  1. Well-deserved congratulations to Clem and the development team on the RC releases of both Mint 14 MATE and Mint 14 Cinnamon. I have installed both editions and can honestly say that these are the most stable Mint releases I’ve used in the past 3 years. I am particularly impressed with Mint 14 Cinnamon. With ATI graphics that are only supported with the opensource driver, I still get all Cinnamon effects with no lag in performance at all. I can now use the more modern update to the classic desktop!

  2. Running Mint 14 Cinnamon x64 on my HP DV6 laptop with ATI graphics. Love all of the improvements to the interface! Looking forward to seeing the menu text fix, very minor. Cinnamon is making some huge strides and Nemo is great too. Very nice work!

  3. Both Mate and Cinnamon versions (32-bit only tested so far – I’ll check the 64-bit versions soon) are generally working very well. Two minor caveats:

1 With the arrival of Ubuntu 12.10, I began experiencing a significant delay in logging into secure wireless networks. The problem lies in the dialog rather than the login process itself. For some reason, you have to wait several seconds before the dialog will accept password input. I can’t imagine why, but the problem seems to have been exacerbated in Nadia RC.

2 I have an external USB disk with several data partitions (three ext4 and one NTFS). One of them is the /home partition for Nadia. I’ve prevented the other partitions from appearing on the desktop, but Nautilus still insists on opening them automatically immediately after I log in. A minor issue, of course, but slightly untidy.

Well done, though, this is an admirably stable RC, there were no glitches during the installation process, and both Mate and Cinnamon are coming along very nicely.

  4. Both releases seem really great so far. I am very excited to try them out more. Great job Clem and team – this is a very good and polished release, and it seems to overcome a lot of the problems with Ubuntu 12.10.

  5. I’ve been using linux mint since vr8 (Helena) and its been getting better and better with each version. I downloaded 14rc cinnamon and its great, stable and clearly shows that the team have been listening to the community, tweaked it for the better. My only problem with linux mint is the nvidia drivers (more nvidia’s problem than linux) but other than that great work, keep it up 🙂

  6. I finally made the jump from ubuntu to Linux mint last night. So my timing sucks just a little less than the time I bought a ppc ibook only for apple to move to intel a few weeks later.

Nevertheless it means I can do a fresh install without too much worry, but I wish I had waited a few more hours. I’m excited, here goes…

  7. Wow what an excellent release this is ! I can’t believe how good and stable Cinnamon and Nemo are for their young age. Plus all the extra Cinnamon and MDM themes added are great ! The only thing that bugs me as a french canadian user is that the Cinnamon calendar is still in english, as well as some contextual menu options. But other then that, I can’t wait to see what Cinnamon will be like in the future as it is already good !
Congratulations to Clem and the Linux Mint team !

Edit by Clem: Check the translations for your locale at https://translations.launchpad.net/linuxmint/isadora and don’t hesitate to complete them, it’s possible it’s missing a few strings.

  8. Any progress made on the NIC problems. I have been having serious problems will the network drops since the release of cinnamon and have seen other people having problems with it to. I have not been able to upgrade because of this problem. I have looked at post in forums and started my own post with no solution even submitted a bug report. I really would like to start using cinnamon but can’t until these issues are gone. I hope to be using it cinnamon soon…

  9. Cinnamon 1.6.6 runs fast and stable. WOW!

    1. I can not run ubuntuone-client. It is installed but i can not run it.

    2. When i try to install Skype from the Softwarecenter the softwarecenter freezes and if i try to install it from ther terminal i get the error message that the ia32_libs-multiarch will not be installed. Also i can not install it manually.

  10. Just booted after install. The Live version looked great. After install though I had no visuals at all. 🙁 So sad for me…

  11. First of all: Congatulations with Nadia! Installed on virtualbox, looks fine. I will be installing this week. Think I’ll keep MDM now there’s so much theming choice, instead of lightdm (the Ubuntu login screen is still very elegant)

Still one point as this is the release candidate: keyboard navigation in MintMenu. Wouldn’t it be more logical to have focus on the top favorite item after pushing the Meta key? Of course I can use Alt-left to get there, but then the focus is hardly visible and is completely lost navigating back to the app-menu. Old-classic MintMenu was better in this respect.

    Still: great work!!!!

  12. Clem, great releases, solid and with a impressive list of improvements 🙂

    my findings:

    mintinstall:
    – can’t handle replaces; issue opened here https://github.com/linuxmint/mintinstall/issues/14
    – doesn’t fail graciously with impossible situations: try to install wine (requires multiarch and as far as i can see it’s not enabled in quantal http://askubuntu.com/questions/204393/why-is-wine-not-installable-on-my-system ) and stalls and greys out (i guess it’s the same issue McLovin sees here http://community.linuxmint.com/iso/view/153 – picasa is also a 32bit app)

    mdm:
-first boot after install (using the nouveau drivers) the imput fields for username and p/w are unreadable; all it’s fine after installing nvidia (no idea if it’s replicable)

  13. Firewall Configuration (gufw) is not shown in the menu (at least on MATE). Looking at the file /usr/share/applications/gufw.desktop, it has the setting “OnlyShowIn=Unity;”. If I remove that line, Firewall Configuration is shown in the menu again.

With Jockey packages removed, I had expected DDM to be installed. Or am I missing something?

Aside from that, congrats on the new release! 😀

Edit by Clem: DDM didn’t make it in. We’re hoping to have it in LMDE though, and then later hopefully in Mint 15.

  14. Wow…

    I really love Mint !
I use Mate 1.4 now and i am totally fan !

Installing Mint systems everywhere, helping the non-computing geeks to see Linux is simply… simple and awesome.

Clem, thx for this magnificent gift to all of us.

  15. Does 32-bit version require pae CPU too?

Lots of Pentium Ms got screwed by *buntu 12.10…

Edit by Clem: Yes, unfortunately. We deviated from Ubuntu for the Linux Mint 13 LTS release and provided a non-PAE kernel on the the 32-bit ISOs though.

  16. Looks great. When I try though to edit the bottom panel (only have the one) and go to panel settings and click “Use customized panel size (otherwise it’s defined by the theme) and also check Allow Cinnamon to scale panel text and icons according to panel heights and then increase the Bottom panel height to 35, my text get scrambled (unreadable) the Menu text on the panel, open windows on the panel and the text part of the date although the number read ok.

Thanks for all your hard work. I am new to Linux and I love it, thanks to Mint.

  17. ia32-libs can’t be downloaded in the 64-bit version of MATE. I’ve tried to install this 4 times. I haven’t tried it in Cinnamon 64-bit.

  18. I was able to fix this, but it will only work by running this:

    sudo vi /etc/apt/preferences

***To write in file, enter these characters :wq

Copy and paste this in the file which is located in the Terminal:

    Package: *
    Pin: release a=quantal*
    Pin-Priority: 2012

run a dist-upgrade (I know Clem and the gang advise against this, but the 32-bit binaries are crucial to have if you want Google Earth, Skype and proprietary AMD drivers to work).

Then, install the ia32-libs. From what I read, Ubuntu may have left out this. On the other hand, everything worked fine in Xubuntu 12.10.

This needs to be fixed, as trying to do install Skype within the GUI freezes up the Software Manager. Synaptic kicks it back each time as well.

Edit by Clem: Thanks for investigating but please don’t mess with the priorities. We took note of this problem and it will be fixed.

  19. Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon RC installed flawlessly
(full install on a usb flashdrive).

Firewall (gufw) doesn’t appear in Cinnamon’s menu – but that has been the only issue so far.

Excited to see all the improvements in Cinnamon and Nemo is great.
Love the installed themes and MDM login screens.

Many, many thanks to Clem and the team for all the hard work producing LM14 Cinnamon. 😀

  20. Using it right now, works good except for Playonlinux and Crossover. Also, how about some more themes besides mint-x and mint-z. They lack contrast making them difficult to use for some of us older geeks. I prefer Shiki-wise, but other themes are decent too.

Edit by Clem: We love Shiki Wise, but like all good themes (and we’re not blaming the artists here considering GTK3 breaks theme compatibility every 6 months) it doesn’t have GTK3.6 support. Other than Mint-X there are a few themes which make GTK2 and GTK3.6 apps look the same: Radiance/Ambiance, Adwaita and Greybird/Bluebird.

  21. Thanks for this release! The release looks great so far. I hope that this release solves the random lockups i see on all my LM 13 Mate systems.

One thing that is not working, i cannot get skype to install on Cinnamon. Selecting it from the software manager goes into an endless loop, downloading and installing from the skype homepage gives an error and fails. Pity because i really need skype

  22. ok, got in through the back door. had to install fglrx drivers to get through the front door.

    NOW I can See!

Thanks LM Team for all the hard work!

  23. Hi all.
Use Mint since 2008, and actually working with Windows in parallel, I discovered the power of linux.
To date I move to linux, not laying anything missing from another O.S.
I started with Mint, through a magazine, who bought a newsstand.
Flirt with Debian and Ubuntu, but the ease with which the Mint, not what others have, besides benefiting both Ubuntu and Debian.
Currently I have a team that makes me data server with x64, x64 laptop and a desktop with Mate.
A part in the community I live in, I’ve been teaching the linux through Mint, user levels, which once tested, decide not to change the O.S.

  24. Clem,
I have a suggestion for the date and time applet. I do not think the applet is convenient enough. Why can’t I switch between 12 hour and 24 hour formats easily like in Gnome-shell in a click of a button? Please implement built-in time formats to the applet so it is much easier to switch to a different format.

Thank You, and I am loving Nemo.More features==better desktop experience.

  25. Thanks for good news, Clem. I’ll download Mint 14 RC 64bit for Mate & Cinnamon this weekend and try both of them. I’ve been using Mate for several months and it’s rock solid. I had mysterious crashes with the previous version of Cinnamon, so I looking forward to trying the new version.
Again, thanks Clem and team for brining a new release of my favorite Linux distro.

  26. This release finally will be that work and no more BLACK SCREEN on boot?
The last that I can install was Linux Mint 8, since 9 none boot =(

  27. Clem,

It’s about time this got announced, downloaded the ISO days it ago, MATE version looks good.

    Well done as usual.

  28. What would you guys/gals recommend to a long-time Gnome (non-Gnome Shell) and recent XFCE user: MATE or Cinnamon?

    Cheers

    Edit by Clem: MATE.

  29. Firstly works GREAT!
    Good job
guys love MATE & CINNA so much
Please add in the XFCE Dvd LXDE
    & on KDE dvd RAzorQT
    (9mb & 11 mb respectively)

USE old computers in a Charity Home for Children(300pcs)
Very old & no or Limited Connection
LXDE & RazorQT are easy for the children(debatable but they want it)
    Please Listen to our request
We Don’t want you guys to Work harder bcoz you are
    But need help.
And XFCE & LXDE won’t bloat it or require too much

  30. Not sure if this is happening with everyone or not but the GTK theme doesn’t seem to work with Firefox? Here’s a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/Kqum9.png. On the left is Nemo and on the right is Firefox. Maybe it has always been like that and I’m just now noticing it. Anyhow, LM14 is coming along great. Thanks for all of your hard work!

  31. I had a few problems:
    – Scanning from my HP all-in-one doesn’t work in both Simple Scan and with the hplip software
“error: SANE: Error during device I/O (code=9)”
    – I can’t install skype
skype : Depends: ia32-libs but it is not going to be installed

    Otherwise, so far so good.

  32. Thanks Clem! I noticed there’s no easy way to change the Nemo sidebar from black to white, And the advanced options in background cinnamon is not showing properly. Other then that I love it, updated software, sexy new MDM themes (may not even want to use LightDM) and wonderful backgrounds!

  33. Pretty cool the Nemo’s new aspect: I see Cinnamon as your main edtion because the new aspect on it and because it has a modern UI and has modern technologies so is the better and most modern version: I congrats you because that RC and I will test and taste it right now, I have currently downloaded the .iso and I am passing it to my pendrive so to test it 🙂

when the LM 15 released how I will can upgrade my LM 14 Nadia to 15? will you launch an LM version upgrade asistant or something else? or unfortunately sadly and pitifully I will need change the repos; change of version with a fresh instaall or I will stay on the current version?

  34. Thanks a Clem lot for your hard work to the community. I really would suggest changing the default wallpaper to something more interesting (no offense). So many people judge a book by its cover and the wallpaper looks rather bland. Also for the default cinnamon theme why not use the “Minty” theme by satya164. I feel it would reflect the “minty” feel perfectly. Other then that this looks like a fantastic release and can’t wait to try it out!

