  1. Estimado Clem, muchas gracias por el lanzamiento y todo tu esfuerzo.
Este fin de semana instalaremos LM Sarah Cinnamon en mis equipos.

  2. > To remove samba, open a terminal and type “apt remove –purge samba”.

Tried this on my BETA system, and got “Unable to locate package –purge”.

Congrats on another GREAT release, Clem and the team!

Edit by Clem: Sorry about this, there are two hyphens there.. the blog just doesn’t show them correctly. You can also type “apt purge samba”, it should do the same.

  3. Off-topic:
I can’t update an applet on cinnamon-spices. The moment I try to upload the zip, I get

    Can you help me?

  4. Is it advisable to do a complete reinstall since we are jumping from 17 to 18 or will an upgrade do?

Thanks Mint Team for all your hard work

  5. I congratulate the all team member and contributors,

Could you edit gpg key info from A25BAE09 to 451BBBF2 on ISO verifiying page for Linux Mint 18.

  6. Awesome work!

I installed 64-bit Cinnamon Edition and it works great but I am unable to import my keys via seahorse (import button greyed out) or manually via gnome-keyring. Is this a known issue?

  7. Sorry for about gpg key, earlier I get the error about gpg key. I redownload sha256sum.txt.gpg and sha256sum.txt files and now any problem with A25BAE09.

  8. Excellent news! Thanks for your hard work in creating a new, exciting release of the world’s best Linux distro. 🙂

  9. Got it yesterday from your mirrors, running absolutely fantastic so far. Thanks a lot for your hard work!

  10. Mint 18 Cinnamon still will not see my wired ethernet!. any tips or suggestions how to get it working?

  11. Clem, gwenview is still broken as per my previous post. The fix in the release notes does not help. Googling leads me to believe it is a transition problem from qt4 – qt5 and kipi-plugins seems to be implicated. Running from the terminal:

Is this an upstream problem that cannot be fixed?

  12. love mint, love the people behind it. you deserve all the good things in life. thanks for listening to your users always.

  13. Great! Now onto KDE and XFCE editions. Please teams – make it work! I NEED Plasma 5 in KDE!

    Thanks.

  14. @Vali: have you tried turning on your laptop with the lid closed? And then (after login) set it to use the second monitor only? Or maybe using the laptop’s hotkeys?

  15. Manuel…
KDE and XFCE Betas follow Cinnamon and Mate. It’s usually around one month later that the Beta appears for testing.
But it’s rather “when it’s ready” over a set date.

  16. Thank you to the entire Linux Mint team.
It’s not yet in the update manager, so please share the sed commands to upgrade.
    I currently run 17.3 Rosa x64 Cinnamon 2.8.8
    Thanks.

  17. @Vali (#15) – If you haven’t already, reboot and go into your BIOS/EFI settings and look for the “Display or “Monitor” configuration. Most display/monitor settings in a BIOS or EFI will have 3 options labeled something like this (the names for the displays may different of course):

    Internal
    External
    Both or Internal and External

Since you state you only use the external monitor, set your Display setting in your BIOS/EFI to “External”. Hopefully that should solve your problem.

  18. Congratulations for your work!
We, the users of Mint 17.x, are waiting for the possibility to upgrade to LM18, similarly how it worked (very smoothly!) from 17 or 17.1 to the others.
We appreciate very much your work!

Meanwhile I noticed some very small bugs in Cinnamon version.

I commented on the blogs previously during beta testing time, but I am not sure if Clem or other testers regarding LM18 Cinnamon version have seen my post:

I discovered that after choosing Windows borders other than default Mint-X options (on Themes/Windows borders) the following 3 applications (Calculator and Disks from Accessories) and Simple Scan (from Graphics) do not change their windows borders according to the new chosen option (they remain unchanged into Mint-X).

I checked this bug on 2 cases, one in a LM18 virtual machine and the other as live CD.

This doesn’t happen in Mint 17.3 Rosa.

All other features seems to be OK.

  20. @NikoKrause: I had the same issue with my Logitech C270 and Skype. You have to install the package: pavucontrol. It’s in the repos. You run pavucontrol through the terminal. I’m not sure exactly what settings fixed it, but I was able to get the microphone to work with Skype.

  21. used the ‘upgrade’ option that should keep the old user profile, it didn’t upgrade, it just made a new install, without the old user files. :'(

  22. Hey Clem i wanted to know why the desktop picture looks a little bit different the apps are the same as the new Linux mint the color hasent changed like the one on top.

  23. Is it OK that I have not seen any updates in my BETA version? Can it be that 18 stable version was installed __gradually__, by installing any appeared updates all last month?

  24. Congratulations release!

When a release is published, Japan time was past 11 pm.
but I have to obtain a reaction that Japanese users have installed.
The future will also be able to expect an increase in Linux Mint users.

  25. Great Job!
I suggest to everyone that are downloading this distro to donate something: times are harder for open projects like this, they are becoming uncommons…

  26. @Vali — I have the same problem with being unable to configure mdm to use my external monitor (HDMI in my case). I reported it in the BETA post comments, but I still haven’t found a way to solve the problem, sorry.

  27. I don’t have any level 1 updates to apply.

  29. Hello, unfortunately my problems with LM 18 Cinnamon in a virtual machine of VMware fusion which I remarked in the Beta-Blog still exist. After installing vmware-tools there are serious graphic bugs that lead to a kind of transparency of windows especially those of nemo and the other x-apps but also and even worse in Libre-Office windows. The Libre-Office menus are actually nearly unreadable. Using the themes app and changing borders or icons to mint-y brings unreadability to the app’s window. I don’t know wether this is a bug of vmware-tools or LM, but neither LM 18 Mate nor LM 17.3 Cinnamon shows such effects.Could anyone test it or has a hint to solve these problems?

  30. It would be better if you guys set up a server in Nepal too. The internet speed here can be quite slow on downloading so 1.6GB is a huge size for us. But Nepal Telecom server gives awesome downloading speed. Even ubuntu have their server setup with them. Please consider giving it a thought.

  31. Any thoughts?

  32. Hi Clem and team, Fabulous job. Special joy in trying out new release 🙂 Due to bandwith issues, couldn’t lay my hands on Beta Sarah. 😉

Another great release. Still running live session on Mint Box 2.
All good so far. Eyes slowly getting accustomed to new dark theme and colors. :))

Mint Y Dark – Not sure if I am the only one who feel this but Libreoffice menu bar are bit difficult to spot, especially one without any colors. Anyways, aware this is evolving theme. Am sure this will mature over a period.

By the way, was thinking if Cinnamon has any official extensions. Applets, Desklets, all have default list but this one is empty – good to have something for new users to get idea about the functionality.

  33. Please everyone that are downloading consider to donate something. This is a great project and deserve the financial support.

  34. Hi, I love the dark theme but writing in TexStudio is impossible because there is not enough contrast between the colour of letters and the page. Is it possible to fix it? Thanks

  35. Hi:

Does mint 18 solve the issue of mint 17.3 with the ASUS brand pcs? I have 2 ASUS desktops and mint 17.3 64bit was incompatible as I could not run it or install. So is the ASUS issue fixed in the mint 18 or not? Thanks in advance for your reply.

  36. to @Rejan (and all other that have not downloaded yet).

Please consider the torrent if you have a decent internet connection from your internet supplier. Then you need to have no consideration regarding servers :). I did download with torrent and it worked just fine. And as always when the distro a new, the servers works heavily.

    Just my five cents 😉

  37. Failed. I had to interrupt the installation. Where is the azerty? Normally, as it was in Linux Mint 17 “Rosa” during the installation we could choose not only the language “Nederlands” but also the country “België”. We type in azerty. I couldn’t get out, everything was in qwerty. No succes in France and in Belgium. I ‘ll try again next year or so.

  38. Hello, I installed LM18 in compatibility mode and started it later with nomodeset (nvidia gt218). I installed the nvidia-304-updates and restarted. Now, the panel is unclickable – only mintUpdate reacts and the menu can navigate with the keyboard. The desktop and all windows works, but the panel and other “cinnamon layers” don’t react for mouse. (cannot add a second panel, the corner functions don’t work) Maybe you can help me and sorry for my english. Thanks.

  39. Hi Clem and whole Linux Mint Team!

My congratulation – LM 18 Cinnamon looks totally great, Installation ran absolutely flawless, I’m deeply impressed of your work! Also the new set of pictures Mint brings along are real eye candy! I’m currently trying to get familiar with the new Mint-Y style, seems to me a little too “flat” 😉

But: Where has the “gnome-user-share” (Persönliche Dateifreigabe) gone to? I need them to receive files via Bluetooth.

Please go ahead with you wonderful distro, which showed my a new style in usage of my computer I never could imagine before!

    Thanks!

  41. Mint 18 has the same bug as Ubuntu 16.04. No Wifi on a HP notebook. The installation stopped (got stuck) while getting the sourcecodes, that is the only difference with Ubuntu 16.04. So, after waiting one half hour I interrupted the installation and found out the keyboard was in qwerty.
In Mint cinnamon 17.03 and in Ubuntu 14.04 there is no Wifi problem on this HP notebook. Mint 18 and Ubuntu 16.04 have to do something about these bugs before I can install it on this computer.

  42. @54: You need to adjust your LibreOffice display and accessibility settings. The application should automatically use a suitable icon set.

  43. MacBook Pro 13 Retina – still unable to wake from suspend after closing lid. This feature worked perfect in 17.3, also does not work in Ubuntu 16.04 – what happened?

    Please help

  44. Mint 18 is popular, my seedbox already has uploaded 120GB of MATE and 210GB of cinnamon in about 12 hours. Team Mint another fine release.

  45. !!Since Ubuntu 16.04 is the upstream (i.e. base) of Linux Mint 18.x,expect most Ubuntu bugs to creep into Linux Mint.!!

  46. @Clem and team- Another great release. Glad to see there is an easy way to install the codecs on offline machines. Smart move!

@glauco – If you’re running 18 beta it will update itself to be inline with the full release via the update manager. No special intervention required beyond accepting the usual updates.

  47. Al Giacoio, first if you use SSD, just disable hibernate, hibernate is hurful to SSD disks.
I found that are many problems with kernel 4.4 series in Ubuntu, for this type of problem.
Then, or you could use 4.2 or 4.6 kernel series. Installing one that series could solve.

  48. Hi Guys ,beautiful job on that linux 18 cinnamon just love it but got a problem to upgrade kodi from 15.2 to 16.1 git i did this=sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
    sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kodi(usualyy this upgrade kodi to 16.1,and it did in linux mate 18 beta
but now i get this=E: /var/cache/apt/archives/kodi_2%3a16.1~git20160425.1001-final-0xenial_all.deb: trying to overwrite ‘/usr/share/xsessions/kodi.desktop’, which is also in package kodi-data 15.2+dfsg1-3ubuntu1

  49. sound seems to be always unplugged in mint 18, can get working via pavucontrol, but, need do this every time switch on pc,that the reason i went back to 17.3 from manjaro,
solong ill re install 17.3 as no problem with that,,
noticed on your 18 page that bugs were fixed, but some things set for the 18.1 version, so ill wait and see, what happens.
    thank you so far

  50. Well, today i find out that i can’t run mint 18 because i have an AMD APU (a8 5600k) with a radeon HD7560D Graphic Card. Is there an aproximate date when the open source drivers will be launched?

  51. To Clem and the LM team, congratulations and thank you for yet another release of this awesome OS.

I just got a new notebook a few days ago and installed using the beta ISO. Looking forward to using it in the coming months. Thank you.

  52. Thanks Clem and team for another marvelous Mint edition.

It is running fine, except for starting up and closing down.
Particularly closing down is extremely slow compared to 17.3.
Does anyone know what the reason might be?

