  1. Enjoying the beta release on two systems. A lot of interest in the new menu! I really like how configurable it is and it does provide a nice modern look. Cinnamon in general really looks nice across the board. System Information is very nice too!

Thank you for the nice work!

  2. Hi everyone in the community,

Happy holidays and a wonderful end of the year 😊️🎉️🌟️

May the new year bring peace and brotherly love to the world, and may Linux Mint continue to grow in its development and bring more people together around the world 💖️🕊️🌎️

    To infinity and beyond (^o^)//

  3. I’m very proud to support you on Patreon, Mint team! I believe 2026 will be a great year for the open-source community and for all of us. Happy New Year!

  4. Please refresh LMDE7 ISO once in a while, maybe follow debian point (13.X) release, my bandwidth not good enough for huge update after install. tq

  5. Thank you for all the hard work you’ve done!

If I may wish for future features, these are the two I would like to see:

    1. Global search like Spotlight on mac
    2. Framework for UI customizations that would make it possible to package everything to a single file. Ideally users could easily browse and install customizations made by others and they could include the theme, icon pack, fonts, panels placements, applets etc. and then install them with a single click.

    1. I’m not sure that I would want that level of automation in my themes. I’d rather be able to choose each element separately and craft the entire UI myself to fit my needs. I can see packaging a theme, icon pack, and *maybe* even fonts together (as long as it didn’t automatically apply the font), but I’m pretty picky about panel placement, and I’m absolutely picky about which applets I have installed or not. I wouldn’t want to apply a theme, and suddenly everything I want is gone, and things I don’t want are there and in weird places

    2. That said, one thing I do wish we could have is custom theme presets. Mint already has presets in the “Simplified” theme settings for Mint-X, Mint-L, and Mint-Y. I’d like to be able to create and name my own presets within that list, and maybe edit the already existing ones for the Mint-X/L/Y themes (because I *really* don’t like the new mouse pointer default, and I prefer a dark panel theme for Mint-X, specifically the old “Linux Mint” panel theme that they frustratingly removed for some reason in recent versions), so that I can select one thing, and everything is adjusted to match exactly the theme elements I want for that preset.

    3. @Mike F I agree 100% re preferring the old Linux Mint Panel theme. Luckily I grabbed the code before it was removed but it would be nice if it were reinstated as a default option. I also agree regarding the cursor, but at least the previous one is available for selection

    4. @Mike F

It could have options for which parts of the pack you want to apply. Perhaps you have built yourself an awesome configuration and you’d like to save all that, including the panels and applets as a preset you can revert back to if you try something else.

Whenever I see some cool ricing I always wish I could install the same kind of setup for myself with a click, instead of having to follow a youtube tutorial of downloading and configuring everything separately.

  6. Wishing a Very Happy and Healthy New Year to Clem and all the team, and a big thanks for all you do to make Mint such a great product.

  7. Nappy New Year, Linux Mint team! I have never had any problems with Linux Mint and I wish you all a happy and successful life without any problems, too. And may LM have a bright future! Greetings from Bulgaria!

  8. Thank you for your constant efforts, happy holidays, and here’s to a great 2026!
P.S. The only detail I find in the new menu is that there is no option to show only the favorites icons, so that it takes up less space on my laptop screen.

  9. Hi and happy new year.

I installed a clean beta this time, and had one issue.

I have the GeForce GT710 graphics card. It was only showing 1 out of 4 HDMI ports with the driver from Nvidia (470.256.02) ,The X.org 1:1.0.17-2ubuntu0.1 is ok but a little bit of hang sometimes.

I think this beta is almost ready to be release 22.3.

    Thanks to the team.
    A good job as usual.

    1. This is a driver/kernel issue, I believe (from what I’ve read), and seems to be a common problem in recent Ubuntu versions and older NVIDIA graphics cards using the 470 driver. Unfortunately, this probably isn’t something the Mint team can solve, as it stems from upstream packages. Some suggest using the 390 driver (which is available via PPA), or trying Nouveau (which, personally, I would consider a last resort, as Nouveau isn’t very good), or switching to a different (older?) kernel version.

  10. Is there trouble with the forums?
I’m in UK and can’t access them at all.
I can only ask here because I can’t ask anywhere else.

    1. I am also in the UK. All I get is the top and tail of the main page with a statement that says “This board has no forums”. Is the content being blocked for the UK similar to Imgur?

    2. Saw the same thing here from the US, but when I logged into the Forums they were all there again. Guess I had always been logged in and when the year changed from 2025 to 2026 the system logged me out.

