Happy New Year 2022!

Happy New Year everyone!

Linux Mint 20.3 will be available this week, both as a stable release and as an upgrade. The ISO images are currently going through QA testing. We’ll make separate announcements for the upgrade and for the release as soon as they are available.

I’d like to thank all the people who tested the BETA and helped us identify bugs. Thanks to your feedback we went through 85 reports and were able to address many usability issues.

As always I’d like to thank all of you also who donate to our project and continue to support us financially. Many thanks for being there for us.

I hope you’ll enjoy our latest release and I wish you a very happy new year.

  1. Happy new year Clem, Mint Team et all!

Great news, being patiently-ish waiting for Mint 20.3’s release. It gives me some butterflies in my stomach but the Release When Ready is the best way to go, IMHO. I’d rather wait a few more days or weeks and know I have an OS stable enough I can trust right into production than having a disfuncional broken thing on time with a hype that in the end just reveals frustration.

Kudos and my best wishes for 2022 and happy “Minting”!

  2. Happy New Year!
Thanks to all the LM team for the effort in improving this great distro.

PS. Apparently they found the source of a flickering menu bug that was also in the 20.3 beta [cinnamon/issues/10573].

    1. Hi Seb,

It was a regression in 20.2 and at the moment it’s still there in 20.3. We know the cause but we don’t have a solution for it yet. It’s a clutter rendering bug which was introduced when we fixed the menu’s maximum size and added a dynamic scrolledwindow in the category box. We’re working on a mutter rebase for Mint 21 and we noticed the issue no longer happens there. If we find a solution before then we’ll send an update to 20.3 and a backport towards 20.2.

  3. Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon Latest 5.13(5.13.0.23) HWE Kernel and the Boot is very slow and Cinnamon will not start. Had to revert to 5.13.0.22. ASUS TUF FX505DY-WH51 Laptop.

But what will Linux Mint 20.3 use as an LTS Kernel?

    1. I had some difficulties with the recent 5.13 kernel on my ASUS TUF 706IH-ES75, although it was primarily with graphics problems (the screen was completely filled with what looked like old TV static, so I never even got to see boot speed or any UI). It was frustrating, since my system can’t run the 5.4 kernel, and the only other kernel I could see in Update Manager’s kernels window that had any usable support length was 5.13. Someone suggested I switch to the 5.14 OEM kernel (available through Synaptic, but not Update Manager until after it’s been installed). After doing that, everything seems to work perfectly fine again.

    2. Looking forward to the release. I was wondering, do you think the latest Ubuntu OEM kernels e.g. currently 5.14-oem, might be an option for Edge or be made available in Update Manager kernels? Seems like in some cases those provide better functionality with less risk of regressions

    3. I’ve reverted 2 systems(AMD Ryzen 3000 series APU Based) back to 5.13.0.22 from 5.13.0.23(Bugs) via system snapshots and both are using the AMD Ryzen 3000 series generation processors(APUs) with Vega integrated graphics and the one laptop also came with Radeon RX 560X Discrete laptop graphics. But that 5.13.0.23 Kernel still shows up as available and I’ve placed that into the Blocked status temporarily and that faulty Kernel is still showing up as available in the update manager’s show Linux Kernels listing and I hope that they stop offering that from the Ubuntu Kernel offerings soon. But maybe the issue is not widespread enough yet.

There are 5 generations of AMD Ryzen APUs with Integrated Vega Graphics but most of the reports that I have seen currently are Ryzen 3000 series APU related which is Zen+ with Vega Integrated graphics. So My laptop has a Ryzen 5 3550H/Vega 8 integrated graphics/RX 560X(Polaris) discrete GPU and My Mini PC(ASRock Desk Mini X300) has a Ryzen 3400G/Vega 11 Graphics.

I always Snapshot my system before a kernel update and only after applying any other updates that where available at that time and only Apply the Kernel Update by itself after my systems get a fresh timeshift snapshot. Timeshift comes in handy a lot of times.

    4. sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d gets you the 5.14 kernel and takes care of the issues you are having with 5.13.0.23.

    5. Same situation here: Lenovo IdeaPad S145 with Ryzen 7 3700U, had issues when booting with kernel 5.13.0-23 and fixed by rebooting to 5.13.0-22 then uninstalling 5.13.0-23 and including it to the list of blocked updates… I can also confirm that the kernel management gui still lists it, and unfortunately have also noticed that blocking the package did not prevent Linux Mint’s auto-update from reinstalling it (twice already!)… the blocked package is “linux-meta-hwe-5.13=5.13.0.23.23~20.04.10″… am I blocking the wrong one?

    6. double good news here:
      – linux kernel 5 13.0-24 has just been released and fixed the issue on my laptop
      – there was no bug in the autoupdate feature causing the offending kernel to be reinstalled after I blacklisted it, I was just being dumb and forgetting to export the blacklist to /etc/mintupdate.blacklist

  4. Rockin the new beta 20.3 Cinnamon without any errors what so ever, no flickering what at all. Lets get this puppy out into the wild, lol.

