  1. Downloaded yesterday for heanet mirrors, tried it in VBOX.
First time ,installer crashed a few times, then after a restart,i managed to install it .
Overall stable and well put ,kernel is 3.8,i upgraded to 3.9 without any issues,KDE is stable and almost every task performed well.
I tried before Netrunner and i would like to ask Clem if some details from them could merge with Mint KDE.
The My computer icon from Netrunner desktop gives a brief but complete description of your computer(i mean all hardware and software, driver info),best i´ve ever seen in Linux DE.
Could Mint KDE have it included?

Edit by Clem: Yes, we can certainly consider it.

  2. (“The My computer icon from Netrunner desktop gives a brief but complete description of your computer(i mean all hardware and software, driver info),best i´ve ever seen in Linux DE.
Could Mint KDE have it included?”) —

I second this request; it would make a fantastic addition to all Linux Mint desktops.

  3. Once Again…. Congratulations to the Linux Mint Team. I’ve testing yesterday and found it very stable, although it made her wish….. Congratulations Linux Mint Team !!!!

  4. I am just installing i Swedish location. Seems to work fine but:
The installation window “Who are you” has two lines in English.
    “If more than one person……”
    “Enter the same password…..”
    Slide-show is in pure English

  5. Congratulations with this new KDE release of Mint. I have Mint 14 with KDE 4.10.4 and it’s incredible stable! I hope 15 RC is also, but I wait for the final release.

  6. I have installed it on my Samsung NP550 (nvidia), the stability rocks ! But I would like to see more polish in theme & icons. As the LM-14 KDE looked like more polished by Blue Systems.. I think polish & look is only missing part of the release.

Looking ahead for positive changes. (Color scheme can be Oxygen Molecule).

    Great efforts from the team.

  7. Installed without any problems. Seems to run very good. 🙂 I’m in love with Mint:s program-source selector. It’s really, really GREAT!
    Thank you, Mint developers!

  8. Congratulations!
I’ll wait for the stable release, because I’ll try to find some way to update my current LM14 instead of “format and install” again.

  9. Does this release include the updated 3.8.0-25 Linux kernel or the default (Raring) 3.8.0-19 kernel which has been proven to cause problems? Just wondering before I download.

  10. I’m trying to change the font from application appearance, but after I click default, I got this uggly system font..it still the same with mint13 kde I think,(the “default” font isn’t great)
imo, solydk (previously unofficial lmde kde) have this setting right..everytime I mess with my font setting, the default setting is already good looking..

  11. Please take a look at Chakra Linux.
Not nearly as stable as Mint, but the got the aspect thing right. The KMint version looks too vanilla. Nothing to differentiate.

  12. Hats off to the Linux Mint team for another amazing release on the way!

My only concern with the KDE and XFCE editions moving forward is that, because they are released about two months after the upstream Ubuntu release that they are based on, they will only receive seven months of support for Ubuntu updates except for LTS releases.

  13. Installing on all my PCs.

    1) I use the classic menu on KDE, and the menu items are not in A-Z order.

    2) In driver manager, it would be nice to have some indication of background activity before the second screen with the drivers appears. The driver screen does not give enough information – what is the difference between the ‘nvidia-310 (recommended) and the ‘nvidia-310-updates? Tyhat is the same info as provided in the past.

That is the best I can do to find fault with the RC – merci beaucoup Clem and the Mint team.

  14. nVidia driver install bug?

The driver is installed as well as the icon for the NVIDIA X Server Settings.

Clicking on the icon (two were placed in different places) did nothing. On checking with Synaptic Package Manager (SPM), the program itself was NOT installed. I installed it via SPM and the icons now work as expected.

  15. Downloading it… but now I prefer NETRUNNER improvements.

Edit by Clem: Well that’s great, we work very closely with Netrunner 🙂 Let us know which features/improvements you’d like to see in Mint. Netrunner is more refined, Mint is more vanilla when it comes to KDE, but if there are things you want us to consider, please give us precise feedback.