    3. Also UK based, having the same issue. You don’t normally need to be logged in because I accessed the forums a few days ago without logging in. I found my registration details but it seems I haven’t used them in a while and the account has been deleted.

    4. After logging in I found a thread in the “Forums Feedback” forum where SMG said: “We made a change to the forums because people were having problems seeing forum webpages and the change means you now have to log in to see forum pages. We’re hoping this change helps”.

    1. Forums down for me too, am in the uk

      General Error
      SQL ERROR [ mysqli ]

Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction [1205]

An SQL error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact the Board Administrator if this problem persists.

  11. Happy birthday Clem and the Mint team!
I’m waiting for the new version patiently, I know it will be a successful version, I trust you.

  12. After eyeing Linux from afar for the past 20 years I finally made the switch from Mac in this past year. After trialing so many distros, Linux Mint has been my daily driver since that change, thanks to its overall high quality and ease of use for a newcomer like me. The learning curve was so small that the change was very easy. Thanks LM team.

  13. FORUMS DOWN Now I see this:
    Hosting Server Read Timeout
HTTP 504 — Unable to Read from the Origin Server

Can anyone from the Mint team please comment.
    Does Clem read these comments?

Also – it would be madness to have to be registered to even read the forums.
Please reassure me that was a conspiracy rumour.

    1. The option to only allow logged-in users is the least you can do for now. What is your proposal to tackle this problem? (Shouting from the sidelines is not going to help, so stop it.)

    2. @opsimath – I am not happy to be accused of spreading a “conspiracy rumour” when all I did was post a true statement made by one of the forums’ moderators.

  14. Just now I got a different message:

    “General Error
    SQL ERROR [ mysqli ]
Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction [1205]
An SQL error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact the Board Administrator if this problem persists.
Please notify the board administrator or webmaster: admin@linuxmint.com
Gruppo – i do not shout. I’m just missing the forums and trying to find out what is going wrong.
The forums are one o f the best features of Linux Mint – and can be used for general education. Many times when browsing the forums I have come across things by accident which have become very useful.
I advise new users to look at the forums and to Pjotr’s Easy Linux Tips.
They wouldn’t at that stage create an account. May peace and peace and peace be everywhere.

    1. There has been much trouble accessing the Forums for past few days. Not sure if it is denial-of-service attacks or AI scrapers overloading the site or something else. I feel sure people are working on a solution but in the interim we just have to put up with it.

  15. Recently, I’ve seen two threads on Reddit about Linux Mint KDE. IMHO, Plasma today has feature parity with Cinnamon (but not vice versa). What will the Mint developers do when GTK 5 inevitably closes the door to extensions and customization? Fork GTK (3/4) entirely? Qt seems like the way to escape this.

    1. And Mint’s current position in popularity among other Linux distros would make everyone happy with a Cinnamon-Qt or Plasma edition: folks at KDE and Debian (given the lack of popular APT-based distros running KDE), folks at Kubuntu, people here who always talk about the lack of true transparency support in Mint, users wanting earlier Wayland support (KWin is the superior compositor), and even GNOME users – because fewer people would be annoying them about their design decisions. And I can see Qt XApps gaining traction, so even the Mint developers would have something to gain from it.

    2. Let’s just say many users and communities in the linuxsphere would appreciate something like this.

    3. @mintuser Agree. GTK is becoming more and more of a walled garden harder to deal with. I’m constantly having regressions with my desktop theme not being respected by an accumulating number of applications, interfering with my everyday experience. And it’s one more burden for the Mint Team to deal with.

    4. @Bruno Miranda A Linux Mint Cinnamon-Qt or Plasma edition would satisfy several groups:
      KDE and Debian users, by offering one more apt/Debian-based distro option;
      Kubuntu developers, by providing another platform for Plasma bug squashing and a new lightweight DE flavor;
      People here hoping for full transparency support;
      Those looking for early adoption of Wayland (KWin is the superior compositor);
      Even GNOME developers, who would benefit from fewer people questioning their design decisions;
And, first and foremost, Windows exiles, who would appreciate a Windows-10-like experience rather than a Windows-7-style one.

The distro needs new users to survive, and the customization options within Qt would allow for a strong and distinct distro identity.

