Linux Mint 7 x64 released!

The team is proud to announce the release of Linux Mint 7 “Gloria” x64.

Quick steps:

Introduction to Linux Mint 7 x64:

This x64 edition of Linux Mint 7 is almost identical to the Main Edition but compiled for 64 bit processors (Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core 2 Quad, AMD Athlon X2 64 and all x86-64 compliant processors). It comes with all the improvements featured in Linux Mint 7 Gloria Main Edition.

System requirements:

An X86_64 64 bit processor (Intel Core 2, AMD X2 64, etc…) .

A minimum of 512MB of RAM is recommended. Once installed the system works fine with as low as 256MB RAM. The installation process deals with 2.5GB of data compressed on a 700MB CD and it can hang or fail on systems with less than 512MB RAM. If you have between 256MB and 512MB RAM you may have to try to install several times.

Important information and known issues:

For a complete list of known issues read the Release Notes.

The root password is now set as the same as the one chosen during the installation. A blog post will follow to explain why and how this was implemented.

If you’re using Mint tools in other distributions, make sure to turn off the adjustment system by editing /etc/linuxmint/mintSystem.conf.

  1. I just bought a new laptop, ASUS F5 and Mint 7 installed great, I stuck with the 32 bit edition as I found too many problems with my printer drivers to go with the 64 bit edition. The biggest problem I found, immediately after booting the laptop for the first time I had a very bad virus, I think it was called Vista..but I soon eradicated this by re formatting the hard drive.

  2. Great news, in my opinion Linux Mint is the best Debian based distribution and the best experience in GNU/Linux for novice and more advanced user. I’m using it in my laptop without any problem πŸ™‚
    Thank you.

  3. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome!!!!!!!!

This rocks on my quad-core desktop machine. Thanks!

    (Ummm… How about a netbook remix? πŸ˜‰

  5. I’ve got a desktop with Windows XP setup in RAID0. Can I install Linux Mint 7 x64 in parallel in a RAID configuration? If so, how do I do it?

    Thanks.

  6. BRILLIANT – LINUX MINT IN 64BIT
going to ditch jaunty 64bit tomorrow for this
    thanks to clem and team
    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO πŸ˜‰

  7. The Gloria Release Notes still reads “mint4win doesn’t work in the RC release. This will be fixed in time for the stable release of Linux Mint 7 Gloria.” This should probably be removed now that we’re at the stable release for both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions?

  8. Many, many thanks, Mint Team!!! Mint is the distro of choice… and x64 is the creme de la creme!!! Once again, A THOUSAND THANK-YOU’s!!!

  9. I have an Intel dual core machine (with 2GB RAM) and am running Mint7 32-bit version. I have tweaked and optimized, and other than a few niggling items I’d say it’s setup and running very well. I really enjoy it.

Would I benefit much by upgrading to a 64-bit version? My biggest concern is the things I configure/customize after install – like graphics settings , wireless drivers (finally got working!) , ssh server , vmware server2, etc

How does upgrading work – is it more like a fresh install or an upgrade? I have many applications installed outside of standard Mint7 ones … do they need to be re-intstalled and re-configured?

Thanks – I love Mint7!!, just not sure if migratingto a 64-bit version is worth the effort for me

  10. Dear Mint Linux team,

Testing the previous gloria release (x86) – Congratulations on a very fine Linux release, and one that is polished, smart, and aimed at end users.

This release builds upon your previous one, and really is very very good.
The X86 version installs, and works with all the devices and hardware on the Dell Mini9 – Thanks for your hard work

  11. I’m anxiously waiting for it to show up in mintUpdate! (yes I enabled dist-upgade). RC is a charm to work with nonetheless. thanks so much for your fantastic work!! πŸ™‚

  12. After a weeks frustration with Fedora 11….. sanity is restored again!

Downloading right now – so I’ll have it burned to disk and installing by 1am… can’t wait!