  35. I downloaded and tested versions of Linux Mint 14 RC Mate and Cinnamon, and I’ve really was pleasantly surprised. The truth that Linux Mint 13 works excellent, but this next version, despite not being LTS, really has an excellent pint. Mate you feel very stable, and Cinnamon, consistency is becoming increasingly visual and is finished improving. Eager for learn and further prove RC versions of Linux Mint 14 KDE and XFCE.- Thanks and Congratulations Linux Mint Team !!!!

  36. How do I install the proprietary AMD video drivers from the software sources for this release? I had grown very accustomed to jockey. Thank you all for an otherwise great release so far.

  37. Okay. Found it. I just wish the “Software Manager” worked. Just like in Maya. It freezes to where the cursor only appears along the top of the box and vanishes everywhere else.

  38. Software Manager can’t seem to install Skype; it hangs when you click on it. Using the CLI reveals the problem:

    $ sudo apt-get install skype
    Reading package lists… Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information… Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
skype : Depends: ia32-libs but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

  39. I downloaded Cinnamon 32bit version and installed it on my pen drive, booted from my pen drive for testing Linux Mint 14 RC Cinnamon 32 bit version….. i see that my CPU is above 50% all the time. Some times i see my CPU going till 100%. Only thing i opened is system monitor. When i see the top CPU consuming processes they are Cinnamon and system monitor.
Anyone else facing the same issue?

One more thing is i dont see “Addition Drivers” application(to install WiFi drivers) installed by default in this version. Is it done with purpose.

Edit by Clem: The drivers are present in “Software Sources”.

  40. I ran into a problem because the “Backup” program present in 12 was not installed by 14, and the “Backup Tool” program in 14 could not read the archives created by backup. 🙁

  41. I installed the cinnamon x64 rc. I love this pre-release. Nearly flawless! I have only been able to find one bug: The Suspend and Hibernate buttons don’t do anything (you know…the buttons that are available after choosing ‘quit’ in the cinnamon menu). Clicking them does nothing at all. If I push the sleep button, it works, but is slow and sometimes glitchy.

Luckily with the terminal commands sudo pm-suspend and pm-hibernate, suspend and hibernate work correctly. I just wish I could figure out how to fix this so I don’t have to open up a terminal to put my computer to sleep. If you can reproduce this problem, please try to fix it.

  42. linuxmint 14 64bit Mate installed on Gateway XS2370-UR30P
desktop. DVD boots and install goes smoothly and nice
crisp display at 1600×900 on AOC 20″ LED monitor.

On reboot, after the install, the screen is blank.
Does not seem to be responsive to keyboard or mouse
    input.

System has 4GB of memory and AMD 64 quad-core processor.

    thanks in advance,

  43. Back to the Gateway SX2370-UR30P.

Upon the third reboot things started working. Go
    figure…..

Some one might want to see if this occurs regularly.

    ciao.

  44. hi , and i make a question, what happens with bumpmaps, i did’nt see the issue no more in github/cinnamon, i know that is cinnamon 1.6 and you promise in 1.8 but don’t see the issue and have a dude, thanks for mint ..

  45. Can I install the RC and just “upgrade” it to the final release (when available), or do I need to reinstall when the final release is here?

    Edit by Clem: Yes.

  46. Hello Clem and team,
Thanks for your hard work on this latest release! Cinnamon 1.6 looks really tempting! Sorry if this is a silly question, but Linux 13 MATE is my first Linux distro and I’m worried that by upgrading I might botch something up due to Noob incompetence…Can I keep the Mint 13 LTS and still be able to use Cinnamon 1.6? Or do I have to upgrade to enjoy Cinnamon 1.6 and Mate 1.4?

Edit by Clem: Cinnamon 1.6 and MATE 1.4 will be backported to Mint 13 (and LMDE).

  47. Thank you for this distro…

The only issue I encountered after installation:
Software manager froze after I changed software sources using its menu. I had to force it to quit.

    Thanks very much again…

  48. @Nick

Cinnamon 1.6 and Mate 1.4 will be backported to Maya 13 so if you have the patience to wait for a bit they will become available along with other improvements.

  49. On behalf of the wider desktop using Linux community –
    Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!!

Cinnamon/Nemo/Mate/MDM etc all rock. Cannot wait for Mint 14 final. 🙂

  50. Been looking forward to this & hoping as previously mint would correct ‘buntu’s bugs however for me same problems..wireless connection slow link speed only 18mb/sec not 54mb/sec+ as in mint 13.using Turion 64×2,ati HD3200, 4gb ram, rtl8192se wireless.Any 1 else got similar prob? ubuntu or 3.5 kernel issue maybe ? currently running mint 13 xfce 32 bit with pae kernel with no other probs apart from normal ati driver issues affecting shutdown. Hope this is corrected before xfce release.

  51. Thanks for the info when KDE Edition will be realeased !

Will it be possible in the near future to port the amazing mint menu to KDE as Kickoff replacement ?
I will be very thankfull for that !!!!

Thanks foor all the work !!!

Edit by Clem: No, mintMenu is a MATE applet.

  52. Installed Mint 14 mate version yesterday and since that I have been made everything I usually make with my computer. Mint mate 13 is very good but this is even better. Everything I need work like a charm and I have not had one single problem at all. This is also very stable and I have to say this seems to be the best Linux mint version ever. And I love mate!

  53. OK good job guys with Linux Mint 14 – but the firewall I don’t know were is the icon and in sound settings go to sound effects is lock that is all and guys I appreciate your hard work with Linux Mint 14 if you were not here we would still be going crazy with windows and all the virus Keep up the good work thanks you have a good day bye.

  54. Hi!

I’ve installed Cinnamon 64bit on a virtualbox-image and configured it with 4 GB memory and 3 CPUs.

    I’ve 2 issues so far:

    1) Cinnamon is using way to much cpu, top is showing 33% cpu-usage.
    2) Cinnamon is very sensitiv regarding the workspace-view, is it possible to do some adjustments with sensitivity, where can I find the settings?

Edit by Clem: We noticed this as well. We recommend to “disable mouse integration” when using Virtualbox.

  55. Good job guys as usual!
One question: when do you plan to change this terrible wallpaper?

Edit by Clem: We don’t 🙂

  56. I don’t see the Full Disk Encryption option that was introduced in Ubuntu 12.10 during installation. Will this be included?

Edit by Clem: Yes and No. It won’t be included by default, but you can enable it all the same. Basically we’re using the same version of the installer we used in Linux Mint 13 (an updated version of Ubiquity 2.10). There is a new version available in the Mint repositories (based on Ubiquity 2.12) which features LVM support, full disk encryption and compatibility with secureBoot. You can upgrade the installer from the liveCD prior to the installation to gain access to these new features. We used the older version of Ubiquity because we weren’t fully happy with the stability of the new installer and how late some of these new features got in Ubiquity.

  57. Cinnamon 64 bit edition: Skype doesn’t download. Tried from the package manager, tried downloading the .deb package directly from skype. It says there is a dependancy that can’t be downloaded. Otherwise no problems so far.

  58. Hi. There is an issue with both the themes, viz Mint Z and Mint X. The exact UI for the theme cannot be seen in most of the applications. Example, click on the network icon in the task bar and u will see grayish window, as though the default theme failed to load for that window. Secondly window manager has another issue. This was seen in Maya as well. While minimizing the window, only a black border of the window is seen being minimized, and not the complete window (looks bit ugly).this wasn’t observed till Lisa. This started with Maya and now in Nadia. Issue is with Mate desktop, the one that i’m running. Rest, Nadia works like a charm 🙂

  59. I had a GUI freeze on the Cinnamon version. I was compiling LO in the background and I plugged in a USB hub that has a keyboard and a wireless mouse attached to it. The GUI froze, including the mouse cursor, and I couldn’t ctrl-alt-Fx to another terminal. I’m looking at the X logs and I don’t see anything interesting in there.

  60. Not really sure if its a bug, but I can’t resize or maximize the installer window (e.g. partitioning prior to installation). The small window is awkward to handle and requires scrolling through the partition list since there can only be three visible at a time. It would be much better if one could just maximize or resize it, which gives a better overview over the options and feels less crammed together.

  61. Richard@47

Clem gave you the most practical answer for your history, and MATE will definitely make you feel the most at home.

But I must say that Clem discredits himself just a little on his work with Cinnamon. In other words, if you installed LM14-MATE on the primary PC and spun up a Cinnamon VB and gave it a fair go, you just might find yourself jumping ship. This is not at all contrary to the answer Clem gave you. That was the best practical answer all things considered. But I just feel that the line is getting finer and finer by the minute, and I mean that in the most positive way. No, Cinnamon and MATE are not the same, but man are they both really good and usable, assuming that major hardware issues aren’t presented with one as opposed to the other.

Bottom line, is that if I had to fault Clem and his team for anything at all, it would be that our decision (MATE or Cinnamon) is becoming more and more difficult everyday. But this is because he has worked hard on giving us–not just choices for the sake of choices–but quality choices that actually work very well. And in my experience with Mint, some how or another, things will just get way better, if you can believe that.

All that said, thanks Clem for your hard work.

  62. To Awilu and any others having trouble with ia32-lib. The issue also exists in quantal. the solution is to add the 386 architecture :-

    sudo dpkg –add-architecture i386
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

Edit by Clem: Confirmed. This is the recommended fix. It creates a /var/lib/dpkg/arch file containing amd64 and i386.

  63. Hi

There is a new Israelian mirror server since 03/10/2012 – http://mirror.isoc.org.il/pub/mint/

I have noticed that it is not on the linuxmint website mirror list – why?

    thanks

Edit by Clem: There are many unofficial mirrors with Linux Mint ISOs. For a mirror to be added to the list the mirror staff usually gets in touch with us to confirm they’re able to sync successfully and at an acceptable frequency.

  64. 1) dropbox problem ,I use windows7 and mint 13 maya mate together and allocate D: drive for repository drive by ntfs file system ,but on this version nadia ,it doesn;t mount D: drive

so I will wait for stable version of Nadia ^_^

but, wallpapers are awesome and, new icons, more colorful and cute^^
I’m still waiting for you Nadia~~~

  65. Can’t seem to get cinnamon 14 64-bit to work with vmware 5.0.2 on mac os lion w/ retina. It constantly crash midway through booting. Anyone having the same problem and if so, any suggestion to get around it. Thanks.

  66. Thank you for a great release. Am running the Cinnamon release as Live right now. But finally a release that actually loaded without having to use nomodeset.

Everything works great, except when first loading a movie in vlc, the sound goes all scratchy. But clears up after a couple seconds. Same with playing music. Scratchy at first, but clears up.

Looks like I might be finally coming back to Mint. Thank you again Clem and devs. A wonderful release after so long!

  67. Found a minor bug while trying to install nemo-compare.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    nemo-compare : Depends: python-nemo (>= 1.0) but it is not installable

Thank you Clem and everyone! Looking forward to the upcoming release.

  68. Cinnamon is looking better, but not getting any easier to configure the panel, and still no weather applet. I will stick with Mate. Had to leave the LMDE edition because of no support for my ATI HD4200 video GPU after UP5. I love linux, but sometimes it is damn frustrating adjusting every time a new update pack or release comes out. Also, printer setup and flash plugin in LMDE still don’t work properly.

  69. Thanks a $1.000.000 for the ia32-libs / skype fix!! Worked like a charm and i now at least have a system i can work with.

  70. ” There is a new version available in the Mint repositories (based on Ubiquity 2.12) which features LVM support, full disk encryption and compatibility with secureBoot”

    Excellent!

  71. Can anyone confirm that on MATE edition that Totem/VLC/ or any movie player that if mate-screensaver is set to enable or power-save mode is set for sleep after 10 seconds that the screen will go to screensaver or blank while a movie is playing??

  72. Please keep maintaining LXDE: I use it as base OS on my desktop and in addition I have a several virtual clients for every customer/project on top of it. So it is important having a not draining resources platform !
Here is not matter of using “old computers”, but multiple machines using reasonably resources.

  73. Hi! Just tried running the LM 14 installation media on my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E525, but it freezes if I choose the default boot option. If I start in compatibility mode, it starts fine and everything works (mouse moves, etc.) except the screen is scrambled (both in graphical mode and tty). I tried booting using the nomodeset option, but it freezes.

  74. Congratulations on a great Release Candidate, the MATE version is shaping up as a great improvement over the LM13 release, installed on an 8GB USBkey, which seems to down to a slicker kernel plus drivers, but CPU Frequency Scaling and Control also works so I don’t have to add AWN. Mint10 was an improvement on Mint9 and this release is giving similar ‘good vibes’ so I think that I will be returning to Linux Mint. Create Launcher provided a desktop icon for gufw, whilst I have been able to add all my favourites, including Handbrake as extracted from Pinguy so I’m well pleased. After creating a backup image, I’ll probably try adding Cinnamon for an LMDE-like, but more capable experience.

