Monthly News – July 2015

July was all about the releases, a lot of testing and bug fixing 🙂

The Cinnamon and MATE editions of Linux Mint 17.2 were released and users of these editions were able to upgrade from Linux Mint 17 and 17.1. Everything went well and the reception was very good. It was a real pleasure for us to see you discover the improvements we worked on in the last 6 months.

OEM and no-codecs installation images should become available tomorrow.

LMDE 2 Betsy received all the improvements and new packages that were held during the RC phases.

We’re now in the RC phase for the Xfce and KDE editions. So far most of the bugs were either minor or cosmetic. The upgrade paths for these two editions were also successfully tested and will be open to 17 and 17.1 users at around the same time as the stable releases, around the end of the month.

By the beginning of August we should be ready to start developing again. Many ideas were kept for the next development cycle, some commits are already there, pull requests were held, developers are probably eager to see things move again. It’s an exciting phase of the project, where we’ve no idea what the next version will be like, but we’ve got a lot of ideas and resources at our disposal and plenty of time to get ambitious 🙂

Many thanks to all the people who donated to us, and to our sponsors for supporting us. A big thank you also to the 10% of users (according to our torrent stats) who take the time to test the RC releases. The feedback you give us during the RC is a huge opportunity for us to improve and Linux Mint often gets significant improvements prior to stable releases (this time around I can’t help but think at how you allowed us to improve EFI support and NVIDIA Prime, so thanks a lot for that). You all help us in very different ways, we don’t often get the chance to communicate back or to acknowledge individual efforts, but we’re very grateful to be helped so much.

See you all in August 🙂

  1. Hey, since Linux Mint primarily gets funded through donations, which are then in-turn used to pay wages for the dev team, I suggest that you move to Patreon for the community sponsors section.

I suppose it would also increase Linux Mint exposure. Patreon is a kind of on-going commintment where you should get $x every month depending on how much people donate. Have a look.

  2. 😀 you guys rock 😀 keep going keep going 😀
Mint has become one of THE BEST Linux work/productivity OS.
There are folks who nag and moan about “it crashes while experimenting and yadayada” <- Seriously? If some folks really wanna experiment crashing should be the least of their worries. I have been using Mint on my laptop and primary Desktop for Work/productivity[the type of work PCs and OperatingSystems were built to do for the common folks] ROCKSOLID, driver support works GREAT too :D.

  3. Hi Clem

The file manager queue operations is working out really nicely. Are you considering adding the ability to pause an operation so you can start another…or even promote an operation up the queue? That would make it that little bit better.

Upgraded to 17.2 and it is all running nicely. Thank you for you hard work. 🙂

Edit by Clem: Hi, maybe at a later stage. For the immediate future I’m actually of the opinion to simplify things a bit more. For instance we rely heavily on something called gvfs and I wouldn’t mind replacing calls to it when they’re not necessary with direct implementations (the biggest gain would be to detach operations from one another, so that one hanging doesn’t hang the others).

  4. Congratulations to the whole team ! 🙂

I have been using Mint since January 2013, beginning with LMDE and then Mint Xfce 15, and now I’m very happy to use Mint Xfce 17, a great distro that is second to none ! 🙂

I’m to upgrade to 17.2 in order to test Xfce 4.12.

    Thank you all !

  5. Is it intentional that the upgrade to 17.2 was enabled for XFCE/KDE now? Just updated mint-update-info to 1.3 on the standard repos and since then I can upgrade to 17.2 Rafaela KDE

Edit by Clem: Yes, the paths were tested and it was deemed no significant bug fixes would impact them during now and the stable releases.

  6. There are still problems with:
Settings > Window Manager > Keyboard

To remove some of the shortcuts, it takes 2 clicks of ‘Clear’.
    When I look at: xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml
I see duplicates, most prefaced by ‘Primary’ and some with ‘Control’.
I suspect the ‘Control’ versions are the ones causing trouble.

For example, after selecting ‘Clear’ (twice for most of the shortcuts) these still remain:

Edit by Clem: The default configuration was fixed following your first comment. Unfortunately the user config is done by diff, so to properly test this you would need to remove your keyboard config file, make sure you’ve got the latest mint-artwork-xfce and and let Xfce regenerate it.

  9. Exciting times for Mint. The uniform positivity of every single review I’ve read for 17.2 is astounding!

To respond to a couple of previous posts:

-I don’t know much about Patreon, but if (as it sounds) it means having to sign up to a monthly debit, Mint wouldn’t see a penny from me and I suspect many others. I like to give when I’m feeling generous- which seemed to be right around the release of 17.2!

