  1. Thank you. We waited some time but it was worth the wait.
As far as I can see now, it is running beautifully and I see no problems so far.

  2. Downloaded it last night. Tried to install it this morning.

The install screen is smaller than a post card. Not good for a person with not so good eyes.
And people is that thing slow. It took ten minutes to get the right time zone.
It took five minutes to get the right keyboard layout.
It took twenty minutes to show the partitions. And I cancelled the installation after it tried twenty and five minutes to format a 10 GiB partition and didn’t came to an end.
This errors (on a smaller degree) where also in the RC 1 of the 32 bit KDE. I had thought they were history now. But it looks as if they got much bigger now.

So it isn’t of use for me. Looks like it’s better to stick to the main x64. :-(((

  3. Sounds like you have a computer with a slow drive. It took me about 10-12 minutes for a full install. Try enabling the SATA controller in your bios. I love this better than the other X64 platforms on the Open and Free Oses.

    Happy day are here.

  4. Once again, congratulations to the Linux Mint KDE team. I’m sure this will be a fine product that’s worth the wait. 🙂

  5. Downloaded and installed as a secondary OS on my work machine. I’ve switched from Ubuntu (I like to try new things) and I really enjoy this distro so far – very good work, nicely put together 😀

  6. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!! i love the KDE but have a 64 bit processor on my dektop and have been waiting on this since the 32 bit kde was released.
    🙂 great work guys.
@ hamburn sorry that it messes up on you, man!

  7. I downloaded & installed last nite w/ very little issues. I am a longtime KDE fan & Mint fan, I have been waiting on the x64 of Mint-KDE distro for a while now & It looks pretty good, so far runs pretty good on my HP Pavilion DV4-1275mx, still tweaking it for my pref. I want to say THANKS to Clem & the team, & Thanks to Boo for all the hard work.

  8. Awwww meannn… Downloaded the 32-bit KDE last night at about 11, wishing there was 64-bit, installed it the next day, get online and see there’s 64-bit? If only I had waited another day! 😛 Oh well, great release guys, really liking the KDE desktop with synaptic and mintinstall.

  9. hamburn – make a new support topic in the forum with as much detail as possible and I’ll, or someone else, will help you (but I’m way behind right now so it may take a while)

  10. Downloaded and ran live cd…. wants to login and have no login name or password that works. Can’t find one listed on cd or website! Tried root, root sudo, and guest to login and no avail. Also tried mint for login and password still no login and unable to try this linux version out. 🙁

  11. Husse thank you.
but I have not enough time in the moment.
I’m in the hospital from 15.-26. 02. and therefore
I’m preparing my laptop to show me some films
and books while I’m condemned to be in bed.
On the lappie I’ll put the fluxbox.

For my main machine I think I’ll wait for the Mint9 KDEx64.

Thank you again for your friendly offer

    H.

  12. Finally! I´m so happy!!!

The KDE4 UserExperience really sets a milestone, despite the fact not everyone likes it. But with the still growing lot of options most users should find a well-fitting configuration and get used to it.

At last we get a 64bit version of Mint. A larger amount of RAM really speeds up many sophisticated workloads. I use lots of virtual machines which really profit from a huge memory.

Thanks to all developers who made Mint KDE 64 possible!

  13. Tried it yesterday. Very nice, polished, really exciting. The problem is that it’s way too heavy for my laptop. I have a dual-core AMD Turion 1.6 gHz, 2gb ram, 128mb video card, but it’s laggy. KickOff menu is veery slow to respond, changed it to standard one, but it wasn’t too fast either. Effects are slow, Amarok takes about 1 second to respond to a mouse click. Scrolling is very laggy everywhere. Tried looking for options to increase performance, but found none. So I guess I’ll stick to Gnome until I get a new pc. 🙁

  14. Congrats Boo

Mint KDE 8 Helena really rocks!

