Monthly News – December 2017

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!

The year is almost over, our latest release is out, all the work we’ve done has been delivered and this holiday season is an opportunity to take a little break to contemplate and enjoy where we are and what we have, before 2018 starts with a new development cycle, new ambitions and two important targets on the horizon: Linux Mint 19 and LMDE 3.

I’d like to thank you for your support, for your help and for your feedback. 2017 was a lot of fun. See you all next year for more! 🙂

Installation Guide

The Linux Mint Installation Guide is now available in English, Bulgarian, Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, Danish, French, German, Interlingua, Italian and Turkish.

It will soon also become available in Croatian, Dutch, Greek, Korean, Lithuanian, Spanish and Swedish.

Many thanks to all the people involved in translating it.

Donations and sponsorships

We’re late in processing December donations and sponsorships and we’ve built a bit of a backlog.

Please accept our apologies. We’ll process these and catch up with the backlog as soon as possible.

    1. There was a vote in the forum and the majority voted that mascots are dumb, so hopefully the answer is no.

  1. Well done Clem on another very successful year for Linux Mint. I’ve just installed 18.3 on my new Christmas PC and it’s all looking good so far. I’m very excited about Mint 19, since the base of 18.x is now starting to show its age a little. 2018 will indeed be another great year for Mint, we can be sure….

  2. Happy holidays to all the mint team, support groups, mint users and supporters and followers of this great distro. Looking forward to the New Year so we can kick some more U know what. Take care everyone and be careful out there. Merci

  3. QUESTION.? IS PAYPAL BLOCKING DONATIONS WITH CREDIT/DEBIT CARD, I TRY 4 TIMES TODAY AND PAYPAL DONT LET MAKE, CANCEL EVERY TIME, IN THE PAST I WAS MAKE DONATIONS WITH MY DEBIT CARD, BUT NOW LOOKS LIKE PAYPAL DONT LET GO.

    1. @Roberto
First have your bank cancel your Debit Card and issue a new one.
PayPal is not worthy of trust.
      (former Sponsor and Donor)

    2. I have had several conversations over the years with Mint about not contributing because of their use of what a many people consider to be a less-than-reputable money-handling, funds-transfer organization.
The reasons given–by Mint–always boil down to one, and not much else, in this world market where there exist many better alternatives: it’s Mint’s choice.
…Just as it’s my choice to NOT use PayPal.

  4. Awesome work guys. All my 3 pc who were running windows 10 are now running Linux Mint 🙂 I’m not mastering it all but I’m reading and learning every day 🙂 Thanks to you all

  5. Good job. But I note that the Italian version of cinnamon 3.6.7 still has errors. The end of session popup still brings ‘Cancel’ instead of ‘Annulla’, ‘Estrai Qui’ instead of ‘Estrai qui’. I hope you want to correct as soon as possible.

    1. Developers always use women names for their distros. I think it will be Mint Tatjana or Mint Tinara. I don`t like name Theresa.

  6. Thanks for creating the best distro out there. 🙂

Could you guys start updating the RSS feed again? It hasn’t received any news since October. Thanks!

    1. Arthur you should try another feed reader. It is the only reasonable way to read these hateful WordPress forums. I refuse to scroll scroll scroll thru them hunting for content.
Linux Mint: are you listening? I appreciate your efforts, but this is a clear Fail. Thanks.

  7. Best wishes for the new year to all the Mint team and thanks again for a great OS. LM 18.3 has been rock solid since update without a single hiccup since. Very impressed and happy with it.

I see names for 19 are being thrown into the hat so can I profer ‘Tawnia’ as a contender. An Irish name meaning ‘green field’, those with the name being described as…

‘dynamic, visionary and versatile, able to make constructive use of freedom. They tend to be optimistic, energetic, intelligent, and to make friends easily..

Not a bad fit methinks 🙂

  8. Merci pour le travail incroyable autour de la meilleure distribution Linux. Je suis anxieux de voir la version 19! Joyeuses fête à tous et à toutes!

  9. Software Manager suggestion: 🙂
Can you add Download % with it showing download speed and Installation % functionality to Software Manager? Currently when you click install, it just shows installing and nothing else, we have no way to know anything in details.

  10. From a semi-noob: Why does Psensor or ‘watch sensors’ turn my laptop into a slow motion car wreck, can someone PLEASE help me with this problem 🙂

  11. Thanks for Linux Mint 18.3 XFCE! I have already finished translating the Linux Mint Installation Guide into Ukrainian. Publish please.

