  1. Dear Clement and Linux Mint Team: I’m a happy user since Linux Mint 13. Thank you very much for the big effort you put on this project. I think that for the future should come installed by default “Variety” (a nice wall paper changer) and “Caffeine 2.4.1” (screensaver blocker useful for watching videos or movies). Still waiting for the 17.1 upgrade 🙂

  2. As I posted yesterday, in the 17.1 RC (MATE) thread (http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2711#comment-113034)

After reading post #47 (Snowfall sez), I decided to be precocious, and downloaded the LM 17.1 ISO image for the x86 (32-bit) MATE version; yes, the md5sum values matched. I then burned the image to a fresh DVD, and rebooted my dual-core Intel Pentium4 workstation (4GB RAM) in LiveCD mode. So far, so good.

Auto-booted as the default Mate user, then made my single-most-important test: mouse click-R, open a terminal, cursor at prompt, then press a(ny) key on the keyboard. BOOM! Session restart to login window.

The keyboard is a genuine IBM PS/2 keyboard — model number KB-9910 — and this session-restart behavior has been a constantly recurring problem with every version since (but not including) Linux Mint 13.

It doesn’t happen with the Ubuntu base distribution, nor with any other Linux distribution based on the Ubuntu base distribution.

    What’s up with this?

NOTE: This behavior DOES NOT happen with a USB keyboard; neither does it occur on my ASUS 1005PEB netbook. I have been using this PS/2 keyboard since 2002, with a variety of OSes and without any problems, until (and solely with) post-LM/13 distros.

  3. Cool new release!

And via the release-Notes I also got Digikam back to work (with installing half of the kde-Desktop 😀 )

What I like most is, that all these default-themes can be reworked as one likes. I have replaced some of the icons with the zon-color-icons, which looks pretty good!!

Then I like these new improvements as Clem has written in the posting about this new MATE-Release! Great Job, Clem!! Keep this up and let it continue in the future!!

Then I also found, that f-spot has really improved and could turn into a real Alternative for Picasa, if development goes on like this. The Developers are on a right way!! Let this develop onwards and bring up future ideas!! Let f-spot grow in the future!! I like it!! Because: one can say: who the devil needs Google??
    Right Answer: NOBODY 😀

But what would be needed for the future is a real opensource-Alternative for Google-Maps. And this Alternative could be integrated into Marble and let this also grow in the future. Because: I see Marble on a right way for becomeing a real Alternative what referrs to Google-Earth. If the developers continue on this right path and develop a real opensource Alternative for Google-Maps, then Marble could get the potential, to crush down Google-Earth and replace it in the future.

Then I also want to suggest a further european search-engine with very good privacy, which could be integrated into LinuxMint:

    https://unbubble.eu/

This is a very good and joung search-engine, wich has entered the market just this year. And here, you can read the privacy-declaration of them:

    https://unbubble.eu/info/en-US/terms#privacy

So I would greet it, if this search-engine could be integrated into LinuxMint.

Then the second search-engine, which I want to suggest for LinuxMint is the fresh release of MetaGer:

    https://www.metager.de/beta/

They have just released a new version of their current search-engine, which also grants pretty good privacy, according to their Data-security-declaration:

    https://www.metager.de/beta/privacy/

So this search-engine would be my second new suggestion for the list of available search-engines in LinuxMint.

And last, I want to say thank you so much for this nice Pre-Christmas-Present with getting Emerald-Theme-Manager back working in LinuxMint 17.1! This was really overdue!! Thanks so much, Clem!! Therefore, you have really earned your Christmas-presents!!

  4. ManO, I sure hope the upgrade come soon for the Mint 17 gang…
I thought they would be released at the same time…
Waiting on pins and needles to upgrade my existing system.
I don’t want to have to reinstall my entire OS, but still want to keep up with the latest version of Mint out.

  5. Then I can say, that – with Emerald-Theme-Manager enabled – there is also no problem with running Videos or music-files. Everything seems to work so far now.

