Many thanks to all the people who donated to us and who help to fund our project. Donations are down to about 60% of what they were last year, but they’re still quite high. In the first trimesters of 2015, 2016 and 2017 we respectively received $23k, $40k and $25k. Our development team has gotten bigger and our budget is being extended to include some administrators and designers. Other figures and metrics indicate we’re growing so this probably just reflects an exceptional year for donations in 2016.

Mint 13 EOL

Linux Mint 13 ‘Maya’ reached EOL (End Of Life). If you are using this release please follow the instructions posted on the forums by our administration team:

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=241166

Our project is 10 years old. It had many highs and lows but if I had to point at the most significant issue we had to overcome I would point at the loss of GNOME 2 in Linux Mint 12. I remember this development cycle as one of the most intense we ever went through and the implementation of Cinnamon in Linux Mint 13 alongside a stable MATE edition was a huge relief for us. Linux Mint 13 brought a solution to that problem which unlike MGSE in Mint 12 was solid, viable and didn’t break with the past. This release is the one I remember the most fondly, it has a special meaning for me also because of its codename.

Sonya

Linux Mint 18.2 will also have a very meaningful codename and a special place in the heart of one of our developers.

I would like to address my support and my deepest sympathy to Michael Webster, one of our friends within the development team, for the loss of his wife Sonya.

I can’t think of anything more painful than losing a loved one. We feel a lot of fraternity and sadness after what happened.

It is an honor for us to be able to commemorate her name.

Farewell Sonya and to you Michael, it is a real pleasure and privilege to be developing with you. I hope you do well.

MATE 1.18 coming to LMDE

Version 1.18 of the MATE desktop environment is coming to LMDE this week. This is an important update because the entire desktop is now built against GTK3.

To prepare for this update, the team ported mintMenu to GTK3 and is now adapting themes and ironing out issues.

Big changes in Cinnamon 3.4

The Cinnamon Settings Daemon is responsible for power management, X settings, input devices, screen resolution and rotation and many other aspects of the desktop environment. In previous versions it was run as a single process called cinnamon-settings-daemon. When something went wrong it was hard to troubleshoot which part of it was responsible for the issue and if it crashed everything went down.

In the upcoming Cinnamon 3.4 the settings daemon will be split into multiple processes. Each plugin (i.e. area of responsibility) will run its own process, making it easy to identify excessive CPU or memory usage and isolating crashes to only affect a particular plugin without impacting the rest of the desktop.

Similarly, Nemo (the file manager) will be split into two separate processes. One for the desktop icons, which will run in isolation, and one for the file manager windows.

To provide improvements in terms of performance and memory usage, CJS (the Cinnamon Javascript Interpreter) was rebased on a newer version of GJS (its GNOME ancestor). It’s still compatible with mozjs24 but it also gained compatibility with mozjs38. For now it will continue to use mozjs24 in LMDE but it will run on a backported mozjs38 in Linux Mint 18.2.

Last but not least, Nemo might get a desktop grid in Cinnamon 3.4.

Cinnamon Spices website

The Spices website is now fully ready:

https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com

It supports oauth authentication via Google, Facebook and Github and lets you post comments and like your favorite Cinnamon spices.

The maintenance of the spices themselves continues on Github. We’re getting ever closer to a situation where every single applet, desklet, extension and theme “just works”. Localization support and translations are also being added on a daily basis so 3rd party elements in your desktop environment appear in your own language.

This is a huge improvement for Cinnamon because the quality of its spices has a impact on how it is perceived.

The security aspects are significant as well. On the maintenance side, we moved from a workflow where anonymous people could upload code to a website and have it run by users on their own desktop, to one where each change is tracked, reviewed and version controlled publicly on Github. On the server side, we moved from in-house accounts where we had to store emails and passwords (information we do not need ourselves) to delegating authentication to 3rd party services such as Google/Facebook/Github via oauth.

We’re delighted with all these changes. I hope you’ll enjoy the website and the spices going forward.

Many thanks to all the developers involved in all these changes, I won’t name them.. there’s quite a few 🙂

Display Manager

I’m happy to confirm that Linux Mint 18.2 will switch to the LightDM display manager.

Though, because of its close ties with Unity, GNOME, Ubuntu and indicators, unity-greeter will not be used.

It was forked to develop a similar yet independent greeter called Slick-Greeter.

Slick-Greeter looks like Unity-Greeter but provides the following benefits:

  • It is cross-distribution and should work pretty much anywhere.
  • All panel applets are embedded. No external indicators are launched or loaded.
  • No settings daemon are launched or loaded.
  • It supports HiDPI.
  • Sessions are validated. If a default/chosen session isn’t present on the system, the greeter scans for known sessions in /usr/share/xsessions and replaces the invalid session choice with a valid session.
  • Screenshots can be taken by pressing PrintScrn.
  • It is graphically configurable (via another project called lightdm-settings)

Other news

We’ve got both good and bad news this month… I’ll start with the bad news.

