I briefly mentioned mintCast in my previous post but I think it deserves a little more attention.
MintCast is a brand new podcast “by the Linux Mint community for all users of Linux”. It’s hosted by Charles Olsen, whom I’m sure you’ll get to know very well, and it’s currently aiming at releasing on a biweekly schedule.
In Episode 1:
- Introduction to the podcast
- SCO loses again
- Linux Mint 6 RC 1 available
- Installing software in Linux — it’s easier than installing in Windows
- Setting up Samba

Note: mintCast is looking for a new logo. If you think you can help don’t hesitate to contact them.
You know how the RSS logo is. I would add three of those curves on top-right of the Linux Mint logo but make them as binary – zeros and ones. I’m not into graphics so I’ll leave other people to use the idea if it’s worth the trouble. I think it would. π
Congratulations for the first mintCast! π
Did I mention a transcript would be very nice? Only if it’s possible – I know it’s a lot of work.
Hi!
I would have thought that the podcast would be in a non proprietary format. I find myself wondering why isn’t there at least an option to download in ogg. Just mp3 and Flash? Hmmm…
How can we escape the proprietary format trap if we continue to use these formats even if we have other free choices? Just a rhetorical question…
Anyway, ogg may be embedded to play as a stream in a browser, just check the Wikipedia online audio samples…
Anyway, the initiative is good, congratulations…
This is very cool. I’ve been using linux for quite a few years now and still feel somewhat like a newbie. Your podcast is very well produced and informative. I enjoyed it very much and ended up having to save it as there is info there I will want later. I do like the idea of a transcript, but if it’s a bunch of extra work it’s just as good to have the mp3. Thanks for this excellent resource. I’ll be looking forward to the next episode.
Haha. Attempt #2! Cool, I hope this time it all works out. I’ll be listening.
@Letconex
i agree.
an idea for next podcasts — how to add your own fav quotes to fortune in terminal.
I think their should be an ogg format for people who don’t use mp3 or flash.
mintCast (Podcast) does not appears on Distrowatch yet.
MP3, it is nice format for broadcasting the mintCast(Podcast) and for attracting windows users because most of them are windows media player heavy users.
Windows Media Player does not reproduce ogg format (correct me if i am wrong). Other audio players for windows do.
So, if a Windows user by other reasons, receives a negative reply
like WMP can’t reproduce this audio format, he immediately gives up of listening to the file. (mintCast – Podcast).
If mintCast to be provided in a ogg format (as additional choice),
a good way out would be a warning in the mintCast-org for avoiding
the use of WMP to listen to the podcast. Winnamp or any audio player
else (with ogg plugin) for Windows may be recommended.
note: just a thought.
I was wondering why the podcast uses aspx. I was under the impression that aspx was a Microsoft web hosting format. I’m not Microsoft bashing, complaining, etc., I’m just curious. It seems that you would use PHP, or something else that is free.
Thanks, Peter
Format and aspx is probably depending on the hosting
I loved the MintCast! Great job guys….
Hi.
That was cool to hear! Loved the Samba bit as I am a wanna be sysadm using linux and windows in the same network.
Keep up the good work.
