Monthly News – November 2016

Many thanks for your donations and for your support.

The latest XApps and the new MATE 1.16 desktop environment were pushed towards the Linux Mint 18.1 “Serena” and LMDE 2 “Betsy” repositories.

We just finished addressing some issues with MDM, and we’re currently working on a few compatibility issues which affect the Cinnamon screensaver in LMDE and in Slackware before announcing the official release of Cinnamon 3.2.

We were expecting Cinnamon 3.2 to be out at the end of October and this probably will push the release of Linux Mint 18.1 into the month of December.

Although these issues do not affect Mint 18.x, I believe this is a good thing for the upcoming release. It’s given us more time to react to early reports coming from Arch Linux and to fix many small bugs already. This is something which usually happens during the BETA phase. We’re also seeing more and more artists updating their themes in preparation for Cinnamon 3.2.

If you are waiting for 18.1, I would like to thank you for your patience. It might seem long right now, but whenever it happens, looking back at the release, only quality will matter.

  1. Hi Clem. I don’t know if you know it, but there is a recently purchased MicroFocus division called Serena (very strong financial software).
I know it because we use it in my work.
I’m telling you these because maybe maybe MicroFocus don’t want that you use the name “Serena”
    Regards from Buenos Aires.

Edit by Clem: No matter what codename we use, we’ll always find some other product or company using it as well. I’m not concerned about this at all, especially when it’s only down to usage, when this usage is widespread (either a common noun, word or first name) and when its invention or origin has nothing to do with the projects or companies mentioned.

  2. Ok but will lm 18.1 kde feature latest kde lts version? or will it be using the kubuntu version?

please, go for the lts kde 5.8.3.x..

Edit by Clem: It will use the Kubuntu version.

  3. Update: The compatibility issues between LMDE and cinnamon-screensaver are now all fixed and Cinnamon 3.2 reached the LMDE repositories today.

  4. Indeed, quality matters more than speed! 🙂
Off topic: can you perhaps push mintupdate 5.1.3 to Mint 18 and Mint 17.x? The new level 4 classification for Nvidia drivers and ubuntu-drivers-common is useful in those as well…

Edit by Clem: Yes, but I can’t do it just yet and not like that. It needs testing and it would lack translations. I might branch out though.

  5. “It might seem long right now, but whenever it happens, looking back at the release, only quality will matter.” – Definitely. Please take the time needed and follow steps that (technically) make sense. Thank you for your efforts, Clem and Team!

  6. I’ve just installed MATE 1.16 on LMDE2, but the XApps were not offered?

Do I have to install these by hand? If so, which packages are the XApps, and which packages do I have to uninstall (to completely remove the old pluma etc?

Edit by Clem: Oh yes, they’re optional. You can install them if you want but you don’t have to. Well, let’s see, there’s xed, xreader, xviewer, xplayer and pix.. and you would remove totem, gthumb, eog, eom, pluma, gedit, atril and evince. To some extent we also consider MDM, blueberry and nvidia-prime-applet xapps, but you probably have these already.

  7. Can you increase size of calendar applet? It`s so tiny. KDE, Windows and Gnome have much larger dates, easy to catch with an eye.

  8. “We were expecting Cinnamon 3.2 to be out at the end of October and this probably …”

Probably you mean at the end of November?

  9. Hi, CLem, there is a problem with Russian localization in Shared Folder window (which appears after share folder button). The title is Общий доступ к папке. Unfortunately, we don’t have tags in language =)

I don’t know, do you use some another project party locale or your own, so I decide to write it here.

  10. Hi Clem and Team, thanks a lot for being so busy, you really changed excessive amounts of code on github.

I saw no changelog yet, so I just tested a bit (LMDE2 Cinnamon64 in a VM) and found some bugs/glitches. I hope it’s ok to post them here:

    – Background: after log in the desktop picture looks like it has a special color effect. Choosing another picture brings it back to normal.
    – Background settings: no pictures are shown in the preview, only the folders (Rosa e.g.).
    – Lock the screen and choose change user: there’s no way to come back to the lock screen, even with the default MDM screen (Mint-X). MDM is still v. 2.0.13, is that the reason?
    – Screensaver settings: “delay before starting” set to never – the options “lock the computer after the screensaver starts” and “delay before locking” should be suppressed.
    – No bug but… The floating screensaver time is pretty, but it’s often put 0 pixels away from the border. It would look nicer if there was some space.
    – Lock screen: It would be nice if the volume bar had a mute option, to get back to the previous volume after unmute.

