News
The Cinnamon and MATE editions of Linux Mint 18 will be announced this week. They successfully passed QA (quality testing) yesterday and they’re on their way towards a stable release.
I’d like to thank all the people who participated in testing the BETA. Your feedback helped us a lot: 1229 comments were processed, 64 bugs were fixed, boot speed was improved and new ideas were gathered for Linux Mint 18.1.
Many thanks also to all the people who fund Linux Mint. We received 419 donations in May. Your help is very important to us and we’ve very proud to have your support.
Finally I’d like to thank the development team for their efforts both during the cycle and the BETA phase, and the moderation team for their diligence on the forums and the IRC.
I hope you’ll have a great time with Linux Mint 18, see you after the release 🙂

PS: In July, we’ll be focusing on the upgrade path from Linux Mint 17.3 as well as the Xfce and Plasma desktops. We’ll have more news about these after the release.
For Clem and other testers regarding LM18 Cinnamon version:
I discovered that after choosing Windows borders other than default Mint-X options (on Themes/Windows borders) the following 3 applications (Calculator and Disks from Accessories) and Simple Scan (from Graphics) do not change their windows borders according to the new chosen option (they remain unchanged into Mint-X).
I checked this bug on 2 cases, one in a LM18 virtual machine and the other as live CD.
This doesn’t happen in Mint 17.3 Rosa.
All other features seems to be OK.
Congratulations mint team keep up the good work eagerly waiting for long
Great work! I’ll wait to get the upgrade from 17.3 Mate to 18 thru Update Manager…
Hi,
and what about AMD/ATI /Radeon graphics with Mint 18? Are they working? The problem was solve?
Tks!
Hi Guys, Just wondering – Linuxmint 18 is on the heanet mirror can you confirm this is a legit upload considering the past incident?
with the most current updated Mint 18 beta (Cinnamon edition) Mint is no longer starting at all on a Thinkpad W520.
install with the original beta image was fine. the update 2 days ago broke boot. ‘recovery mode’ doesn’t boot either.
updating the live-image on the USB-stick gets the same result: live-image does not boot anymore. the system gets to a blinking text-cursor in the upper left corner and after 30 secs. the fan starts to operate at maximun speed. I tried to wait but for >15 minutes at least nothing changes. reset is impossible, I have to shutdown hard.
the same machine boots fine with both 17.3 and the original 18 beta.
Clem, is this ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/stable/18/linuxmint-18-mate-64bit.iso the final release?
I’m very excited to install Linux Mint 18 MATE edition!
Can’t wait! Love you Clem!!
Having personally reverted to 32bit LM17.3 MATE plus LMDE2 MATE that’s great news although I don’t envy all the hard ‘team work’ involved in reconciling all those comments.
Meanwhile, looking forward to the formal release of LM18, installed BrucesWay on a USB3.0 device. LinuxMint Rules indeed!
Sounds great, thanks a lot! Will the KDE edition be using Plasma 5? If so, how would this affect an upgrade path from 17.x?
Thanks again Clem, and the whole team – keeping machines free and minty fresh ^_^b
“They’re on their way towards a stable release.” I’m a little confused, since I was able to download Linux Mint 18 Cinnamom already yesterday from one of your servers. http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com//stable/
Hi
First, congrats on your work, I’ve been using Mint for the past two years and I love it 🙂
Just a quick question, will the Xfce (respectively Plasma) desktop also include the Mint-Y Light, Darker & Dark themes? I’m looking forward to having these around.
Can’t wait till I get my hands on Sarah 😛
I am using Mint 18 Cinnamon as a deployed server in a remote Alaska location running web, e-mail, ftp, cloud storage and an IRC server. It runs well with all of those on it and updates come through just fine even when accessed remotely. Still need to figure out how to configure the box to switch over to the telephone line as a fallback for a data connection but that is minor. Keep up the good work and your operating system does a fine job as a server!

i install the beta version can upgrade to stable without reisntall all again?
I was amazed at how well everything worked, even with the initial beta release … faster & better overall than ubuntu 16.04 final release. Keep up the good work!!
Great job Mint Team. I am using Cinnamon DE. I will wait for the upgrade from Mint 17.3 to Mint 18.
Awasome 18th Version of Linux Mint,
since some years ago, i like Mint much than others, and this time is not exception, its look awasome.
Congratulations Linux Mint Team.
I hope at any time his team surprices the users with a Mint-Server Edition.
Thank You Very Much.
To Cristian M:
The titlebars do not change on these Applications as since 14.04, the apps have now got what’s known as GTK Headerbars on them which is where the whole GTK theme effects the window buttons and also lets you put the buttons in the same toolbar as those window buttons too.
(You’d have to change the GTK theme to see any difference)
After watching about 55 to 65 videos on YouTube about Linux Mint 17 series success, and Linux Mint 18 BETA version’s (considered being almost stable) reviews. I quit Ubuntu 16.04 for this release. Good job! Linux Mint Team.
*I really appreciate your work!*
Great work! I can’t wait to install it

