We’ve got a lot of news for you this month. Before we get into it, let me thank all those who send us their help and contribute to make our project grow. Many thanks to all of you for your donations. Thanks also to our partners and sponsors for being there for us.

Warpinator

With Warpinator you can quickly and easily transfer files from computer to computer across the local network. Warpinator was already available natively for Linux Mint 20, 20.1 and LMDE 4, and as a Flatpak for any other release and for other Linux distributions.

Today we’re delighted to announce that Warpinator is now also available for Android.

To install Warpinator on your Android device simply search for it in the play store, or use the link below:

This port is an independent project written with the Android SDK and led by a developer called “slowscript”. It is hosted on Github at https://github.com/slowscript/warpinator-android.

Aside from a few minor issues (the project is very young) the app already works very well. I was personally amazed to see Warpinator in the play store first, and then to see my phone and my computer see each others and be able to transfer files almost instantly.

I’m also really happy to see 3rd party developers build and improve on top of what we created. When we made Warpinator we solved a need we had within Linux Mint and made the software available for all Linux distributions, but although we wouldn’t spend the resources to make it work on other OSes (Android, iOS, Windows and Mac for instance) we wanted to use simple and open technologies to make it possible for this software to be developed by others. Today, seeing someone put the effort and come up with an Android build is a really cool feeling. I’m really happy to see this happen.

Within the Linux Mint development team Lars Mueller (known as Cobinja on github) has also been working on a mobile version of Warpinator. This is something he did on his own and it isn’t ready so we haven’t had the opportunity to try it yet. The interesting thing about this project is that it is based on the Flutter SDK so in addition to an Android app, it could also lead to making Warpinator available on iOS.

Shells.com

While we’re talking about mobile devices and exciting technology, wouldn’t it be great if you could run Linux Mint on your phone and tablet? or anywhere at all? Wouldn’t it be great if you could run Android apps on your computer? This is what Shells is working on and we’re excited today to start a partnership with them.

With Shells.com you can run Linux Mint:

  • in a Web browser on any web enabled device
  • in a desktop app in Windows, Mac or Linux
  • in a mobile app on an Android device
  • in a mobile app on iOS devices

Your desktop environment is in the cloud and immediately available to you from any device and from anywhere at all. Start using it at home on your computer. Open it up from work using a Web browser. Connect to it in the train with a tablet or even access it from that mobile phone in your pocket anytime you need and from anywhere.

To understand how it works imagine if your Virtualbox VMs were in the cloud. You create a “Shell”, select an OS such as “Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon” for instance and tell it to install. Once it’s ready you can boot it and access Linux Mint. You never really have to reboot or shutdown or even logout. You just access your environment when you need it.

Shells automatically performs snapshots. These are not Timeshift snapshots within the OS itself, but global snapshots which can be used to bring back the entire VM to an earlier state.

The pricing model is a monthly subscription per VM with an amount based on the resources allocated. As part of our partnership, Shells is offering 3 months for the price of 2 at https://www.shells.com/pricing?special=linux_mint. 10% of all subscriptions created from this link go towards Linux Mint.

Shells VMs can be hosted in the USA (Chicago, Dallas or Los Angeles), in the Netherlands or in Japan. They have a shared IP address and provide SSH/SFTP access by default. With an extra $1/month they also provide a public static IP address, so you can install any server application in them like you would in a local Linux Mint environment but benefit from the fact that it’s in the cloud.

We’ve been working in tight collaboration with Shells.com to get Linux Mint running and it’s a real pleasure to work with them. We’ve fixed many issues together already. I found them to be extremely able and available. I already worked with Alex Lee in the past and I’m really happy to work with him again.

Going forward Shells.com is planning to provide 3D acceleration to its VMs. This should benefit the Cinnamon desktop. They’re also working on Android. Although this isn’t ready yet, their developers already have an ALPHA with access to the Play store and support for SIP numbers (phone calls, SMS, etc..).