  75. Hi just installed LM14-Mate 64 and ran into a problem: external USB drives get now mounted on /media/user/sda5 or so. I know that this is a new feature, read this some days ago, dont find it anymore.
The problem is that I have tons of links in Libreoffice calc pointing to files in /medis/sda5/… which now no longer work. Changing all the links is a nighmare, every single link has to be changed manually.
Is there a way to change the configuration of LM so that drives get mounted the old way?

  76. Great work!! but we need a new beautiful splash screen in the stable release!! I suggest that you design a green one specially for Nadia!! It deserves the splash effect Sir Clem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  78. Thanks a lot for this great release…. running 64bit cinnamon version from live cd and everything seems stable.

one issue though, cinnamon is using a lot of cpu.
i have an intel i5-2500K (4 cores) and top shows that cinnamon is using 40% (sometimes much more, never below 10%).

  79. Some things I’m seeing in Cinnamon 1.6.6 (as updated from LM13)

    Bugs?

-nvidia settings no longer sees my two displays (to be completely fair, I’m not actually sure when that happened) error says: nvidia driver is not new enough to display nvidia page.

-checking display settings system settings, only shows 1 display at a resolution of 2560X1024. Actually have 2 19″ 4:3 monitors capable of 1280X1024 each.

-Still having a problem getting extra applets installed to show on panel.

-have paranoid list theme installed after changing GDM file names to MDM. Not very user friendly on that front, but not a native MDM theme either I guess.

-can’t seem to set the user picture on login screen. only displays the default face from MDM settings.

-desktop icons still not loading every time without having to launch Nemo.

-trash bin icon almost never shows on home PC, even though all other icons might.

    Improvements:

-love the improved panel settings, icon sizes, scaling, etc.

-nemo looks really good. on that note, can anyone confirm that it is okay for me to remove nautilus altogether?

-while i’m interested to check out MATE as well, Cinnamon just looks more polished, even though configuration may not always be as straight forward as MATE.

looking forward to more upgrades. Thanks Clem.

  80. Just tried to install both mate and cinnamon but when i had rebooted it said something about the x server not set up, and i am new to linux, so i have no idea what to do

  81. Two problems here that have been around since at least LM13:

    1. Printer settings such as page size etc. are not accessible via the Printer settings dialogue. This is a serious issue, and I’d like to urge you to fix this as soon as possible.

    2. On Cinnamon, screen brightness on my Acer 1810TZ can be adjusted only in two increments at a time. Mate handles this perfectly. Not a showstopper, but definitely annoying. Would love to see a fix for this.

  82. Marcus Moeller (#94): I am not sure if blog comments are a good method to track bugs

That is indeed another issue that I would urge to get on top of post haste. I know there is an official bugtracker, but having to register is just enough hassle to put most users off—and then posting a bug that never get assigned, much less responded to, means you’ll never do it again. (Which is my experience.)

A dedicated blog post with one-level nested comments might work, if it is properly moderated, i.e. info properly gathered and bug reports properly addressed (will look into, will fix, low priority, etc.).

  83. Aelfinn@111

I guess the printer settings issue you are talking about is within Cinnamon? I went round and round about that right when Gnome Shell hit the fan, and it stinks. To make matters worse, you can’t point a printer to a .ppd file if you had too. I know longer have a printer that requires me to point to a .ppd file, but it still isn’t right.

But below is the link to your CUPS Web interface that will allow you to make all those changes. It’s nowhere near as nice and simple as the old printer settings utility we were used to (which incidentally seems to be still in the Ubuntu/Unity desktop) but it works, and I think you will be able to dig up the settings you want to configure. Just open up a web browser, and paste that in. You might want to bookmark it if you like to tweak things. I will admit that another user gave that suggestion to me when I first recognized the absence of a decent printer settings utility, and I didn’t like it then, so I understand completely if you turn your nose up at it. Hope it helps

  84. also, somebody might actually know of a gnome component that gives us that back, like for setting up users. That went in the crapper too, but gnome-system-tools can still be installed and that will give back the old user control that was nice and easy, and gave us lots of control.

  85. I am having issues with the GUI lockup on Software Manager. e.g When I double-click an application, the mouse icon spins and Software Manager just sits there doing nothing.

  86. Wow so nice. Just upgraded my daily desktop from 13 LMDE to 14 RC.
I found out a DVD install of Cinnamon then install mate works best. The other way, Cinnamon installed last had menu problems. (Prob my fault).

Looks really nice, only bug (prob my fault again) playing with the effects on maximize it locked the desktop. I’ll keep playing and if its a bug, I’ll report it. But really enjoying Mate with clearlooks-phenix-master (gtk2/gtk3) themes. I just need to do a few tweaks to get gtk3 apps looking good, and its golden. (Oh and skype issues)

  87. Great job again! This time I will try Cinnamon 1.6, since in Maya I used Mate 1.4. Happy to meet a new environment. See what you give us.

BTY, Mint main page can be a little more official and beautiful. See Fedora’s main page. This will make mint more popular and draw more attention which I guarantee you.
    谢谢!

  88. Running 14 RC 64 bit Cinnamon from a stick, have a 1024×768 screen, AMD motherboard builtin graphics, I believe the framebuffer device is in play, noticed that dropdown controls with a huge list don’t seem to be displaying quite right, for example if I click on the date on the panel, then Date and Time settings, then City, the bottom scroll arrow does not display, but if I click away (closing it) and try again, the bottom scroll arrow does display and I can scroll down. It continues to work until Cinnamon Settings – Calendar dialog is closed.

Setting Auto-Hide on doesn’t change the behavior.

    HTH

  89. Have both MATE and Cinnamon 64 bit versions installed. I have a few issues with Cinnamon: I can’t get “suspend” to work altho it did on 13 and I need Wine but it seems to be broken.

Other than those I’ve had no issues – I just like Cinnamon best. The developers, all of them, deserve an “atta boy”! KUTGW!!!

  90. I am mostly an Arch user, but I really enjoy the work of Mint, specially some of the consequences of its focus on the user (Cinnamon, Nemo, etc) and I hop into it regularly to check how it is going.

I am still not in level to contribute, but I’d really like to emphasize the need of a faster Software Manager. I know some of it is due to the extreme slowness of apt, but the interface itself behaves badly, at least as of Mint 13.

It’s unlikely the devteam will read this, but please, take a look on that. Continue making Mint an awesome alternative.

  91. Mint13’s added ‘nvidia-current’ version 295 imposed difficult to read condensed fonts upon StartUp, but it did include an Overscan Correction ‘wot worked’ when driving large screen Smart TVs at less than native resolution, so useful for the visually-impaired.
LM14’s added ‘nvidia-current’ default version has lost the condensed fonts at the expense of Overscan Correction whilst the repository team seem to be experimenting with even worse set of drivers. Reinstating links to version 295 would be helpful if that’s possible.

Meanwhile DeVeDe cannot now be added, lacking needed dependency links – crazy.
Otherwise Mint14’s still looking better than Mint13, so well done team !

Oh, and please ignore pleas to revert to the bureaucratic use of Launchpad to handle reported bugs as the LinuxMint Comments approach is yielding better and far more obvious results !

  92. file-roller knows nautilus as file manager, and when it tries to open it an error message is displayed that nautilus isn’t found

  93. Using cinnamon, and setting to show on desktop the files in the desktop folder, they are shown, but after a while they disappear and I’m left with a blue desktop.

  94. Installed it yesterday, and it works like a charm! Great job!

Trying to install Skype, and realized ‘dpkg –add-architecture i386’ isn’t set by default (Believe it was in 13)
I did have some trouble setting the language to Afrikaans (Couldn’t set it in the installer), but after the 3rd restart it worked (So it might just have been me)
I realized the terminal font changed, and personally liked the settings on 13 (Not sure what they where)

Thats my 2c… Hope it helps!

  95. Mint Mate 14RC doesn’t boot on a Pentium M Cpu:

This kernel requires the following feature not present on the CPU: pae

At least update the System requirements:

x86 processor (Linux Mint 64-bit requires a 64-bit processor. Linux Mint 32-bit works on both 32-bit and 64-bit processors).

  96. Clem, thanks for your great work! I really experience many stability improvements on LM14 Cinnamon 64bit. It looks solid!

I have only noticed that cpu frequency is higher on Mint14 in comparison to Mint13, that’s why my fan makes more noise. I have tried to set cpu frequency to the lowest value. It did not help much. This issue also causes higher battery consumption. Please let me know if any help is needed. Thanks!

  97. Trying to install this rc on a ssd, ubiquity cannot end the installation process, it stops saying it couldn’t migrate the data.

I had to install it with

    ubiquity –no-migration-assistant

  98. hi together,

    I have a terible problem with my WLAN-chip in LinuxMint 14 (rt3090).

That means: I can see my network, but I can’t connect to it (connection fails permanently). This did not happen for me in LinuxMint 13 maya.

Here is the output of lsmod | grep rt:

    So can anybody help here?

  100. Hello!
    Is the cups working properly?
Ubuntu Quetzal has serious issues with wide range of printers. Since LM 14 is based upon it, it would be necessary to make sure the errors will not be repeated.

Another question: will it be soon a rolling KDE release for Linux Mint?

  101. 1) Look at the picture http://i.imgur.com/hDdsB.png
Both MATE and Cinnamon editions have this little issue since, at least, LM 13 release. Yeah, it’s just one missing pixel, but I can clearly see it, and it’s annoying. BTW, LM 13 Xfce has all the pixels at their places.

    2) In MATE edition, backlight on my ASUS 1005PXD netbook even set on maximum is too low. And again, LM 13 also has this issue (backlight in Cinnamon is fine).

Good luck, LM Team, and I hope LM 14 Release will be fantastic)

  102. A minor bug (or feature?):
I added four users and chose 3 of them can log in without passwd. Anyway, the password is required. Fixing this would help my kids to use Linux Mint…

    Looks brilliant anyway!

  103. OK, here some more information for you:

  104. In the 32-bit MATE release, Firefox likes to crash for no apparent reason, at least in the live CD mode (I didn’t install it).

  105. Also, I had X misbehave (on NVidia card) – windows tearing, leaving artifacts on the desktop and other windows. Also in the Live CD mode, no installation.

  107. Mucho Love for Linux Mint….I’ve held tight with Isadora, however I am currently downloading Nadia 64bit cinnamon and I’m excited about trying this out. The new features look great and I want to grow with Mint. Big fan of this OS. Thanks Clem for knocking another homerun!

  108. I don’t like the “new” old Gedit in this release.

How to install normal gedit 3 ?

Edit by Clem: apt install gedit/quantal

  109. Its not possible to install sp-auth / sopcast-player on Mint 14 RC 64bits.

ht***://handytutorial.com/install-sopcast-player-in-ubuntu-12-10-12-04/<—this work on Linux Mint 13 but not on 14….Can anybody help??

    Thanks in advance.

  110. I tried to install this via usb and got nothing but a black screen and blinking cursor on startup.I installed it twice with the same result and went back to mint 13.I’ll wait for the final build.

  111. Will the live CD seamlessly support uefi when I installed LM13 I had to copy the bootX64.efi into the EFI System Partion (yes I know thats dangerous) to get LM13 to boot into UEFI mode and have a quicker install than bios mode booting.

  112. I’ve been running Linux Mint 14 RC for a few days now and I’m impressed. Everything is running flawlessly. Congratulations to the LM team on a job well done (again). Love you all!

  113. I have problem installing Linux Mint 14(Nadia) RC X64 Cinnamon on my system.

I installed like/same settings as Mint 13(Maya) X64 Cinnamon for install allogsite with Windows X64 Ultimate/dual boot.

The installation seemed to finish with no problem but then on first boot at restart no menu of dual booting and grub rescue screen.

Setup with two HDDs one(1) partition on first HDD(Sata2 internal) with only Windows 7 X64 Ultimate(NTFS) and on second HDD(Esata/sata1 external) with two(2) partitions one for Linux Mint(unformatted->ext4+swap) and another one partition for data only(NTFS).

Hope to have no problems in stable version. The improvement on 14(Nadia)sounds aweshome! Congrats!

    Waiting for stable with excitement!

Running back to Mint 13 now.

  114. Hi people,

I am still struggling with WLAN in linuxMint 14 Nadja. It still does not work although I read a lot of things about that on the Internet.

