The team is proud to announce the release of Linux Mint 15 “Olivia”.

Linux Mint 15 Olivia

Linux Mint 15 is the most ambitious release since the start of the project. MATE 1.6 is greatly improved and Cinnamon 1.8 offers a ton of new features, including a screensaver and a unified control center. The login screen can now be themed in HTML5 and two new tools, “Software Sources” and “Driver Manager”, make their first appearance in Linux Mint.

Upgrade instructions:

  • To upgrade from a previous version of Linux Mint follow these instructions.
  • To upgrade from the RC release, simply apply any level 1 and 2 updates (if any) available in the Update Manager.

Development is a lot of fun and it doesn’t take much to get started. If you’re tempted to join the team, don’t hesitate to follow our development on http://github.com/linuxmint and come and chat with the developers at #linuxmint-dev (irc.spotchat.org).

Last months we talked about “mintSources” and the fact that it was going to replace “software-properties-gtk”. One of the features handled by software-properties-gtk and which isn’t handled by mintSources is the installation of proprietary drivers. In Linux Mint 15, this is handled by a tool called “mintDrivers”.

MintDrivers, the “Driver Manager”,  relies on the same Ubuntu backend as software-properties-gtk. The main difference is that “Driver Manager” isn’t just a tab in some other tool but its very own independent application.

That makes it easier to discover for novice users and we took the opportunity to improve its user interface a little bit as well:

  • Drivers are no longer listed by description but by package name.
  • Versions are clearly stated (in the case of the nVidia drivers you can therefore choose according to a particular version instead of wondering what “current” or “updates” really mean)
  • The recommended choice is clearly stated
  • Devices from popular brands (nVidia, ATI, Broadom, Samsung…etc) are now illustrated with an icon

Olivia is pronounced oh-LIV-ee-ah. It is of Latin origin and the meaning of Olivia is “olive tree”. The olive tree is a symbol of fruitfulness, beauty, and dignity.
