  1. Note: The Xfce release should follow shortly in the coming days, and then an update to mintupdate which enables the upgrade path from 17 to 17.1 for both editions.

  2. Thank you for this update Clem. I’m downloading both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions (for work and home, respectively). I’ll be eagerly awaiting for the Xfce edition.

    Best regards,
    Ed.

  3. i do install Rebecca 17.1 KDE but i didn’t find my favorite desktop application ( search and launch) it so go back to Maya :'(

  4. I have been pleasantly surprised at how smoothly and efficiently KDE runs on my low end quad-core Acer Aspire.
    Great release!

  5. Mint KDE is the best! I’ve tried a lot of different distros and desktops, but Mint KDE (or Cinnamon) is the best, IMO.

Thanks, Clem and the rest of the Mint team!

  6. Any plans on utilizing KDE Plasma 5? in 17.2 or 18?

Edit by Clem: It’s too soon to say, it really depends on how fast it improves and how stable it gets. What I can say is that we’re keeping an eye on it and reviewing it for every cycle.

  7. @Justin

I hope damn not, I definitely prefer a DE that is both more stable and has more features than the inferior newer one.

  8. Linux Mint KDE edition is simply the very best linux distribution, second place is Linux Mint cinnamon edition. Thanks to all Linux Mint team, greetings to all from México.

  9. I hope the issue with the ‘disappearing shutdown applet’ is fixed in 17.1 For the past two months my Mint 17 KDE system would not shut down when I clicked on the shutdown applet, the shutdown never launched. It came back two or three times and went away again. Right now it is working, but I have now idea why this has been happening. (Had to shutdown via Xterm with “sudo shutdown -h now”).

  10. The new Breeze artwork concept introduces cleaner visuals, all Mint flavors NEED a new concept design inspired by material design, flat design, following the trend. I like Menda icons.

  11. Thank you for this release, even if I am a cinnamon fan!
I would like very much to see your software get off the Ubuntu train and be based on the Debian.
Also I am waiting full adoption of systemd

  12. ken, startup and shutdown issues are the most consistent problem I’ve had with Mint throughout my years of using it (15 and 17 ).

15 and 17 MATE had an issue with every 2nd shutdown or so causing the window manager to revert to a basic theme and then not shutting down (might have had something to do with compiz override).

Where as 17 KDE would sometimes hang after logging in, which you could tell when it was going to happen as the startup log would start overriding the splash screen before getting to the login screen.

I eventually got it running smooth with 17 KDE and updating to the latest 3.13 kernel revision. Though I have to ask WHY on earth kernel revisions aren’t updated to latest by default, given all the security concerns as of late.

I am glad it got me to switch to KDE though, I was pleasantly surprised with how much its progressed, the KWin compositor is incredibly solid with the latest nvidia drivers and a few vsync tweaks, works smoother than the Windows compositor even (with lots of windows + multi-monitor).

  13. Hello Team. How are you getting on with LMDE? I use it for all my personal and business work. I hope you continue to support it!

  14. Hi, how do I update Mint KDE 17 to 17.1? MintUpdate installed 4.8.0 but no option.

Edit by Clem: Hi, this was tested yesterday and should open up this week-end with version 4.8.1.

  15. I’ve been so blown away by the MATE 17.1 release that I haven’t even played much with Cinnamon, much less KDE or XFCE. Beautiful Compiz, as god intended. The only thing I miss from the last Cinnamon release is the shuffling of desktops. But the clean and easy compiz transitions are worth it. I’ve been installing Mate from San Diego to Alaska. So far, everyone’s a fan!!

  16. Go to ‘/etc/apt/sources.list’ and right-click as ROOT then select ‘open as text’. Then copy-and-paste the two lines below onto the empty line.

    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/unstable/ubuntu trusty main
    deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/unstable/ubuntu trusty main

    Then click ‘save’.

