Development is a lot of fun and it doesn’t take much to get started. If you’re tempted to join the team, don’t hesitate to follow our development on http://github.com/linuxmint and come and chat with the developers at #linuxmint-dev (irc.spotchat.org).

This month we’re giving you a preview of one of the new tools we developed for Linux Mint 15. It’s a new Mint tool and this one is called “mintSources”.

Until now Linux Mint used the upstream “Software Properties” tool developed by Ubuntu. Although it was working fine it wasn’t adapted to Linux Mint and it was heavily patched to work with our distribution. This created “technical debt” for our project and it prevented us from implementing solutions that were needed by Linux Mint (for instance, the ability to select mirrors for both the Ubuntu base and Mint repositories).

So a new tool was developed from scratch and was designed with derivatives in mind (primarily Linux Mint, but also LMDE, and our friends at Netrunner and Snow Linux).

From the main screen you can easily enable or disable optional components and gain access to backports, unstable packages and source code:

You can also switch to a faster mirror with one click of the mouse. The tool performs a speed-test of all available mirrors for you:

MintSources also lets you manage access to PPAs, which you can add easily by simply entering the name of the PPA.

You can of course manage additional repositories…

And manage your authentication keys (that’s only there for troubleshooting, since system repositories and keys are handled automatically and PPA keys are downloaded for you when you add a new PPA)

MintSources also has a “Maintenance” section which we use to place solutions to common problems.

The tool is now fully ready it will be included in Linux Mint 15. Of course there’s still one missing piece in the puzzle if we want to completely remove software-properties and that’s drivers management. LMDE already ships with DDM, the Ubuntu Software Properties tool can be reduced and repackaged into a standalone Drivers Manager, Jockey can raise from the grave or we can look into writing our own solution from scratch. It’s too soon to say which solution will be the best yet, but whatever happens we’ll pick the best one and we’ll get it all sorted in time for Linux Mint 15.

News and summary:

  • LMDE 201303 was approved. The stable release will be out this Friday.
  • MATE 1.5 and Cinnamon 1.7 were tested in QA conditions within Linux Mint 15 ALPHA ISOs. Both environments work well and are very close to feature completion. The team is working on fixing the bugs and finding all the little things that can be improved prior to their respective 1.6 and 1.8 releases.
  • mintMenu is being ported to MATE 1.6 and gsettings. These changes are required since MATE is getting lighter and deprecated some of its components (matecomponent, matecorba, mateconf..etc). The new mintMenu will  look exactly the same as before and it might be slightly faster to load. The team also took the opportunity to give mintMenu its own keybinding handling, which means key combinations such as Control + Super_L are no longer necessary and the menu can simply be open by pressing the Super_L (Windows) key.

This month’s “developer of the month” is: esteban1uy, 13 years old!

Don’t be fooled by his age, he’s new in the development team but he did 3 really cool things this Summer. Have a look:

  • First, he helped people on the forums troubleshoot a bug in Cinnamon 1.4 which made the desktop crash when using LibreOffice. The developers were running out of ideas, people didn’t know what to do so esteban1uy led the investigation, spent a lot of time talking to people, learnt about debugging C code and finally found the cause of the problem. A week later he had a patch ready, muffin was upgraded and people’s desktops didn’t crash anymore… that was on the forums and it made people very happy 🙂
  • Then, he made Cinnamon2D happen. The development team had given up on using llvmpipe. He led the R&D on software-rendering, clutter configuration, and came up with the idea of removing shadows… It’s a bit technical to describe in simple terms, but although he didn’t implement Cinnamon2D, it wouldn’t be in Cinnamon 1.6 if it wasn’t for him (note that Cinnamon2D is there for troubleshooting, there’s still a lot of work to be done before it enables anyone to have a decent Cinnamon desktop using software-rendering).
  • Right now, he’s working with dalcde on “bumpmaps”. The gaming industry calls this “tessellation”. The idea is to give artists the ability to define transparent textures which look a bit like sculpted glass. For instance, a honeycomb bumpmap would make your menu look like that:

Bumpmaps will come in Cinnamon 1.8. If you see esteban1uy, don’t buy him a beer, that would be inappropriate, but don’t hesitate to give him a pat on the back.

News and summary:

  • In its October 2012 issue, Linux Format ranked Linux Mint as the “Best Distro 2012”.
  • Very few announcements were made during the summer but a lot of work was done in preparation for Linux Mint 14. MDM received important bug fixes, compatibility with all GDM themes and support for user lists and user “faces”. Nemo was announced as the new Cinnamon file browser and received a lot of usability improvements. Cinnamon itself is getting ready for a massive 1.6 release and a huge number of new features. MATE continues to impress with an even more polished 1.4 release. All of these technologies are significantly ahead of the versions used by Linux Mint 13 and the gap between now and the end of November, when Linux Mint 14 is out, means they can mature and receive bug fixes to ensure a stable and impressive release.
  • There are now less LMDE mirrors than before but they sync the entire 600GB LMDE archive, including “latest” and “incoming”. This, along with a new feature in LMDE which tests the speed of each mirror and interactively asks the user which one to use when the list of mirrors is changed, should guarantee a better upgrade and better speeds than previously observed with UP4. Update Pack 5 itself is almost ready and received positive feedback from “incoming” testers.
  • This release cycle was a breath of fresh air for the development team. The ability to rely on Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce and KDE and the limited scope for regressions coming from upstream allowed us to spend more time and focus in development. With UP5, Cinnamon, MATE, MDM and Nemo almost ready, we’re switching focus towards mintInstall and Jockey (which is being replaced upstream and which features we’d also like to see working in LMDE).

  • Linux Mint 12 was released. As expected, the introduction of MGSE, Gnome 3 and MATE received an outstanding success, while the disappearance of Gnome 2 was identified by some as an important regression.
  • Now more than ever, people need more choice. As many Gnome 2 users will face a switch, either when older releases reach end of life, or when LMDE switches as well, it’s extremely important we continue to improve the user experience on both MGSE and MATE, while providing additional desktop alternatives (KDE being our main priority).
  • MGSE significantly improved post-release and received updates and bug fixes on an almost daily basis.
  • MATE received critical bug fixes and is now much more stable than it was in the RC and even in the stable release. The momentum it gained by being part of this release helped it tremendously. MATE is more well-known, and it’s starting to attract developers. A website was created for MATE and the code is now managed by a team, which I joined as project manager. As MATE becomes more and more full featured and as it is gaining in stability, we’re considering releasing a dedicated MATE edition.
  • Work on the KDE and LXDE editions started. The Linux Mint staff was increased to 3 full-time members this December in an effort to bring alternative desktop choices to users in a timely manner.
  • The donations we received this month were simply amazing. This is an all-time high since the creation of the project and the support we’ve been getting from the community during this release has been fantastic. The figures speak for themselves, $9,175 in total, 335 people offering help via donations, 150 sponsors, and this is just the visible tip of the iceberg, the tangible financial support! We’re also receiving patches, suggestions, ideas, bug fixes, and help in so many other ways. The IRC and forums are booming with people helping each others. There’s a lot to be proud of when you’re part of such a community. Many thanks for your support and to everyone out there in the community who help make Linux Mint better.
