  1. @clem and team.
With each Mint release I am thinking ‘it doesn’t get any better than this’
and each new release proves my thinking wrong. Tessa is excellent on my
5 year old workstations out of the box–all internal and added hardware working *.*
Thank you so much for this.
The donation box gets a little extra this month.

    1. Details of the upgrade procedure from 19 to 19.1 will be made available within the next few days, Stigman (check the blog for the announcement).

    1. Hi Tichun,

We’re quite happy with the 5 years support strategy, it means supporting up to 3 LTS releases concurrently (plus LMDE) and focusing on 2 dev targets, we think that’s good for users and it’s something we can commit to. The change upstream is good for servers and for the package base but it doesn’t impact us.

    2. The extra 5 years of support for Ubuntu 18.04 from Canonical is primarily for businesses and I believe there is a cost involved.

  2. From a fresh 19.1 install, or a live CD, if you go to “Appearance -> Theme -> Select Mint-X”, and then go to “Appearance -> Theme -> Customize -> Window Border -> Select “Spidey””, the top of the menu bar for in focus windows looks wrong based on the behavior in Mint 18.X and before.

I’ve included screenshots of 19.1 vs 18.3 behavior. It looks like this issue also existed in Mint 19.

Mint 18.3 is the top image, Mint 19.1 is the bottom image.

Thanks for another great release! If this is possible for me to fix on my own, please let me know, but I was not able to find out how to do so.

    1. Also, I just noticed that the icon for the window is missing from the upper left corner of the window, too.

    2. It’s not a support request, it’s a bug report that I am hoping the devs will see. I’ve previously seen bug reports being posted in comments for releases.
The last line is being polite to them in case it is somehow my error, but testing on a fresh live CD, it’s more likely that something, somewhere, broke the theme.

  3. Having upgraded my Fitlet2 to Cinnamon 19.1 I only had to wait one day for the MATE upgrade to come on line. This morning upgraded my Samsung 110 netbook with MATE 19.1 along with Lightning extension to Thunderbird as per instructions. Again, simplicity itself!
    Thank you all, Mint team.

  4. I have waited for things to get settled down so I never installed the 19 BETA, I am using 18.3

Do I really have to burn a new DVD to do this??? It’s going to have to wait if so, I’ve used all of my DVDs period and I did a fresh installation and upgrades from my old 18.1 DVD. Christmas slays your wallet like St. George.

And it already looks like there are a couple hiccups that should be fixed first according to others. I’ve been hoping I would find the upgrade path in my 18.3 menus.

    1. If you have a thumb drive, you can use that instead of a DVD. Not as timely to make up, and a lot faster to load up the new version

  5. There is no upgrade path from 18.3 to 19.1 without a new DVD? It will have to wait a couple weeks then, I’m out of DVDs and broke.

    1. I reloaded this PC after my old one had a catastrophic failure (the power supply CAUGHT FIRE) and my nephew gave this one that I set up with Mint back to me, and I had to go find my old 18.1 DVD and then being it up as it is. I’ve waited to do anything beyond that because it’s the only other PC I have that I could set up easily (and I still use Brand W v. 7 and have no more licenses left so I can’t just get rid of an OS). I stick with stable releases, I’m not a wizard or something, this has been a learning experience and not a total immersion. I use Mint as I would W.

  6. Manually changing the default PDF viewer (MIME type:application/pdf) in /usr/share/applications/defaults.list has no effect. This seems to be specific to PDF since changing the default application for other types does work properly.

This worked on 19 but not on 19.1.

    1. To remove them:
touch ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css and add this line:
      .undershoot.top, .undershoot.right, .undershoot.bottom, .undershoot.left { background-image: none; }

    2. Have the same issue here Jerry but also when you open your menu and click on all applications you see the dashed lines. Running Mate 19 Tara and tried the solution from Theor:”To remove them:
touch ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css and add this line:
      .undershoot.top, .undershoot.right, .undershoot.bottom, .undershoot.left { background-image: none; } ” however this didn’t solve the issue. It’s strange but thankfully not affecting any functions.

