  1. Hello, Clem; hello, Mint Developers; hello, fellow Minters:

This is wonderful news! I continue to be amazed at the wonderful work Clem and the developers produce. From an appreciative Linux Minter to the entire gang…THANK YOU!!!

  2. After upgrading Xfce from 17.1 to 17.2 “xfce4-appearance-settings” only shows a short popup. Using the termial I get the following message:

    >(xfce4-appearance-settings:2520): GLib-ERROR **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.40.2/./glib/gmem.c:133: failed to allocate 4096 bytes Trace/Breakpoint ausgelöst

  3. Hi Clem et al.

I have full disk encryption with Linux Mint MATE 17.1. I’d like to upgrade to 17.2 but read a few threads where things went bad. Is full disk encryption a problem with upgrading Mint via the Update Manager?

    Cheers.

    Edit by Clem: No.

  4. Hi Clem,

Thank’s for quick upgrade for Xfce and KDE desktops before stable ISO’s.

Could you add inxi 2.x in repository for support 3D or Display controller as defines GPU’s.

    Best Regards

  5. Linux Mint Xfce upgraded to the release 17.2: it works like a charm.
    Merci beaucoup, Clément ! 🙂

  6. I upgraded my HP Mini netbook with Intel Atom N270 cpu and Intel 945GSE graphics (i915 driver) from 17.1 to 17.2 via Update Manager. Upon rebooting I get a black screen and no way to interact including opening a terminal window for reboot (Ctrl-Alt-F1). This is with the 3.16.0-38 kernel. However, if I reboot and select the 3.13.0-37 kernel in GRUB, the system works fine. I tried installing newer 3.16 kernels using Update Manager, but these do not fix the problem. Any ideas? Thanks.

  7. Linux Mint MATE upgraded to the release 17.2 on 2 laptops: modern ASUS intel i7 64 bits and old Samsung 32 bits.
No problem during and post-update !
Thanks a lot for your good job.
    Stefan

  8. Two computers updated using RC they are up and running with not a hiccup! Stable Stable Stable! Thanks to especially the KDE team for a job well done.

  12. Hi there,

Thanks for your great work. I upgraded from 17.1 to 17.2 Xfce on an old Acer 2023 with a Pentium M 1600. I have some issues with the graphics now (ATI Mob-Radeon9700). There is a grey line with a shadow on the left hand side, unfortunately. Is there anything that can be done about it?

Apart from that, just a fantastic update!

    Greetings from Germany

    Micky

  13. A lot of thanks to Clem and all Mint developers for great job!

I am a little bit surprised, that upgrade to 17.2 is possible for KDE and XFCE editions before their official release. Does it mean, that after upgrade we’ll have the system in RC state, or it will completely correspond to release?

  14. having the same trouble as Fritx Says:
xfce4-appearance-settings wont stay open for any than a few
seconds not that I wont to chance those setting any time
soon but nice if I could .

  15. @Menak Vishap

I just updated and it seems to be final version (or at least there is no indication that it is a RC version).

  16. Hello! Upgrade isn’t work. I have 17.1 XFCE with custom kernel 4.1.3. After quick install I have 17.1. What should I do?

  17. Hi, I’ve updated XFCE 17.1 -> 17.2 and get blank screen after resume on Lenovo B590 (Celeron 1000M, lspci: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)) . Not every time, but very often. Please help! The same on 3.16.0-34, 3.16.0-38, 3.16.0-44 kernels. System is working, I can ssh to it from another computer to issue a reboot, as I cannot wake up the screen 🙁

  18. After upgrading 17.1 xfce to 17.2, login screen got blank and even graphic doesn’t function well, blur screen, hungs.

  19. @10,11

When you go to the downloads page for Linux Mint, the links for KDE/XFCE are labelled “RC”. I don’t know if they are really RC, but if you could wait a few days longer, all will (probably) be revealed…

  20. Hello Clem and developers of linuxmint
two days ago I updated my Linux Mint Xfce to the Version 17.2 rafaela and I have the following inconvenience:
from an application such as telegram or calibre I try to open a document whose name has spaces, this window error is generated ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/uzjj4m917u4msmm/error.jpg?dl=0 ); the url worked correctly in the previous version (17.1).

    Thank you

  21. i’m missing out on so much music. i pay for internet service, have to see all the ads, what’s the deal w/the damn adobe monthly fee? it’s preventing artist’s exposure. it rather ticks me off. i’m poor man! something is very wrong here & i don’t think it’s me!

  22. Hi, Clem and the mint team, i have just updated my hp mini 110 from linux mint XFCE 17.1 to 17.2. It was so fast and exceptionally well, it went out without any drama. KUDOS!!!! it took about 20 mins, even our bandspeed is notorously sloow @ 2mbps. I’m really impress and a satisfied mint user.

  23. One more thing:
After upgrading from 17.1 to 17.2 (xfce edition), the mdm screen (Mint-X) slide show doesn’t work (black background). After closer inspection, it is because mint-backgrounds-rafaela is not installed by the upgrader. However, the file slideshow.conf is shipped configured to use the backgrounds from the aforementioned package.

