LMDE 201109 Gnome
The team is proud to announce the release of LMDE 201109 with updated ISOs for Gnome and Xfce.
Highlights
LMDE in brief
- Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) is a rolling distribution based on Debian Testing.
- It’s available in both 32 and 64-bit as a live DVD with Gnome or Xfce.
- The purpose of LMDE is to look identical to the main edition and to provide the same functionality while using Debian as a base.
What’s new in this release
- All Linux Mint 11 features
- Installer improvements (keyboard variants, locale, bug fixes, UUID in fstab)
- Update Packs, dedicated Update Manager and staged repositories
- GTK2/GTK3 theme compatibility
- Updated software and packages
If you’re new to LMDE, welcome to Linux Mint Debian!
Important info
Multi-core and multi-CPU support in 32-bit kernel:
To guarantee compatibility with non-PAE processors, the 32-bit versions of Linux Mint Debian come with a 486 kernel by default. This kernel does not support SMP, and as a consequence is only able to detect one core and one CPU. If your CPU has multiple cores, or if you have more than one CPU, simply install the 686-PAE kernel and reboot your computer.
Update Pack 2 and Update Pack 3:
This release comes with Update Pack 2 and points to the “Linux Mint Debian Latest” repository as well as the Debian “Security” and “Multimedia” repositories.
Starting with Update Pack 3, “Security” and “Multimedia” become part of “Linux Mint Debian Latest”. When Update Pack 3 is made available, your sources will need to change and all of them will then point at Linux Mint. In the meantime, it is recommended not to apply updates coming from “Security” and “Multimedia”, as they might not be compatible with the packages in Update Pack 2.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is LMDE compatible with Ubuntu-based Linux Mint editions?
No, it is not. LMDE is compatible with Debian, which isn’t compatible with Ubuntu.
2. Is LMDE fully compatible with Debian?
Yes, 100%. LMDE is compatible with repositories designed for Debian Testing or Debian Squeeze.
3. What is a rolling distribution?
LMDE constantly receives updates. Its ISO images are updated now and then but users do not require to re-install it on their systems.
4. How does LMDE compare to the Ubuntu-based editions?
Pros:
- You don’t need to ever re-install the system. New versions of software and updates are continuously brought to you.
- It’s faster and more responsive than Ubuntu-based editions.
Cons:
- Although it’s using Romeo for unstable packages, LMDE continuously changes as it receives updates and new software. Compared to a frozen version of Linux Mint which changes very little once it’s publicly released, it’s not as stable. Things are likely to break more often but fixes can also come quicker. For this reason, LMDE requires a deeper knowledge and experience with Linux, dpkg and APT.
- Debian is a less user-friendly/desktop-ready base than Ubuntu. Expect some rough edges.
5. Will it come with KDE or other desktops?
Yes. It will support KDE and Fluxbox in the near future.
Additional notes:
- About the installer: The live installer is developed from scratch with Debian in mind. It’s configurable and it can be re-used by other Debian-based distributions. We noticed a lack in live technologies and in live Debian installers, so we’re happy to take the lead on this. If you’re a developer and you’re interested in using it, have a look at its source repository and don’t hesitate to contact us so we can help you fork it and merge upcoming changes between our two projects.
- About bugs: Please use Launchpad for bug reports.
- About the media: It comes as a liveDVD. Locales work differently in Debian and the package base requires more space. We made LMDE compatible with unetbootin though, so you can install it using a USB stick.
- Dedicated chat room: #linuxmint-debian is open to LMDE users on irc.spotchat.org.

We look forward to receiving your feedback. Thank you for using Linux Mint and have a lot of fun with this new release!
downloading.. 🙂
Been waiting a long time for this! 🙂
Awesome! I’ve been waiting for this release for a long time. I’m still a newbie so I’m going to download both Gnome and Xfce 32-bit to give them a try.
Thank you to Clem and the Linux Mint Team!
When is LXDE 64-bit coming out???
I have had the RC installed since it was released as my primary operating system. Do I need to download the Final Release and reinstall or will all the necessary updates be applied to the RC
These are happy days for me indeed. I have been using Mint since 3.0 Cassandra and now I can finally bid farewell to the constraints of Ubuntu 🙂
Guy: Apply the updates for apturl and flash as they fix problems from the RC. As you can see on http://community.linuxmint.com/iso/view/89, other RC bugs affected the installer, the default software selection, and mime associations for audio CDs. These were fixed to give users a better out of the box experience, but if you’re already running the RC you don’t need these.
Sounds good, been on LMDE Gnome 64bit for a while now and it’s working well on my laptop, got a few questions in relation to this newer release and my current set up which I will put to the forum.
Keep up the good work (-:
Poor me! I just installed the previous version of LMDE last week (because the RC didn’t work for me). Could anybody post the line in the sources.list for the “Linux Mint Debian Latest” repository?
Honestly, I prefer blue than the green of LinuxMint. Does anybody know how to compile the Unico engine on LinuxMint?
Thank LinuxMint for the LMDE.
Thai Dang Vu: “deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free” in replacement of your Debian repo and install mintupdate-debian in replacement of mintupdate.
Fantastic! I was waiting for this to make the jump to LMDE.
Had been waiting for this for so long and finally my favourite LMDE is here. Thank you Team Linux Mint for taking care of us.
I know what I’m doing this weekend!
Steven: Me too!
I would like to hear some discussions about the gnome vs. xfce versions of the new release before I get started.
I installed the RC and never been happier, just waiting for the LMDE-KDE to dual boot. Good job!.
Linux Mint Really Rocks!
This is good, but the real question is, When is the KDE version of LMDE
coming out?
Al.
Thankyou Clem for getting back so promptly.
Hey, good timing. Will be installing this weekend. Thanks Clem and the gang.
Hey, good I like it, downloading…..
Great work team!
thanks!