-This is not the appropriate place to raise bug reports.

Edit by Clem: Hi, I should have commented on the first comment. Anyway, we do have donors who support us when they feel like it (some give once, some give numerous times), but we also have “sponsors”. What we call sponsors are simply donors who subscribed to a monthly paypal donation. That mechanism is there already and it’s working really well. We’re receiving a huge amount of support from our community.

  10. The only problem I have with Mint 17.2 Xfce is a broken backlight brightness controll, and the screen is never turned off even though it should. Big problem :(. It was also broken in Xubuntu 14.04.

  11. On the subject of development restarting, a nomination for the Mate papercuts project, if I may:

    – The ability to use the Super key both in shortcuts (eg “Super+e” to open the home directory) and to open the Mint Menu (mintmenu issue #98).

I don’t know how transferable the Cinnamon fix is (Cinnamon issue #549), but it would be very useful…

Also related, the ability to bind Super_R to the Mint Menu in addition to Super_L (as in Cinnamon issue #630).

Many thanks for all the team’s hard work.

  12. Thanks for all the hard work, guys! Looking forward to the XFCE release. Now constantly asking myself, why don’t more people know about this great OS?

  13. GREAT to see that the contributions keep increasing, even if a little slowly. Here’s hoping that the $20k/month level arrives soon!

  14. Mint=Awesome! I have been a long time user. You guys do a great job!

Question: With the recent FSF news and the Jonathan Riddell debauchery, what is the time frame of dropping Ubuntu completely, 100% embracing Debian and making Mint the Debian King? Ubuntu’s Corporate Mentality is going to eventually licence everyone to death!!!

IMO… I believe it’s time for Mint to kick Ubuntu “Off-The-Thrown” and become the new De-Facto-Standard!!!

  15. “Edit by Clem: Hi, maybe at a later stage. For the immediate future I’m actually of the opinion to simplify things a bit more. That sounds great Clem. I’m all for the code being simplified and cleaned up wherever possible. Keep up the awesome work. 🙂

    Gabriel

  16. @Clem- understood. Currently you have the right mix of contribution options- I was really advising against any suggestions that would limit that. I’ve no problem with Patreon as long as there’s still a method for ‘one offs’.

  17. I have been seeding the linux mint torrents to aid in the bandwidth easing, as servers can really be bogged down and slowed. I am so happy to be using linux mint cinnamon edition (but with lxde as the main window manager), it just kicks arse! 🙂

  18. Yeah! Great release! Congratulations! 17.2 Cinnamon works very well and stable. But i’m missing the old style theme choose and manipulation. 17.2 is not so useful than versions before.

But anyway: Linux Mint is the BEST Linux distribution ever!!!

  19. Congrats on the new release! I have long wanted to use Mint as my primary OS. It is everything I want in how a desktop OS should function and it looks like it is time to install the update in VirtualBox.

I keep testing each release on my MacBook Pro but because of the wacky implementation of the integrated Intel vs. the AMD discrete chip on the “Early 2011” model I can’t get switching to work. Everything (and I mean everything keyboard lighting, sound, wifi, etc) all seem to work great right away but the graphics driver issues are beyond my time and abilities with Linux. (I want to use my system not spend days/weeks trying to track down kernel patches in long forum threads, integrating and compiling them, and testing things hoping I don’t hopelessly break the install.) I want to dump Apple but I don’t have the funds to run out and buy a new machine and because I do a lot of work in Blender the full power of the discrete graphics is important for me. If there was any hope for Mint to work fully on my system I would gladly throw $100 or do $10/mth via patreon.

  20. A big thanks to you Clem, and your team.
I’m writing this on a Dell Dimension 3000 (a single core Intel Pentium 4 CPU clocked at 2793.049 MHz and using an Intel 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller, GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 865G x86/MMX/SSE2 GLX version: 1.3 Mesa 10.1.3) after installing Mint 17.2 XFCE RC last week. It’s a credit to you all how quick it runs on this device.

