Hi everyone. I’d like to apologize for the lack of news this month and for posting this so late.
I had to leave things aside and support people I love while they were going through really difficult times. And I ended up getting sick to top it all off. I don’t want to go in the details with this as it has nothing to do with Linux Mint, but I’d like to apologize for my poor performance recently and for the lack of communication.
I’m almost recovered and I can’t wait to get back into Mint and be fully productive again.
In the meantime the team worked on really cool things. We’ve a lot to talk about and I can’t wait to post about this and share the exciting news with you.
I also made an interesting breakthrough before all of this happened which hasn’t been covered yet. It has to do with how fast applications and windows launch in Cinnamon compared to other window managers. We reduced the numbers drastically and got performance similar to Metacity. More on this soon.
I don’t know yet whether we’ll cover these improvements in separate posts or whether we’ll publish the Monthly News for March early but we’ll cover them very soon either way.
Apologies again. Thank you for your support and patience.
You have nothing to apologize for, Clem. You guys do amazing work, and the fact that you even needed to say anything highlights the degree to which Mint is a product of a small and committed group of people, not a major corporation. I hope that your loved ones are able to make it through these difficult times and see better days ahead, and that you get well soon!
Bonjour Get well soon Sir. You need you, Your family needs you, We need you, The whole world needs you. No apologies needed. Rest and keep smiling. You can do it. This little tune always brightens my day. R.E.M. – Shinny Happy People. Take care. Merci and thanks.
As others have mentioned, no apology needed.
Pray your loved ones are okay, and your health & strength are soon fully restored.
Thank you for all the great work you do, and exciting hint of Cinnamon application and window launching speed improvements.
Take care,
Shalom
Take Care, Clem. Of course family comes first *always*. And, absolutely no apologies needed!
Eager to hear news when you really can spare the time!
From me in Germany, too: No apologies at all needed!
Maybe this will cheer you up:
I’ve just given my 16year-old daughter a new laptop (OK, it’s been refurbished, but it’s in fantastic condition and it’s a very Linux-friendly Thinkpad T430!). She had been using LM 18.3 before, with the XFCE desktop on a very slow machine. On her new laptop I installed LM 18.3 Cinnamon, shrinking the preinstalled WIN10 partition for LM to get as much space as possible.
After having given the laptop to her we tried a few things with LM and I said, “Well, if you really think you’ll need Windows we can always activate it.”
All she said was: “No, I don’t need it any more.”
Hooray!!
Get well soon.
I’m so sorry to see KDE go 🙁
Me too.
Me too I’ll miss Mint/KDE, but that’s not today’s point: I wish you all the best Clem. 🙂
Take care,
P.
#Me too
Do not stress out. You deserve several vacations. I think the next monthly news is early enough for us.
I would like to second that.
Clem, I hope that your loved ones now find themselves in calmer times, and that you are recovering well. Your work is top-class and much appreciated by Mint users, but nothing is as important as your health and well-being, and that of the people you care about. Best Wishes.
Hi Clem. Here’s hoping you feel better soon and your loved ones, too, are embracing much brighter futures. I, myself, went through hell in 2016 and I can promise it’s worth holding on for the brighter days. They do come.
Get well soon. The community needs you.
Sending prayers up for you and those you love, and also a donation to Mint.
Thanks for everything you do.
Sorry to hear you’ve been having a bad time – Our thoughts are with you, Take your time and heal.
we will look forward to the news when it comes.
No worries mate, first things first!
Clem,
Chill. You and the team have earned our patience as well as trust. Once an Irishman I know responded to a Spaniard who was boasting about how relaxed Spain was — so much do that they invented the whole idea of mañana — by telling him there was no word in Irish which conveyed quite the same degree of urgency.
You should experience some of that in Ireland 😉
Warm regards & stay well. We can wait if necessary.
No apologies necessary.
You and the team have left us with a wonderful operating system that will carry us through while you take care of the most important things in life.
My best wishes! Please congratulate all your team, you are doing a great work! I really hope the best for next version, I also I’m sad because you decide drop KDE, anyway maybe in the future you catch it again.
Regards.
Never a need to apologize for helping out family and getting sick. We’re human.
Take care and my thoughts are with you and your family.
Stay strong and get healthy!
no need for apologies…
take care of u
Take care of yourself and all my sympathy to your family.
We all wish you well and hope for the best. Life comes first.
Sending good thoughts your way. Take your time, life always comes first especially when it involves family and being sick.