And if you like a bit of christmas-feeling, then here you can find a peace of good music:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps5k33Z3zNI

    And with this emerald-theme here:

    http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/ChristmasTime?content=116282

and with the Background from this accompanying package:

    http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/ChristmasTime?content=70964

Your Desktop will become a real Christnas-World!!

One very little request would be, that Clem or someone else could make these nice icons from this package:

    http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/ChristmasTime?content=70964

available for MATE-Desktop, Cinnamon-Desktop and others. This would round up a real Christmas-Time…

Joyfull Christmas to you all!! Have a pleasant and joyfull Christmas inside the circle of your love ones.

    Greetings
    Mintkatze

  6. It is awsome. After endless trys to install Ubuntu 14.04 I always experienced input/output error.
The recent Mint installer works great. It automatically installs nouveau driver for nvidia graphics.
    Thank you so much!

  7. In terms of speed/performance, how does this release compare to Linux Mint KDE 17? When will new release of Mint KDE(an awesome distro) be made? I heard there is a “low-fat” settings to speed up KDE but have never tried it on Mint. If anybody has any insight into making Mint as fast as possible while using KDE please post, thanks!

  8. Very excited to start using this on my machine at work! Thanks Clem and team for all your good work.

Satisfied user since Linux Mint 13

  9. Playing safe, have installed 32bit MATE version ‘BrucesWay’ in a 15GiB ‘hidden’ partition on a fast Lexar ’32GB’ USB3 key and it’s looking good. Had to use Recovery mode StartUp and installation of NVIDIA-331 before adding and configuring my usual array of software including duckduckgo.com and printpdf etc for FireFox, with added vm.swappiness=5 in lieu of allocated swap file etc and haven’t yet found any serious glitches before facing Compiz challenges.
Later I’ll similarly try the other versions, including 64bit Cinnamon, before picking the best version to try out on a 120GB Samsung EVO SSD on a ‘new’ E5700 C2D rig in dual boot with Win7pro64.
(I continue to be impressed by LinuxMint which is so much less hassle than Windows.)

  10. Just installed a clean copy. I am having issues with popping noises on the audio. It pop’s about 2-3 times a minute.
Dell Dimension 9200. It wasn’t present on V17. Both 64bit and using same /home folder.
    Audio device is :
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)

Edit by Clem: It’s probably a kernel regression. Using the Update Manager -> View -> Kernels, try earlier or later kernels.

  11. Just completed a fresh install, however, having to revert back to 17 as Caja keeps freezing multiple times whilst browsing the Downloads directory. That aside LOVE this edition. Great to have the theme/colour improvements and the new standard font is really nice! Hope the Caja freezing issue is rectified asap!

  12. Tried several different kernels, older & latest all with the same error. Cinnamon install doesn’t have this issue.

  13. To say I am disappointed with this release would be an understatement.

Same issues I’ve always had every time I’ve tried Mint. Dreadful performance, cinnamon hogging CPU, package servers seem to be down more than they’re up.

  14. OttoTheBusDriver: Sorry to hear of your ongoing bad experience with Mint. By contrast I have only good experiences. Objectively speaking there is no performance problem with cinnamon, see http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux_mint17_desktops&num=2, earlier version of course so I hope this gets repeated on the current version sometime. I guess a lot of people are downloading mint right now. People on the IRC help channel might be able to help in diagnosing your problem. Have you tried MATE – which this blog is about ?

  15. Have been running 17.1 Mate live from a usb and have decided not to upgrade when the new update manager becomes available. I’ve been very happy with 17 for 6 months now and the new Rebecca themes are redundant I think. After all it is MINT not blueberry or strawberry or even chocolate!!! But of course it’s all about choice. Also, the design of the new folders does not look quite right, and as for the Noto Sans system font… This is not a complaint at all, just an aesthetic appraisal. I heartily thank Clem and his team for providing this wonderful OS to the world. MINT FOREVER!

