Many thanks for your donations and for your support.
I’d like to welcome and thank our new sponsor: IPv6rs. They specialize in self hosting solutions and make it easy to host a server from anywhere, at home, on the go, on your own computers. Many thanks to them for supporting our project!
Many thanks also to all the people who are participating in the BETA phase for Linux Mint 22. We received 109 bug reports so far, 53 are still open.
I’ll be very brief with the news this month because the BETA is taking all our time.
Linux Mint 22 looks like a solid base for the future, but there are many bugs in this BETA. Some of the issues are important (apparmor security changes leading to application crashes, HW acceleration playback libs making Xorg crash, Flatpak/mintinstall issues…etc.) so we’re really happy to get this feedback before the stable release. We’re fixing them bit by bit and sending updates as we go along. It’s exciting, the release gets better every day, but it takes time.
It’s hard to give a precise ETA for the Stable release. We will release this month, but this BETA phase will take longer than the traditional 2 weeks.

I Love Clem. (in a friend way)
Greetings
Wilma for the win !!! Thank you for this great operating system.
@ Sussy Eve: Debian 13 “Trixie” already looks very promising in testing. LMDE 7 “Metatron” (my name suggestion) based on Debian 13 “Trixie” will be mega. Trust me.
LMDE 7 ” Neo” or “Morpheus” would also be a cool name based on Trixie (Matrix).
Greetings and happy week
LMDE Enjoyer
i just realized her name was trinity not trixie. sheeeesh. nvm then 😀
I can only speak for myself, obviously, but give it the time it needs, until you are sufficiently content.
As the last comment says, please give the beta version time until all bugs are fixed. Great things take time, and Linux Mint 22 will certainly be great.
Great job Clem & team! As usual, u guys are doing an amazing job. I understand that upgrade instructions will be released later, but just a question for my understanding. Every major upgrade will be done via upgrade tool right? Just like how u guys did for LM 21. I really appreciate this clarity and the dedication you guys have for keeping this community up and running.
Hi Vivek,
Yes, we’ll use mintupgrade for this major update.
Thank you so much for the response, Clem! I appreciate that the team is working really hard. I think you guys should take your time to test it fully before release. We can definitely wait for it, no rush. I am very sure v22 wilma going to give a better experience.
It is better that you take all the time necessary to tune the lm22 to the maximum. Don’t worry about rushing the launch. Thank you for your tireless work at LM.
Thank you very much Clem and team for your incredible work, take the time necessary in the adjustments and correcting errors, Linux Mint 22 will be released when it has to be released, in the meantime we continue enjoying Linux Mint 21.3
Totally agree. Take your time and release when you are happy with the bug squashing. One of the (many) nice things about Mint is the stability and reliability. Thanks, Clem, to you and the team for all your hard work.
Great stuff. Thank you for all this hard work.
As a minor heads-up, the Release Notes can remove the old warning about Home directory encryption not working. The linked bug report shows Fix Released in 2021, and I’ve just checked that this beta does correctly unmount the encrypted home directory when the user logs-out.
I’ve been using Linux Mint 21.3 for 1 and a half years and everything works perfectly. I am very happy with this wonderful distro. On computers where I have Mint installed, everyone likes it. Thank you for your excellent work and for providing us with this excellent distro.
Yes take your time.
Great stuff, thanks for everything you do for Mint. I have a question non related to this post: What happened with the partnership with Mozilla announced in jan/2022? (https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4244)
Part of the deal was that Mint would use the official icon for Firefox, something that didn’t happened. The deal never came to be? What happened?
Hi Nash,
It did. We’ve got a great partnership with Mozilla. We ship their binary and our icon was approved by them.
Dear Clem and team,
take your time, in the meanwhile, here are the thanks for the excellent job.
I adhere to the comments above and emphasise that we are not indifferent to the effort and dedication you invest in this project, especially the continuity and stability between one version and the next. Personally I say to you, that this user vision gives Linux Mint a special position, very dear to all of us, the users.
Keep up the amazing work and thanks once again to the whole team.
Always happy when a new version of Linux Mint is published. I’m using at home and work and all my family is using at home. A very nice Linux distribution.
I read the comment below on the phoronix forum. There are others on this subject but this one is the most telling and I must say that they are not entirely wrong…
For me it has always been difficult to know which version of Ubuntu corresponded to the version of Mint that I was using to make PPA settings, etc. I always had to do research to be sure and it is frankly a bit of a pain in the ass in a way.