Last month we hinted at the possibility of a partnership and the manufacturing of Linux Mint laptops.  This won’t happen just yet. We were seduced by the quality of the laptops but we didn’t think the design was unique enough. In particular it looked too similar to a MacBook (which is a very good thing for a laptop really, but it didn’t work for us). I’m confident we’ll do a “MintBook” one day, but we’ll take our time, it might be aluminum, it might be another material, it will certainly be a great unit the day it happens but it will also need to feel very special.

And now the good news. If you’re a fan of the series “Mr Robot” and eagerly awaiting Season 3, keep your eyes peeled the next time you see Elliot on a computer 😉

Many thanks to all the people who donate to us and support our project. We received almost $8,000 in February from 412 people. Many thanks to my fellow developers also and to our partners, it’s a real pleasure to be working with you all.

MintBox Mini Pro and Airtop

Our first impressions of the Mini Pro and the Airtop were right.

A detailed preview of these two computers was posted on Segfault at http://segfault.linuxmint.com/2017/03/mintbox-mini-pro-airtop-preview/.

I was very impressed with them. Compulab computers have always felt unique and they’ve always been completely silent, but this is the first time one of them is that powerful!

It triggered some changes in the office 🙂

Xreader

The PDF and document reader, Xreader, is receiving many changes at the moment.

Within the development team, Joseph Mccullar is reviewing its user interface and revamping its sidebar and toolbar.

The application will support dark themes and symbolic icons and new buttons will be added in the toolbar to quickly switch between different view modes.

Peter Moser is fixing many bugs and porting some changes from Atril and Evince.

The application also received touch support. If you’re equipped with a touch screen you’ll be able to zoom by pinching the document or go to the next/previous page by swiping your finger.

Update Manager

We’re improving the Update Manager again.

It still has the same mission and tackles the same issues (keeping your computer safe, providing bug fixes and protecting you from regressions) but it will present things differently.

Levels will be refined to better filter updates depending on their level of impact on the operating system and without worrying about their origin. Most updates will be level 2. Application updates which do not impact the OS will be level 1. Tookits and desktop environments or libraries which affect multiple applications will be level 3. Kernels and sensitive system updates will be level 4. As for level 5 it will be very rare (no updates qualify in there yet and none should unless something goes very wrong upstream) and it will be dedicated to non-recommended broken/dangerous updates.

The Manager will insist on staging and reviewing updates depending on their level. The notion of updates vs regression is central and these core concepts need to be understood by users, but presenting them without enough guidance leads to indecision and incomprehension. We’ve seen bloggers and Debian developers alike completely miss the point on this, so we had to present things differently and make things simpler by adding explicit recommendations here and there for users to make an actual strategy.

A large help section will be shipped with the Update Manager. It will go much more into details than before to make sure core concepts are well understood by users. What are updates? What are regressions? What are the different types of updates? How important are they? What are levels and policies? etc etc…

Regressions will be presented as an inherent aspect of development rather than something users should be scared about. The idea is to contain the regression, to understand what it can affect before experiencing it and to be prepared to tackle it, more so than to avoid it. Levels and policies will be presented in a way that guide users to apply safe updates often, but to review and to apply sensitive updates individually.

Users will be given more information on how to find help, how to distinguish between mandatory and optional updates, security patches and bug fixes.

More information will also be given on kernels and security updates and we will insist on the importance of security. There are a few developers and fanboys out there who are working very hard on giving us the reputation of an unsafe operating system and which recommend our users switch to a distribution which gives no information about regressions and which has been hacked twice as much as ours. It has to stop obviously and so although it is pretty obvious, we will state how important security is, black on white for everyone to see.

Despite a few cosmetic bugs highlighted by Ubuntu’s recent misstep on kernel 4.4.0-67, kernel updates management worked really well in 18.1. The documentation related to kernels will be improved though. We’ll make it clearer how to force grub to appear, how to select a kernel, how to check drivers and DKMS status, and how to remove the kernel you’re currently using.

Last but not least, advanced Linux users will be able to automate updates by writing scripts, routines or cron jobs thanks to a new CLI called “mintupdate-tool”. This tool will support all the features present in the Update Manager including level selection, security updates, kernel updates, blacklisting, and it will let you list and/or apply updates.

Display Manager

Linux Mint 18.2 could ship with LightDM and unity-greeter by default.

We’ve been testing this display manager as an alternative to MDM and adding support where it was missing and the results are promising.