  53. Hey guys I know you all are getting into the graphical pieces and fine tuning. I also know until my parents had a fatal crash on their xp machine my programming skills since windows 3.1 have been to follow the hive mind and have i have been trained on programming..install disk and recovery of Windows so may be on my end…anyway:

Say you go to Kali to get a pendrive to test security since I am not even sure yet the basics of your system of keys and needing to shaXXXsum. Check out this link:

    https://www.offensive-security.com/information-security-training/advanced-windows-exploitation/

At the top scroll over to Projects/Kali Linux…Where the drop down boxes should appear they actually appear too far over, where-as in Windows which shall from here on be referred to as TSIWRT@Mint(The System I Wont Return To @fter Mint) its been where the drop downs will sequence down first to, in this case the left, then the next to the right…left, right, left, right…again it may be my bad as Ive only been running Mint and started with a beta so Im having issues um everywhere like how to even change my sources.list so its not showing the installation iso. I havent updated Xenial fully since the beginning so you may have it fixed. I do wish to say thank you. I gave them my far superior (hardware) mini portable desktop with great functioning wifi over an internal dongle, yet another function Im lost on, but learning, and took their factory installed barely made it as a 64bit XP/Lenovo laptop with no regrets…you guys seem to have absolutely through x-ing over and community input every single tool I need to customize but by using shared repository files have still left a simplistic looking yet far superior machine in a nice neat clean new look and feel. Broadcom wifi thing and my knowledge of repositories aside my only true out of the box issue is that I feel Firefox is a very, maybe the word is top-heavy, slow browser with issues of its on. The key thing I wished I had saw a huge red blowing caution sign about since im the uncertified half of the connection now….alas I will find my way and never go back but I dont think the DROP BOX issue is something i can fix on my end graphically. Thanks for showing me the way out of the money pit that is TSIWRT@Mint

  54. Hi Guys,
it seemed to be a love at first sight then after installing the black screen of cursor appears only. 2 other distros are installing fine so its not an issue w. the laptop,
why cant it be fixed once and for all, it seems to be a common issue??
Its really sad, I`ll ditch this distro again because of that.

  55. I installed Cinammon 18 beta, with the nomodeset option, then installed nvidia drivers (Dell Inspiron with a nvidia and an intel graphic card, uefi system, windows 10 preinstalled). tty consoles are not available. Only Ctrl+Alt+F4 “works”, in the sense that the console appears (although with so tiny characters that makes it almost impossible to use), but then it is not possible to switch to X anymore. I read almost all about efifb, vga=xxx options, but could not find a solution. I installed the nouveau drivers (with nomodeset at boot), but the problem persists. Any idea? Thanks.

  56. Just installed Mint18 very impressed BUT…..

Connect to Server > Webdav doesn’t work. The error is…..

HTTP Error: Error resolving ‘https’: Temporary failure in name resolution.

    Hope this gets fixed soon.

  57. Personal File Sharing Preferences still does not exist in LM 18 Cinnamon, while it does exist in Ubuntu 16.04. It was removed since LM 17.3.

I use it to enable receiving of files via bluetooth.

Any particular reason why that was removed? And without it, how can we set to receive files via bluetooth? On a paired device, when I send a file to LM via bluetooth, nothing happened. Transfer just failed as it doesn’t prompt in LM whether to accept the transfer or not.

With Personal File Sharing Preferences, it can be set to to automatically receive an incoming files via bluetooth, or with a prompt/permission notification.

  58. Hi Clem, Thank you so much for now making the lsb package available in Mint 18. My Epson WF 3640 printer now installs using the Linux drivers downloaded from the Epson web-site.

Have use update manager to install all of the latest updates to my previous beta version.

Note there is still an issue with displaying the correct time. I noticed that when the update manager was installing one of the packages, one of the error message was :
“no support for locale en_AU_uft8 (or something very similar)”.

However, the issue with the cursor jumping around the screen when typing seems to have been resolved although I haven’t tested throughly. Am hoping also that the previous startup and shutdown issues I reported in item #700 on the Cinnamon Beta post might be resolved.

Thanks team for the great effort and looking forward to finally shifting over to an open source OS as my default OS.

  59. It is so cool to hear that there is a new release of Linux Mint! Congratulations and thank you very much for it! 🙂 I like the cinnamon version of Linux Mint so much! 🙂
I have already installed the BETA version of Linux Mint 18 Sarah Cinnamon on my notebook and I would like to ask, please, do I need to download and reinsall my system to the stable version or the stable version is created from the BETA version automatically just by the updates ? Sorry for this trivial question, as a woman I’m not an expert in computers.

  60. Unfortunatly I can not run the liveDVD (18 Cinnamon 64bit). But 17.3 works fine. Hope it will be fixed so I can try out the new one. For the future it will be recommended that the developers create a system which can upgrade via the “Update management”. Have thanks on working on Linux Mint.

  61. @simon @Kirk M @nomadewolf @Clem
I’m using HDMI too. On ubuntu works well if I close the laptops… It’s pretty sad that Mint has this problem. I like very much v18, good job!

  62. If you have a AMD/ATI Graphics card and use STEAM but STEAM will install but not run. Open Terminal and put this in it or paste it into a file and make it executable. So far all my STEAMPLAY Games work.

    LD_PRELOAD=’/usr/$LIB/libstdc++.so.6′ DISPLAY=:0 steam

  63. Hello,

is the marketshare data on the community.linuxmint.com website actually updated or is it just a representation of what the users selected when creating their accounts on said site?

As always: Good job on the release!

  64. @ Clem:
Great work by you and the Mind Dev Team. Another great release. Only issue I’ve found is that the sound effects are erratic. For the most part, only Starting Cinnamon, Switching Workspace, and Tiling and Snapping Windows seem to work with any degree of consistency. The rest don’t seem to work at all. They all worked fine in the Beta version. That is how it is on my HP Envy Touchsmart 15 laptop which had a wipe and clean reinstall. On my Desktop which was wiped and had a clean install of the Beta release, all the sound effects are working fine.

Other than that, congratulations on a great release. 🙂

  65. An update on item 53.

I received those errors on my Ubuntu 16.04 box, however, it worked fine on my Mint 17 box. Looking forward to two Mint boxes 🙂

  66. Hi, Mint team i am very happy with mint 18 but their is a problem in all distros based on Ubuntu 16.04 exactly in 4.4 kernel with Nvidia cards. The problem is black screen before install mint and after.
I must disable nouveau to login (nouveau.modeset=0)
I need any way to solve this problem. Thanks

  67. This is absolutely fantastic Linux distro, every thing here works as it should. Big thanks to all Linux Mint creators! I’m sure I must even donate this project because this is so far the best, the most useful, the most stable and the most ergonomic Linux distribution for desktop PC of all!

  68. Just installed it here. Mint-Y theme is beautiful. It looks amazing. Very solid, no bugs found so far. Wonderful release.

  69. I have installed LM 18 Sarah Cinnamon beta on my Gateway laptop and successfully upgraded to the stable version. I have use it for one month and I like most of it. Will look forward to when the upgrade instructions from LM 17.3 will come out. That is my main stable system, hope I can upgrade without affecting my installed apps and configurations.

  70. I previously posted in ‘Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” Cinnamon – BETA Release’ post (see comments 487, 571 and 774) for an issue with sound.

To resume, in sound settings :
    * Mint 18 Cinnamon -> no analog output device (so no sound from my PC speakers)
    * Mint 18 Mate : no S/PDIF output device

To understand better, my PC is plugged to :
    * speakers on my desktop with jack
    * a Home Cinema with S/PDIF
    * a TV with HDMI

My audio chipset is “Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio Controller (rev 06)”.

    Installing latest linux-firmware and kernels 4.4.14 & 4.6.3 didn’t change anything.

So when Mint 18 Cinnamon has been release, I wanted to check if the issue was the same, and boot on it with a Live USB. Here is a summary of what I could see :

    * before booting, I put my speakers on
    * when Sarah started, I could hear sound from my speakers (yessss !!!)
    * I check sound settings and I could see strange things :
    – in “Périphériques” (“devices”, yes I’m french) : no analog device, only HDMI and S/PDIF ones
    – in “Paramètres du périphérique” (device settings) : there was an “Analog Stereo Output” profile anyway (see http://ovh.to/Noqkv32)
    * when I click on one of the devices, profiles change with “Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output” for HDMI (see http://ovh.to/hNwp1hw) or “Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output” for S/PDIF (see http://ovh.to/qZ8mVqR)

And then no way to find back “Analog Stereo Output” profile !!

But it isn’t finished with strange things…

When I click on HDMI device, I can see 3 profiles :
    – Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output
    – Digital Stereo (HDMI 5.1) Output
    – Digital Stereo (HDMI 7.1) Output

When I click on HDMI 5.1 or HDMI 7.1 : no more HDMI profiles are availables, only S/PDIF !!!

    So to résume :
    * clicking on an other profile than “Analog Stereo Output” make it disappear
    * clicking on 5.1 or 7.1 HDMI profile make all HDMI profiles diappear

It was working like a charm with Mint 17.x, so what happens ?

Thank you for your help, if no solution is found I’ll have to downgrade to Mint 17 🙁

PS: I tried with Ubuntu 16.04 -> same issue, although setting boxes are differents.

  71. Hello to all the developers.

I would like to thank everyone that has had a hand in making this release.

I do have one problem though, Nvidia drivers breaks the DVD Menus in VLC. I can watch the DVD, but the Menu items do not highlight what is selected. If there is a highlight it is usually in the wrong place. The only way that I can get it to work is to use the opensource driver.

Thank you again to all the developers that has made this release.

  72. What would be nice would be the ability to upgrade from one version of Mint to another from DVD, in the same way you can with Windows. So instead of a completely new install or download from the internet and install over you current system, if you could install the new OS over your current OS from DVD without having to do a full re-install and keep all your applications, well, that would be fantastic. One disk and multiple upgrades of various machines locally.

    Any chance?

Something like this would be ground breaking.

  73. I see no option for installing themes other than those available online. This used to exist. Was it removed or is there something wrong with my install of the 32 bit version?

  74. I have a data drive, and all my home folders are links to my auto-mounted-at-boot data drive. I do this to be able to switch out an OS without affecting data.

Somehow, i’m not able to trash items from the desktop, even though I can do that from a folder INSIDE the desktop.
    Any ideas?

  75. I have not used windows os since 18 months. Cinnamon has satisfied all my needs. Thanks Clem & The team. This version is the top.

And to downloaders: use torrent. It is reaally fast.

  76. After installation of Linux mint 18 cinnamon, I got this message saying
    ‘Running in Software rendering mode
Cinnamon is currently running without video hardware
acceleration and, as a result, you may observe much higher
    than normal CPU usage.
There could be a problem with your drivers or some other issue.
For the best experience, it is recommended that you only use this mode
    for troubleshooting purposes.’
Please give advise and also my display resolution is 640×480(4:3)
I have no problem on my previous version Linux mint 17.2 32bit version.

  77. Is there another way to verify the integrity of the ISO as I am finding the instrctions provided to difficult to follow.

    Thanks for any help.

  78. Hi mint team!!!
First of all i must give you congratulations for all good work that makes all mint community happy with such great OS.
I enjoy using LM for a long time, but must admit can,t use cinnamon version because of it blindness to my sound card. It provides me with stereo only instead of 5.1 and even internal mic is not recognized. While in mate i am happy with sound recognition, but i always liked cinnamon more because its more eye candy for me.
Hope you’ll solve this in the future and one day i can enjoy using cinnamon again 🙂 For now i must stay in mate..
In case if you gonad do something :
    Card: HDA Intel
    Chip: Realtek ALC1200
Clean install on Intell 2.0 Ghz radeon 4670M MSI laptop
Besides… running alsamixer command in terminal and manual enabling 5.1 is working, but it’s annoying to do it each time after restart ant it’s not helping with microphone issue.
Anyway TX for a great OS 🙂
    Regards

  79. i downloaded new sarah cinnamon edition 64bit but it wont boot its is giving ” (initramfs) mount : mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/output error can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs” error i also tried the same iso in virtual getting the same error

Edit by Clem: This usually indicates a bad download. Check the sha256sum of your ISO image and download it again if it’s wrong.

  80. If I upgrade from 17.2, to 17.3, then later to 18, will that remove packages not present in 17.3 and 18?

If I have “Personal File Sharing” in Mint 17.2, will that be removed when I upgrade to 17.3 or 18?

  81. Congratulation! I installed 18 last night. Was afraid that it might not be up to my needs but it is! It works even better than 17.3! It’s only been a day but up ’till now it is running smoothly. Vous êtes des champions!!!

  82. Please consider bringing back the versions with multimedia codecs. It was one major reason for linux mint popularity with users and on distrowatch.
I understand it is not a big deal to download the codecs, but it still helps to have a system out of the box, than bother with technical details and troubleshooting.