  16. -My LMKDE17 hangs at shutdown/reboot, has this issue been resolved in this update? (ASUS p5Ql-pro, intel q9550, 6Gb ddr2, gtx260)
-How about a better search function in the forums ?

  17. Hi Simon – Apologies, just realised now that this is the MATE post, I plan on trying MATE as soon as I can get a stable connection to the package servers.

Will try the IRC channel if I’m unhappy with MATE.

    Thanks for your response.

  18. As for encrypted home directories (as far as I understand, an Ubuntu issue):
    – can be installed with linuxmint-17-mate-…bit-v2.iso
    – cannot be installed with linuxmint-17.1-mate-…bit-v2.iso because swap doesn’t work
    Right?

Whatsoever, thank you for the work!

  19. Whoops – Thwere is not Mint 17.1-v2 yet. Sorry for the copy&paste error. Another try:

As for encrypted home directories (as far as I understand, an Ubuntu issue):
    – can be installed with linuxmint-17-mate-…bit-v2.iso
    – cannot be installed with linuxmint-17.1-mate-…bit.iso because swap doesn’t work
    Right?

Again to the Mint-Team: thank you for the work.

  20. I have a problem with the installer
When i trying to install mint on my harddrive it hangs, every time it hang.
no errors it just stops , i still can work with the live cd.
It hangs on the last step of the installer.

    Grz Tony

  21. Running LM 17.1 MATE 64bit final in VirtualBox with 4 Gb RAM.

Including all those backgrounds from prior releases is so nice!
The /usr/share/backgrounds/cosmos files do not appear and do not
cycle like they did in a previous release. Might be missing file
    /usr/share/mate-background-properties/cosmos.xml from a previous
release (I was exploring “cosmos” on a remote machine a few days
back, before I knew 17.1 was out, and didn’t check which release).

The LibreOffice database does not work until you manually load
the libreoffice-base (1:4.2.7-0ubuntu1) package. This was also
broken in LM 17 release. Had newcomers to Linux that thought
it was not yet available, and they did not know that they could
fix it by searching within Synaptic to find the missing package.

Glad you fixed the crippled Workspace Switcher. Being limited
to the default 4 workspaces would seriously affect my workflow.

The improved Update Manager features are absolutely brilliant.
Will have to spend more time to understand dealing with kernels.

I will be spending a lot of time going back and forth between
LM 17.1 and LMDE installations. They are both fantastic.

  22. 17.1 installed and updated last night and working splendidly. Grateful for your efforts. In 2009 or thereabouts I had been frustrated with only what then felt like the over-conservative appearance of Gnome, but now after years of distro-hopping and Windows 8, and the polishing of the Mint-X theme, the Mate edition seems perfect to me – Dell or someone ought to be pushing it as a well-advertised alternative. With Openshot, Gimp and Libre Office in such fine shape it does seem mad that Windows 10 will get such attention next year. The only glitch I see may not even be one once I reacquaint myself with Compiz, in that the Mint Menu is often placed half an inch above it’s usual place, randomly, if the quite useful ‘Place Windows’ plugin is used. Will be replacing XP on family’s laptop soon now that confidence in Mint is full.

  23. Fantastic new artwork, great work, thanks Clément!
(franch locale works correctly, I reinstalled with the final release. i guess something went wrong during the download of the language packages with the RC)

    All the best!

  24. Anyway to get compiz to SAVE the settings when you quit ccsm?
Every time I reboot it goes back to defaults.

  25. hi zusammen,

after the current upadte in LinuxMint17.1 MATE-Desktop, I get this error-code in the Terminal:

In the update before that in said, that service-gdm needs to be enabled.

But: LinuxMint does not use gdm, it uses mdm. So why this enableing of service-gdm??

    This seems strange to me.

  26. hi 44 Hairybiker,

this happens, because the installation given here is not complete!
One needs to do a few more steps.

    1. OK, as first step, let’s begin with installing all necessary packages for compiz via Synaptic. So therefore, open Synaptic and search for compiz. Then it shows you several packages, which are needed to get compig running smoothly. Install them and close Synaptic.

