  1. yes!!!! I have loved the LXDE versions thus far, question, will there be an LXDE 64 version, cd and dvd versions?? Just out of curiousity. I realize it’s a lot to ask for but it would be very nice. Love mint 9 thus far things are working perfectly for me thus far, I can’t wait till companies actually start to support linux aswell, so we can spend more time perfecting the OS itself instead of spending so much time getting hardware, etc. compatability.

  2. Tried Live USB. No LXDE (or anything from Mint 9) for me. Wireless is not working on my Asus Eee 1000H. Will have to stick to Mint 8 Helena.

  3. Good to know it’s proceeding well. I’m looking forward to the final version of this one to install in my brother’s older machines. Any idea when the final version will be completed?

  4. omg
    i this looks awesome!
    doesnt look any different than the main edition but like 40958309583x faster

  5. This looks interesting will certainly be trying it out shortly

    Is there any sign of the Splash screen resolution inherited from Ubuntu Lucid being sorted any time soon as I am having the same issue with Mint 9 GNOME after installing Nvidia driver

    Thanks for your continued Hard Work let us all hope Canonical get their act together with Lucid and then it will be Happy Days for all 🙂

  6. LinuxMint really is going from strength to strength as this looks like what netbooks have really been waiting for, faster and more instantly usable than cut-down WinXP or Win7, with multiple virtual desktops available from what’s now called a ‘Desktop Pager’ rather than a ‘Workspace Switcher’ panel applet, its default Xorg driver, as controlled from the more WinXP style, and netbook compact Menu, Preferences, Monitor Settings provides quite usable motion video, Awesome indeed !

  7. Works great on my old Latitude C400, whereas Mint 8 LXDE had some issues.

    How do you guys think it stacks up against Lubuntu and U-Lite?

  8. Will try the fix from Vincent tomorrow. He gave a good explanation about the matter. Hope other Asus Eee 1000H users will be helped with it also.

    Anyhow, Mint rocks and I will stick to it.

  9. Great that you are pushing the editions out early in the release cycle rather than just before the next “Main edition” is released.

  10. I have trouble to log in, I installed 2 times MiNT 9 LXDE RC because have the same bug, and the first time I supposed that I mistyped my username or password so I choose to make a second full fresh install, but now I am Totally sure that I type my correct username and password that I set on installation, and however the login screen of Mint LXDE after type correct username and password, goes for a second like if was loading and then appears again the login screen asking for the username and dont aloow me to load into system. The installation process was smooth on both times, and also the boot process until the login screen is totally normalbut then I not allowed to log into system full boot.

    My machine is an old Toshiba P35-P4-3.2GhzHT and the partition is a XFS that previously I used it for testing LUBUNTU 10.04 that was installed and run perfect without any issue, but of course after have an own MiNT 9 LXDE I hurry to try and test it.

    Any idea what could be this bug?

    Thanks for the attention and best regards!

  11. Login trouble SOLVED!!!

    I found what was the trouble I formatted the parttion using my regular work Mint 8 disk utility since MiNT 9 LXDE dont contains the xfsprogs package for format during installation, so I installed xfsprogs before start installation and made it as normal.

    Now I am typing from MiNT 9 LXDE in xfs partition working fully normal and really FAAASTTT! Seems that is needed that the format be part of the process of instalation in order to avoid troubles with access the home dir after install.

    By other way, i would like to share an script that I made to control cpu governor (the P4-HT simply could really fry the machine and turn off by the ondemand governor, so my first and primary need is a way to switch governor to conservative or powersave by the kind of use that I may want to use my old toshiba), so I found some scripts of other places and simply refit it for change governors, after installation I install cpufrequtils, and use this script to change the governor and works very well (since the LXDE not include a governor applet for the panel like the xfce but also by cpufrequtils this feature dont need huge packages for such simple setting and could made the selection by a graphic menu.)

    I would like to ask if may be posible a way to add a shortcut on desktop or panel of LXDE for run this little script without need to open lxterminal and type every time.