    1. hello

soon available not I think not but it means that (finally!) they will start working on it!(lmde is unfortunately still the last wheel of the coach)

  5. Bonne Année !!!! happy New Year and thank you guys so much for all your hard work ! I enjoy Mint everytime I use my computer without ever using Windows anymore, for over 10 years ! ! Keep up the great work and have a good one !

  6. Hello, thank you!
Will the next version be Mint 20.4 or Mint 21?
Will the Firefox icon ever change to the original one?

    1. Hi Nich,

      Mint 21.

The Firefox icon and search engines are changing in 20.3 following a new partnership with Mozilla. This currently affects the BETA. It will affect new installations and upgrades. We’ll make an announcement in the coming days also and backport this change to existing releases.

  7. I have an old MacBook Air (2011) I lost the touch pad, although every once in a while it moves a bit. Any solution? Otherwise it works fine on all of my other Macs running 20.3. Just a One Off?

  8. Happy New Year All!

Curious…ever thought about a version of Mint based on whatever is the latest version of Ubuntu?

    1. Mint has changed to LTS Ubuntu in 2014 because the intermediate Ubuntu versions are rather experimental anyway. The objective of Mint is providing a stable distro. Besides, the intermediate Ubuntu versions are only supported for 9 months. On the other hand, it takes about 2 months from an Ubuntu release to the Mint release, which would leave only 7 months of operation. Combine that with the work on the Mint point releases, and the Mint team would not have enough resources.

    2. It used to be done this way until Linux Mint 17, when they switched to LTS release bases only. I think using the non-LTS releases caused a ton of extra headaches for the Mint team. They are less stable than LTS releases, and with so many changes in such a short time, there was too much to address by release time to allow the Mint team to really do much development work on Cinnamon and other apps they wanted to focus on. Using LTS only, they have more breathing room and time for development and less to have compensate for.

    3. One of my big reasons to love Mint is that we do not have to depend on Ubuntu’s experimental releases between the more stable LTS ones. To see some newer software faster would be nice, but even the Debian upstream is fairly conservative. I would however contribute money to see an Arch-based Mint. That would give you a really bleeding edge (Arch) distro with the sanity of Mint.

  9. Feliz Ano Novo, Clem e Equipe.

Sou um grande fã e apreciador do trabalho de todos vocês. Muito obrigado por todo esforço e dedicação. Vocês são demais.

  10. Grabbing the ISOs from mirrorservice as they have been uploaded there. I have checked the GPG and it’s signed with the official key. They all seem legit 🙂

I’ll add them to my new toy, a Ventoy USB stick.

  11. I couldn’t wait for the official announcement and installed Una.
At the moment everything is going perfect, I have noticed a couple of things. First is that it consumes a little less resources at startup, and that due to the new Cinnamon theme, when installing some applications it is not possible {as it was possible in the old Mint-Y} to choose dark mode. It happened to me with an Appimage and a Flatpak, but nothing to worry about.

    Best regards!

  12. Sorry to ask so many questions, but I would like to clarify:
Linux Mint 21 release will be global, but will there be further design changes? For example, transparency, accent colors, icons, and rounding at the bottom?
Will there be improvements to the menu?
    Will the installer be improved?
Will Kde and Gnome shells come back sometime in the future, or not anymore?
Will menus and applications be centered by default, like in Win 11?

  13. Thanks and happy new year.
I have installed the 20.03 beta; it automatically updates to 20.3 stable, right?
I advise you to remove, among the proposed kernels, version 5.13.0-23, this version is broken and has many problems.
If you can, why don’t you offer kernel versions 5.14 or 5.15? The kernel 5.4 LTS does not support my hardware.
    Thanks

    1. I too can’t use 5.4 and had issues with 5.13.0-23. My solution was to install 5.14 OEM:

      sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d

  14. Hello Clem,
A very happy new year to you all.
you crafted yet another upgrade for betterment.
you seem to be minting Linux indeed!

  15. Happy New Year Everyone To The Linux Mint Team Thank You For Taking your time with this release I Have Been Using Linux Mint For 12 Years Now and Love It
My Mother uses it as well and if she can use it anyone can
Congratulations On Another Rock Solid Release I,m Sure 20.3 Will Be Just As Good Or Better Than previous releases Kudos to the mint team for a job very well done

  16. Happy New Year to the team.
I am using the system for 5 years and I like it a lot and was very satisfied during these years of Mint.
    Keep up the good work.
I wait patiently for the final release and look forward to install it.

  17. I’ve gone all in 20.3 as the beta just updates to “full” once its official. Gaming Asus ROG Ryzen7 with the AMD graphics card (not nVidia) – so nice, recent hardware. The only issue I have encountered seems to be waking from sleep – eliminated the screensaver, it is the power management part that hangs the machine. I just disabled it to “never’ and always use it plugged in. Mint 20.3 is looking super – what a long road we have walked along since Ada, hey?