    2. Then as second step go to Compiz-settings-manager and there in the left pane, you see “effects”.

There set emerald –replace and close Compiz.

OK, then I also discovered, that it does not work properly, so I first opened the Terminal and set emerald –replace

    3. Then in the third step go to your menue and there go to preferences -> deskop-preferences. There in the left pane, you see “window”. Click that and then in the right pane you see a dropdown-list. There enable compiz desctop effects. Then close these preferences.

Normally it should now work! If not, then reboot your machine and then it should come up.

Return back here, if it does not work for you.

    Greetings
    Mintkatze

  27. I downloaded MATE 32 and 64, plus Cinnamon 32 and 64 torrents with Transmission. I left Transmission running all day so others can download them too. So far, here are the statistics:

    MATE 32 – 13.69gb uploaded
    MATE 64 – 13.92gb uploaded
    Cinnamon 32 – 13.78gb uploaded
    Cinnamon 64 – 16.12gb uploaded

Cinnamon 64 seems to be the most popular. I prefer MATE 64 myself. But hey, I’ll leave Transmission with all 4 torrents running a while longer to support the cause.

  28. mate needs Composite-Effekte like xfce, hot corners and the same desktop workspaces from cinnamon. compiz has expo but is not the best solution when only 1 function is needed.
cinnamon needs only the Composite-Effekte from xfce.
the software manager needs to have outside the windows an install button (ubuntu and kubuntu has it!). why should a person open a new window to install a program and than go back to do the same with tenth of other applications?!
now to install a program are 3 clicks needed instead of 1. in addition is the waiting time every windows needs to be open and the fact that after 7-8 installations the software manager quit the job and must be restarted.
anyway mint team did always a great job and for me is the best solution in the linux world!

  29. Just got again this error-message in the current system-update from yesterday.

Now I checked my var log and here is the current output:

  30. I use top panel with the traditional ‘Menu Bar’ (i also use mintMenu at the bottom panel because i like the search bar).
When i select a bookmarked directory from Places it tooks 3-4 sec to load Caja.
But when i change Preferred Applications->System->File Manager
from ‘File Manager’ to ‘Caja’ it loads immediately.
So what’s the difference between ‘File Manager’ and ‘Caja’?

Thanks, a satisfied user since 13 Mate.

  31. Awesome update using the Update Manager. Thank you so much!

I went from LM17.0 MATE to LM 17.1 MATE flawlessly. Looks better thjan before and everything is running fine.

  32. I have used mint sense mint 8 release at that time I had to have a
copy of windows on the hard drive to be able to hook up to Road runner
I am happy mint know hooks up to Time warner road runner cable by its
self. Thanks. one thing mint could use is an unistaller, so when you
have more than one linux OS. on the same hard drive and a new version
of Mint comes out you can uninstall the old version and install the new
one.Though I am running mint 14.1 64 bit in my main computer, I have
run mint 17.1 on my laptop and as usual mint is still the best Operating system Available today.

  33. My Mint torrent upload has been running a few days now. Here are the latest statistics:

    MATE 32 – 38.56gb uploaded
    MATE 64 – 38.75gb uploaded
    Cinnamon 32 – 39.824gb uploaded
    Cinnamon 64 – 47.76gb uploaded

I still have more than 10 peers connected for each of these, so I’ll leave the Transmission torrents running a few more days.

  34. Dear Clem. I did as you suggested me and everything works flawless! I’m still a happy user LM mate 17.1. Thanks a lot for your big effort on this project. Best Regards and Merry Christmas!

Edit by Clem: Thanks, merry Christmas to you too 🙂

  35. Kudos on the release of Rebecca, Mint Team! I’ve been hoping and praying that you guys would go to an LTS-only release system for a long time, and it looks like you’ve delivered in spades! Only issues I’ve encountered so far involve my Intel video while using Compiz and a rather interesting glitch after installing KDE that would load Screen Locker instead of the Monitors utility. I’m sure you guys are already workin’ on these issues, so I’m not worried about it. Overall, Rebecca is fast, responsive, and stable, even on a six year old dual core notebook, and I couldn’t be happier. Thanks for the hard work, guys!