We’ve been developing a tool called lightdm-settings to make it more easily configurable:

The end result isn’t as full-featured, as configurable or themeable as MDM but it looks quite nice.

LightDM brings a feature which we support in Cinnamon already, but which isn’t present with MDM: The ability to open guest-sessions (i.e. if enabled, a guest can log in, his/her user account is created on the fly, no data is saved persistently and everything is gone when he/she logs out).

LightDM’s code and design are modern, its greeter uses modern toolkits and interactions between the greeter and the daemon are much simpler than in MDM.

Just like PulseAudio or Systemd, it’s also a component which has become standard in most Linux distributions.

Ubuntu hardcodes references to LightDM in many places so it also simplifies maintenance and troubleshooting if Linux Mint aligns itself on the display manager (MDM does not work in Ubuntu for instance, due to these hardcoded references and requires patches to integrate it properly with Plymouth, Upstart, NVIDIA Prime, etc..  in Linux Mint).

Unity-greeter is loosely tied to Unity, its scope is restricted to Ubuntu and it’s not compatible with Debian (which could be an issue long-term for LMDE). It wasn’t decided yet whether LMDE would continue to use MDM, or lightdm-gtk-greeter or if we were to produce a cross-distro version of unity-greeter. We’re still testing and integrating the OS around LightDM to make sure everything works well.

Other news

Ubuntu and Linux Mint were mentioned briefly in Episode 18 of the new MacGyver series. It was short but it was funny.

Linux Mint might be featured in the upcoming pilot episode of a popular American drama–thriller television series. We’re very excited about it and we can’t wait to see it happen. More on this when it does 🙂

We’re talking to a manufacturer and considering a partnership on the production of a premium quality laptop. Just like the MintBox, we’re interested in producing something unique that people will love. Again, I can’t say too much before it actually happens, but we’re excited about this as well 🙂

Netflix now works out of the box in Linux with Firefox. Thanks to Mozilla for implementing the necessary DRM support (that actually happened a long time ago) and to Netflix for not blocking Firefox anymore.

Last but not least, we finally purchased a Wacom device in order to fix some of the bugs related to graphics tablets. I’d like to thank Wacom users for their patience. Sorry it took us so long. We’ll be tackling these bugs very soon now and improving Wacom support going forward.

The ISO images for LMDE 2 “Betsy” are being updated. This is the stable release for these new images.

LMDE 2 Betsy Cinnamon Edition

LMDE 2 “Betsy” was released in 2015.

If you are not familiar with it, here is an extract from its original announcement:

LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) is a very exciting distribution, targeted at experienced users, which provides the same environment as Linux Mint but uses Debian as its package base, instead of Ubuntu.

LMDE is less mainstream than Linux Mint, it has a much smaller user base, it is not compatible with PPAs, and it lacks a few features. That makes it a bit harder to use and harder to find help for, so it is not recommended for novice users.

LMDE is however slightly faster than Linux Mint. Life on the LMDE side can be exciting. There are no point releases in LMDE 2, except for bug fixes and security fixes base packages stay the same, but Mint and desktop components are updated continuously. When ready, newly developed features get directly into LMDE 2, whereas they are staged for inclusion on the next upcoming Linux Mint point release. Consequently, Linux Mint users only run new features when a new point release comes out and they opt-in to upgrade to it. LMDE 2 users don’t have that choice, but they also don’t have to wait for new packages to mature and they usually get to run them first. It’s more risky, but more exciting.

LMDE 2 received many updates in the last 2 years, including many improvements which were ported from Linux Mint as well as all the new versions of MATE, Cinnamon and the Xapps.

This release provides a new set of installation images for LMDE 2 which includes all these updates.

System requirements:

  • 512MB RAM (1GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
  • 9GB of disk space (20GB recommended).
  • Graphics card capable of 800×600 resolution (1024×768 recommended).
  • DVD drive or USB port.

Notes:

  • The 64-bit ISO can boot with BIOS or UEFI.
  • The 32-bit ISO can only boot with BIOS.
  • The 64-bit ISO is recommend for all modern computers (Almost all computers sold in the last 10 years are equipped with 64-bit processors).

Upgrade instructions:

  • No upgrade is needed. If you are running LMDE 2, you already have access to all the updates included in this re-release.
  • If you downloaded the BETA ISO images you do not need to download the images again. No critical bugs were found, the BETA images went gold and are now released as STABLE.

A set of 32-bit ISO images is also available at https://www.linuxmint.com/download_all.php.

Integrity and authenticity checks:

Once you have downloaded an image, please verify its integrity and authenticity.

Anyone can produce fake ISO images, it is your responsibility to check you are downloading the official ones.

Enjoy!

We look forward to receiving your feedback. Thank you for using Linux Mint and have a lot of fun with this new release!
