Many thanks to all the people who reported issues and who helped us fix bugs during the BETA.
All four editions passed QA and will be released as stable in a couple of days.
LMDE received MATE 1.18 early and some updates associated with Linux Mint 18.2. Early this month we’ll backport the rest of the updates and bring LMDE on par with the new release. These updates will include Cinnamon 3.4 and the new Xapps.
Upgrade paths will be opened to let Mint 18 and Mint 18.1 users easily upgrade towards 18.2 from their Update Manager. Announcements will be made when this is ready.
I’d like to thank all the people who donated to us. You sent us 647 donations in a single month!
This is one of the most exciting times in our release cycle. First because you’re about to start using all the features and improvements we’ve been working on, and it’s a real pleasure for us to see you discover them and enjoy them. And second, because once the release is out it opens the door to a new development cycle. We’ve got time, no constraints and we can be ambitious again. Developers can start thinking about big projects and what they want to work on or see achieved for 18.3. I’ve got quite a few ideas myself and there are a few things I just can’t wait to start working on.
But first, let’s enjoy the release of Linux Mint 18.2. Many thanks to all of you who help our project and empower us. We’re now just a few days away.

Any plans about LMDE3 based on Stretch ?
Why don’t you accept bitcoin make a donation?
Hi Clem, and thank you for your hard work and the rest of the team
I have a question regarding the new release of Debian stable (stretch)
are you going to release a new LMDE 3 version or stick with the oldstable (jessie) until further notice ?
Thank you again
Many thanks to all the Mint developers who correct issues and who work hard to fix bugs during the BETA.
Mint Cinnamon 18.2 run beautifully now.
Important note to Clem and team
First Congratulations Clem and team for doing such a good job on the 18.2 release
2nd there are some complaints i have about the 18.3 roadmap
1 remove synaptic from default selection remove synaptic from mintmenu’s favorites
synaptic package manager may be removed from the favorites menu
and does that mean altogether completely if so that irritates me very much why are you planning on removing synaptic package manger i need this and besides there is nothing wrong with it
it enables not only me but others as well to repair their computer
and makes it easier to install all there apps and games
i use it to install all my programs and games and i do not like the software manager because you cant install everything you want in on shot synaptic i choose everything i want and it downloads and installs it just fine and if something goes wrong i can remove the offending package and reinstall it
2 implementing a crash interceptor i,am a windows pro with lots of experience and trust me these do not work and why on earth do this
mint has never crashed on me at all except version 11 and 12
if its rock solid do you really need a crash interceptor
lets not be getting like windows here people use this release to get away from that
3 Firefox show bookmarks bar by default another bad idea it takes up more screen space Mozilla should discontinue this feature
besides the bookmarks menu button is just fine for most users
other than those issues everything else sounds just fine for the next releases 18.3 and 19
and as far as the next lts kernel i recommend it be available to 18.2 users lts kernels are more stable and reliable than non lts ones
say whats going on with the Rhythmbox tray icon its been awhile since that was talked about is it abandoned any ideas on when it maybe ready
another question are there any package mangers like synaptic with the same features or better
@Shawn
I also use Synaptic a Lot, and also Gparted. But this is a distro aimed at new users of Linux, and cutting the bloat is important for them.
any Windows Pro should be able to easily add and remove apps that are in the repos. 😉
Clem has a plan, it seems to be working for many.
Awesome news. I’m an XFCE user, so I like that they are all coming out at once. Although that might mean the downloads will be hammered for a while when they are released. 🙂
I haven’t looked at the 18.3 roadmap, but a nice feature would be to have the ability to download necessary files (ISO?) and upgrade from that instead of upgrading-while-downloading.
I’ll be upgrading from 18.1 this time instead of a fresh install, and am looking forward to yet another great release of Mint!
There’s a bug with the new Xed. When making changes to an existing document, and closing the program, the dialog pops up asking what to do. When clicking “Save,” it saves the changes, but the app doesn’t close as it should.
@Clem.
how about those of us who hv installed the beta edition.
hv installed the Linuxmint 18.2 cinnamon beta. Were there any changes to the beta editions?