You and your team do a great job. Rest and get well.
Health – is the foundation! Get well!
If you have a problem, you can contact me, I will try to help you. I’m a vascular surgeon. My email address you have.
Hi Clem, rest up and get your strength back. We all love hearing news about what the team is doing with Mint, but we can wait till you’re good and ready.
I’m echoing the sentiments already expressed here, but as life progresses we all learn what the most important things are. Ups and downs are part of the ride, and no one avoids them. What we all hope for during these times are brighter days ahead, and here’s wishing the same for you and yours Clem.
Linux Mint is already a great testament to your commitment, professionalism and sheer passion for the project, and you’ll have to do a lot worse before even the hint of any justification is necessary.
Whilst I look forward to hearing the latest team news and upcoming developments, tell us when you’re ready for it.
It’s bad that bag things are going on, but isn’t there *ANYONE* in the whole team that could do this but you? Maybe delegate a bit?
Dear Clem
I am so sorry to hear that your loved ones have had difficult times, and I trust things are now much better for them. I am also sorry to hear you have been unwell, and I hope you will be feeling fit and healthy very soon. As for news – don’t worry, you do a fantastic job and we can easily wait until you are fully recovered and things are back to normal. Loved ones and health are far more important than anything else in life. Sending best wishes
Plz do not appologize to us. You owe us nothing, we owe you much more.
I hope your loved ones come in calmer water soon and you will get better!
Wonderfull news that Cinnamon will get more performance and speed, I really look uot for that.
Take care and many thanks for the really cool OS you and your team gave us.
No need to apologize, you don’t owe us anything.
Get well! =]
Is the Segfault development blog dead? It’ been a long time since anything was posted there?
I read somewhere that segfault is dead and development news will be posted here instead.
All of those dead Mint sites could be deleted entirely, a 404 is better than this.
It would sure be nice were updated just one time with a simple notice….
I suppose many visit them assuming there may be something posted of importance just might be posted some day.
I hope you and your loved ones are well soon!
(Just wanted to add: I appreciate this project largely because of its humanistic guiding values. Based on that same human focus, it makes perfect sense to take some time off to tend to your own well-being and the well-being of loved ones. What makes this project great is people and humanism. So it would be hypocritical to ignore the humanness of the people who make up the team. Again, best wishes!)
Well said, D D!
Get well, Clem! As others have said above, you don’t need to apologize. You contribute so much to the well-being of others that we can only be thankful for what you do.
I totally agree with DD: Linux Mint project is not only about great software, it is about people. About humanness, respect and support. There are other creators of software that -unfortunately – tend to ignore an average John. You and your marvellous team are the very opposite of such philosophy. It has its reflection in great OS and this forum, one of the most friendly in the Linux world. We (end users) absolutely appreciate your work and perfectly understand that you may be unavailable, life has its challenges. I may be pathetic writing all this, but it is all true anyway. Get well!
Best wishes from me too…
And many many thanks for what you and LM team gave us all these years (freedom restoration back in computing!)
Well now Clem, we can’t have any of that! If we were neighbors, I’d be bringing you over a pot of my homemade chicken soup. It has noodles half as long as your arm and I swear can cure anything! As already shown, you have a legion of friends who care about you and your mates. Have a care and know we’re all behind you and bid you well! I’ll consult with Livy about this, she’ll know what to do. Expect a fair breeze, some luck and sunshine your way soon!
I wish you better times. You’re doing an incredible work.
For the sake of Mint, I hope more people can help you, so you can more comfortably think about family an health. Take your time with monthly news.
I won’t lie to you, I had to replace my keyboard several times in the last couple of weeks due to the F5 key wearing away to nothing – but things are what they are, everyone hits trouble now and then; sorry to hear it was your turn, and get well soon!
Good luck o/
Health is the most important thing. Hope you feel better soon. However having things snappier in Cinnamon is also important. So hurry up please 🙂 Kidding, get well first. Thank You for letting us know. Also this confirms that LinuxMint does get sick. Need an AntiVirus for developers 🙂
🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂v🙂
Security first!
Well, 4 a human Bing is ‘security’ health..
Get well 🙂
I applaud D D’s comments and second them! Take care of your loved ones and yourself first; then worry about other matters. Time heals many things.
Sometimes Clem you need to take time out and look after your own well being, and if people can’t understand that then it’s their issue : ) I hope you are feel better, and when you get back into it I look forward to what the next Mint has in store. For the time being, 18.3 will suit me just fine .. by far my favorite distro and the one where I have the least problems of all I have tried.