Cooooooooooooool THX
You know Clem and his team works hard when the “Start page” looks the same for a long while, but its a good thing cause we all know something amazing is around the corner!.Downloading knowing from the RC that its gonna be ROCKSOLID.Windows are for houses not computers and this IS the distro that throws the biggest rocks around!.Its a great OS,wheter its based on Debian or Ubuntu.Be proud of yourselves MINT TEAM!!!.
Great relased!
Version fluxbox date? thx!
Nice. Installing in a few hours.
Both RC and release fail to boot. Radeon HD 6790 -normal bootI get a gpu lockup, nomodeset goes to garbled screen in normal and compatability mode.
Any ideas?
Meus agradecimentos à equipe do Linux Mint.
Aguardava com muita ansiedade esta rolling-release.
Downloading…
Espero que tudo ocorra bem na instalação.
Saudações do Brasil.
I have been waiting for this release for a long time ! Thanks Linux Mint team !!! Any news on –NETFLIX– playing on Linux ? That is the only thing keeping windowz on my computer since I don’t have television. I love Linux mint, and use it for all my personal banking, email, and sensitive personal info since I never got hacked using it, not to mention NO virus infections ever ! Of course I have my firewall set up properly. Keep up the good work ! Thanks. Jason
Not noticed any problems with this release after playing with it for an hour or so. The Mint team really understands and listens to what its users want and needs in a distro, unlike Ubuntu. Great release guys, looking forward to see what comes in Mint 12.
Tanks! Downloading…
I’m waiting for KDE Mint too.
I need to know about Linux Mint Debian 201109. Does it based in Debian Squeeze or Debian 7 «Wheezy?
hi, ger mulvey
put “– radeon.modeset=0” in the kernel line without quotes, it’ll boot smoothly.
you know i think it is better to just run your os hot. dont install it on the ole hd. just slip it in you optic drive and let her rip. seems to run faster too. plays videos yeh thats the ticket just put the codecs and everything in the browser. only running 1 gig probably would run better with 2. have mint ubuntu 10-10, 11-04 fedora is it me or does fedora act like windows. it likes to just take over the hard drive. probably that boot loader and partition thing again. installs fast and loads fairly guick. oh yea back to installed oses. they run slower to me installed. only problem running hot better save whatever to a usb drive everything will be lost when shut down occurs.
rick wright
p.s. im running mint xfce 64 bit now.
Thanks for the update, guys. Can someone either offer help or a link to solve the error when using update manager or software manager. The same issue existed with the 201108 RC, so I waited for the full release. Even tried changing server to “other” and “select best server”. Still, no luck. Loved Mint since Gloria, but sort of a newbie to LMDE. I want to learn. Thanks.

The latest LMDE is better than ever! It’s been my daily driver for at least a week. The only thing I miss in LMDE is a couple of key PPAs. How hard would it be to allow PPAs into LMDE? LMDE with an improved installer, PPAs, and a better Wine would probably make all of my installs Linux Mint, rather than just the 70% I’m doing right now. 🙂
Oh also, I found an asus dvd burner that won’t work in Linux. I should probably complain on the Asus boards somewhere….
Sorry for my ognorance, but where can i download the 686-PAE kernel for this realease? i have a two core CPU
thanks linux mint! downloading
RE:33 In the repos; fire synaptic; search for the 686-PAE kernel; mark to install; click apply!
Wait till it finishes and reboot.
Cheers LMDE; Cheers to Team Linux Mint; Cheers to Clem.
Dear Clem,
I think you should include minimum hardware requirements in your release notes; if they didn’t change you should emphasize that they didn’t change. However, it is a good practice to include it afresh each time so new entrants into the Mint world don’t need to wade through old documentation.
Surprisingly though no one, almost no one, puts it out up front. We seem to require to “search” through “other” documentation.
Thanks and Cheers!
Congratulations!
Great job once again Clem !
@heavymetalmixer – Just go to meanu, select package manager and search for pae. you will find pae-686 kerel which can be installed from there.
Downloading it. I was trying LMDE RC but it was not detecting my other drives. Hope this might have sorted out.
great edition!!
Linux mint team should proud on themselves. Keep it up guys. You have done great job in some years.
Mint is better in performance than it’s parent UBUNTU(on my PC). So soon their may chance that mint replace Ubuntu.
Обязательно попробую для себя! А кто нибудь ставил на нетбук, как работает?
I have installed the original release, the RC and now the new release on virtual box with guest additions. The new release has made significant improvements, moving from a Debian squeeze type installer that required you to format and partition your hard drive, to the most recent version that offers a more Mint like suggested partition layout (although not assigning root / automatically). A vast improvement!
I haven’t noticed significant changes from the RC once installed. Unlike the original, however, updates no longer point direct to Debian Testing as in the RC and that’s a good thing for most Mint users.
Good job!
It fits very nicely on a Mini-DVD (1.4GB space)!
Which version of Gnome LMDE use, Gnome 2 or Gnome 3? Hopefully that is GNOME 3 finally implemented in LMDE.
Mint team continue like this and we will have world domination very soon!
2Mark
Mark Shuttleworth ? :o)
5. Will it come with KDE or other desktops?
Yes. It will support KDE and Fluxbox in the near future.

Fuck yeah ;[
I am currently using the Linux Mint 2011 and find this to be the best OS. Please advise how do I update to 201109 from within my current Linux Mint or will I have to download the new version again.
Would be grateful is someone can tell me what is LMDE ?
Farid Ansari
Karachi, Pakistan
Thanks.
Same question: When is the KDE release ?
bahadiroglu
Mersin, Turkey
I’d love to try it but the multi-core thing worries me. Older dual core laptops already have various compatibility and energy/heating problems in newer Linux distros.
Been using LMDE Gnome 64bit feels pretty good. Right on.
@ Farid, LMDE is Linux Mint Debian Edition.
It’s based on Debian and not Ubuntu (as the Linux Mint 11 is).
You’ll have to download and install LMDE … there is no upgrade path from Linux Mint 11 to LMDE.
