Please report bugs here in the forums: http://linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=0&t=12853

This time I would like to thank not the team but the community itself. You’ve been great at reporting bugs and describing issues and annoyances with RC1 (BETA 032). The quality of your feedback was outstanding and it really helped us making Mint 5 better.

Have fun with this better Elyssa and don’t hesitate to send us comments and feedback. The Stable release should come in a week or two and after that we should be looking at the first x64 or KDE ISOs.

  1. Hi All, I am having the same problem with beta 048 as I had with beta 032. I can run the live CD perfectly but after I install it to my hard drive the boot sequence stops with the green bar chasing backwards and forwards and all hard drive activity stops. I have found that by adding “acpi=0ff” to the boot options cures the problem.
I am running a home built PC that uses an Award BIOS dated 2003.an Athlon cpu, 1 gig of RAM and an Nvidia 6200 graphics card. I use this PC to test run all sorts of Linux operating systems and have never had any problem before. (Daryna runs perfectly)
I am delighted with Daryna but can anyone tell me why I am having this issue with ACPI in Elyssa?
    Regards, Stuart

  2. Thanks a million.

I’m relatively new to Linux, and I’m so happy with Mint (after trying a few distros) that I’m convincing a few friends running away from Vista to give Mint a try. They’re also looking forward to Elyssa.

I’ll try the RC2. I’m already downloading it from Heanet (cant wait) but afterwards I’ll seed the torrent.

  3. I’m going to install and test it. I’m downloading it at the moment.
By the way: Is there some “Bug Reporting System” that one can use?

  4. Agreed. How to upgrade from 032 to 048 or from 032 (or 048, if i can upgrade to 048 from 032) to final? Or do we need to hold off till final to GET final.

  5. Awesome. But I think I’ll stick with the first beta and do a complete reinstall when the final comes out. Great job Clem. Looking forward to it 😛

  6. Just installed Elyssa RC2. Everything worked right first time! I had Elyssa BETA (032) installed on my second hard drive. The installation uses two partitions, one for / and one for /home. I reformatted the / partition and left the /home alone. I got a fresh installation of Elyssa and kept all my /home files in tact. Firefox RC1 is clearly faster than the beta release.
I cannot get the Administration -> Login Window to start. Might be a bug there.
    Great OS!

  7. Thanks for the tremendous effort on everyones part. Mint is what switched me from Winjunk to Linux and I eagerly await the stable. BTW, if you’re wondering who the idiot is that visits your website a million times a day….. that would be me! =) I keep hoping for the stable!

  8. I would like to know if Clem can fix the international clock bug. Every gnome with 2.22x has the new clock that’s supposed to have 12 and 24 hour configuration but it remains 24 hour no matter the configuration. In earlier gnome in the simple clock applet you had 12 hours config english only but when you change language 12 hour configuration disappears. The new international clock has a bug because it has 12 and 24 hours in all languages but it remains 24.

  9. Same bugs as reportet from me for 032.

Too bad. Daryna is better, because administration is easier with a working root account. I’m not a console junkie, so it looks like Ellysa isn’t for me, thank you.

    H.

  10. I have the same problem to Stuart: “can run the live CD perfectly but after I install it to my hard drive the boot sequence stops with the green bar chasing backwards and forwards and all hard drive activity stops. I have found that by adding “acpi=0ff” to the boot options cures the problem.

Other: Great OS!, thanks!!!

  11. I went ahead and did a hard install of RC2. So far, everything has worked like a charm. Wireless-n, printer, NVIDIA drivers, all the odd installs (FrostWire, Google Earth, GtkPod, Wine 1.0 RC, etc..) I did have an initial problem getting the Medibuntu repositories but I think it was their server — it did finally come in and I was able to do the Google Earth download.

Just a great BETA! I can’t imagine that the final RC could be much better, but maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Just curious Clem — when the final release does come out, any chance of being able to do an upgrade of this BETA to the final through MintUpgrade?

Again, great work and thanks for a great distro!