But: I got mobile Broadband to work. But this is no solution or even replacement for WLAN. So does anybody know, how to fix this? Because all tipps at ubuntuusers did not work at all or even the ones on askubuntu. So I am really looking for an answer.

    Greetings

  115. BUGS FOUND: I just tried the live CD for 64-bit MATE and Cinnamon.

Cinnamon – Gedit 3 doesn’t have the embedded terminal in the gedit-plugins package, even though it’s listed in the description. On Mint 13, the terminal was present, but there was a bug where the coloring didn’t match with gnome-terminal’s profiles like in older versions.

MATE – pluma doesn’t have any of the plugins ported that were in the gedit 2 repositories, such as the embedded terminal

People may call me crazy, but I’m a heavy/power user of gedit/mate, so these have been somewhat of deal breakers for me to upgrading beyond Mint 11 which I use now since it has good old gedit2. Frankly, the direction GNOME has taken forcing MATE to branch has caused me a lot of pain and heartache lately concerning linux.

I miss the good old Ubuntu 10.10 and Linux Mint 11 days, where everything was pretty much almost perfect, but the changes by GNOME have stripped features, messed with my ability to use Compiz, and left my gedit plugin development in limbo. I don’t know weather to port my plugins to pluma, rewrite them for gedit 3, or both (which is kinda what I’ve been doing). I have yet to make the plunge from gedit 2 other than in VMs.

Even ignoring the argument between the classical desktop metaphor and the new one, I’m finally seeing linux get some of it’s customization back to the GNOME world, but still not to levels of 2010. And for a while the themes were atrocious (Just an X button, and it was big and ugly. Emerald gave me more power over window decoration.).

Help me Mint Kenobi, you’re my only hope! 🙂

Thank you so much for your work with MATE and GNOME to try and bring back the best we’ve lost.

Edited by Mint Kenobi: I’ve got bad news. The shellification of Gedit is still ongoing but the situation is different than the one with Nautilus. Caja and Nemo are actively developed. There is no plan for Cinnamon to develop its own text editor (not at the moment anyway) and MATE is interested in replacing Pluma with anything that “works” (that excludes gedit 3 of course). MATE and Mint started a discussion with the developers of Geany about something called Geany-lite, and in the meantime we simply adopted Gedit 2.30, which works great for casual users, in Mint 14. If you want to do more with your text editor, I would recommend the excellent Geany. Not only does it work very well, it’s full of features and it’s completely independent.

Sorry you are having so much trouble connecting to Wifi. But you did say that you can connect to mobile broadband? Are you using a USB air card plugged into the PC or are you connecting to a hotspot wirelessly?

If you are connecting to a hotspot wirelessly, then you need to look somewhere else for your problem, like your router. Just a thought.

  117. Excellent Work! Mate is looking polished with a very solid feel. I’ve been using Mint as my main work computer for over a year now and I could not be happier with this new release.

  118. The only issue is, so far, Ubuntu One. I’ve installed the client, and it doesn’t show up on the menu. I’ve gone into Gnome Classic to alt+f2, no dice. If it’s the problem with 32-bit, I’ve run the fix, but still nothing. It won’t run in terminal- says that it doesn’t exist, but when I try to re-install it, the output reads that I already have it. This is a major issue for me, as I have important stuff in my Ubuntu One file. Any solutions to this?

  119. Love to try this out on my main laptop. Unfortunately while booting m14 RC from a live usb I can only see artifacts and not make it to the desktop. I know from Ubuntu that it will with the nvidia drivers and not with the default nouveau drivers (using Nvidia Gforce GTS 360M with the GT215 chipset). Will try it on virtualbox…

  120. Just booted the RC on my main laptop with nvidia card. As I thought this is a driver issue. While blacklisting the nouveau driver I got into the desktop where I can install nvidia’s drivers. (At startup on the list with options press Tab and then enter nouveau.blacklist=1 at the end of the vmlinuz line)

  121. hi people,

I found my way back to working WLAN!! Yep, two things made my blocking: first thing was: I should not blacklist rt2800pci (this has to be dropped from blacklist) and the second thing was:

The WLAN-key here at home had been changed and I had a wrong key!! This blocked me from WLAN!! But: now it works!!! So I can come back to say: LinuxMint 14 will become good!!

    Greetings
    Mintkatze

  122. So, that bricked my machine.

Downloaded the 64-bit MATE version, confirmed the MD5, stuck it on a flash drive using UNetBootin, booted up.

Live image worked perfectly, all devices driven, ran the installer.

Rebooted, booting off the HDD just gave me: error – unknown file system. Was dumped to the grub rescue prompt but couldn’t get that to do anything useful either, so I had to rewrite my MBR using my Windows 7 disc.

    System: Intel i3, 8GB RAM, 2GB NVidia GT440.

    Not overly impressed.

  123. I am trying to add a printer via IP address in Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon RC.

When I try to add a printer via the Add Printer Tool, I get a message saying

    Code: Select all
FirewallD is not running. Network printer detection needs services mdns, ipp, ipp-client, and samba-client enabled on firewall.

How do I add a printer via IP address? Thank you

  124. I noticed that the latest update for mint-themes (version 1.1.4) killed the Mint-Z theme. It is just an empty directory (/usr/share/themes.

Edit by Clem: Hi Paul. I can confirm that mint-z was discontinued. Supporting GTK3 is a recurring maintenance headache which strikes us every 6 months. We spent a lot of time on Mint-X and got acceptable results (i.e. GTK3 apps looking native) but we weren’t able to give Mint-Z as much attention, so rather than shipping with something incomplete, we’re removing it before the stable release. Unless GTK3 stabilize their theme API and artist take the risk to support it, or unless we ditch all GTK3 apps from Linux Mint, we won’t ship with multiple themes… for an application looking different depending on the API it uses is considered a bug here.

  125. I like the Nadia, by high CPU usage prevents me from using it. Cinnamon runs a minimum 35% CPU. Maya is fine with same setup. Anyone else experiencing this?

  126. I installed Linux Mint 14 MATE 64bit on my laptop. I dont see jockey-gtk installed by default so installed it from Software sources, even after that if i type the command “jocket-gtk” it still says jockey-gtk is not installed.
In Linuxmint 13 MATE 64bit my Wifi was working without any issues and “Additional Drivers” was installed by default with the OS… but i dont know why it was removed in Linux Mint 14.
Does anyone know how to make WiFi working in Linux Mint 14?

  127. Trying to install 32-bit Mint 14 RC Cinnamon on a Toshiba laptop with Celeron M CPU and ATI Radeon X-200M display, over existing Mint 13 partition. Near the end, screen shows “copying installation log files”. This seems to last forever, the orb keeps swirling around even though the horizontal bar is solid green. I removed the DVD in frustration, then reboot.

    Error 15: file not found!

    Any idea or suggestions?

    Thank you!

  128. I upgraded my laptop unsuccessfully, but installed happily from the DVD to correct it. One of the issues I ran into here was one I ran into in v12 as well. I like several extensions and two panels.
I particularly like the ‘void’ panels BTW. The problem I run into is getting extension/applets to be added properly to the panels.
I like the monitoring and weather applets, but they are fairly large. I’ve had to install gconf-edit in the past to manually edit the settings. I’m having a harder time with the newer version this time around.
    — Q1) how do I reset my desktop settings back to raw-defaults so I can try the panels again.
    — Q2) Any pointers in adding the monitoring to the 2nd panel manually (gconf-edit)?

    thanx much

  129. I wanted to comment to Nathaniel, who commented above about Suspend not working, and tell him that I am having the same issue.

Suspend works with a command but not on the start menu; it does nothing.

    You aren’t the only one.

  130. for 159

    74.
Edit by Clem: Cinnamon 1.6 and MATE 1.4 will be backported to Mint 13 (and LMDE).

the single open question is when? december?!

  131. I installed the RC on a late 2007 Imac and 7,1 macbook pro and it is running very smoothly on both machines…

I noticed one small glitch: I use a French system but the cinnamon entry is not translated in the menu (“Cinnamon settings” should be “Paramètres Cinnamon” or something like that). It stands out a bit since it is in the favorites by default.

Thanks for this great distribution. Keep up the good work.

Edit by Clem: fr or fr_CA? These are different locales and fr_CA is still missing a lot of translations at https://translations.launchpad.net/linuxmint/isadora

  132. Hello, great work as always – but I have an issue regarding internet connections which is identical to Ubuntu 12.10: I use a T-Mobile broadband dongle for my internet connection and each time I have tried to connect, I am greeted with a notifications which keeps telling me I am “Disconnected From Modem Network”. Is there any chance of a fix for this?

Note: Error present on HP Pavilion G6 Laptop and Advent 4213 Netbook using a variety of Huawei dongles – Error present on Nadia Cinnamon 32-bit. If there is anything I’m missing, I apologise for being a little dense – but I use Mint for work and cannot afford to be left without a connection. Though I mainly use Maya and have no problems with it.

    Thanks again ^_^b

  133. > Edit by Clem: fr or fr_CA? These are different locales and fr_CA is still missing a lot of translations

    I’m using fr_FR.

  134. I’m currently running Ubuntu with the fallback desktop, and am considering moving to Mint. Since Mint is based on Ubuntu, is there a way to “upgrade” Ubuntu to Mint without all the pain of a from-scratch installation?

  135. Clem, as per my comment above, I’d like to urge you again to look into the missing printer settings in Cinnamon.

It would be very nice to at least hear from management what your options are—not fixable, might look into, fix in the works. Something like that.

Which highlights a point I made in another comment above: Your responses to bug reports here seem rather selective. It would be good to see a more stringently moderated thread for bug reports where all reporters get timely feedback on their issues and don’t get frustrated when they’re trying to help but are essentially ignored. (As I said, a thread with one level of nested comments might just do the trick, provided there is good feedback.)

Edit by Clem: All reports are “read” in an attempt to “fix” as many of them as possible. The reason we encourage you to use this blog rather than LP is precisely so we can focus on fixing them without triaging them. I know it’s frustrating when help isn’t acknowledged. Don’t read ignorance when that happens, we’re short on resources and trying to focus as much as we can. This is the most demanding couple of days in our whole release cycle so we read quickly, test quickly, fix quickly or dismiss quickly. Everything helps though whether we reply or not, we do appreciate the help.

  136. Installed Mint 14 RC Mate with no issues. Once installed I noticed:

    1) MDM username field did not show any typed characters on first use.

    2) MDM would intermittently disappear after Nvidia drivers installed (previously reported issue). I installed LightDM as workaround.

    3) Pop up notifications always show in the upper right even when I move them using the notifications settings GUI.

Overall, very responsive and polished looking (font rendering is Ubuntu-crystal clear). Memory usage is a bit high though performance is excellent. Great job Clem and Mint team.

  137. Thanks for this terrific RC. I’m using the 64-bit version. Very close to perfect on my computer. Really beautiful, smooth and quick. I have one problem, though. No matter what I do in the ordinary way to change font size settings, I can’t enlarge the font on the menu. Changing to a darker theme with white lettering did help, but it’s still not comfortable to read. I originally had the same problem with Synaptic font size, but somehow it has adjusted and is fine now. Every place else is fine.

I would be thankful if someone would save me from more wrinkles around my eyes and tell me how to enlarge the menu font.

    Thank you and congratulations.

  138. OK the 32 bit fix allowed Wine to load and run! Thanks for the workaround.

I can get the machine to sleep by selecting ‘lock screen’ from the menu or by just letting it sit until the blank screen timer runs out. But it will not sleep by choosing it from the shutdown menu.

But all in all I’m having fun and no other issues with Cinnamon. Again, thanks for all the hard work.

  139. Can not log into the Cinnamon desktop after logging off, every time I try it goes back to the log in page. I can log into Gnome Classic. I have tried removing .cinnamon from my /home/user/ but this did not help.

    Thanks

  140. Hi Clem,
First I would like to say thank you for this latest RC, I have it installed on my laptop (dual boot vista) and on home pc (another dual boot vista) everything went well and I am over the moon with it, but i have a little niggle that I thought best to share.
    Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop with
    0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
To get this to work I had to run :-
    sudo apt-get install –reinstall bcmwl-kernel-source
    and then
    sudo modprobe wl

Everything works fine, BUT (you knew there would be one right?) it gets lost on reboot.
This isn’t huge problem, as I just created wifi.sh containing code below, made it executable and run it after boot (from console as it requires root).
    (wifi.sh)
    #!/bin/bash
    sudo modprobe wl
    exit
    ——-
This all works fine, but I would love to sort my (so far) ONLY problem and have it come on automatically.

Many Thanks for the hard work you guys are putting in to bring us this GREAT distro! and I am only an inch (damn iPhone) from ditching windows completely.

