System requirements:

  • 2GB RAM (4GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
  • 20GB of disk space (100GB recommended).
  • 1024×768 resolution (on lower resolutions, press ALT to drag windows with the mouse if they don’t fit in the screen).

Upgrade instructions:

  • This BETA release might contain critical bugs, please only use it for testing purposes and to help the Linux Mint team fix issues prior to the stable release.
  • It will be possible to upgrade from this BETA to the stable release.
  • It will also be possible to upgrade from Linux Mint 20, 20.1 and 20.2.
  • Upgrade instructions will be published after the stable release of Linux Mint 20.3.

Bug reports:

  • Bugs in this release should be reported on Github at https://github.com/linuxmint/mint20.3-beta.
  • Create one issue per bug.
  • As described in the Linux Mint Troubleshooting Guide, do not report or create issues for observations.
  • Be as accurate as possible and include any information that might help developers reproduce the issue or understand the cause of the issue:
    • Bugs we can reproduce, or which cause we understand are usually fixed very easily.
    • It is important to mention whether a bug happens “always”, or “sometimes”, and what triggers it.
    • If a bug happens but didn’t happen before, or doesn’t happen in another distribution, or doesn’t happen in a different environment, please mention it and try to pinpoint the differences at play.
    • If we can’t reproduce a particular bug and we don’t understand its cause, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to fix it.
  • The BETA phase is literally a bug squashing rush, where the team is extremely busy and developers try to fix as many bugs as fast as possible.
  • There usually are a huge number of reports and very little time to answer everyone or explain why a particular report is not considered a bug, or won’t get fixed. Don’t let this frustrate you, whether it’s acknowledged or not, we appreciate everyone’s help.
  • Please visit https://trello.com/b/ic24nOX4/linux-mint-203 and https://github.com/linuxmint/mint20.3-beta to follow the progress of the development team between the BETA and the stable release.

  1. I really appreciate each and every release of LinuxMint, even the BETAS. I do my bit to encourage Linux adoption with monthly remote meetings. My preference is the MATE versions, although I try to fit newcomer use cases to the more fitting version. With the new website design I have been coming back to the blog items more and more. The FAQ section in the “Linux Mint Troubleshooting Guide” told me a better way to make feature requests, and that is where I will be going. I have feature suggestions that will be better placed that way. Thanks for such the 3 excellent Linux ISOs for those new to Linux.

  2. Is it just me or is this pre-realise slower?
Also problems continue to exist with BT/WLAn combos (ie RTL8129ce), flaky speeds, dc from BT mouse etc…HP, Öenovo.
No way to hide mounted bitlocker folder? Ubuntu Mate does 🙁
Kernel 5.13 starts off keyboard lights low … Lenovo
    slower shutdown procedure again?

    Boah

  3. What is the state of desktop acceleration in Mint 20.3 MATE? When I last tried it, compton was not being developed anymore for a long time (by the way, there seems to be an active fork called “picom”), had serious issues (glitches and lags in games etc.) on my AMD gpu and the integrated MATE compositor supported only a software acceleration, caused slowdown in games, did not prevent tearing and had other problems.

    1. I see that the compton package actually ships picom since Ubuntu 21.04 (and contains a deprecation message recommending users to switch to the picom package instead). Maybe it could be a good idea to backport this package (or the picom one) into Mint 20.3 (and make sure it works with MATE)? 🙂

    2. does your media on mpv/other glitch and lag too? i have the same setup. tearing if we use other window managers. you thought of changing your gpu on mint mate?

  4. One of the postponed items is: “look into Appimage and its support”. I would love to see this, as I prefer Appimages to Flatpak. Snaps are way down my preference list.

  6. Is it possible to boot and install with kernel 5.11 as an option as in Ubuntu latest LTS 20.4.3 from Live?
5.4 just doesn’t support my laptop on boot and I’m running Mate 20.10, been looking forward to Mint catching up.
And installing a newer kernel post install isn’t an option, my Legion 5 literally won’t boot with a kernel older than 5.10

  7. I see an issue with MATE 20.3 regarding Update Manager only when using Compiz.
Open UM and Refresh. With the updates shown close out the the UM window.
The UM panel icon is no longer clickable (right-click still works though)

  8. Cannot find fault. I updated two systems (Via Terminal – because I can). I am aware it is not the recommended approach, however, both computers upgraded perfectly, without issues. I will not update my own system, as the information is too valuable (to me) to risk losses. The update manager had a lot of “updates”, I accepted all the recommendations – “System Monitor” does not show “beta” on the release version. Maybe it did – I did not check before I updated everything OR maybe it has gone to stable already?? I do know beta releases on mint, generally, do update to stable automatically. Sincere thank you (¯`·.·´¯) *Mint Team* (¯`·.·´¯) for all your hard work.

  9. I can’t get GSmartControl to run in live or installed. After starting it terminates while scanning for drives. It runs fine (live or installed) in 20.2.

  10. Not a fan of the rounded titlebars. They look very 15-years-ago. Can you call that theme Mint-Z or something so people who would prefer to keep the current Mint-Y can still have it?

  11. It seems that the displays power management can not be disabled (with the GUI). Can anyone confirm this? I have already posted the problem on github (issue #75, with steps to reproduce), but there was no response till now. Does this mean that no one could reproduce it or that there were no objections and will be fixed?