  16. How long after a RC does it usually take to drop the final release? Also, if we’re on the RC, will it be relatively easy to upgrade to the final release once it comes out? Thanks

Edit by Clem: Yes. The delay depends on the feedback.

  17. Anyone see if kde-network-manager is more stable in this version ratha then disconnecting randomly asking for network password always and never connecting till reboot??????? hada switch to wicd then that failed using opensuse till fixed hoping lm15 fixes this:) let me know guys im downloading os as we speak hoping to install if fixed nvidia gpu n broadcom wireless card

  18. Not sure if this has already been addressed, but when I installed from the RC ISO on the mirrors last Saturday btrfs-tools was missing from the ISO and I had to grab it with apt-get in order to install my btrfs partition. Hopefully you can properly include the package in the final release. Thanks for the great work, loving the KDE experience!

  19. First of all this release looks amazing. I feel this is a more pure implementation of KDE than OpenSUSE.

I had the UEFI booting issues. I should have read the release notes. I will learn. Anyway boot-repair fixed the problem for me with ease. I really wish it came as standard.

However I am having issues with catalyst drivers. I am using the driver-manager, however neither of the proprietary drivers are installing properly. I do not have the catalyst control centre install.

Thanks Clem and team. I will look where to file a bug report.

  20. I can’t open the Touchpad Management. There only comes a Synaptic Activity Management window, but nothing is seen about the touchpad.

  21. Hi,
i installed this RC on VBOX machine to test it, when using synaptic i was unable to enter username and password of my proxy in settings.
Thank you for you hard work Clem and the team, keep up the good work !

  22. Using Dolphin as file manager seems to have cured the problem I had with both Nemo and Nautilus freezing when trying to view thumbnails. Only bug I have found is “Cannot find input plugin for MRL ” when trying to play video from my server.

  23. I installed this version and the operating time is fantastic. Just one note: do not update the language pack. Default is English, but indicated that the country is Spain. I imagine it will be momentary and that the final version will be solved. Great job and great environment. I love Linux Mint.

  24. Mint KDE looks really promising! I had one problem: I could’nt install any language via the system settings, and despite choosing the german language for installation, after a while the language changed back to english. Also, as it is often with linux mint, flashplugin isn’t up to date, while in ubuntu it is.

  25. Firefox downloads are not in the Download folder. I can open downloads without a problem from within the Firefox download manager so they are in there somewhere and right clicking on the downloaded file and selecting Open Folder takes me to my download folder in Home as I would expect. Files are not there.

Edit by Fred : This is the normal FF behaviour.

If the filetype is not set to be automatically opened, then FF ask you either to open it or to save it -> it goes in the download folder.

If the filetype is set to be automatically opened (like tar.gz archive for instance) : the file is downloaded in /tmp, then opened.

So, if you want to save a .tar.gz archive in your download foler you must right click on the file, and choose ‘Save link as’ option.

  26. @24 tux-sven : Screen savers are in ´display and monitor´ in ´settings´ menu and from there you can switch it on. Even there is some way to enable the animated wallpapers, perhaps by installing plasma-wallpapers-addon, can´nt confirm this one as I didn´t try it.

  27. #31 bobby:

Thanks, now I finally got it. In Swedish it was “Bildskärm” (=Screen) under the heading “Hårdvara” (=HW) 🙂

  28. I have problems installing my HP network printer. It is not as easy as it is in the MATE-release… 🙁
In MATE the printer installation program finds the network printer automatic, but not here. It is still problems, even when I give the IP-address manually.

  29. I would love to do some informal testing, but this must be a *VERY* popular d/l today. Any of the US mirrors working well for you?

  30. Been trying this out since last night and it’s been pretty stable. I had System Settings crash on me one time, but it hasn’t done it since.