    Very, Very Nice!
Now I have installed side by side on my PC x64
Mint Gnome 8 and Mint KDE 8 x64 !Helena”
I did not care with the process of installation being slower than the Gnome x64

  15. New Mint KDE looks extra.
This is a really good system and stable.
I dare say the best distro out. Better than Fedora or Ubuntu.
    Excellent job. THX:)))

  16. I am going to seed the torrent 24/7 for a month or so! Since I’m not a developer, I look for other ways to help out the Linux community. Linux Mint rocks, rocks, rocks… with elegance!

  17. I don’t know whats going on with all the slow pc problems but it installed on my pc within 8 minutes. I’ve been using linux for about 9 years now and its only getting faster and better. I liked the new installer gui and had no issues. Mybe its the manufactured pc’s, I have a home build pc and Mint kdex64 is fast on my pc.

AMD 945 Quad Core 3.0ghz and 4GB Memory!

  18. Only prob I’ve seen is when you are logged in to an account, other than root, after you select something from the main menu, the menu stays opened instead of closing like it does when you sign on as root. Not even a huge deal really. sometimes i like the fact that it stays opened and I can select two or three programs to run then exit by clicking the menu button again. This is the first version I’ve run on a desktop. I started with linux trying to run it on my ps2. I now have it running on my ps3 and desktop. ubuntu/ps3 and mint/desktop. very happy guys thanx.

  19. sorry for my english. I have problems with seting up the VPN . I got the pptp-linux 1.7.2-4(first i tried out 1.7.2-3) and network-manager-0.8. other vpn settings setted like ever. i cant push on the VPN connect, it is not active. somebody have the same problem?

  20. It runs without problem on Athlon II x2 250 and 2 GB RAM, on ATI R4200. But still, there is that problem with pppoe and network manager that was already reported on GNOME Mint 8. Please, solve that in the future. Thank you!

  21. It’s beautiful, I have to admit. Still, I like the Gnome edition better. KDE still has quite an overhead over Gnome and it shows. What I couldn’t do with this live DVD was to install my video drivers, even if Mint told me I had proprietary drivers that I could install. The Activate button didn’t do anything. Oh well… I’m still a Gnome fan so I’m on the safe side so far. 🙂

What I don’t like (most) about the default settings is the fact that the Dekstop icons are inside that folder. I like the classic desktop with icons and although having tested KDE 4 a few months ago I found the option to switch the desktop to classic mode, I couldn’t find it in Mint. Is it there at all or I wasn’t looking in the right places?

  22. Hi, i just downloaded this copy of mint 8 and burned to cd, shoved it in an old laptop i have, (no hdd in it) and within a few minutes i am here, on the internet without doing a thing, no bloody disks full of drivers, registering or paying vast amounts of money for useless programmes.
Instantly convinced that i will be taking Linux very seriously from now on and Microsoft can go shove vista and windows 7 where the sun don’t shine.!!!
If this new release is better than this i will be downloading it as soon as i can.
I am using an old HP/Compaq Evo Nx9105 with 512mb ram to try this out and everything

  23. Hi,

i downloaded the 64BIT KDE Version, burn it and run it:
But after the KMint Logo i get an black screen.

The same with the 32BIT KDE Mint Version.

I’m using an HP DV5 1110eg Laptop. Can someone help me?

  24. downloaded it and installed it a few days ago..

the system is full of problems.. desktop crashed a few times, wireless network drops 10 times in 30 minutes. SuperKaramba hangs and opens 3 widgets or i dunno what.. etc..

i’m installing something else, like the fluxbox edition or so

  25. Terrible, awfully slow to install.
Then it wouldn’t let me configure my two monitors as a desktop spread over both, mirrored was the only configuration possible.
When going to multiple monitors it was disabled saying that I had only one, but I could configure them independently in another tab (Size & Orientation), so it was seeing them.
    Does this make sense?
That is not all, when attempting to report a bug within the package menu it said: “cannot report because this is not a genuine Linux Mint package”.
    What is this stupidity?

  26. I am already back to GNOME64, much better.
Faster installation, no problems at all to configure video.
One more thing, while I was in KDE64 attempted to use Quassel to get to the help channel to see if somebody could help me.
    Wishful thinking.
Quassel would not connect at all.
    What a difference with Xirc!
I will continue testing Mint KDE, but will wait for next version, lots of improvements have to be made.
I’ll stick with GNOME for now.