My experience with Shell is complex. I find the technology really amazing and extremely promising. It’s so versatile it really opens the door to a lot of new use cases. The idea that you don’t even need a laptop to carry your environment around, that it’s immediately available to you no matter where you are, no matter what kind of device you have in front of view, if any, that itself is really appealing but it can go from something that just sounds cool to something that is actually really handy depending on the person that is using it. To me here in my rural country side where I work from home and do not commute it just does sound cool but I don’t need it. If I think of my younger self who was traveling through Paris on a daily basis, working on side projects all the time and carrying devices and storage units just to do exactly that then it’s a completely different story. The quality of my network connection also comes greatly into play. Here although 20Mbps (2.5MB per second) is considered quite decent, it’s just not enough for this to be comfortable. It’s usable, I can launch Youtube or Hypnotix in it and watch fluid TV/videos, but moving windows is slow and there’s a noticeable delay which makes it more pleasant to use the local environment rather than the remote one. Again, if I was still living in Paris this would not be an issue. I can see how fluid and comfortable the experience is for people in the US, it’s just not the same here for me in Ireland.

If you are creative, if you travel or commute quite a bit and you enjoy a good connection to the Internet this can be a fantastic idea. If you’re not sure and you want to take it for a ride Shells lets you cancel and refunds your subscription within 7 days.

Hypnotix

Hypnotix shipped with a default provider called Free-IPTV. Tensions and personal conflicts arose between Free-IPTV and some of its Github forks, and with other IPTV projects which copied some of its content. This eventually resulted in Free-IPTV closing down its project.

Although this had nothing to do with Hypnotix it impacted users which used the default provider. As a result we changed the default provider from Free-IPTV to Free-TV. This provider is much smaller (it currently provides 114 channels as opposed to 2055 for Free-IPTV) but it’s also very clear on its mission. Similar to the previous provider it only provides free and publicly available TV channels and with an emphasis on quality over quantity.

Note: Hypnotix was also backported to the Linux Mint 20 repositories.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon 5 will provide management tools to check for and perform updates of Cinnamon spices. As a reminder, a Cinnamon “spice” is an add-on to the desktop environment which is not part of the core desktop. There are 4 types of spices:

  • applets (which run in panels)
  • desklets (which run on the desktop itself)
  • extensions (which modify how Cinnamon functions)
  • themes (which modify the way Cinnamon looks)

Until now to see updates and to apply them you had to go in the system settings or you had to use a 3rd party applet developed by Claudiux called “Spices Update“.

Cinnamon 5 will ship with a command line tool called cinnamon-spice-updater which can list available updates and/or apply them. To make it easy for distributions to integrate Cinnamon spice updates within their Update Manager a Python 3 module will also be provided.

Update Manager

The Mint Update Manager will support Cinnamon spice updates.

Although from a technical point of view they are radically different than APT updates, from a user point of view they will be presented in a very similar manner. You’ll be able to see the same kind of information for them, and to enjoy the same features as you did already, such as the ability to blacklist a particular spice or a version of a spice for instance.

You’ll also be able to automate spice updates. In automatic mode spices will be upgraded shortly after you log in, the DE will then get refreshed (this is barely visible, Cinnamon restarts itself seamlessly, you just see the mouse cursor get reset on the screen when this happens) and a notification will popup to show you what was upgraded.

The Update Manager will also handle the automation of Flatpak updates. This was previously located in “Startup Applications”.

Mint 18 EOL

It’s been 5 years already. Linux Mint 18, 18.1, 18.2 and 18.3 reached EOL (End of Life) this month and are no longer supported.

If you are running one of these releases your operating system will continue to work but you will no longer receive security updates from the repositories. We recommend you backup your data and perform a fresh installation of Linux Mint 20.1, which is supported until 2025.

Alternatively, you can upgrade to Linux Mint 19.3 which is supported until 2023:

The minor upgrades (18->18.3, 19->19.3) are quite simple, easy and fast. The upgrade from 18.3 to 19 on the other hand is a major upgrade. It is longer and more complicated. Take your time with this one and don’t hesitate to seek assistance within the community, in the chat room or on the forums.

Work continues on Linux Mint 20 “Ulyana” which is planned for June this year. Some of the features which were introduced in LMDE 4 were added to it, such as the live resolution bump in Virtualbox and the activation of APT recommends by default.

Linux Mint 20 will be available in 3 editions (Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce) but only in 64-bit. It will be based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and use a Linux 5.4 kernel.

Home directory encryption, which was removed in Ubuntu, will continue to be available.

In Cinnamon the most notable features will be the increased Nemo performance, the ability to change the monitor refresh rate and support for fractional HiDPI resolutions. The systray applet will also delegate support for indicators (libAppIndicator) and StatusNotifier (Qt and new Electron apps) icons to the Xapp StatusIcon applet directly.