    Script cpugov:

    —————————————————-
    #!/bin/bash
    # Governors available for a example a Pentium 4-HT
    FREQ_A=”powersave”;
    FREQ_B=”conservative”;
    FREQ_C=”ondemand”;
    FREQ_D=”performance”;
    FREQ_E=”userspace”;

    # Set value for deafult in menu selector
    VALUE0=”FALSE”;
    VALUE1=”TRUE”;
    VALUE2=”FALSE”;
    VALUE3=”FALSE”;
    VALUE4=”FALSE”;

    # Check the current Governor setting before use selector
    CURRENT=`cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor`

    # shows the options with zenity
    ANS=$(zenity –title=”CPU Governor Selector” –list –text “Current Governor: ${CURRENT}” –radiolist –column “” –column “Select new CPU Governor” “${VALUE0}” “${FREQ_A}” “${VALUE1}” “${FREQ_B}” “${VALUE2}” “${FREQ_C}” “${VALUE3}” “${FREQ_D}” “${VALUE4}” “${FREQ_E}”);

    # Check the option selected
    if [ “${ANS}” == “” ] ; then
    exit;
    fi

    if [ “${ANS}” == “${FREQ_A}” ] ; then
    GOV=”${FREQ_A}”;

    elif [ “${ANS}” == “${FREQ_B}” ] ; then
    GOV=”${FREQ_B}”;

    elif [ “${ANS}” == “${FREQ_C}” ] ; then
    GOV=”${FREQ_C}”;

    elif [ “${ANS}” == “${FREQ_D}” ] ; then
    GOV=”${FREQ_D}”;

    elif [ “${ANS}” == “${FREQ_E}” ] ; then

    gksudo “cpufreq-set -c 0 -g ${GOV}”;
    gksudo “cpufreq-set -c 1 -g ${GOV}”;

    Hope may be usefull for someone else.

    Thanks for this great release and good work!

    Best regards to all!

  12. The live session of this worked fine. However, post install I was unable to enter the desktop and was dropped to a BusyBox terminal. My hardware is:
    # CPU – Intel® Core™ i3-330M processor (2.13GHz, 3MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
    # Display Panel – 14.1” Diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
    # Standard Memory – 4096MB 1066MHz DDR3 (2 Dimm)
    # Hard Drive – 500GB 5400RPM
    # Optical Drive – LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD±R⁄RW with Double Layer Support
    # Networking⁄Wireless – 802.11b⁄g⁄n WLAN, Integrated 10⁄100 LAN
    # Graphics – ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4350 Graphics M93-S3 LP with 512MB dedicated
    Also, I’m successfully running both Ubuntu 10.04 and LM 9 (Gnome).

  13. Waitin` for Isadora Fluxbox edition. Me love it. Me bow ma head in front of Mint-team!
    Жду-не-дождусь Изадору на флюксе. Молодцы!
    Ļoti gaidu Isadoru Fluxbox. Tā būs manta. Zinu!

  14. Can you make option to switch to classic GNOME? I like mint menu, but classic GNOME for me is more Linux-like. Please make that option.

  15. Is LXDE also good for saving battery life on high-end laptops? If it is I think I’m going to try it 🙂

  16. NCIE work ghuyz ma gonna stick to dxis i was usin lubuntu till now ….nowo i guess u GUYZ!!love tha speed…

  17. Glad!!

    Are you planning to launch a DVD version – as the GNOME one – including Java, VLC, ttf-dejaVu fonts, and so on?

    Thank you,

    Maurício Camara.

  18. Will this update to LXDE final version through update manager? I’m trying to help a friend out with an old Pentium 4 1.5 GHz desktop. Regular Mint was unusable because of only 256 MB RAM. Then I tried ZenWalk 6.4 which was pretty darn snappy but no sound, no hardware acceleration and worst of all, no ethernet…

    So hoping this comes right on time, if I don’t fix his comp by tonight he’ll install a cracked Windows XP on it…

  19. Quick overview about sharing:

    Mint 9 LXDE has the following network settings/browsing tools:
    1. Preferences -> Shared Folders
    2. Accessories -> File Manager (PCManFM2)
    3. System Tools -> pyNeighborhood / Internet -> pyNeighborhood

    1. Adding a share is possible only by NFS by default. Samba should also be available, because the “General Properties” tab in Shared Folders is all about Windows sharing. Finally, Shared Folders in LXDE is different than Shared Folders in Gnome. That’s a bit inconsistent I guess.

