Latest development:

Development is a lot of fun and it doesn’t take much to get started. If you’re tempted to join the team, don’t hesitate to follow our development on http://github.com/linuxmint and come and chat with the developers at #linuxmint-dev (irc.spotchat.org).

In Linux Mint 15 Olivia, Cinnamon won’t only handle the desktop, the file browsing and the window manager, but also the screensaver and the control center. This will provide better integration and a better user experience.

All your settings will be in one place and they will all be relevant to your Cinnamon desktop:

The screensaver is also tightly integrated with Cinnamon and MDM. You can switch users (like you did with GNOME Screensaver) and you can also set an away message for people to see when you’re not there.

This message is visible on your screen while you’re away.

It’s a very simple feature which was primarily designed for companies where employees might be looking for each others and the ability to set away messages might prove useful.

Of course it’s configurable. You can turn it off altogether and you can set a default away message, which then appears on your screen when the computer locks itself automatically or when you don’t enter any message.

The artwork and layout of the screensaver itself are not final.

The goal of these two projects (known on github as “cinnamon-screensaver” and “cinnamon-control-center”), within the scope of Cinnamon 1.8 and Linux Mint 15 is to replace GNOME components which no longer fit well within Cinnamon, to provide a more coherent desktop and to improve its level of integration. Of course once we’re in control of their maintenance we also take the opportunity to innovate and enlarge the scope of the Cinnamon project. With that in mind, towards Cinnamon 2.0 and Linux Mint 16, these projects will continue to be developed, and they will gain new features. The screensaver for instance isn’t currently a “screensaver”, since all it does is locking the screen. We’re experimenting with webkit (we’ll talk more about this and MDM in a future blog post) and we’ll be looking at the possibility to make Cinnamon Screensaver compatible with screensavers written in HTML5.

News and summary:

  • The new LMDE ISOs passed QA and were released yesterday. They were initially planned for January but time was spent on improving the installer, adding plymouth and DDM and we ran into a few issues with networking and name resolution which had to be fixed prior to the RC. Our apologies for the delay.
  • About 2/3 of the features planned for Linux Mint 15 were implemented. The team is extremely focused at the moment and the development is going really well. MATE 1.6 and Cinnamon 1.8 will be released at least a month before Linux Mint 15 to ensure we have time to properly test and integrate all these new features.
  • Many thanks to our sponsors, partners, donors and all the people who support us and allow us to work on Linux Mint.

  1. Would be so good to be able to.. disable ALL screensaving and screen turnoffs in Cinnamon, the screen blanking after the default 10 minutes drives me nuts and the inhibit applet doesn’t do the trick 🙂

Don’t know if it can make it for Mint 15 or if it requires some deep Gnome hacking..

  2. My most sincere Congratulations to Clem and the Great Linux Mint Team. It will be a great launch of Linux Mint 15, I am waiting anxiously, like the images.iso final of Linux Mint Debian Edition with Cinnamon and Mate. Yes, I would like to see an official version of Linux Mint Debian Edition with KDE and the return to the official version with XFCE. There are some rumors on the Internet, they say that you are planning this versions. It is true ???? Best Regards.-

  3. i have finally made the switch from windows xp to mint 14 a few days ago and so far so good
congratulation on a Very good OS

one thing though annoys me badly , in partition view in nemo I can’t see the size of partition and the amount of free space even if I chose detail view, I have to chose probities to get that information, and system monitor have a better implementation of this information than windows? so can this be added please if it’s not too hard I mean

  4. @RTS INFORMATIQUE:

To disable the screen blanking after ten minutes just make a script running at boot time with these commands:

    xset -dpms
    xset s noblank
    xset s off

  5. It’s great to see how quickly Cinnamon is being developed! The improvements in Cinnamon 1.8 look amazing! Having everything in the control center will make things much easier for new users. It is also great seeing features we have all enjoyed making their way back into the desktop environment.