Now open the Terminal as Root and copy-and-paste the following commands one at a time, then hit ‘Enter’:

    gpg –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv-keys 91E7EE5E
    gpg –export –armor 91E7EE5E | sudo apt-key add –
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install kodi kodi-bin

Voila! – you have now installed Kodi 14 Helix on Linux Mint 17.1

  17. Clem
I had addiction with Win System, like to jump start on Linux System
please make the co-booting with damn Window system more user friendly, I may dump the Win7 & Win8 totally.
Also I need terminal command manual, pls point me to the docs.
Thanks for launching the new version Rebecca.
    Best Regards
    Rubi

  18. I am still waiting for MintUpdate 4.8.1, so that I can update from KDE-17. I hope the samba shares on attached IP-Harddisk does then work like in MATE-Edition …

  19. @Rubi

Stay with Windows, dude. If finding a tutorials for using terminal in a search engine is too difficult for you, linux is way out of your league.

  20. @Rubi Tuesday

Hi, it should work pretty easy.
    1. You only have to resize your HDD first (Live boot – gparted)
    – then, create at least 3 partitions (/(root), /home, Linux-swap)
    – or use free space and let installer decide

    2. you have to point your boor loader to efi partition (if you use efi)

It worked for me with Win8.1 preistalled on notebook an Linux Mint 17 KDE install.

  21. How MDM KWallet Integration works?

    Can I set it manually?

I deleted all my previous wallets, but after login, no new wallet was created. If I define a new one, this wallet will not be open after login.

I wanted use it for autologin with KDE Telepathy.

  22. I have completely reformatted my hard drive (several times) using both K-Partition and G-Parted (following recommended partition requirements for Linux Mint 17.1) and I keep getting ‘Invalid protocol’ errors when trying to search using the ‘Find’ feature in Dolphin. Is there a bug in the final build of Linux Mint 17.1 KDE 64? I even verified the MD5 of the ISO image that I downloaded.

Would the Linux Mint Gods kindly address this frustrating issue.

  23. Obrigado, estou esperando a versão com o KDE Plasma 5, espero que a equipe do Linux Mint adicionem mais recursos

    ——–

Thank you, I’m waiting for the version with KDE Plasma 5, I hope that the Linux Mint team to add more features

  24. Where do you set up multiple desktops in Mint 17 KDE? I see no option available in System Settings

Edit by Clem: System Settings -> Workspaces Behavior -> Virtual Desktops, increase the number there and define shortcuts in the switching tab.

  25. Thanks guys! I finally got around to installing this today and it’s totally sweet. I’ve always loved how much smoother Mint KDE runs than Kubuntu. Keep up the great work!

@42. David: Right-click on your desktop and select “Folder Options.” You’ll see the thing on there to change your desktop background.

  26. Congratulations!
Does this release have openSSH server on and listening by default? That was a serious security mistake in some earlier versions
    Best Regards
    Sergei

Edit by Clem: No, this was fixed a few releases ago.

  27. I’m waiting for LMDE’s KDE Version. Will it happen?

Edit by Clem: No, we already maintain 2 distributions for a total of 6 different editions.

  28. In that same dialog box, you can hit the thing next to “Layout” that says “Folder” and select “Default Desktop” from the drop-down menu. Then it will say “Default Desktop Settings” on the right click menu.

As for why it’s set up for Folder instead of Default Desktop, that’s so that the Mint team could include that nifty installation shortcut on the desktop for the Live CD. Alternately, it’s useful for users who like to put icons on their desktop.

  29. Hi

I really like your KDE edition it’s excellent for beginners but do you know of any tutorials for setting up servers such as local Network, email server with postfix… etc

    Thanks

  30. Hi Folks 🙂

KDE version is really a stunningly cool build, but there’s one rather odd issue with LibreOffice. When opening a .doc file held on the local machine, it all works perfectly, but when opening the same .doc when it’s held on a server (in my case, a Qnap TS-453 on the LAN, accessed by a Dolphin shortcut to smb://hostname/ from my HP Elitebook 8440p connected via 802.11n) LibreWord opens, but ‘remains minimised’ (to use a Windows term). In other words, you see the ‘LibreOffice Writer 4.3’ tab on the bottom panel, but when clicked upon, it can’t be restored to show on the main part of the screen, then it closes about 30 seconds later (presumably crashes). This also happened in KDE LM17 (I tried removing and reinstalling LibreOffice, but no difference) and the 17.1 update has not fixed it.