  83. Three days in, have been using beta since its release, but still no updates in the Update Manager to the stable release. Not even after no matter how many refreshes and system reboots.

  84. Thanks guys!
I have problem installing though, when being told about UEFI I try to click ok but it wont work, go back button wong work either.
I’ve tried in normal mode and in nomodeset.
    Does somebody know?

  85. I am getting the session locked by NW.js. Its telling me that the session “may” be in use on another machine. It gives the name of my machine. I had Mint 17.3 on it previous and did a new install (format the drive space it was on). I am also getting options for accessibility popping up when logging in. Neither of these items were in play in 17.3 for one I never touched accessibility. This is getting a bit painful because I have to unlock the session each time and there is no clear way to erase the profile. Bill Gates would call this an undocumented feature for sure. I was surprised to see the desktop from 17.3 recreated almost entirely. Wallpaper and especially my start icons (speaking of Bill, Windows start icons, my little joke). They icons just showed up first log in. Also the logon screen changed. On first boot it looked like a different version and on second boot it looked more like 17.3. There is also a message that flashes so quickly I can’t read it. Something like if you want to stop the background process press (something) I have seen something in the boot up twice, but could not read. Close as I can get. I am going to try two things. First just to delete my user profile and call myself some other name. Maybe I get a clean desktop to build. Second would be another install. I noticed the install went very fast so I am not sure what went on with that. Anxious to use this slick interface. I liked the beta but this just does seem like the same thing so far.

  86. Wait, Samba is not working? Will that interfer with sharing movies to my Windows machines using Kodi? I would update the stupid thing to Mint but it is a HP laptop that is a PITA to boot from another source and the screen is broken so I can’t find the menu I need.

  87. I have had to revert to 17.3 cause 18 has introduced a new bug that previously did not exist – my MacBook Pro 13 Retina can longer wake after suspend. I have tried updating the Kernel, auto login, hibernate and nothing helps. Sad to say this is on the Ubuntu sloppy side of development as the same issue exists with 16.04.

    🙁

  88. Yeah, Congratulation!!
I am using 17.3 now, can’t wait for upgrade instruction 😀

Thank you, Clem, team, and all contributors

  89. Mint-Y folder icons are still the same like in Mint-X. I read somewhere that you weren’t satisfied with this solution and are still searching for new ones. I want to know if you are aware, that the creator of the Arc theme also created Arc folder icons (to be found on the creators github account). They look pretty decent to me.

  90. Yeah, Looks like WiFi is hosed. Doesn’t even give a list to select from. (17.2 still works thankfully)

  91. I encounter a problem related to, I guess, UEFI/GPT.

My laptop have to drives: 240GB SSD and 1TB HDD.

On first install, I select manual paritioning.
/efi, / , and swap on SSD. /home on HDD.
After install my laptop no longer boot to Mint. Instead, prompted me to enter password for BIOS. And there’s no boot sequence found on BIOS. Resetting laptop just ended up with request for password to enter BIOS.

So, I reinstall Mint 18. This time, with autopartitioning.
/efi, / , and swap created on SSD, including /home as part of /.
HDD still formatted with ext4 but have no mount assignment by default. It’s as if it’s there as external drive. After reboot, it worked fine.

Now I wonder why it’s not working on manual partitioning while it works on autopartitioning.

I don’t know how to manually transfer /home from from SSD to HDD so I retry reinstalling again in manual partitioning.

This time, I didn’t repartition anything. I just leave the partition as is, except that I set to format / and assign /home on HHD formatting /home.

    After reboot, it works.

I don’t know what went wrong on first install. But it did got repaired after doing autopartitioning then do the manual install, formatting / and /home.

    Just sharing my experience though.
If other’s experience something like this, at least they would know how to fix it.

  92. Am thinking of upgrading to 18.0, but have just recently installed 17.3. Is there a way to up grade without wiping the disk and installing the new version? I’m assuming that, like Ubuntu, LinuxMint is a fixed release and couldn’t be upgraded as a rolling release. Please tell me I’m wrong.

  93. Hi Clem, the fn keys that control Brightness settings still has heavy delays on my ASUS PC (ASUS X401A), is there any workarounds?

  94. Hi
I have been using Linux Mint for almost 2 years now and really enjoying it.

I just moved from 17.3 to 18 (cinnamon). Did a clean install.
Everything seemed fine until I tried connecting to the internet. A few popular sites open but the rest times out. Some repositories upgrade and others fail. I also cannot install software via software manager. The Linux home page eve fails!

    I re-installed 17.3 alongside 18 and here I am, everything working perfectly.

    Please help?!

  95. Continuation on comment 124:
I tried doing the installation again and this time I did the automatic partitioning instead of doing it manually and it worked.
I hope this will help someone or point the developers in the direction where to find the bug.
    Cheers!

  96. I had big problems with my brand new Intel NUC6i5SYH and Mint 17.3 (Mint 17.3 didn’t support the new hardware properly) Sso I decided to wipe the disk and reinstall Mint 18 – and now every thing seems to works perfect. Thank you for this release!

PS: I had to disable UEFI legacy boot in the BIOS before I could install GRUB on my Samsung 950 PRO M2 SSD disk.

  97. Missing the file icon on panel. Would like to be able to either drag/drop home folder to panel, or drop down: add to panel. Mint 18 Sarah cinnamon.

  98. I tried to verify the ISO but received the following message :

gpg: Signature made Thu 30 Jun 2016 21:13:33 AEST using RSA key ID A25BAE09
gpg: Can’t check signature: No public key

I could not follow the instructions found on this blog to verify the ISO so I used this one : https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2266

Could someone please tell me what I have missed or not completed correctly?

    Thanks for any help.

  99. @135-beetlebob: Mint 17.3 will be upgraded without wiping anything from your disc. This will be feasible in a few days.

  100. I have this problem since beta. If I enable automatic login during installation, I’m still presented with login screen after restart. And then, in System Settings, I’ll see that Timed Login is enabled. If I disable it, I am still presented with login screen after each restart/power on.
The point is – I don’t want to see the Login Screen, but I still keep seeing one…

  101. Hi, continuation on comment 50:
There is definitely a bug in the combination of cinnamon 18 and vmware-tools or open-vm-tools! I tested cinnamon 18 on a vm with Opensuse Leap 42.1 and received the same graphic mistakes on cinnamon (transparency of windows…) using open-vm-tools. I don’t know where the reason for these effects is, in cinnamon or vmware-tools, but Cinnamon 2.X worked well.

  102. When I use firefox it tells me I mutliple applications open and can barely type, then tells me to restart computer. google does not have these issues.

  103. This is absolutely hands down the best OS available. Great job! I’m totally fed-up with Windoze and Apple has gone to the dark side. I can upgrade Mint faster than I can do a patch to OSX. Long live Mint!

  104. Clem:

I think it would be helpful if your Downloads page (from the main HOME page) or your Verify the image Page gave a link back the SHA256.txt and SHA256.txt.gpg files. I know that these can be found within your Release Announcement, but that can take a bit of searching.

It would also be useful if your https://linuxmint.com/verify.php gave a link to show how current windows users could verify the download using gpg. The current page is fine if you are happy with the command line, but many incoming users may be scared off by this…

The current User Manual does not mention the GPG check on the SHA256 files at all.

    Maybe something like: https://www.deepdotweb.com/jolly-rogers-security-guide-for-beginners/how-to-verify-your-downloaded-files-are-authentic/

It is very important for users to know that the gpg check has succeeded if they end up with the alarming message:
“Not enough information to check signature validity. Check details.”

    Cheers,
    NChewie

  105. Hi, anybody knows whether Thunderbird “new email arrived” notification works or not in Mint 18?
LM 17.3 had a problem with it.

  106. even though in update manager I have deselected level 5 updates, 2 of them still appear in my list, both related to the kernel.

Edit by Clem: Hi Alex, there’s a separate option for kernel updates in the preferences.

  107. steam does not start.

    LD_PRELOAD=’/usr/$LIB/libstdc++.so.6′ DISPLAY=:0 steam

    fixes it.

Scrolling direction on Trackpad is wrong on Volume adjust. But “natural” scrolling feels wrong for me anyway.

  108. Hi,

my problem is that mint 18 does not recognize HDMI output for sound after suspending it. If I restart it is OK or when I go to “Display” and change configuration f.e. to laptop then go back to HDMI it is also OK (I can hear sound from external monitor). I use ATI Radeon.
If there is sth you can do with it, then please 🙂

  109. Tried it on a USB flash drive. Excellent work, Clem and team.
Please, give instructions on how to upgrade from 17.3.

  110. Hi,

Anyone using BTRFS instead of ETX4? What is the best file system for /boot partition?

Thanks in advance for any help

  111. how do I upgrade from 17.3 stable? I checked the update manager.. it doesn’t show anything. lsb_release -a shows 17.3

  112. One thing I’ve never been able to come to terms with in Cinnamon is ‘themes’. Whenever I move on to a new edition of Mint, I copy the theme settings from the last version, but for some reason I can never get the appearance I had in the last version.

I have been using the ‘Glass Mint’ theme for years and don’t want to change that. I just want to set the colour of the window borders and the sliding bar. Why is that so very difficult to do in Mint, while it is so easy to turn any folder into another colour?

With this version of Mint, it doesn’t seem to be possible to add any colour at all. It’s either grey or black borders.

  113. @ 148. Innocent Bystander:
What is the best file system for /boot partition?

As I recall the best for /boot is ext2 (it’s more efficient without the journaling). Quite an advanced subject…

  114. I was very happy to see Mint 18 Cinnamon edition released!
Thank you for your hard work!

Before installing I “Ducked” (not googled) a few reviews and it was mostly very positive so I went for it. Fresh clean install.

I’m on a Dell Inspiron 17R SE with the nVidia GeForce 650 GPU and i7-3610QM CPU.

I have a serious issue. ALL VIDEOS STUTTER! Local/online/flash/mp4 no exception. And not only the audio but video stutters as well. Kernel issue???

I had no problems whatsoever on 17.3, 17.2 etc. it was running like a Swiss watch!

I tried switching to the the integrated Intel GPU , but it still does the same…

Would appreciate any help! Thank you!

  115. Hye Dear Mint team. Congratulations and thank you very much for the new 18 version. Sadly, after installing cinnamon 18, i found that psensor integration was far better on 17.3 version. Moreover, this 18 version of cinnamon seems to shut down much less faster than on the 17.3 version. It’s “dommage”.

  116. @149 – As per the announcement at the top of the page:

“It will also be possible to upgrade from Linux Mint 17.3. Upgrade instructions will be published next month.”

  117. installer crashes during copying files to hard disk.

but lm 17.3 works fine. please help me with it so it doesnt give me problems when i upgrade next month

  118. Hi, I also had issues with my wireless HS-W1 microphone not working, in the audio settings it was listed but apparently no input was coming out of it.
I installed pavucontrol and fixed the issue, in particular, in pavucontrol both the internal mic of my desktop machine and the wireless one were listed (in audio settings only the wireless), and there I could disable the internal one, set the wireless as fallback, and voilà, I now have the mic working. Hopefully it will help others.

  119. The text on the screensaver settings page is misleading. The option “Lock the computer when inactive” appears to be the amount of idle time before the screensaver activates, not before the screen is locked.

  120. Hi Clem et al,

Just to say thanks for this awesome release!

I have just one small request on behalf of photographers the world over…

Would it be at all possible to tweak the desktop image so that it respects any given colour management settings please? Even if it draws the info from any exif file and/or the current settings in ‘Colors’.

This would make the world of difference to our day-to-day user experience.

    Keep up the awesome work!

  121. Fresh install of LinuxMint18 – Cinnamon

gnome-font-viewer works after installation. After applying all updates, the font-viewer doesn’t pop-up anylonger. Can be started from the command-line. (Please fix this issue, has been reported already during beta-testing)

    Systemlog : Jul 4 12:27:59 bdc-vb-lm18 org.gnome.font-viewer[1556]: Onbekende optie –gapplication-service
Jul 4 12:27:59 bdc-vb-lm18 org.gnome.font-viewer[1556]: Voer ‘/usr/bin/gnome-font-viewer –help’ uit om een volledige lijst met mogelijke opties voor de opdrachtregel te zien.

