Events:

Summary:

  • LMDE was successfully released and the focus switched back to the other editions and the upcoming Linux Mint 11.
  • The KDE edition was tested but postponed in order to include the newly released KDE 4.6.
  • The LXDE edition is being tested.
  • Discussions are ongoing within the development team to decide whether the Fluxbox edition is to switch base from Ubuntu to LMDE.
  • Due to personal circumstances affecting its maintainer, the Xfce edition has been delayed.
  • Development started on Linux Mint 11. The two major features being discussed at the moment are the ability to backup and restore system snapshots, and a new network protocol which would allow Mint computers to be aware of each box connected to the local network in real time, and give users the ability to see who’s connected, to chat with them and exchange files.
  • Major upstream changes also mean the team will need to dedicate some time to fix things that are about to be broken… namely, changes with pygtk, gconf, aptd and Gnome 3.
  • We’re also keeping an eye on the Software Center, which thanks to a meeting we weren’t invited to, is about to become a Linux standard and gain the functionalities currently available in our Software Manager. It’s too soon to say whether we’ll continue to improve Software Manager or switch to Software Center. Upstream projects and other distributions aren’t interested in re-using our application and it makes little sense for us to compete with Ubuntu, especially if they’re happy to implement our ideas. If the upcoming Software Center is on par feature-wise with the Software Manager, we might switch to it in Linux Mint 11. We’re a bit bitter with the way this was done and the way we’re being ignored, but this is a good thing for the desktop and Linux users. In the end, whether it’s our solution or theirs, we’re happy to use what’s best.
  • Financially we’re doing very good. Our income is down 1.1% after what was our best month since the start of the project. Our sponsorships reached over $1,000/month. Our user base grew in the last few months and we now have the servers to cope with the increased traffic.

  1. Wonderful news! 🙂 I had such a busy month I was mostly away with other stuff so I actually forgot to donate but I’ll get on it right now. 🙂 Excellent news! 😀

  2. Lots of good news! Here’s hoping the Xfce-guy comes out on top.
What about these upstream changes? … H-hey, I’m a music student, I don’t do code!

Funny about the Software center/Software manager-thing… Though I’m sure Mint just slipped their mind. I spotted some articles about the meeting through Akregator (not only do I dual-boot, I also dual-DE!), and it seemed to me independent distributions were the main considerations. Did you spread the gospel on Software Manager?

Excited about KDE 4.6 coming to Julia! I suppose that means I’ll be on the business end of some 400-600 Mbs worth of updates in a fairly near future, but the end results will be worth the download, I’m sure.

  3. The way i see it is that with the software center is that they had a look down the list and though now who already has a rocking software manager so they wont need to come.

    Linux mint was the one.

    🙂 just my 2 cents

speaking of 2 cents i will hopefully be able to donate this month

  4. Maybe I’ll be on the list of sponsors next month, as my humble $3 didn’t seem to make the list this month.

  5. Stephen: I’m really sorry about this. It happened twice this month, we didn’t get any notification for it from Paypal. I processed your sponsorship just now. Apologies for the confusion and many thanks for supporting us.

This is why I love you guys. No ideology. Just the best software for your users.

  7. Hi Clem,
I know you’ve been doing some work on the Community server but I’m still personally experiencing long delays on many of my exchanges with it.

I did also drop a comment into the PC Advisor’s story about the “App Store” (http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=3258497&&spotlight=19:c). Silly boys, why reinvent the wheel when you guys have done such a grand job on the Software Manager?

It will be interesting to see the rankings position of Linux Mint once Mint 11 releases.

  8. The thing with the software center is we built on Ubuntu’s for Mint 10. Our version is more feature rich but this is how Canonical probably justifies using Mint’s added features. It is a shame there is not more collaboration between distros.

  9. that’s pretty sad how they’d do that with Software Manager, too proud to talk about collaboration?
Oh well, can’t cry over spilled milk

looking forward to the great work already being done and more to come. Definitely looking forward to the decision of Fluxbox’s base.

  10. > a new network protocol which would allow Mint computers to be aware of each box connected to the local network in real time …..

That would be a feature I’d really appreciate, since that’s what I am accustomed to since back from the days of DR-/Novell-DOS 7, Windows 3.11 and OS/2 Warp 4.0.
So far, to be honest, I still haven’t figured out the corresponding
    peer-networking part in Linux 🙁
Luckily there are USB memory sticks to ease the pain.

  11. Clem,

No worries. I’m happy to sponsor such a great product. Hopefully in the near future I’ll be able to increase my sponsorship.

  12. WTF?!?! I just don’t F@@king believe it!!! They didn’t invite you to the Software Center meeting , but you were the first to have and implement this great idea!!! What’s wrong with them? Ungrateful people.
Anyway, it might be the good time to cut the umbilical cord and switch to LMDE as the main edition. I’m using it on 2 desktops and 1 laptop at home and it works flawlessly!
And by the way, when people tell me they want to give ubuntu a try, I just reply “Try Linux Mint instead, it’s just better!”

    Keep up the great work!

  13. @Clem

    Well done Clem.
Send them a bit of elegance which is a thing they still have to acquire.

    Roberto

  14. I’m greatly looking forward to Linux Mint 11 and I’m happy you guys will be implementing the “Ubuntu Software Center” if it becomes on par with the features of Linux Mint’s “Software Manager.”

It’s reasonable decisions like this that will keep me a Linux Mint user over Ubuntu for the foreseeable future.

    Thank you and take care!

  15. wow what assholes. they didn’t invite you guyz to the meeting about software center which was your idea to begin with? I agree with Lewdsquirrel you guyz should just switch to LMDE as the main edition and forget about ubuntu. you guyz are the best!

  16. Hi Team,

We all are heartily thankful to you guys for doing such wonderful work.
Can I request you guys to have Direct Debit method to accept contribution in INR (Indian Rupee).