  24. Bounjour, aprés le mise en niveau vers 17.2 XFCE il n’y pas imafe en login..écran noir.Merci pour le travail 🙂

  25. LM 17.2 KDE

Shutdown process freezes. It shows that the process start the monitor is darker but remains like that and will not be finished.

  26. After upgrading from 17.1 to 17.2 (xfce edition), what I can say so far:

The MDM login takes longer than expected. According to release notes the code here as been improved and the login process should be faster (or just more consistent ?); this is the opposite in my case.

Strange mouse behaviour in LibreOffice calc: I had difficulties to reach my top toolbox icons, as if my mouse would bump on a roof… I cannot reproduce this today; I guess the system needed to settle drown a little after some reboots.

BTW, I still have some unwilling cursor jumps while typing text. I never really found out what could be the reason of this. I first thought my fingers hit the touchpad making the cursor jumping to another place; still not convince about this. Does anyone ever encountered this king of annoying thing ?

Overall, even though I haven’t tried everything yet, all my stuff seems to work just fine with Rafaela/xfce. Thanks for the good work.

  27. After upgrade xfce4-appearance-settings either does not open or opens and closes suddenly. After removing manually installed themes and icons then it works ok. So with the stock themes there is no problem.

  28. Hi.When I try to update from 17.1 to 17.2 and follow this instructions,the sistem sais me that mint-meta-mate is demagen…so I can’t update it.What I have to do???

    Thanks

  29. i try to update my pc but… my “update manager” can not refresh the update list..

the message that give me is this…

“Could not refresh the list of updates. E:Encountered a section with no package: header, E:problem with mergelist/var/lib/apt/lists/repo.steampowered.com_steam_discs_precise_steam_i18n_translation-en, E:the package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.”

how can i solve this problem ? ?

  30. Looking good since the upgrade. The download page still has the Release Candidate and not the final version posted though. Would be nice to get that updated for those that want a fresh install available.

  31. @Saikat Das

I guess it is; you just don’t have the ISO yet. But if you’re a 17 user already, you can reach step 17.2 with the upgrade option

  32. Hi Mint Team,

I updated to 17.2 XFCE two days ago. Thanks for the effort but it seems some issues popped up for this upgrade.

I am getting the same error as sainete reports above. Whenever I open a file with spaces in Double Commander, it will fail to open with a similar error message as sainete posted. It did not do this before.

A related error (I believe) also manifests when I click on a magnet link in any browser. It will bring up my default client’s (Deluge) window but it will not show the “add a torrent” dialog. Thus I may have to manually copy+paste the magnet link to Deluge.

And as always, I am experiencing a bit of a sluggish performance compared to 17.1. I also notice a similar degradation when I upgraded from 17.0 to 17.1. But this one is much worse and apps that used to open instantaneously now takes up to three seconds to launch.

Htop reports that I usually use up all of my RAM (8GB) and is not freeing it up (I have no swap space) when I terminate a big app (such as the browser).

I am thinking of reinstalling/downgrading. Can I back up my /Home/*USER* folder reinstall it on 17.1 even though it might have 17.2 configuration files?

  33. Also, in 17.2, the power icon on the tray shows a charging battery icon even when it is disconnected and discharging. I can no longer see the battery charge at a glance and have to open power settings to see my battery level.

  34. Dan – can you do a fresh install? Is your /home partition separate from root?

The reason I ask, is because I upgraded to 17.2 Cinnamon from 17.1 Cinnamon. I experienced sluggishness in 17.1, which was worse in 17.2. Luckily, my /home partition was separate, so I did a fresh install of 17.2 Cinnamon, and the sluggishness disappeared.

I can’t claim full “cause and effect”, and I can’t claim that XFCE will do the same, but I do note that even though Clem and crew have worked hard to make upgrades smooth, it’s still recommended to do a fresh install, if possible.

  35. @Sebastien (p.32)
The cursor jumping is known to me ever since my laptop 🙂 Though I haven’t yet installed 17.2 (I’d rather wait for an official iso first).

  36. Bonjour,depuis que j’ai fait l’upgrade vers 17.2 je n’ai pas l’icone de batterie.Aussi je n’ai pas les image en login…l’ecrane est noir.Voila pour moi.J’ai 64bit

  37. Hi Clem et al,

Firstly thanks to all the Mint & Xfce developers.

Updated from 17.1 to 17.2 Xfce & noted the following minor issues, some of which are mentioned above. Lenovo Y400 1.66Ghz (2006), Nvidia GeFroce Go 7300.

MDM login in – Default slide show not working.
    Xfce4-appearance-settings – its a ‘you have it & you don’t’ situation, after a 3-4 tries its available.
xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin – Battery & Brightness indicator option no longer available.
Cairo Dock – There is a grey line with a shadow if Dock is active, exit Dock line disappear.
Thunar – Icon depicts default rather than selected icon theme.
Catfish – Icon descriptions on menu showing gibberish.
Partitioned drives – No longer shown on desktop although set to show.

  38. upgrade 17.1 to 17.2 Xfce
Xfce is great and the upgrade is working wonderfully.