  122. Fantastic OS, installed on my 8 year old laptop with a Core2Duo 2.4Ghz processor, 4gb Ram, & 250gb HDD, runs flawlessly.
Only little hiccup I had was prior to installation when I tried to connect to the wi-fi. Entered password, it tried to connect, failed, & then the router vanished from the list of available connections until I disabled & then re-enabled the wi-fi. This also caused all of the devices that were connected to the router to disconnect, which I was equally impressed & bemused by? Worked fine at second time of asking though. Oh & GRUB appeared randomly during Boot once but I don’t dual boot on this system.

  123. I still have wifi issues with LM 18 Cinnamon USB stick on a desktop PCI based adapter with an Atheros AR922X chipset. The adapter is a D-Link DWA-552 Rev A2.
The network is “seen” OK but when trying to connect cannot authorize. The password if checked appears to be corrupt – upper case letters replace lower case. Often the network disappears from the list of available ones when an attempt is made to connect.
This desktop works perfectly with LM 17.3.
A second desktop using a PCI-e based Atheros AR 9287 chipset works fine with LM 18.

  124. Been running the Beta since it came out with zero problems but no Level 1 updates and the icons for Administration and Preferences under Menu are completely different to the ones showing in the screenshot at the top of this page. I haven’t changed theme but my icons are just as they were in Mint 17.3. Anyone else notice this?

  125. Wi-Fi issues as well on a Dell Inspiron 15.
While running the OS from a live USB, I key in the password to the WiFi
but after 10 seconds it gets disconnected. The same thing happens every
few seconds or so. I don’t know if it runs OK on an installed system, though.

  126. July 4, 2016

Downloaded and installed Linux Mint 8 Sarah Cinnamon 64-bit. Just great! You keep improving. I showed appreciation by making a donation. What you could make if you sold distribution commercially! Suggestion. Sarah came out about the same time as Fedora 24. I noticed that Fedora 24 solved the troublesome wireless connect for Ubuntu related software users, particularly troublesome for Lenovo users. Also, I noticed in Fedora 24 an immediate connect with scanner using Simple Scan, whereas Sarah’s repository for drivers shows a non-existent connect with my scanner??? Nevertheless, possible catch-ups do not discourage from using Linux Mint 8 Sarah, which I intend to do!

  130. please how do i get the know which download link is best for download…

This is because some download links gives a horrible iso file

  131. About my previous comment #104 (Analog Output Device issue) : solved !

I have a 7.1 audio card, and my speakers were plug in “CS-Out”… it’s normaly for a center or subwoofer line out, but it was working fine with Mint 17.x…

I plug them into “Line Out”, and then I can see and use “Sortie ligne” (Line out) device : hourra !!

Very trivial solution, but it’s now working fine !

  134. Not ready yet as least as far as my one production machine is concerned. Besides strange errors after install and accessibility showing up after log in, there was a catastrophic meltdown over EFI. I could not get v18 to work as it kept saying it could not find an acpi screen. It worked fine for about a day after what I thought were minor glitches and they seemed solved by a reinstall. Then today the ACPI problem. I could not get the boot to work at all. I rolled back to v17.3 and I think I will wait for a point release or simply monitor the net to see if others have had these challenges and if there was a response to it. Seems I may have to hit the upgrade path when the coast is clear. The ISO I downloaded this week of the release does not seem ready for prime time.

  135. Found out a “clean install” is always better. A fresh start. On a HP notebook you have to disable the “secure boot” in BIOS before the installation. The installation of Mint 18 says it would guide trough this but that did not happen. That’s why my first installation stopped, and why the wifi couldn’t work in Ubuntu 16.04 and in Mint 18. Now the wifi works. Thank you. I’ll put my pictures and documents back from een external memory.

  136. God darn, Clem. Linux Mint 18 rocks good! I’ve installed the Cinnamon edition and installed the MATE desktop environment on it to play my games on Steam. I haven’t experienced a single problem yet and it works super good.
Also, the Cinnamon desktop environment is beautiful. The effects, the ending… everything, it looks neat!

Thank you for all your efforts, minty team! Greetings from Argentina. Keep sharing!

P.S.: The new Mint-Y theme is the bomb!

  137. Hello, I’m using Linux Mint 18 Beta Cinnamon, I’m still not getting the upgrade to the Stable version, does the time of upgrade depends on the country I’m at?

  138. I’m a Linux newbie, yesterday I installed Zorin on an ancient Dell Latitude XP, and LXLE on an ASUS Netbook XP. These old machines were so much faster, and performed like brand new devices running Linux!

I decided to try Linux Mint on my Core i7 RPG, I now seriously LOVE Linux, amazed by how seamless the Linuz Mint install was once I gave up on the USB method, and burned the ISO to DVD. Install was flawless from the DVD I burned thanks to your instructions.

All drivers function better on Linux than on widows, stunning!
As an older(68)geek, I love modifying Android devices, been using windows since 1995, enjoyed Android ROM rooting, ROM flashing,
Just installed your shockingly superb Linux Mint Cinnamon on my older Asus RPG G51Jseries laptop, Core i7, 4GB Ram, VGA nVIDIA GeForce GTX260M; VRAM 1GB,OS was windows 7, upgraded to 8, then windows 10.
This experience has been the BEST thing EVER, I enjoy using my laptops again, may covert ALL my windows toys to Linux!

I am still transfixed by this Linux OS, you have revived my tech love!

  139. Thank you for all the work. Thinking of donating to help out.

I am so excited, please keep working on Mint-Xfce. I’m going crazy waiting for it!!

    Thank you,

    Chris.

  140. I did load up the beta but I ran into troubles, so I thought to myself, I did promise to ever try a beta version again as I am only just computer savvy, so I waited and when distrowatch put up the new V18 I downloaded, that was on the previous Friday, I then spent the weekend trying to load the stable version and there were iso’s burnt to disc and frustration and by Monday morning I had given up, I went back to 17.3. I have been using the Linux mint for a number of years and at no time have I had this type trouble, and thinking it might be a newly bit od hardware trouble I tried on both the desktop and the laptop, both using the I5 and as usual it was a clean install, oh well, I will download from this site and try again, I refuse to be bowed by a faulty download, I just know that sooner or later I will succeed, so apart from the whinging I do owe my heart felt thanks to Clem and team, and I do donate for the service provided

  141. Upgrading from 17.X to 18: Since one can always reformat the disk and install a fresh copy of Mint if things get screwed up, why not provide an upgrade path WITHOUT a fresh install? The last 10 upgrades I did this way in (L)Ubuntu went without a hitch, and it would be nice to have that option to those who do not want to (or cannot) back up their voluminous data, which is required for a fresh install.

  142. Will I get the update via update manager or I need to download the ISO image and install? If via update manager, when will I get it. Just check the update manager, it is not there for update.

  143. Bug : mint backuptool closes without any error after i select destination folder in software selection. i reinstalled mint backuptool but again same problem .

    please fix this.

  144. Ubuntu 16.04.1 will come out in about three weeks and I think that much better idea was to release betas for all 4 flavors and then to wait July 21st for 16.04.1 to release LM 18. Ubuntu 16.04.1 comes with the same kernel but it will bring more updates. Releasing LM 18 with these changes would make life easier for people that like to update the whole system. Every time I tried to do that after Ubuntu 14.04.x was released, I had the same problem because it is not so easy for the beginners to react on a few popup windows, and one bad move and your system is destroyed. Ubuntu 16.04.1 will also let users to update to the newer version of the kernel that will be in the repository after the next point releases. This is on the other hand not true for 16.04.

  145. I’ve installed Mint 18 yesterday, and in general I’m very pleased with the looks and feels, but… sadly, it won’t detect my HDMI TV (and it freezes when I try to do some configuration at screen’s options.

Unfortunately I would have to reinstall Mint 17.3, since HDMI is a thing I use a lot!!!

  146. A keen Mint follower and very impressed with Clem’s long association with Mint development.

    Now..
Network driver bug. Wifi does not function. Connect wired but still no access to WiFi.
Had same problem with Fedora update and only cure was to re-install.
Hope I don’t have to do all that again for Mint 18.
Also blue face problem has to be removed each update.
Opera 12.16 browser is my favorite browser. Would like to see it as an option in the synaptic box.

Thanks for all the effort – RickCG

  148. Mint 18 does not seem to like being disconnected from the internet.
When I boot my 2007 MacBook disconnected from the internet, the cpu load climbs higher and higher with no end (over 20.0!) over several minutes.
    That is clearly not useable.

This is Mint 18 Cinnamon 64bit on a 2007 MacBook with a Core 2 Duo & 4GB of RAM. Wifi turned off.

  149. Hi Clem,

Font Viewer still doesn’t work after doing this:
    1. Clean install and reboot system
    2. Open font viewer and loads successfully
    3. Update system via update manager
    4. Restart system
    5. Open font viewer and nothing happens. The program won’t show up.

  150. When I open update manager and click view, then kernels, it list four kernels with “installed”(4.4.0-21) by one of them. If I remember correctly, in Mint 17.3 the correct kernel to use had “recommended” by it. Will this feature be added to Mint 18 so we will know if we are using the correct (recommended) kernel?

  151. Clem and Team you have outdone yourself again!! The look of Sara Cinnamon is so outstandingly professional; I can’t wait to show it off!

  152. I’ve tested this out, and it is absolutely wonderful! I can’t wait for the upgrade path from 17.3 (the version that I’m using to write this comment)!

  153. Hello there and thank you for the awesome release. I just wanted to point out that there is still a bug with the bootloader grub/ plymouth and nvidia drivers. It seems that once a person enables any nvidia drivers the screen goes blank for boot and doesn’t display the picture or the area to type in if using a boot up password. There used to be a work around for this by adding GFX_PAYLOAD_LINUX=”auto” to the grub file in /etc/default/grub, however upon this release and adding this line to grub it makes the system totally unusable. It shows the screens properly but will not allow the user to type in the password to unlock the drives. One must then reboot hold shift and select recovery mode, and then continue with the boot process as this will ask you to type in your password and you will be able to type again.

Just thought I would update you on the fact that this bug is still present and I’m not sure how else to explain it. I thank you again for this awesome release and hope that any questions about this bug or if this bug has already been addressed and is being fixed will be relayed to me. Thank you again.

  154. Hello Clem and everyone else using and contributing to Linux Mint!

Just installed and configured the hell out of Linux Mint Cinnamon 18 and here are some (lots of) thoughts:

    1) Font Viewer not opening at all

    2) Steam only opens with an adjusted version of the woraround posted by others… at least on my PC the “/usr/$LIB/…” path doesn’t work from terminal… had to find the “libstdc++.so.6″ file and make a full path reference: LD_PRELOAD=”/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6” DISPLAY=:0 steam

    3) Text editor coloring for bash code has bad contrast on dark background on Mint-Y Dark Theme (it uses the same dark colors as when using a light/white background color) so on next version of this x-app it could have more than one set of special text colors, one for light themes and one for dark themes (i noticed it already changes the basic text color from black to white under the dark theme)

    4) On “Files” when enabling “show text in icons” with the Mint-Y Dark Theme enabled, it probably uses a white font on a white icon, because no text seems to be shown on text files

    5) On “Files”, the “/” root folder insists on showing smaller icons under “Icon View” than the default and then what is used on other folders being viewed right before it, even though I’ve enabled “ignore per-folder view preferences”… this happens from time to time, not always, and after adjusting zoom level it shows the right one after exiting and re-entering this folder path (even after closing the “Files” app)… I believe it happens again always after restarting the OS, but not sure

    6) “Calculator”, “Disks” and some other apps are showing their “GNOMEness”… Its not that bad really, buttons and droplists over the titlebar are incoherent with the rest of the apps but easy enough to understand and interact with, themes seem to play well with it (default and Mint-Y Dark at least).

    7) On “Update Manager” and “Software Sources”, had several official repository mirrors (for mint and for ubuntu) with that hash sum mismatch error, why does this keep happening?! I’m no IT person, so I don’t understand well what’s involved but it seems important that mirrors don’t serve corrupted files so often, right (affected mirrors include more than one from brasil and even from US, but I forgot to take a note of which ones)

    8) On “Software Sources”, place a column for the mint and ubuntu update mirror server addresses beside the new resolved name (or under it, or on a tag, but as a column it can be used for ordering the list…). I feel the URL is important in some instances, easier to verify and to check for on a web browser or search engine if/when issues (or curiosity) arise

    9) Show “Cinnamon Menu Editor” on the “Preferences” menu by default instead of hiding it.

