THE release I am looking forward
@ 6 – Apologies, I did not think through that Compulab may not be interested in sharing the numbers.
A big thank you to the team.
Best wishes
@Sebastien (#24) – Linux Mint 16/XFCE was just approved for an RC release two days ago. It should be available for download in a day or two once they get all the mirrors synced. You can install the RC if you don’t mind running a pre-final version (the RCs are usually pretty stable) and just performing the normal updates via Mint Update Manager will eventually upgrade you to the final release.
Correction to my last comment. “@Sebastien” was comment 14 not 24. Fat fingered the keyboard again.
Thanks for the good news Kirk. I’m glad there is a XFCE milestone leading to LTS. No doubt I will give a try to Mint16 XFCE in order to contribute as much as I can to the way toward the very best Mint17/LTS.
@sebastien – It’s released. 🙂
@OS2User: As I understand it – Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu so, when Ubuntu binned the option for a non-PAE kernel, Linux Mint lost that option too. Re-introducing it would involve extra work and break the ‘based on Ubuntu’ philosophy. But all is not lost. LMDE is based on Debian – and Debian still ships with a non-PAE kernel option. I run LMDE on my old ThinkPad (a T40 with an R51 motherboard) for this reason.
@Kirk – Great ! downloading… 😉
Please check this thread, possible bug? Information doesn’t match in Mint 15 Cinnamon partition manager during install.

@Spearmint2: judging by my own comment, I can say this time the comments aren’t monitored by the team (unfortunately).
