This is the BETA release for Linux Mint 20.3 “Una” Cinnamon Edition.

Linux Mint 20.3 is a long term support release which will be supported until 2025. It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop even more comfortable to use.

System requirements:

  • 2GB RAM (4GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
  • 20GB of disk space (100GB recommended).
  • 1024×768 resolution (on lower resolutions, press ALT to drag windows with the mouse if they don’t fit in the screen).

Upgrade instructions:

  • This BETA release might contain critical bugs, please only use it for testing purposes and to help the Linux Mint team fix issues prior to the stable release.
  • It will be possible to upgrade from this BETA to the stable release.
  • It will also be possible to upgrade from Linux Mint 20, 20.1 and 20.2.
  • Upgrade instructions will be published after the stable release of Linux Mint 20.3.

Bug reports:

  • Bugs in this release should be reported on Github at https://github.com/linuxmint/mint20.3-beta.
  • Create one issue per bug.
  • As described in the Linux Mint Troubleshooting Guide, do not report or create issues for observations.
  • Be as accurate as possible and include any information that might help developers reproduce the issue or understand the cause of the issue:
    • Bugs we can reproduce, or which cause we understand are usually fixed very easily.
    • It is important to mention whether a bug happens “always”, or “sometimes”, and what triggers it.
    • If a bug happens but didn’t happen before, or doesn’t happen in another distribution, or doesn’t happen in a different environment, please mention it and try to pinpoint the differences at play.
    • If we can’t reproduce a particular bug and we don’t understand its cause, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to fix it.
  • The BETA phase is literally a bug squashing rush, where the team is extremely busy and developers try to fix as many bugs as fast as possible.
  • There usually are a huge number of reports and very little time to answer everyone or explain why a particular report is not considered a bug, or won’t get fixed. Don’t let this frustrate you, whether it’s acknowledged or not, we appreciate everyone’s help.

Many thanks to all the people who support our project. Thank you very much to all of you for your help and your generous donations.

All of our focus is on the BETA for Linux Mint 20.3. We’re planning to release it early this December. We’re finalizing translations, artwork and still making fixes and adjustments but for the most part it’s almost ready to enter QA.

Some of the new features in 20.3 haven’t been revealed yet, but we’re so close to release, I’m not sure there’s much point in giving you a preview 🙂

MATE 1.26 and Flatpak 1.12 were backported.

In the XApps, the PDF reader received proper manga support (hitting the left arrow key in manga mode now goes forward in the document), the image viewer received the ability to quickly fit to the width or the height of the displayed picture, and many of the apps received improvements for small display resolutions (hiding the menubar, not showing the toolbar in fullscreen…etc), and dark-mode support.

Cinnamon 5.2 features multi-calendar events. Events you create in your calendars will appear in your calendar applet:

Events in the applet use the same color as the calendar they belong to so it’s easy to keep track of multiple calendars.

The applet syncs with evolution-data-server so it supports many online calendars and applications. For instance if you want to use GNOME Calendar it just works out of the box. If you want to use Google Calendar, simply connect it in Online Accounts and it works as well. If you want to use Thunderbird, install an add-on to integrate it with evolution-data-server and it will start to work as well.

Sticky Notes and Hypnotix will feature a search function.

And last but not least there’s a little gift in 20.3, a brand new app. I’ll keep this one as a surprise for now though. I can tell you its name since it’s not very revealing, it’s called thingy 😉

Before anything else, let’s thank all the people who contribute to this project. Many people do, in very different ways. Thank you all for your help!

A batch of bug fix updates was sent to Mint 20.2 and LMDE 4 for the following projects: cjs, cinnamon-screensaver, muffin, cinnamon, nemo, xapps, mintreport and bulky.

In muffin, one of the fixes caused a regression. We’re working on it and the issue is tracked at https://github.com/linuxmint/muffin/issues/607.

Following some of the discussions we had here on this blog and your feedback in the comments section, the upcoming versions of Xed and Xreader will feature an option to hide the menubar. When it is hidden the application uses less space and fits in smaller screen resolution. Pressing the Alt key makes the menubar visible momentarily.

Xed also gained the ability to switch between opened tabs using Ctrl-Tab and Ctrl-Shift-Tab.

The System Reports tool will check systems to ensure they’re merged (i.e. according to usrmerge specs) and warn users when this isn’t the case.

In LMDE 4, Firefox 78 ESR will be upgraded to version 94. LMDE will no longer follow the ESR version. It will use the same version of Firefox as Linux Mint.