But irrespective of whether it is Cinnamon, Mate or XFCE RC they all installed on this Dell machine and an old Dell Optimus that I have, without a single problem. Unfortunately the same could not be said for the Acer Aspire One and the Macbook Pro (excluding the broadcom issue). The difference – one word Nvidia! The Dell machines used Intel graphics, the latter used Nvidia.
That is not to say that I didn’t get them working eventually with the Nvidia driver, but simply downloading the Nvidia driver in Software Manager did not work. I think more work needs to go into fixing this – unfortunately. I’m sure you knew this though, a cursory glance through the comments for any RC, and Nvidia appears repeatedly 🙁

But you speak of future development, I think at launch time, there needs to be better promotion of the tutorials on the Linuxmint website in the Release Notes.
What do i mean, well I fixed my Nvidia problems following the advice of a tutorial on your website http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/331 – yes, on both devices, these two simple lines fixed the problem on both devices.

I’m not saying that you can link to every tutorial in the Release Notes, but for the common problems with installation (sound cards,Nvidia, disk partition, vpn, etc), we should say in the Release Notes, there’s a tutorial for that. Let’s be honest there are tutorials there for almost everything, we need to promote them. This immediately gives the impression to noobies that there is greater support from the Mint community – and brings more users to the website.

  21. I love LM but for the life of me cannot figure out how to enable ‘Redmond’ mode for the MATE version. For my MATE distro I’m using UbuntuMATE instead. I always disliked system notifications being caught an compiled into a list rather than just flashing the toolbar icon. Definitely stinks for IMs. MATE in Redmond mode is the only DE that does this.

I’d just use Mint for everything if this option were not removed from Mint’s version of MATE. I still use Mint w/Cinnamon where I want to, but the MATE version is so close to gimped that there’s no point to it existing.

  22. Hi Clem massive thanks to you and your team for yet another great update I’ve been using mint on and off for a few years now but I am now finally sticking to mint I get no issues keep up the excellent works thanks to you all

  23. @Mark (#24):
Did you install the gnome themes as well?
    I think it’s there.
In the Metacity themes (to be manually installed as well), there’s a Redmond theme also I think.
Will check tonight, I’m reinstalling 17.2 MATE from scratch.

  24. Update:
The Redmond controls are right there in the default Mint install.
In the Appearance window, click on Customize (or whatever it’s called in english, I use the french locale) and you’ll see Redmond there.
For the window decoration, there’s WinME.
If you install metacity-themes, you get a window decoration called Redmond which looks fancier than WinME.

  25. Hello –

Just updated to 17.2, and all is well..running this on an older laptop (HP/Compaq 6710b with 2G of memory) … satisfied so far ! Thx for making Mint even better…

  26. Thanks François! I didn’t expect a response. I thought I was just complaining. 😀 I will try this out soon. I’m currently running Mint (Cinnamon) on this machine so installing MATE and testing this should be painless.

And thank you. Your LTS strategy is just perfect. That’s what got me over to Mint. Continual improvement but with stability. No one else has that. And many French people involved! I worked in France for 6 months a few years back in Nord Pas de Calais. I loved it. My wife and I are looking to relocate to Spain and hopefully near the French border.

I’ll report back once I verify this.

  27. Okay, so all you have to do to upgrade is goto Update Manager => Edit => “Upgrade to Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela”—simple as updating FireFox or ThunderBird (no messing with downloading and running ISO images or terminal…other than to update grub?)?
As of now, I have Linux Mint 17.0, Mate 1.81 broken down into four partitions—/boot(1 GiB), /(25 GiB), /home(500 GiB), /.BackUp(300 GiB)—as well as (since I almost exclusively hibernate) a 5 GiB swap (though System Monitor => Resources shows a Memory of 3.7 GiB and a Swap of 10.0 GiB—?). Also, Iʼve recently been experimenting with different Python list types (seeing how big I can index size them) and FireFox was hanging with (I think it was) a “futex_wait_queue_me” Waiting Channel message, with the advised cure being to upgrade the kernel to the 3.19 level, which seemed to work (Iʼm currently 3.19.0-23-generic).
Will Mint 17.2 seemlessly upgrade without harassing the non-system/application files in /home or anything in /.BackUp (since they are separate partitions), as well as preserve all of the current preferences (taskbar contents and arrangement, colors/fonts/sounds, etc.)—again, like upgrading FireFox or ThunderBird—unlike upgrading from Mint 13 to 17?

  28. Many thanks Linux Mint… i am both 7.1, 7.2 But should i say, I prefer 7.1… more friendly… Lots of works for you managing this. You’re great.
I am 78 years old and migrate frow Windows to Linux with joy! Stay alive!
    Jacques

  29. I’ve moved to LMDE 17.2 running Cinnamon and Mate. It is truly a joy to use. I’ve tried multiple distros and always come back to Mint. Thanks for all the hard work and the commitment to quality.
