Summary:
- The Linux Mint user base grew significantly in the last few months. It’s 32% bigger than it was in November 2009. It’s still far behind Ubuntu’s but far ahead of any other Linux distribution.
- The overall income went up 22% in March.
- Donations and sponsorships were high. We received donations from 127 people in March for a total of $4026! The sponsorships also raised a lot of money: $863.5, from a total of 72 sponsors!
- March was tough but rewarding. We lost one of our closest friends and the team was greatly affected by it. Then followed a period of hyper-activity as if everyone found comfort in working harder and excelling the best they could in his memory. I know that helped me personally and I know he’d be proud of what we did this month, I’m sure of it. The community gave us a new moderation team, the dev. team managed to produce 4 releases, most of the features planned for Mint 9 were implemented and 4 modules were added to the new community site.
- We’re now fully ready for the new release cycle, and in April our attention is going to be caught by the new Ubuntu 10.04 release. We’re ahead of schedule and we’ll probably try to fit in a few more features for Mint 9. In the near future we’re going to look at how we work and restructure our editions. Community editions are going to become official, 2 of them are planning to come as both 32 and 64 bit and we’ll try to release them earlier in the cycle and hopefully for both architectures at the same time. It’s too soon to talk about this, but April is going to an un-eventful month in appearance… as we prepare everything and work hard on things behind the curtain. We’re planning to release Linux Mint 9 by the end of May with an RC release in the middle of the month. In April, we might have a few interactive sessions for the community to give us some feedback on some of the new tools such as the new mintinstall, before we integrate them in Linux Mint 9.
I’m waiting for Mint 9, I remember you wanted to improve Mintbackup sometimes, but I cant find a note about it here.
Are there any plans on improving the backup tool?
Anyway, cant wait ^_^
Greets,
Roin
Mint is definitely coming into its own now 🙂
Can’t wait to see the new mintInstall tbh, and the
rumours of new artwork… I want to see 😀 😀
I think Distrowatch Popularity can be seen here (last column):
http://distrowatch.com/stats.php?section=popularity
it’s the 4th with 1447 hits
In the 7 days section its 3rd (so obviously things are good this week lol)

Many thanks to all the donors and sponsors
Wow! This distro is really getting some recognition. I count it all due to the Dev team and Clem for creating such a fabulous distro! Onward and Upward! Congrats to the Mint community for making Mint what it is!!!
That’s some really great news, really. The new software manager will be a real success, I’m sure of that! Mint is becoming an OS of dreams!
Now, a few suggestions – if possible, it would be great to have a better backup tool. Or include another one instead? Someone in the forums mentioned Luckybackup.
Another thing – the choice of preinstalled apps. I think it would be great to have Vlc included. And, possibly, Deluge. Everywhere I come and see Mint or Ubuntu, they have those apps installed. Wine could be great, too…
The new Mint menu seems brilliant. Will it be reasizable? That would be really handy…
Well, thanks for the brilliant distro!
Just waiting for the RCs and to try them out. It will be grteat to get the 64 bit distro at the same time as the 32 bit.
Thinking of backup tools, in my bad old days of Windows I used Second Copy 97 which did everything I needed. I have yet to find a similar tool in Linux. Well I’m now learning C so it could end up as a bit of DIY.
^ What Brennus says… ^
Thanks Clem and all!!!
brennus, the present mintBackup is getting a complete
overhaul right now, so perhaps thats one of your wishes
tended to 🙂
Thanks to clem,
Thanks to all the people who help Mint in any way.
Thanks especially to donors,
Thanks to all the users..
Thanks especially to those who encourage others to use MINT.
cheers

Thanks Clem, thank you all.

Looks like Mint just hit the #2 spot on the Distrowatch 7-day ranking (1841 hits). In case you don’t know, the Page hit ranking widget for distros is on the main page in the right hand sidebar. Just scroll down the page a bit and you’ll find it. Has a drop down menu for selecting the time period. Go Mint go!

Yeah….and it is exactly how Husse would like us to see. Working together making Mint the best OS ever and having the best and most friendly communion!