Edit by Clem: Thanks, we’ll send fixes via updates.

  11. #1: In Sweden the legal term for this is “renommésnyltning” (Reputation parasitism).
    https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renomm%C3%A9snyltning
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reputation_parasitism

According to the first link The Swedish Market Court has for example in a judgment, 2010:04, forbidden a company, under penalty of seven hundred and fifty thousand (750,000) SEK to use packages that can easily be confused with the packages from another company.

Once upon a time a very big software company sued a small Swedish company who manufactured a spreadsheet program called E….
However, the investigation showed that the Swedish company had developed their program long before the software giant so, in that case David won over Goliath.

  12. Great news Clem!

By the way, will this update include any upstream fixes for the PrivateInternetAccess VPN issue introduced by Ubuntu 16.04.
    https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2321293&page=2&s=b2ab5a822b4dfaf4f058fbfd724d0ab5

Whatever LM18 inherited from Ubuntu 16.04, it broke my connection to PrivateInternetAccess VPN.
I would try this solution if i knew the consequences of messing with my /usr/bin/nmcli (i never had to do anything in LM17.3)
    https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/forum/discussion/21532/pia-on-ubuntu

Edit by Clem: You don’t really need the PIA client. You can set up the connection via the settings without using any client. I’ve got a meeting with PIA next week so we’ll talk about this. We made a client for them (https://github.com/linuxmint/pia-manager) and I’m hoping it will get adopted.

  13. So given a December release, what kernel is looking to be chosen? I *really* hope it’s 4.8 or later. The graphics updates/fixes are essential for so many people.

Edit by Clem: So far it looks like 4.4.0-31. Critical regressions (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1638990, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1643226, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1640926) are preventing us from using -45 and -47. That’s the problem when you mix security and backports, you can’t guarantee stability. -31 isn’t affected by these regressions and it benefits from a larger testing window since it’s the kernel that was used in the 16.04.1 release. So at the moment, it’s our best looking option.

  14. Hi LM team,

    In lmde2 64bits cinnamon, since the 3.2 updates :
    – the panel and applets don’t respond for me. When I click, nothing happen.
    – The cinnamon process uses around 40% of my CPUs capacity.
    – The Minty theme seems broken

After trying to solve this with help in the LM-help chat, I did a fresh install but after the updates, the problem is still there.

Edit by Clem: Ask the artist to update Minty for 3.2 support. For the CPU, remove all 3rd party applets/desklets to make sure it’s not caused by one of them. Regarding the clicks, are you using fcitx/ibus? We’ve got a pending fix coming up for that. Other than that, see if it’s related to indicator support.

  15. I wonder if my issue will end up fixed.
I’ve had my secondary monitor’s display will occasionally stop updating (looks to have frozen, but cursor still moves)

    This happens seemingly randomly.
(Linux Mint 18 on a Dell Latitude e5530 with 12 GB of RAM)

Another issue I have is that in non-graphical TTYs the cursor is frozen in the upper left of the screen and no text displays (can still login and run commands, but nothing displays on screen)

I have no idea where to look to find the source of the problem.

  16. Will we see a refreshed ISO for Betsy? Lots (many downloads) of improvements since last year. Looking forward to LMDE 3.

  17. Hi Clem, I have Asus Vivobook X540SA and I installed Mint 18 but it gets frozen during shutdown and restart. Ubuntu 16.10 had the same exact problem. Will this bug get fixed for the Mint 18.1 by any chance? Thanks.

  18. print (“‘Awesome’ job as usual Clem! We can all just sit tight and wait, more than happy, take your time!”)

  19. Hi, In sound applet (cinnamon 3.2.1) does not working the mini player for rhythmbox. For vlc working perfect. How can i solve this problem?

  20. #13 Alex mentioned the calender applet. I really would enjoy a bigger calender as well. This is my wife’s biggest complaint about going from Win10 to Linux Mint 18.