  13. excellent release and it isnt just for noobs, even professionals enjoy its clean ease of use while still allowing you to use jaunty ppa’s. Love the theme

  14. I just installed ubuntu ultimate.. nothing like 2,300 packages and 5 choices for everything, but it works GREAT.. I’ll be replacing it with Mint as soon as the ISO is burned.. GREAT job everyone.. I look forward to using this release asap

  15. Congratulations! πŸ™‚ Now I know it’s not an easy summer for you but can you tell us in a short 1, 2, 3 manner what your priorities are? It’s just I’m eagerly waiting for Mint LXDE CE and I’m curious if it will finally come around and if so… when? I really need it for an old laptop. I’d would even install it today if I had it. I asked in the forum but I got no answer. πŸ™ How’s McLovin? I hope he’s fine and dandy and he will be able to finish Mint LXDE CE rather sooner than later.

    Cheers!

  16. Ok – I finished installing about 2am… – ok, this girls tired after a very full day of meetings etc…

First impression…. lovely! 2nd impression….. a touch slow when trying to start things – at least the Vista VM worked well – which, since one of my roles is as an Office Developer, that’s an essential.

I’m just about to try it with the mobile broadband and install the bits I need for my own graphics business…

I never rate anything at 10… except me! But this release is a nice 9!

When’s the 64 bit KDE version going to be available? – Gnome looks pretty… but KDE works right!

  17. Great!
    I’m eagerly awaiting the upgrade-route via Mint-update.
Here’s hoping that Sat HD-cards will get some support soon.
    Thanks from the Netherlands.

  18. Linux Mint’s the only Debian-based distro that actually works, in my experience. Though, my timing is utterly awful–I just installed version 6 this morning, and what do I see when I start firefox? XD

  19. Thank you very much Mint-Team.
Installing absolutely flawless, the Mint7 x64 is up and running on my HP DV6799EG Special Edition. Everything went fine.

30mins earlier i tried to upgrade vom Mint6 x64, but it wont let me follow your short guide (sorry, forgot the exact error). Thanks again for this beautiful and stable release.

  20. Clem,

I am trying to update from x64-RC1 as specified in this post but mintupdate doesn’t find anything. Something missing?

  21. I made a fresh install yesterday over Gloria 32bit but kepp my home partition. Most of my previous settings icons, theme, wireless, graphic remained the same and everything is working great.

    Wooohooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Congratulations Clem, Exploder and all the team! Fantastic job.

  22. A very nice product that is finally determining my abandoning MS.

This version is also the first to abolish the impossibility of wifi with my Atheros card. It now connects painlessly almost before Mint 7 has finished loading!

    Many thanks for your efforts.

  23. Awesome, downloading now. Great job guys, been using Mint 7 x86 edition for my desktop, my moms laptop, and my brothers laptop (all 32bit processors). Now I can finally update my laptop from Mint 6 x64. I’ve been checking the site nearly every day and now that it’s here it feels like christmas. Thanks again Mint team.

  24. Fantastic,I’ve downloaded the linux mint7 Gloria and installed it in my LG ED500.It is working fine.May I request the team to announce a stable dependable kde version of this edition soon.It will be more enjoyable.

  25. Mint 7 x64 is by far the easiest distro I have ever used! It has been awhile since I used Linux, and wow do things change quickly. Finally a distro that has excellent multimedia and hardware support that almost rivals Windows! For years I have tried other distros, and they all fell short on something, that always brought me back to Windows, that is until now. After running both Windows 7 x64 RC and Mint 7 X64 RC, on my aging 5 year old machine, Mint 7 not only runs more efficiently, but requires less hard drive space and resources. My aging 5 year old machine (AMD 64 3000+, 80Gb IDE Hard Drive, 2Gb RAM, 128 ATI 9600 Radeon Video Card AGP) can keep up with Windows 7’s Aero theme, but barely. However, on my old machine compiz has no problem, imagine that! Thank you mint team for breathing some new life into my 5 year old machine, I am now officially a Linux re-convert.

  26. Thanks a lot, guys! I’ve already installed it on my Acer Aspire (at last, I decided to switch to 64 bit πŸ˜‰ )

  27. I’ve been suffering with my documents ever since i’ve had this version of windows (vista). Its encouraging to see there’s an alternative that may be able to save me from all this invisible overbearing control.

  28. ΧžΧ–Χœ Χ˜Χ•Χ‘, Clem! This is another indisputable milestone attained, on the Linux Mint 7 roadmap. I wish you continued success with the Community releases of this version, and look forward to installing LM7 KDE CE in place of my LM7 ME (in which I replaced all Gnome elements with their KDE equivalents).