However, once you’re using LMDE you’ll have a Debian based rolling distro … meaning you shouldn’t have to do a fresh install ever again! :o).
@Farid
LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) is the linux mint flavour based on Debian linux as opposed as Linux Mint which is based on Ubuntu (and ubuntu based on Debian)
I’m affraid you’ll have to download LMDE and install it over your Linux Mint 11 as you can’t update one to another.
@ Rodoljub
You can get GNOME 3 by changing the repositories to Debian Testing. However I would have thought at present it would not sit well with LMDE
If you want GNOME 3 I would suggest Fedora 15
Fixed? I guess not – phoronix somewhere has a tut on this:

hi, ger mulvey
put “– radeon.modeset=0″ in the kernel line without quotes, it’ll boot smoothly.”
Still getting as far as garbled colour to the bottom of the screen again. Running from usb wrote by unetbootin Hash matches so I know the image is fine! (also posting this over to the forum)
Thank you so much Clem! Been looking forward to this for a while now.
Farid: Linux Mint ‘2011’ is not a product of the Mint team, so you probably mean Linux Mint 11 (version 11). The version you have is built upon Ubuntu. LMDE is a version of Mint built straight on top of Debian (which itself is the basis of Ubuntu).
It tends to be more stable, with slightly better performance for those of us with lower-end computers. If you are happy with Mint 11 (main edition) then there may be little reason to switch. If you do, then you would have to reinstall.
When installing it from HDD (by extracting the whole /casper folder from within the ISO and setting up Grub to load the kernel and initrd from there) it asks for the user (‘mint’) password during certain parts of the install procedure. What is the default user password?
@Rick: It shouldn’t ask for the password at all. If it does, it’s likely there’s a corruption in your ISO or on the media itself. The username is “mint” and the password is blank (i.e. you just press Enter if asked for a password).
Clem, Thanks to you and your team taking it to the next level. We are all spoiled with all the great work you guys do. The podcast boyz are doing an excellent job also.
I just installed the final re-spin of 201109….it is working quite well and i am pointed to “latest” by default…
what i am confused about it, for update pack 3 (when it is sent to latest) will the changes to the sources it is pointed be updated automatically in the “mint updater” first before “pack 3” is sent down or are we going to have to change them manually?
And if manually, is Clem going to give exact instructions on how to do that because i am sure there are some here (like myself) that will need to guidance on exactly what we should do?
@Craig: It’s possible mintupdate will update your sources automatically and switch Security and Multimedia to their Mint alternatives. We’ll be testing this with romeo to make sure it works as expected before of course 🙂
Thank you Clem…By the way, when i installed the final iso, i kept it pointed at “latest” and did do the available “update pack 2″…does that mean i will have a problem when “pack 3” comes into “latest” (when the sources are changed)?
I’m sure some of use here did that already…so if there would be a problem, i hope a solution to fix it can be posted…
I put 201109 Gnome DVD 64-bit on a USB stick.
It booted very quickly to the desktop.
Unfortunately it then froze and the pointer wouldn’t move.
How could this be corrected?
I have an Aspire netbook with an AMD C50 CPU and 1GB memory.
Please help.
im getting problems after installing nvidia-glx drivers – system doesnt boot…pity
Hello!
Fantastic! It is very fast, much faster than other editions.
Very good work!
DVD boots fine and when X session starts, my monitor is ‘out of range’, so my screen just goes blank. If I had a conventional installer, like ‘plain’ GNU/ Debian, I’d be able to do the install and then run ‘Xorg -configure’, before an X session started. I’m able to get a virtual TTY.
Thanks for creating the new release.
Chris.
Cooooooooool!!!!!!
Great job!
Thanks for all!
Click on the screenshot above and you will see red shadows near the fonts. I don’t like that. But I don’t want to use KDE. When will Gnome font rendering become eye-friendly?
Congratulations on the release, Clem and team.
You always bring Good News.
Are these Update Packs 1 & 2 for regular LMDE users and how do I acquire them? I never installed an Update Pack 1. Do I need to add a repostory? I have LMDE regular installed on a computer upstairs and haven’t seen anything about Update Packs. The Update Manager only shows the usual apps updates. I must have missed something.
On my main computer, I am using LMDE 201108 RC version Gnome 64-bit and that displays as up-to-date and is perfection. I guess I don’t need to do anything there, do I, as what’s in the Update Packs will come through the normal updates.
Thanks for all time and effort into making Linux Mint such a pleasing system.
Hi Clem and team, Many of the questions I am seeing here are reflected in concerns I voiced in a few forum posts of mine:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=81449#p473247
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=79177&start=20#p473051
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=187&t=80386&start=80#p471684
Perhaps some opinions can be shared? I apologize for plugging myself here, but I would like to have some discussion on these matters.
Installed the XFCE x64_64 version to see if I like it better than Gnome yet.
Working well, thanks. I am hesitant to install anything that it did not ship with given the warnings not to use the wrong repos until update3 but it seems to have what I need for now.
It would be nice if the installer let you have mount points on more than one drive and allowed LVM. I agree also that a single DVD to choose between xfce, gnome, fluxbox would be neat, but is probably not always going to be possible given space constraints and is mostly a waste of bandwidth.
The AMD64 version’s multi-media support out of the box is a big improvement over LMDE 10!
Great release!
Well thats nice. The most recent version that offers a more Mint like suggested partition layout, with slightly better performance for those of us with lower-end computers.
If site owner allow I recommend that you make the new TECHNOGIES published on http://www.technogies.com
Here you must have Question what is “TECHNOGIES” . The article and news related to Technology is known as “Technogies” .
Fantastic release!