As far as everything else, please take your time and get it right. I will be downloading 18.1 the day it is available. Thank you!

  21. Clem,

Thanks for the update and all the hard work all of you guys do on Mint. I know most of the time, all you hear are problems and issues but what you guys do is much appreciated out here by not just myself but the everyday linux users.

Looking forward to doing some reviews on 18.1

    Thanks again

  22. Using LMDE 2 64-bit (latest update), my monitor is rotated 90 degree (better for coding). The Login screen (not the lock screen) doesn’t account for the rotation! I know its not #1 on your list but it would be nice if this could be fixed. Weird logging in sideways!

Also when i pressed “lock screen”-> “switch user” (icon), everything visual just crashed, couldn’t even ctrl+alt+f1

    Thank you 😀

Edit by Clem: That’s not a bug. You can’t expect the system to adopt your user settings, or the DM to be affected by the DE’s configuration. It follows Xorg’s config. If you don’t want to configure Xorg to rotate the screen, then do it via xrandr and place that call in /etc/mdm/Init/Default.

  23. @kmo: Clem said we will see a refreshed ISO for Betsy this release cycle and that it is too early to talk about LMDE 3. Debian hasn’t even set a date for their next release yet.

@Herlon: Clem says in comment #3, above, that Mint’s KDE will use the Kubuntu version.

All the best to the Mint Community.

  24. Will LMDE iso ever get a refresh?
Currently not bootable for most of skylake or newer chipsets which forced me to do a “dirty”, hacky, repository exchange for standard debian or switch to normal Linux-Mint, with the latter being the case for me personally.

Love LMDE very much, but I like my desktop to have the same linux flavor as my laptop and it is sad that I have to go back to ubuntu-base which I dislike.

  25. The graphics stack is the only thing that matters to me at this point. After almost a year of random CPU+GPU hangs, wifi issues and NVMe controller resets, all I want is a stable environment.

Take your time guys, and hopefully you’ll manage to get us a newer kernel and a decent graphics stack for Skylake (Intel HD 530) and SSDs like Samsung 950 Pro (NVMe M.2).

  26. Hello to maintainers of LMDE and Thanks for the work on it.
Did update today to Cinnamon 3.2 via synaptic. There seems to be a bug now with the wallpaper-controlpanel, which has lost all the pictures, despite there are present in /usr/share/backgrounds.
    Does someone know a solution?
I switched LMDE the first time after years of using the main edition.

  27. For now, there is another problem with the software manager, at least for Mint 18 Cinammon and Mate . When I try to install something the program show a message that another application is using APT: dpkg

Edit by Clem: Please upgrade mintinstall, this was fixed in an update.

  28. I have noticed that sometimes, after I open my laptop after suspending I can see 5-20 sec my workplace, open browser e.t.c and only after this time login page appears. So, this is not secure behavior.

  29. Just downloaded Mint 18. Getting two kinds of screen freeze, a weird pattern and time and logo. Also there is a significant amount of “horsing around” to get the wifi going. I am still not sure if I have the right driver but by pulling the usb card and replugging it in another outlet, I can get Mint to see my router. Then the “horsing around” starts. Other wise it looks like an improvement. Thanks.

  30. Please post someone a easy way to share a folder to Windows10 in Linux Mint 18. With Password Protection no Public Share. Plase I’m struggling with this for a Week now.

  31. Hi!

Sometime in the last few weeks (maybe an update caused this?) the default behavior after a drag and drop has changed from move to copy. I don’t want to copy, because then I have to go back and delete the original and I would like to change the new default back to “normal” default. Anybody?

Also in the last few weeks, I’ve had Cinnamon/Nemo crash when trying to move files into a Dropbox folder and the photos I was moving have disappeared. I have Dropbox, pCloud, Spideroak mounted most of the time and when I need it my Google Drive too. When this happens, the desktop forgets my choice of desktop backgrounds (a family photo) and gives me one of the default images. It has also changed the desktop background at random boots, there are power management related times when the lock screen comes up that I’m not able to enter my password. The computer will not let me enter a password but it can see my usb keyboard still, I am able cntrl-alt-backspace out. So I set things for autologin etc. and now I’m getting a random popup error message about the keyring not being unlocked.
Currently running the Nvidia driver, but this happened with the open source driver too.

