News and summary:

  • Linux Mint 13 was released, featuring MATE and Cinnamon. Both editions got a great reception in the press and within the community. We’ve been backing both desktops for a long time and it’s a real pleasure to give them some prime time with this release and to share them with you.
  • The team is currently working on KDE and Xfce editions for Linux Mint 13. After a poll was organized, it was decided the focus was going to be given to the most popular desktops within the Mint community. More focus was given to Xfce and the LXDE and Fluxbox editions which were previously only available in 32-bit were discontinued.
  • Many thanks to all the people who donated this month and to our sponsors for supporting our work.

  1. So, if I understood right, LXDE edition is now discontinued?

Not a problem for me, I love Xfce!
And, for the people that think it’s a middleweight desktop, you have to understand that it depends on how you set it up. If set up right, it can be as lightweight as LXDE, but a lot more functional 😀

  2. Who is this big new Sponsor?
Does they spent money or does they have an developer how works on Mint now?
    Its great anyway!

  3. Plus One to Flaque Response, so looking forward to the XFCE version, which I guess might even satisfy the great Torvalds, who knows.

  4. Great job, team Mint.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that XFCE would only be available as a LMDE flavor and not as a “regular” Mint version. Does this mean XFCE in LMDE will be discontinued?

    Thanks for all you do!

  5. I forgot about this:

    Is there a chance you’ll ship Mint 13 with Xfce 4.10 ?
It has many improvements over 4.8, and considering it’s already packaged and available in an official PPA (ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.10), I guess it’s a viable thing to consider! 🙂

You could set yourself apart with something like this, and it’ll make all your Xfce users happier 😀

  6. It is great to see the Mint project doing so well. The team deserves success and a decent revenue to keep the project going.

  7. I’m not a GNOME Shell lover, but according to the poll, the number of GNOME Shell users is about the same as the number of KDE users. Turning the Cinnamon version to a GS version shouldn’t be much work except for some tweaking and artwork (of which some can be trivially ported) since they both use the same base. I believe many will appreciate it if a GS version is made.

  8. Great work, you guys obviously got a great sponsorship from Blue Systems. It’s good to see that you have some excellent financial support.

I have been very happy so far with Mint 13 Maya 64bit Cinnamon. I am running this on an older Dell Latitude E6400. I have not had any issues with the install process or during use so far. I installed the RC and upgraded it to the final release. Cinnamon is very stable for me and is well laid out and easy to use.

@dalcde I understand your desire for a GNOME-shell mint variant however it is easy enough to install it under the Cinnamon version or Linux Mint Maya. In the software manager search for GNOME-shell and install it. I just did so and I’ll test it after posting this. If it doesn’t work then I will comment again.

  9. Could you please, in your forthcoming posts, make clear how MATE is pronounced and where the word comes from??

I’m from Argentina, and it upsets me to hear every reviewer on YouTube saying mate (as in pal) instead of [ˈmate].

Perberos is from Argentina, and named the desktop environment after a traditional beverage/brew we all know very well around south america. The same goes for Caja (which stands for ‘box’), Pluma (stands for an old kind of ‘pen’), Atril (stands for ‘lectern’, ‘reading desk’, ‘bookrest’)

Please check out “Mate (beverage)” on wikipedia
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mate_%28beverage%29

If you would like me to, I could even record the correct pronunciation and send it to you.

    Thank you very much.

  10. @ Flaque :
I think most anglo saxons are trying hard avoid Mate being prononced like if it was the mating season …. hence the twist to give it a 2 syllabs ….plus it sounds are exotic that way…

  11. @Flaque:

I am also distressed about MATE/Mate. In high school, (1950) I chose to learn Spanish, because I felt that, even then, it would be ultimately be more useful and important than French, especially in the Western Hemisphere. (Sorry, Clem!)

Later on, I learned some more, and lived in a nice, affordable West Side Manhattan apartment with a mostly Hispanic/Latina staff, and trying to speak Spanish with them helped significantly. I think my accent is rather good, and my knowledge of the language, which I really like, is slightly better than survival level. 🙂

It should be pronounced MAH-tay, just about sure, where caps indicate stress. The Wikipedia pronunciation is given in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) simply as “mate”. However, that is really confusing, because the English word “mate” (as in friend or partner) looks the exactly the same in print.

Mate, the drink, is probably as commonplace in Argentina (also in Paraguay, and some neighboring Southern Cone countries?) as coffee in the USA, and (I presume) tea in the U.K.

Choosing a name for something to be distributed world-wide can be tricky; one needs to do lots of research. It’s not strange that Mate’s developer[s] chose the name of a favorite drink. I’d say that it’s much too late to change the name; it’s becoming established.

To anyone who is literate, spelling a word or name in all capitals means something special. It can be an acronym (radar was all caps, originally, as were sonar and laser). It can also be the initial letters of a multi-word name (Such as “SA” (in English) for South America); there are several other special purposes. Online, it’s often either shouting, or a sign that the writer is uneducated (maybe learned only the capital letters?) or is immature emotionally.