Clem and gang, great work! 😀

  31. great RC! very stable and cool and without visible bugs.
one thing though – the MDM login manager uses the DMZ White cursor theme while the system uses Oxygen White by default. is there a way to change the cursor theme for MDM? tnx.

  32. I just want to see the “Classical Mint Menu” in KDE version.
Anyway thanks for the good work.

  33. This need to be confirmed but im pretty shure that i had clicked on the auto-login option during the install but it dont. after reboot (if this is the biggest problem…. Im happy with Kde-mint15)

p.s during the install’s show tour. It say ‘java’ and ‘safe’ on the same line :S lol.

  34. I have been using Cinnamon 15 with KDE installed while waiting patiently for this release so am very happy to have this finally installed thankyou.I installed the 64 bit and all is running smoothly so far except the only hot corner working is the top left, please fix as I rely on the hot corners a lot for speedy work flow. Thanks

Edit by Fred : not sure you try this out but, you can configure hot corner here : systemsettings -> workspace behaviour -> screen edges

  35. about my font earlier, now I realize that there’s no .fonts.conf on ~/
I copy .fonts.conf from my Solydk partition and the font is looking good 😀
    Another thing:
lm-sensors not installed (easy to install),
apturl-kde cannot be upgraded (think its related to apt preferences),
volume scroll on systray by 15%, not 5% (any help on this? I still prefer 5% each scroll)

  36. I am also having the same problem as @30 Jerry stated. Some files Firefox shows correctly, but some it does not show in download folder e.g. I was trying to download google chrome from google, but firefox is not showing it in download folder. when I try to open the file from firefox, downloads, it seems it does not show my original download folder at home.

what happened to the icon theme. In Mint-14 kde icons (specially folders etc.) were looked so good that one other gnome distros copied that oxygen theme there and the same is not in Mint 15.

  37. Clem
kudos for a fine RC 🙂
so far i could only find one flaw: apt-xapian-index is missing.

Edit by Fred : will be added. Thanks.

  38. Mucking with partitions makes me queasy… are there no plans to include a mint4win program in the final release of this KDE edition of Olivia? Or can I download the mint4win standalone program, and will it work with the KDE version?

  39. After installing the propriatary software, The nvidia X server settings menu appear under setting but file is missing.

    :~ > sudo ./usr/bin/nvidia-settings
    sudo: ./usr/bin/nvidia-settings: command not found

  40. @45 Bobby, make sure that the file extension you are downloading is set to download or ask by default. I noticed .deb was set to automatically install and had to change that so it would ask instead.

  41. I installed hplip-gui and from HP-Toolbox I was able to connect the LAN-printer to my computer in an understandable way. And i works!! 😀
The other way, without HP Toolbox, was too complicated compared to the Main Edition.

  42. @49 Aaron : I already set the firefox ‘ask where to save’, but still as you said rightly it is happening only with .deb files, firefox is not saving them to download folder. Otherwise, it is downloading other files in the download folder, but one has to choose, ask where to save, first.

the other problem is when I open the download manager in firefox, and right click and select the ‘open the containing folder’, it is not opening the same, and ask to choose through which programme it would be open. Perhaps one need to specify dolphin manually, just trying if somehow I can solve it.

  43. @53 Aaron : Yeh! I also found the solutions.
    1. Regarding as I said by right clicking firefox not opening the download folder. Here, dolphin, needs to be entered manually, once, and ticking the option always remember the choice. When firefox ask to choose the programme, one should go to “root”, “usr” and then “bin” and from there select dolphin (screw type of icon) and it will be done. Now it will open the download folder.

    2. Regarding .deb files trying to install automatically, in firefox go to – edit, preferences and the applications-tab and from there in front of the .deb file choose “save” and it will be done. Hope it may be of some use to others.

  44. Cannot turn off Bluetooth by clicking on the icon and selecting Bluetooth off. Only way to turn off is to go into configuration and take the tick out of Enable KDE Bluetooth Integration. Even then I’m not sure if it is off or the icon simply removed from task bar.