    Dai

  141. Congratulations. A superb distro again. Cinnamon may by good, but it’s confusing, at least for me. So I stick happily with Mate. I love it.
    Thanks team.

  142. Maybe someone can help me out. The last 2 versions that I tried to install using mint4win inside of Windows 7 on my 64-bit HP worked…
BUT it simply installed the live cd user version onto my computer.
Yes, it did work, but the install Mint Icon was on the top left of
the desktop both times. What is going on? I have used mint4win and
ran Linux Mint as a dual-boot for several versions now.
    Thanks!
    Stanton…

Edit by Clem: That’s the first step, it installs the content of the ISO onto the HDD. Run the installer from within Mint and it replace the content of the ISO with an installed OS (choose /dev/loopX for both grub and your partition).

  143. @Adelante-194 : Open Cinnamon Settings, fonts, and increase the the ‘text scaling factor’ from 1.0 to whatever suits you, just experiment with it. It will increase the cinnamon menu fonts. But don’nt increase the font size individually. And also Be prepared to have the fonts size bigger at many places.

  144. I see my post disappeared, not sure why though. 🙁
but my problem is fixed and i was going to post how…
    no point now i guess…..

    Dejected Dai

  145. BUGS FOUND:

    Hi all I have found some bugs on the already installed system;

1.- I have been installed liferea and next I have opened it and it is on English; it is not on Spanish as it should be because I have installed my Linux Mint in Spanish and I have all the Gnome and Linux mint Spanish language packs so it must be on Spanish too

2.- I have installed Zsnes and it do not works properly; when I modify the window size on the video settings when I accept the new resolution for the window the emulator crashes; this bug is not from the emulator because before Linux mint I had Kubuntu 12.10 so is a problem of LM 14

well there are my reported bugs so I realy hope you can fix them; congratulations for your new release and I and I kept saying to you please create a version upgrader to upgrade my system to the next Linux mint 15 please; I whant not remove my actual installation because is BEUTIFULL

  146. Tried apt-get –purge remove cinnamon
Then reinstalled. Still cannot log onto the cinnamon desktop, I get a black screen w/ cursor then it beeps and puts me back to the login screen. This includes cinnamon 2d as well.
    gnome classic still working

I don’t know if you recall my comment, but you can get to the CUPS web interface and change those settings. However, I think I found what you are looking for, and it is already installed. As I haven’t found a launcher for it yet in the menu system, I had to create one. Follow the steps listed below, I think they’ll get what you want, they did for me:

    1. Right-click on the Menu button and select edit.

    2. When the Menu window opens, you are going to want to add an entry for the system-config-printer command. So in the Application column, select where you want the entry to appear. I chose System Tools.

    3. Then click on the “New Item” button toward the top right hand pane.

    4. When the “New Item” window appears, simply name the entry what ever you’d like. I named mine “Printer Setup.”

    5. In the “command:” field, enter the following line:

    gksu system-config-printer

    6. Click “OK,” and you’re done. You will see that entry listed where ever you chose to put it. Once you launch the utility, I think you will find that it is what you’ve been looking for, as have I. The printer configuration tool that is found in System Settings is an absolute joke, so I feel your pain.

I will say that there are some Ubuntu users who have experienced some bugs with finding network printers with this tool, but I haven’t run into them yet.

If you want to get fancy with it, you can go back to the Menu editing window, select the new entry, click on properties, click on the icon, and browse to the path below, and use that icon for your menu entry–looks a little more legit that way. Anyway, hope this helps, and if anybody knows of a more obvious way to find this printer control panel, please chime in.

  149. Hi
Have anyone problems with empathy messenger and ICQ accont add? When I install account-plugin-icq list of FB,G and other accont disappear… And i can’t use empathy messenger….
    Thanks

  150. Odd one with Dropbox. I use a separate partition (NTFS / D:) for Dropbox storage. When installing Dropbox on Linux Mint 14 RC – using an advanced install – and guiding Dropbox to where that partition is, it ignores this and reverts back to /home/[username]/dropbox????

    Anyone else?

  151. I started mintinstall and I tried to install a package. It looked like it wanted to install it but after it displayed 0% it acted like nothing happened and the Install button was still active, because it wasn’t installed. Then I noticed I wasn’t connected to the internet.

The issue is: no feedback at all if mintinstall doesn’t have internet access.

  152. Hi all.
I have noticed that Cinnamon Settings -> Fonts doesn’t change font size in some applications, for example: GIMP, Libre Office, Pidgin or Banshee.

  153. The “Failed to unmount partitions” window appears and never goes away. Clicking the Go Back or Continue buttons makes the button highlight normally, but nothing ever happens. The install is stuck.

To reproduce: boot the live iso (I’m using USB). Mount some partitions to see what’s on them. Forget to unmount them before launching the install process. You can enter the partition info but now the install is wedged.

Interestingly, this error alert is resizable but the partition info window is not. It would be awesome if the partition info window were resizable too — looking at all these partitions through a tiny slit is not so easy.

  154. I had the screen turn pink and the mouse cursor not moving 🙁
I don’t see anything in .xsession-errors or . The last lines in kern.log and syslog are related to the wifi (cfg80211). But I don’t see anything that would give me problems with X

  155. Mint 14 Video Choppy in full screen

I have a Satellite L355-S7915 Toshiba laptop. The video worked amazingly well in Mint 13. When I installed Mint 14 ( and while testing from the RC live USB), I noticed the video was very very choppy in full screen mode with VLC and Movie Player. When I installed it on my desktop computer I do not get these issues at all so apparently it is only with certain video. I will get you the only specs I can find for my video to assist anyone that can help with this question.

    Intel Celeron CPU 900 @ 2.20 GhZ
    3 gig ram
    Video 1440 x 900 pixels
Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x301)
    X11 Vendor the X.org Foundation

Hope these specs are of some assistance. again the video is only choppy and stuttered in full screen mode.

  156. dd at 183 – re Handbrake extraction from Pinguy.
First note that I only use 32bit versions because they are better for USBkey installation, but after installing Pinguy12.04, remove Handbrake, add aptoncd, then add back Handbrake and run aptoncd to create a CD with the requisite DEB files which have so far worked with other Ubuntu12.04 and Ubuntu 12.10 dervived distros. It’s a bit long-winded but you can then retain the DEB files for re-use.
Hope that answers your question and helps.

  157. Fixed update issue, I accidentally typed sudo dpkg –add-architecture 1386 instead of sudo dpkg –add-architecture i386. Still can not log into Cinnamon Desktop, only gnome classic is working. Thanks

Edit by Clem: Make sure you updated all cinnamon and *muffin* packages.

  158. Hi Clem. Thanks for replying but I do not understand why mint4win installed inside of Windows is now a 2 step process. I used mint4win all the way up to version 12. Now with 13 and 14 it is a 2 step process? When I run mint4win inside Windows it asks me the size of the partition, the password, the name of the User and then boots into Linux and none of that is there. The Live User Account is there, along with the Install Mint Icon. I guess if I then click the install mint now icon, It will prompt me to partition and resize the HDD and then reboot again? As I said earlier, up thru LM 12, nothing was partitioned, moved, resized, etc… It simply installed one time from Windows and ran on a Windows Partition (as does the Live CD Account) described above does.

  159. ok now TAKE A BREAK CLEM — DO IT
rememeber i said take a break DO IT — or don’t do it haha get it
all this work you been doin – yeah take a break for a couple days

  160. Congratulations to the whole team’m using lmint 14 RC and this fantastic. and look who is an RC. Comes a great distro out there ..

  161. Hello all, i’m testing the new release and it works great, much better than the 13.
i had just one trouble:suddenly, clicking on a webpage on twitter, pc went in panic with the following message:

14992.686591 Kernel panic – not syncing:fatal exception in interrupt
14992.687566 Panic occurred, switching back to text console.

and pc locked on the message of error.
i rebooted and now it seems ok, but i notice that to all of You as a possible bug.

  162. I can confirm the issue with pop-up notifications mentioned here: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2205#comment-80605 (selecting their placement has no effect).

Also, is it possible to make the notifications dismissable (with Close button)? I know, it is a long-standing issue related to a controversial design decision at some point in the past. But given that you’ve been constantly proving your willingness and ability to change big things – can you change this small one? 😉

  163. Linux Mint 14 is the release I’ve been waiting for. Everything is running fine with the RC. Issues with previous releases are all fixed on our computer. These were small things, that I could not work around.

Mint 10 was fine except it did not support USB3 on our motherboard, probably because of kernel 2.6.35. – FIXED IN MINT 14!
Mint 11 had crashing gnome panel applets. – FIXED IN MINT 14! (with mate)
Mint 12 (I did not use for a long time)
Mint 13 had a bug in MDM – FIXED IN MINT 14!

Now I have this smoothly performing new Linux Mint 14 64-bit mate edition with an up-to-date kernel 3.5, all favourite applications installed, including Wine-based things like Picasa or League of Legends.

I would like to thank the whole Linux Mint development team. Donation is coming soon.

  164. Bug: the installer suggests System-Product-Name. For example, it wanted to set my hostname to bronson-System-Product-Name.

  165. getting tons of this in dmesg… this machine doesn’t have a floppy drive connected.

  166. Hello

Why was “Cinnamon Settings” included in the Mate version of Mint 14 Nadia? see top right in the screenshot.

Can it be removed without causing problems?

    Thanks

  167. I’m trying to install in VirtualBox 3.2.8 OSE r64453.

The md5sum for the download is correct, it’s LinuxMint Mate 64 bit.

The image boots just fine, to the live CD desktop.

Install gets to “detecting hardware” and a pop up error window tells me the Installer crashed.

Might this be a configuration issue with VirtualBox? What environment should I be using (video, network, …)?

  168. Very nice job overall, love the Mate.

Upon installation could not login (would get logged out right away). Had to install nvidia-current to be able to login.

For those who have the same problem, press ctrl alt f2 from the login screen which will open up a terminal, login from the terminal with username and password, then run the following command: sudo apt-get install nvidia-current, then when it’s done run: sudo reboot, and then you should be able to login normally.

  169. Mint 14 Mate and Cinnamon look Great! Wireless on both versions works on my Dell Inspiron 6000 but neither works on my Acer Aspire One D250 netbook.

  170. I can’t get a new user account to stay, upon reboot I get the install icon on the desktop back, and the new user account deleted,,and it says I’m a live user, and I’m not using the live boot cd,,I installed inside windows 7.what am I doing wrong?

  171. Comment in 221 was supposed to say that wireless on both versions of Mint 14 does not work on Aspire One D250. All else of both versions seems to work OK on it.

  172. Having major problems trying to install proprietary drivers for my ATI HD 4000 series card, on my Pavillion laptop?

    Any ideas?

The default drivers runs far too hot for it to be usable.

  173. Hi Clem, it is possible for Mint to come up with a repository we can just add that will “update” Maya to MATE 1.4?

I know I can add the standard MATE repo, but having it as an official Mint repo gives me assurance that Maya will remain stable after the update.

  174. Am I the only one having Menu and Menu Editor issues? I had the same issues in Mint 13 64bit btw, and was hoping and praying that the reinstall would fix it. I installed Mint 14 64bit fresh, not as an upgrade. I reformatted all drives and didn’t even save personal settings or files, the whole shebang just trying to fix this nagging issue.

On Mint 13, right clicking on start and bringing up Menu Editor, I wasn’t able to even move items up or down. I can do that now. But, it’s still not possible for me to move an entry from say, Accessories to Education if I needed to. Basically, where-ever the icon is placed on installation of a program is where that icon stays. There is no way for me to move it to a different category.

I still can’t get to Preferences or Administration with the Cinnamon Menu Editor, only System Tools. I’ve installed Alacarte to be able to access these two categories but, I am still unable to move items out of their category to another category, even with Alacarte.

It’s really weird. Some items that are in Cinnamon Menu Editor in say, the Internet category, are listed in Accessories or some other category in Alacarte or vice-versa.

Some entries are listed multiple times on the start menu and I have to go to either Cinnamon Menu Editor or Alacarte, depending on which one they may show up in, and delete or uncheck the extra entries.

The only menu editor that I have found, that works as far as moving items around to where I want them is one called MenuLibre.

    https://launchpad.net/menulibre

Anyway, I know this is a long, drawn out post but, I was just frustrated and was wondering if I am the only one with these kinds of issues.