It was sad to see “Mate” become “MATE”, for no apparent good reason.
It seems that even the Mate Web site decided to go all capitals, although some messages there still spell it “Mate”. It might be too late to try to reverse the all-caps-for-no-reason “MATE”. (Harry S Truman, a past US president, adopted the “S” only for how it looks; he had no middle same.) I’m guessing that “MATE” will persist, and that the all caps form doesn’t stand for anything.

Many people have learned how to say, for instance, “Chevrolet”, “Mozart”, and “Beethoven” (a characteristically-Dutch spelling, by the way). At least, let’s add this to the words we say correctly, whatever else we do!

I apologize for a long post; it’s all too easy for me to do. I do, however, feel strongly about this matter, yet must not say much more.

Con mis recuerdos, (with my regards)
    [nb]

  12. The problem is, Flaque, that you just cannot get the Brits to “make funny noises”. Their pronunciation of Chevrolet, Mozart and Beethoven (not to mention Merkel) hardly approach the genuine articles!

    It’s so sad.

  13. @Nicholas Bodley

Mate is, indeed as you said, a very common drink around here, but it has slight differences regarding each country. For example, here in Argentina we mostly use mate an excuse to hang out, get together and have a good time; we share mate with friends, family, etc. In Uruguay, almost everyone has it’s own personal mate and they don’t share it (or they share it with their couple or close family); they don’t get together to ‘have some mate’, it’s more like a personal coffee. In Brasil, it’s not as common as in Argentina or Uruguay, but some people do drink mate; theirs is a much bigger one, and they kinda share it with everybody like in a reunion. Chileans mostly don’t drink mate, but you do find Yerba Mate (the ‘grass’ you use to ‘make’ mate) in supermarkets, luckily :D. I don’t know about Paraguay and the other ones.

Thanks for the backing up, by the way. It makes me feel better about it 🙂

    @ Trevor Adcock

It’s not just about brits. Check out the zillions reviews in youtube (which many are from US) and they also pronounce it wrong.

I bring this topic over here because, if it weren’t for Mint, MATE would have never gotten so popular (I also use Arch, which is where MATE started, and it was around for a long time before Mint started using it).
Thus, I feel Mint has a big responsibility over telling people how to pronounce the word.

Thank you for reading this, and excuse me for my english as it’s not my native language 🙂

  14. Flaque said, “excuse me for my english”.

Good grief! It’s a lot better than many messages I read from native speakers! I didn’t pay much attention to details, because it was so easy and pleasant to read. Until you offered your apology, I didn’t really think much about whether it’s your first language.

Yerba Mate is available (or was) locally (Eastern Massachusetts, northeastern USA) but it’s considered special, and is not easy to find. The kind I have seen (and bought) is packaged in tea bags.

I’m more than glad to help, if I can, when somebody from another country posts such messages as you did.

  15. I’m a big fan of KDE, and am really looking forward to seeing what the Mint team can do. Thanks for not only listening to your users, but also doing something about it.

  16. I am a big fan of Linux Mint, but also a big fan of LXDE. It is really a pity LXDE editions are being discontinued.

I think LXDE is a must for machines with low-specs e.g. old hardware or Atom-based stuff. Sad news 🙁

  17. yes
realy sad, LXDE is no more
for me here it’s the end cause my old laptop do not works well with any other, but LXDE
no more LXDE, no more mint for me.

  18. I am a linux fan and I am using ubuntu. Linux mint’s popularity is growing very fast. Thanks to all the developer’s in the world for making linux easy to use.

  19. I just assumed MATE was pronounced the same as “mate” in this sentence: I saw a dog mate with another dog. I guess I’m missing something, I’m an American and that’s the only “mate” I’m familiar with.

  20. @Linux Mint Fan,

I’m with you. I saw that discussion, and I’m like, what in the world have I done?! The silver lining is that unless I type it phonetically, then who knows what’s buzzing around my tiny ignorant mind…..LOL. Only in person, or in some sort of audible discussion would anybody ever be able to accuse me of butchering that word. It would be just my luck to go to an International Linux Mint convention of all LM users, and I would be the first one invited to comment on LM13-MATE………Then the fight started…….LOL

  21. I post it here, because the Maya post has “reply” disabled already…

There are many posts on the net on the kernel oops problem with Maya. Some say its some wireless card, others that an nvidia card. I have the exact problem too, even that I do not have any wireless card.

e.g. here is a screenshot with a kernel crash very similar to mine http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=103415&p=588739

I have via kt400 with nvidia 6200, Athlon xp, it never did any crashes but the latest Maya installation.

    Any hint?

  22. Although, while Mint 11 was perfectly stable on my hardware, Mint 13 had already three issues: 1. needed to remove ubiquity-slideshow-mint to make the installer run. 2. needed to temporarily replace nvidia 6200 to make the installer run, after installation the card is back and works fine. 3. after update/dist-upgrade apt-get stopped to work: “dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
files list file for package `gimp-help-en’ contains empty filename”, removing the corrupted parts of /var/lib/dpkg/info/gimp-help-en.list helped.

  23. It’s funny to realise that the name of the DE can be so many different things: a tea-like drink in South America /’mah-teh/; a friend, a guy for the Brits /meit/ or the act of procreation for Americans…
If I install the LXDE environment on top of the ‘ma-teh or the cinnamon version, how lousy will it be when compared to LM 12 LXDE?