    All the best!

  29. installed like a charm, i’m using it now, it’s really a great release.
thanks, keep up the great work!
    leo

  30. Another great job by the team !
As I’d hoped, the shared repository links and dependencies now work well over the RC release, and I’ve been able to apply my usual customizations, even including MTink for my Epson Ink-Jet printer.
As per Ubuntu 9.04, I’m finding that the 64-bit version is also a bit slicker, so it’s now replaced 32-bit Gloria as my default distribution !

  31. I’ve installed it in my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo pi 3540, and there is -no way- to have Nvidia and Compiz working together. πŸ™

  32. I’ve been building myself a workstation for HD_TV SD_TV editing. I have a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H motherboard with a AMD64 X2 4200 processor which uses Dual channel 128 bit ram (4gb installed to date). I have tried many distros looking the best performance possible. OMG! this one
really opens this box up!!!!! For example, this distro installed in less than 30 minutes! I had a HP s3100n dual core processor which took over one minute to render the ufraw plugin in Gimp, using other 86x_64
distros. With this one it rendered in less than “TEN” seconds! If you have the arch that this is built for you have got to get this one!!!!!!!!!!

  33. hello, congratulations for linux mint, is te best distribution from me and the designer is very beautiful. Sorry from my english and a greeting from spain

  34. next time the 64 bit release must be before the 32 bit released.
Why best computers have to wait more than old computers?

  35. I have been running the “Gloria”32bit on a Dell Inspiron,4Gb ram.along side Vista(don’t use much since converting!).Really a very, very easy Distro to set up,and use.Downloading the 64 now.Keep up the fantastic work!I have tried a few other flavors, and the Mint definitely tastes best! Kudo’s!

  36. I installed mint 7 x64 on my toshiba U200 1 GB RAM and everything seems ok including wireless, bluetooth, ethernet and even my officejet printer-scanner and usb-adsl modem without installing any driver. wonderful and significant faster operating system than Vista. Easily installed to another partition without any problem with Vista. Thanks a lot to everyone contributing.

  37. Does this include these codecs?
    xvid,x264,wmv(?),techsmith etc…
Are those available with native 64 bit support or emulated?
What about the flash and shockwave?
Is there any chm file reader out of the box?

Waiting for an XFCE x64 version…….
If XFCE version can significantly outperform gnome and kde (on same x64 hardware) why cant us give precedence for that? (suggestion from a performance crazy man )
Where can i find benchmarks of xfce 4.6 vs gnome vs kde
Thanks a lot and congrats to the team.

  39. “An upgrade path for Linux Mint 6 β€œFelicia” x64 users will be published in a few days.”

I have been patiently waiting for the instructions. Any idea when they might be available?

  40. Just ordered $400 of HW (including shipping). Downloaded this new Mint 7 x64 and will hopefully have everything together by next weekend. Now if I can get it to run Lego Indiana Jones, I can totally kick my MS addiction.

  41. Hi folks.

I tried out Linux-Mint 7 x64 very extensively. Unfortunately I had tons of issues with the memory management and general integration of the desktop. I would run a couple of programs and hit the full 4Gb of RAM usage (that is with an 8Gb swap). Some wierd cache would appear using up 66% of the RAM (couldn’t pin this down with htop, syslog, etc.). I could not pin down any memory leaks (like the known problems with Linux-Mint 6/ Ubuntu 8.10 x64 that will never be backported I gather).

Also had issues with Multimedia. Spent hours cobbling a working solution to the broken Intel HDA sound. I could cludge a D-Pro Logic II stereo setting out of ALSA via SPDIF (no DD5.1 – let alone DD Live) – after applying multiple fixes to the (as usual broken) ALSA. The switches did not always work as intended (for example analogue sound would come out along with the digital output)…

Compiled up the execellent MPlayer from source and used the SMPlayer frontend. But had all kinds of problems getting the SMPlayer window to stay on top of my other desktop windows. The powersave would keep blanking the screen while it was playing back videos. My multimedia keys weren’t recognised at all by SMplayer (despite have a keybindings options tab).

All a crying Shame because Mint just is so well laid out – but the bugs can just overwhelm a guy in the end! Just had to go back to Windows XP x64 in the end in total frustration!

    Bob