Hi, This is Norm from Toronto, Canada,
1. Introduction:
Beginner/Intermediate level Linux User since 2006, let me tell you my adventure with Mint “Debian” latest release xfce live CD which was released this weekend:
I am using Linux since 2006, I have started with PCLOS KDE dual boot on P3 for three years, then fedora, then mint, then ubuntu, slax puppy etc… Presently no more distro hopping, I have settled with Ubuntu 10.10 (myself) and Linux Mint Katya (for my daughter) for our 2 desktops. 3rd computer our HP laptop (M$$ Win 7) I can boot USB portable HD Ubuntu 11.04 or optional USB 8 GB stick Puppy Linux 5.28 (my favorite Linux).
2. What happened to me with LM Debian Xfce??
I have downloaded Linux Mint latest Debian Xfce Edition Saturday am for test and I have had a terrible “HARDWARE” experience with it!.
As soon as I have loaded it on “my” desktop (ACER AM!00 E1302B) the verbose loading console starting giving messages “multiple IRQ bus address not found, error .. fixing the problem..”,
Then in a second, somehow it managed to load Debian Mint Xfce Live CD latest edition, for experienced Live CD users so far so good.. tested the Deb xfce live CD for a while, than shut down .. so far everything seems usual for live CD environment..
Then I decided to compare Debian Xfce edition vs. to my one of my favorite Linux Mint 11 LXDE live Cd……>>>> .. Now the fun begins ….<<<>> Fails…>>>
NOW WHAT?? I LOST BOOTING ANYTHING FROM CD BOOT DEVICE OF MY DESKTOP…
My life saver Cd boot drive does not not work anymore !!!
Thanks Debian…
….. Saturday p.m. miracle solution ….
Turn off the ACER Desktop computer, get a screw driver, unbolt the desktop cover of ACER desktop, unplug SATA CDROM data plug connection physically, wait a while, then plug back the SATA CDROM cable connection, power up the computer…>>> Hey .. It works.. BIOS can reconfigure itself take off the junk that LM Debian Xfce put in and can recognize my CDROM IRQ address correctly and I can boot any ISO as usual from CDROM Device again,
3. My constructive comments to Forum:
a) I will stay away from Linux Mint “Debian” XFCE/Main Editions for the time being unless someone professionally can explain to me why I have had such horrible Linux software–> hardware BIOS hardware interrupt experience which I have never had experienced before with any other Linux Live CD such as Mandrake, Slacks, Puppy, Suse, Fedora etc.
b) My opinion: Linux Mint Debian Xfce: — THERE IS CARDIDAL SOFTWARE MISTAKE—-
Any software should not never ever interfere with any computer’s BIOS hardware bus interrupt address configurations……|||| It contradicts with Universal Linux Slogan that any OS system should not dictate the end user’s computer/hardware..
Thanks God, I did not test LMDE XFCE Live CD in my expensive HP laptop…
I have great respect to Linux Mint’s contribution to Linux community, as I mentioned, I use Linux Mint Katya permanently in one of my desktops; however, I appreciate someone looks into the bug I have experienced BIOS/Hardware interruption of Linux Mint Debian Xfce latest edition.
Respectfully,
Norm
Note from Clem: Norm, your comment is constructive, detailed and polite so while moderating it I decided to approve it.. Having said that, its content is alarming, scary, almost FUD-like. I would hate to think that you were right and my experience with Debian, Ubuntu and Linux in general tells me you shouldn’t jump to such alarming conclusions. Opening your hardware and interacting with the devices with a screwdriver seems excessive and I doubt Debian would modify anything that has to do with your hardware and your BIOS, I’m not even sure it physically can tbh… Please do take the time to troubleshoot this in the forums and ask people for help and second opinions.
I can’t get working the Tp-link tl-wn620g on Linux Mint Debian 64 bits.
In the 32 bits version the wireless usb card worked fine.
downloading….
I like it – faster than the Ubuntu version
However:
1 The text in webpages in Firefox is hinted and doesn’t look all that great.
2 Doesn’t prompt me to install the proprietary ATI driver (and I’m not sure how to get it)
For Windows users who want to try Linux this distro is the worst – why do you have to do loads of research on the internet to find out how the hell you install this?? why can’t it be a simple process such as installing linux mint 11? I’ve been ‘playing’ with different linux distros for about five months and I still can’t get this thing on my laptop! A’newbies’ guide to lmde partitioning should be automatically included on the live dvd. I know that lmde is debian and not ubuntu but does that mean that it has to be such a pain in the ass to install? All this does is to re-affirm to Windows users that linux is just for ‘geeks’ Please guys make it easier!
I love it. Stayed with Mint 10 because of Ubuntu based issues with Mint 11. The problem was getting wireless to work on my Starling. Tried out this version of LMDE and everything works perfectly.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I welcome debian base with open hands. If for some reason Ubuntu ceases to exist we have only Debian to fall back.
What’s the easiest path to getting the Broadcom wireless working with this new edition?
I really would like to see the LMDE on distrowatch. You cannot get such a good overview for the features of distros anywhere on the web. And I would like to have a good overview for this distro as well and not only for the ubuntu-based.
Does this edition fix the gpu hangs for intel 8xx based chipsets, or do we still have to ride with vesa?
Great time for a reinstall! 😀 Thanks for the hard work, guys! 🙂 And it really is good news Mint will move to Debian for KDE and Fluxbox. I’m sure they will perform better than before. 🙂
Installed the xfce version to an external drive and so far so good. The previous LMDE versions kept breaking with the numerous updates so I continued using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (issues with xfce 4.8 in Xubuntu 11.04, 10.10 was good, but really need easy networking) and Mint 10 gnome (more issues with Mint 11 or Ubuntu 11.04) till the new .iso was posted. Will consider installing to internal drive if continues to perform. So far xfce 4.8 working flawlessly in LMDE xfce on the eeepc 901 from old 160GB laptop drive in external housing.
Many thanks.
Another slick release. Many thanks for that, Clem & team.
Installer seems to have a problem in the sense if the partition to be used for installation is already mounted it hangs midway. I had mounted one of the partitions from within the live session for backing up some files and started the installer. It reached about 40% and seemed to hang in the message “Copying files to usr/share/groff-tmac”. Restarted the installer and again got the same error and that’s when i realised mount could be the issue. Subsequently when i tried again after unmounting all partitions it went through fine.