  36. Almost everything is working fine. Very nice. The only problem is that Driver Manager still does not see my nvidia geforce 840M graphics card in my Dell Inspiron 5000 series

  37. Just upgraded three intel i5 NUCs in various configs – 2 with multiple displays, one with dissimilar ones. Absolutely no issues seen so far. Perfect!
I respect Clem and crew’s attitude towards conservatism re “don’t fix what ain’t broke” as a (pretty serious ring-0 and embedded) coder myself – he’s telling you like it is. (hint, don’t close your browser because you’ll have to link-click a couple things along the way).

I accepted all the “replace this modded script” queries. Only one machine tossed me a couple warnings, as I’d put Virtual Box into it outside the normal synaptic way, by brute force, and it couldn’t verify Oracle’s key. That one is asking me to download Oracle’s latest junk. So be it. (it was already later version than what is default in software manager, but hey.)

It worked a charm. Got the “mint update” in update manager, did that, then got a bunch of new updates (instead of the window just closing as it used to do).
Reboot (not a biggie on a NUC with SSD – my spinners are mounted over /home).
    Then upgrade.
    Reboot.
Then move to the latest recommended kernel.
    Reboot.
Turn on compiz, add another row to the windows.
    Reboot.
It all works perfectly for me. I’ve not gotten to the other odd machines around here already running Mint 17 (towers), but I will, this was a joy and works great. These power data acquisition (via oddball hardware, some I built here), web serving, databases and uP dev for a fusion lab I run. I admit to a little trepidation and only upgraded one of the main boxen at first, but then…going to do them all now – this is sawweeeeet! Thanks Clem and team – I suppose I should put a check in the mail now. This rocks! Next time the funders come around, there will be a nice dog and pony show for them (other than the other cool things in the lab here).
VB tosses you some updates after, no biggie, and things like win7 and older linuxes work fine…just do as it requests around adding the new extensions etc. These machines were already heavily customized with special apps etc, some of which I wrote for them – no issues whatsoever. Everything just works as it did (and should).

    Fantastic work, people!

  38. 17.1 Mate is AWESOME!!! This was the smoothest upgrade (from 17) yet! I’ve got my spinning hexagon back that I haven’t had working right since about Mint 14! And the MDM themes are really nice! Y’all obviously put a lot of work into this and I want you to know you are very, very appreciated. This was really something because I had my Mint 17 very heavily customized and loaded up with all kinds of weird apps from KDE and all over the place and custom-compiled packages that I’d built myself and all kinds of weird finicky hardware and stuff. I’ve been using Linux since about 1995 and a lot of distros over the years and I fully expected the upgrade to totally barf and hose it up. But it didn’t!!!
I haven’t tested everything but this is freaking amazing!!!! Thank you!!!

  39. Very nice work Clem and Mint team!
The upgrade went fine, and this release looks more stable and responsive than LM17… Congrats!

However after I tried “suspend”, the system could not “resume” (The screen came up with blotches).
    I use MATE 64 bit.

    System: Desktop, with Kernel: 3.16.0-25-generic
    Distro: Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca
Mobo: ASUSTeK model: M3A version: Rev 1.xx
CPU: Dual core AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+
GPU: NVIDIA G84 [GeForce 8600 GT]

  40. Solved It!

I think the problem @61 had to do with the kernel 3.16.0-25-generic
When I tried the recommended kernel (3.13.0-37-generic)
there were no problem with “resume”…

  41. Upgrade from Qiana to Rebecca by update manager went without any problem. The Noto fonts are great ! Text looks much better. Thanks to all developers for this fantastic operating system !

