  1. Keep up the good work!!

I grew up with Windows 3.11, studied Comp Sci and university with Windows, used it for another 15 years while Linux kept improving.

5 months ago, I gave Linux a try and never looked back! I hardly ever boot to Windows any more. Work, home, play, Mint is the perfect example of how Linux has come of age and should now be mainstream for all.

My kids (age 6 & 8) even have Mint on their notebooks now!

Thanks to all those hard-working people who have help to make Linux what it is today. :)))))

  2. Wow! Congratulations! If things go like this you will be able to work full time on Mint in less than a year. Me and many others enjoy Mint every day so I can only thank all the people who can support this project. 🙂 Congratulations to the whole team!

  3. I’ve tried a bunch of Linux distros off and on over the last 3 years and always though, hmm, getting there but not quite ready for prime time — particularly due to install & driver issues — and general desktop ugliness. I tried again about six months ago and burned another dozen *Nix distros (incl FreeBSD, Centos, Fedora, OpenSolaris and many Ubuntu flavors) and ditto, so shelved Linux yet again. Didn’t know about LinuxMint though.

Then three months ago I bought a new 1920×1080 wide-screen monitor for my Toshiba Windows XP laptop. Unfortunately I could only get the monitor to work in 1600×1200 mode and you all know how fuzzy incorrect monitor resolution looks on your PC.

So then I went to Toshiba for Nvidia driver upgrade.

The Toshiba website said to go to Nvidia to get new driver.

I went to Nvidia website and it said to contact Toshiba. So, all in all, I was at a dead end.

Apparently if you want to use a wide-screen monitor with an 3 year old Toshiba laptop, you have to downgrade** Windows XP to Windows Vista.

(**Yes, I said downgrade to Vista from XP.)

So then I was about to take the monitor back to my local PC store when I read about LinuxMint in a Linux magazine.

I said to myself, okay sounds nice, “I’ll give it a shot”.

So I went home, pulled out a 6 year old AMD 64 bit desktop box, downloaded LinuxMint 32 bit onto the laptop. (I’m still suspicious of 64 bit distros).

I plugged the new wide-screen monitor into the AMD desktop and also the Three mobile broadband modem into a USB slot.

Booted off CD. LinuxMint installed flawlessly in less than 10 minutes or so.

LinuxMint comes up alive and says (figuratively)

Do you want to set your monitor to 1920 by 1080 mode?

I says “oh, yes, thanks you very much”

    LinuxMint says

Do you want to connect to Three mobile broadband?

I says “goodie, goodie, yes please”

Three months later I rarely use my Windows XP Toshiba laptop.

LinuxMint has not only worked flawlessly, it is just a total pleasure to work with.

Even my wife who hates computers says she loves my new mint flavored desktop!

In my humble opinion, Windows is rapidly becoming irrelevant.

Maybe it was just pot luck and LinuxMint and all the other Ubuntu distos just happened to come of age simultaneously. Either way, lucky for me and LinuxMint I haven’t tried another distro since.

Summary. With LinuxMint plus OpenOffice plus Firefox or Opera browser, there is absolutely no need to use Windows anymore.

My local PC store is also very happy that I didn’t have to return the 1920 x 1080 monitor!

I wish LinuxMint every success. Thank you so much for producing this very, very cool Linux distro. Now, I think I should do the right thing and make a donation. Let’s find that PayPal button 🙂

  4. Just installed mint on hp mini 1000. Clean UI of mint is well suited for small net-books. It was my friend’s netbook, previously XP and full of spywares and viruses. Now, since its a linux based and looks better than XP i guess, he can roam around the “**” websites without worrying about the spywares.

If some one has Mini 1000, and feels they have been treated badly with so called “Multimedia + Internet Experience” version of ubuntu, i suggest a mint installation using USB.

  5. That’s great. Mint is great. Ubuntu is great. I installed opensuse for a tryout, but all went rong, no wireless, limited dvd recording, no opengl. I tought, thank god for ubuntu and mint, EVERYTHING is detected, EVERYTHING is working Out Of The Box! THANK YOU!

  6. Great!

As a Linux Mint User i just should say:

Thank You Sponsors and Donors listed above for supporting
    The Linux Mint Project.

  7. Rock on!! Still feeling my way around Mint, but the best distro I’ve tried to date. Can not wait to get completely off Microsoft.
Thank you! Keep up the great work.

  8. begun from tuesday 06/09/09, I and my team trying to implementing GNU/Linux Mint 7 (Gloria) on laptop, then atendees at least 42 person come from all around provinces in Indonesia, perform to parted their laptop and create dual boot.

  9. Hello there,

I’m very new to mint 7, in matter of fact I’m new to Linux as a whole.
From what I read from magazines and from other people Linux is a very good o/s, but its harder to work with unless I know what I am doing. So I never even bothered trying it out until a few days ago my cousin told me about mint 7. He explained to me how easy it is to use like windows but MUCH safer. so I decided to give it a try and so far I love it completely where I use it all the time and I hardly get on windows anymore. In fact the only time I get on windows is to only to play EVE online and to watch my favorite tv shows online, and for business records but other than that, I love it.
Thanks to all of you guys whole have work on making this possible and to all those whole helped by donation.

  10. I switched to Linux in July. I would never change back to Windows. Tried Ubuntu first, but as a newbie, I find Mint easier (thanks to all the preinstalled stuff).

  11. Hi –

My daughter wanted a Mac. I gave her my old Gateway laptop with Linux Mint on it. No virus, no crash, auto updates. She is happy.

    Thanks for the great work.