Keyboard shortcut Fn-F5 only turns off the wifi and not the Bluetooth on my Lenovo X200.

And now when I type Bluetooth into application menu and go to turn the Bluetooth on again it tells me there is no Bluetooth adapter installed.

  45. One very annoying bug is the fact that sound for my usb logitech headset does not work. I have been searching frantically around the webs for a solution, but have not been able to find one. Help.

  46. Any chance of LMDE-KDE? I love KDE, but just can’t ditch the stability and reliability of LMDE. Just installing it from the repos doesn’t look as pretty as Mint KDE.

…It can be imitated of course, but an edition already set up like that would be amazing.

Thanks Mint Team – you guys are total heroes 😀

  47. Anybody using 64-bit live USB (UnetBootIn) to access Yahoo Mail? I think there is some heavy JavaScript that chokes FF.

  48. One problem with propertiary radeon drivers. When using fglrx-updates the amd catalyst control center is not accessible.(using the old fglrx gets me the unsupported hardware banner bug which was solved by the update) Catalyst control gets uninstalled when using the fglrx updated version. The generic display manager does not let me use my two screens but both monitors have a cloned view only. Really bad bug. Fix this please and keep up the good work

  49. Is there any way I could export all settings from “System Settings” to reimport them in the new version? Apart from copying directories?

  50. Several problems here: I can’t change the language to German, although i downloaded the DE packs i can’t switch to ANY other language. The clock is driving me crazy: It always changes back to UTC, therefore showing the wrong time AND messing up my time when i change my HD back to the one with Windows 7 installed. I always have to re-set the BIOS clock via Windows 7 internet time correction. This is really killing me ! Other than that, i really love the KDE version. Tried MATE already, but i like KDE better.

  51. Guys – How is the MDM integration with KDE, I did not like KDM or LightDM much that were available earlier for KDE versions. Is the lock screen also replaced with new one?

Edit by Fred : the lock screen didn’t change. There’s a button to unlock and another one to switch the user, just like before.

Basically MDM offers same functionnality as KDM, with one exception : imagine you’re logged in as ‘user’. You start the switching procedure, using the “Start new session” button. That’s lock your current session and display MDM. If you login as ‘user’ again, you have to type your password again to unlock your session. Whereas with KDM, it unlock your session automatically as you just entered your password through it.

  52. The clock UTC issue should really be fixed. Setting it via ntp doesn’t work via kde and it keep switching to utc.

  53. I’ve upgraded from LM 14 KDE 32 bit to LM 15 KDE 64 bit, by reinstalling the whole system and keeping the contents of the home directory only. (I wanted to backup the list of installed software, but only after reinstall did I realise that the backup manager didn’t save anything to the folder I specified.)

Here are a few problems that I haven’t been able to solve:
    – in Firefox and Thunderbird, the font size of menus, dialogues etc. are larger than before and I can’t lower them
    – in KOrganizer and the calendar in the lower right corner (summoned by clicking on the clock), the contents of my Google Calendar no longer appears and I can’t select the local calendar either in KOrganizer (for this, I can’t add any new events); it doesn’t matter whether I readd my Google Calendar in the options, nothing changes
    – in Freeplane (a Java program), the content of the mind map becomes visually distorted when scrolling horizontally (I’m using OpenJDK and so was I before the upgrade)

Other than these issues, I’m very satisfied with this release so far. But any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

  54. Plasma-netbook missing.

I found a problem with activities. If you make a new activity with the Newspaper Layout or the Search and Launch it doesn’t work. Even if you just right click on the desktop and change the Default Desktop to Search and Launch or Newspaper Layout it won’t change. I also found the solution. I opened synaptic and noticed the plasma-netbook package is not installed. Once I installed it everything worked. So include plasma-netbook by default in the final release. Thanks.