I am Indonesian and want to donate, but I have no credit card. If you can provide bank transfer method from my country (or debit card), it would be easy for us. Anyway, great job guys! I hate windows because of L Mint!
EDIT, I’ll try to use paypal for donation!
You all are amazing. I’ve been test-driving the beta, which seems itself very stable. Thanks for your great work.
Been using Mint since 2008. Major issue with Mint 18.. Only tried Cinnamon so far.. Both cpu’s on 92-100% at all times even when doing nothing.. I installed it and was concerned because even the login screen was responding super slow and typing password etc.. But I knew what was up.. I opened up sys mon and “Cinnamon” is using 85% cpu (in both hardware and software modes).. I went into effects and disabled them all but still no difference.
I run Ubuntu 16.04 on this same machine without issue.
Anybody else getting this?
Will Mint 18 out of the box have the driver software for the AMD RX 400 series like the 480 that was just released?
Will the 32 bit version not work with UEFI and require BIOS?
And what about systems with a 64 bit CPU and a 32 bit UEFI?
hi,i hope mint can be donated through weixin or taobao .
and i wanna say thanks to all of donators. thank you all ~
After taking a brief look at Cinnamon 18, what I thought would be a pretty ordinary look appeared quite the opposite: it is very attractive and manages to avoid some of the flat and dull appearance of other Linux flavours. That said, I look forward to the Plasma desktop.
Regardless, Mint is a superb OS, and a real credit to all involved. After a couple of years using Mint, I still am delighted with so many aspects of it. I look forward to using it for many years to come.
I’ve been using Mint Cinnamon 17.3 for the last couple of months as well as Ubuntu Mate 16.04 more recently. I liked them both but I really love Mint Cinnamon 18 Beta after just using it for a few days. The install was easy and the result is impressively stable. I know what OS I will be using from this point on! Well done Mint team!!!
@Reynaldo Lulli: That’s a known Ubuntu 16.04 problem. Have a look here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lsb/+bug/1536353
I’m using Mint 18 since the beta release as my main system. It’s the best Linux I ever had.
Great job guys, MATE 64 bit version installs from YUMI multi-boot memory stick with no problems, did a complete setup for daily use, no problems whatsoever. Looking forward to the stable release.
hi 24 Reynaldo Lulli
There I can help you. You go here:
https://packages.debian.org/search?suite=sid&keywords=lsb
download these packages for your architecture. Then install these packages first. And then in the second step, install printer drivers for Epson TX135.
That’s just it.
Greetings
Mintkatze
hi Clen . can you confirm that the lm18 on the heanet is real ?
@ #24 ofb (June 29th, 2016 at 8:29 pm)
on “GPG SIGNATURE HEADS UP”
It’s another GPG key “Linux Mint Repository Signing Key”
Key fingerprint = 302F 0738 F465 C153 5761 F965 A661 6109 451B BBF2
Just do
$ gpg –recv-key 451BBBF2
Probably we should wait until the linuxmint verify page will be updated after official announcement.
Hi,
just one question (maybe foolish): does mint 18 come with systemd?
I couldn’t find a word about it, but if it’s based on 16.04, I would suggest yes.
Thanks a lot for your Work
Kare
Just installed the 18 on my brand new Dell XPS 13 with SSD HD 🙂
Initially I had an error during install saying it couldn’t install Grub. Re_installing went just fine. Screen flickering appears when you switch off blue tooth…
Wifi is fine, but had to switch off & on again after 1st connection attempt. Is stable since.
Booting into the logon screen in 25 secs, not bad! 🙂
Thanks a M€ Clem & team
Saw the post of the Sarah Betas. I’ve been using Xfce almost-kinda-forever but I thought I’d give Cinnamon a bash (lol) while I waited for the X and see what this C was all about. Awesome. Best beta I’ve ever, ever had the fortune of using. I guess I’m now Cinnamon flavored. Well done Mint Team!
As always, thanks for all the hard work that goes into Mint!
@Clem: I’m thinking about switching to LMDE. Is it still receiving updates? Are you working on new LMDE versions?
Edit by Clem: We’re not working on a new version right now, but yes it’s still receiving updates. It received the Xapps, MATE 1.14 and Cinnamon 3.0 before Mint 18 did and we’re planning to give it most of the updates on Mint tools that went into the 18 release.

I can confirm this in Sarah MATE, except for Simple Scan, that follows the settings I have chosen. Maybe that was already corrected.
I currently run Sarah MATE in Virtual Box, no other issues to report for now.
Cheers, Peter
Screen flickering still happening, saw the earlier post about turning off bluetooth. I have turned it back on, will report the results after a couple days. Why would turning off Bluetooth cause the screen to flicker?
Seems having the bluetooth on or off doesnt help. Still getting screen flickering. Probably a driver issue. Need help.
is the release of SARAH MATE 18 Beta or the final version