I guess its better to unmount all partitions within the installer itself or atleast give a warning/error on mounted partitions, if any, this way it doesn’t catch the user off guard. I think Mint itself had this feature or whether i saw it in some other distro that i’m not sure, but such a feature does exists in the Linux world.
Why you no make CD version?!
Potential New user attracted by stable Debian with constant updates without the need to reinstall OS every year (I’m coming from a creaking XP used for over 10 years. See the Update packs will be changing from 2 to 3 – my questions are when and how will this happen?
When it does I then presume I will need to change sources for updates to exclude Security and Multi media is this correct and if so how is it done? Sorry if these are stupid questions or I am asking in the wrong place but after flirting with Linux for a few years via Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, Opensuse and having had problems with sound, screens, printers, input out output errors on installs I’m keen to try and get this to work!
Please make distrowatch-site for LMDE!
aside from having to manually setup my ATI accelerated video driver (on my Asus G-71 laptop) this has been by far the nicest installation of LMDE (or Debian for that matter). I do a lot of audio engineering (verkaro.org) and the extra snappiness combined with ease of use is a big deal to me. I am very happy with this new 64bit LMDE release. You deserve kudos from Santa Fe NM. Kudos.
The XFCE version (32-bit) is quite nice. Very lightweight, using about 120megs when idle (nothing running). However, for the life of me, I cannot understand why ALL gnome applications were chosen for the XFCE version. Why not replace Brasero with Xfburn, gthumb/EOG with Ristretto, Feh or gpicview, Banshee with Audacious, Deadbeef, or Guayadeque?? It appears that the ONLY difference between the Gnome and XFCE versions is gnome-panel and xfce-panel. What is the point in a lightweight distribution if the applications it uses are lead weights?
Again I repeat that it works flawlessly and xfce-panel is much less of a memory hog than gnome-panel. I just dont understand the application choices.
I have been trying to install LMDE 64-bit 201108 (RC) and 201109 on VMware Fusion (LMDE 32-bit gets installed OK). It fails miserably all the time. Tried many options, but all failed. During the installation, just after successfully copying all files, during the time it tries to remove live environment, the installer suddenly disappears.
Any ideas as to why this is happening ? and anyway to get it (LMDE 64-bit) installed on VMware Fusion ?
My references to above are to the release LMDE GNOME 64-bit 201108 (RC) and 201109. I missed mentioning GNOME part earlier.
Hi Clem,
>When Update Pack 3 is made available, your sources will need to change and all of them will then point at Linux Mint.
Any hint on when to expect the Update Pack 3? Next month, this Xmas, next year?
P.S. Thank you for your ongoing efforts!
In my opinion, the new LMDE release is much better than Katya. It’s faster, more stable, and just as elegant. And now that LMDE is mature, it really deserves a codename of its own.
How about Katherine, or Katerina – a “grown-up” version of Katya?
P.P.S. I installed LMDE 201101 on a rather old noteboook for one of my not-so-techy friends, and changed the repositories to Squeeze using the tutorial available here:
http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/497
The guy used to phone me for help quite often. Well, not anymore – because Linux Mint just works. Thank you for the great distro that saved him and me lots of time and trouble.
First the menu crashed at the start, then on about 1/4 the way the installer crashed without any error message or whatsoever.
menu crash: http://bayimg.com/BAKJfaADC (reload doesn’t help)
MintAdvocate – Look at the blog post from the first spin of the Debian Xfce version. They are no longer regarding the Xfce edition as only for lightweight use, but as a more mainstream edition. http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1725
For lightweight, look now to LXDE or Fluxbox
PLEASE CLEM.
MAKE THE NEXT MAIN RELEASE AS THIS:
* MAKE A COOL BLUE MINT THEME AVAILABLE
* GNOME 3.2 HEAVILY TWEAKED, WITH PANELS, MIN.MAX BUTTONS, AND ALL OTHER GOOD STUFF JUST LIKE LM IS NOW
* KEEP THE COLLECTION OF NICEST APPS AND CODECS ALTOGETHER
* BE THE FIRST ONE IN DISTROWATCH.COM – FOR EVER.
WE’RE WAITING!
Waiting a KDE version.

@bob said: “Please make distrowatch-site for LMDE!”
MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK. If they do that, Mint looses position in Distrowatch.com (Linux Mint, Linux Mint Debian, Linux Mint KDE, Linux Mint XFCE…)
@ Clem: So far i am loving this new re-spin of LMDE 64 bit…Though there is still a few rough edges left…installation went very smooth, swap worked (which it did not on previous install 6 months ago) and as long as the update packs pointed to “latest” don’t bork my system, i think i will be staying with it (as opposed to running back to mint main edition as i did the last time i had it on here)….
Mint main edition is great…though when this runs smooth, i seem to like this a bit better and like the idea of no longer needing to re-install every 6 months to get the latest version of Mint…
Main rough edges still present: 1) would still be nice if eventually you could add some “auto install” options like Mint Main Edition has…
2) Touchpad tap is still not turned out by default (had to get into the mouse control to turn it on) 3) Can’t seem to make mint meny transparent
4) Some programs don’t get added on to Mint Menu unless you go into “menu settings” and check the “debian” checkbox….
5) Mint sound doesn’t play after logging in….(as it does in main edition)…
Otherwise: EXCELLENT and GREAT WORK….keep it up!!!
oh forgot…you have to install “apt-xapian” to get quick search to work on package manager (last rough edge i noticed)…..
i think that is about it…
I’m waiting for KDE-based realese. 😉 Hope to see it very soon 😉
Well done guys;)
@Carlos Felipe:
First: I dont want five distrowatch-sites but only two for the two different mint distros. Main and LMDE. They are really damn different distros. And LMDE is not listed if I click on the mint distro.