I am happy to report the “USB Image Writer” is now displaying a proper progress bar and is not slowing all other tasks.

  39. Hi Clem et al,

Firstly thanks to all the Mint & Xfce developers.

Upgraded from 17.1 to 17.2 a few days ago and noted the following issues, some of which are mentioned above. Hopefully these will be resolved in the updates.
    Lenove Y400 (2007) Nvidia GeForce Go 7300 (256).

Mdm Log-in screen – default slide show doesn’t work.
Xfce4-appearance-settings – its ‘sometimes you have it, sometimes you don’t’ situation. Sometimes its 1 click, sometimes after 3-4 tries.
Xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin – battery & brightness icon & option no longer available.
Cairo Dock – there is a grey line with a shadow if dock is active, exit dock line disappears.
Thunar – icon sets to default rather than chosen icon theme on whiskermenu.
Catfish – Menu description shows gibberish rather than English.
(All the above were fine in 17.1)

  40. My apologies for the earlier double post.

Xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin – the battery & brightness icon/option is now combined in “Power Manager Plugin” but the brightness indicator doesn’t move in relation to keyboard adjustments. Slider does adjust brightness if moved though.

Thanks for your patience to a relative new mint user who should have probably posted all this under another in another topic in the forums.

    Cheers.

  41. Just upgraded from 17 to 17.2, it was effortless! Thanks for all the hard work you guys put in to making Mint so good. Regards Gilly

  42. Bonjour, avec le mise à jour d’aujourd’hui Xfce 64bit le bug avec les image en login c’est corriger.Il reste l’icone la batterie qui n’es pas là et quand j’appuis sur menu ça prend du temps pour ouvrir.
    Merci 🙂

  43. I updated to Linux Mint 17.2 64-Bit KDE. Only big problem remaining from 17.1 version is that I can’t get anyway to have sound from my Asus Xonar DX sound card. I have a monitor connected with a NVIDIA GTX 660 VGA through HDMI and it always gets NVIDIA HDMI audio as a default and no way to choose or get sound from my sound card Asus Xonar DX. For the VGA I manually installed NVIDIA 352.30 driver.

The way to get audio back to work with Asus Xonar DX was to:
    – On konsole: sudo apt-get remove –purge alsa-base pulseaudio
    – On konsole: sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio
    – On konsole: sudo alsa force-reload
    – Reboot

Also to get 100% volume of my Asus Xonar DX I had to install gnome-alsamixer and max out the volume there once. But this was since 17.0 version I don’t know if this is fixed anyway in latest 17.2 version.

For volume settings I uninstall pavucontrol and install kmix instead, I think is better for KDE version. But to manage kmix to start minimized after every boot I had to:
    – Re-install kdebase-bin
    – On konsole: ksystraycmd –startonshow –keeprunning –icon kmix kmix
    – Reboot with konsole open

One minnor complain in generall that many popular software versions given through software centre are outdated.

Many thanks for the effort, updating from 17.0 KDE to 17.1 and to 17.2 was a piece of cake.

Hope you’ll upload soon the ISO for Linux Mint 17.2 Final for the KDE 64-Bit version.

  44. @Vlad(48):

would you suggest that it’s not a system issue ? It’s kind of weird though: I’m using laptops for decades now and I don’t remember I experienced such a behaviour before Mint 17 (maybe Mint 13 but surely not in Mint 9 nor previously on Ubuntu). My wife uses Mint 17 as well and she noticed this behaviour too on her Asus netbook.

  45. Hi! Thanks for the great upgrade with xfce. I have one issue now. At start up, after grub and immediately after entering my password I get this message:
“User’s $HOME/.dmrc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved. Files should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. User’s $HOME directory must be owned by user and not writeable by other users.”

I simply press the “ok” button and it gets me to my regular desktop and this linux pc is working fine, so far. This is a dell 755 Optiplex that ran 17.1 great with no errors for around a year and just wanted improvements on my pc. Thank you for your assistance.

  46. Found my .dmrc solution and that is fixed now. 🙂
Also had a reboot issue but fixed that issue too.
Keep up the great work. Thank you.

  47. I forgot to mention a problem that exist since forever in Linux Mint with the scrolling speed of some wireless mouses. I have Microsoft’s Wireless Desktop 3000 mouse and no matter what setting I make the scrolling speed is always so very fast.

The only temporary solution is to unplug and plug in again the wireless receiver/transmitter of the mouse and keyboard. That fixes the problem untlil next boot. I could fix a way to automatically unmount-mount the usb wireless receiver/transmitter at every boot to check if that could be a possible solution.

Has anyone found a permanent fix for the fast scrolling speed issue? I am on Linux Mint 17.2 KDE 64-Bit but I also had this problem with Cinnamon in previous versions.

  48. Hi Clem (and others),

I have nailed two specific problems with Mint 17 (using it since last year and upgraded regularly):

    – When I unmount a ftp mount (to an xbox console) and the xbox is switched off, Cinnamon crashes, I have to restart it with the “Files” icon on the bar.

    – The FTP mounts asks whether the password should be kept in memory once, for the whole session or forever, but only remembers for the session, whatever I reply to the ftp client