  55. @Team – I can confirm what “border” (comment #48) states. When installing the closed source Nvidia driver via the “Driver manager” , the “nvidia-settings” package (for that driver version) is not installed with the driver as it is in Linux Mint 15/Cinnamon and MATE editions and has been in the past.

    Otherwise, a fine RC.

  56. I have two monitors and have just installed Linux Mint. At the moment Linux Mint is showing on both monitors. How do I get it to show up on one monitor only?

  57. No sound with HeadPhones on my HP LapTop. HP DV 6

  58. When I start up the Photos activity, I am prompted to start a couple of applications, but after agreeing they do not start. Running under VBox

  59. Dear Clem,

I’ve tried a few times to install LM15 KDE 64-bit in Virtualbox, it always fails with the following error (taken from /var/log/installer/debug when running ‘ubiquity -d’):

    debconf (developer): 0
    Jun 30 13:11:53 debconf (filter): <– PROGRESS INFO ubiquity/install/apt_info

debconf (developer): 1 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Any ideas? I can’t get the courage to try a live install if I can’t get it to work in a safe environment :).

  60. Oops, never mind my above comment. It failed because of lack of free space on “/”. I’ll file a bug report for ubiquity when doing a guided install using the whole disk – on an 8GB virtual disk with 4GB of virtual RAM, it makes a 4GB swap, leaving too little for the main partition.

  61. Can we update the kernel to 3.9.8? Any benefits/downsides to doing that?

Edit by Clem: You can use mainstream 3.9.x but you might have to upgrade all your DKMS modules if you do that (virtualbox, nvidia, fglrx..etc).

  62. Kernel updates depends on the upstream, and not on the Linux Mint team :D. So if the upstream (Ubuntu) uses the 3.8 kernel, all the other derivatives will stay with it. (but not have to, of course :D)

  63. Anybody have an ETA on the official release on this thing? I can’t wait to upgrade from Nadia.

@Marlon, I too love opensuse. If not for the fact I can’t play back DVDs I would use it almost exclusively. Evergreen 13.1 is going to be great!

  64. Hi,
Thanks for this release, I have some problems:
    1) The installer failed to install grub for me, I think it thought my laptop has efi and it doesn’t, the error message I got is:
“the ‘grub-efi’ package failed to install to /target/. Without the GRUB boot loader, the installed system will not boot.”

I booted to the installed system using another bootloader on my external hard drive.

    2) Something wrong with the updates, maybe related to the first problem, I couldn’t update using the Update Manager, nor using the command line, I get:

    Reading package lists… Error!
E: Unable to parse package file /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_raring_universe_i18n_Translation-en (1)
    E: Problem opening /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_raring-updates_main_binary-amd64_Packages

  65. Thanks for working on the RC for Linux Mint KDE 15 so soon. I for one really appreciate the love you guys are giving to my preferred bloated desktop environment. :] So thanks again. I’m running what must be 14 right now, and I’m loving it. So thank you to the team again for working on the KDE version so soon. I remember in the past it used to take a while to get a KDE release and usually was one behind gnome or other GTK based releases. This is awesome. My choice over Kubuntu by far. Used to use both PCLINUXOS, Slackware, Mandrake, and others, but Mint has become so polished and the prebuilt package repos contain everything I need and then some. Just wanted to say thanks for sharing your work on this amazing distro.

  66. Cannot compile c programs using gcc even stdio is found missing same bug was there in mint 14 kde . the error is as follows :

“fatal error: stdio.h: No such file or directory
    compilation terminated.

  67. I can install netflix-desktop with no issues but it’s not working in this version of Mint. I get audio but no video. It’s just this KDE version, works fine in Olivia Cinnamon.

  68. Thank so much for such a distribution! I dont use it as my main operating system, but it helped my a lot by saving crashed pc’s etc. I use it like a live cd cos its fast, good working and i like it!!