Second: So what? Who cares if they loose a position? But I like to have more transparency! I dont even know which kernel is used in LMDE…
Problem installing LMDE 201109
I downloaded the image live DVD. Put it on a flash drive and booted up. When you try to install the system (run through a shortcut Install Mint), the following message:
Granted permissions without asking for password.
The /usr/bin/live-installer program was started with the privileges of the root user with out the need to ask for a password, due to your systems authentication mechanism setup. It is possible that you are being allowed to run specific programs as user root without the need for a password or that the password is cached. this is not a problem report; its simply a notification to make sure are aware of this.
In this case, you can press the button in the message only close, nothing else.
What he wants and how to get around this?
@bob:
“I dont even know which kernel is used in LMDE…”
? – You never use the “System Monitor”?? (Under Systemtools)
Can it be easier? 🙂
See LMDE Youtube reviews from sneekylinux & quidsup. Pretty well received, one thing mentioned by quidsup was that for a rolling distro (based on testing) it’s using old software – firefox 5 for instance??
On Distrowatch – surely must be possible to show both Ubuntu & Debian releases on the same page?
Congratulations to all people making this happen for our great pleasure and freedom.
Thank yall so much.
Keep on the good work (on LMDE-KDE too if I may ask ;-P )
Bests
I haven’t installed LMDE yet. Because I need and want to know the kernel-version and all the other features BEFORE I install a system. And distrowatch is a wonderful site for a good overview of a distros features. And LMDE is still not listed.

Concerning the “Update Pack 2 and Update Pack 3 – Important information” and issue, could you describe more in detail how to apply the updates to avoid any problem?
Thanks in advance 🙂
@bob
You don’t have to install before you test Linux, you can run it live!!
You also can install it on an USB-stick, really INSTALL it normally on an USB-stick, and then run it.
Why complain when there are a lot of possibilities?? 🙂
Excelente, mejor que Julia
@bob
lol, look for in google lmde review [..]
Don’t destroy the Mint marketing strategy 😛
Exelente trabajo!!
I had moved from Ubuntu based Mint to XFCE. For those who want to know, it uses the 2.6.39-2-486 kernel version. The composition is same like on Debian, but I’m bored of Gnome and XFCE is my right choice. At the beginning, drivers could be the problem to set up, but overall performance is very better, especially when I watch 720p movies on my laptop with modest configuration (1.7ghz Celeron, Intel 128mb video 1280×800 and 512mb ram). Besides on fact that Windows can better handle Intel video cards, I want to have conformity, speed and not to think about viruses. My rate 1-5: 4.5 – almost perfect, because some functions can be out of control, but for everyday using, it’s great.
Can somebody help me about this ? It’s on XFCE 32bit

iHaveProblem: You’re missing the appropriate fonts. Open a terminal and install them … say you want to install the tamil fonts you would type “apt install ttf-tamil-fonts”, say you want to list fonts that are installable you would type “apt search ttf”.
The “Mint Debian” thumbnail on the front page of linuxmint.com still points to the 201012 release announcement (http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1604).
Hi
Linux Mint Debian 201109 32 bit Kernel 486
2.6.39-2-486
LM Debian 32 bit 201109 Edition
For multiple cores or multi CPU only one core or one CPU will be detected
Instructions from the release notes: Install a PAE Kernel/restart the computer
intel chipset
My old laptop has a dual core processor so only core was detected
after installing the LM Debian 201109 32 Bit
From Package Manager (synaptic) i installed a 686 Pae Kernel
Like:
linux-image-2.6.39-2-686-pae
Restarted the computer and the new 686-pae kernel appeared in the
grub list. I’ve tested it and it works good so far. The two cores
(dual core) were detected – terminal command inxi -f to confirm it
Hope the missing packages listed above to be shipped with the next
LM Debian iso respin. (i.e video card driver installer)
My sources.list is pointed to latest repos so, i will be in stand by
mode to receive and update the system – Pack 3 via MintUpdate Debian
Great work Clem and the Linux Mint Team!
Congrats!
I’ve been using LMDE for almost 6 months now… it is without a doubt the finest mix of “cutting edge” and “stable” that I have ever encountered. I love it and easily recommend it to anyone with at least a modicum of linux knowledge (in other words… not for a brand new Linux user… they should stick to standard Mint).
Thank you!
To Tony:
I fixed those problems you are discriving and I had as well after the RC iinstallation, I’m surprised the fonts wasn’t fixed on the final release but anyway, sent me your e-mail and I will sent you the information on how to correct the fonts issue and how to install the Nvidia drivers. Sent me a message from the Community page, I’m registrered as “manny” and I will be very glad to help you out on your problem.
Regards
@ manny,
why dont you post it here, how to fix the fonts in Firefox?
I had installed ubuntu 11.04 how can i unistall it and install linux mint? I own a netbook samsung nf210 runing win 7 starter and ubuntu (as i mentioned)
Hope you can help me, best regards from México city
Linux Mint Debian 201109 64
Thank you Clem !!!
Working graet with Lenovo X201.
what the difference katya & it?
@tux-sven and Carlos Felipe
I simple like to have a feature-list before i download, burn, test or install a system on usb or harddrive.
Distrowatch would be an easy solution.
And I dont care about highscores, which have no significant meaning anyway.
I agree with bob. Distrowatch-side would be awesome. Might be possible to show both distros on one side…..????
Ufff I just installed the previous version of LMDE last week (because the RC didn’t work for me). Could anybody post the line in the sources.list for the “Linux Mint Debian Latest” repository?
I have Five netbooks and notebooks operating with Mint Operating Systems. Keep up the good work with Mint.
I have yet to try these new releases yet, but I am tempted to in the near future.
The iso I downloaded wouldn’t make a proper bootable USB stick with unetbootin. I have posted in the forum, but I figured I’d raise a flag here, too. It was running under Windows XP, though, and I don’t know what version I was using
Could you provide DVD ISO include both 32bit & 64bit? I have more than one notebook and I want to try this. But I wouldn’t to write more DVD. Just thisnk about environment issue. To save resource as possible as we can. Thanks with best wish./Downloadren
Beste Mint Team, jullie zijn werkelijk de beste.