  27. I installed LinuxMint8 from the DVD with the Linuxformat Magazine for March 2010, but unfortunately I cannot get on the net with it. However I can with Ubuntu 9.10 and 9.04. As a result I cannot download and install the required Codecs. Help!!

  28. Hi, Guys I have used/want to use Linux. However, before I switch from Microsoft XP to Linux mint, I would like to know that:
“Does Linux Mint provides inbuilt driver support for USB LAN cards?”.

  29. Hi…I have been trying different operating systems, to see which ones I like, which ones support the hardware I use (drivers in other words), which ones will see the NTFS-format external hard drive and be able to read, write from and to the external hard drive, etc.

If Helena has these things then great, but if the screen shot is the way the desktop looks, I’d rather keep Gloria as I really like the way the desktop looks.

I suppose that I could transfer the over 30 GBs of pictures, videos, 19.9 GBs of which are music files, etc., that are on the external hard drive to DVD-RWs, or somewhere, then install an operating system that doesn’t see the NTFS-format drive, change the format of the drive, then put them back to the drive, as I use it as a back up drive for these things, so if I format the internal drive I lose all of the main files, so I want to keep the copies on the external drive for backups.

  30. I am not a KDE fan, preferring 64-bit Main Edition, but judging by this LiveDVD session, the Community team have done a great job, starting off with the KDE enthusiast blue theme and LinuxMint on KDE logo through to an impressive selection of packages. Dragon Player is performing with VLC-like video and audio quality using the default graphics driver, which allows resolution changes within the session, unlike proprietary drivers, plus it’s actually performing better than in 64-bit Main Edition, so I am even more impressed – congratulations to all in the team.
I haven’t found a Workspace Switcher yet for multiple desktops, but I am having fun – who knows I could become a convert to KDE.

  31. I really wanted to try this version out, but I had so many problems with this. I tried both the 32bit and 64bit editions and neither would allow me to use Crossover Linux (32bit and 64bit, respectively) to install Office 2007. Sadly, I do still need to use Office since Evolution doesn’t work with Exchange 2007.

Also, I noticed several of the systray apps would crash on me. I would try to “quit” and nothing would happen. I had to use CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up the shutdown menu each time to turn off the computer. I tried both version on 2 seperate computers with the same results. Hopefully there will be some bug fixes released and I can try this again. I am a huge Linux Mint fan, the polished OS truly redefines computing. Maybe in the future I can try KDE again.

Oh, did anyone else experience my same problems?

    Cool!

  33. Thanks the first 64 bit version that works and all mine hardware support, no more trouble with the wireless connection, no more trouble with mine printer and no more trouble with the Nvidia graphics card. I was using Opensuse but that was an disaster no printer working, wireless problems.

  34. Excellent work!

Installed on ASUS U50Vg. Works like a charm.

It’s hard to believe, Mint busted my Fedore 12 from the HD.

    Tx guy’s !!! Great!

  35. @baoa
No you cannot install Mint with Wubi (or Mint4Win) this release. There seems to be an incompatibility. I believe it has to do with boot managers. That makes it harder for Dual Boot with Vista. I used EasyBCD (Freeware for Vista/Windows-7) to handle the Vista Bootloader. SO… intall Mint on a normal partition. There are lotsa explanation in the web how to to this. If you have questions, I (or somebody else) can give you a few hints tomorrow.

  36. Hi everyone!,
    Question:
Is it possible to dual boot linux mint 8 KDE64 that is installed on a different HDD with another HDD in which windows 7 is installed?

  37. There’s at least one annoying problem with the “screensaver”. I guess it’s NOT the screensaver itself. When in battery-mode and with enabled powersave-modes the scrsvr will try every minute to blank-out the screen – then it goes away even with hands off, blank/lock again and so on. Plug in the power cord and the problem will disappear. Or turn off the power-save mode.

Beside this i’m happy with KDE/64 Mint. Saved me a lot of time. Feel free to step on to the right direction. 😉