On the desktop we’ll introduce a new file sharing tool which makes it really easy to send and receive files across the local network. As you know, we used a ridiculous sounding name to start working on this project and we were looking for a new name for it. We received a huge number of suggestions, which we considered and which we matched against one another. There were quite a few good names, but the funny ones didn’t sound as good as the original and the serious ones sounded too much like a Web 2.0 service. So after looking at names such as “Ethernator”, “Datanator”, “XFiles”, “Overcast”, “Capsule”, “DropZone”, we finally went back to the original name and decided to stick to it. “Warpinator” does sound ridiculous, but many people liked it and after hearing it so much we kind of get used to it.

Warpinator now encrypts communication on the network and includes all the features we planned for it this release cycle. It received a new icon and the only thing missing now are translations. If you want to give it a try, here are packages for Mint 19.3 and LMDE 4.

In LMDE 4, all you need is this package. Download it, install it, Gdebi should ask to install its dependencies and these are available in the LMDE 4 repositories.

In Linux Mint 19.3, the repositories don’t contain the required dependencies, so use the “Software Sources” tool to add the PPA below:

Then refresh your APT cache and you’ll then be able to install Warpinator using this package.

Apturl will use the aptdaemon backend instead of Synaptic and Gdebi will feature a newly revamped user interface:

The Mint-Y theme will provide much brighter colors than before. Here’s a comparison of some of the old colors (on the left) with some of the new ones (on the right):

Here’s Mint-Y-Blue as an example. It used to look like this:

and it now looks like that:

Yellow folders will also be available.

And as you enter the Linux Mint 20 desktop for the first time, the welcome screen will bring these colors to your attention and ask you which one you enjoy the most.

You can test these new colors by installing these packages. Use them for a few days to get used to them and let us know what you think.

And that’s all the news for this month. I hope you’ll enjoy playing with this early release of Warpinator. Don’t hesitate to send us your feedback and your bug reports. Many thanks to all the people who send us donations and help fund this project and to all the people involved in Linux Mint and its community.

Last month we talked about what it was like to develop free software and I shared some thoughts about the team, our work and our relationship with the community. I want to thank you all for your amazing response and the support you gave us. I don’t think we’ve ever received that many emails, comments and messages and that many encouragements. I didn’t expect it to be that big but here it is, it’s huge, right in front of us and we’ll always be able to look back at it whenever, if ever, we’re in doubt, you’re here for us, and you love our work. I’ve seen many people come here and post their very first comment after years of just reading the blog just to say they enjoyed what we were doing. That means a lot to me, I’m sure it means a lot to other users and developers too and all the people who contribute to Linux Mint. I wasn’t exactly looking for TLC when making this post last month, and we’re not “depressed” (as we could read in some blogs on the Internet), I wanted to address some points and spread the word a little more on what it was like for us as well… but I’m glad it was interpreted as it was, I’m glad the news was covered outside of our community and I’m really touched by your response to it. Thank you so much for this.

Last month I think I also talked a tiny bit too much about what was going on within the team. On the one hand it is part of my role to report on the progress being done, on the other hand we’re dealing with individuals, there are people involved, efforts being made, feelings which can be hurt and it’s part of my role also to protect that. If something won’t work out, we part ways, if something can’t make it in, we postpone it or reject it but when that happens I’m not sure we should necessarily talk publicly about it. There isn’t anyone involved who doesn’t want the best for Linux Mint and we all share the same goal, we all want more features, less bugs and an amazing new release. How we get to that isn’t always smooth and we can’t always agree on everything, but we’re a team and so I might mention individual names when things are great, but I hope you’ll understand I don’t when things don’t work out. We’ll face these issues together as a team and I don’t want anyone to feel bad or get the feeling that it’s their fault. Trying to help, no matter what the outcome is, is a great thing. You can’t be blamed for trying, especially not in public and I don’t want anyone to feel like they need to justify themselves one way or another.

Looking ahead I feel very comfortable again. Some issues are still on the horizon, there is uncertainty about some of the large things we’ve been working on (for me personally this includes the website and logo redesign), but we’ve reaffirmed what was important to us. We will get a great 19.2 release, no matter what, and we’ll enjoy working on it.

Server issues

The server issues we experienced at the beginning of April should hopefully be over. They were caused by power and capacity issues in one of the datacenters we’re using.

Developer Guide

The Developer Guide is ready. It describes the projects we work on, the technologies we use, and explains how to get set up, how to build packages and how to alpha-test. If you’re interested in development and you want to get involved this is a must read.