De enige distro die right-out-the-box werkt !
Hartelijk dank voor jullie werk vanuit België!
I upgraded to the latest version of unetbootin (v555), but no change, with the stick formatted as either FAT or FAT32.
What am I forgetting?
@benebene, visit this forum “http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=46550” and see the post that talks about “.fonts.cnf” It fixes the rendering mainly in FireFox. I would suggest Clem to have a loock on the fonts issues in LMDE wich in my opinion is not up to the quality of the distribution.
Cheers
Missing a working handbrake version and me-tv at this moment
@Mike Czaplinski:
I always use USB-sticks instead of DVD/CD:s. Also when I installed this LMDE release.
This time I used Unetbootin ver 549-1, running on “previous” LMDE.
I use to take home the ISO first and check MD5-sum. Then I always REFORMAT the USB stick to FAT 32 before I use it. Don’t just DELETE old files on the stick!!! Then I create my bootable USB with root privileges. It works well. 😀
EXCELENTE!!!!!!!!!! 🙂
Fonts look fine in Chrome…maybe that is just a firefox related problem?
Since Clem did the ubuntu patching to libcairo, when i surf in Chrome everything seems to look as good as it is did in the ubuntu based version of mint…and much much better then it did before he did the patching (debian doesn’t do it and that is why it doesn’t look as good as ubuntu)….
I did do the pack 2 updates, (didn’t see his announcement about that) so i hope there will not be a problem when update pack 3 becomes available for “latest”…also, i hope Clem will be able to set it to change over automatically to the new sources…and if not, then please have instructions on what to do on the announcements page…
Clem’s quote:
This release comes with Update Pack 2 and points to the “Linux Mint Debian Latest” repository as well as the Debian “Security” and “Multimedia” repositories.
Starting with Update Pack 3, “Security” and “Multimedia” become part of “Linux Mint Debian Latest”. When Update Pack 3 is made available, your sources will need to change and all of them will then point at Linux Mint. In the meantime, it is recommended not to apply updates coming from “Security” and “Multimedia”, as they might not be compatible with the packages in Update Pack 2
Does that mean it is better to disable debian security and multimedia repositories?
Linux Mint 11 is a NICE operating system!
I have discovered new free programs in Linux for Video editing.
No need for windows 7 anymore!
Is it possible to get “OpenShot Video Editor” and “DeVeDe” standard in new releases of Linux Mint?
Now i do anyting in Linux! I love you all!
Linux is Wonderfull!
SuperTux 😉
tux-sven:
I always reformat the stick when I reload it.
It may be that the computer I was trying to test the booting on won’t boot from USB: I took the stick I was using for LMDE XFCE and put Knoppix on it, and it failed in the same way on that machine. But I took it home and tried it on my laptop (which is my main LMDE XFCE box) and it booted fine. I will reload the stick with LMDC XFCE one more time and try it, so that could have been the problem all along.
I will let the blog know.
I am glad to see these versions go stable. I can’t wait for the kde version! When can we expect a beta, Clem?
I need to turn in my nerd card.
The USB stick worked fine on my personal box (an HP Pavillion laptop), but not on any of the Dell computers I use at work.
I fail at basic troubleshooting…. 🙁
@ Mike Czaplinski:
If your computer don’t has the ability to start from an USB, or a DVD-drive but has a CD-drive, Google for the Start Device “PLOP”. PLOP makes it possible to start from the live-USB. I have tested it with success on a very old computer. 😀
@ Mike Czaplinski:
I expected that you already had changed/tried to change your BIOS for USB-starting before you posted your comment. Only if that didn’t succeed, go on with the PLOP. Good luck.
The only competition I see for Windows is if Linux Mint, adopts some kind of mix between the Mint Menu and DockBarX, with compiz being the window manager. Keep the same usual and stable set of applications and everything is going to be fine.
Esta version de Linux Mint es genial!!!!!!
El ventilador del sistema apenas se escucha y detecta todos los dispositivos de la PC. El tiempo de respuesta es muy bueno. Felicitaciones al equipo de Linux Mint. Sigan Asi!!!
Linux Mint Debian 201109 is not working correctly all I get is ERROR after ERROR. I thought Linux Mint was user friendly ? It’s not user friendly now. I was going to switch for Ubuntu to Mint , because I don’t like Unity.I tried install software I get this error “could not apply changes fix broken packages first”… I’m also getting this error if I try to install filezilla, or inkscape or any software . “The following packages have unmet dependencies: libc6-dev : Breaks: gcc-4.4 (< 4.4.6-4) but 4.4.5-8 is to be installed E: Broken packages "E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'perl'. Please see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. (2) AND The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_mintMenu".
It is the first time I am using LMDE, since I wanted to try it. Before that I was using Katya and Mint 10 main gnome versions. Speedwise, I think it is better than Katya. One thing I would like to know/ ask is there any way to increase the size and fonts of panel, mint menu, icons, or right click meanu font size (as can be done in KDE 4.6.5 and above, by just dragging). With computer screens going from 4:4 to 16:9 ratio and resolution from 800×600 to 1920×1200 menus and all other things looks very small. Specially if you are accessing your linux mint LMDE/ Katya from somewhere else using Teamviewer (which is working great in LMDE 201109) it becomes very diffcult to read the screen. Can anyone tell me the way. Or I request Clem and Team to look into it.
was stoped in “copyng usr/lib/i386-Linux-qnu/libfreetype.so.6.6.2”.
Enyone know a probblem?
Answar me to max.cellcom@gmail.com
The first two times I downloaded this I got a corrupt file… The third time I download this it worked perfect . If it works with my Genius tablets / with Wizardpen I will make a full switch from to Linux Mint , because I don’t like Unity … I love Linux Mint Debian 201109 (Gnome & Xfce) GREAT JOB !!!