If there are, how will i move to the stable when is released.
tnx in advance.
Hi, having been helped back into Forum membership only to discover the 100K PDF file limitations I will wait for the formal release of MintSonyaMATE64 before re-creating multi-part BrucesWay installation and user guides for Lexar 16K USB3 keys, although the Beta version has been great. At this rate Mark Shuttleworth’s original aspirations will be achieved for a thumbnail sized device that can be used with a variety of obsolete host PCs, so it’s small wonder that I expect further sabotage.
Thanks and congrats for all the work!
I only have one wish, and it’s the return of the XFCE edition for the Debian branch!
All the best!
François
Have you considered making all of Mint based on Debian Testing? Ubuntu’s star seems to be falling these days, and upgrading from one major version to another always seems like it causes problems. Debian Testing is basically rolling, so user software could be rapidly updated, but you could release new versions of the Mint software when you were ready, and there wouldn’t be any upgrade problems.
Synaptic is the most important app, you can adjust other apps with it
like virtualbox,
install additional packages easily,
which you cannot achieve with such tools as Software Manager
A question to developers here:
is it possible to do a choose window in installer, like for codecs
so that users can choose to install synaptic or not,
and also to choose between Firefox/Chrome at install time,
So that after install you get synaptic, and browser you want
My granddaughters is 11 years old, she told me, grandpa my laptop is very slow, please check it, then I just install Linux Mint. I explain some issues, boom grandpa thank it is very fast.
Hello! Any news about LMDE3?
Another one wondering what the plans are for LMDE3. Debian 9 is a long way ahead of Debian 8 in terms of support for recent hardware.
I know that porting updates and apps to LMDE2 will likely involve faffing about to get the appearance right with GTK 3.14. This would then have to be repeated for LMDE3 & GTK 3.22, so perhaps worth considering moving straight to LMDE3?
I agree with Nate (#13) literally.
@mensah You can update from 18.2beta to 18.2. Just update system trough Update manager. Sorry Clem, that I reply on this post.

Clem and Team :
Another super job well done. I installed the beta on a replacement laptop ( yes I know I spilled coffee on the other no excuses) and it has been rock solid. You guys are amazing! I am curious however to know if we will be getting the updated gnome commander in our repositrory anytime soon?
again great job!
Clem and all. Excellent news and thank you.. I’ve been playing with the BETA and it works fine. But cannot wait for the final cut – to put into production. I need the the Guest User addition.
@Peter E yes but that is an extra step i have to take
i would not mind if it was removed from the favorites
i could just add it back
i see no reason to remove it completely
yes it is aimed more towards advanced users but it is still not that hard to use i was a Linux Mint newbie once (versions 11 and 12)
i used the software manager it is nice but to install everything you want takes longer than using synaptic
and the problem with the software manager not all files download
sometimes it fails to download the files and just sits there doing nothing is synaptic being abandoned upstream if so that would be a shame because there is nothing like it out there that i know of
I have high hopes for mint i think that it is the best Linux distro out there have you heard Ubuntu is discontinuing unity desktop
Ubuntu Gnome is now Ubuntu unity will be supported for a short time however XFCE is being ported to gtk3 the upcoming 4.14 release is gtk3
very exciting things are going on in the Linux world
may mint be forever rock solid and reliable
@Shawn
sorry for the jab.
I do not know what direction Linux Mint is going, I wish I did.
Consider Debian based operating systems if you want stability.
I don’t think remove Synaptic is a good idea…
Synaptic will still be available, just not installed by default.
I don’t understand all the fuss about that.
@Clem,
What is the recommended kernel for 18.2?
Thanks,
Bill
Hello.
1. I wounder when the tor-launcher will be updated, to reflect the changes from the tor-key ending:
See for instance here:
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/341513/torbrowser-signature-verification-fails-a-glitch-or-an-attack
Should be an easy fix.
2. Private Internet Access is listed as your first sponsor, but they don’t write on their website they support mint-OS of any type. I don’t want to pay them only to find something breaks later on. Perhaps you could talk to them and get some promise of support? Then I’ll happily support your supporter.
Thanks for all your effort.