  175. I’ve been testing this great OS on my notebook a few days ago, and I just can say that it’s impressive! I really loved the Workspace OSD with the persistents desktops! But, unfortunatelly, there was two bugs that I hope the team fix in the final release – I couldn’t adjust the wallpaper to fill the screen, the wallpaper came adjusted with the “zoom” option and there’s no option to change it, and also, in the live DVD boot, the system consumed a lot more of my expectatives… I have a “Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4500 @ 2.30GHz × 2” and my processor’s load in the system monitor was among 60~80%… But for sure I’ll wait until the final release, and if this problems don’t happen again, I’ll be happy to install this amazing distro on my notebook. Congratulations for one more masterpiece, Linux Mint Team!

  176. I have a Satellite L355-S7915 Toshiba laptop. The video worked amazingly well in Mint 13. When I installed Mint 14 MATE( and while testing from the RC live USB), I noticed the video was very very choppy in full screen mode with VLC and Movie Player. When I installed it on my desktop computer I do not get these issues at all so apparently it only effects certain video cards.

    Intel Celeron CPU 900 @ 2.20 GhZ
    3 gig ram
    Video 1440 x 900 pixels
Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x301)
    X11 Vendor the X.org Foundation

Hope these specs are of some assistance. again the video is only choppy and stuttered in full screen mode.

  177. Custom shortcuts do not work at Cinnamon Settings -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts. When I change “Launch Terminal” to something different from ctrl+alt+t, e.g. alt+q, alt+q does not react, but ctrl+alt+t continues working. I think there is an overlap of cinnamon shortcuts and gnome shortcuts. Thanks!

  178. Clem (#191): Everything helps though whether we reply or not, we do appreciate the help.

Okay, that’s good to know. 🙂

As for the printer settings problem, PB seems to have posted a solution in #206. As the requisite packages are still there, do you think you could at least incorporate a button in the Cinnamon printer settings that launches system-config-printer?

  179. No matter how long and how hard Clem is going to defend this wallpaper, it’s LIFELESS. Deal with it.
There are some other designers in this world, willing and capable to create something better, and something different, I believe.
After all, even in case that this is the best wallpaper in world of all times, it’s dull and boring to keep it for how long now…? You should know that everyone’s first contact with an OS is it’s visual appearance.
And while this concrete wallpaper is one nice design overall, it’s absolutely lifeless and inappropriate as official OS background, and absolutely unrelated to senses that word “Mint” brings. You (Mint devs) are acting about this wallpaper the same way Mark Shuttleworth is acting about Unity. You’ll understand this. If you’re trying to mimic Ubuntu behavior regarding wallpaper, they are changing color shades and mixture if nothing.
I’m not Fedora fan, but you could learn some things about branding and visual identity from them.

  180. A big lack of Cinnamon is that is available just one launcher applet, and is impossible to place many launchers in different places. I miss a lot this function, and I hope to see it soon. Except for that Cinnamon in Mint 14 is the best Desktop that any GNU/Linux has ever had. Congrats!

  181. ISSUE REPORT: “Broken pipe, nm-dispatcher-action Caught signal 15, shotting down”, during off pahes of PC as well it occurred in 13 version…

  182. aelfinn@241

Did that fix work for you? I also posted a tutorial on the Community site, and I put a link to it in post 222. Let me know if that looks okay, or if you would make any particular changes.

  183. Sorry to say this, but my installation keeps crashing. Randon time, sometimes 5 minute after startup, sometimes after 2 hours. Why is this happening? Running mint14 RC x64, up to date..
Also, how do you install a new video driver? Jockey is gone now 😕

  184. I was enjoying Nadia until a repository update broke mythtv package. Another machine install of Nadia and confirms that mythtv will not install due to broken packages. I hope it gets fixed soon.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
mythtv : Depends: mythtv-database but it is not going to be installed
Depends: mythtv-frontend but it is not going to be installed
Depends: mythtv-backend but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

  185. wireless drivers are not working at all …..using bcm 4313 802\b\g\n …..tried to install windows drivers ndiswrapper could not be found

  186. Florin@248

While I’m unable to explain your system crashes, I believe I can help on driver installation. It depends somewhat on whether or not you are using MATE or Cinnamon.

First of all, you have the option of installing jockey-gtk in either MATE or Cinnamon. Once that is done, you can open a terminal and typing “sudo jockey-gtk.” Enter the admin password, and you’re presented with the typical Jockey driver installation window.

But if you are running MATE, you can avoid the above altogether, and go to Control Center–>Software Sources, and when that window presents itself, simply select the drivers software tab which should be the third tab over. That will allow you to install 3rd party drivers.

There may be other ways of doing it, but the above are options that have both worked for me. I hope that helps.

  187. Florin,

I could be slightly off on the Software Sources window tabs, but you get the idea. Just keep your eyeballs peeled and you should see where you need to go. Let me know if that works, and hopefully the system crashes will get ironed out soon.

  188. General response: in my system Mint 14 Mate 64-bit works very good.

I hope in ALSA 1.0.26 implementation (24 bit audio format output) and “Broken pipe, nm-dispatcher-action Caught signal 15, shotting down” definitive solution also if it is not a serious problem.

    That’s my system specs: mainboard:p5vd1-x; CPU:pentium 4 670; DDR:OCZ platinum ddr400 2x1GB; VGA:Sapphire HD3850 AGP; PPU:Ageia physx card APU:Xonar d2X; Sound System:Edifier S550.

  189. As a matter of fact i did install jockey-gtk. But when i ran it, the terminal says it’s not installed, and i should run apt-get install jockey-gtk first.. weird. (yes, ran it as root.. sudo apt-get install jockey-gtk).. got no errors.. but it didnt launch.
Didn’t look in the software manager, cus when i was trying to install wine, it froze on me(just the manager, not the entire system). So i was thinking it’s bugged atm..

  190. Florin@254

Are you using Cinnamon or MATE?

Again, if your are using MATE, you can navigate to Control Center–>Software Sources, and select the last tab to the right of the window which should be driver software.

  191. Florin

I’m sorry but I should have told you to install jockey-common also. Then you can install jockey-gtk for GUI. Sorry about that.

  192. I really like the improvements, I’ve used Mint since version 10 and have distro hopped back and forth between Mint and Ubuntu, but have always used Mint as my main operating system. What impressed me the most about the RC was the ease of install and the overall use.

Good work, waiting for the final release at the end of this month.

  193. Bug Report: On a System76 Gazelle Professional, with the noveau drivers the system freezes when waking up after sleeping.

I installed the NVIDIA 304.64 drivers, and now the system sleeps and wakes up correctly, unless I’m playing music while I go into sleep. In that case it just reboots the system when I try to wake it up.

  194. Florin,

I just installed LM14-Cinnamon on a test drive, and I can confirm that if you click on Menu, and scroll to Software Sources, it will have a tab all the way to the right called “Additional Drivers.” There is where you can install 3rd party video drivers. This goes for Cinnamon and MATE. For some reason, I did not see that on the live session.

I hope this helps, sorry for the fumbling around, I’m still learning also.

  195. Actually, I take that back, even with the NVIDIA 304.64 drivers, the system just reboots when I try to wake it up. Sometimes it correctly wakes up, but most times it just reboots on wake up.

  196. Another thing that looks like a bug (in the Cinnamon 64-bit version): the login sound cannot be disabled. At least the check box in the login settings is not functional and the sound is played even when the box is unchecked.

  197. I can’t install Comodo Anti Virus for Linux on this RC (neither on 13). I get these errors while configuring after the installation:

    /opt/COMODO/load_cmdagent.sh: 64: .: Can’t open /etc/init.d/functions
    /opt/COMODO/load_cmgdaemon.sh: 64: .: Can’t open /etc/init.d/functions

    Can someone please help?

  198. Hi Clem,

Please Fix UEFI installation in LM14 cinnamon & mate, I was scared to see that UEFI isn’t shipped in default RC ISO image & while this is inherited from Ubuntu.. Can’t we just let UEFI in its place for installation on newer laptops.

Ubuntu-12.10 installed on UEFI machines without any hassel, but why Linux Mint-14 is incompatible with UEFI bootloaders ?

Please fix UEFI in LM14. This will add 500 more laptops to enjoy.. Mint Nadia.. !

    Thanks in Advance.

  199. Installed Nadia Mint 14 64-bit RC Cinnamon over Maya Mint 13 yesterday.
    NADIA JUST ROCKS.
Most complete and stable RC I have used.
I installed Skype after running option to allow 32-bit software

    sudo dpkg –add-architecture i386
    apt update.

Everything worked great keep up the FANTASTIC work.
    Thank you!

  200. Thanks for the tip by PB in 258 about “Additional Drivers” I was able to get the wireless working on my Aspire One D250!

  201. Hi Clem, thank you and the team so much for the release! Keep up the good work!

I have a question though: does the new Cinnamon/Mate offer anything like a Tiling Desktop system? I’m using Mate with Compiz just because of the Compiz Grid plugin alone. With it, I can reorganize the windows on my desktop with just a few key strokes. Does Cinnamon has anything equivalent?

I don’t want to spend time installing it just to come back to the old one. Tiling Desktop is a must have for me now :(. I can’t stand the feeling of having to touch the mouse to move things anymore.

If it doesn’t have, do you think it’s a viable feature for LinuxMint 15? Imagine the look of Cinnamon with the usability of xmonad. You will be the king of desktop soon.

    Best regards,

  202. Hello, a few issues noticed, but great OS and distro.

    Screen frozen black after sleep-mode.
If I lock screen only, no problem. Problem only appears when screen is physically shut on notebook.

I also noticed that the Brightness applets and prefs do not function. Tried implementing the /etc/default/grub “” trick, but it only kills applets, and Fn keys remain dead. Insofar, Fn keys toggle Brightness controls, slows mouse response while in operation, but without screen effect. Perhaps another thread?

Cannot get drivers recognized for the Card Reader. Made Make install of latest realtek driver, no luck on startup.
04:00.0 Unassigned class [ff00]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTS5229 PCI Express Card Reader (rev 01)

How does one get the scanner to function on an HP Officejet 6600? Printer works fine, just the scanner is being a pickle.

I’m a total noob, thank you for a walk-through, would be much obliged.

    Respectfully,

    Olivier

  203. The Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon that i installed don’t run in my PC. It will just show black desktop then it automatically turns off.

    My PC have the following.
    AMD A6 3500 processor
    4GB Memory

I hope anybody can tell me what went wrong in my installation.

By the way when i tried the demo it will not run on Linux Mint option but in “compatibility mode only”

  204. Software Manager freezes when clicking on items within it. I saw it mentioned several times above and was just adding to that. Also, the icons for Software Manager in the main Categories box are also missing. Mint 14 64bit.

    Icons missing:

    http://i.imgur.com/h2iRF.png

    Photo of frozen Software Manager

    http://i.imgur.com/Ds6UK.png

I know everyone that contributes to Linux does this for free and out of the goodness of their hearts. But, if anyone is around that may know that this is a known issue, could you maybe just take a second and say it is known, don’t worry about, we will get to it when we get to it.

Otherwise, and I don’t know why, but I will probably imagine this is something I did wrong and will want to try to fix it on my own and will probably just mess other things up in the process.

  205. I am waiting impatiently for this release after using the disappointing 12.10 Ubuntu. Just wanna ask something here. I heard about the ext4 bug where all data could be corrupted. I wonder If that has been addressed in this Mint version?

  206. Ok, ty guys for clearing me up on how to install drivers 😀 Now, i just hope that the freezing will be sorted when Nadia will be finished…

If the developers need to run some tests to see why this crashes, so that they can prevent it from happening to other people, contact me at carpatian_forest92@yahoo.com

  207. Great! Some software update over the last few days fixed the sleep/suspend issue. I’m good 😉

    Again thanks to all

  208. Downloading it now to give it a test drive!! thanks..
Please, please dont forget if possible to fix the remote desktop (vino-server maybe?) option so when we manage it remotely would be possible to get the full cinnamon desktop instead of the classic (which was missing a lot of shortcuts)!!!

  209. Retract what I said before, it seems like it was fixed!! I just installed it on ESXi5.1 and tested vnc to it.. it shows the nice cinnamon desktop NICE!!!!! thanks!!! thanks!!!

it looks great! I will play it for a while… 🙂

  210. I just purchased an Acer Aspire M5-481PT with 14-inch (1,366 x 768) panel (TOUCH SCREEN), Core i5 CPU and 6GB of RAM, though its 500GB hard drive is paired with a 20GB SSD for faster boot-ups with Windows 8.
I Wound up HATING Windows 8 and thought this would be a great Linux Mint computer. I can boot up to a USB with Linux Mint 14 (can’t with LM12, horrible video) and install LM 14 but when I restart it won’t work in UEFI mode but if I switch to Legacy Bios it works. So, do I need UEFI? If so, can someone provide a CLEAR way to fix this? I’ve seen a couple of fixes but they assume a few steps and I’m immediately lost.