    10) Cinnamon Menu Editor has performance issues (they were already present on Cinnamon 17.2 and 17.3, not just on LM Cinnamon 18) and duplication issues when copying and pasting menu items between menus. I like placing “Text Editor” and “Tomboy Notes” under “Office”, “Screenshot” under “Images” and showing Steam only under “Games”, for example. The lags have improved from 17.2/17.3 to 18 but the duplication of the item on the original folder when pasting on a new one is there yet and some lagging when performing these changes still happens but less often and less intense.

    11) The Cinnamon Menu layout could be improved a little (at least under Mint-Y Dark) if the width of the bar around the left side shortcuts for favorite apps, “lock screen”, “logout” and “quit” was not so wide. At least on my 1920×1080 monitor it seems disproportionate… should have the same padding on vertical and horizontal axis around the square icons (preferably reducing the horizontal padding to be equal the vertical one, thus not making square icons in wide rectangular highlighted buttons… really just aesthetics, but its Mint Cinnamon so every detail that makes it even more beautifull counts 🙂

    12) On “Software Manager”, when viewing the screenshots for an app, it could have an easy way to go to the next/previous image without going back to the app description page first (tall and thin buttons on the right and left of the image is what I have in mind)

    13) On “Software Manager”, some keyboard shortcuts for navigation could be used, preferably using the same convention for back (alt+left directional), forward (alt+right directional) and up one level (backspace) as on “Files” and/or internet browsers, left and right directionals to flip through the screenshots and esc to go back to the app description, …

    14) On the “Network Manager” applet (and/or on “Network Settings” and “Network Connections” the wired connection could show the interface name (I’ve noticed the new naming convention eth0 >> enp5s0)

    15) Is there any performance optimization reason for not showing any king of network stats on the “Network Manager” applet? If possible, it would be nice to have basic stats such as download and upload speeds and total data, local/public IP… an embeded download speed graph would be great, but this I can imagine would have some toll on performance and battery autonomy, right? These improvements could be made available as an alternative more robust applet on the “Applets” window, just not added to the main panel by default.

    16) On the Mint-X theme the green highlight for the button currently under keyboard focus is very, very, very little faintly different from the non highlighted buttons, for example on OK/CANCEL dialog windows so its hard to know for sure what button you’re about to press when using a keyboard in stead of a mouse… on Mint-Y Dark its easier to see the gray rectangle, so no need to change this on this new theme… have not tested Mint-Y Light and Mint-Y Darker yet (loved the dark theme despite the text contrast issues sometimes)

Phew… more coming some other day after more testing, but I can say I loved Mint 18 already 🙂

Keep up the great work! You people are incredible!

    Best Regards
    Paulo Villi

PS: X-Apps are coming up great! Glad you took it upon you!

  156. Hey there good job on Linux Mint 18 release. I’m facing two problems.
First is sound problems, my pc doesn’t seem to recognize any output now, so amplification is low on speakers, my volume buttons on my keyboard don’t do anything, I don’t see any sound icon on system tray and pulseaudio eq doesn’t do it’s job.
Second I have some problems with the colors on the dark theme, especially in libreoffice.
    Thank you

  157. Pity this release! Just a lot of regressions comparing to 17.3

Partly a consequence of flaws in Ubuntu 16.04. Mint-X theme is degenerating piece by piece.

Cannot find any benefit in using this version and I will not install it on the computers I maintain.

    Just my opinion.

  158. Font viewer not working! even on this release!

  159. That SAMBA is not somehow working in 18 are very much a downer :(.

Is there a possible timeline for getting SAMBA working in 18, eventueally 18.1?

Until I am getting news about SAMBA and as I can read way too many bugs – even in the released version, I stay using 17.3. I understand it is based Ubuntu 16.04 LTS – including their bugs…eg

    Regards

    John

  160. It takes me over 2 hours to download the codecs ! It shows time remaining as 140+ minutes !
I am on a slow connection.

Why not have a version which includes the codecs back?

I understand it is a one time activity, but I use Linux on Virtualbox for creating Tomcat servers and deploying Java apps. And also use VLC when in full screen mode. I often delete VMs and recreate them.

  161. I have not tested the new release so far and there is one thing irritating me: Why is the new signing key not signed by the old signing key? This way, you could trust the new key and the verified image without having to trust the web server (which, as we all know, has been compromised before). If I have once established trust via PGP I prefer to maintain the trust for PGP keys via Web of Trust, instead of relying on external verification.

Another great move would be to expand your Web of Trust. At the time of writing this, all the signatures on the new ISO signing key are from keys which have no signatures themselves and it is unclear whether they have even properly checked the identity of the ISO signing key.

It would be preferable if senior members of the Mint community would actively care for PGP keys with a strong Web of Trust (ideally reaching into the WoT of other Linux distributions and major free software projects). All those should then sign the ISO signing key (as one can assume that they have been informed about the fingerprint via a secure, verified channel).

Please, continue your great work on usability and but make it even better by improving security as well. Mint cannot survive another severe security breach: Webservers will be compromised, individual keys might get compromised, software packages will have security bugs, but a distributed trust infrastructure will hold.

Edit by Clem: Hi Sebastian, good point. We’ll sign the new keys with each other and with the older one.

  162. Strange, it said 140 minutes remaining but downloaded it in half an hour.

Including usable software right out of the box was what made Mint preferred over other distros. It helped users like me whose primary OS is not Linux. It took away a lot of pain.

It is not a major concern in my case – I can use VLC in the host anyway, though it requires switching between VM and host. It always feels good to use a Linux version which has all the required parts, and also extra bells and whistles.

    Great release. Thanks.
    All the best.

  163. Hello everybody: i really want to say THANK YOU so MUCH for being a great Team of this promise you made real every 6 month with hard work!! I just waiting for upgrade from 17.3, when you say done for i will do thank you so much again!!

  164. * LM18 Cinnamon 64 bits * Fresh install *

    1) About the Font Viewer not working, as already stated above by other users, in fact it does not launch from Cinnamon Menu, but it works if we call it in a terminal: gnome-font-viewer

    2) The “VMware Workstation Player 12” menus were working properly under LM17.x but not under LM18. Now the only menu I see is ‘File’. The other menus are still available but they are not visible until you hover your mouse over them.

  165. Clem:

i need samba to to my backups, i installed samba but my backup program some how did not reached the samba folder, i manage to do it using different way… but… i guess it would be the time to implement a linuxmint tweak tool, so in a simple stop we can click to fine-tune samba, codecs and all the stuff that for some reason could not be necesary for all the users, but… on the other hand make linux mint still, the out of the box linux that has been

  166. Coming back with some feedback. I typed alsamixer in Terminal and was able to increase the sound level, but I still don’t get sound icon on system tray and my sound device isn’t recognized in the sound settings although alsamixer would recognize it right.

  167. LM 18 Cinnamon. I tried beta and stable install on a Gigabyte BRIX J1900 with HDMI TV monitor. Installs OK and display OK but after a while the system just freezes. Ubuntu 16.04 does the same so I am staying with LMDE Betsy. Also – does LM 18 run “out of the box” on a mintbox mini?

  168. Having driver issues with an MSI AMD FX 970 gaming board. Can’t get the Athros Killer E2200 Nic to work. Also the USB ports did not work until I had found a hack for it. With the Nic not working I attempted to use a Netgear N300 usb wifi adapter for networking but *sigh* Mint 18 does not see that either, even after I got the USB ports to work. I’m assume that the kernal needs to be recompiled with these drivers but thats out of my league.

    Being informative not whining 🙂

  169. Great release!

I have only encountered two things, and one is not new:

    1. Font viewer, as mentioned further up, does not start now.

    2. Could the Mint-X theme be modified to allow programs to change the button color? Many programs use this for option highlighting ( gElemental is an extreme example ).

These are rather minor ( to me ). The OS as a whole has ran wonderfully. Thank you to all involved.

  170. When I have started numlock with numolckx at logon screen the NumLock led is turned off sometimes after logon, however num keys are working.

  171. Fontviewer not showing up has also its effect on Nemo: Can’t install fonts by just clicking on the fonts-file.

  172. Clock doesn’t keep time correctly. Can set it correctly by turning network time off and back on, but next day, time is 4 hours off again.

  173. Headphones amplification is low, sound quality is bad, you can not set sample rate and bit depth, sound is heard simultaneously in speakers and headphones, Sound settings available may not be called sound settings – Volum and Left – Right.

  174. @clem:

for some reason i lost the nemo changing folder color propertie… is it something i did? (i have not changed nothing, yesterday it was there)

  175. I can see that my information about installing kernel 4.6.3 are deleted by moderator?!

By what reason? it skould be number 228 above,,??

  176. @Hiperkulet (post No. 210)
I had the same issue (more or less) with Font Viewer. I resolved it finally by deleting the Font Viewer entry in Menu Editor and recreating it manually. Put in the following:
    Name: Font Viewer
    Command: gnome-font-viewer %u
Comment: View fonts on your system
    Icon: /usr/share/icons/Mint-X/apps/96/preferences-desktop-font.svg

  177. On Lumia 640 I am not able to open pictures from SD Card using XViewer, however Imagemagic or Pix opens it.

Btw guys, excellent work! Finally Linux distro which fits all my requirements.

  178. oh well, a couple of daze later and nobody seemed to give a rats, I will make another observation. When I installed the beta version I noticed the same issues there but because the issues were so noticeable I did not feel there needed to be another voice pointing obvious trouble points, especially when you notice that the word process could not point out bad spelling, so the you think, okay, maybe it is an issue that was very noticeable in earlier versions and there was the need to go into the terminal and put in the command ‘sudo apt-get install myspell-en-au’ and that would correct the problem, so I think well maybe i need to return to that and then i find out that nothing is as it seems,I can put the command in but when it asks for the password, well gee golly whizbangs, the terminal will not allow the password to be inserted, not by copy and paste, not through the keyboard, oh well, this is really wearing my patience down to a little nubbin, maybe i will try the Mate version, not a favourite shell, or maybe the Xfce version, I live in hope that somewhere, somehow there is a stable version out in the wild
    thanks for your attention

  179. Problem with openvpn connection icon
When connected to any openvpn through the network manager applet the icon does not change to locked. Ok on pptp connections.

When I disconnect from any vpn connection, openvpn or pptp, I get:
message box saying “vpn connection failed” “the vpn connection ‘—-‘ disconnected”

    Same problems on two systems.

Tested on ubuntu 16.4 cinnamon and it had the same faults.

Anything you can do about it?

  180. Hi!
    I have problems:
    1. Checkbox doesn’t view on any windows, but if click to place when checkbox must be it has been checked
    2. i was installed virtualbox-5.0 on mint 17.3 and it worked but on mint 18 it doesn’t work, when i reinstall:

virtualbox-5.0 is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required

  181. @238 Ross Weigand:
… oh well, this is really wearing my patience down to a little nubbin,…

Linux Mint 17.3 is stable and great. (I use LM 17 on my main laptop for studying and I don’t have any compelling reason to upgrade it).

I’m sure that the Linux Mint team is doing the best for all of us, and that eventually we all going to have the best OS as usual – only this time it’s harder and takes longer time to debug. But what’s the rush?

This early release of Linux Mint 18 is very important, since it allows the team to get feedback from the users and to start the debugging process on time.
Let’s continue to support them in this great effort; The team is small and the budget is small as well.

  182. There seem to be some minor problems with nemo:

    1. In case you have set Settings->Themes->Symbols to a Mint-X choice, you can change the colors of some selected folders within nemo.
However, if you change Settings->Themes->Symbols to hicolor afterwards, not all icons are set to the hicolor appearance.
Those having changed their colors when Mint-X was valid keep their changed colors even in the new hicolor setting.
But then, it is not possible to delete the specially selected color as the context menu extension for selection of folder colors appears in the Mint-X setting only.
I think, this behaviour of nemo is not intended.
If you switch Settings->Themes->Symbols to hicolor, the special folder colors selected within Mint-X should not appear any longer.
By the way, the same is true for LM17.3.