    What am I doing wrong?

  32. Hello. Please improve start up time. Linux Mint 18 Mate boots very slow on clean installation. In 17.3 version, start up is much quicker, than in version 18. Thanks.

  33. @navarro066 – There’s 3 ways to easily install all the codecs in LM 18.*.

    During install (checkbox).

In the Welcome window at first boot up (click the obvious link).

From the main menu, by clicking on “Start Menu” >> ”Sound and Video” >> ”Install Multimedia Codecs”.

Couldn’t be more obvious and it’s just and extra click so no big deal. They didn’t [xxx] up anything.

  34. Hi Clem,
Any chance the black screen get fixed when laptop is connected to the power adapter? I was watching a video then it went black on me. I had to to press the power button for it to come back. Iam running Linux Mint KDE.

  35. Note To Clem you are doing a great job and linuxmint 18 works very well
please take all the time you need with this next release
hopefully the new version of Xplayer will fix the problem I,am having
no matter what i do I cant get any of the visual effects to show while playing audio totem on 17.3 showed them just fine my choice was always GOOM i found a work around for this until it is fixed I Installed Parole Media Player and GOOM is working again
I noticed that totem the option to show visual effects is missing and it is supposed to be there and why did they change the look of totem
    it looks bad
    my system specs

    Dell Optiplex 760SFF
    4GB Ram
    1TB HDD
3.0GHZ Intel Core 2 DUO CPU
Graphics Card Intel Q43 Express Chipset
    Edition of Mint 18 XFCE
I,am Looking Forward to the new release 18.1 i,m sure it will be fantastic
Take care and have a nice day

Edit by Clem: I can confirm visualizations are broken in Xplayer. It’s a known issue but it isn’t fixed yet.

  36. Will it be possible to upgrade from Maya13 (supported till 04.2017) to Serena18.1 ?

    Regards

Edit by Clem: Hi Bruno. No I’m sorry. Technically, it “is” possible, using APT, but I wouldn’t recommend it. There’s been such a gap between 13 and 18, I would strongly suggest to backup the data and perform a fresh installation.

  37. re.49 @Bruno the ??

I ran 13 for two years before upgrading to 17 and then 18. Each time, I did a fresh installation. You can copy over the profile folders of your applications quite easily. Keeping your personal data on a separate partition is always a good idea so if you don’t already do that then now is your opportunity.

I found that each fresh installation gave me a chance to think about how I organised my Mint configuration, how I organised and stored my data and media files and how I accessed my network devices. Each time, I made changes and improvements as a results of previous experience.

    If you like 13, you’ll love 18.

  38. I wish for Linux Mint 18.1 is supported “Secure Boot” in official.
Because recent computer is almost supported to UEFI and “Secure Boot”.
And if possible, I want to use Linux Mint 18.1 on “Secure Boot” enabled into UEFI.

  39. Just installed Mint 18 (xfce) and wanted to report that 2 things do not seem to work:
OpenGL support for Intel Integrated chips is flaky (crash dumps & jitter) – the mesa driver does not seem to work correctly (Intel)

systemd is only partly working: Until today I could not find any hooks for services that should run after resume (from sleep/hibernate)
Why does Ubuntu/Mint not use the standard systemd?

MDM: Did not find a place where I could activate .xsession-errors. Logging stops after starting the X11 scripts.

  40. First of all I would like tot thank Mint team for this new release.
I would like to bring some constructive criticize on Cinnamon 3.2.1 and I hope that nobody will feel offended.
I expected to see a new menu layout with the possibility to choose between list or grid view, but instead the only improvement was to remove the arrow. Maybe it will come on the next release. I do think that Cinnamon needs a fresher look keeping the same good functionality.

What I really miss on LM/Cinnamon is:

    Functionality
    —————-
    1) Better connectivity with iPhone (maybe not possible due to close source)
    2) Evolution Mail notification when new email is received.
    3) Better Cinnamon calendar with possibility to set reminders/alarms and why not synchronization with Evolution calendar and mobile devices.
    4) “Simple Scan” add option to scan only Black & White and to select DPI.
    5) Desktop grid for the icons in order to snap them only in predefined location and avoid overlapping.
    6) Remove the online applets that are not compatible with actual version.