  211. I forgot to ask, my laptop comes with a 20gb ssd for faster boot-up. My question is, does Linux Mint take advantage of the SSD for the faster boot-up or ignore it altogether?

  212. Hi there,

I am testing the German version of Mint 14 Cinnamon x64 RC right now and I can’t seem to find the gufw symbol in the Cinnamon Start Menu. The program does exist and can be opened via terminal, but I prefer modern GUIs over command consoles. Could you please fix that?

Otherwise, Mint 14 runs without problems, but it also seems to be the slowest Mint I have experienced so far (Mint 9 was the fastest). Can anything be done about that?

  213. Skype, wine and playonlinux don’t work on mate. Error when trying to install playonlinux on synaptic:
    playonlinux:
    Depends: wine or
wine-stable but it is not installable or
wine-unstable but it is not installable
    Please hepl!

  214. I have the same issue with massive CPU utilisation when running under Cinnamon in Linux Mint 14.

(Note that I didn’t have such problems with v13. Also, it doesn’t seem to occur every single time I login to Mint, but there’s no obvious trigger.)

  215. Does not work with Acer-Aspireone-AOD270 after installation is completed. Ubuntu 12.10 will not boot on the acer-netbooks

  216. This one would be The One just as Mint 10 was The One but it has the same catastrophically critical flaw as Mint 10:

An effective lifespan of 16 months.

I refuse to play the stupid Ubuntu upgrade game. It’s only LTS releases for me. This one looks perfect but it’s like a Replicant in Blade Runner: too short a lifespan.

    Damned Shame…

  217. i love it so far.
i have one issue running on dell xps 8500
the system does not reboot or shutdown completely
the monitor turns off but the system is still on
    any ideas

  218. Some small suggestions on the systray:

    1) With a right click you have the mute toggle for sound. I would like this toggle for notifications as well. So I can turn it off easily.
    2) With the right click you can easily mute sound input/output. Why not mute also when clicking on the sound image at the volume control. After a click the sounds mute and another image is shown with a cross though the sound image.
3)Wireless Connections are sorted by name. My SSID starts with a ‘Z’ (my mistake). Isn’t more obvious to order by signal strenght as the one you need mostly come on top.

  219. The menu should have the option of clicking on a category to open it and having that category stay open if clicked instead of the current hover scenario. I hate jockeying around with the menu before I accidentally move over another category and having it open instead of where I really want to be.

  220. Installed Nadia Mate 32bit on two completely different laptops here. As usual, highly polished & beautiful highly functional low resource usage. No new problems.

Thank you very much to the team.
Best Linux distro for mere mortals on this planet.
Will be donating time & money to help.

    Chris

  221. I am having issues installing Mint 14 on EFI. I select Erase Disk and it formats all partitions, and continues to install.
Eventually towards the end of setup, it displays:

“The Grub-efi package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB bootloader, the installed system will not boot.”

In order to install Mint, I have to enable Legacy Support in the BIOS and install the old fashioned way. I can not install Mint on UEFI on my system although Ubuntu 12.10 works flawlessly. Also, Secure Boot is disabled in my BIOS.

  222. A few things. There still is the occasional crash; though it’s quite rare.

Also, sometimes a customized bar squishes text and icons, causing them to be replaced with squares of a solid color. This is particularly common on reboot. Resizing the bar fixes it temporarily.

  223. Hey all,

ATI proprietary Drivers are not showing up in software sources for me. It says nothing available. I enabled everything in software sources but it still don’t show up. Plus, When I try to install manually, it does not install and gives me bunch of errors.

Graphics card is ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 4300. Everything worked fine on earlier versions of Linux Mint.

  224. Oh and I need proprietary drivers because without them, my Dell Laptop has its fan running at full speed at all times….

  225. @Burhan:

I recall reading somewhere that ATI is no longer supporting the HD4000 series in versions of Ubuntu past 12.04. Google it. That would mean that it’s up to the open source driver teams.

  226. Disregard #279. I did a repair install and it fixed up all issues that I was having with software manager and synaptic. God only knows what I did to screw them up because, they both worked fine when I first installed 14. But, I’m a tweaker and tweak some things that shouldn’t be tweaked or cleaned up sometimes. One day I will learn, maybe. Maybe not. I guess that is what makes it fun.

That was the first time I had done a repair install on Linux but, it worked great. No previously installed files or packages were erased or damaged. All the programs I had added in extra were still there, no harm to my personal files at all, etc… All it did was to fix the problems that I had already created by altering things and put all of that back to like it was when I clean installed.

If anyone is interested and are having problems that you may have created yourself, follow the instructions here:

    http://tidelog.kitamuracomputers.net/?p=1648

for a “Repair Install”. It will only fix things and not change or alter anything else. As you proceed, it will throw up a warning that everything will be erased but, it won’t be.

Just make sure to NOT have any partitions marked to format, make sure all your mount points are the same as they were the first time you installed and I even entered in the same password as I did originally when it asked for it, just to be safe.

  227. Hello,

I have a problem with the cinnamon taskbar in Nadia RC. Everything worked fine untill after a recent restart all icons on the right side of the taskbar appear huge. I’m using the Glass Mint cinnamon theme and after going to troubleshoot and restoring all settings to default all problems dissappear. When I set this theme again everything works fine, but after one or two restarts the problem appears again. Here is a screenshot: http://i48.tinypic.com/2pq540p.png

  230. Hello!
I’m try to install LM 14 RC Cinnamon and this is hangs on at the boot logo on my laptop dell inspiron n 5040 (int.intel graphic).

  231. I’ll try to install LM 13 and after that upgrade to LM14 RC. May be something wrong with installation services. Pls, explain somebody how to upgrade to 14 RC!
    Thanks for advice!

  232. I tried installing Linux Mint 14-cinnamon RC, but getting the following error, every time without fail, but the same steps are working with ubuntu-12.10:

    ——————————————————————–
“The Grub-efi package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB bootloader, the installed system will not boot.”
    ———————————————————————

I am trying to install Mint Cinnamon – 64-bit OS.

Clem please fix this error while installation on UEFI machines.

  233. Roj@289

I’m in the same boat with you, I think LM14 is a huge step in the right direction, and too bad it’s not LTS. From my personal experience LM9 was the best LTS and version period. I know some others, like yourself, saw some benefits in LM10. I saw the benefits too, but there were a couple of drawbacks for me personally. Both are still the greatest so far though.

But if you are so interested, below is a suggestion that I implemented that was given to me by Kirk M. It will point you to the sources you need to pull in some things that are in LM14. While it seems to work okay, and there are definite improvements after running an update, I haven’t seen all the changes implemented like they are in LM14RC, particularly to themes, etc. Perhaps a fresh install of LM13 after LM14 becomes stable will be the ticket. This is all somewhat new to me, so I’m not exactly sure what to expect. Up until now, I’ve just been content to stick with the LTS, and not worry about certain things. But this might be a game changer. We’ll see. Anyway, below is a copy/paste from what Kirk M gave me. Try if you like.

    ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable”

Before you update, modify your “/etc/apt/preferences” file:

    “gksu gedit /etc/apt/preferences”

And add the following section and save:

    Package: *
    Pin: origin ppa.launchpad.net
    Pin-Priority: 700

    =====================================================

    Burhan@294,

    2 Questions:

How are your actual CPU temps? Are the okay, and it’s just that your fan is wide open? If that’s all normal then question number 2 is:

Have you ever used i8kutils packages to control Dell specific functions like fans and such?

The reason I ask is you will probably find that the nouveau driver is working very well. I was actually quite surprised when I tried LM14 with out the nvidia driver. All 3D functions seemed to be really smooth, including some heavy screen savers. Up until now, the nvidia driver was one of the first things I downloaded, but not any more. I think there a few issues with 2 displays though, but that might be unique to Ubuntu. I have a dual monitor setup at work, and one monitor has an annoying flicker, and the resolutions aren’t configured correctly. I haven’t run across a fix yet without having to install the nvidia driver, and then tweaking xorg.conf.

But if your fan speed just needs some tweaking, perhaps i8kutils will help. When you select that for installation, it pulls in two dependencies from what I can tell–tcl8.4 and tk8.4. I think the tk package is a graphical front end that’s supposed to make it easy to tweak. I will warn you that I’ve never had a use for it personally, so I have no idea how useful it is, but may be worth a try.

The only other think I would check is to make sure there isn’t a more up to date chipset driver that may behave a little better. The bottom line is if you can get by without the ATI driver, the better off you’ll be. But if you need it, you need.

  234. Please consider rolling into install unity facility to BACKUP MBR!

  235. 1. Could Startup-Manager be added to some repo for Nadia?
    2. I see Nadia has LibreOffice 3.6. Could this be added to the backport repo for Maya?
    3. There seems to be an unnecessarily large number of additional files to be loaded with the Shiki-Wise theme (Nadia with Mate).

  236. So far so good it seems. I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 12.10 and I had way to many problems to keep that around (networking, printing, dvd playback, for starters). Having Mint on another box and the appeal of MATE I decided to give Mint 14 a try.

Installing it along-side 12.10 was effortless. I’m so relieved that the original gnome path is being refreshed in the form of MATE. It just works.

What a great thing the Linux distro world is… Something not working for you? Try another. 🙂

  237. Nadia mint14 looks and feels very polished, installed on a usb stick runs flawlessly on my HP Pavilion dv7…

Looking forward to the final release…

Great Job Clem and Team…. Keep up your great and most appreciated work…

  238. About ATI free drivers, the sound on the HDMI port doesn’t work on my motherboard, ASROCK 880GMH/US with Radeon 4250 chipset, but the graphic driver works well, even with dual screens configuration.

Other suggestions : there is no need of bletooth or modemmanager, why are they installed on desktop configurations ?

  239. Hi guys, I tested Mint 14 64-bit in my Dell Studio 1558 + i5 + ATI 4500 Series.
My opinion about Mint 14 RC-LiveCD.

-Firewall (gufw) icon is no shown in the Menu (MATE and Cinnamon).
-Please change: HPLIP 3.12.4 to new 3.12.10a, Adobe Flash Player to 11.2.202.251, Liferea 1.8.3 to 1.8.10, SFLphone 1.1.0 to 1.2.0

Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?

    and also

    Unable to mount UDISK
Device /dev/sdc1 is already mounted at `/media/mint/UDISK’.

-Using second external monitor (laptop + monitor) sometimes after logout and login in panel “MENU” are artefacts (Cinnamon).
    – In 2 monitors work, when close laptop lid no suspend. Only external monitor is off (Cinnamone). No problem in MATE.
-Switching monitors better work in MATE. In Cinnamon very slow.

    Thanks for add Linphone 3.5.2

Linux Mint is the best distro!

  240. Linux Mint 14 RC does not recognize microphone input from my headset. It works fine in Mint 10 and 11. In Mint 14 I cannot chose input device in the audio control panel. I installed Alsamixer, but that did not solve the problem.

    What can I do?

  241. Another issue with Mint 14 Mate 64bit: In Conky the font Webdings is not displayed correctly. There are only rectangels instead of other chars. Webdings is diplayed fine in LibreOffice on the same machine.

  242. I havent been too old in Linux…I enjoy this one very much. There is a problem using the software manager. Installed about two programs using it. After that I couldn’t install any other one. When u launch it freezes.
I need Wine and Skype, and others but I can’t get it for this reason. Cinnamon 64bit

  243. Hi Clem,

    thanks, well done.

Some issues that my wife encountered:
    1) uploading a picture (ie on facebook) doesn’t show the image when choosing the file, she has to remember the filename to take the right one
    2) browsing files over bluetooth on the Sony Erisson C510 didn’t work, but the strange thing was, that the notifications in the panel count up, but they couldn’t be opened and viewed
    3) I am missing a tool like the StartUp-Manager (available at Ubuntu, very usefully, but unfortunately no longer maintained) or the grub-customizer in the SW-center.

maybe you could consider my input, thx.

  244. 4) in the SW-center there are the nasty reviews like “running slow on my machine” that are worthless. I would suggest to add a value representing the number of downloaded/installed programs and usage, rather than emotional ratings.

  245. Updated from Mint 13 with apt method. No particular problem.

However, it is sad that mdm now conflicts with gnome-shell, because i like both.

  246. Very nice, work faster than Lxde10, I can now adjust brightness on my Lenovo t60
The only problem – ntfs or fat32 partitions unable to mount
    I must use mountmanager
    All the best

  247. Until such time (if ever) that the “current” (Gnome) version of Linux Mint can be user-configured for the Mac OS X look-and-feel (see Mac4Lin), I’ll stick with Linux Mint 11 (Katya). For me, it’s perfect “as-is”.