  42. Discovered 17.1 MATE upgrade hidden in Update Manager’s Edit menu today; upgrade proceeded without drama (just as I like it). No negatives have been observed so far. Everything looks the same including my particular blue theme. Newly recommended kernel -37 installed ok, but I haven’t rebooted yet to load it.

Thanks for making the transition so easy and free of data and configuration risk.

  43. Just finished the install of 17.1 MATE, worked out the nvidia freezing issue, I used nouveau.noaccel=1 on the command line, installed and the very first thing after the restart was to change the driver to 304 – works perfectly.

Doing upgrades but so so far so good, like the extra themes and options but still rock solid like mint is always.

    Well done.

  44. I installed the latest Mint 17.1 on a 6 yr old Compaq laptop, x2 core AMD, Nvidia. Everything works great. No problems with installation.

  45. Thanks Mint Team. I tried LM17.1 MATE 32 and 64bit usb sticks on my Dell laptop M5040. It seemed a little sluggish compared to LM17. It’ll probably be OK on install. However, they worked fine on my Acer M3920 desktop. I won’t be upgrading till I need to as LM17 works fine for me.

  46. Hi Mint Team!

I’ve just noticed a strange behaviour of “USB Image Writer” …
While trying to burn an ISO image everything on the Desktop freezes, and there is no Progress Bar indication until the burn is finished!
    This happens every time!

I use LM 17.1 64bit on a Laptop Asus with an Intel Chipset
    Has anybody else experienced this?

  47. A would also add to @68: LM 17.1 64bit MATE
Everything else seems to work fine! And I’m sure those bugs will be fixed in time…

    Thanks in advance!

  48. Hi everyone,
I want to upgrade from LinuxMint 14 Mate to LinuxMint 17.1 Mate,
    what can I do Please?
    Thank you very much
    Yours sincerely.

  49. thanks linuxmint team

    i have this KERNEL:3.13.0.24(3.13.9) installed

but the tool tells me that the 3.13.0.37 is raccomandated…

    what do you think?

  50. @Brahim re #70:
    In a terminal, I’d try :

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

but I’m not sure it’ll work from that far than Mint 14.

  51. Trying to install linuxmint-17.1-mate-64bit.iso
No defualt UI or Kernel to select what to do?

Loves Mint KDE but maybe newer times are here

  52. I just upgraded and rebooted to 17.1 from 17.0. Upon using this new version, I notice a lag in opening apps from the Mint Menu. Whereas on qiana it took a second to start, say, the file manager, it now takes 2-3 seconds on rebecca. I wonder what’s causing the slowdown and what I can do to remedy it.

BTW, thanks for the new version. I really appreciate all the work you put into this project. I love LM, and I can’t imagine going to a different distro. I hope to fix the lag issue so that I can more thoroughly enjoy LM!

  53. I have installed the Mate desktop, and it looks very good indeed. I am having a few problems but the main one is, when I open a sound file, mp3, or wav etc, I have configured VLC to open it. If I let the sound file play to the end it’s OK, but if I pause or stop before the end, Caja freezes, and I have to wait while the ‘force quit’ appears.

  54. @Garry: Hi!

I encounter exactly the same issue with Caja, and not only with VLC but also with Videos (Totem media player), even if the song reaches the end. Caja freezes very often, after the upgrade to 17.1 and I have to “force quit” it.

I assume this is a very difficult bug to find!

  55. Hello Vassilis,
I think I’ve sussed it? I notice that when the cursor hovers over a sound file, the sound file gives an audible preview. I went into control centre, file management, preview, and where it says ‘preview sound files,’ I set it to ‘never.’ It seems OK now.

  56. I’d like to add that…

Caja also produces constantly many thumbnails under ~/.cache/thumbnails/fail directory each time, while trying to preview non pre-viewable files like *.mp3. This causes unnecessary fill of disk space…

I don’t know how to prevent this!

  57. I had to install an Nvidia graphics card to get Mate 17.1 to install, but it is now looking very good. My onboard video did not work:

Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Sumo [Radeon HD 6410D]