    2. Moreover, the nemo option Settings->Preview->Text-Files->Show-Text-in-Symbols does not work at all in LM18.
(In LM17.3 the option does not work with symbols set to hicolor but it works with symbols set to Mint-X.)
This affects only text files which have a separate option setting, for other multimedia files it works (both in LM18 and 17.3).

    Good luck
    Tom

  183. a very annoying bug under lm18 64bit cinnamon mint-y & nemo:

in dual pane mode, the name of the places to the left is covered, so on every start manual resizing is needed in order to see the them.

a fix would be very welcome.

  184. Cinnamon 64-bit, Lenovo Z580 & HP CQ-61

Thanks for all your efforts. I’ve noticed a minor annoyance when ejecting a USB drive. If you click on the drive icon in the system tray and eject it from there, nothing happens to acknowledge that it was successfully unplugged (except if it’s the only one plugged in the icon will go away, but not if multiple drives are in). However, if you click the button in Nemo to unmount it, a pop-up appears in the upper right corner (as expected) and then a notification also appears in the system tray (even if you’ve already removed the drive) which must be acknowledged separately. Also, if you unsuccessfully try to eject a drive that has an open file from the system tray and then close the program that had the file open, the drive is then automatically unmounted with no notification.

As I said , this is only a minor annoyance, but you’re going for elegance here. It would be nice if both methods resulted in feedback between these two poles. Maybe something for the point release?

  185. Is it possible to upgrade from 17 to 18 by just changing repo names and urls? Anyone tried that ?

  186. Intel NUC DN28020FYKH
Install a fresh Mint18 ans started using Jabra Wireless (BT) head phones, but Youtube videos become skippy and stops playing in Chrome, while audio continues on. Otherwise it drops the audio altogether and the video continues on.

It’s only the BT that I’m having trouble with. Frustrating as Mint 17 worked fine.

    Please help.

  187. Dear Sirs,
Knowing the software is for free there is not much reason to complain.
However it should be noted that this OS is more of an experimental one. E.G. Once you removed items from your task bar, they are gone. Forever.
No proper way of re-installing it to the default. I guess for computer insiders this OS is fine, but for general public? No way.

  188. today’s design is flat icons etc…..why 18 sarah still use 3d icons which is out of time already.
can we make it flat in the next release please
or can i change it now somehow?
    thanks

  189. Yeah….i got every thing up and running no problems at all. But am about to download virtualbox on my system, i can’t really decide which to download. my OS = Linux mint-18-cinnamon64bit amd64, please help.

  190. My 17.3 Rosa worked great and 18 Sarah cinnamon is working perfectly also. All Photography, music, docks, editor, and various other applications are working very well. I am very pleased after forced upgrade to Windows 10 finally destroyed my old computer and got me off the Microsoft expensive B.S. treadmill. I have played with Linux distro’s for years but this seems to be really on track. I do not do any wine or any other gaming windows garbage on clean Linux machines due to past experience. So far 18 Sarah Cinnamon is working stable & very well!

  191. Hello. Is there one problem with Cinnamon 3. It often break down, and only service mdm restart works.

  192. Worked fine for me. Upgraded my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop from 17.3 to 18 while 18 was still in beta. The only problem was that it missed my internal wireless card, but installing the driver fixed that. After 18 went final, I upgraded on my desktop, an AMD Athlon X4 870K system running on an ASUS A88X-Pro. It worked perfectly on that machine, even properly recognizing my pcHDTV HD-5500 TV tuner card right out of the box (17.3 had some issues with it). I was concerned about issues on this AMD APU platform with some unusual hardware, like that TV tuner and the PCIe parallel port card, but Sarah aced it all right out the box.

  193. I installed Mint 18 last night; so far so good for the most part but I notice that many 32 bit packages don’t seem to be searchable/installable via the Software Manager or Synaptic (although they can still be searched for & installed using the terminal).

  194. Thank you for evolving Linux Mint Distribution.

I upgraded from 17.3 by performing a “fresh” upgrade similar to Clems instructions (“https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2”).

    Issues so far:
Can’t set default application for “.exe” (application/x-ms-dos-executable) files to “mono”. Application loads when choosing “Open with/Mono Runtime” from files context menu. “mono” is not available from the list and can neither be added to it nor be set as default when choosing “Open with/other” even if pointing to “/usr/bin/mono”.

    Kind regards
    Markus

  195. No sound in my mini
    Samsung N100SP

Good distro, but have sound on earphone but not in speakers. Speakers working perfectly in windows
    Realtek ALC269VC
    Help somebody.

  196. @Clem –

I can also confirm that the Font Viewer does not open from the Menu and when you open it from the terminal, there is no install font ability as there used to be. And I can also confirm that font installation by clicking on the font file no longer works.

Also, after many years using and testing Mint versions (almost since the beginning), I have to say that completely removing Samba from the installation without providing a simple automatic way to install Samba (via Nemo for example) and all it’s dependencies or at least providing a simple tutorial that a user can use to do the same thing was not the correct decision.

As a comparison, codecs installation was removed from the Mint 18 image (fine, no problem) but more than one way was provided for the user to easily install them. The same thing should have been provided for Samba.

    Otherwise, a fine release!

  197. @246. Sofia Smith:
…Recomends NOT INSTALL LINUX MINT 18 CINNAMON AND NOT UPGRADE LINUX 17 TO 18.

Linux Mint 18 is using a different base then Linux Mint 17.

The person who wrote the review on http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/linux-mint-sarah.html should not upgrade to Linux Mint 18 on his own hardware. That’s all.

Other users can download the ISO, burn it to DVD (or USB stick), then run the live session to see if Linux Mint 18 supports their hardware. – If your hardware is supported, then it’s OK to do fresh install of Linux Mint 18 (don’t forget to backup your data first).

There is no version of any operation system (Linux, Windows, etc) that works on any hardware.

  199. @Shian (251) and @ Sofia Smith (246) – Dedoimedo uses a laptop for testing various distros that has hardware that is known for not working with some distros, Ubuntu and Ubuntu based distros especially. Mostly it’s the Realtek network hardware in his laptop that causes problems (Realtek’s fault and their lousy Linux drivers–long standing bug). It’s also clear that Dedoimedo didn’t bother reading the announcement, release notes or the what’s new in 18 posts. if he had, he would have known that codecs and samba were pulled from the installation media.

As a comparison, Dedoimedo recently wrote an article about CentOS KDE installation, etc, where he went through a whole plethora of terminal tweaks in order to get the OS operating correctly without much of a complaint.

Here’s another review of Mint 18/Cinnamon that shows a whole different opinion from Dedoimedo’s:

    http://www.hecticgeek.com/2016/07/linux-mint-18-review/

Like you said, Shian, there’s no OS in existence that works on every single system.

  200. Possible Bug: When waking up from suspend, the Context menus from a mouse right-click on the panel do not close when clicking elsewhere on the screen. To recreate the issue: 1) send PC to suspend; 2) move the mouse to where the panel is; 3) right-click. Expected behavior: once the PC wakes up, the right-click context menu should disappear when clicking the mouse else where on the screen. Actual behavior: the context menu remains displayed (the menu itself is inactive, so it seems Cinnamon is not refreshing the screen).

To get rid off the menu, one has to find which item on the panel was right-clicked during the wake up, and do another right-click.

This does not apply only when waking up from suspend, but the suspend way is the easiest to recreate the problem.

  201. Hey team Mint,
just wanted to write some feedback. I was forced to downgrade back to 17.3 to some annoyances:

    1. the system would not go to sleep when set to do so
    2. manually triggering sleep takes far longer than with 17.3 (about 15s)
    3. could not set up OpenVPN through importing a config file.
    4. hiding bookmarks in the menu applet creates a blank space and does not move the rest of the contect accordingly
    5. when plugged or unplugged it takes considerable time until the change is reflected in the power management (a minute or so)

Sorry but I had no time to spend more time on the bugs. I had to go back to working system fast. Hope it helps at least a little.

  202. Regarding issue 1 from comment 217 (Paulo Villi)

It is true that Font Viewer cannot be started from Menu -> Acessories -> Font Viewer.
Checked the system.log and found these 2 lines referring to unsuccessful Font Viewer starting:

    ———————-
    Unknown option –gapplication-service
Run ‘/usr/bin/gnome-font-viewer –help’ to see a full list of available command line options.
    ———————-

However, when opening a terminal window and typing
gnome-font-viewer the program starts normally (but the Window borders remain as Mint-X no matter what other selection is made)

Looking to the amount of issues it seems that LM18 was prematurely released. We have to stay on LM17.3 till these issues will be solved.

  203. I seem to be quite good a breaking Sarah. EFI problems still exist but those crazy things that were happening before not so much. I simply did not preserve my data, as I have the main stuff backed up elsewhere. This apparently allowed EFI to be put on this system a Gateway all in one. I noticed by trial and error the same problem with Ubiquity installing Ubuntu 16.04. If I try to make partitions, it just does not go well. I can make them after. So I went for an ounce of prevention and tried to back up using partition magic, specifically redo – backing up to another partition. I have done that very successfully before with 17+ versions. I also have been able to change Plymouth screens. Both caused grub failures. Ideally I would like to back up the OS but I suppose not breaking it will have to do, along with keeping my ear to the ground on what is going on with it.

  204. Hi,

Nemo don’t save display settings when connected in root.

A question: what is the path to the boot and shutdown logo ?

    Regards

  205. I installed 17.3 in a VM & took some screenshots showing the issue with 32 bit packages. Here are the results when searching for “libsdl2” in Mint 17.3: http://imgur.com/ERlt6GP

    And in Mint 18: http://imgur.com/HPjoLOp

The 32 bit packages are not visible at all in either the Software Manager or Synaptic, although I can still find and install them using apt search, apt-get etc.

Also some more things to report:

    – GUFW still uses overlay scroll bars even though I have them disabled

    – The launcher menu was sometimes closing immediately after opening. After looking at this more closely, it looks like this happens if the mouse cursor isn’t directly over either the menu button or the menu itself when the menu opens.

It looks like it’s registering a second click after the menu opens, because if I move the mouse quickly enough over the menu as it’s opening I can cause it to immediately open items from the menu.

I also have the issue with the keyboard numlock LED not being lit when numlock is enabled at logon

  206. Hi Mint Team! Just leaving here a comment to thank you the hard work creating the most wonderful linux distro ever done, I am enjoying a lot the new Sarah release, awesome. Thank you!

  207. Font Viewer issue can be easily solved by editing the “org.gnome.font-viewer.desktop” file (/usr/share/applications/) and erasing the “DBusActivatable=true” line.

  208. @Derek 261

It’s actually easily done. You can right click a panel, troubleshoot, Restore all settings to default. Or you can use the applet tool to re-add any missing applets one at a time.

    @dony 262

The new mint-Y icons are of the flat type you are looking for. Just use the theme tool in the settings

  209. When will you release the KDE version of this? KDE has always been my choice of all X. Been around since the first Debian was released decades ago and want an application that ACTUALLY upgrades my system. If that stupid microsoft winblows can do it. I know you guys can. Your far better than that BS corp.

  210. Hi All,
    I have a Dell XPS 15 9550 with DA200.

With Ubuntu 16.04 (kernel 4.4.0-28-generic), I got both external monitors to work fine, however, with Mint 18 (kernel 4.4.0.21-generic) I can only get one external monitor working (the one that doesn’t work is the one connected via the DA200. Also, Ethernet doesn’t work through the DA200 whereas it did for Ubuntu 16.04)
I have installed the nvidia drivers.

Apart from that, it’s looking great!

  211. update on 285.
I updated mint to 4.4.0-28-generic. Second monitor still not working/stable. I also tried with Intel GPU.

    Any thoughts welcome 🙂

  212. Cinnamon 18 running smooth but some apps like font viewer doesnt open. Backuptool shuts down automatically if i choose backup for software selection. also cinnamon is little heavy on ram. my pc goes to 1.3 gb RAM when i open firefox and thunderbird.

i am excited and waiting for KDE plasma. i tried antergos kde and manjaro kde but when i switch tabs and both kde distro sometimes gives me pc freeze and i had no choice but to restart my pc. may be its kernel problem.

looking forward to try mint kde 18 coming release. i hope its based on latest kde 5.6 + plasma . hope it will be stable and no freezes.