  16. I can get to the forums login, but I get an access denied page when I do log in.
Seems like the forums started having trouble right after the new year. Maybe some certificate expired?
Forgot to pay their web hosting bill maybe? 🙂

  17. will mint software selection stay the same for next lts release or would it change too? like gnome terminal > ptyxis, cellulloid > showtime/clapper?, system monitor > resources. also can you take a look at https://github.com/irql-notlessorequal/intel-vaapi-driver , i see that the og driver no longer received update, maybe consider this as replacement? i want a working hw accel, the og driver didnt work properly on wayland and maybe the fork will fixed it in the future considering everyone dropping xorg sooner or later. on wayland, hw accel didnt work on celluloid, it even struggle to play 1080p 30fps, vlc on the other hand play 1080 30fps using vaapi on drm option (vaapi without drm output green screen) but struggling on 60fps, frame keep dropping. vlc using xorg play 60fps just fine without fps drop. im currently using lmde7 but considering to clean install on lm23 release. also do you mind checking if there bug with file roller creating 7z archive? it freeze the desktop for me, meanwhile creating 7z archive using cli even with max setting didnt freeze the desktop at all.

  18. Ahhh…
The github repository for the beta test issues has just been retired (read only). So the release is coming. But my bug report for the lack of compose key setting was not closed. I just hope that something was done for the release. This is a real show stopper for me. In Canada (and Québec) most laptops are sold with US key boards. A compose key is essential for writing, with accents, in French.

    1. Hi
Yes. My second (older) laptop on LMDE7 just got the latest Cinnamon. My set up was carried over from the previous version but the option panel was there and it would have taken a few seconds to set the compose key to my liking. Yayyy….
No need to hold my breath anymore
      Regards

      François Proulx, Longueuil, Québec, Canada

  19. The release notes page has a section labelled “Solving freezes during the boot sequence”, a video there could do with updating, it portrays changing a “nomodeset” option in Mint 17.3….
While the advice may still be valid, the video passed its ‘sell by date’ a decade ago…

  20. I have cancelled all my Patreon memberships for geopolitical reasons. I want to continue supporting Mint and will revert to manual monthly donations if necessary. If there’s a way to make an automatic contribution paid in euros can someone post the info here . Thanks.

  21. Is LMDE a higher priority than Linux Mint now that Cinnamon 6.6 is available in LMDE 7 before the release of Linux Mint 22.3?

Should computer systems with Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) be upgraded to LMDE (based on Debian)?

    Thank you

  22. LMDE 7 is installed here. Yesterday, the update to Cinnamon 6.6.4 arrived. In my opinion, the new menu has been improved. The system information is well summarised, although it could be expanded a little further.
I haven’t noticed any errors so far. The colours in libadwaita applications are not adjusted initially, which required a reboot.

I switched to LMDE to avoid dependence on Ubuntu. Now there is still a (future) risk regarding dependence on Gnome. In my point of view Cinnamon could possibly result from an adaptation of the new Cosmic desktop in later years, as it appears to be highly adaptable.

  23. The latest update is showing EN (keyboard?) on the panel’s systray and won’t let me remove it. Anyone else getting this?

    1. Did you check the keybord settings in the Parameters?
You possibly have more than one keyboard configured, so it shows the one active.

  24. In LDME7 with cinnamon 6.6, I don’t know if this depend from new icons set (symbolic?), but in “Search remote keys…” dialog on Seahorse an on/off icon is missing in the “Where to search” listbox.

    1. The original menu is available as an applet, classic menu, you can switch it back to the original menu if you wish

  25. Two suggestions for the final version of 22.3
For attention of Clem or SMG or xenopeek

    1. Update Manager>Edit>Preferences>Automation>Remove obsolete kernels and dependences
I suggest greying out this setting until it works.

    2. Make possible the disabling the Caps Lock keyboard key.

  26. Since my last update yesterday on my LMDE 7 , My AZERTY keyboard layout is recognised when running with Wayland. Everything I have tested works normally.
I just vhave to get used to the new menu layout and to the new icons.
    Congratulation !

    1. Yes. And it works as advertised, up to now. The upgrade path is also opened and working. Opposite to the upgrade to Cinnamon in LMDE7 that retained the keyboard set up (compose key), with the upgrade from LM22.2 to 22.3, I had to reset the compose key location. That took all of 5 seconds. I guess that an upgrade of the OS is bigger than a simple DE upgrade. All in all everything is working OK for now.
      Regards

      François Proulx, Longueuil, Québec, Canada

    2. Hi. Just discovered that the upgrade to LM 22.3 did reset some stuff to nominal, like removing the fastly repo. I had to re-set this. The Ubuntu repos were also reset to nominal. The power management set-up was still as I set it. But, then again, I don’t tend to modify a lot of things.
So, if one upgrades, check out settings, you know… just in case.
      Regards

    3. Went into LM22.2 Zara (Mate) applied a new version of the Update Manager available. Installed available updates. Then within Update Manager selecting Edit will present “Upgrade to ‘Linux Mint 22.3 Zena'”. Selected it, and reviewed the Release Notes, New features, and Requirements. In my case, the upgrades went flawlessly. Only thing for me is that Redshift still not working in LM Mate.