Temporary workaround achieved by installing MS Word 2007 under Wine, but I’m just wondering if anyone else has spotted this issue (or is it just me)? The previous version of Mint I ran was Maya Mate build (which worked fine).

Anyhow, thanks to the team for an excellent build; I love it! 🙂

    Bri 🙂

  31. I installed LinuxMint 17.1 KDE on my HP netbook – “HP Mini 311-1025NR”. Alas, I cannot get the wireless (WiFi) to work. It works fine on my Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11 partitions. Sad.

  32. @52. Briain: Similar thing happened to me too, I was trying to open a remote .csv file with LibreOffice Calc, same symptoms.

  33. I’ve updated to 17.1 two times (KDE).
Every time I got a message with segfault of an alert system. After that the system was been successfully updated.
With the new recommended core samba stop working after a few hours. I couldn’t fix that. I restarted samba process, restarted the laptop (HP Pavilion G6) – no effect.
After that I couldn’t connect to samba mounted device:

    mount error(5): Input/output error
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)

Yesterday, I back to the 17th version (clean install).
Now I use the 3.13.0-24 core. Works fine.

    What have I done wrong?
    Thanks.

  34. Hi

I was just thinking about post 52 (my post) and post 54 from Māris and something sprung to mind (at this stage just a wild guess; I’ll hopefully get time to try experimenting with it, maybe over the weekend):

I’ve just remembered that after accessing network shares (via smb://hostname, then opening the share ‘folders’), the other versions of Mint that I have tried, mounted network shares as folders on the desktop (when done, you could then right click and elect to un-mount them) whereas the LM 17 KDE version doesn’t do so. I’m thus wondering if we have to physically set LM 17 KDE to mount each share (e.g. set it to happen automatically at start up) such that they are already mounted for when we need to open LibreOffice documents on them? Could that be what’s causing this odd issue with LibreOffice?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s just a wild guess, at this point; please don’t confuse me with someone who actually knows what they are talking about! 🙂

    Bri

  35. Linux Mint 17.1 KDE fails to retain wallpaper custom folders. This is an error that has been posted about alot according to google for kde 4.11+ How does something obvious like that get through QA?

Edit by Clem: Is this a rhetorical question? That’s typically something that would be detected not during QA but during the RC process. If you reported it when you tested the RC (I’m assuming you did here) this would have been on our roadmap prior to the stable release. In any case, better late than never, please link us to a bug report or more information/details on that bug.

  36. Great job guys, congratulations! I was afraid of all my plasma customizations could go away after upgrading. Everything worked fine.

I didn’t upgrade to recommended kernel. Will I have problems?

    Edit by Clem: No.

  37. inject openDNS fixed ?

Edit by Clem: Yes, although “fixed” is quite subjective. For a couple of releases now, in reaction to both constructive feedback and controversy, no DNS service is set by default. In other words the OS will use the DNS servers set by your network admin (if any), or fail to resolve domain names.

  38. I found only one issue with new core (for post 59) – mount error for samba mounted drives.
    I get this message:

    mount error(5): Input/output error
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)

It might be specific for my hardware (but I didn’t notice such differents before), however everything works fine with old core.
I’ve already posted this to bug tracker with syslog messages.

  39. Since today I couldn’t open Software Manager (as no-root).
As usually I enter root password but no effect.
The I run the executed command:

kdesudo -i /usr/share/icons/hicolors/48×48/apps/software-properties-mint.png -d –comment “Please enter your password to start the software manager” mintinstall

    And got this:

Bus::open: Can not get ibus-daemon’s address.
    IBusInputContext::createInputContext: no connection to ibus-daemon

    How can this be fixed?
    Sorry, I am a beginner.

Edit by Clem: Are you using ibus? Check this link for answers http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25109770/python-qt-ibus-error-messages

  40. According post 62.
Last installed packages were qcreator and qt-sdk using the Software Manager. I didn’t changed any settings.
Next days I wasn’t able to launch the Software Manager.

Removing of qtcreator and qt-sdk didn’t fixed this.
Also changing imput metod in interface tab in qtconfig-qt4 didn’t help.