  213. update to #270

Restoring “Software Selection” might be the source of my problems with “mono”. I restarted from scratch without restoring “Software Selection”. No more issues with “mono”.
Maybe compatibility issues? Maybe Clems instructions need some work.

  214. Hello!
    My system:
    Notebook asus g750hj
    i7-4700hq
    nvidia geforce 780m
    Linux mint 18 cinnamon
    Vanilla kernel
driver nvidia-361.42-0ubuntu2(recommend) – causes flickering on the display. black screen when first booting. After the second restart of the third – the system is booted.
driver nvidia-340.96-0ubuntu3 – black screen when booting.
driver nvidia-367(from third-party repositories) – All the same ripples on the screen.

Now I sit in the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau(free) 1:1.0.12-1build2 and there is no screen flicker and ripple. But I need the proprietary driver.

  215. Hello LinuxMint-Team,

I am a newbee in LinuxMint,
I’m testing at the moment 17.3 Cinnamon.

Now I saw version 18 appearing and loaded down the files.

I entered the page where you are explaining how to check file-integrity.

When trying to check file-integrity, I had the following problem:

    Action to do:
Verify the signature on the sha256sum files with the following command (the output of this command should mention that the signature is “Good”):

    answer from my terminal:

    Unterschrift vom Do 30 Jun 2016 13:13:33 CEST mittels “RSA-Schlüssel ID A25BAE09
    Haupt-Fingerabdruck = 27DE B156 44C6 B3CF 3BD7 D291 300F 846B A25B “AE09

    The check itself is o.k.
but there are doubts, if everything is o.k.
    Do I have spoiled downloads?

    Kind regards
    Thomas

  216. @Clem,

Since there seems to be such a relatively large number of issues surrounding Mint 18 (at least judging from the comments here), would it be possible to backport all of the Mint tools and parts of the new Cinnamon and MATE DE’s? That way we could continue using the rock-solid 17.3 base with the newer interfaces and tools available in Mint 18? At least until Mint 18 issues get sorted out?

  217. in right click desktop screen under >> create new document.we need to add so more menu.
    for ex:
    create new spreadsheet,
    create new word doc
    create new presentation
    create new drawing
    create new maths

in mint i can only see create new document >> text document. please add above options too.

  218. I had LM 18 Cinnamon x64 on my Acer ES1-311 for a week but it broke successively, it comes to freezes more often and the system got unstable more an more. I tested the Mate desktop but not event Mate was running, I couldn’t get the Wifi working.
I switched back to LM 17.3 an everything works perfectly and the system is stable as a mercedes.
I’m a fan of Mint, but version 18 doesn’t work for me in any way.

  219. Samba, I guess it’s bad idea, and it’s not unix way, system shouldn’t tell you which format you have to use, you can create a file and after this do whatever you want with it

  220. so sad there no multimedia codec. now I have to downloaded manually. 🙁
and why no description that is codec not included when about to download.

  221. I won’t upgrade, because the new version of GTK+2 is broken, and noone seems to care, not here, not in ubuntu, not even inside GTK itself. I plan to migrate to LMDE which still has an older and better GTK+2.

  222. A slight correction to my previous posts: it turns out that Synaptic does show the “missing” 32-bit packages, but only if you select “Architecture” and use the all/i386 lists there – they just don’t show up in any of the other lists or if you perform a search. I could’ve sworn that searches at least did include 32-bit packages in prior versions, but I checked in my 17.3 VM and it looks like I was mistaken.

(also Synaptic is another thing that persists in using the overlay scrollbars despite having them disabled)

  223. Hi!
    My system:
    Notebook asus g750hj
    i7-4700hq
    nvidia geforce 780m
    Linux mint 18 cinnamon
    Vanilla kernel
driver nvidia-361.42-0ubuntu2(recommend) – causes flickering on the display. black screen when first booting. After the second restart of the third – the system is booted.

Now I sit in the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau(free) 1:1.0.12-1build2 and there is no screen flicker and ripple. But I need the proprietary driver.

  224. Internal Broadcom network adapter is not recognized in Mint 18 Cinnamon, nor is a proprietary driver provided as was the case in 17.3. Right now I’m connecting using an old external USB card.

  225. Installed 18 in virtual box tonight, noticed a few bugs right away:

    1. Cinnamon is running in “software rendering mode.”

    2. Asked Synaptic to install Supertux. Synaptic installed Supertux2 instead, which is incompatible (runs REALLY slow) with software rendering mode.

    3. Twice tried to install Microsoft ttf package using Synaptic. Libre Office can’t see/use the Microsoft fonts. Where did they go?

    4. I’m using a laptop touchpad, and sometimes Mint ignores my scroll up or down touchpad gesture. It just laughs at me. Same when I try to use the up or down arrows. Or several up/down requests which were queued are executed rapid fire. This is on a web page, with a program open, or various system settings & applet menus. Unresponsiveness might be related to item #1, but needs to be fixed. Sometimes I notice the up/down arrows and scroll cursor at invisible too in certain windows.

    5. Acroread and Armory are not in the repos.

I have not played extensively with themes or other settings, nor will I be able to install Sarah on my primary machine for a while because my primary machine happily running 17.3/Windows 10 must work reliably for me to get work done and get paid, plus it took quite some time to configure everything to work properly on both Mint 17.3 (still has nemo issues though)and W10. But I will continue to experiment with Sarah in the meantime.

    Keep up the great work!

  226. We detect problem with Sarah Cinnamon Running in a VMWare player. Window Manager background colors with error.

  227. Just downloaded Mint 18 Mate on my old Samsung NP-N140 workbook (10 inch display) as I thought this would be easier than waiting to update from Mint 17 (which worked well, if a little laggy – probably due to my old machine).

However, the “Welcome to the Update Manager” screen seems to extend below the bottom of the screen so that I cannot choose the “select” button. Until I can do this I can go no further. All other screen icons, menus etc seem OK.

I have tried another display configuration (and installing Cinnamon instead) but no change. Any suggestions?

    Many thanks

  228. @imnotrich (#306),

#1, 2, and possibly 4 would be likely be solved by installing the VirtualBox Guest Additions drivers on the guest OS. The default Mint install doesn’t contain VirtualBox graphics drivers because it’s such a wildly moving target – every new version of VirtualBox requires new drivers. The Guest Additions package is needed for that.

#3 is an odd one. I’ve not had any trouble installing the Microsoft Fonts on Mint 18. Did it give any specific errors in the terminal while installing?

    #5 is a two-fold problem:

Acroread (the Linux version, anyway) is no-longer being developed by Adobe. It is so far out of date, that the reasons you’d want to install it instead of open source PDF readers have all become obsolete and aren’t all that functional anymore. There are other alternatives (I use qpdfview, personally) that work well. Or, you could install the latest Windows version in WINE, although there are some minor glitches you’ll have to put up with for that.

Armory isn’t in the Ubuntu repos (which the Mint team has no control over), and isn’t widely used enough to warrant being included in the Mint repos. It’s more of a niche thing, so you’re going to have to do a little more work to install it. The Armory web site has Ubuntu/Mint deb files in its download page:

Just download and double-click to install it. It should open in the gdebi installer. Or, you could go to your terminal, navigate to the place you saved the deb file to, and type ‘sudo dpkg -i [exact full name of the deb file]’.

  230. Having some trouble with my Wileyfox Swift phone – I can’t access the SD card. Opening the phone in Nemo only shows entries for “Internal storage” and sometimes “M-m:M-~M-/M-eM-?M-^?M-f^V.M-.”. I encountered no issues like this with 17.3

Also Mint 18 seems to think every text file on my Windows install is executable (at least it has for every text file I’ve tried opening so far)

  231. In the earlier versions of Mint the DEB package icons contained Mint logo and looked really beautiful and distinguishable, now they look as an ordinary archive file. I’m not sure whether this is a bug, but I would like them to look like before.

  232. @ Clem

Small problems with the Mint-Y icons.

Some applets icons in the top are not visible : Caffeine and Weather. In Weather, you can check the option to show monochrome icons, but, you know, it’s monochrome. Caffeine is almost invisible. Original Moka has the same problem.

Also, will you consider the possibility of changing the folders color in the Mint-Y icons theme ? Sorry to say, but I’m not a fan of green. 🙂

    Thanks.

  233. @Mike #307

“The default Mint install doesn’t contain VirtualBox graphics drivers because it’s such a wildly moving target – every new version of VirtualBox requires new drivers. The Guest Additions package is needed for that.”

How did Linux Mint handle it prior to Sarah? This issue was not there in LM 17, It’s only with Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon that it have become an issue. This has been a real issue for a lot of people that need not have happened.

When Virualbox is installed in a system, couldn’t the graphic drivers for that version be also installed at that point, as a dependency?

  234. hi, i just install it last night, the problem is it won’t shutdown.
just hang at the mint logo, what should i do?

    thanks 🙂

  235. I have an Acer Aspire notebooks and installed Mint 18 alongside Windows 10, but the wifi doesn’t work on live-usb nor in the installed version. My notebook doesn’t have RJ-45 port, so the only way to connect is via wifi =(

  236. @Thiago #313
I also had a problem with Qualcomm Atheros 802.11ac and solved my issue cloning GIT rep https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware.git to /lib/firmware/ath10k/. Please check the needed fireware running the command: dmesg | grep ath10k. You will get something like: Direct firmware load for ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/firmware-5.bin failed with error -2. Copy the missing file there and reboot. Problem solved.

  237. I am changing from Windows to Linux 18 Cinnamon. I downloaded the .iso and burned it to a dvd. My problem is that I don’t know how to verify the .iso. According to the instructions for verification, I have to be running Linux in order to verify it. How can I verify it before I install it??? Please help. I can run it off-line from the dvd and I really like it and I really woan to use it. How can I verify it if it isn’t yet installed?

  238. today I update upower. after that I try to open power management and window closes automatically. I reboot the system but same result. window closes and nothing happens. power management does not open.

  239. same problem with comment 321. no power management. “cinnamon-settings power” just got a Segmentation fault

Edit by Clem: Fix coming up.

  240. Same problem with comment 321 and 322 after update no power management when clicking no action.

Edit by Clem: A fix is on the way.

  241. Why Linux Mint KDE is treated as if it were the stepmother? It’s the world’s best Linux

  242. Mike, 320.

Google search found that winmd5sum can be used under Windows; but how do you know if winmd5sum can be trusted.

You could also just install Linux Mint using current image; then verify the .iso image that was used for the installation. If it checks out, your good; else download new iso.

    or,

Copy the iso file to a thumbdrive; live boot Mint from the DVD and check the iso on the thumbdrive.

    or,

From live session, you should be able to mount your Windows partition where the iso is; then you can check the iso file.

    Hope this helps.

  243. Along with all the great new thech improvements…. Thanks for (finally) changing the default wallpaper!!!! 😉

  244. I upgraded from 17.3 via terminal last night. Small warning to anyone who’s about to do this: It takes a LOT longer than a clean install! I got a ton of error messages along the way and just ignored them all. When I rebooted my notebook, Sarah was there! Everything went absolutely smoothly for me, all my settings are still there, my chosen icon set, my screensaver, my wallpaper changer, everything. In fact, everything looks just as it did before. Even the PPAs are backed up, so one can restore them easily. Very nice! Thanks a ton for all the hard work!

  245. Hello Clem,

I was on 17.3, with upgrades from 17.0 to 17.3. It was exciting to see 18.0 released. As usual, I read all the posted comments, and I honestly felt queezy about 18.0 after reading so many “negative” comments posted, specially after reading about the Dell Inspirons as I have 2 of them.

With the stability of 17.x, I put these aside and decided to install it on another machine first: a Samsung Series 7 with a defective screen (I dropped coffee on the screen and it behaves strangely, but still is perfect for heavy duty work). Mint 18.0 worked perfectly on it, with all the gadgets (screen luminosity, keyboard back-light, wireless, sound, etc.) It was then that my queeziness disappeared.

On my main Dell Inspiron, I had rebuild it with 17.3 about a couple months ago because I was not getting the full complement of an upgrade, say 17.2 to 17.3 and the additional screen-savers, but that was minor. I had rebuilt it with 2 partitions, / and /home, to make Mint 18.0 easier without loosing all my configurations (yes, I had backups of that too!)