    2. PCManFM2 has some shortcomings – I don’t know if it’s from LXDE or the Mint compilation.
    2.a. The left sidebar doesn’t include “Network Drives”
    2.b. Going to “Go -> Network Drives” will display the computers on the network and the “Windows Network” icon, but none of them actually work on double-click. Right-clicking on these icons and choosing “Open” will only trigger the “Choose An Aplication” window.

    3. pyNeighborhood is present in two different places in the menu. Normally, it shouldn’t. pyNeighborhood also fails to scan the network – probably because Samba is not installed.

    Conclusions:
    If PCManFM2 allows network browsing and it will be polished by default, there will be no need for redundancy, so pyNeighborhood can simply go away. However, none of them work right now so redundancy doesn’t make sense.

  20. @2noob2banoob: Mint LXDE needs less memory than the Gnome, KDE and XFCE editions so yes, this edition is good for saving battery life – on any laptop.

    @Mauricio Camara: This LXDE release already has Java, VLC and the DejaVu TTF fonts. It just doesn’t include OpenOffice.org because this is a light edition, so AbiWord and Gnumeric take their place. You can install OpenOffice.org if you are interested. All you have to do is start “Software Manager” if you want it and you know your PC can handle it.

  21. I really like this version for my net book. However, the login screen does not display any login names which is great for security but not necessarily what I’m looking for. Is there a way to enable a login menu with the available accounts?

  22. I have not noticed any improvement on battery life for my ACER AOD-250. Maybe I was not fully charged but I’m still thumbs up for this edition.

  23. Will there ever be an enlightenment edition? Or maybe a Netbook Remix like ubuntu provides? I might buy a system76 computer an install Mint on it since Mint is the BEST! I use the GNOME Version because of looks, yet this looks the same from the snapshot! Great job keep working I will try to donate!

  24. Why has the bootsplash issue NOT BEEN FIXED _prior_ to release of LXDE?! This is so ridiculous when seeing that repeating and maintaining the already known issues…. Instead of releasing LXDE, XFCE, KDE versions or what ever you plan to do… fix the most obvious issues first!!!

  25. Grok, you need to relax a bit. This is a release candidate and I’m sure if the developers can fix something, they will do it. However, there are much more important things to be done.

    Sharing, as you can see above, is a feature that people will have to use. I prefer to fix my boot splash manually rather than looking for solutions on how to make file sharing nice and peachy. Functionality is always more important. Jet’s just give them some space. They are quite busy these days.

  26. I’m using LM 8 KDE. When I click on any application to launch, the application icon flashes below mouse pointer. For the icons which have rectangular shape looks perfect, but for other icons which are not of rectangular shape like chrome or other a dark background surrounds the icon in the rectangular form which looks little odd. And when I insert my flash drive I dont get any option to format it when I right click on it. I have to use gparted just to format my flash drive. Its not a bug I guess. I dont know where to report it. Please give a look on them before the release of LM 9 KDE.
    Thank you

  27. Using Mint 9 on my desktop computer and Mint 8 LXDE on my old laptop.
    I just Love LXDE, very light on resources and yet giving a good look and feel. Pcmanfm is lightning fast.
    Installed Mint 8 LXDE in my mother’s computer (the computer is 10 years old, my mother is over 80). It’s the perfect distro for installing Linux on old computers replacing windows XP. Even the look and feel are similar.
    I hope there will be an easy way to upgrade from Mint 8 Lxde to Mint 9 Lxde. Just tried the RC, excellent as usual, found no issue at all. Looking forward to the final release.

  28. Just installed the Google Chrome browser. I am having a few problems. I can’t set it as the default browser. After downloading a file I also can’t open the file or chose to view it in the folder. All of this does work in the Gnome version of Linux Mint 9. Any ideas on how to fix this?

  29. Hi there everyone, I have only one problem with linux mint, only one, its works perfectly, but this problem is terrible.

    The pc-fan doesnt shut down and get quiet after booting this system!

    Its too loud and not healthy for my hardware xD

    I couldnt find drivers or anything, can someone help me plz?

    When i boot windows it gets quiet!

    regards

  30. Why can’t I see any of my other drives? Is there a way to mount my other drives so I can access them?

  31. Great work!

    I highly appreciate the work of Mint team.
    I have been using Linux Mint from its 6 version.
    And I was always looking forward for a Linux Mint which will be able to run on lighter system resources.