Gracias por crear estos sistemas operativos, espero sigan teninedo el apoyo y que cada dia los usuarios prefieran LINUX… ahora a descargarlo
Great job for the Mint team. The final version has become much more stable. I am very pleased for it. Thank you so much!
I’ve installed Linux Mint Debian for the 2nd time with tremendous success this time around in all I’ve done to it. And after using several of the former Ubuntu derived version over the past 4 years, this Linux Mint Debian edition is the ‘BOMB!’. Clean, fast, sharp and even fun in every way. Thanks to the learning curve through past version in my determined and permanent departure from Windows, this is so gratifying now. I’d like to encourage all the newbies to press in because the learning curve will make you solid and you’ll be thankful for all you’ve learned. I’m enjoying the benefits right now. So to Clem and all the Linux Mint team, please do keep on and up with your astounding work. It’s absolutely awesome and so appreciated, to say the very least. Best wishes to all. Michael
I can’t install Google Chrome from the google’s website, the package .deb for Debian/Ubuntu 32bits.
@ Carlos Felipe:
It’s preferable with the Chromium-browser from Mintinstall. 🙂
******* 4 WRONGS OF LINUX MINT ********
* Is based on either Ubuntu or Debian – should be based on Arch or Fedora.
* Uses female names for their codenames.
* Too greenish.
* Refuses Israeli donations.
********* 4 RIGHTS OF LINUX MINT **********
* Uses a standard sane default menu for all editions.
* Has the potential to surpass Ubuntu, which was one of the major distros.
* Has a great community.
* Desires stability while maintaining a classic desktop paradigm.
@LordOfKnowledge: We accept help and donations from everybody and every country in the World. We receive donations from Israel and one of our current sponsors is also from there. I personally offended and singled out people from this country in the past because of what was going on in the Middle East, and I apologized since. We’re grateful for all the help we can get, we’re open to everyone and we’re strong of a fantastic community in which anyone who wants to participate is welcome to do so. Where people come from, what their political and/or religious beliefs are, whether they prefer chocolate or strawberry ice cream, these make for interesting chats, but it’s got nothing to do with us. As Mint users, as Linux enthusiasts, we’re welcoming everybody in our community with open arms.
Google Chrome is better (has built in pdf reader, flash plug in and adds auto updater as well…plus you get newer versions much faster!
Had no trouble installing the deb from their site on my LMDE 64 bit….
Download the deb and save it first…then go to your download folder and right click it and open with gdebi installer…should work without a hitch…
@Grom
If you are using Universal USB Installer, doesn’t select “linux mint debian” from the menu, try old syslinux instead, it works for me!
you are going to be leaders if you make debian easy to use and setup god bless your work hours
my laptop is broke after 10 min of use but i swear i wont forget mint when i get a new one i have it on my broke one it works for a while unlike direct x that glitches and wont let you use it
# joe:
It sounds typical. Try to clean the processors air-channels and its cooling-fan from dust. Little compressed air in the opposite direction than the fan blows will do fine, if you are a bit careful. I’ve done that successfully on many computers by now. 🙂
@Clem: Thanks for your answer, and thanks for clarifying that view. I believe that had to do with something in the past, I am glad you took peace with it and apologized. This makes me more confident on Linux Mint. But we’re really anxious, really really anxious about MainMint next step… GNOME 3 heavily costumized ?
@Clem: Some of us (including myself) didn’t read on the announcement here about holding off on update pack 2 multimedia and security updates…
When i installed the re-spin iso i did do them (i think it was mostly “plug in” updates and such)….do you think we will have a problem when the “source lists” change for update pack 3 “latest”?
Also, any idea of when update pack 3 latest will be released and whether the sources will switch automatically or will need us to manually change them?
Please reply here when you get the chance…I’m sure others are wondering also….Thanks!
Craig: OK. Update Pack 3 will come shortly. Now, if you applied updates from multimedia, you probably broke some codecs which aren’t compatible with Update Pack 2 anymore. Hopefully, they’re still compatible with Update Pack 3 and when this pack is released it should fix them. If they’re not, then they’ll get fixed with Update Pack 4. Now, you know us.. we like to warn people. Sometimes we’re a little too alarmist. There isn’t any reason to panic here, even if these got broken, you can always downgrade the few packages in question.. and if you didn’t even notice the problem, then it’s not really an issue 🙂
Hi Clem, Any plans for an OEM version of LMDE?
Keep Up the Good Work on this Great Project of LMDE.
Fine work. Better than all the other Linux distributions. 🙂
Please make LMDE visible in DISTROWATCH!
Dear Clem,
What desktop will Linux Mint feature in the next version?
Have you tested any Gnome 3 customization to elect this as a possible candidate? Are you guys actually going to fork GNOME 2 officially? Please, tell us. We’d like to know this as soon as possible.
So, what version of GNOME is used in this release???
alfino: It’s rolling. At the moment it’s Gnome 2, but parts of it are being replaced by Gnome 3.
My fail log:
Used LMDE with great success since its introduction, until old laptop died.
New laptop, 9/11.
Installed LMDE 201108RC, updated with all new updates.
Spent two weeks tweaking/restoring old stuff/reciting spells to get it running consistently and as well as it did on my old laptop.
Installed update pack 3 (no error messages, appeared to work), which completely hosed my system — would not boot, even in recovery mode.
Had to reinstall older version and revisit the headachefest. (Headachefest still in progress)
Hi…As we know in Ubuntu based LM we have to make 3 partitions(/, swap, /home) in order to keep our data safe (music, pictures, documents, movies)and so next time when we will install the next version of LM we will keep our data safe without deleting it. In LMDE should I make only 2 partition (/, swap) in order to keep mai data safe the next time will upgrade to the next version or should I make a /home partition too?
If I’m dual booting with windows 7 should I make a 512Mb /boot partition or not?
Will LXDE releases the LXDE version?