I would still prefer Major.Minor numbering, like this:
Mint 24.0 = Ubuntu 24.04
Mint 24.1 = Ubuntu 24.04
Mint 24.2 = Ubuntu 24.04
Mint 24.3 = Ubuntu 24.04
I agree. When the numbers lined up for Mint 20/Ubuntu 20.04, I thought that would be really cool if they remained in-sync.
Ubuntu uses release dates for their version numbers. Linux Mint releases one new major release per 2-year Ubuntu LTS cycle and uses the Major.Minor numbering like you that you propose. It’s a coincidence that the major version numbers are so close at the moment (22 vs. 24.04). Because of the 2-year per major release cycle, the version numbers will drift further apart in the future. The next major release from Linux Mint will be “23” and it will be based on Ubuntu 26.04. The major release after that will be LM24 and will be based on Ubuntu 28.04.
Linux Mint would need to skip one major release number each time to stay in sync with Ubuntu.
-type in terminal: uname -a, then you will see the Ubuntu version among other infos (machine name, kernel version, Ubuntu version, etc)
-type in terminal: dmesg, then look at the first row, look for something like 1ubuntu1~22.04…
-type in terminal: inxi -Fzxx -you will see a brief information about your machine, in first “System” section something like this:
Kernel: 6.5.0-41-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: N/A
Desktop: Cinnamon 6.0.4 tk: GTK 3.24.33 wm: muffin dm: LightDM
Distro: Linux Mint 21.3 Virginia base: Ubuntu 22.04 jammy
– You can use also the mintReport tool for this information….
Another really simple solution would be to open “System Info” from the mint menu. This seamlessly works in Cinnamon version. Hope this helps!
I wonder how does it look with Steam? The deb package got replaced with Snap version in Ubuntu and since Linux Mint now hides unverified Flatpak apps by default, it probably will be missing in Software Manager by default, right?
Can you show me a link to this? I still see a deb when looking for Steam in 24.04.
Hello Clem, Interesting, you’re right! I clearly remember someone from Canonical talking about removing the deb version of Steam in Ubuntu 24.04, but it looks like that they postponed that decision. (It still does not install on Ubuntu 24.04 because of a missing i386 architecture, but that’s a different problem.)
there are still conflicting reports about this, and i’ve yet to see Canonical admit to it, but on Steam for Linux discussions forum in Steam there’s growing evidence that they did to “apt install steam” what they’ve done to firefox and chromium in the past… the apt package seems to have been hollowed and turned into a steam snap installer, leaving ubuntu users a choice between the snap package (still suffering significant bugs), the flatpak package (increasingly viable, but confusing to noobs because the sandbox doesn’t see external drives, etc) and the .deb file distributed at Valve’s website (used to not carry all required dependancies, not sure if it works better nowadays)
ps: it might not have affected all current ubuntu versions
pps: please don’t take my word for it… as i don’t use Ubuntu myself i haven’t checked the current situation, just relayed the chatter i’ve observed in steam forums
I totally agree with Mr. Clem, I am patiently waiting for LM22, i prefer a stable and safe operating system.
I completely agree, it’s better to wait for a stable and secure distribution and without admixtures of bugs, as in Ubuntu. Clem, I really thank you and your team for doing a herculean job towards the world of desktop Linux, which would be easy to master and comfortable to use.
And I myself notice that it gets better and better with each version. Thank you very much for Linux Mint!
Hi clem:
I know it’s super late for such a feature to be implemented now, and I am not really pushing for it to be implemented now, just an idea for a future release:
Have you considered a recovery system similar to the one found under Pop_OS’s recovery partition.
It’s a special fat32 partition that gets update separately. it allows the user to boot into it directly and repair the system or reinstall it directly in case of a disaster without needing to create a USB drive.
Also considering Timeshift has specific options for BTRFS, what do you think about defaulting to a BTRFS setup at some point in the future? That way its setup will be easier for most people. Especially if you want to upgrade your release(which soft requires timeshift to be set up)
Thanks for reading this.
Polish that thang! Thank you for all your work.
Can you, please, put donations and mirrors in an HTML [details] (angle brackets, of course) so it is collapsed by default and doesn’t take up so much space on the listing?