    3. Hi Erwin,
sorry to see it doesnt work for you. To be honest, i used this solution in 18.3 and there it works. I am not on 19 yet.

  7. Just installed 19.1 MATE 64bit with the Mint-Y-Dark theme and the Mint-Y-Dark symbols.
I’ve also set the background of Caja to “Fibers” which is a light background, where the font color of the folder names and the file names is supposed to be black, but the font color is still white. So, these names are invisible, now. How can I fix this without moving to another background, please?

    1. @ Jim: sorry.
If you want an image small enough for a CD (not a DVD)… it will never happen.
Linux Mint is much too big and they do not create smaller versions with less stuff.

  8. Sir,
I install Linux Mint MATE 19 and it’s pretty good, my problem now is the printer. i have EPSON L360 printer i have no printer driver for EPSON L360. is there any body can help me. thankz for every one out there.

  9. @ Peter E
Could it be, Jim just confused CD with DVD?
I have to confess, I do this quite often, too, calling a DVD just CD, because both are discs.

  10. sudo apt install git libtool pkg-config libwnck-dev libwnck-3-dev debhelper gtk3-engines-xfce libcairo2-dev libdecoration0-dev libxrender-dev libx11-dev gettext intltool intltool-debian libltdl-dev libtool autopoint automake build-essential libxi-dev
    git clone https://github.com/compiz-reloaded/emerald
    git clone https://github.com/compiz-reloaded/emerald-themes
    cd emerald
    ./autogen.sh
    ./configure –prefix=/usr
    make
    sudo make install
go to ccsm>extra>windows decoration>command> emerald –replace
These are all the steps for emerald. Why it cannot be done in mint itself

  11. I believe that there may be a problem with the PIX application on mint 19.1.
I could view my videos using PIX on my Mint 19 installation but when I installed
19.1 I could no longer view NEWLY imported videos in PIX – note: I could view
the videos which had PREVIOUSLY been imported using PIX while I was still
on version 19. I then reinstalled version 19 and the problem with not being able to
view the videos in PIX went away, thus this seems to indicate to me that there
is some problem with the PIX application on 19.1 or perhaps some dependencies or
something else that has been introduced in 19.1 that is interfering with PIX application.
    Thanks.

    1. Note: I notice that the version of PIX on 19.1 is 2.0.3 while the older version on Mint 19 is 1.8.2. Perhaps the version on Mint 19.1 needs to be at least temporarily put back to 1.8.2. I tried installing the older version of PIX on another machine on which I still had Mint 19.1 and I could not get it to install even though I had completely uninstalled the 2.0.3 version. The older version install attempt kept saying that a newer version was already installed.

  12. Can anybody tell me why I should upgrade from Tara to Tessa?
I see the automatic update possibility but really see no reason why I should do it, especially not after my system is just upgraded to MATE 19 coming from LMDE2. Any wise comments would be appreciated.

  13. Nice, but I already found a problem: moving windows stutters heavily (Compiz activated with wobbly windows activated, NVidia 390-driver).

Have not seen this heavy stuttering before the update. Very annoying.

  14. AfterReplacing Mint 18.2 Mate by Mint 19.1 Mate on a MintBox2, almost everything went fine, but there are two issues:
    (1) The character selection plugin (for desktop panels) works only with the TraditionalOk Theme
    (2) The selection of the input method framework (e.g. fctix and IBus) only is possible with the Mint-Y theme. With other themes the window frame either is broken or disappears completely.

By the way, I don’t understand why I am asked to switch to fctix. I stick with IBus for traditional Chinese and Japanese.

One nice thing: I had /home encrypted on an own partition and could continue working with the old data (Firefox, Thunderbird and everything else).