    I am waiting for the final version Linux Mint 9 LXDE with no patience.

    Keep it up and good luck.
    GOD bless all.

  32. @soclose: That might be the graphics card fan. If it doesn’t have the driver installed, it’s normal for your computer to make noise. Start the “Hardware drivers” application to check for available drivers. If it finds one, activate it.

  33. I had the same problem as another here….LXDE RC ran my laptop fan constantly…had to shut it down and take it off….REALLY hope this get’s fixed !

  34. I have trouble to log in too,so i should do as xaser says that installing xfsprogs before start installation .
    i am a freshman who can tell me the detailed steps to install the xfsprogs. thank you very much !

  35. Very nice.

    I loved MintMenu in the GNOME version, is MintMenu for LXDE possible? That would be awesome.

  36. “Then I tried ZenWalk 6.4 which was pretty darn snappy but no sound, no hardware acceleration and worst of all, no ethernet”

    Didi you ask on the Zenwalk support forum ??

    Zenwalk has sound and network support 🙂

    LOL

  37. Way too slow. Installed it alongside LM 8 Xfce on my laptop and immediately switched back over to 8 after trying 9. Couldn’t believe how sluggish EVERYTHING was in 9. I’m running LM 9 32-bit on my desktop, but Xfce definitely needs some work before it’s usable on less capable machines.

  38. What about 64bit Mint? 32bit is jsut so lagacy and I really need to use all my available memory 12GB.

  39. I had a quick question. First of all, I have used Lubuntu, but I am really looking forward to switching over to Mint LXDE. I have used Mint since version 6 and I feel Mint is the best Linux distro around. As far as Lubuntu, everything has worked great except that Wine does not execute .exe files. Wine installs fine (both the stable and dev versions) and I am able to adjust Wine’s settings, but once I click on an installable .exe, nothing happens. I have looked around but have not found if this is a specific issue with LXDE or 10.04 in general. I have not tested the Mint LXDE RC to check if this problem has been addressed. Anyone have any ideas?

  40. Fastest Mint ever. I have not found a better netbook distro than this. I just replaced Ubuntu 10.04 UNE with Linux Mint 9 LXDE and am never looking back.

  41. Hello everyone! After 1000 years of Windows I finally discovered Linux! What can I say … AWESOME REAL S**T 4 FREE!! I saw LMint on a friend’s computer and I’ve decided to install on my notebook! Unfortunatelly my notebook doesn’t have andy CD ROM or the posibillity to boot from USB!!!

    1mil $ question: Any posibillity to install Linux Mint over PXE or network?? That would be GREAT! 🙂

    Please help a freh Linux beliver! 🙂 THX in adv!

    /quote

    The same thing happens in my Mint 8 LXDE. Is it possible to fix this one?

  43. Ah! how can it keep getting better? (But it does.)

    Would like to see the ability to copy text from the GUI when using w3m & all terminal apps. This is a biggie for me–perhaps others, too?

    Tiny thing: Still too much windows in mint (paraphrasing Husse). Didn’t like the new icon for mintUpdate (badge). Suppose I can change it on my system once fully installed.

    Thanks Mint Team!

  44. I have been running Linux versions for quite a few years since rh7.2,and I must commend the developers on this version of Mint.
    90% of my work is in the windows environment, but hey Mint is freedom from choice!!

  45. I have an eee901 and used Ubuntu successfully (slowly). Now using this very fast Mint LXDE, my system runs great …congrats to all

  46. Hi! I would love to have the lxde proper for mint 9 , hence not downloaded rc version. any ideas when it would be out.
    have tried peppermint and lubuntu both are very nice but being a newbie want mint which is easier on newbies.
    thanx

  47. Using it now on my old spare laptop and I already love it!
    This is a bit more polished, complete and stable than Lubuntu.

  48. Further to al (#63), Mint does not appear to see my hard drive. I have a Toshiba NB205-N210 with Gentoo and Windows 7 installed, and a 2GB flash drive inserted in the slot.

    When I try to install Mint 9 LXDE RC, only the flash drive is seen, and the installer tells me no other OS is installed.