    Visual eye candy
    —————–
    1) More visual effects for example minimize/maximize Lamp effect, Wooby Windows similar to Plasma 5.
    2) Nicer main menu.
    3) Possibility to make the calendar bigger.

    Thank you!

  41. I hope 18.1 Cinnamon 3.2.1 does not freeze like Mint 18 x64 under Firefox 50.0. Had to revert to Firefox 48.0.1 to stop the machine from seizing completely, requiring Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to reset Cinnamon and launch a new session. Utterly FRUSTRATING having to do this twice a day.

Hi Ian: I can’t tell and I can’t help if I don’t know why it freezes. Is it Cinnamon which freezes or the entire PC? Do you see anything wrong in dmesg, syslog, .xsession-errors, looking-glass? Did you try removing 3rd party applets and extensions?

  42. Recently moved from 17.3 to 18 and found quite a few glitches. Disk IO operations that freeze up for minutes (Nemo and everything else then locks up) – may be related to the thumbnailing process(?), plus several apps have regressive behaviour – filezilla, gthumb (yes ‘pix’ forks the old gthumb) and so on. I would rather wait and have 18.1 be the best quality than rushed out to meet some arbitrary deadline. Mint has always delivered an awesome distro and I am confident 18.1 will shine.

Edit by Clem: About the IO, we think it’s related to gvfs, the bug is known here and upstream. We don’t have a fix yet but we’re aware of it and we know how to reproduce it.

  43. Great Job !
Very old Mac OS X user, and MkLinux before, thanks to Linux Mint, I am switching from Mac to Linux; first because Mac OS become more and more intrusive, more and more closed, more and more gadget and Mac hardware worse and worse (it’s impossible to change anything in it).

intel NUC + Linux Mint = Amazing equation.

  44. Mint 18.1 Cinnamon 64bit beta: Installer crashes in virtualbox 5

    at matthewls:
Which vbox version do you use, and what settings? 32 or 64bit Linux Mint? LVM encryption?

Edit by Clem: I can’t reproduce the issue. Can you run it from terminal and check /var/log/installer/debug. I’d like more info on the crash, an error message or a backtrace maybe? so I can understand what triggers and how to fix it. Also, tell us in details which options you’re choosing (including the language and if you modified the language of the live session).

  45. Hi, great work I have been using mint for a few years now and it has always worked ‘out of the box’ but the recent iteration has me scratching my head over the atheros QCA64x4 drivers which I can’t seem to make work. just wondering if this will be fixed in 18.1?

  46. Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon beta

Please rename label “Rubbish Bin” to “Trash”

    Image of another instance:
    http://imgur.com/a/9zHTf

    Thank you

Edit by Clem: In Cinnamon/Nemo’s code there are no occurences of “Rubbish bin”, only of “Trash”. The reason you see “Rubbish bin” is because of en_GB translations: https://translations.launchpad.net/linuxmint/latest/+pots/nemo/en_GB/+translate?batch=10&show=all&search=trash and https://translations.launchpad.net/linuxmint/latest/+pots/cinnamon/en_GB/+translate?batch=10&show=all&search=trash. Now, why do you see “Trash” in a few places? I’m not sure.. looking at the code, it should be translated as Rubbish bin as well.. can you create a github issue on nemo for this?

  47. In Caja, there are mixed terms ‘Wastebasket’ and ‘Rubbish Bin’. In Nemo the terms are ‘Trash’ and ‘Rubbish Bin’.

Please standardise on the ‘Wastebasket’ label (since the icon is of a basket form).

Alternatively, change the icon to a smooth surfaced container and standardise on the ‘Rubbish Bin’ label.

    Thank You

  48. LM18.1 64bit installer crash on normal installation.
The error message tells that I can sent a bug report without giving a the option to do it.

Edit by Clem: The live session is in English? Also, can you expand the more details arrow during the slideshow? It might show us exactly why it’s failing (there’s no relevant information in the logs unfortunately).