  12. Wow!! Congratulations to the dedicated & Gifted Men & Women who have given their time & talents to produce a equal,if not a better operating system than Microsoft can produce. And it is free to the community.
Keep up the good work it is appreciated.
    Regards
    Geoff

  13. Have been a Ubuntu user for over a year now and thought I would give Mint a try. Like it better than Ubuntu, kind of a mix between Ubuntu and OS X.

  14. Hi all,

I just wanted to let you guys know that you are doing a great job. I’ve tried various distros over the years but basically stayed with Windows due to the reasonably high level of knowledge required to get Linux to function as well as I needed it to. I installed Mint about two weeks ago and I was immediately impressed. I have managed to get Mint to do everything that I used Windows for, which for me has been a long time in coming! Whatever you guys behind Mint are doing, keep doing it !!!

As for my collection of MS software, well it will shortly be bound for that cylindrical filing cabinet on the floor (bin / trash-can).

    Keep up the great work!!

  15. Relst: When I wake up in the morning, I don’t go to work anymore, I turn on the screen and start working on Linux Mint. This freedom I have not to go to work and to work on this project instead is made possible thanks to the income it generates. We went from a project which started out as a hobby, with me working more or less 2 hours a day on it, to a project which is now my main occupation and which I consider my job and on which I work all day long (and at the week-end as well, because to tell you the truth, I’m just completely and passionately obsessed with it) 🙂

So that’s where the money goes. There’s also a few expenses of course (hosting, equipment…etc) but that’s a minor part of it. As we grow more I’m hoping to send money towards other members of the team and to slowly but surely generate a growing income for them as well.

  16. Hi Clem. Compliments for your decision: it is worth a donation for encouragement!
So, after some months using Mint as my sole O. S. at home, I considered correct to send you my donation.

Enjoy your being your own boss, and keep working as well as you’ve done in these years with Mint!

  17. You make a killer linux solution for humans, but this comment is not about that.

Take a real long look at how much your work is appreciated. Few people ever get that kind of appreciation and gratefullness for their work.

And *YOU* have made linux practical.

“More than a century ago, when cycling was first becoming popular, a Victorian humorist named Jerome K. Jerome pointed out that you could either ride a bike or “maintain” a bike — but not both. The bikes of “maintainers” are always in several pieces because they are tightening the spokes, adjusting the chain, replacing the brakes, or something. They never actually get to ride their bikes. If you enjoy riding, he advised, never, ever try to maintain your bike.”

Your’s is the very first linux distro that’s practical for the people who just wants to take their bikes for a ride. 🙂

  18. Wonderful bit of kit the first disk I got of your distro with a computer magazine. I only use window for a few photo things like scanners and my large format printer, I work with photography and of course I have to have some things to survive in a market-place that is small in large photographic gear, even amongst all the pro’s in the World, so yes the few that I do need from Msoftbased were at first very expensive – I find your distro about the best in all fields that I use, as have two other scanners and a rag-end printer for rough proofs and you are above Msoft in easy access onall other area’.

I find that when I am relaxing a need a look at my mail-boxes, that mint is the first one I go to, and often the last one to go to before end of day – easy on the eyes, and just tops in for the quick look without all the excess baggage that comes with MSoft in the way of adverts and their bloat rubbish that is not needed by me, and most others.
I will start either doing the sponsor or donation, just give me enough time to get an even keel on more of your multimedia environs.

Thanks you will be rewarded a litle every so often, as gave a copy of the programme to another that had bought it with your Mint on it, he then reloaded with Msoft XP, and then seeing my computer working with Mint and doing all the things he wanted to do – but was told XP was better at first, he then wanted Mint back as was far less intrusive with adverts, useless message boards and bloat rubbish. Will try to promote you outside whenever I get the chance to speak to everyday users , as I do already – best wishes in your project & endeavours.

  19. I thought I would try this….and sent a letter to ASUS…here is the email I sent…….I bought a F5 Entertainment notebook, it came with Windows vista, I didnt ask for this operating system on my new pc but it was already installed. I realise that you need to ponder to the masses and try to look after the majority. But I object to paying for a licence that I am never going to use. The first thing I did with my new notebook was to format it and install Linux Mint.I must say that I am very pleased with this decision and certainly do not intend to use any Windows products in the immediate future. So I ask for either a refund or for you to Donate the price that you pay for a Microsoft Licence to the Linux Mint project. I look forward to your reply in anticipation….looking forward to their reply.

  20. Great to see you take the plunge Clem. I know what its like to do that. I’m 40 with a trade I hated. One day, woke up and said “bugger this, I’m going to university and I’m gonna do IT.” Two years on, the kids are happy, the wife is happy and I am happy (and two years closer to my degree). Great Distro. Great fan base.
To every one else, $5 bucks a month is what I throw in. Give a bit back ppl.

  21. All perfectly if you guy repackage all Ubuntu Deb becoming Mint. Thanks a lot for producing a beauti and user-friendly Desktop like Mint. Cant be waiting till Mint Helena coming up/

  22. Been experimenting with Linux OS off and on since 1998. Started with RedHat, TurboLinux, PClinuxOS, and countless others. In the past couple of years Fedora, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu became popular, tried all of them for a few months, then also tried Linux Mint Daryna. For two years now I’ve been stuck with Linux Mint. Upgraded Daryna to Gloria. I love Linux Mint 7. It’s a fast and stable OS. And I like the fact that I can play the multimedia stuff, like youtube, adobe flash, without any problems. I would definitely recommend it to my future clients when I start my IT consulting biz.