I don’t know where else to mention this, but are there any plans to bridge the Matrix server onto IRC in order to enable guest participation without needing an account?
(DISCLAIMER: I actually have been using Matrix for years now and already have an account, but it could be a bit tedious to log in if one is needing to use a live ISO for whatever reason, like for recovery purposes and such)
I noticed noticeable flaws in the beta version of Linux Mint and they need to be fixed
1. There is no xplayer media player in the Mint beta repository, since for me it will be inconvenient to use the best player for videos and movies without it. Alternatives like VLC and SMPlayer are not really good for me.
2. In the beta version of Mint, the GNOME clock must be rolled back to version 41, since it is new and it is under libAdwaita, which means that applications under libAdwaita spoil everything.
Good luck with the best development and we, as users, love and appreciate you!
Hello Ioann:
Thanks for your kind comments for the development team. I just wanted to remark that gnome-clocks is not part of the base applications included on the Linux Mint ISO, and as such, it would be a back breaking task to do that for every gnome application in the Ubuntu repository.
HI every ones . I am running presently LMDE 6 and LM 22 Beta in dual boot and I have noticed that deep hibernation is available in LMDE 6 but not in LM 22 Beta. Why?
Hello all
Question: has the closing menu been taken into account in LM 22? After all, now it happens that you cannot close because an update is in progress. Maybe a tip to add a text to the closing menu during updating, for example: An update is in progress, please be patient. Good luck with completing the other bugs. Thanks to all the team members for doining a great job.
Hopefully the upgrade from LM21 to LM22 will work better than last time. Two years ago I had to reinstall everything from scratch because conflicts and failures could not be fixed by the upgrade program.
Whether the process goes well or poorly depends largely on whether the user adds external repositories. In general, a clean installation is always recommended. This does not have to mean losing data or settings if you keep the system and home in different partitions. You can also use very useful third-party programs for these cases, such as Aptik:
https://teejeetech.com/product/aptik/
Regards.
Using VirtualBox I found this issue in all three LM22 BETAs.
LibreOffice launcher is missing both Math Formula and Base database packages. The LO Base database graphic is featured in the information slides shown during each installation.
A number of years back ( I believe it was during LO18 or LO19 ) the missing LO Base database still had a graphic showing in the launcher; but, did nothing when selected.
It seemed to be a significant problem for novice users, then and I believe would again be. Novice users don’t immediately understand that they could seach for the LO Base database package.
Clem, what you all do to LMDE6 XFCE 32 bit? Cinnamon goes into fallback mode. Is there a fix for it? LMDE5 worked perfect.
Just doing my regular duty to remind that the GTK file chooser dialog is horrible.
I’ve counted 38 complaints on the Forums so far. Here’s one from Reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/1e8e69x/are_better_file_searches_in_firefox_possible/
Nope. Will not be using LM22.
Got an early LM22 download and decided to try it. Took just short of 4 minutes to boot up to the live system. The screen stuttering when the cursor is in the bottom half of the screen is still present. Very annoying.
Tried LM21.3 and LMDE6 live systems and both took less than 40 sec. to boot up. And no screen stuttering. Very disappointing. Decided to stick to LMDE6 for now.
Regards
What hardware are you running Mint on? I’ve personally never seen anything like that happen on any system I’ve ever installed Mint on. LM22 seems to boot perfectly normally in my tests, and “screen stuttering” sounds like there’s maybe something strange going on with your GPU drivers. But without any information about your exact setup, that’s probably all anyone could say about your situation.
I suggest sending in a bug report on the Linux Mint Github, with as much detail as possible about your hardware, the drivers that are installed, the unusual things you’re seeing happen on your system, and any system logs you can provide. This will help them help you better than complaining on the blog posts will.
I have a System 76 laptop made for linux (Pop_os and Ubuntu) with an 8th generation I5, 8G of RAM and integrated Intel video card. So not a basement level laptop. But it did suffer a “partially burnt” mother board last year near Christmas. That was repaired, I had started to notice the problem when some screen stuttering and blinking on/off appeared. I will admit that it is possible that LM22 will not do on the repaired laptop.
Tried some “modern” (latest kernels) distros and I did notice that the Ubuntus do show screen stuttering but very mild and not annoying. Most distros act normal.
Think I will try to stick to LM21.3 and simply install newer kernels.
Regards
I just hope that the updated Cinnamon will be ported to LMDE6.
Regards