  12. Now that Linux gaming is a thing. There should be an option to install the latest bleeding edge graphics card drivers in the driver manager.

  13. hi together

has anyone tested brasero and so on?? I did and I still face the annyoing problem that a referred to in an earlier Blog-news hier in Mintblogs. Brasero and the other burners stopped working for me. They ejact disc without even having burned. And this problem is going on since 2009 already without having properly resolved since then.

Can anybody do something about this?? Because I would really need that for burning audio- and videofiles.

    Greetings

    1. Brasero stopped working for me also.

You say that you have tried “other burners” — have you tried k3b also? I changed to k3b and am very pleased with it.

  14. And to add:

installing brasero-cdrdao does not resolve it for me and also for others. Any idea??
And as I already told before: in Terminal it strangely seems to work, but not on the normal way.
    So why is that??

    1. Happy new year Andrea,

You mention “installing brasero-cdrdao does not resolve it for me…”, Typo? Installing brasero-cdrkit should prevent disc ejections prior to burning.

      # Terminal (or install using Software Manager)
      apt install brasero-cdrkit

Restart the system, then test again.

    1. Hi,
As Mozilla Corporation is not acting ethically recently (Mozilla is Not Trustworthy – youtube) I’ve started to use WF recently on my laptop and found it as a really good replacement for FF. I’m linux newbie, so could you please let me know what are the benefits of adding repository, instead of just downloading WF from official site (archive)?

    2. Thanks for info. I hope some day, will be able to find Waterfox in software manager 🙂

  15. Don’t know if this is the right place to ask but why Mint uses kernels 4.8 /4.10 and so on while only kernels 4.9 /4.14 and so on are patched for the Meltdown vulnerability? What is the difference in kernel series and when Mint expects kernel updates?

    1. Hi,

Updates aren’t available yet. For Linux Mint, which is based on Ubuntu Trusty and Xenial, please keep an eye on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/KnowledgeBase/SpectreAndMeltdown. For LMDE, which is based on Debian Jessie: https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2017-5754. We’ll make announcements and vulgarize the situation to make sure everyone understands what’s going on and what updates to apply as soon as patches will be available.

    2. Thanks for the info. Ubuntu plans updates at the official disclosure date. Panic: disclosure comes earlier then expected! Even Windows 10 has an update already and in the Linux kernel archives patches for LTS kernels are available since yesterday. Makes me wonder if Ubuntu based distro’s are less safe then lets say Debian based distro’s… What about LMDE? Does it get security updates faster?

    3. Another question: Canonical says only 64 bit kernels will be patched. Does it mean all 32 bit Ubuntu based systems like Mint stay at risk? Should I upgrade my Mint 17.3 32 bit to 18.3 64 bit?

  16. I absolutely love LM XFCE! Thank you for such an incredible OS. I apologize if this is not the place to post the following though it seemed like it. Researching tips and tricks online and came across this little tidbit….

    From betanews.com

Linux Mint 18.3 Ubuntu-based operating system is named ‘Sylvia’

    By Brian Fagioli

“Ubuntu 17.10 is almost here, and many Linux users are excited. Canonical’s operating system is already excellent, but it will soon be even better thanks to a new default desktop environment — GNOME. What this means for the Ubuntu-based Linux Mint’s usage remains to be seen. You see, many people choose Mint because they do not like the Unity DE. Now that Ubuntu has ditched Unity, the reasons to opt for a distro based on Ubuntu rather than using “The Real McCoy” are dwindling.”

Curious as to where this puts LM and any changes we may have to get use to.

    1. @David Helms I reckon nothing will change. Unity and GNOME are both non-traditional desktop environments whereas Cinnamon is. Users who intentionally opted in to use a traditional desktop like Cinnamon will not switch back to GNOME.

  17. @ all of you who always have suggestions or try to guess the next Mint version’s name, it should be in Wikipedia, look it up as a subsection of the Linux Mint entry.

@guidgen? I have no idea about how ETHICAL Mozilla is, I only know that Firefox works a lot better in Mint. The current upgrade to 57 is once again as bad as 57.0 was originally for Windows (7 in my case, I stopped there and would use 8.1 if I absolutely had to). I had whatever version came with 32-bit Maya Cinnamon on a hard drive I inherited before I loaded 18.1 on a driveless computer I bought and I’ve tried and uninstalled FF on my Win 7 machines a couple times and it seems a crapshoot there. YMMV

  18. Just downloaded and installed Mint on my laptop. So far seems like an awesome operating system. Can’t wait to get involved in the community.