  18. I just updated. Looks great! I absolutely LOVE finally having a functional calendar applet again! Thank you so much for that feature!

One question: What happened to the ability to customize the speed of the Cinnamon desktop effects? The animations were always a bit too frantic for my taste, so I always slowed them down just a bit. Now they’re frantic again, and I can’t find where to change the animation speed.

  19. One issue I just found: Transparent terminal windows do strange things when there is a window behind it. Instead of showing the window, it looks like it’s only showing something like the shadow gradient behind it. Here’s a screenshot to show what I’m talking about: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1yuoW70zDo2bgterlOaJ3ashWXl_zDnUg/view?usp=sharing

Notice the Nemo window behind the terminal. The part of the window that’s not behind the terminal looks normal. The part that is behind the window just shows gradients near where the window’s edges should be over the desktop background. This did not happen before the update from Linux Mint 20.2 to 20.3. Before that, you could see the window and its contents behind the terminal.

    1. I understand that’s the first time you’ve seen it but it actually isn’t a new problem. It’s been around for quite some time. As far as I’ve seen it only happens with Mint-X. I’ve never been able to figure out why and what triggers it. But it’s happened on my own machines before.

    2. @JosephM – I found a workaround that seems good so far. In the terminal’s Preferences window, I un-checked “Use transparency from system theme”, and checked “Use transparent background” and adjusted the slider to match as closely as possible what the theme showed before. Now I can see the windows behind the terminal properly.

  20. Firefox managed by Mint??? That’s a BIG NO!!! How do I disable this? Linux is about freedom. Or did I not get the memo of a change?

    1. For Mint 20.3 with Ubuntu 20.04 underneath, you can open Synaptic, search Firefox, click on the package, then Menu/Package/Force Version, then in the dropdown, select the Ubuntu version (the 95.0.1 from focal-updates) to choose it as has been until now. Actually, Mint’s change is a big “yes” because Ubuntu moves Firefox to Snap so that Mint needs to do something. With Chromium, that was the same problem – which Mint solved by building Chromium themselves.

    2. Just out of curiosity: Why is Firefox managed by Mint a problem, when Firefox managed by Ubuntu was not?

  21. While messing around with the Welcome Screen, I tried to change the theme under First Steps as a test. Changing to a dark theme works. Changing BACK to a light theme doesn’t. Changing the theme under the Menu > Preferences > Themes only partially works. The Update Manager is still dark.

  22. Thank you Clem and the Linux Mint team for an awesome Linux Mint version 20.3! I was very pleasantly surprised to see how well the Mint-Y-Dark theme blends with the GNOME desktop dark theme design. Again, a great job by all who contributed to Linux Mint 20.3!

  23. Absolutely love the new release, particularly the stylistic changes in cinnamon. Love the stability and functionality you provide and am forever grateful. Dropped a donation recognizing the hard work being done.

  24. Just updated, everything seems to work fine. Kudos for Mint team. Keep on with good job everyone, all the best in 2022.

  25. Hi. Happy New Year.
I.ve got an issue on Calendar Applet. I upgraded from Uma and then I tried to write a date on Calendar applet. The the calendar appeared and I wrote it and saved it. It was shows perfect in the applet. All worked fine, but when I tried to clean it from Caendar it was impossible to me. I did some tries and at the end it dissapeared from calendar, but now i have got the date in the applet, not dissapeared, and all the days from the one I wrote the date to the end of the month (even the days of the next month that apper in grey) all with a little dot under the number of the day (no date appears in any of then but just in the day I wrote it; just the little dot under them).
    Salutes and Happy New Year.

  26. Got updated to 20.3 although no blog post is yet published.

As usual very smooth and without any issues.

Like the new design fine-tuning, Mint keeps getting better! Thank you team!

  27. Hello Clem and Whole MINT Team, Thank You so much for a 100% perfect upgrade to 20.3 today. The upgrade was very fast, very smooth (not a single glitch or error message) and the end result fantastic. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate MINT and all your hard work. Una is something you can justly be very proud of. A real achievement. Well done everyone at mint.

  28. Kernel 5.13.0-22 on ASUS TUF FX505DY-WH51 Laptop(Ryzen 5 3550H/Vega 8 Integrated graphics and Radeon RX560X(Polaris) Discrete mobile GPU)

    ubuntu-drivers-common (1:0.9.0~0.20.04.4) focal; urgency=medium

    [ Jeremy Szu ]
    * ubiquity/target-config/31ubuntu_driver_packages:
    – Install nvidia-prime in eariler stage (LP: #1943816).

This update does the same thing that Kernel 5.13.0-23 does to the laptop and I’m using Linux Mint 20.1 currently and once again after the “ubuntu-drivers-common (1:0.9.0~0.20.04.4) focal” update the Laptop is not getting into cinnamon desktop or even past bootup.