  50. Hi Clem, I reinstalled my system doing the following steps:
    1) OS language English
    2) (checked) Install third party Flash MP3…
    3) Time Zone Berlin
    4) Keyboard – German
    5) Login automatically

    Thank you

Edit by Clem: Thanks Ovari, but please stick to critical issues. We can address these during the BETA.

  52. KDE version working superfine in a Lenovo T560.

So well, that for the first time Linux is my only OS in a computer (no more dual boot or win only).

Keep up the good work !

    Thanks !

  53. Latest version of Libre Office Impress crashes regularly at my Mint 18 KDE distro. Recovery backup does not work. Hope this will improve in 18.1 because I’m used to very stable Mint distro’s for more than 4 years now 🙂 BTW the rest of 18 KDE runs smooth and fine, love it!

  54. When the LM 18.1 .iso images are released for general use, how soon after that will an upgrade via the Software Manager be available for existing LM 18 installations?

(I’m not anxious to upgrade, just wondering as a matter of interest.)

  55. In case you are same impatient as I am in waiting the upgrade to become available into LM18 you can download the LM18.1 beta ISO and install it on top of your existing LM18.
In order to keep all your settings you should only format the root partition while keeping the “/home” partition.
When the installation process ends just reboot and install the additional applications/drivers. For me the whole process took around 15 minutes.
LM18.1 beta Cinnamon is stable enough for my regular work and even playing Dota2 on steam.
The release brings small improvements everywhere, no dramatic changes as well nothing very exciting. From my humble point of view there is still some work to be done on the cosmetic aspects mainly main menu and desktop effects.
Anyway we should all be grateful that such a nice project exists and I am sure that a lot of passion, dedication and effort will be invested in the next releases as well.

    Thank you Mint team!

  56. @Clem: Can you tell us if Mint 18.1 have a good support for touchscreen ? I think you tell us that Mint 18.1 will have an option for touchscreen rotation, is it right ? Kernel of Linux Mint 18.1 is still 4.4.xx ?

Edit by Clem: Yes, well… yes and no 🙂 There’s an issue with accelerometers in kernels 4.4.x, it only starts working after a suspend/resume. Hopefully they get that fixed upstream. What’s changed in 18.1 though is that Cinnamon 3.2 now supports iio-sensors-proxy. In simpler terms, assuming the kernel handles the sensor fine, Cinnamon will auto-rotate when you move the screen. Regarding touch screen support, we added that in 18 and Cinnamon 3.0. And there’s something else we didn’t talk about yet… which is planned for 18.2, we’ll add gesture support in Xapps… so you’ll be able to swipe in xviewer to see the next picture, to pinch to zoom out etc etc..

  57. re.76 @magnificu

I tried that (on a clone/copy of my 18 installation disk) and it works well with no problems. However, I have a large number of additional applications/drivers that would need to be installed, inculding one that I had to build from source files. When I saw that it worked, I deleted the source and make/build directory (which may have been foolish of me).
I also did several configuration changes in the root partition files, some of which I can’t remember.

I’d prefer to wait for an in-place upgrade to be available. LM 18 works very well indeed so I’m happy to wait for LM 18.1 for some further time.

  58. I confirm that the new ISO “LM 18.1 Cinnamon 64 bit” installer runs properly on vbox now

I confirm that the new ISO “LM 18.1 MATE 64 bit beta” installer runs properly on vbox now

    ………….

    Thank you Mint team 🙂

PS: Any installtion hints on RAID 0 and LVM?

  59. J’ai jamais eu de soucis pour lancer & installer la 18.1 avec l’iso généré Vendredi perso (que ça soit sur machine physique ou en VM), le supposé bug “apt” était censé créer quoi comme problème ?

Edit by Clem: L’analyse technique: https://github.com/Debian/apt/issues/27.

  60. Óvári, LibreOffice branch 5.1 is maintained by Ubuntu (Canonical), he is secured.

For example, on Debian 8 Stable (distrib reputed for the security), LibreOffice is the “4.2”.

If you want the last version of LibreOffice, add the PPA repository of LO :

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt upgrade

and you are on LO 5.2.x (and 5.3 later etc..).

Edit by Clem: crifo.org est a jour oui.