The guide is available in English, in HTML, PDF and ePub at https://linuxmint-developer-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/.

Let us know if you think anything isn’t clear or if you feel something is missing. We’ll add more content within the guide as we go along, not only as an introduction to newcomers but also as a reference for best practices.

Mint 17.x reached EOL

After 5 good years of service, Linux Mint 17.x (i.e. 17, 17.1, 17.2 and 17.3) reached “End Of Life”. Although the repositories will continue to work they will no longer receive security updates.

If you are running Mint 17.x, you can install Timeshift from the repositories, prepare system snapshots and plan to upgrade to Mint 18 using this tutorial: https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2316.

Don’t hesitate to ask for help or to report issues so we can get you to version 18 safely.

Samba

With every new package base we experience regressions. This was key in our decision to stick to LTS and it helped us focus on development while underneath, the base we were using for 5 years could continue to mature. This decision boosted our development pace and increased the quality of our distribution. When with Linux Mint 19 we jumped to Ubuntu 18.04, along with the many improvements and new software versions, we also inherited regressions, some of them quite frustrating to users: Wine, scanner and printer, and Samba to name a few.

These kind of issues are common on new package bases and they happen often in rolling distributions or in non-LTS releases. They eventually get fixed, in these rolling distributions and non-LTS releases first and then the fix usually gets backported to the LTS base.

This hasn’t happened with Samba yet. When something important we don’t maintain doesn’t work properly, and it’s been a while, we usually consider pinning it. In other words we look at whether or not we can backport a newer version which fixes the issue, or bring back an earlier version which didn’t suffer the issue. In the case of Samba this is not possible, not only because of Samba’s complexity and large number of dependencies (it just doesn’t easily compile like that across bases) but also because pinning this package in Mint would be a maintenance issue due to the number of vulnerabilities found in Samba and how often it receives security updates.

Samba supports different communication protocol versions. In Mint 18.x Samba 4.3 was mostly using a protocol version called NT1 which worked well and continues to work well. After Windows was badly affected by ransomware attacks, Microsoft decided to retire NT1 and the Samba team worked on switching more towards some of the newer protocol versions such as SMB2 and SMB3. These changes created regressions and Ubuntu is currently in the process of trying to tackle them.

Two of the most important issues are reported on Launchpad at:

Additional information was put in the release notes and the fact that Samba worked better in Mint 18.x was clearly stated. It is my opinion that users relying on Samba a lot should be recommended to stick to Mint 18.x until these issues are fully resolved.

While looking through all of this, we also identified areas of improvements within Linux Mint. In particular, although samba itself still shouldn’t part of the default installation, smbclient should. It will be there by default again in Linux Mint 19.2 and future releases.

In Cinnamon, nemo-share is responsible for integrating samba with the desktop and making it easy for users to share directories. Although nemo-share itself doesn’t do all that much, it is key in how easy sharing feels to the user. Here is what it does for you in Mint 19.1:

  • It installs samba
  • It adds you to the sambashare group for samba to work properly
  • It creates the share and checks/fixes its permissions if appropriate

Thanks to nemo-share, you don’t need to use the command line or install samba manually. You right-click a directory, share it, reboot, and you’re done. It just works! Well… most of the time it does.

While troubleshooting Samba and working on this I saw many people on the forums experience the same issues and receive help from other users. I saw a really cool checklist on the forums (I want to thank the few people in our forums who documented these issues by the way and helped so many users already) and I though.. wait.. some of these issues shouldn’t happen at all, we can identify them before they happen and make the user aware of them. So that’s what we did, in Mint 19.2 nemo-share will do a little more than before:

  • After it installs Samba it will add firewall rules to let it work with UFW
  • When setting up a share, it will check the permissions not only on the directory itself but on its entire path, to make sure other users can access it.
  • When sharing a directory within an encrypted home directory, it will mention to the user that the share won’t be accessible without using “force user” in the Samba configuration.
nemo-share detecting a potential issue

In essence, it still doesn’t do much more than before, but by reporting these issues earlier we go from a situation where the user doesn’t understand why Samba isn’t working, to a situation where an explicit warning and a clue are given the minute an issue might require the user’s attention.

Last but not least, we thought it was a little tedious that you couldn’t go back “up” (i.e. with the toolbar button in Nemo) towards “network:///” when at the root of share, so we fixed that as well.

Some of these changes might make their way into caja and caja-share as well.

On Github this is documented at https://github.com/linuxmint/linuxmint/issues/125.
