LMDE in brief

  • Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) is a semi-rolling distribution based on Debian Testing.
  • It’s available in both 32 and 64-bit as a live DVD with MATE/Cinnamon or Xfce.
  • The purpose of LMDE is to look identical to the main edition and to provide the same functionality while using Debian as a base.

FAQ

1. Is LMDE compatible with Ubuntu-based Linux Mint editions?

No, it is not. LMDE is compatible with Debian, which isn’t compatible with Ubuntu.

2. Is LMDE fully compatible with Debian?

Yes, 100%. LMDE is compatible with repositories designed for Debian Testing.

3. What is a semi-rolling distribution?

Updates are constantly fed to Debian Testing, where users experience frequent regressions but also frequent bug fixes and improvements. LMDE receives “Update Packs” which are tested snapshots of Debian Testing. Users can experience a more stable system thanks to update packs, or switch their sources to follow Testing, or even Unstable, directly to get more frequent updates.

4. How does LMDE compare to the Ubuntu-based editions?

Pros:

  • You don’t need to ever re-install the system. New versions of software and updates are continuously brought to you.
  • It’s faster and more responsive than Ubuntu-based editions.

Cons:

  • Although it’s using Romeo for unstable packages, LMDE continuously changes as it receives updates and new software. Compared to a frozen version of Linux Mint which changes very little once it’s publicly released, it’s not as stable. Things are likely to break more often but fixes can also come quicker. For this reason, LMDE requires a deeper knowledge and experience with Linux, dpkg and APT.
  • Debian is a less user-friendly/desktop-ready base than Ubuntu. Expect some rough edges.

Additional notes:

  • About the installer: The live installer is developed from scratch with Debian in mind. It’s configurable and it can be re-used by other Debian-based distributions. We noticed a lack in live technologies and in live Debian installers, so we’re happy to take the lead on this. If you’re a developer and you’re interested in using it, have a look at its source repository and don’t hesitate to contact us so we can help you fork it and merge upcoming changes between our two projects.
  • About bugs: Please use this blog to report bugs.
  • About the media: It comes as a liveDVD. Locales work differently in Debian and the package base requires more space.
  • Dedicated chat room: #linuxmint-debian is open to LMDE users on irc.spotchat.org.

  • Linux Mint 12 KDE was approved for a stable release and should come out either today or tomorrow.
  • Our new partnership with Blue Systems improved the quality of the Linux Mint KDE edition as well as the Netrunner distribution and brought in a significant and predictable source of income, allowing us to welcome an extra full-time developer.
  • Following the feedback we gathered on Gnome Shell after the release of Linux Mint 12, it was clear that despite our efforts with MATE and MGSE, we still didn’t manage to reach our goals and to offer Gnome 2 a valid alternative. Some people were enthusiastic about the new alternatives, others were disappointed. For this reason and in an effort to please a wider portion of our user base, we decided to continue to support MATE and to develop a new desktop called Cinnamon. MATE 1.2 should be out soon. Cinnamon 1.2 is already out and available to Linux Mint 12 users via the repositories.
  • Update Pack 4 should hit the “incoming” LMDE repository in the coming weeks and provide MATE, Cinnamon, GNOME 3 and Gnome Shell to LMDE users.
  • Finally, on behalf of Linux Mint I would like to thank all the people who help us. Whether it’s financially (like the people listed above who donated or sponsored us) or by other means. At the end of last year we lost our main source of income, and since Gnome 3 we lost our main desktop, a vital upstream component… it was tough to get back on our feet but we did it, we’re now as healthy and stronger than before and with MATE and Cinnamon we’re not relying on other projects and inadequate solutions, we now have the technology and resources to take matters into our own hands and to build the components we need to reach our goals and provide you with better releases after each cycle. It’s extremely tough, but even though we’re only half-way there we’re confident and your support, your feedback, and the trust so many of you have in us is extremely motivating. Reaching the #1 spot in the media and the press was also an important milestone, along with commercial agreements and upcoming partnerships (I’ll detail them one by one as they get finalized), we’re getting closer, every day, to a situation where we’re empowered to take on anything we need, and so when something doesn’t properly fit in with our vision of the desktop or doesn’t provide us with a solution to satisfy your needs based on your feedback, replacing it with something that does now gets easier and easier. These are tough times and a lot of really hard work is required, but the challenges ahead are also very exciting, we know exactly what we want to achieve and the support from the community and the media attention we’re getting right now are catalyzing our efforts and making it easier for us to achieve our goals.   • Linux Mint 12 was released. As expected, the introduction of MGSE, Gnome 3 and MATE received an outstanding success, while the disappearance of Gnome 2 was identified by some as an important regression.
  • Now more than ever, people need more choice. As many Gnome 2 users will face a switch, either when older releases reach end of life, or when LMDE switches as well, it’s extremely important we continue to improve the user experience on both MGSE and MATE, while providing additional desktop alternatives (KDE being our main priority).
  • MGSE significantly improved post-release and received updates and bug fixes on an almost daily basis.
  • MATE received critical bug fixes and is now much more stable than it was in the RC and even in the stable release. The momentum it gained by being part of this release helped it tremendously. MATE is more well-known, and it’s starting to attract developers. A website was created for MATE and the code is now managed by a team, which I joined as project manager. As MATE becomes more and more full featured and as it is gaining in stability, we’re considering releasing a dedicated MATE edition.
  • Work on the KDE and LXDE editions started. The Linux Mint staff was increased to 3 full-time members this December in an effort to bring alternative desktop choices to users in a timely manner.
  • The donations we received this month were simply amazing. This is an all-time high since the creation of the project and the support we’ve been getting from the community during this release has been fantastic. The figures speak for themselves, $9,175 in total, 335 people offering help via donations, 150 sponsors, and this is just the visible tip of the iceberg, the tangible financial support! We’re also receiving patches, suggestions, ideas, bug fixes, and help in so many other ways. The IRC and forums are booming with people helping each others. There’s a lot to be proud of when you’re part of such a community. Many thanks for your support and to everyone out there in the community who help make Linux Mint better.