    Desktop: AOpen DX-34R-U motherboard, dual 1.4GHz Pentium-III CPUs, 2GB SDRAM, 500GB 5400rpm SATA hard-drive
    Netbook: ASUS 1005PEB, 1.6GHz Atom 450N CPU, 2GB RAM, 250GB 5400rpm SATA hard-drive

  248. I’m using Mint 13 Cinnamon 64, I installed Mint 14 RC Cinnamon 64 in VitualBox, and I don’t have internet connection (I don’t have this problem with other distros or with Windows).

I can’t comment much more, since 14 RC is, for me, atm, useless. I was curious, if GoogleEarth will work in 14 RC (because I can’t even install it in 13 – it gets stuck at 16 or 17 %). I guess I’ll never know.

Looking forward to functional release. Mint is great. The only thing that concerns me is quite high processor hunger while idle. (And not being able to install GoogleEarth, as I’ve already mentioned.)

  249. 5) about favorite programs: if I use a netbook with limited resolution and I add a lot of favorites (around 10) then the symbols/icons get smaller and smaller and don’t look well anymore. So what I would suggest is a solution like in the Ubuntu Unity, where the symbols keep the size (that can be configured) and the overlapping once are collected in reduced space. This is a good approach.

  250. To Russel #328,

You need Pulse Audio Volume Control, it’s in the repositories under Pavucontrol.

    http://i.imagebanana.com/img/9n0bsxjr/VolumeControl_002.png

As you can see in the link, you can control all your devices much easier with this. A good bit of advice to follow is to put all tab pages of the program on All Input Devices or All Output Devices or ALL streams, etc… down at the bottom where it says SHOW. That way, you can make sure you are seeing all options available.

  251. I put the 32 bit Cinnamon on a USB stick and tried it live from the USB stick on three different laptops so far. Two of the laptops have Pentium dual core processors. On those laptops the processors were running between 60% and 80% when idling with only the system monitor running. I tried it on another laptop with an AMD Turion dual core and it idled at about 15% processor usage. Cinnamon ran fine and smoothly on all the laptops however, even with the high usage.

    It’s a great looking distro!

  252. Computer: System76 Gazelle Professional 8 (gazp8)

Adjusting screen brightness does not work through using the kyeboard (FN key & +/-). I’ve gotta manually adjust it through the Brightness & Lock menu.

Goto Cinnamon>Panel> and click On Allow Cinnamon to Scale panel text and Icons.

  254. Hi guys!
I have a trouble with LM14RC. Perhaps, it’s a problem with #060: Intel chipset on my laptop dell inspiron n 5040. I’ve posted this bug in bug tracker. Just want to pay attention Clem.
Thank u for your good work!

  255. 6) Login: I have encrypted home, but just one user profile, so it is not very comfortable to type in the user name (and pwd) for login. A selection of the users like in other distros would be comfortable (and standard).

  256. Hey

I am currently running Mint 13 as my only OS and need to do a reinstall within the next few days – no fault of Mint – just need to have windows running for a music program that works terribly in virtualbox and wine. 🙁

So I downloaded 14 and am very excited to try it – but seeing as it’s RC should I wait or will upgrade from RC be simple?

    Thanks in advance.

  257. Josif,

I am just guessing but, if someone said today that that an upgrade from 13 would be simple, something might crop up in the next few days or so which changed the situation.

I’m in pretty much the same position as you (though for different reasons) and I feel it’s best to wait. What’s galling is that Mint 13 is a LTS for several years, while a (hopefully) better program is going to last for 6 months!

  258. Josif and Trevor,

I agree those of us in that position–like myself–should wait. But the good news is that typically, Clem will back port so that we can have some of the good things about the latest too. I’m looking forward to see how all of this will pan out. But again, there’s nothing wrong with sitting on it for now.

  259. I have been enjoying learning the changes with the 32bit Cinnamon LM14RC, but I seem to have encountered a problem with the Gnome Online Accounts bit. I installed Empathy (to make use of the ‘people nearby’ feature – which no longer seems to work) but upon putting in details of my Google account, the icon for Online Accounts has disappeared from the Settings window. This means I can no longer change or add more online accounts, and all software which calls on it (eg, Gwibber etc) is useless.
I do have the Google account working with Empathy, however I can’t even delete it and start again.
I don’t know where to start with this at the terminal.
Utterly brilliant so far though, despite 2 crashes and a screen barf.

  260. I’m getting the same error as #301, 303, and 314 with 64-bit Cinnamon on a new Dell Vostro desktop. “The ‘grub-efi’ package failed to install into /target/.”

  261. To CtrlAltDel #338

Thank you for replying. I got the mic running with pavucontrol.
    🙂

Hope this will become easier to handle again, though, with the next Mate/Mint update.

  262. I got around the UEFI error (“The grub-efi package failed to install into /target/.”) by booting my USB install stick without UEFI.

When I select a device for BIOS to boot from, there is a Legacy Boot section and a UEFI Boot section. I didn’t notice that my USB stick shows up under both sections, with somewhat different names. When I boot from the USB stick in the UEFI section, i get the grub-efi error upon install; when I boot from the USB stick in the Legacy section, I get a successful install.

This is Cinnamon 64-bit on a new Dell Vostro desktop.

Also, the default drivers give my monitor full HD resolution, while in Mint 13 it would only give 1280×1024… yay!

  263. i’m loving Mint 14 with Cinnamon so far. haven’t been this happy with my set-up for ages.

i’ve found a bug with the bluetooth applet in Cinnamon 1.6.7 on Mint 14RC. I’m using an AD2P bluetooth speaker set, and when I enable the connection using the bluetooth applet, the toggle switches to “ON”, but nothing happens. I have to go into bluetooth settings and enable the connection there. Likewise when I come to disable the connection — the toggle in the applet responds, but nothing happens, and I have to use the bluetooth settings dialogue.

on a related point, when the AD2P sink is enabled, it doesn’t show up in the sound applet (unless I restart Cinnamon), so I have to use pavucontrol to send audio streams to the bluetooth speaker set. however, since I usually do this anyway, this is not a big problem for me (I want to send the output for some programs to the external speakers, and others to my laptop’s internal speakers. no audio applet yet available makes this possible, sadly, so I always have pavucontrol open anyway).

    cheers!

  264. Hi guys

I tried installing 32bit version as a virtual machine (Virtual Box Win 7 Host). Ran compatibility mode and it said kernel version required PAE enabled CPU. Something i can quickly rectify in a virtual machine. Will a PAE supported CPU be required on a physical machine?

  265. Lots of improvements in the new Cinnamon 1.6.x branch–much faster than the old one–kudos! btw., has there been any thoughts on using more than one hot corner (one to show all windows of one application, for instance?)

On a more serious note–anyone here using sssd with autofs on Mint 14?

It appears the ‘lookup_sss.so’ module is missing from the autofs package. Obviously, this breaks the sssd lookups for automounted homedirs.

  266. Has anyone tried accessing a data DVD using Nemo 1.1.2? I have and it isn’t easy. First of all, on insertion, Nemo says that it’s a video DVD and no files appear. To make the files that are stored on the DVD appear, you have to dismount and remount the dvd drive.

Secondly, once the files do appear, clicking on them has no effect. In order to gain access to any file on the disk, no matter the extension, you have to drag them to the desktop or another folder on your computer.

  267. I’m wondering if anyone else is having the following problem. For some reason, I am unable to add any repositories. Each time I want to add a repository to keep a particular package updated, I get the following error:

Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/libreoffice/ppa/ubuntu/dists/maya/main/source/Sources 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/libreoffice/ppa/ubuntu/dists/maya/main/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

The above is just an example among many attempts to add different sources through Synaptic. At one time this was a no brainer operation that worked every time. Now it works none of the time–for me anyway. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I feel like I’m missing something very obvious, but as this has worked so reliably in the past, I’m failing to see what’s wrong.

  268. In addition to the comment at 361, it appears that the links included in the error message don’t work either. I’m sure it’s related but can’t figure it.

  269. Suggestion: Linux Mint doesn’t have a recovery option creating restore points, there is a technical reason why this is not included and thought to be unnecessary. However, what these reasons do not consider is human error. Linux might be extremely stable and “the linux OS” may not need these recovery points, but I, the human, do need them. I know you should backup, and I do, but it’s not the same.

    Thanks for the wonderful work.

Has anyone tried accessing a data DVD using Nemo 1.1.2?

Yep Just Tried it and was a dvd +R made with dvdshrink & Nero on my windows machine. Just inserted and no dialog just mounted and browsed the Video_TS folder. Right click copy a small .bup file and then pasted it into my home directory.

Secondly, once the files do appear, clicking on them has no effect. In order to gain access to any file on the disk, no matter the extension, you have to drag them to the desktop or another folder on your computer.

    Sounds like a permissions issue?

Just played the movie with Gnome player no issues.

  271. To Orbmiser,

Did you have to move it to a a home directory folder to play the movie or could you play right off the disk?

  272. Right from the disc!
I would check your drives permission in mount points?

Just a guess on my part. My info using Disk usage in Accessories for drive is:

    ATAPI iHAS124 Y (BL0V)
    DVD+R Disc
    /dev/sr0 (Read-Only)
    Yes, mounted at /media/orbmiser/NEW

Restore point????? Obviously, you’ve never experience the “benefit” of a restore point in the wrong hands. I understand why you might find a very specific use for it, but more often than not, it’s generally utilized by people who barely know what a keyboard is. In other words, they’ve really screwed up their system, and they have no clue as to how to fix the problem. So they “restore.” For example, I gave someone my old laptop which was in really nice working order, and not very old. I cleared off my user accounts and all critical data, and set up a user account for them. Within a week they had a problem with dial up Internet. According to them, they got it working initially, but then it stopped. So what did they do? You guessed it. They “restored” it. Of course the last restore point was created before I cleared off all our user accounts. So guess what? I get a phone call that they can’t login anymore and need a password. Once I finally drag out of them what happened, I had to do the whole thing over. And you guessed right again, that is definitely a person who barely knows what a keyboard is.

Obviously, you’re not one of those people, as you are responsible enough to back up your critical data correctly. And make no mistake, when you restore, it really isn’t very good for the system. If you’re using Windows as a reason for having a restore point, that is an especially bad example. It’s like putting one small band-aide on a leg amputation.

Your best bet is to explore how different users are partitioning their hard drives in preparation for OS installation. Some have different partitions for home folder and other data, etc., while the actual OS exists on a partition all by itself. If something goes wrong with the system, you can reinstall in just a few minutes to that same partition, and all your data and home folder is still on a different partition so it is untouched. This is a much more effective and beneficial way to “restore” your system. There are other methods as well that will make you forget all about “restore” points.

I hope that was helpful, I’m not trying to be contrary just to be contrary.

  274. Tried to install Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon version. I meet the minimum requirements to do an install (And in point of fact I successfully installed the MATE version of LM14). It starts to do the partition and then the screen goes haywire and displays only gibberish.

I am not newbie, It is a WD 500 Gigs Hard drive which also contains LM12 & LM13.

  275. Hi Clem & Team,
great Release, but here are “my” glitches (1,2 & 6 also MATE, rest just Cinnamon):

    1. No sound with default Nouveau video driver (no visible errors, it just doesn’t output sound). With NVidia drivers it works. Tested only with stereo analog output.
    2. During install I chose “encrypt personal data” or similar. This doesn’t work with MDM settings “auto or timed auto login”, gives a few authorize errors. Bug or not? And if not, could it be avoided more elegant? For example, no MDM login settings choosable when /home encrypted?
    3. Still freeze in Cinnamon when testing a lot of (pre-installed) themes without restarting cinnamon (~10 theme changes, always checking how the menu looks like). Top and bottom toolbars, autohide enabled (if that matters).
    4. Toolbar autohide, menu on mouse over: the whole opened menu “jumps” a few pixels from the border away when you move the cursor from the toolbar into the menu.
    5. Mouse is frozen after suspend/hibernate. Even logout/login or restart Cinnamon doesn’t help.
    6. Some bad German sentences during the install slideshow (Du/Sie changes, grammatic errors, unusual expressions etc.). If really someone reads this (besides not actual pics or shown software), it’s not the best “first” contact for new users. If you will further use this slideshow, I would like to correct/update the German text for the next release. How?

    Thanks a lot!

  276. Problem whit the soundcard when i login I get sound from ERROR in login or if the login is a success but then i dont get sound.

BUT if I plug in my headphones I get sound and when i plug out them the “Fix” still works and i get sound from my laptop and speakers if I plug in them.