I did a fresh install, while keeping /home intact. Mint 18.0 came right up: works flawlessly with all my Cinnamon settings intact and all I had to do was add the missing applications that I previously listed with MintBackup.

A charm. Works great and looks terrific.

With full confidence in Mint 18.0, I also decided to install it on my second Dell Inspiron in a dual-boot mode, which was still a full Win 8.1 machine. I was a bit reluctant because of Secure Boot and all that stuff, but the install looked after all that properly: resizing of the drive, turning off Secure boot, and the full install went flawlessly, and booted right up into mint 18.0. The only heart-stopping event, was that Windows still showing the C:/ drive was at the full 1.0TB (!!!) That got me a bit edgy… But upon re-booting into Windows, the startup screen went into “Scanning and Repairing” the C:/ drive… OOPS!!! Was something amiss???

After 20 minutes or so, I rebooted into Windows and now it indicated that the C:/ drive was now about at the expected 500GB. Rebooting, Mint 18.0 was up and running perfectly! And all is well!!!

The only thing I did not want to chance at this time was partitioning for / and /home on this dual-boot machine as the install did not quite offer this, but I may try that at a later date.

The whole point to this story, is that the confidence I have in Clem, the whole Mint Team, and in Mint remains unshaken.

Thank You to the whole team. You’ve done a great job and we all benefit. Please take the negative comments with a grain of salt and trust yourself. I did.

    Regards,

    Michel C.

  246. to Jacob. 326 re 320. Thanks. I’m glad someone was listening. Your suggestions seem reasonable and sound. Thanks, again.

  247. Thomas:

I have the same issues with transparency with Linux Mint Cinnamon 18 and VMWare. I am glad that I am not the only one with the issue, and I can confirm the bug.

As in your case, Linux Mint 17.3 with Cinnamon 3.0 didn’t have the problems (I downloaded Cinnamon 3.0.5 from the nightlies on 17.3 and it worked well).

  248. I have discovered a regression in audio support of Intel HDA HDMI audio in Mint 18. The HDMI audio drops out approximately 10 seconds after any sound is played. This does not happen in 17.3. This is a problem due to the fact that there is about a one second period from the time a sound source begins to play and when audio is actually heard when using HDMI. In 17.3 this one second delay does occur on the very first audio played, the Cinnamon login.oga, but since the audio connection does not drop, there are no delays or lost audio thereafter. In 18 the HDMI audio connection drops 10 seconds after every audio effect resulting in the initial attack of any subsequent audio being lost, and in the case of short audio effects, such as many of the Mint desktop effects, they are lost altogether.

    From inxi -F:

Card-1 Intel Wildcat Point-LP High Definition Audio Controller
    driver: snd_hda_intel
    Card-2 Intel Broadwell-U Audio Controller driver: snd_hda_intel

    17.3 > Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k3.19.0-32-generic
    18 > Sound: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture v: k4.4.0-21-generic

Please fix this. I can not go to 18 as it is.

  249. After i upgrade to mint 18 i got the following after restarting :
initctl:Unable to connect to Upstart: failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused
    mdm(2463): Glib-CRITICAL: g_key_file_free: assertion ‘key_file!=NULL’ failed.

Does anyone have an idea how to solve this issue?

Edit by Clem: Hi, these are OK.

  250. Re @Mike #307,
Thanks for your reply. I can tell you being stuck in software rendering mode is not related to guest additions because I installed them prior to installing 18.
#3 microsoft’s ttf’s not installing, No error messages and I even opened the “details” terminal window to watch the second time. Still working on that. I see that Ubuntu 14.04 had permissions errors for a time that blocked ttf installs but that doesn’t make sense because Mint 17/.1.2.3 ttf installs were flawless for me.
#5 was more an editorial comment on my part. I need Acroread because even though the Linux version was discontinued years ago it still does 100% of what I need (unlike all the open source pdf readers, which are not up to the task kinda like Open/Libre Office vs MS Office). Debian, Ubuntu or Mint I’ve always been able to get acroread working with a little geek magic but it would be so very cool to just click click install. I’ve had great luck with WINE Staging (not the outdated version in the repos) and have successfully run MS Office via WINE but except for a few windows games I prefer to keep my Linux SSD as Linux and my W10 ssd Windows.
Regarding Armory, I’m not sure it’s actively being developed either but it seems weird that some bitcoin software is included in the repos, yet there are no wallets forcing users to an Ubuntu PPA, not always the best choice.
In closing I do understand I won’t experience the “True” Mint 18 running in Virtual Box, however I don’t have a spare machine with adequate specs for experimentation purposes. The 32bit and 16bit PC’s in my collection are better suited for playing old DOS and windows 3.1 games.

  251. After i upgrade to mint 18 i got the following after restarting :
initctl:Unable to connect to Upstart: failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused
    mdm(2463): Glib-CRITICAL: g_key_file_free: assertion ‘key_file!=NULL’ failed.

Does anyone have an idea how to solve this issue?

This a a blocking issue. I can no longer login.

Edit by Clem: No, these are non-blockers. If you can’t log in it’s because of something else. Make sure the upgrade is complete, make sure you’ve got the meta for your edition (mint-meta-cinnamon or mint-meta-mate), check .xsession-errors etc..

  252. Similar problem as comment #318. Wifi doesn’t work on Acer Aspire One. Mint 18 sees internal Atheros card, but won’t connect when selected. Also sees but won’t connect to external Ralink USB wifi card. Both worked fine under 17.3.

  253. Don’t use kernels 4.4.0-28 or 4.4.0-31 if you have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Both have a serious regression in the sleep feature. They shut down the display but don’t put the CPU into a low-power state. The 4.4.0-21 kernel is OK, and so is the unofficial 4.6.0-exton for Debian/Ubuntu from Exton Linux, but 4.4.0-28 and 31 should be avoided.

  254. linux mint 32 bit cinamon sarah , very good interface , fast conection with brodband . if you need system to waching movies and read info its the best , anime laags , game not avaible all not working iven steam , all advice its for ubuntu on this does work

  255. will removing Samba from Rosa help or do anything negative?

Edit by Clem: Removing Samba helps reducing boot time (you need to purge samba though, apt purge samba).

  256. I installed Mint 18 on my Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro 1370 today and couldn’t believe my eyes when I realized the touch screen works! I was also able to change the resolution (it’s way too high on these laptops).

Wifi works great also. Great job Clem and team! I’m so happy I can finally use this machine with a real OS!

  257. I’m FINALLY trying the Mint 18 Cinnamon 32-bit ISO on my Compaq V2000 laptop (Intel 82852/855GM chipset), and FINALLY it looks like the Cinnamon interface is showing the proper drop-shadows, transparencies, and other effects in the correct colors! Heck, even the Alt-Tab Timeline (3D) works beautifully on this old chipset! Briefly tried Firefox and scrolling through pages seems pretty smooth! I was really TERRIFIED about having to nuke my Mint 13 XFCE installation, but now, I just might go ahead and start anew with Mint 18 CINNAMON! Thank you!!! 😀

  258. I have downloaded edition 18 3 times.
On Win7 every time it says the file is corrupted.
    These were on US servers.
This needs to be fixed as it takes 45 minutes each time to finish !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I cant trust your downloads how can I trust the rest of it.
Also Nvidia video drivers why dont you include the most common older ones.
It wont even use MX440 128 meg cards.
And once it goes into fallback mode it wont allow ANY program to be installed !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats a nasty trap your online help is too complex for an average user.
We are not all terminal command genuises. Plus half the fixes dont work cnat find this
    Not allowed that.
    Thats not any good.
Thanks these issues need addressing !!

    Don

  259. I just installed Cinnamon because my old installation of 17.3 XFCE didn’t boot for whatever reason. I was using XFCE since it was the smoothest choice for my computer. Now that XFCE hasn’t been released yet, I decided to try Cinnamon 18, and guess what?… It’s working pretty fast and smooth. I’ll stick to this one from now one. I always format the system partition and perform a clean installation, I think this is the best thing to do.

    Thanks a lot Clem!

  260. I’m having trouble verifying the sha256sum.txt and sha256sum.txt.gpg. When I type into terminal the command to verify the signature the result I get is:
    gpg: can’t open sha256sum.txt.gpg
gpg: verify signatures failed: file open error

I’m currently using Linux Mint 17.2, Kernel 3.16.0-38 on a 32-bit Asus Netbook. I downloaded the 32-bit iso of Linux Mint 18 via torrent.

I’m a newbie to Linux so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!

  261. Hi,

Has anyone noticed that boot times for 18 cinnamon in worse than 17.4. I upgraded from 17.3. Feel a fresh install would have been better.

  262. Issues I have found so far:
    1. xed forgets it’s window size because the config file is installed as owner root.
    2. Libre Office: Highlighting items in drop down menus does not work correctly.
    3. Libre Office: In dialog boxes sometimes letters appear as black boxes. Looks like a missing font. My locale setting is German.
    4. Cinnamon sometimes switches back to the default background image when working.
    5. USB sticks are mounted as read only by default.

  263. Hi,

    A few things I noticed:

The primary monitor function in mdm is buggy. When selecting a style for the mdm login screen the primary monitor dropdown does not display any monitors – just a blank line (it used to work in 17.3). I worked around this by setting the primary monitor for mdm using xradr in /etc/mdm/Init/Default.

When suspending, if multiple users logged in then when I close the laptop lid it will not suspend unless the admin users password is entered. This can be worked around by altering a /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.login1.policy to allow any user permission to suspend.

The known bug of the mouse pointer disappearing at times, especially when switching users. The latest xserver-xorg-video-intel fixes this, however there are also comments for this package to NOT be used for new hardware. I removed the package altogether and the mouse pointer now works as expected.

Also the update manager seems buggy to me. Sometimes it says there are no foreign packages and no packages installed that are up-level compared to the repositories (which is correct reporting). Other times it finds lots of foreign packages and/or packages that are up-level compared to what are in the repositories (this is incorrect).

Seems a bit random as to when update manager reports incorrectly. TBH I have decided against using it and just update everything via apt-get (never had an issue with *unsafe* updates causing issues in the past so I am happy to just update everything now and then).

There are other issues with suspend in linuxmint 18, eg if I close then immediately reopen the laptop lid before the system has fully suspended then it gets itself in a mess, it eventually suspends and then resumes but then the mouse cannot be used to ‘click’ anything and I need to reboot. Also wifi often does not come up after a resume and sometimes loses sight of my own wifi but can see other wifi networks, I am unsure if this is linux issue or a wifi issue, however I never have issues on 17.3.

Apart from that I like linuxmint 18, I can live with the above few issues but it confuses other members of the household, hence a return to 17.3 for now. I will continue to update linuxmint 18 on a regular basis and hopefully these few bugs that affect me will be fixed.

    Regards,
    Scott

  264. i have installed linuxmint 18 cinnamon on my hp G61-336NR.

Everything works fine just that the OS startup isnt faster as it is supposed to be.

However, it’s shut down is faster.

any help will be greatly appreciated

  265. guys where can i report bugs in a proper way?

    – this is the second time (second instalation) that in cinamond the folder color propertie goes away

    – my openoffice is considerably slowler than in last mint version 17.3

    thanks 😀

  266. I really have to point out the problem about Font Viewer.

I cleaned my “/” partition to install Linux mint 18 Cinnamon but got the same as problem people said above. The Font Viewer can no longer be opened up by Cinnamon menu but can be launched by typing gnome-font-viewer from terminal.

I doubt some of my old configs under “/home/MY_NAME” leads to this problem, but the compatibility should not be that bad, I don’t think I have to do a clean re-install just because of this problem. Hope this will be solve in next fixes

  267. File dialogs (open, save, save as) are GNOMEified (especially the context menu), to see that just right click in it.

  268. Been running it now since release. Runs well and love the new Theme.

Only issue is that my Logitech web cam’s microphone is ignored. No sound in although it shows in the sound panel as the default input.

  269. Installed on laptop and desktop. Both had so many problems, I reinstalled 17.3 on both. Neither firefox nor Chromium worked well. Hangups galore. When I attempted to reinstall 17.3 (erase hd and install) it seemed to go okay, but on reboot it opened to 18. Had to manually erase the hd and install 17.3. I’ll stick with 17.3. Best yet.
