Description of the problem

It is not possible to install Skype, Google Earth or any 32-bit application in Linux Mint 14 RC 64-bit.

Cause of the problem

The ability to install 32-bit applications in a 64-bit environment is commonly referred to as “Multiarch”.

An upstream change occurred in Debian’s dpkg which made the Multiarch configuration in Ubuntu obsolete. That configuration was changed in Ubuntu and moved from dpkg to Ubiquity.

Linux Mint uses an older version of Ubiquity by default and the problem wasn’t detected during QA. It impacts the two 64-bit editions of Linux Mint 14 RC.

Workaround

To enable Multiarch, open a terminal and type the following commands:

  • sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
  • apt update

Solution

This issue will be fixed manually in the stable release of Linux Mint 14.

In other words, if you’re running the 64-bit RC of Linux Mint 14, please apply the workaround. If you’re planning on waiting for the stable release you don’t need to worry about this issue.

Update (2012.11.04)

The description of the cause of the problem was edited to reflect the fact that this issue is specific to Linux Mint. 32-bit support works out of the box in Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit. The relevant changes in Ubiquity were overlooked by the Linux Mint team. Apologies to the Ubuntu developers for linking to the wrong bug report and creating confusion about this.

This month’s “developer of the month” is: Michael Webster (mtwebster)!

In terms of commits, Michael is the 4th biggest contributor to the Cinnamon project. Many of the late fixes going in the Cinnamon 1.6 series came from him. This month, he focused on Nemo, the Cinnamon file manager and gave it numerous fixes and a lot of new features:

  • View buttons
  • GTK Bookmarks support in MoveTo/CopyTo
  • Support for Thunderbird, Balsa and Evolution
  • Proper Open as Root support
  • Set as Wallpaper

The result is a fantastic application which complements the improvements and refinements of Cinnamon 1.6 and makes the desktop even more comfortable to use.

The improved file browser will be featured in Linux Mint 14 and backported to Linux Mint 13 and LMDE.

News and summary:

  • Linux Mint 14 MATE Edition and Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon Edition passed QA and were approved for an RC release yesterday. They should be announced in the coming days.
  • Both MATE 1.4 and Cinnamon 1.6 bring significant improvements to their previous releases. They will be backported to Linux Mint 13 and LMDE.
  • The stable release of Linux Mint 14 will be available at the end of this month for MATE and Cinnamon.
  • The following releases are planned for December 2012: Linux Mint 14 Xfce, Linux Mint 14 KDE, LMDE UP6.
  • Improvements in live-installer and a new tool called DDM which simplifies the installation of 3rd party drivers are also planned for LMDE. Depending on how fast they progress, new LMDE ISOs based on UP6 might be released in December or in January.