  12. As I said several times already both 032 and 048 have problems with Wine links. Wine links work from the desktop but not from the mintmenu. Crossover Office links do not work either from the desktop or the mintmenu. This is a very serious bug for many users. Please read it and try to fix it!!!

  13. Hi Clem

Great job! You are aware that the auto launch option of firefox is still there (Launching cannot find addy just the %20 problem still 🙂

    Excellent work!

  14. “and after that we should be looking at the first x64 or KDE ISOs.”

    KDE, KDE, KDE !

I think, ubuntu is the best choice for most people, but I personally don’t like GNOME, so as many other and kubuntu is kind of shitty imo, that’s why I love Mint 4.0 KDE, and sure I will love Mint 5 KDE, so please, do it before any other work like x64 🙂

  15. Hi All, further to my earlier observations, I have since tried out Ubunto 8.04 and had exactly the same issues as with Elyssa. I can run the live CD all ok but after installing to my hard drive the boot up sequence stops with the orange bar chasing to and fro’. Adding acpi=off to the boot options allows the system to boot. Anyone any ideas please?

  16. Clem, first time here, congratulations on you and your team’s outstanding contribution to the Linux desktop world.

I experienced the same endless loop on first booting Elyssa as Stuart and Carlos. I suspected it may have had something to do with importing my documents and settings from Daryna, so I reinstalled Elyssa without the import and everyting has worked perfectly since.

  17. Hi everyone, thanks for the hard work of releasing RC2

I had a fresh install, so far everything works fine, but I notice the loading takes significantly longer than Ubuntu 8.04 (what I previously installed on my laptop)

Just wondering if that’s something worth to bring up.

  18. Hi, I’ve just tested the live CD and it rocks! I’ll wait until the final release is available before installing it at my laptop.

  19. Hi, Some of the graphics setup has broken. I’m not totally suprised as it is the same in Ubuntu 8.04. I have an SiS graphics chipset (M671) which by default is supported using the VESA graphics setup but looks a bit fuzzy. In Darnya and Ubuntu 7.x this worked quite well and was easy to setup. In Ubuntu 8.04 and Elyssa it is a nightmare. Can we not have support for the SiS Chipsets? I managed to download some source and compile my own 2D driver so can it not be included in the distro by default?

A lot of entry level laptops are now using these chipsets and being sold without an OS as standard with the inference that you should use Linux on them. It would be one up for Mint if they could be supported out of the box. Buying an entry level PC often means entry level knowledge and even with a number of years of knowledge under my belt I have struggled with this chipset.

BTW tho. once I had complied the driver and got it working Elyssa just looks and works awesome. Thanks all.

  20. On my mother’s Wal-Mart Everex $199 box LinuxMint is the only distro that runs right. Of course, hardware restrictions make video and compiz out of the question but, the fact that it runs, and runs well, is amazing to me. RC1 is currently installed and will probably stay there for awhile. My mother has need of nothing else and talks about her “Linux Computer” to her puzzled elderly friends who endure endless hours of frustrations (and we hear the complaints all the time) on their Windows boxes.

The elderly love Linux and especially LinuxMint. This segment cannot be underestimated IMO. They need something that works and once they get used to Linux, they are sold on it. Trust me, they go through endless hassles with Windows and end up taking their boxes to the (hold nose) Geek Squad who hose them. They pay $$ to keep the sinking ship of Windows afloat and think this is “normal”. I show them Linux and tell them everything is free and they love it.

Do yourselves all a favor and install LinuxMint on a elderly neighbor, relative or friend’s computer. I can’t tell you how rewarding it is to see them actually enjoy computing again.

  21. hey guys ive had mint 5 running exceptionally well on my laptop works great. i havent had any problems except for working to get a network connection between 2 pc’s. I only have mint running on the system no more windows but it seems that i can only make a network work with windows and not with 2 mint machines. Any help would be great. I have been able to upgrade the system with all updates. and installing programs with out a quirk but the video drivers for the ati sometimes acts funny any responces would help tremmedously thnks for a great opperating system