    4. to: Stan Reichardt
What is not working in Redshift?
Redshift relied on Mozilla’s Location Service (MLS) to automatically find your location for sunset/sunrise times, but Mozilla retired MLS in mid-2024, breaking Redshift’s auto-location feature and causing many Linux users (like on Linux Mint) to need manual configuration or to use alternatives.
While Redshift still works, users now often have to set coordinates manually or switch to other tools like Nightlight.

  27. Flawless upgrade. No problems afterwards.

A question, though – for those of us still stuck on hardware with old Nvidia cards, are there any plans, by you or anyone else, to fix the 470 driver incompatibility with the 6.14 kernel? I know Nvidia won’t do it; they’re too focused on AI 🙁

    1. This repo: https://github.com/joanbm/nvidia-470xx-linux-mainline provides a patched 470 driver that offers support for the latest kernels (including 6.14 and beyond). It would be great if this patched version could be provided via the driver manager because the current “official” one is fast becoming so obsolete that it soon might as well not even be there.

  28. Well, I ran into a problem… Everything upgraded fine, and worked great. No problems. I saw someone post on a Facebook group about successfully doing something in the Cinnamon Wayland session, so I thought I’d try it out. I logged out of my user account, switched the session to Cinnamon on Wayland, and logged in. Everything froze up, and I mean totally locked up tight in every aspect. Just an unmovable mouse cursor on a black screen and nothing else. No drive activity, no movement, nothing. I couldn’t even ctrl-alt-F1 into a terminal. The only thing I could do is force the computer off by holding the power button. After that, I restarted the computer, switched back to my normal non-Wayland Cinnamon session on the login screen, but instead of bringing me to my desktop, it only went back to the login window. So I’m currently at a totally unusable state. I’m not sure if my user account is recoverable. Currently assessing my options.

All this to say: Be careful trying out the Wayland session! It’s listed as experimental for a reason!

    1. Hello,

      One solution could be?

      Open a session and type:

      ‘cinnamon-session-quit –logout –force’

  29. Happy new year to you all. Please, fix the look of KDE applications on Cinnamon this year. Icons are missing. Also, KDE applications look out of place, and they can’t be optimized.

  30. The 22.2 to 22.3 upgrade went with out an issue. Looks great!! Thanks for all the hard work. I have been using Mint since 2015.

The only complaint I have and it’s not related to Mint. It’s Mozilla.

In 22.2 I blocked the upgrade to Thunderbird 140 esr. I stayed at 128.14. I’m not happy with Mozilla deciding what my background color should be in my emails. White or Black only isn’t cutting it with me! I like gray and have it’s been that way for probably 20 years!! I searched the internet for a solution and in 140 there is none. Only composing an email.

So my question is this: Any way to upgrade and retain Thunderbird 128? I can Timeshift back to Mint 22.2.

Again thanks for a awesome upgrade as far as 22.3!!!

    George

  31. Moreover, WINE support has not been working for quite some time. After installing WINE, it isn’t registered to open .exe files.

  32. I successfully updated today on 22.3. The new menu is excellent and very adaptable.
However, I noticed that after the update the battery percentage is charging and discharging by 10 percent, e.g. it is at 89 and after a while it shows 79 percent. The same applies when charging the laptop. And when I go to the power management option and go to the batteries option, the normal percentage of the battery is displayed there.
    My configuration is:
    Lenovo Ideapad 3
    11th generation Intel i3
    Intel uhd graphics
    512Gb SSD

    What could be the problem?

    1. I solved the problem. I drained the laptop battery to 0 and charged it to 100. It seems that the battery needed to be calibrated. Now it’s OK.

  33. I am not a fan of the new WiFi icon. Not only does it display unbelievable low numbers (66% and 76% upon mouse-over but in the menu it’s >90%) but also I’d like to have it represent signal strength as before.

    1. Hmm, I’m still running the “old” Cinnamon on Arch, and just double-checked: The icon shows one grey bar, mouse-over shows 67%. When I open the menu, the signal strength is shown at 100%. Seems to be an older bug.