Thanks to the whole Linux Mint team and my best wishes to you for the next year!
    Goetz

  15. An excellent distro is 19.1 without any doubt. Just some issue. Still can not run with the driver of my NVIDIA (340 and 390) due to the dark screen that appears and makes me change and come back to the xserver-xorg. Another issue is even with xserver-xorg during watching online tv channels (with google chrome) the screen freeze for a while (around 4 seconds) and automatically get ok.

    1. I used to only used Nvidea cards because they were stable in Linux. Now I avoid Nvidia and use the stock onboard Intel video for an issue free experience.

  16. Sometimes when saving a download file to the desktop with the Chromium browser the desktop continues to show the filename.ext.crdownload temporary file long after Chromium has removed it. The only remedy is to hit F5 to refresh the desktop.

  17. I really don’t know what the developers are doing.
You should have a BIG RED WARN that home directory encryption is broken inside install.
It is only hidden in the middle of release notes in small letters.
Then, they tell you is better to FULL DISK ENCRYPT, but the encrypted lvm install is still broken.
If you have more partitions, it WONT work to click encrypt lvm on free space with 1 click.
If you chose to MANUALLY handle partitions to install, you can not make LVM with installer gui.
You have the option to create encrypted partitions… But when you use, at least for me, gives a swap error in installer.
Do not launch another version without fixing that mess.

  18. My experience with 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Mint 19.1 on my old AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
Trying to run from bootable DVD, the 32 bit version shown high res logo until the last second – then screen gets messed up. While shutting down the screen becomes stable for a second before shut down??? Starting the 32 bit version in compatibility mode – the screen is stable in low res but can’t log onto wifi, even after HDD install, so can’t update, so I give up.

Next I tried the 64 bit version – that one was stable from bootable DVD and installed OK. Some applications that I used for years on Mint 17.x 32 bit (i.e. sweet home 3D, steam {flatpak & normal}, scilab, etc) are now giving problems. Firefox, LibreOffice, FreeCad and few others seem to work OK.
The screen seems to crash often on Mint 19.1 – I never experienced that on 17.x I guess new Mint does not like my old NVIDIA 6150se

    1. NO. but its not Mint, Ubuntu has terrible issues with this chipset in general. I eventually just replaced it.

  19. Saludos, amigos. Tengo un PC antiguo equipado con procesador intel celeron D, quiero instalarle la versión mate de linuxmint. Me gustaria saber si este procesador que mencioné me correría esta versión, gracias.

  20. Timeshift is utterly useless piece of garbage. Why? Well …
    1. It doesn’t save on ntfs partitions
    2. It cant create partitions on new disks
    3. It cant initialize new disks
    4. plays back BACKups only on beforehand with i.e. gparted and ext* formatted disks BUT doesn’t re-partition to backed up partition setup

    In other words:
You can backup as much as you want. As soon as your old disk says “Bye-Bye” and you dont know your exact partition scheme, you are screwed

    1. That’s exactly why I’m using “Acronis True Image ! It is THE BEST backup software I ever used! You can do anything with this beauty!!!” It is worthed any penny!

  21. Не могу поставить версии 19.1 пишет при установке ошибку, извините прерванно, отправьте и бла бла бла…

  22. Hi Thanks for the new release!
I have downloaded the 19.1 MATE 64-bit file linuxmint-19.1-mate-64bit.iso using Transmission, it completed successfully. I did the ISO verification and gave me a warning “there is data after the end of the file”. When I try to burn it into a blank DVD, it does not allow me to proceed. Please check on this, thanks!

  23. hi clem, can you add cinnamon-screensaver features (like mediaplayer control, volume control, etc) on mate edition screensaver so we can have access on mediaplayer while screen locked. thanks

  24. Deletions
I see that my Comments are attracting the usual reaction, Deletion of uncomfortable information, rather like Churchill’s “warmongering”, whilst other folk provide distracting and deliberately misleading comments
As to “google” or default “yahoo” I prefer to use “duckduck go”, but good luck to more aware folk.
I wonder how long this Post will survive for.

    1. Bruce R: this is a Blog… so don’t expect much here.
Try the Mint Forums for less censorship (but you my find your posts get “edited” over there)