Yesterday I tried re-installing Mint 14.1 x64 back on my HP laptop. Originally I had major problems with the ATI hybrid graphics, so much so that the operating system was not usable. After the install I applied all of the available updates including the newer kernel. Much to my surprise, the laptop is working perfectly!

I have had Mint 14.1 installed on my desktop and love it and it is great to finally be able to use it on my laptop! I could not believe that the open source drivers work so well at this point in time.

I am really looking forward to Mint 15 and Cinnamon 1.8! Thanks for all of the hard work!

  6. I recently made a switch from Ubuntu to Linux Mint 13 XFCE a few weeks ago and could not be more satisfied and in addition relieved that their is a committed and focused community to support the distribution for those that want a seamless desktop environment for many years to come.

  7. Thanks Clem for this preview. Out of curiosity, Arch currently has Cinnamon version 1.7.1 in their official repos. Arch is “bleeding edge,” but they usually put the latest officially released software in their repos (latest gnome 3.6, latest kde 4.10, latest firefox 19, etc). However, it was my understanding that odd numbered Cinnamon releases (1.5, 1.7, etc) were more like development versions and the even numbered ones (1.6, 1.8, etc) were the stable versions. Obviously Arch will be Arch (and it likes the latest stuff), but is my understanding correct that 1.7 is more like a development release leading up to 1.8 rather than its own release?

Edit by Clem: Absolutely. 1.7.1 is basically a convenience development tag we put there for the development team and to be able to test Cinnamon 1.7 (which as you said is the unstable branch leading towards 1.8) within a Linux Mint 15 ALPHA context. Neither Mint 15 ALPHA nor Cinnamon 1.7 are publicly released and they’re both unstable. Some of the features in Cinnamon 1.7.1 or git latest are not even finished yet, certainly not localized and not fully tested. You can give 1.7.x a try but only as a preview of the upcoming 1.8… for your main computer stick to Cinnamon 1.6.7.

  8. Congrats Mint team! It’s nice to see a real OS making some money! I hope your lives are being nicely supplemented for your labors! For my part I’m still installing mint xfce edition all over the greater northwest area.

  9. Nice! I love Linux Mint with Cinnamon and am currently running Mint 14 with Cinnamon with the Faience theme, and the Ambiance window and GTK themes from Ubuntu along with the oxymentary icon theme from Mint KDE.

I find that Cinnamon looks amazing and is very tweakable in addition to performing well. Personally, I think that being able to set an away message on your lock screen is a great idea for businesses. It really would help people know where people are when they’re away from their desk for sure.

I also like how the default color scheme of Cinnamon goes so well with Steam. Hell, I wish Valve would make or approve a Steam-based Window/GTK theme, and maybe even a Steam-themed Cinnamon theme. That said, with the Ambiance window/gtk theme and a darker grey Cinnamon theme, my Cinnamon desktop looks very steam-like already.

  10. Great work, hope cinnamon becomes bug free and more optimized and polished. Wish it to overtake gnome3 desktop and make gnome developers understand why they should listen to the public.

  11. I’ve been running the Cinnamon nightly PPA for some time now and the latest Cinnamon builds (currently 1.7.*) and Nemo builds are coming along really well. Surprisingly stable for “cutting edge” builds. Sure, I get the occasional glitch now and then like the disappearing Cinnamon Control Center several builds back when it was just being integrated but other than that, it’s been a real pleasure running the latest builds. Nicely done, Clem and team.

  12. I would like to make a donation but I don’t want to use Paypal. It would be great if you guys had a bank account details (IBAN/BIC) so that one could simply transfer it.

  13. I am so happy i found this Linux mint, i am saving for laptop (hope this year will buy it) and Linux Mint will be on it. Windows, goodbye forewer. Thank you, developers,God bless you.

  14. Hi,

I have completed 2.5 years with mint and have been satisfied, even delighted by this exquisite OS. waiting for Olivia and Cinnamon 1.8.. really Cinnamon is the best thing to happen to Mint.

I switched from windows to Ubuntu and then to mint and have been well taken care of in your forums, community and chats.

Thanks and keep up the great work