Get well soon Clem, you guys are doing amazing work and helping our ever evolving community. Thanks for all you do !
Dear Clem,
Please do not apologize, you showed great strength in managing Linux Mint and also helping your loved ones in trying times. Get well soon, we all pray for you and your family’s well being. The Mint team is doing great work which touches lives of so many people in a positive way. All that positivity will come back to you. Cheers.
Yes Clem
– Get well soon. First things first – your health and welfare of your family.
Continued thanks to the Team for all the hard work.
No explanation needed. Rest well Clem.
Just wanted to send my gratitude to each and every one of you. Your efforts, passion and commitment are greatly valued and appreciated. Thank you
Greetings Clem
Stress not! – health and family always come first! May you recover speedily and (as always) appreciate the efforts from all involved in maintaining the minty flavor of Linux.
You’ve provided an operating system that enabled me to (1) make the switch to Linux, and (2) be absolutely thrilled that I finally did. I’m loving everything I learn about Linux Mint, and I’m more than pleased with the level of support that’s evident here. So, yes…as far as I’m concerned, no apology necessary. Thank you so much for what you guys do here.
Heal quickly and be well, Clem!
Best wishes from New Zealand – your health is first before everything …
Hi Clem, even if I’m curios about new Mint releases: Take your time – don’t stress!
2 years ago I broke together for 6 weeks due to consequent ignoring the warnings from my body.
As a reminder a little “friend” remained in my ears, telling me when it’s time to relax.
Hello
I wanted to know how to appear in the section Sponsors, indeed I made a donation for LinuxMint but my name does not appear? 🙂 Anyway congratulations for your work, I am a French webmaster and I love LinuxMint.
Clem, I agree with Jack D. Linux Mint won me over to the Linux desktop! I’ve been running Linux servers since Red Hat 7.1 in 2001 and tried several times to use a Linux desktop – various distros including Ubuntu, but was never “convinced” until I tried Linux Mint! My son told me to try Mint and now my work and home desktops and my laptop are running Mint. Never been happier! Thanks, Clem and team!
Sending prayers for you, Clem, and your family. Get well soon!
Rest well and get well soon! Health is more important than anything else.
Hi Clem,
No. 1) – I pray all for you and your love ones and that all will get better very soon!
No. 2) – Thanks for your great efforts on the Mint project. I’m excited to try out the new version of Cinnamon when it is released 🙂
No. 3) – Linux Mint Rocks!
From this week’s report:
> ” … It’s really hard to measure the actual time between the moment the mouse button is clicked and the moment the new application is rendered on the screen, with its window properly mapped, and the mapping window animation completely finished.
> ” It’s not something that can be timed accurately, … ”
Using a screen-video recorder, this is very easy to do.
When installing Mint from a flash-stick, I load “Recordmydesktop”, to record the events. With my 2013 model notebook, it auto-encodes the file. Generally I use thirty frames per second (30 fps).
It helps if you have 16 GB memory, SSD on the motherboard, and a powerful CPU. My old Dell XPS-15 has these, with an Intel i7.
Saving the recorded video can be troublesome sometimes. In these cases, I email or transfer the recorded file to another on-line account. Perhaps this file could also be saved elsewhere on the computer.
The exact timings of the screen events can be determined easily. The FPS gives one cue. If there is a digital-clock displayed with a seconds counter showing, this can also be used.
On less high-powered computer systems, other screen recorders could be used. Personally I have used “Simple Screen Recorder” and “Open Broadcaster Software”.
Thank you so much Jennifer!! have a nice week
Dear Cem,
I hope for a speedy recovery for you and your loved ones!
Dear Clem,
As everybody else already stated, there is no need for an apology. Make sure that you recover completely – better take a few days more than starting too early. You and the team are doing a fantastic job. Mint with Cinnamon sounds tasty and is my favourite OS. With Mint I was able to migrate three people completely from Windows to Linux and all three are happy. All three have my promise to migrate them back to Windows if they wish, but none did ask for that yet. All the best for you and your family!
BR
Stefan
Please offer the Mint 19 with the option to start it with Kernel 4.4.
4.13 doesn’t work well with Acer Travelmate B (external SSD) and Acer Aspire R3-131T.
(For the R3, I have a workaround.)
Hi Goetz,
It’s likely to ship with a 4.15 kernel.
